Purpose: This study was designed to identify underlying cardiovascular risk factors among college students including lifestyle characteristics, health behaviors and knowledge, and perception of the risk factors. Method: College students ( N = 293), aged 19–36 years, enrolled at either a Midwestern or a Southwestern University in the United States, responded to three questionnaires: sociodemographic, knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors, and perception of cardiovascular risk factors. Anthropometric measures collected included blood pressure (BP), glucose, lipid panel, height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Results: There were significant regional and gender differences in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among Southwestern and Midwestern college students. Students from the Southwest had a higher risk of developing CVD in 30 years compared to those in the Midwest; they also had a higher perceived risk. Males were more at risk of developing CVD than females but had a lower perceived risk than females. Dietary habits were similar between the two populations, and we found no significant differences in BMI. The two regions varied in BP levels, but the Midwestern students had significantly higher prevalence of elevated BP and Stage 2 hypertension. Conclusion: Our data suggest that college students are a high-risk population and tend to underestimate and misperceive their risk for developing CVD.

Emil Walter Haury (1904–1992) played a key role in the definition of southwestern archaeology. Raised in a Mennonite academic community in Kansas and educated at Bethel College, the University of Arizona, and Harvard University, Haury participated in the development of dendrochronology and gained extensive archaeological field experience with Byron Cummings and Harold Gladwin. Inspired by A. V. Kidder, he contributed greatly to our knowledge of Clovis, Archaic, Mogollon, and Hohokam. His definition of southwestern archaeology continues to be the foundation for the study of prehistory in the Southwest.

As the number of international and domestic college students has increased, the importance of developing healthy lifestyles has been getting significant attention from college administrators. The current study was designed to determine if differences occur in exercise motivation between international and domestic college students. A total of 155 college students from a southwestern U.S. university completed the Exercise Motivations Inventory–2 through the university’s online active research system. Analyses indicated that international students possessed a higher motivation to exercise for revitalization, while domestic students were more motivated for a challenge, competition, and social recognition. The findings suggest that campus health professionals or wellness administrators may need to utilize different strategies to promote the health of international college students through exercise programs.

The study investigated the effect of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) on the welfare of retirees of tertiary institutions of education in the Southwestern zone of Nigeria. Using the Taro Yamane formula and a multi-level sampling technique, a sample size of 125 retirees was obtained from three tertiary institutions of education in the Southwestern part of Nigeria as follows: Osun State College of Education, Ilesa (41), Lagos State University of Education, Lagos (36) and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo (48). The main instrument of data collection was a set of questionnaire which was administered to the retirees to collect relevant data. The instrument was validated and its reliability coefficient calculated to be 0.82 using the Cronbach Alpha formula. The data collected was analysed using the Chi-square and the one-sample t-test statistics. The results showed that the contributory pension scheme did not have significant effect on the welfare of the retirees (t = .207, p < 0.05). Useful recommendations were made based on this finding.

Context Community colleges in the United States are increasingly tasked with demonstrating their commitment to improved institutional outcomes even as measures of student success are critiqued for failing to capture the colleges’ diverse missions and student populations. Purpose This paper offers an alternative framework for understanding and evaluating community college student success based on the normative and interdisciplinary capabilities approach. Setting The larger study on which this paper is based took place at a large, diverse community college located in the southwestern United States. Participants The sample for this study consists of 958 e-survey respondents (N = 17,080; response rate 6%), and semi-structured follow-up interviews with a heterogeneous group of 40 community college students. Research Design The study uses mixed methods consisting of a large-scale e-survey, student interviews, participant- and researcher-generated visual methods, and in-depth reviews of the community college and capabilities approach literatures. Results The author used a top-down/bottom-up process to generate a final empirical list of 12 community college capabilities that are informed by both the literature and student voices: practical reason, knowledge and imagination, learning disposition, social relations and networks, respect and recognition, emotional health, bodily health, economic opportunities, love and care, language competency and confidence, autonomy, and refuge. This paper also transparently documents the methodological process the author uses to generate these capabilities to aid both researchers and practitioners in their efforts to help students flourish and thrive as they navigate the higher education landscape. Conclusions The results of this study provide educational researchers and practitioners with a methodological process for developing their own locally sourced understandings of student success. As proposed in this paper, reframing the educational experience around capabilities and capabilities development provides colleges—and education institutions more generally— with a new, more responsive and democratic set of tools to use in understanding all the ways in which community colleges help students build and sustain meaningful lives.

Background: Satisfactory experience about basic life support (BLS) is crucial to ensure rapid and efficient delivery of essential life-saving care during emergency situations. Objectives: To assess BLS experience among health profession students at King Khalid University (KKU), Southwestern Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative sample of male and female health profession students, during the academic year 2019–2020. A self-reported questionnaire was utilized to collect data about BLS experiences, which included receiving BLS training, reasons for not having BLS training, suggestions to improve BLS training, encountering a situation that required the use of BLS, practicing BLS when needed and reasons for not practicing BLS when needed. Results: Out of 1261 health profession students, 590 received formal BLS training with a prevalence rate of 46.8% (95% CI: 44.0–49.6), and 46.0% of them trained at the university. Important obstacles for non-attendance included busy academic schedule (54.7%) and high cost of the training course (18%). Overall, 84.1% supported integration of BLS training into their college curricula. Almost 26% encountered a situation that required BLS; however, only 32.4% responded. Through multivariate regression, the significant determinant of response was having formal BLS training (aOR = 4.24, 95% CI: 2.38–7.54). The frequent reasons for non-response were lack of adequate BLS knowledge (35.0%), nervousness (22.8%), and that the victim was of opposite sex (9.0%). Conclusion: It is recommended that more emphasis should be given to BLS training among undergraduates of health profession colleges in Southwestern Saudi Arabia. It is recommended that BLS training be integrated into health profession college curricula. Including BLS training as a graduation requirement for health profession students might motivate students to attain BLS training courses.

Background and Purpose: College freshmen gain weight at double the rate of same-age peers, and personal, interpersonal, and situational factors play a role in this phenomenon. The objectives of the study were to quantify weight change in first semester college students and to identify predictors of weight gain. Methods: In fall 2011, 76 unmarried freshmen, living in dormitories at a public, southwestern U.S. university, participated in the study. Heights and weights were measured at the beginning and end of the semester, and an on-line survey was administered at both times. Results: In the first semester of college, 43% gained clinically significant weight (> 3.5 pounds) and 15% gained more than 10 pounds. The group at highest risk was students with a normal BMI; 50% of this cohort gained clinically significant weight. Two variables predicted 12% of weight gain: a low level of health responsibility and a normal BMI. Conclusion: For college freshmen at highest risk of precipitous weight gain, health promotion strategies aimed at maximizing health responsibility is needed. Additionally, an integration of mediating influences related to the developmental stage of emerging adulthood, such as perceived social norms, positive peer influence and self-efficacy may result in improved long-term lifestyle practices.

College of the Ozarks is a private, liberal arts college in southwestern Missouri, and the Agriculture Dept. has recently begun instituting a variety of horticulture courses in an effort to meet the increasing student interest in horticultural science. The objective is to educate and train students in the horticulture fundamentals and specific production areas (advanced courses). Also, the College is in the process of constructing teaching and demonstration gardens to be used in conjunction with classroom instruction. These gardens will include a plant materials collection and horticultural crop production areas. Additionally, as the College requires that students work part-time at any of several work “stations” on campus, students have the opportunity to gain experience in landscaping or in production greenhouses on campus. Currently, the college has 10,000 ft2 of greenhouse space that is operated for the purposes of producing plants for campus landscaping, maintaining a ≥6000 orchid collection, and producing plants for seasonal sales. The college intends to integrate the classroom instruction, experiences in the teaching gardens, and the required work experiences to provide students with a complete horticultural education. Comments and suggestions for this budding endeavor are highly sought after.

College students majoring in sports form the talent base for sports science. Their scientific research and innovation (SRI) ability directly bears on the level of sports science in future. In this paper, a questionnaire survey on the status quo of SRI ability cultivation for sports majors is carried out among postgraduate students and some teachers of sports department in five colleges of southwestern China’s Sichuan Province. The survey paints a grim picture on the SRI ability of sports majors: the students are relatively weak in SRI ability; the teachers have an average SRI ability, and pay insufficient efforts in instructing or cultivating the students’ SRI ability; the schools fail to pay enough attention to SRI ability cultivation of sports majors, not to mention creating favorable SRI conditions or environment for them. To solve these problems, the cultivation strategies for SRI ability of sports majors were designed in six aspects, namely, interest development, faculty building, and infrastructure construction. The research results provide new theoretical evidence to SRI ability cultivation of sports majors, and an important reference for promoting their SRI ability.

ABSTRACT Objectives: We sought to determine the emergency medicine training demographics of physicians working in rural and regional emergency departments (EDs) in southwestern Ontario. Methods: A confidential 8-item survey was mailed to ED chiefs in 32 community EDs in southwestern Ontario during the month of March 2005. This study was limited to nonacademic centres. Results: Responses were received from 25 (78.1%) of the surveyed EDs, and demographic information on 256 physicians working in those EDs was obtained. Of this total, 181 (70.1%) physicians had no formal emergency medicine (EM) training. Most were members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFPs). The minimum qualification to work in the surveyed EDs was a CCFP in 8 EDs (32.0%) and a CCFP with Advanced Cardiac and Trauma Resuscitation Courses (ACLS and ATLS) in 17 EDs (68.0%). None of the surveyed EDs required a CCFP(EM) or FRCP(EM) certification, even in population centres larger than 50 000. Conclusion: The majority of physicians working in southwestern Ontario community EDs graduated from family medicine residencies, and most have no formal EM training or certification. This information is of relevance to both family medicine and emergency medicine residency training programs. It should be considered in the determination of curriculum content and the appropriate number of residency positions.

Measures: The study measured age of JUUL initiation, JUUL dependence, and use of other e-cigarettes and other tobacco products. Participants described reasons for JUUL use as brief open-ended responses. Analysis: Responses were categorized by 2 researchers using an inductive procedure. Logistic regressions examined associations between demographics and use frequency and categorized reasons for using JUUL. Results: Four reasons for using JUUL emerged: self-help (48.4%), social (30.4%), experience (42.8%), and substance use/addiction (42.3%). Daily JUUL users were 1.66 (95% CI: 1.05-2.63) times as likely to use JUUL for self-help than those who used JUUL 1-3 days/week. Those who had never tried a cigarette were twice (OR = 2.08; 95% CI: 1.22-3.54) as likely as cigarette-first users to use JUUL for social reasons. Males (OR = 1.87; 95% CI: 1.32-2.65) had higher odds of using JUUL for the experience than females, and JUUL and other e-cigarettes users were 4.37 (95% CI: 1.83-10.45) times as likely as JUUL-only users to use JUUL due to substance use/addiction. Conclusion: JUUL users report unique reasons for use (e.g., addiction) not previously reported for older models of e-cigarette devices.

Food insecurity (FI) typically produces unfavorable health conditions. Research shows the high prevalence of FI among college students, and depression is one of the adverse effects of FIamong them. It is possible that FI may increase the risk of pain via depression; however, it is currently unclear whether FI is linked to pain among college students. Therefore, this study compared pain experiences between students with and without FI, and examined the relationship between FI, depression, and pain. One hundred seventy-six college students at a Hispanic-serving institution in the southwestern region of US completed self-report measures to assess FI, depression, pain severity, and pain interference. Results indicated that approximately 24% of the students were categorized as food insecure, and those students scored higher on pain interference compared to food-secure students. FI was positively associated with depression and pain interference scores, and depression scores were positively associated with pain interference scores. The mediation analyses based on the counterfactual framework demonstrated a significant mediation effect of depression, where 50.59% of the total effect of FI on pain interference was attributable to the depression. These results suggest that FI extends its negative effects into pain interference among college students, but better management of depression may help alleviate the effects of FI on pain interference.

Two subscales were developed, one for each category of motivations. Reliability for each subscale as estimated by coefficient alpha was .80 and .86, respectively. A series of step-wise multiple regression analyses were computed in which individual drug use indices served as criterion variables, while the predictor variables were the personal motivations subscale (PMS) and the social motivation subscale (SMS) for each model. The results indicated that the PMS was the stronger predictor in every model with the exception of the model that predicted the alcohol use index. The SMS was the best predictor for alcohol use.

The Personal Background Preparation Survey (PBPS) identifies students at risk for academic nonadvancement. Uniquely, the PBPS produces individualized reports making evidence-based risk-specific recommendations prescribing interventions targeting students’ empirically identified risk indicators. At a large southwestern health sciences community college, after baseline PBPS administration among 409 diverse first-semester-fall 2010 students, fall 2011 PBPS administration helped target PBPS-individualized interventions among 618 first-semester-fall 2011 students. Group-oriented Advanced Academic Training (AAT) workshops augmented PBPS-targeted individualized interventions among 1,183 additional first-semester students during fall 2012 and fall 2013. AAT participants practiced a daily self-testing retrieval regimen to reduce PBPS-identified cognitive processing, information-, and time-management risk indicators. Controlling PBPS risk level, underrepresented minority status, and gender as covariates, first-semester student nonadvancement rate decreased from baseline’s 42.3% and PBPS-individualized interventions’ 41.4% to 16.2% and 11.6% postAAT ( p < .001), respectively. AAT was designed to reduce primarily higher risk student nonadvancement; yet, retention gains did not differ significantly across risk levels, underrepresented minority students status, and gender.

Previous research has found mixed results regarding the association between acculturation and substance use in Hispanic populations. Additional research is warranted to examine relations among facets of acculturation, particularly acculturative stress, and marijuana use. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-esteem mediates the relation between acculturative stress and a lifetime history of marijuana use among a sample of Hispanic college students. Hispanic college students ( N = 204; Mean age = 20.3 years) from a large southwestern university participated in an online study and reported on lifetime marijuana use, self-esteem, and acculturative stress. We evaluated the hypothesis that self-esteem would mediate the relation between acculturative stress and the likelihood of reporting a history of marijuana use, utilizing Hayes’ SPSS macro, which provides estimates of boot-strapped confidence intervals for the indirect effect. Results showed that self-esteem did not significantly mediate the relation between acculturative stress and likelihood of marijuana use [ b = .157, 95% CI (−.003, .017)]. Future studies might examine other facets of acculturation in relation to substance use, utilizing a longitudinal approach to better understand these associations.

Abstract Objective To assess the patterns and intensities of physical activity among pregnant women in southwestern China, which help us create a fitness regimen based on the 2002 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) guidelines for exercise during pregnancy. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed to recruit pregnant women at a prenatal checking visit clinic with the self-administered Chinese version of Pregnancy Physical Activity Questionnaire (PPAQ). Results A total of 1179 Chinese pregnant women were enrolled, of whom 92.60% were classified as not meeting the ACOG guidelines. By intensity, 47.36% of the score was attributed to light-intensity activities (1.5 to <3.0 metabolic equivalent [MET]) in the first trimester; the other 2 trimesters were similar. By patterns, about 45.15% of the score was attributed to inactivity. More than 82.35% of enrolled pregnant women regarded slowly walking as the most common type of exercise during pregnancy. Conclusions This study represents a group of Chinese women who maintained an inactive lifestyle, including low-intensity activities and unitary type of exercises during their pregnancy. Health-care providers are advised to provide appropriate physical activity guidelines to pregnant women. Development of MET-hours/week recommendations is warranted to promote greater physical activity during pregnancy.

Nonmedical prescription drug use (NMPDU) is a serious issue on college campuses. We examine the factors affecting instrumental and recreational NMPDU within the same sample, and test the efficacy of learning and strain theories in predicting NMPDU for both instrumental and recreational use. This cross-sectional study utilizes survey data gathered from a convenient but representative sample ( n = 2,466) of students attending a large public university in the Southwestern United States. There is support for learning theory, but not for strain theory, in predicting both recreational and instrumental use. Logistic regression analyses also show that while marijuana smokers, illicit street drug users, and those possessing less of an academic ethic are more likely to partake in NMPDU for both recreational and instrumental purposes, the predictors for recreational and instrumental NMPDU differ in interesting ways with regard to race, gender, binge drinking, living arrangement, and Greek organization membership.

ABSTRACT The prevalence of mental health problems among student learners has increased in recent decades. University and college expectations, plus the requirement for effective time management (among other things), may significantly augment this problem. School assessment practices and learning demands may give rise to anxiety and depression within the student body, ultimately affecting both their psychological and academic outcomes. We considered the agencies that students typically approached in various daily situations (e.g., where do students turn with issues related to time management or personal adjustment and anxiety – Google, parents, best friends, professors, on-campus counseling centers). A sample of 103 students from the University of Windsor in Southwestern Ontario Canada indicated which of 15 agencies they would consult, should they encounter each of 50 scenarios related to broader categories (14 in total) such as death, school, time constraints, relationship, sexual harassment, etc. The non-use of Google and the under-utilization of the peer support and student counseling centers are discussed, as are the implications for university and college administrations' consideration of student mental health issues.

Background There is ongoing debate about whether friends’ greater similarity in Body Mass Index (BMI) than non-friends is due to friend selection, shared environments, or peer influence. Methods First-year college students (n = 104) from a southwestern U.S. university were randomly assigned roommates during the university’s housing process, effectively removing friend selection effects. Participant BMI was measured up to four times (T1-T4) across 2015–2016. The influence of roommate baseline BMI (T1) on change in participant BMI over time (T2-T4) was analyzed using a linear mixed effects model adjusted for individual socio-demographics, linear time trends, baseline BMI, and physical clustering of students. A sensitivity analysis examining floormates was also conducted. Results Consistent with roommate influence, participants randomized to roommates with a higher BMI gained more weight between times T2 and T4 (β = 0.06; 95% CI = 0.02, 0.10). No shared environment effects (shared campus or floor) were found. Conclusions Randomly assigned roommates influenced each other's weight trajectories. This clarifies that BMI convergence can occur outside of friend selection or shared environments mechanisms.

Aim: To describe the effectiveness of an evidence-based practice (EBP) project on a college campus using an educational campaign that leveraged technology as well as traditional marketing strategies for the dissemination of valuable, reliable health information about the seasonal influenza virus and seasonal influenza vaccination. Background: Despite the typical seasonal influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) of approximately 50% - 60% (Centers for Disease Contol and Prevention, 2016c), some groups of individuals, such as young adults, do not take advantage of obtaining the immunization for a variety of reasons. Methods: Students (N=55) at a small private university in southwestern Pennsylvania agreed to participate in an EBP project between September 2015 and October 2015. Project participants were sent a link to an animated online video about seasonal influenza, and an optional text message reminder was sent to encourage vaccination against the virus. An electronic survey was utilized to identify demographics and confirm the effectiveness of the campaign methods. Results: Due to the limited number of survey responses, a broad scale conclusion of intervention effectiveness cannot be applied against the larger college student population nationally. However, the results from the participants who viewed the online educational video showed a favorable reaction to this type of intervention. Conclusions: Based on the EBP project results, when developing health-related material and programming, consideration needs to be given to the college student population’s preferences on learning. Given the computer usage statistics of the college-age population and the results of this project, the matching of the video to the population’s preferred medium is supported.

With the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) globally, including in Nigeria, self-care practices are universally recognized as imperative to keeping the illness under control and preventing complications. It is important to determine how competent patients feel about managing their diabetes; as well as their psychosocial adjustment. Self-efficacy measures these important aspects of diabetes care and act as a guide to health professionals on how best to tailor diabetes education and support. There is a dearth of studies on self-efficacy and associated influences, among people living with diabetes in Nigeria. Hence, this study was carried out to fill the lacunae. This descriptive study was carried out at the Out-patient Clinic of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, among 235 people receiving treatment for diabetes. A total sampling of all available patients who provided consent at the time of data collection was done. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire consisting of a section on sociodemographic and clinical characteristics including fasting blood glucose; followed by a section on diabetes self-efficacy. Diabetes self-efficacy was measured using the validated and adapted Michigan Diabetes Empowerment scale (DES). Ethical approval was obtained from the University of Ibadan/University College Hospital Institutional Review Board (UI/UCH IRB). Data were entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences, version 20. Data were analysed using frequencies, percentages, mean, independent t-test and Pearson’s correlation at α 0.05. Participants were predominantly women (60.9%) and had a mean age of 59.3 ± 14.0 years. More than half of the participants (55%) had a high self-efficacy level. Educational level and having a family member who is a nurse or a doctor were significantly associated with high self-efficacy. Fasting blood glucose level was negatively correlated with self-efficacy and the domain of managing the psychological aspect of diabetes. A good percentage of people living with diabetes had high self-efficacy, which was influenced by educational level and having a health professional as a relative. Those with high self-efficacy had better glucose control. It is recommended that individually-tailored diabetes education be provided for people with poorly controlled glucose level.

Using the theory of student involvement, the purpose of this study was to compare sport club participation and health-related outcomes, as well as the association between these two variables by sex and academic classification among college students. Participants were 127 sport club members recruited from a university in the southwestern United States. MANOVA analyses indicated that males reported more recreation center visits, greater sport club satisfaction, and lower subjective vitality than females; freshmen reported more recreation center visits and higher grade point averages (GPAs) than nonfreshmen. Canonical correlation analyses revealed that sport club satisfaction was positively related to GPA and subjective vitality, and sport club memberships were positively related to body mass index in the overall sample. Group differences were found in the direction and magnitude of these relationships. Thus, campus recreation professionals should consider sex and freshman status of sport club participants to target their diverse needs for optimal health-related outcomes.

Guided by the socio-ecological model, the aim of this study was to investigate the predictive strengths of individual, social, and physical environmental factors toward different intensities of physical activity (PA; vigorous PA, moderate PA, walking) and sedentary behavior (SB) among college students. A cross-sectional research design was used. There were 287 college students (Mage = 20.75 ± 2.91; 54% female) recruited from a public research university in the Southwestern United States. Participants completed previously validated questionnaires assessing their PA, SB, and perceptions of self-efficacy, social support, and physical environment variables. Correlation and hierarchical regression analyses were performed to examine the associations and the relative contributions of those individual, social, and physical environmental factors to PA and SB, respectively. The findings indicated that self-efficacy, social support from friends, and convenience of using exercise facilities were positively correlated with vigorous PA. Self-efficacy and physical environmental factor such as convenience of using exercise facilities were significantly associated with students’ moderate PA. Physical environmental factors, including convenience of using exercise facilities, satisfaction with neighborhood services, ease of walking to public transportation stop, and detached single-family residence were significantly related to walking, while only detached single-family residence was associated to SB. The results highlight PA interventions may do well to focus on the promotion of individual and environmental variables to increase PA in college students. More evidence is needed to determine the relationships between social ecological factors and SB.

IntroductionCollege students’ mental health problems and suicidal behaviour are serious, persistent and prevalent public health issues. With the need for mental health support greatly exceeding the availability of on-campus treatment, a recent trend on college campuses is to offer courses designed to teach students strategies for developing mental health or resilience. While these courses are exceptionally popular among students, a paucity of research investigates the health outcomes associated with participation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the acceptability, appropriateness, feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a college course grounded in skills from dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) titled, ‘Wellness and Resilience for College and Beyond’.Methods and analysisDuring the spring and fall 2020 semesters, the course will be offered on five campuses in Southwestern Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The course consists of 15 weekly 2.5-hour lessons, weekly homework assignments and a final examination with content drawn from DBT, acceptance and commitment therapy and positive psychology. Undergraduate students aged 18–24 will self-select into the course and control subjects receiving ‘university as usual’ will be recruited to serve as a comparison group. Students who receive the course will complete measures of course acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility. Most were college educated (85.3%), with mean age of 54.0 (± 10.6), and women (66.4%). The findings indicate that gender and education played a moderating role between family support and self-efficacy for a healthy diet, whereas age and education were moderators between support from family and friends and healthy dietary practices. Diet interventions tailored to demographic subgroups may increase self-efficacy, promote healthy dietary practices, and ultimately contribute to a reduction in the rates of critical health conditions and health costs in the community.

Objective: When individuals have negative perceptions about dental care, they refuse to seek treatment which leads to worsened conditions. The interactions with patients attending the various dental clinics revealed some dissatisfaction with the quality of service delivered. The objective of this study was to assess the perception of the patients about the dentists and dental nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted for a period of three months among old and new patients attending the Oral Diagnosis, Periodontology, Orthodontic, Oral Surgery, Conservative, Prosthetic and Paedodontic Clinics at the dental centre, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. The data was collected using an English-language questionnaire and analysed using the IBM SPSS Software version 23. Results: There were 228 participants, majority were females (55.4%) and belonged to the 56 years and above age group (20%). The patients agreed (40.6%) and strongly agreed (32.1%) that the first impression they had of their dentist affected their confidence in him/her. More than half of the patients (52.7%) reported they were particular about the physical appearance of their dentist and 84.3% preferred their dentist to be professionally dressed. Greater than half of the patients (64.1%) and almost half (46.2%) claimed that their overall experience with their dentist and dental nurse was excellent respectively. Conclusion: It was observed that the patients were not particular about the demographics of the dentists or dental nurses but placed more emphasis on appearance, behaviour and skills which ultimately influenced their overall experience and perception.

Knowledge of the surface and subsurface structures are vital for construction procedures. Integrated geophysical and geotechnical methods were applied to image the subsurface for evaluation of the stratigraphy and the competency of each geoelectric layer for construction purposes at the Federal College of Education Osiele, Abeokuta South-western Nigeria. Nine Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) using Schlumberger electrode configurations were conducted over a current electrode spacing of 200 m. Multi-channel Analysis Surface Wave (MASW) was the seismic technique used for the geotechnical analysis of the study area and laboratory analysis was performed to investigate, Atterberg limit, particle size distribution, compaction test, specific gravity, and California bearing ratio. Results from the geophysical investigation revealed four to five geoelectric layers: topsoil, clayey sand, sandy clay, laterite, and fresh basement. The MASW results have s-wave velocities range of 40–500 m/s and analysis showed four layers. The laboratory analysis revealed that all the ten traverses have specific gravity, which is out of limit except sample 8 which is 2.80, plastic index and Atterberg limits of liquid were within permissible values of 12% and 35% respectively except samples 9 and 10, and California Bearing Ratio within specified limits. Geophysical and geotechnical investigation of the subsurface carried out in the study area for construction purposes revealed that the foundation of a heavy structure should be targeted at around 20 m into the subsurface.

The experiments tried to uncover some of the natural onions that are related to the problems in the theater work. In 2016 and 2017, a total of 334 seven-year-old students from 19 primary schools participated. Students' views and answers to questions addressed to children were included in the table by questionnaire. A retrospective linear analysis was used to establish a correlation. The data showed that children had a much better understanding of the nature and importance of protection after games and ongoing trials.

Aim/Purpose: Dropout is a critical problem in graduate college programs across disciplines and institutions. Yet relatively little research has assessed graduate students’ motivations for dropping out across disciplines, or systematically modeled perceptions that contribute to dropout intentions. Background: Perceptions drive critical decisions that people make about their lives, and a core set of these perceptions consistently predict adults’ educational intentions and choices. This study investigates how a set of critical perceptions predict the strength of graduate students’ dropout intentions. Methodology: This study models their differential contributions using structural equation modeling, in AMOS®. Participants were 886 masters and doctoral students across programs and colleges in a Southwestern university in the United States. Findings: The best-fitting model demonstrated most significant influences on graduate students’ dropout intentions were predicted by: satisfaction with the overall graduate experience (not just program-of-study), self-efficacy for professional success (not just coursework), and the Perceived Graduate Experience Gap (expectations vs. experience in graduate school). Model fit was excellent for the whole group, and demonstrated some nuanced differences for subgroups, notably by degree type and point-in-program. Recommendations for Practitioners: These findings illuminate considerations useful to graduate faculty and program administrators concerned about improving retention and completion. They can inform policies and practice for preventing and reducing graduate student dropout.
