Source enumeration is an important procedure for radio direction-of-arrival finding in the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. The most widely used source enumeration approaches are based on the eigenvalues themselves of the covariance matrix obtained from the received signal. However, they have shortcomings such as the imperfect accuracy even at a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the poor performance at low SNR, and the limited detection number of sources. This paper proposestwo source enumeration approaches using the ratio of eigenvalue gaps and the threshold trained by a machine learning based clustering algorithm for gaps of normalized eigenvalues, respectively. In the first approach, a criterion formula derived with eigenvalue gaps is used to determine the number of sources, where the formula has maximum value. In the second approach, datasets of normalized eigenvalue gaps are generated for the machine learning based clustering algorithm and the optimal threshold for estimation of the number of sources are derived, which minimizes source enumeration error probability. Simulation results show that our proposed approaches are superior to the conventional approaches from both the estimation accuracy and numerical detectability extent points of view. The results demonstrate that the second proposed approach has the feasibility to improve source enumeration performance if appropriate learning datasets are sufficiently provided.

In electronic warfare, source enumeration and direction-of-arrival estimation are important. The source enumeration method based on eigenvalues of covariance matrix from received is one of the most used methods. However, there are some drawbacks such as accuracy less than 100 % at high SNR, poor performance at low SNR and reduction of maximum number of estimating sources. We suggested new method based on eigenvalues gaps, which is named AREG(Accumulated Ratio of Eigenvalues Gaps). Meanwhile, FGML(Fast Gridless Maximum Likelihood) which reconstructs the covariance matrix was suggested by Wu et al., and it improves performance of the existing source enumeration methods without modification of algorithms. In this paper, first, we combine AREG with FGML to improve the performance. Second, we compare the performance of source enumeration and direction-of-arrival estimation methods in Rayleigh fading. Third, we suggest new method named REG(Ratio of Eigenvalues Gaps) to reduce performance degradation in Rayleigh Fading environment of AREG.

Source number estimation is one of the important research directions in array signal processing. To solve the difficulty of estimating the number of signal sources under a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), a source number enumeration method based on ensemble learning is proposed. This method first preprocesses the signal data. The specific process is to decompose the original signal into several intrinsic mode functions (IMF) by using Complementary Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (CEEMD), and then construct a covariance matrix and perform eigenvalue decomposition to obtain samples. Finally, the source number enumeration model based on ensemble learning is used to predict the number of sources. This model is divided into two layers. First, the primary learner is trained with the dataset, and then the prediction result on the primary learner is used as the input of the secondary learner for training, and then the prediction result is obtained. Computer theoretical signals and real measured signals are used to verify the proposed source number enumeration method, respectively. Experiments show that this method has better performance than other methods at low SNR, and it is more suitable for real environment. A spherical microphone array is used to detect and localize sound sources in terms of model-based machine learning (ML). In this application, it is crucial to establish parametric models to distinguish background sound environment from presence of sound sources. In the presence of sound sources, the parameter models are also used to localize an unknown number of potentially multiple sound sources. In this work, a model-based Bayesian learning framework is presented for localizing an unknown number of sound sources. Among them, a no-source scenario needs to be accounted for. The model-based machine learning applies the model comparison between the no-source model and the one-source model for sound source detection. After detecting sound sources, the machine learning needs to involve sound source enumeration and localization in order to correctly localize potential multiple sound sources. Specifically, sound environment is analyzed using Bayesian model comparison of two different models accounting for absence and presence of the sound sources for source detection. Upon a positive detection, potentially multiple source models are involved to analyze direction of arrivals (DoAs) for far-field and to localize sound sources for near-field including source distances, amplitudes, and DoAs using Bayesian model selection and parameter estimation.

Lattice enumeration is a linear-space algorithm for solving the shortest lattice vector problem (SVP). Extreme pruning is a practical technique for accelerating lattice enumeration, which has a mature theoretical analysis and practical implementation. However, these works have yet to be applied to discrete pruning. In this paper, we improve the discrete pruned enumeration (DP enumeration) and provide a solution to the problem proposed by Léo Ducas and Damien Stehlé regarding the cost estimation of discrete pruning. We first rectify the randomness assumption to more precisely describe the lattice point distribution of DP enumeration. Then, we propose a series of improvements, including a new polynomial-time binary search algorithm for cell enumeration radius, a refined cell-decoding algorithm and a rerandomization and reprocessing strategy, all aiming to lift the efficiency and build a more precise cost-estimation model for DP enumeration. Based on these theoretical and practical improvements, we build a precise cost-estimation model for DP enumeration by simulation, which has good accuracy in experiments. This DP simulator enables us to propose an optimization method of calculating the optimal parameters of DP enumeration to minimize the running time. The experimental results and asymptotic analysis both show that the discrete pruning method could outperform extreme pruning, which means that our optimized DP enumeration might become the most efficient polynomial-space SVP solver to date. An open-source implementation of DP enumeration with its simulator is also provided.

Data quality is a central analytical issue in most studies of historical populations. There is often a need for data correction as well as for a careful consideration of the sources and types of error in data collection. Cross-identification of enumerated or registered events in independent sources often can be used as a check on data quality. This study investigates data quality of two sources by their enumeration comparability and in addition discusses some of the problems with such a comparison. The two sources compared are household listings of the United States manuscript federal censuses and independently prepared maps detailing property owners and the location of their property. The method employed estimates the correspondence of listings in each source based on the other and the combined enumeration correspondence of both sources. Further, this paper examines some of the village-level demographic and economic factors which may be associated with differences in the relative completeness of these sources.

The article discusses the current problem of reducing power dissipation in global communication lines while maintaining high performance. With the increasing complexity of system on chip, power consumption has become a major issue in system design. The main source of dynamic power dissipation in digital circuits is buses. Bus switching activity accounts for a significant portion of the total power dissipation. One effective method for reducing switching activity during device-to-device or on-chip communication is the use of low-power encoding techniques. Encoding and decoding methods have been studied to reduce the number of switching on buses. The purpose of the article is to develop a method for constructing a set of unit distance codes, determining the types of code transformations, and criteria for assessing the effectiveness of codes. Research results. A method for constructively enumerating unit distance codes has been developed, based on an invariant approach and the construction of a system of various representatives. Estimates of their number were obtained, characteristics were determined, and catalogs of typical representatives were generated. Conclusion. Application of the developed method will allow us to analyze and select codes with the best properties and, as a result, obtain better results in terms of network delays, energy costs and other design limitations for computer systems.

With increased focus on watershed protection under the Surface Water Treatment Rule, indicators that discriminate among sources of microbial inputs (microbial source tracking) are needed to supplement the quantitative information provided by total and fecal coliform measurements for drinking water monitoring. Bifidobacteria are found in the digestive tract and feces of humans and other animals, and also in sewage. Sorbitol is a food additive used exclusively in food intended for human consumption. Therefore, the presence of sorbitol-fermenting Bifidobacteria in environmental waters can be indicative of sources of human fecal contamination. A series of media were evaluated using ATCC cultures of B. breve and B. adolescentis, feces from different animals, and domestic wastewater samples. The media evaluated were Human Bifid Sorbitol agar (HBSA), modified Human Bifid Sorbitol agar, Beerens Medium, modified Beerens Medium, Reinforced Clostridial agar, BIM-25 Medium, and modified BIM-25 Medium. Variables such as sample preservation, incubation time, different pH indicators, plating technique, and discontinuous exposure to sorbitol were also evaluated. A series of biochemical tests were used to confirm positive colonies enumerated on the various media. Membrane filtration and enumeration of sodium sulfite preserved samples on HBSA containing bromocresol purple using loose lidded plates for 48 h provided the best recoveries for presumptive positive colonies. A number of sorbitol-fermenters that were not Bifidobacteria were able to grow on all media tested, resulting in false-positives. Therefore, plating on HBSA should be followed by a confirmation step when monitoring for sorbitol-fermenting Bifidobacteria in environmental waters. A year-long sampling survey of a managed reservoir in Massachusetts provided field validation of the proposed methodology for sorbitol-fermenting Bifidobacteria as a human-related source tracking indicator tool.Key words: sorbitol-fermenting Bifidobacteria, microbial source tracking, watershed management, fecal contamination.

There are many possibilities of pig carcasses contamination by pathogenic microorganisms, particularly on the slaughter line. The aim of this paper was to affirm a hygienic level of the slaughter line by the enumeration of aerobic bacteria and enterobacteria. Samples were taken by both non-destructive and destructive methods from 4 place on the carcass of 5 pigs, weekly for 15 weeks. The results of examination has shown the hygiene of slaughter line had satisfied and acceptable level. Destructive method of samples was more susceptible than non-destructive method. The obtained results have interpreted according to regulation EC 2073/2005. .

A medium for the selective isolation and enumeration of Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare and M. scrofulaceum (MAIS) was developed, based upon the ability of these mycobacteria to utilize Tween 80 as sole carbon source and grow optimally at pH 5.5 on a simple mineral salts medium. Representative MAIS strains had higher efficiencies of plating on the Tween 80 medium compared with Middlebrook 7H10. It was shown that nonmycobacterial organisms in natural waters had lower efficiencies of plating on the Tween 80 medium and smaller colonies, thus allowing direct isolation and enumeration of the slowly growing mycobacteria without overgrowth.

Abstract Heterogeneity in capture probabilities is known to produce bias in the dual system estimates that have been used to estimate census coverage in U.S. Censuses since 1980. Triple system estimation using an administrative records list as a third source along with the census and coverage measurement survey has the potential to produce estimates with less bias. This is particularly important for hard-to-reach populations. The article presents potential statistical methods for the estimation of net census undercount using three systems for obtaining population information: (1) a decennial census; (2) an independent enumeration of the population in a sample of block clusters; and (3) administrative records. The 2010 Census Match Study will create census-like files for the entire nation using federal and commercial sources of administrative records. The 2010 Census Coverage Measurement Survey is an enumeration in a sample of block clusters that is independent of the 2010 decennial Census.

BPS-Statistics Indonesia plans to carry out its seventh population census in 2020. In contrast to the traditional method in previous censuses, it will use administrative data obtained from the Ministry of Home Affairs combined with field enumeration. Individual information recorded in the administrative data will be used as the initial data source for the field enumeration as well as to ensure adequate coverage. These changes could be a step towards a register-based census in the future. Given the important role of register data in the upcoming Indonesian census, it is necessary to assess the quality of the administrative data which have been recorded by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze whether there are significant differences on selected individual variables between the data from the administrative source and the census test results. The census test was conducted in three selected villages using multi-mode data collection. The comparison of the selected individual variables and the statistical test results indicate that this administrative data is of sufficient quality to be used as the data source for a combined method census in Indonesia.

Poultry is a source of Salmonella and Escherichia coli. Antibiotics can be used to reduce the enumeration and prevalence of these bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of sulfadimethoxine antibiotic on the enumeration and prevalence of Salmonella, Escherichia coli and aerobic plate count in broilers. Broilers (n = 600) were allotted to two treatments, each with twelve replications. The treatments were control (drinking water without antibiotic) and with antibiotic at 0.05% (wt/vol) sulfadimethoxine. After a six-week period, the enumeration of Salmonella in the experimental treatment was detected at 2.55 log CFU/g. This value is not different (P>0.05) than that detected in the control at 2.81 log CFU/g. With respect to prevalence, there was a difference (P<0.05) between the experimental treatment at 90.0% and the control at 100%. The enumeration of E. coli in the experimental treatment was detected at 3.97 log CFU/g. This value is lower (P<0.05) than that detected in the control treatment at 4.37 log CFU/g. With respect to prevalence, there was no difference (P>0.05) between the experimental treatment at 100% and the control at 100%. The enumeration of aerobic plate count in the antibiotic treatment were detected at 6.62 log CFU/g. This value is lower (P<0.05) than that detected in the control at 7.50 log CFU/g. With respect to prevalence, there was no difference (P>0.05) between treatments. Our overall findings suggest that the use of the antibiotic sulfadimethoxine can reduce the number of E. coli, Salmonella and aerobic plate count in the small-scale broiler operations.

AbstractData analytics are moving beyond the limits of a single platform. In this paper, we present the cost-based optimizer of Rheem, an open-source cross-platform system that copes with these new requirements. The optimizer allocates the subtasks of data analytic tasks to the most suitable platforms. Our main contributions are: (i) a mechanism based on graph transformations to explore alternative execution strategies; (ii) a novel graph-based approach to determine efficient data movement plans among subtasks and platforms; and (iii) an efficient plan enumeration algorithm, based on a novel enumeration algebra. We extensively evaluate our optimizer under diverse real tasks. We show that our optimizer can perform tasks more than one order of magnitude faster when using multiple platforms than when using a single platform.

Vibrios, such as Vibrio parahaemolyticus, are naturally occurring halophilic bacteria that are a major cause of foodborne illness. Because of their autochthonous nature, managing vibrio levels in marine and estuarine environments is impossible. Instead, it is crucial to reliably enumerate their abundance to minimize human exposure. One method of achieving this is the direct plating/colony hybridization (DP/CH) method, which has been used to efficiently quantify pathogenic vibrios in oysters and other seafood products. Although successful, the method relies on proprietary resources. We examined alternative approaches, assessed the influence of the reagent suppliers’ source on enumeration accuracy, and made experimental adjustments that maximized efficiency, sensitivity, and specificity. We report here that in-house conjugation via Cell Mosaic is a viable alternative to the previously available sole-source distributor of the alkaline phosphatase-conjugated probes used to enumerate vibrios in oysters. We also report that milk was a viable alternative as a blocking reagent, pH must be eight, an orbital shaker was a viable alternative to a water bath, and narrow polypropylene containers were a viable alternative to Whirl-Pak bags. These modifications will be crucial to scientists enumerating vibrios and other pathogens in food products.

Fecal pollution, commonly detected in untreated or less treated sewage, is associated with health risks (e.g., waterborne diseases and antibiotic resistance dissemination), ecological issues (e.g., release of harmful gases in fecal sludge composting, proliferative bacterial/algal growth due to high nutrient loads) and economy losses (e.g., reduced aqua farm harvesting). Therefore, the discharge of untreated domestic sewage to the environment and its agricultural reuse are growing concerns. The goals of fecal pollution detection include fecal waste source tracking and identifying the presence of pathogens, therefore assessing potential health risks. This review summarizes available biological fecal indicators focusing on host specificity, degree of association with fecal pollution, environmental persistence, and quantification methods in fecal pollution assessment. The development of practical tools is a crucial requirement for the implementation of mitigation strategies that may help confine the types of host-specific pathogens and determine the source control point, such as sourcing fecal wastes from point sources and nonpoint sources. Emerging multidisciplinary bacterial enumeration platforms are also discussed, including individual working mechanisms, applications, advantages, and limitations.

Join query evaluation with ordering is a fundamental data processing task in relational database management systems. SQL and custom graph query languages such as Cypher offer this functionality by allowing users to specify the order via the ORDER BY clause. In many scenarios, the users also want to see the first k results quickly (expressed by the LIMIT clause), but the value of k is not predetermined as user queries are arriving in an online fashion. Recent work has made considerable progress in identifying optimal algorithms for ranked enumeration of join queries that do not contain any projections. In this paper, we initiate the study of the problem of enumerating results in ranked order for queries with projections. Our main result shows that for any acyclic query, it is possible to obtain a near-linear (in the size of the database) delay algorithm after only a linear time preprocessing step for two important ranking functions: sum and lexicographic ordering. For a practical subset of acyclic queries known as star queries, we show an even stronger result that allows a user to obtain a smooth tradeoff between faster answering time guarantees using more preprocessing time. Our results are also extensible to queries containing cycles and unions. We also perform a comprehensive experimental evaluation to demonstrate that our algorithms, which are simple to implement, improve up to three orders of magnitude in the running time over state-of-the-art algorithms implemented within open-source RDBMS and specialized graph databases.

Robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) is essential in many applications to ensure signal-receiving quality when model errors exist. Eigen-subspace projection (ESP), one of the most popular RAB methods, can be used when there are arbitrary model errors. However, a major challenge of ESP is projection subspace selection. Traditional ESP (TESP) treats the signal subspace as the projection subspace; thus, source enumeration is required to obtain prior information. Another inherent defect is its poor performance at low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). To overcome these drawbacks, two improved ESP-based RAB methods are proposed in this study. Considering that a reliable signal-of-interest steering vector needs to be obtained via the subspace projection, the main idea underlying the proposed methods is to use sequenced steering vector estimation to invert the subspace dimension estimate for an arranged eigenvector matrix. As the proposed methods do not require source enumeration, they are simple to implement. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methods in terms of output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio performance. Specifically, compared with TESP, the proposed methods present at least a 2.6 dB improvement at low SNRs regardless of the error models.

Although the understanding of international migration is important for both the countries of origin and countries of destination, the tools of statistics are quite insufficient. The EU LFS (EU Labour Force Survey), which may be considered as mirror statistics and a target survey as well, is an important data source, nevertheless, methodological pitfalls may occur. Until the recent years, Hungary was hardly affected by the migration process of the EU, so its recording was less important. As a result of the 2008 crisis, however, the number of people working abroad has increased, and the growth was further intensified by lifting the restrictions in the Austrian and German labour market in the spring of 2011. For Hungary, the three main EU countries of destination are Austria, Germany and the United Kingdom. Labour movements to these countries include commuting, which can be traced by the Hungarian LFS. Migration processes have typical characteristics by the countries of destination, while the data sources available for estimating the size of migration and the relevance of their information are different also by countries. For recording the labour migration to Hungary, there are several administrative data sources, so it is not necessary to use the less reliable data of population surveys.

The Karang Taruna community is the manager as well as the tourism cultivator. With the times and also the existence of assistance from the Kediri government's youth tourism culture and sports department, the management of the Jiput source tourism continues to improve ideas to further develop it to become even more interesting and better. Because the source of Jiput is well-known as a water source destination whose existence is still very prominent among the people of Kediri. Management that is still lacking and has not been implemented properly must be repaired immediately. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Determination of informants using purposive sampling, namely representative. There are two types of data sources, namely primary data sources and secondary data. Data collection techniques are in-depth interviews, observation, documentation. The way to analyze the data is data sorting, data presentation and integrated enumeration. The results of the study show that the management of marketing, human resources and finance is currently running well, so that it influences the existence of this Jiput tourism source.

Abstract Motivation Phylogenetic tree reconciliation is the method of choice in analyzing host-symbiont systems. Despite the many reconciliation tools that have been proposed in the literature, two main issues remain unresolved: (i) listing suboptimal solutions (i.e. whose score is ‘close’ to the optimal ones) and (ii) listing only solutions that are biologically different ‘enough’. The first issue arises because the optimal solutions are not always the ones biologically most significant; providing many suboptimal solutions as alternatives for the optimal ones is thus very useful. The second one is related to the difficulty to analyze an often huge number of optimal solutions. In this article, we propose Capybara that addresses both of these problems in an efficient way. Furthermore, it includes a tool for visualizing the solutions that significantly helps the user in the process of analyzing the results.
