Four Sol-Gel films were developed by dip-coating electroless nickel-plated samples in different Sols, followed by heat treatment. The effects of the coating times and heat treatment temperature on the corrosion, oxidation resistance and wearing quality of the modified coating were examined. Results show that, after six coating, Sol-Gel films obtained can provide good corrosion and oxidation resistance, and their anti-corrosion quality remains high even after being oxidized at 500 °C for 60 hours. Addition of inorganic molybdenum salt or chromate into the Ti Sol also makes the wearing quality of the Sol-Gel film better.

Abstract In an electric motor, bearing plays a vital role in the performance and reliability which fails frequently due to electrical pitting. To avoid this issue, the bearing can be coated with insulation material. In this present investigation, hybrid sol-gel coating was carried out on bearing steel by dip-coating method. The hybrid sol-gel was prepared using aluminium isopropoxide and calcined alumina powder. The ratio of Sol-Gel to calcined alumina and thickness of the coating was optimized to attain a crack-free surface coating. The crack behaviour was studied. The characterization of Hybrid Sol-Gel was carried out using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and the surface morphology was observed using an optical microscope. The electrical resistance of the coating was measured using an insulation resistance tester. The crack-free surface coating of 40 microns was achieved at a low sol-gel to calcined alumina ratio. The electrical resistance of the coating is found suitable for bearing application. The thermodynamically stable hybrid sol-gel i.e., α alumina -ϒ alumina coating surface is proposed for electrical insulation coating.

We describe a method for controlled preparation of sol-gel ceramic multilayer coatings obtained by dip-coating. The proposed fabrication routine guarantees obtaining crack-free multilayer coatings with control of the thickness and porosity of individual layers. The procedure is applied to obtain a 10-layer ZrO2–3 mol% Y2O3 coating deposited on AISI 310 stainless steel. The microstructure of this coating was investigated by using x-ray powder diffractometry and atomic force microscopy, and special consideration was given to the mechanical characterization of this thin film using ultramicrohardness indentation tests. Our results suggest that these zirconia coatings have good properties for use as protection barriers. Implications concerning general tailoring design of sol-gel dip-coatings are also considered.

ABSTRACT Preparation of Dip-Coating Calcium Phosphate via sol-gel method using natural limestone Bukit Tui as calcium precursors and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as phosphorus precursors with sol-gel process has been investigated. Ethanol was used as solvent and DEA (diethanolamine) was used stabilizing agent. The powder were prepared by calcinated the sol at 950 oC. The products were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red, X-Ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy. FTIR results showed that the vibration form was PO43-, P2O74-, O-H and CO2. XRD patterns of powder with various Ca/P mol ratio showed that the product of calcium phosphate was Ca2P2O7 and also found the hydroxyapatite Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 in Ca/P mol ratio 1,7. SEM images of powder calcium phosphate revealed that their morphology were spheric and homogen. The coating process was done at glass substrate with coating speed 20 cm/min by calcinations at 400 oC. XRD patterns of thin layer showed that the product was Ca2P2O7 and SEM images of thin layer revealed that their morphology were bulk. X-ray diffraction (XRD) method to measure the residual stress in the metal substrate surface layer and the medial oxide layer between thin film and metal substrate was introduced and the sol-gel TiO2-SiO2 thin film was successfully prepared on SUS304 stainless steel substrate by dip-coating process. The macro residual stress existing in metal substrate was analyzed by XRD. It turns out that the compressive stress existing in the metal substrate surface layer decreases with the raising of heat-treated temperature and that the compressive stress of metal substrate surface layer and the tensile stress of the medial oxide layer increase with the increase of the withdrawal speeds of the sol-gel dip-coating. Based on the above study, colored stainless steels of high quality were prepared by sol-gel process for the first time.

Ultrasonically dispersing of HA powders in the mixed ethanol solution of Ca(NO3)2, P2O5 and HPF6, to form a “colloidal sol” for dip coating. The coatings are prepared on Ti6Al4V substrate by dip coating, 150oC drying and 600oC firing. The coatings are characterized by X-ray Diffractometer for the crystalline phase, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy for chemical composition and Scanning Electron Microscopy for the surface morphology. The results show biphasic HA/FA coatings with homogenous distribution of HA particle in the FA matrix can be obtained. The nominal F content of the coatings decreases with the increasing amount of HA, and the surface morphology is rough. These demonstrate the obtained biphasic HA/FA coatings are suitable to response to cells, accelerating bone formation.

In the next step, the same sol-gel solution was used for the fabrication of coatings on monocrystalline silicon (100) using a dip-coating procedure. This resulted, likely due to substrate surface influence, in all coatings having mixed phases of both garnet and perovskite. Thermogravimetric (TG) analysis of the precursor gels was carried out. The sol–gel dip-coating method is a cost-efficient way for the realization of thin films on a planar substrate. In this work, high-quality, low-loss, and low-surface roughness silica–titania thin films are deposited on a glass substrate with the sol–gel dip-coating method. This platform works in the visible to near-IR wavelength ranges and can be useful for several eye-catching photonic components. The paper is comprised of two parts: the first part deals with the development of a low-cost silica–titania waveguide system, whereas the second part provides detail on the numerical modeling of the SWG waveguide filter and SWG waveguide FP-sensor design. The SWG waveguide NIR-stopband filter can achieve an ER of >40 dB and 3-dB bandwidth of 110 nm designed at optimized parameters. The SWG waveguide-FP structure proposed in this work act as a refractive index sensor where the sensitivity is ~120 nm/RIU by reducing the width of the waveguide. This sensitivity can be further enhanced by reducing the waveguide height. We believe that this work is quite important for the realization of low-cost integrated photonic devices based on the silica–titania platform developed via the sol–gel dip-coating method.

Whether ETMS was added or not, two kinds of sol solutions were synthesized. Using two kinds of sol solutions, sol-gel coating films were formed on glass substrates via dip-coating process. Here, seasoning effect of for enhancing properties of sol-gel coating layer on glass was investigated while such sol-gel solutions were left for 7days. Also, their properties such as surface free energy, roughness, thermal property, potential hardness and elastic portion were characterized in order to understand the effect of addition of ETMS. In this case of LS/MTMS sol, the coating film had low surface free energy and more enhanced flat surface than that of the case of LS/MTMS/ETMS sol. ETMS forms hydrophilic hydroxyl group in sol solution, then surface free energy of LS/MTMS/ETMS coating film increased. In the beginning of reaction sol solution seemed to be unstable, but 4days later their coating film properties such as surface free energy and roughness enhanced. The elastic portion of coating films obtained from LS/MTMS/ETMS sol increased with addition of ETMS, but thermal stability decreased.

Copper oxide is a compound that has been considered significant owing to its many advantages such as easy availability of copper in huge quantity, its non-toxic nature and the good electrical and optical properties. It is p-type with bandgap range of 1.21–1.51 eV and has potential of absorption of solar spectrum. In this work, sol–gel chemistry is explored to deposit CuO using cupric chloride dihydrate (CuCl2 · 2H2O) with 5, 10 and 15% concentration of EDTA (capping agent) using low-cost dip-coating and annealed at 400 °C. The bandgap of the CuO films was found to be in the range of 1.3–1.8 eV, which is comparable with the reported values and also suggests quantum shift in these nanostructures. These investigations suggest suitability of these layers as absorber for photovoltaic applications. SEM investigation suggests the uniform growth of layers by dip-coating techniques. Capping also appears to control the grain growth as observed by electron microscopy. Sol–gel dip-coating technique is presented in this study for deposition of flat layers.

Thin alumina films were prepared on stainless steel and glass surfaces by dip coating from an aluminum alkoxide solution. Multiple coatings from a low-viscosity solution were necessary for high quality and sufficient thickness of the films. To determine the bonding mechanism and strength, wavelength dispersive x-ray was used. Aluminum was found to diffuse into the substrate in both cases. The possible bonding mechanism is a combination of diffusion and the formation of chemical compound between the alumina and the substrates. The surface properties of stainless steel, such as microhardness, electric resistance, and corrosion resistance, were substantially improved when coated with alumina.

Abstract Polymer-based nanofibers are good candidates for medical textiles due to their excellent properties including high surface area, breathability and flexibility. Doping polymer nanofibers with different nanoparticles enhances their existing properties. In this study, electrospun polyamide 6,6 (PA6,6) composite nanofibers containing ZnO nanoparticles (<50 nm) in different amounts (1%, 3% and 5%) were first produced by electrospinning technique; then, these nanofibers were coated with sol-gel ZnO solution (0.5 m) via dip coating method at 1000, 3000 and 5000 μm/s speeds. The sol-gel coating process increased the breaking strength of nanofiber mats, while the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles into the polymer nanofibers reduced. Compared to pure PA6,6 nanofiber mats, the ZnO sol-gel coated samples and doped nanofibers had lower reflectance values. In addition, the reflection values decreased as the additive and coating speed increased.

When bioactive coatings are applied to medical implants by means of sol-gel dip coating technique, the biological proprieties of the implant surface can be modified to match the properties of the surrounding tissues. In this study, sol-gel method is used to synthesized organic-inorganic nanocomposites materials consisting of an inorganic titania matrix in which 10 wt% of a biodegradable polymer, the poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL), was incorporated. The synthesized materials, in sol phase, were used to dip-coat a commercially pure titanium grade 4 substrate in order to improve its surface biological properties. Materials were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and a morphological analysis of the obtained films was performed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Coating bioactivity was investigated by soaking coated substrates in a fluid simulating the human blood plasma (SBF) and successively evaluating the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer on their surface by means of SEM/EDX (energy dispersive X-ray).

Optically transparent hydrophobic inorganic-organic hybrid sols was obtained employing Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), Methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), and Heptadecafluoro-1, 1, 2, 2-tetradecyl)trimethoxysilane (FAS), with nitric acid as catalyst. Hybrid coating was dip coated on glass slides. The results showed that the water contact angle of MTES modified SiO2 coating was only 105° . As the weight ratio FAS varied from 0 to 8 wt.%, the water contact angle reached as high as 116.5°. The coated glass presented transmittance of 92%, 2% higher than the non-coated ones. The increase in transmittance suggested an antireflective effect of the hybrid coating. With further SEM characterization of the surface morphology, we finally obtained the optimized optically transparent hydrophobic hybrid coating with the MTES/TEOS_as 1/1(molar ratio) and FAS as 2 wt.%.

Porous Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 ceramic composite membranes were fabricated by the sol-gel method. The effects of constitution of the composite sol, dip-coating parameters and calcination parameters on the morphology, phase composition, pore size distribution and BET surface area of the membranes were investigated extensively. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential scanning calorimeters (TG/DSC), scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), XRD analysis and N2 adsorption-desorption analysis was employed for the membranes characterization. TG/DSC curve shows that the suitable calcination temperature of Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 membranes is 1000°C. The SEM morphology displays a smooth and free-crack layer of Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 composite membranes on the surface of the support after calcination at 1000°C. Furthermore, the membranes were also successfully coated with a good adhesion to the support. The optimal composite membranes were obtained when the moral ratio of Al2O3-SiO2-ZrO2 was 10:2.3:1, the dip-coating parameters were four times dip-coating with every time of 60s respectively.

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficiency of hybrid sol-gel coatings reinforced with electrospinning nanofibers doped with cerium nitrate and ceria particles to increase the corrosion properties of the coating. Poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions doped with cerium nitrate and ceria were electrospun onto clean commercial aluminum alloy AA2024-T3 plates and then coated with a hybrid sol-gel system using the dip-coating procedure. The hybrid materials synthesized via sol-gel chemistry were prepared from inorganic-organic precursors: zirconium (IV) propoxide and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimetoxysilane. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique was applied to evaluate the electrochemical properties of the film whereas scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were employed to characterize the surface characteristics. The incorporation of nanofibers into the sol-gel system provides good barrier properties that increase the corrosion resistance of the aluminum at longer exposure times in saline media. This protection depends of the type of inhibitor loaded within the electrospun nanofibers.

This investigation is concerned with the mechanical property enhancement of the steel alloy by deposition of alumina coating using dip coating method. Alumina coatings were deposited using oxime-modified aluminum(III) isopropoxide as a sol–gel precursor. The Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the coated samples suggest deposition of uniform alumina coatings and alumina composition over steel alloy. The mechanical property of the bare, dip coated steel alloy samples were investigated by the slow strain rate test (SSRT). The SSRT indicates that dip coated steel alloy shows higher ultimate tensile strength as compare to the bare samples.

Base catalyzed sol-gel derived porous SiO2 coatings are prospectively used as antireflective (AR) layer for encapsulating solar modules. In this paper, the properties of SiO2 AR layers coated on solar glass by different dip-coating and annealing conditions are investigated and optimized. It is shown that the transmittance of the AR coating is affected by these preparation conditions which closely related to the thickness and surface morphology. As results, the SiO2 coating had a better performance both in transmittance and adhesion when the dip-coating speed and the annealing temperature are 0.036mm/s and 300°C respectively. Further more, TMCS hydrophobic treatment was adopted to make the AR coating meet the demands of practical application.
