Der volle Inhalt der QuelleHow do representations based on the past and the future organize and transform the relationship to work of sub-Saharan retirees in France and Belgium? In other words, what images are associated with work for them? These questions, at the crossroads of a socio-history of migration and a sociology of work and ageing, aim to establish a sociology of retired people in France and Belgium. Our research is therefore based on a mixed methodology combining biographical interviews (n=50), secondary analysis of statistical data and documentary analysis. At the end of our analysis of the material, we put forward the following thesis: the more complex access to the labour market becomes, the worse immigrant workers are treated and the less likely they are to consider returning to their country of origin

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation stems from the observation of a booming number of elderly who have been gathering in Chinese urban public spaces to engage in collective activities since the beginning of the 2010s – a phenomenon exemplified by the 2013 controversies surrounding the “square dances” (广场舞) practiced by millions of elderly women, criticized as such for being too loud. Drawing from a sociology of ageing perspective and paying close attention to the meanings invested by actors in their daily experiences, I wish to examine this intensification of elderly gatherings by confronting it with the recent experience of retirement of the first cohort of one-child parents, who were born and grew up during the Maoist period, and who constitute the main population of these gatherings, termed “young retirees”. The ethnographic practice, concerned with “following actors” and “letting them deploy their own world” (Latour, 2009) allowed me, through the initial investigation of a Beijing public park, to measure the diversity of spaces of intra-generational sociability these young retirees actually circulated through. Such spaces included public parks and squares, of course, but also stock exchange centers, matrimonial markets, neighborhood-based activity centers or for retired cadres, travel tours, digital groups, as well as health-products companies, all consequently appearing as a coherent network of spaces in which numerous urban young retirees were engaged. Thanks to enquiries conducted in Beijing and Kunming between 2014 and 2016, this network is analyzed in the dissertation from a double perspective. On the one hand, my work endeavors to analyze the different “group styles” (Eliasoph, 2003) in which these young retirees are involved, the variety of forms taken by relationships and interactions within these groups as well as the meanings individuals invest in them in view of their lifecourse, their experience of retirement and the transformations of intergenerational relationships. Four case-studies, each presented in separate chapters, thus allow us to better grasp the various ways young retirees associate with each other in different spaces : the Sunshine Chorus, located in a Beijing park and composed of loosely acquainted participants ; the Joy Squadron, a group of people who were “sent down” to the countryside together at the end of the 1960s and who nowadays gather daily to practice taiji ; the Longevity Group, a pyramidal-sale company of health-products based in Beijing ; and the Yunnan University for the Elderly, a learning institution strongly supervised by the Party-State.On the other hand, beyond these singularities, this dissertation also takes seriously the strong resemblances which echo between these spaces, and therefore analyses from a more structural perspective the meanings of these resemblances : not only the emergence of a Chinese “third age”, as well as a rising generational and age consciousness between people sharing common worries and interests, but also the mobilization of generationnally shared modes of action and resources in order to give meaning to old age in a context of strong uncertainty. Taken as a whole, the dissertation illustrates how, among such resources, the production of collective joy occupies a predominant place

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis doctoral research deals with the individuals who, at the time of retirement, choose to commit themselves to continuing education either within the "classical" university frame, or in University of the Third Age. By observing the multiplicity of training paths, we aim to first study the forms of commitment in retirement, variable according to the registration's educational structures and secondly, to characterize the outlines of the training acitivty in the daily lives of retirees. This thesis's analytical frame is about understanding the individual experience of growing old in its narrow connection to the training process. By recalling its different stages - from initiation to withdrawal - this research shows to what extent training is a medium which makes the ageing individual feel alive. To train one's self during retirement and after is a way to maintain a certain relation to one's self, to others and to the world through a continuing existential quest of identity. Nevertheless, beyond the link between training and the experience of ageing, the fieldwork reveals how the shift of the training activity through different ages of life might, in certain cases, change deeply the meaning of retirement. The retired persons can nevertheless conceive of their commitment to training in different ways : if some first of all seek "self-cultivation" or "keeping themselves busy", few of them set about "professional retraining". In this last case - and this is one of the main results of our study - it's the meaning of retirement itself that is being modified

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis deals with the influence of militant commitment on old age and the influence of old age on militant commitment. Here are depicted the life courses of iron miners in Lorraine, who extended their militant commitment, born in the mines, beyond their closing and beyond old age. Crossing sociology of militant commutment and sociology of aging and old age, this research reveals the positive effects of militant commitment on the aging process and on experience of old age in its cognitive, psychological, psychosociological and social aspects

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis dissertation consists of three independent papers on the left-behind children in China and the left-behind elderly in Thailand and Vietnam. The first paper addresses how school fees in urban areas affect child migration in China. Our findings suggest that higher fees deter migrant workers from bringing their children to urban areas, and more vulnerable migrant workers are most affected by an increase in school fees. The second paper investigates the impacts of adult children’s internal migration and remittances on the labor supply responses of the rural left-behind parents in Vietnam. The results show that mothers tend to work more if they have migrant children, and they tend to work less when they receive remittances from their migrant children. Conversely, fathers tend to be less affected by child migration and their remittances. The third paper examines the impacts of the universal social pension introduced in Thailand in 2009 on the well-being and the labor supply responses of the recipients and their spouses. The empirical results show that the social pension scheme does not generate significant impacts on household poverty status or expenditures, but receiving social pensions has a significant negative impact on beneficiaries' own labor market participation. Further, both men and women are found to respond to their spouses' pensions by leaving their jobs and staying inactive

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleImmigrants in Montreal, Quebec, Canada are experiencing job integration difficulties. Some racialized groups are experiencing even more problems, and specifically those from sub-Saharan Africa are considerate as "racialized groups" which opens the door to greater discrimination and other difficulties (Hadiri 2008; Nikuze, 2011). Drawing from a sociology of "success trajectories" through questions and mobilizing the contribution of several disciplines with a view to solving practical problems, I seek to propose possible solutions to various problems of these immigrants. Field research, based on comprehensive interviews of Kaufmann (1996, 2008), offers a qualitative sociology of "trajectory of success" or socio-professional experiences as "rewarding " or " enhanced." The sample was composed of African immigrants living through such experiences. Through their different paths, the research was based on this primary objective: begin with the central question of the success factors; search for solutions and policy instruments for better socio-economic integration of new immigrants; or even less-recent immigrants’ still experiencing difficulties integrating into employment. The results suggest three categories of contributing factors to the base of the "social and professional success," all arranged under "values," or ways of seeing the world can contribute to this "success" in better harmonizing the Quebec context. This includes personal values, African sociocultural contributions, and Quebec sociocultural resources. If personal values are drawn from an individual’s specific characteristics, African and Quebec sociocultural resources would result from inherent traditions or customs of the cultures of the countries concerned. The analysis and interpretation of these factors conducive to the socio-professional integration of immigrants revealed several tracks that can facilitate employment integration of immigrants as this thesis reported. It remains certain in the face of results that highlight especially the individual factor, the "success" and inserting "successful" or experienced as such remain a function of the actions of public authorities: whatever the values and provisions of individual immigrants, these positive factors remain without effect if laws and policies in the field of immigration impede in any way.
