Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe purpose of this thesis is to examine the conviction of international organisations that consider community radios as an effective tool for economic and human development. Community radios are in fact regarded as a new source of growth to stand up to failing states due to their local presence and ability to broadcast information in local language. They are also representative of a participatory development considered as more effective than the traditional development "top-down" axis. This issue, which is quite recent in theoretical level, is very crucial since successive development policies promoted by states and international organisations have generated disappointments in many developing countries, particularly on the African continent.Due to a lack of theoretical literature in regards to the relationship between community radios development and economic and human development, the field survey was the mainstay of our analysis. We chose to perform the field survey in Senegal for reasons of practicalities and representativeness. Supported by statistics, particularly logistic regressions, and by a summary of a rich theoretical literature on development issues, our analysis convincingly argue that if community radios are a good development tool, their impact is nevertheless currently constrained by a number of limits, including their low budget. Once these limitations are identified, we will put forward proposals to allow community radios to become a truly effective tool for economic and human development while considering cooperatives or promoting the development of radio listening clubs

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAt colonial times, passenger transports in zaire, then called belgian congo, were secondary services sold to the population at low fares by the big transport organizations because they earned their main income from freight services such as on one hand mining goods and food products to be exported and, on the other hand, imported products of any kinds. Nowadays, the analysis of the sncz traffic structure shows that freight traffic is strongly linked to passenger traffic. Moreover, one can notice that commercial exchanges between complementary agricultural production areas of north and south hemisphere (high zaire, equator. . Opposed to shaba, kasai) are almost unexistent white the mining cities of shaba are included in the economical life of south africa countries by means of the railway network and the asphalted road. To remedy to this situation, it is absolutely necessary to have a railway line from kindu to kisangani. The mining cities of shaba being dependent on foreign railway lines costs too much and shows the interest in connecting ilebo port to kinshasa by means of a railway track. At last, one notice that the agricultural regions participation in the national income is too weak compared to that of the town of kinshasa and shaba region because most villages are secluded for want of a road network in a good state. To sum it up, the improvement of passenger traffic, the building of north-south and east-west railway arteries as well as the development of a road network serving agricultural villages will establish a well-balanced economic structure both in the company and in the nation

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis proposes a theoretical framework for studying the society-environment relationship in a systemic perspective especially in the context of social systems that are closely dependant on their local environment, as is still the case for most rural communities in developing countries. Traditional analytical, quantitative approaches (using linear causalities) generally fail to explain the complexity of the relation between a society and its environment. This dissertation employs a dynamic interactive socio-ecological system (SES) model which represents the organization of the interface that links any society to its natural environment. Focusing on the institutional aspect of this interface, i argue that the relation between institutional design and ecosystemic properties is critical for sustainability. Sustainable institutional structures must be sensitive to physical factors which impose constraints on the exploitation of natural renewable resources (e. G. Variability and uncertainty in the availability of a resource in space, time and quantity, conditions of access, visibility, divisibility,. . ) I develop a typology of diverse ideal-types of SESs according to institutional responses to ecological constraints (especially in terms of appropriate institutional scales or regulation of access to resources). I illustrate this typology by examples of historically sustainable SESs in rural communities of Morocco and Tunisia. These communities are experiencing exogenous and endogenous changes or shocks (population pressure, institutional failures, openess to the market, conflicts between different institutional scales of regulation,. . . ) That are modifying the patterns of the socio-environment interface and can lead to ecological degradations if the necessary institutional adaptations fail to occur

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis mixed methods research study seeks to develop, validate and assess the policy- relevance of a Knowledge-based development Model. The model is based on UNESCO’s Knowledge Societies Conceptual Framework. This model is developed from the literature, validated through expert panels and field tested through application in selected primate cities of developing countries located in Africa and Asia. The study seeks to gain insights through the use of the maturity model into how the knowledge assets within the identified cities can be more effectively leveraged to address the strategic societal challenges identified by the United Nations in its post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs).Hevner’s (2004) Design Science Research provides an overarching epistemological, ontological and axiological frame for structuring this investigation. The process of scoping, designing and evaluating the model was guided by Mettler’s (2009) parameters for model development. Drawing on the extant literature, indicators for the nine constructs in the UNESCO framework – human rights, pluralism, inclusion, equity, openness, freedom of expression, universal access to information, cultural and linguistic diversity and education – were developed and the maturity model populated. Consultations with subject experts, as well as a Delphi study with a purposefully selected panel of more than 60 global experts provided the means for validating the Model. Pilot studies in Addis Ababa and Bangkok enabled an empirical exploration of the model, an assessment of the city’s knowledge maturity and provided insights into the model’s policy relevance. Findings from the pilots further contributed to the model’s refinement. This research is the first-ever attempt to develop and empirically apply a knowledge-based development model grounded in UNESCO Knowledge’s Societies Conceptual Framework. This study supports the Organization’s mission of creating policy tools and resources for developing countries, in particular, itprovides a concrete response to Recommendation 10 of the UNESCO World Report: Towards Knowledge Societies (UNESCO, 2005). The potential for knowledge and knowledge processes in overcoming strategic societal challenges, such as the SDGs, is recognized, but there is still limited understanding around how to effectively identify and leverage knowledge at the societal level and to extend knowledge management from the realm of the organization to the society (Bresnahan & Gambardella, 2004; Ergazakis & Metaxiotis, 2011; Ritter, 2006; Yigitcanlar et al., 2012; Yigitcanlar & Lönnqvist, 2013). This field is still in a pre-paradigmatic phase with methodologies, frameworks and approaches still evolving (Ergazakis & Metaxiotis, 2011), so the dissertation and the model it advances contribute to theory-building in the area of societal-level knowledge management, and supporting policy-makers in their response to the SDGs. This research also builds transdisciplinary linkages across disparate fields of endeavor such as knowledge management, intellectual capital as well as human rights and human development.Globalization and the ease of mobility is increasing the heterogeneity of cities, posing new challenges for social cohesion. Previously the largest cities were located in the developed world but in the future they will be in developing countries (UNDESA, 2014). Developing countries are not well prepared to cope with the challenges of rapid population growth and urbanization. Research on cities is still focused on those of the developed world whose conditions and context are materially different from those of the developing world (Atiqul Haq, 2012; Jenkins, 2013; Roy, 2005). Accordingly, this limits the generalizability of existing research. This dissertation therefore contributes to the academic literature on the role of knowledge management in the rapidly urbanizing cities of the developing world
