Intertidal mudflats are complex ecosystems undergoing constant changes, home to infaunal invertebrates (benthic macrofauna), and migratory sites for particular birds : shorebirds. This research focuses on predator-prey interactions between shorebirds and their macrobenthic prey. The present thesis is composed of 8 chapters which illustrate different spatio-temporal scales : from seasons to the decade, and from the bay to the migratory flyway. These studies are based on regular benthic sampling of intertidal flats along the Bay of Biscay (France), as well as sampling data from the Dutch Wadden Sea and the Mauritanian Banc d’Arguin. Macrobenthic data (quality, sizes, densities, biomass) are linked with shorebird counts and data about their feeding behaviour (diet reconstruction from isotopes, faeces, modeling and video observations). These eight studies shed light on particular relationships between some prey and their predators, and the ecology of these interactions (including environmental variables such as inundation time, grain size, temperature, primary production, or even latitude). Particular attention is given to the variability of prey and predator behaviour in time and space. Inserts are included in between chapters to illustrate for instance different diet reconstruction techniques, anti-predation traits in marine molluscs, or relation between energy available and site selection in shorebirds

Underpinned by theoretical concepts of collaboration, sustainable mangement practices (SMP), government and continual learning, this research investigated the contribution of continual learning of SMP in the small to medium enterprise (SME) context. An extensive review of continual learning, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and SME literature was conducted. Building on existing research, this thesis establishes a novel approach to the role of learning in the development of sustainable actions and behaviours through SME exemplars of SMP. Gapp and Fisher’s (2008) model (GFM) provided a lens for the normative re-educative framework that promotes transformation through continual learning including reflection and feedback (Gapp & Fisher, 2007, 2008). Continual learning stimulates organisational development through collaboration and reflection to help build and maintain a competitive advantage in CSR within the SME setting. Existing research on sustainability and CSR in the SME sector is primarily based on northern hemisphere views and corporate contexts. This dissertation provides a general background on CSR and sustainability, and then outlines contemporary views that define CSR through the five dimensions of economic, stakeholder, environmental, voluntariness, and social aspects (Dahlsrud, 2008). SMEs lack connectivity with the term CSR because of the ‘corporate’ element (Baden & Harwood, 2012), and therefore the term sustainable management practices (SMP) has been adopted and interchanged with CSR as a more appropriate fit for the SME context (Stewart & Gapp, 2014).

Piart, Louisa. „Making Things Fit, Making Ends Meet : small Entrepreneurs in Istanbul’s Garment Industry“. Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH009.

Annotation:
In Istanbul’s garment industry, careers are short and worker turnover is high. The combination of flexible production and subcontracting agreements in an informal urban environment propel an increasing number of workers to assume equivocal entrepreneurial functions. These actors are at the core of this dissertation. In order to maintain their positions, irregular workers are often forced to become precariously positioned small brokers who reshuffle the distinctions between production and distribution. Based on empirical material gathered through in-depth fieldwork in Istanbul, my dissertation questions from an anthropological perspective the shifting dynamics of Istanbul’s clothing industry at different scales and the role of small entrepreneurs in shaping these dynamics through their skillful practices and innovations. While small entrepreneurs are essential, they are rarely irreplaceable. In order to explore these issues, this dissertation traces the connections between the various outlets of Istanbul’s garment industry and scrutinizes how their respective valuation processes are intertwined. Over the last decades, in the shadow of official exports to Western Europe, the so-called suitcase trade to neighboring countries as well as the domestic market have flourished. By “making things fit” and “making ends meet,” Istanbul’s small entrepreneurs are conveyor belts between these markets at both the transnational and local scales. Studying them offers new insights into modern industrial settings and the workings of global markets

The aim of this essay is to critically consider Arundhati Roy’s novel The God of Small Things from a postcolonial feminist perspective, with a special focus on how she models different representations of women, taking as a background the discussions within postcolonial feminism about subalternity and the representations of women from the so-called Third World in theory and literature, as well as the concept of agency from Cultural Studies. This purpose is reached by studying and comparing three main female characters in the novel: Mammachi, Baby Kochamma and Ammu, centering on their different ways of relating to the male hero of the novel, Velutha, an Untouchable in the lingering caste system of India. The essay argues that Roy has contributed with diverse representations of subaltern women in the ‘Third World’ who—despite their oppressed and marginalized status—display agency and are portrayed as responsible for their own actions.

Annotation:
Servitization has been a recognized business phenomenon since the late 1980s to innovate a business’s capabilities and processes to create value for their customer through service. Recent technological advances, particularly in the capabilities being developed by the Internet of Things (IoT) could be an enabler for a servitzation transition at an organization. Servitization, enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), has not been considered in the context of Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Due to the traits of SMEs, the potential opportunities from effectively servitizing their business models and the accessibility and affordability of IoT sensors, equipment and tools, there is a gap to be explored. This research provides an understanding of the many challenges SMEs face to remain competitive. Additionally, the research develops a framework that can help to overcome some of these challenges through the utilization of a Servitization business model and IoT technology and capability. The investigation and development of IoT-enabled Servitization for SMEs could potentially lead to new knowledge and innovation. Initially, main traits of SMEs were identified and then aspects of IoT and servitization were ascertained to find those that best align with the SME unique traits. From this understanding, a framework was developed that will allow Small to Medium sized Enterprises to utilise the technology and capabilities from the IoT in order to develop servitization within their business. This framework was then further developed through a longitudinal case study with an SME and validated by a range of industry stakeholders. The outcome resulted in a conceptual framework, based on academic literature, evolved in a real-world case study, and validated by professionals and stakeholders. This validation was conducted through the dissemination of the material on a professional program MSc module, presentation of the research at international conferences, and an event held with regional SMEs to gain insight on the final version of the framework. The framework can be used by SMEs or those consulting SMEs to help them develop strategy that creates value added services in their business that are enabled by the IoT.

Why do some symbolic acts of protest trigger mass mobilization while others do not? Why did riots following the public suicide of a young street vendor humiliated by local authorities in the Tunisian city of Monastir in March 2010 fail to escalate into mass mobilization while a quasi-identical event in the neighboring city of Sidi-Bouzid helped precipitate a successful revolution only few months later? This study examines four cases of successful and failed instances of social mobilization in Tunisia and Algeria in order to present two complementary arguments. Using the signaling logic of informational cascade theory, this study first argues that successful mobilization needs the early involvement of respected local intermediate actors who identify an opportunity for political mobilization and use their prestige and networks to encourage other people to join mobilization. Second, this work shows that successful social mobilization is the result of a surprise factor, which is fueled by the presence of moderate/prestigious actors during the early acts of protest, regime violence, and unusual media coverage. These factors create a perception of exceptionality, which breaks the locally available cognitive heuristic originally in favor of the regime, and allows for successful informational cascades to occur.

CHAN, Wing Yi Monica. „A stylistic approach to the God of Small Things written by Arundhati Roy“. Digital Commons @ Lingnan University, 2007. https://commons.ln.edu.hk/eng_etd/2.

Annotation:
This thesis presents a creative-analytical hybrid production in relation to the stylistic distinctiveness in The God of Small Things, the debut novel of Arundhati Roy. Roy’s text drew the world’s gaze after winning the Booker Prize in 1997. Many studies have been written on diverse aspects of the book, and much has been said regarding the writer’s style. However, those studies rarely focus on the minutiae of Roy’s writing and this thesis provides a greater degree of detailed analysis. The objective is to achieve a deeper understanding of the relationship between style and literary aesthetics in The God of Small Things by studying the stylistic patterns behind Roy’s resonating poetic prose. The stylistic study is carried out adopting two approaches: the corpus-based approach (Part A) and the empirical-creative approach (Part B). The first section provides a stylistic analysis concentrating on the most significant stylistic features of the novel. The study is based on the list of style markers rendered by Leech and Short, Style in Fiction (1981) and elaborated according to the following key aspects that were extracted from the repertoire using my intuitive observation of the novel. These chosen style markers taken together represent key aspects of Roy’s style: (1) Lexis—Roy’s very frequent and particular utilization of adjectives; (2) Grammar—the high concentration of minor sentences and the listing of noun phrases in the text; (3) Figures of Speech— repetition and neologism. The second section presents a self-written pastiche which aims at imitating Roy’s style in literary prose and adapting its approach to a Chinese context. The creative process serves as an experiment on taking pastiche writing as an “experiential” approach to stylistics. In addition, since the resemblance of the pastiche to Roy’s style should not be the only value of the piece, some key themes in the original text are also reproduced. The analysis in Part A illustrates patterns of Roy’s stylistic choices. On the use of adjectives, Roy tends to arrange adjectival elements in sequence, construct a fixed “like” sentence structure, and adopt combining word forms and affective adjectives. On minor sentences, Roy chooses to separate adverbial phrases, sentence fragments starting with “like”, “as though”, and clauses beginning with “that”, “which”, “and”, “but”, “or”. As for repetitions, there is repeated use of set phrases, sentence patterns and recurrent appearance of certain lines and images. Lastly, on neologisms, Roy’s patterns of creating new words include hyphenation, direct merging, and prefix/suffix building. The pastiche is entitled Hong Kong Locust Stand I. By juxtaposing with the original, it is found that many stylistic features in The God of Small Things, are present in the pastiche, though with variation. While stylistic elements cannot totally be independent from the theme, the atmosphere, character and plot of the pastiche also demonstrate qualities representing those in Roy’s novel. The pastiche presents an innovative and respectful way to come to terms with Roy’s style through selective imitation and creative adaptation. In conclusion, it is hoped that this study opens the way for further hybrid studies of style that incorporate both analytical and creative approaches.

This project investigates various ways in which resistance is explored by Kamala Das, Adoor Gopalakrishnan and Arundhati Roy in My Story, Vidheyan, and The God of Small Things respec-tively. “Liminal Resistances: Local Subjections in My Story, Vidheyan, and The God of Small Things” aims to examine the workings and creative subversions of hegemonic discourses of caste, class, gender and color within the local milieu of Kerala, India. By exploring the theoreti-cal apparatuses employed in three diverse texts set in Kerala, this project identifies: firstly, Das’s subversion of Nair Kerala’s sense of gendered and casted normativity in My Story; secondly, Adoor’s depiction of the notion of home that enables self-recognition between the exploited and tyrant ensuring both suppression and libratory self-formation for classed subjects in Vidheyan; and finally, Roy’s portrayal of the conceptual category of whiteness within Kerala as being nei-ther uniformly subservient nor stable as depicted in The God of Small Things. It is hoped that by identifying and exploring the theoretical nuances of resistances in these generically diverse texts—autobiography, film, and fiction-- all set within the local realms of Kerala, this project will contribute a new scholarship in postcolonial studies that will recognize and problematize local instances of subversions and their representations within the Indian subcontinent.

This study explores children's social workers' experiences of and practices in space. It is based on ethnographic research with social workers in two sites and examines data from observations, interviews with social workers, photographs and other images of the spaces in which social workers practised. The study draws on the work of Henri Lefebvre, concerned with how space is produced through spatial practices, conceptions of space and moments of lived space, which occur beyond these conventions and escape complete articulation. The study uses this analytical frame in order to explore how social workers produce certain kinds of spaces as significant in their practice. It identifies a small number of affect-heavy spaces which hold great importance for children's social work: social work offices, children's and practitioners' bodies, families' homes as they are experienced by practitioners during home visits, the wider neighbourhoods which social workers associate with service users. In particular, it identifies social workers' attention to small things and micro-scales in their practice. This enables social workers to present their work as sensitive to that which is imperceptible to others but also leads to a restricted focus and limited engagement with the social and political contexts of service users' lives.

Nowadays, a growing number of startups, who used to produce non- intelligent devices, are seeking transformation and hope to achieve their Internet of Things (IoT) deployment. In other words, they begin to focus on producing smarter devices to meet user’s needs. At present, various IoT cloud platforms are emerging one after another, but using these resources can be costly for small companies. Since the entire IoT system is complex, it involves many links, the purpose of this project is to create a suitable IoT platform for small companies. The system applies JavaWeb technology with the framework of Spring MVC + Spring + Hibernate (SSH), uses open source User Interface (UI) solution and MySQL database management system (DBMS). At the same time, the system adopts Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as the communication protocol to complete the data transmission between devices and the platform. Finally, the system is deployed in the server built on the Raspberry Pi. The system is measured from multiple aspects on the established scenario. The results show that companies and users can use the platform as expected, and companies can expand the system to further realize their IoT deployment in the future.

At the meeting point of three literatures: Mauritian Francophone and Indian literature in English and Hindi, the focus is placed on the construction of female agency in the Indiaoceanic narrative space. Ananda Devi, Arundhati Roy and Krishna Sobti depict female protagonists, defined through their personal crisis, in a social structure dominated by the male logos. Their écriture feminine exposes the terror felt vis-à-vis the female body and female sexuality, seen as the operating cause of the fall of the woman, from model to counter-model. Furthermore, the subject/object dialectics motivated by power, is so fragile that very often the negotiation of this fine line determines the construction of the female protagonist, as well as her claiming of an identity of her own. Cultural studies and gender studies used as theoretical and aesthetic tools help us understand the problematic subalternity of the female character in both postcolonial and patriarchal contexts. Her emergence as subject of discourse takes place via revolt and through the reappropriation of language against “the gaze”, she thus redefines space in a way that destabilizes borders

This thesis investigates the cultural politics of a small group of women through their writing and other activities in 1880s London. Focussed on Olive Schreiner, Eleanor Marx and Amy Levy and the connections they had to one another and to other women, such as Henrietta Frances Lord, Clementina Black and Henrietta Müller, it explores key events in their everyday lives, the writings and texts they produced. It analyses a wide selection of textual sources, re-reading these for small details, intertextual connections and points of disjuncture, to allow for different ways of understanding the mechanics of feminist cultural politics as produced and performed by these interconnected women. Small things in texts can be revealing about such women’s everyday lives and connectedly the cultural politics which underpinned their actions, thus contributing to knowledge about how writing was used strategically and imaginatively to challenge, side-step and overcome oppression and inequality, in these years in London and after. Using the term ‘writing’ in a broad sense to include letters and diaries and other archival sources such as newspaper articles, reviews and manuscript drafts, as well as some selected published work and biographies, the thesis is anchored around four event-driven investigations: Olive Schreiner being accosted by a policeman; the first public performance of Ibsen’s A Doll’s House; the writing of a letter mentioning Eleanor Marx; and, the death of Amy Levy. Relatedly, there are discussions concerning working with historical documents, documenting and archiving the past, researching and representing the past in the present. These investigations allow for the operationalization of a research approach framed by ideas concerning micro, small-scale, everyday life and its qualitative aspects, which together contribute to a re-conceptualisation of a ‘sociology of small things.’ Specifically, it is argued that close and small-scale studies of women’s writing, whether undertaken alone or connected to others, sheds light on the importance of relationship dynamics in connection with writing output, on what writing was produced and what role each text played in larger scale political agendas. Concepts such as palimpsest, liminality and bricolage are interrogated with respect to researching and representing the spatial and temporal interconnectedness of the selected authors and textual sources. And contributions are made to contemporary thinking about epistolarity and social networks, focussing on reciprocity, gift-giving and receiving and notions of ‘letterness,’ along with the defining of boundaries, and the value of determining the nature of ties between women. The thesis also argues that the relationships between intimacy and distance, interiority and exteriority, public and private, are frayed with complicated overlaps.

The manufacturing industry is continuously evolving as new practices and technology are adopted to improve productivity and remain competitive. There have been three well established manufacturing revolutions in recent history and some say that the fourth is occurring currently by the name of Smart Manufacturing, Indusrie 4.0, and others. This latest manufacturing revolution is highly dependent on industrial connectivity. This research aims to gage the ability of Industrial Innovation Platforms (IIPs) to reduce complexity of implementing base-line industrial connectivity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The results of this study would be especially relevant to decision makers in industrial SMEs who are considering implementing industrial connectivity as well as providing insights into approaches for establishing base-line industrial connectivity. The research methodology consists of three main steps: 1) creation of IIP and non-IIP connectivity solutions that enable connectivity of the vast amount of industrial equipment, 2) Gathering measures from solutions in accordance with metrics identified for complexity evaluation, 3) discussion and interpretation of data To have a more complete analysis, quantitative and qualitative data was used and evaluated to address the varying elements of the broad task of establishing industrial connectivity. The research showed that IIPs can reduce complexity for select industrial equipment. Some industrial equipment have robust and streamlined connectivity solutions provided by the IIP. In these cases, the IIP almost certainly will reduce the complexity of establishing connectivity. Other industrial equipment have a solution provided by the IIP which requires piecing together and some component modifications. In these cases, the IIPs reduce complexity of establishing connectivity dependent on circumstances. Lastly, when no form of solution is available through the IIP for the industrial equipment, the IIP's has no ability to reduce complexity other than hosting the server used in connectivity. These findings open additional avenues of research which could improve the understanding of benefits IIPs may provide to SMEs.

The purpose of this study was to identify a group of twenty-something adults to help guide and develop a sermon series to transition a congregation through the grief of losing a primary staff member. The study was originally focused on using the advisory group to develop a preaching style effective for the age group from which the advisory committee emerged. During the course of the study, the church experienced traumatic loss. The study shifted focus to support the collective grief of the congregation and transition to a new person to replace the absent staff member. The advisory group met face-to-face as well as through video conferencing, which was a new experience for the advisory group. The congregation overall successfully transitioned to a new staff member, yet a small though significant group of leaders could not adequately deal with loss, causing additional trauma in the context of the congregation, that, by the end of the project, continued unresolved.

"My thesis compares Arundhati Roy’s The God of Small Things and Anuradha Roy’s Sleeping on Jupiter in order to demonstrate how a) each text is a product of its moment and a reflection of corresponding critical thought and b) how an inversion of gothic tropes in Sleeping reflects a changed world dynamic, a melancholic exploration of epistemological and traumatic loss that can be seen not only as a recognition of the continued power of oppressive systems but a reflection on the failure of cosmopolitanism to “rescue” the global subject from her own isolation and recolonization. I claim that this is not only demonstrated by a change in form and how gothic tropes are presented, but in how homosexuality and deviant sexuality in particular is treated, a reminder that even in texts that attempt to condemn and reject colonizing tendencies, the political moment and its theoretical appendages continue to haunt postcolonial discourse, enabling recolonization and restratifying spaces of resistance. I claim that this recognition need not be totalizing or nihilistic, but that in the recognition itself lies the possibility for resistance, an act of rebellion that must be constantly re-enacted in order to deterritorialize what has been captured and displaced, a fluid and imaginative negotiation that, much like literature, is limitless in interpretation and offers readers constant and multiplicitous possibilities for agency in the face of equally fluid oppressive systems."--Provided by the author.

The world is facing new challenges caused by global warming and is puttingpressure on governments, companies and the civil society to act fast. Like all industries, the wine industry is affected by climate change and wine producers are simultaneously struggling to stay viable while competing on a global market. To become sustainable, transparency is needed in the supply chain so that stakeholders and consumers can influence it. In this study, blockchain technology is investigated as a possible technology that can increase sustainability, transparency and over-all efficiency in the supply chain. The study is a case study and takes place in South Africa. The study takes the perspective of small and medium sized enterprises because they are a big part of the market and has not been researched in this area. Empirical data was collected through interviews, observations and secondary data and it was analyzed through thematic analysis. The results show that there is a lot of administrative work in the industry where compliance and certifications take a lot of time and effort. The smaller wineries, that often want to focus on making good wine, have a harder time with the administrative work since the same person might have several roles or functions in the business. The current traceability system is also one of the best in the world but is largely paper based. In the discussion it is shown that the industry has some elements that would be good for a blockchain system but the smaller producers would probably not dare to invest in such a system since they need improvements in quality or efficiency to stay viable and the technology required is expensive. The thesis concludes that the industry has some structures in place that would be a good base for a blockchain system. This could add an extra level of security and trust to the system. The implementation for the small-scale producers seems far away since the technological requirements are expensive.

Title: Internet of things and cloud computing adoption within manufacturing among small to medium sized enterprises in Sweden. Authors: Tim Kari and Wesley Kleinreesink Background & Problem discussion: Industries in Europe are facing economic challenges related to global societal and technological developments. The adoption of industry 4.0 technologies such as IoT and cloud computing within manufacturing can be used as a solution to these challenges. SMEs form the backbone of the Swedish economy, making up a large amount of the employment and added value within the country, making them important in this context. Little is known about the maturity levels of IoT and cloud computing and the challenges encountered during adoption of of these technologies by Swedish SMEs. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate maturity levels of IoT and cloud computing adoptions and the associated adoption challenges by looking at Swedish SMEs in the manufacturing industry that are adopting or are interested in adopting IoT and cloud computing technologies within their manufacturing. By addressing the maturity levels and adoption challenges found among the cases and providing more insight into the context in which these are occurring. These insights can then be used for the purposes of addressing maturity levels as practitioner and contributing to current literature regarding maturity levels and adoption challenges found. Method: Following an exploratory research strategy, qualitative data has been gathered both in the form of a literature review as well as a multiple case study through semi-structured interviews. The data has then been analyzed by conducting a conceptual analysis, a cross-case synthesis and pattern matching Findings & Conclusion: The findings indicate that the levels of maturity vary highly between categories and cases, with only a few examples of reaching higher (integrated) levels of maturity. Adoption challenges found were mainly centered around organizational and human challenges as opposed to technical ones, indicating that further focus needs to be put on organizational change management. Furthermore, an apparent lack of knowledge among the case companies may explain both the narrow and simple implementations of IoT and cloud computing as well as the lack of drivers for further adoption. The implications of this means that managers need a larger focus on change management and more comprehensive implementation plans. There is also the need to consider the need for digitalization and to do it in an efficient and useful manner. Further research is needed on these topics, with possible avenues being a focus on smaller companies, a study with a larger sample size or a focus on industries with a higher volume of production as the ones presented in this study were all relatively low-volume.

In The God of Small Things (1997), from Arundhati Roy, the transgressions are substantial throughout the narrative, as the majority of them are performed by marginalized characters. In order to comprehend more deeply the reasons which propel the narrative and the characters to such violations, they were divided into three levels in this work: post-colonial, socio-political and affective. The transgressions analyzed here are the ones performed by the characters Velutha, Ammu, Estha, Rahel and Sophie. The levels of the transgressions, their motivations and the concepts of individual and cultural trauma are all correlated so that the intentions of the narrative are elucidated. In the post-colonial level, the concepts of Panikkar (1969), Festino (2007), Forter (2014) and Outka (2011) are applied, whereas Sztompka (2000, 2004), Alexander (2000) and Joseph (2010) are used for the socio-political level; the affective level is observed with notions from Caruth (1995), Bose (1998) and Almeida (2002). The hypothesis of this work is that Roy focuses on the transgressions of minor characters not only to criticize particular elements from the Indian society but also to trigger the reaction of the readers. This is supported by her essays and speeches quoted along the analysis of the novel.

Since the passing of the Education Act (1989) special education policies and documents have promoted partnership as a key component of establishing relevant and inclusive school practices. Professionals and families have been encouraged to work together to resolve issues for children with disabilities. However, little information is available to families and professionals about how to negotiate and achieve authentic partnerships. This thesis makes an important contribution to current knowledge about partnerships by investigating how a group of people (a parent, teacher, paraprofessional and teacher/researcher) make sense of working together to support the inclusion of a student with ASD in his regular school. It is hoped that our descriptions of how we have worked together may help other professionals and families in similar situations. In saying this, the lessons we have learned are ours and are peculiar to the context in which we worked. In New Zealand partnership between professionals and families of children with disabilities is usually enacted through the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process. This study utilises an alternative partnership model, the Quality Learning Circle (QLC). The participants’ learning journeys are described and the experience of partnership for the participants is discussed. Data are drawn from a range of sources to identify those strategies that support, and barriers that hinder, the development of authentic partnerships. Findings identify those conditions that were essential for the partnership in this study to work effectively. Within this research I contrast the key dimensions of the IEP and QLC, showing the IEP process to be wanting. I suggest a partnership model that embraces a dual focus on both the student and those supporting him/her is a more effective tool for supporting the inclusion of children with disabilities. It is argued that there is a lack of recognition in current funding criteria for the difference an effective partnership can make in supporting the inclusion of students ii with severe behavioural challenges. Consideration needs to be given to the costs and issues of ineffective partnerships, with a particular focus on current Ministry of Education practices.

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have grown steadily in recent years.  SMEs generate 59.7 % of value-added and 65.5 % of employment in the ‘non-financial business economy’ in Sweden. It's important for the success of SMEs to be ready to provide high product availability to customers at minimal operation costs. The challenges faced by SMEs are tougher in global competition. There is a rapid growth in the industrial revolution to deal with the challenges as well as competition. This work mainly focuses on implementing resource planning (RP) and adapting to the latest technologies of Industry 4.0 into SMEs to face the challenges. But incorporating Industry 4.0 in a major struggle in the SMEs.  The thesis provides a view of Resource Planning implementation. The authors describe the resource planning implementation techniques and define the requirements for its successful implementation. Resource Planning (RP) adoption factors have been studied quite extensively over the years. However, this master thesis tries to investigate the less explored area of resource planning. Relatively a smaller amount of research has been conducted, when it comes to implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies especially in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).  Industry 4.0 provides new paradigms for the industrial management of SMEs. Supported by a growing number of new technologies, this concept appears more flexible and less expensive than traditional enterprise information systems. This paper presents a literature review of existing applied research covering different Industry 4.0 issues about SMEs. Furthermore, the analysis is done to understand the correlation between the identified factors of Industry 4.0 technologies. The research findings indicate that the use of IoT and Cloud computing are major advantages for resource planning in an SME. The results from the analysis are presented in a framework designed for the future adaptation of these technologies. Despite the research limitations, the findings show a high advantage. Finally, the author suggests a future scope of research.

Annotation:
This thesis argues that a prominent concern among contemporary writers of fiction is the recuperation of lost or occluded histories. Increasingly, contemporary writers, especially postcolonial writers, are using the medium of fiction to explore those areas of political and cultural history that have been written over or unwritten by the dominant narrative of “official” History. The act of excavating these past histories is simultaneously both traumatic and liberating – which is not to suggest that liberation itself is without pain and trauma. The retelling of traumatic pasts can lead, as is portrayed in The God of Small Things (1997), to further trauma and pain. Postcolonial writers (and much of the world today can be construed as postcolonial in one way or another) are seeking to bring to the fore stories of the past which break down the rigid binaries upon which colonialism built its various empires, literal and ideological. Such writing has in a sense been enabled by the collapse, in postcolonial and postmodernist discourse, of the Grand Narrative of History, and its fragmentation into a plurality of competing discourses and histories. The associated collapse of the boundary between history and fiction is recognized in the useful generic marker “historiographic metafiction,” coined by Linda Hutcheon. The texts examined in this study are all variants of this emerging contemporary genre. What they also have in common is a concern with the consequences of exile or diaspora. This study thus explores some of the representations of how the exilic experience impinges on the development of identity in the postcolonial world. The identities of “displaced” people must undergo constant change in order to adjust to the new spaces into which they move, both literal and metaphorical, and yet critical to this adjustment is the cultural continuity provided by psychologically satisfying stories about the past. The study shows that what the chosen texts share at bottom is their mutual need to retell the lost pasts of their characters, the trauma that such retelling evokes and the new histories to which they give birth. These texts generate new histories which subvert, enrich, and pre-empt formal closure for the narratives of history which determine the identities of nations.

The use of mobile telephony has over the past years increased and consequently has the development of services over the mobile phone also increased. This semester we have taken part in a large system development project, our contributions have been designing the graphical user interfaces. In doing that we found the problem with how to mediate trust to a user through a graphical user interface interesting. In this thesis we are focusing on how to develop graphical user interfaces for a mobile phone service that radiate and infuse confidence, security and trustworthiness. In order to attain the purpose, we have used the combination of literature studies and to some extent user involvement with Mock-ups and a Think-aloud technique. We are also describing the importance of taking as well usability and usability goals as the needs for the end users into consideration. We have found that more research on how to radiate and infuse trust through a graphical user interface is needed. This thesis is concluded with some aspects on that subject that we think is important to have in mind. It is of great importance to never leave the user in a state of uncertainty and therefore is clear, sincere and informative feedback necessary throughout the service. Also central in designing graphical user interfaces is to make sure that there is no mismatch in the security of the system and the radiated security.
This thesis was an attempted to decipher and contextualize the evolution of the Chinese green finance policy domain from 1995 to 2021. By constructing a customized analytical toolkit incorporating both temporal and institutional axis, upstream and downstream venues, the thesis traced epistemic debates from both scholars and politicians, institutional arrangements, other reputable materials from government websites, and complemented with a Contentanalysis of 51 cases from the Green Finance Pilot Zones (2017-2020). This thesis found that the green finance policy domain was predominantly constructed by the macroeconomic policy domain and only recently leaned toward the environmental one. Moreover, the found coherence between upstream vision and downstream practice was a result of both implicit guidance by the state and spontaneous participation by the locals. This explorative analysis provided rewarding insights and hence this thesis advocates a policy domain approach for future research agenda.

This research focuses on experimental investigations of the drying and bending properties of wood flakes. Three species (southern yellow pine, sweetgum, and yellow-poplar) were tested. Experiments on flake drying and effect of flake properties (cutting direction and dimension) and an external factor (temperature) were used to evaluate the flake drying process. Drying experiments were conducted using a convection oven. Bending properties of dried flakes were also measured. Modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and strength at proportional limit (SPL) of flakes were measured based on Methods of Testing Small Clear Specimens of Timber (ASTM D143-94) using a miniature material tester. The drying curve was characterized by a second-order/quadratic equation. This equation was then differentiated to get the drying rate curve. Observation on drying and drying rate curves revealed that the rate of moisture loss consists of two falling rate periods; no constant rate drying period was observed. First falling rate drying period is controlled by convective heat transfer. Bound water diffusion controls the second falling rate drying period. Species, cutting direction, dimension, and temperature were found to have significant effect on drying rate of wood flakes. Southern yellow pine has the fastest drying rate followed by sweetgum then yellow-poplar. Differences in drying rate between species were attributed to differences in specific gravity and other factors. Radially-cut specimens have a slower drying rate than tangentially-cut specimens. There were also significant differences in drying rate between the four different flake dimensions. Thickness was found to be the more sensitive parameter in terms of dimensions. As expected, drying temperature also had highly significant effect on drying rate. An increasing trend in drying rate was observed as drying temperature increased. Simulation of flake drying using a numerical model yielded a different result. Simulated flake drying has two drying periods: a constant rate and falling rate. Moisture of the flake decreases constantly and surface temperature increases rapidly to boiling point and remains there in the constant rate drying period. During the falling rate period, rate of moisture transport is limited by the ability of water to diffuse through wood and flake temperature starts to rise. Bending properties were found to vary between and within the three species. Southern yellow pine had the lowest bending stiffness and strength followed by sweetgum while yellow-poplar had the highest bending properties. Radially-cut specimens were found to have lower MOE, MOR, and SPL than tangentially-cut specimens. Drying temperature was also found to have a significant effect on bending stiffness and strength. A decreasing trend in bending properties was observed when drying temperature was increased.

By their nature, scanning probe microscopy (SPM) measurements are ideally suited to the study of organic thin-film transistors (TFTs). In Chapter 3 surface potential measurements are made on TFTs made from the polymer pBTTT. The modification of the surface morphology by annealing into the liquid crystalline phase is examined and the separation between crystalline layers is found to be in agreement with the literature. Kelvin force gradient microscopy (KFGM) measurements provide a very detailed picture of the local potential within the channel of the TFT, allowing for the separation of the device and film mobilities in both the linear and saturation regimes. Once the effects of the contacts are removed, the linear mobility is found to be four times higher than the saturation mobility, although the model that best fits the data assumes a constant mobility. Short channel effects are studied in saturation and an upper bound placed on the magnitude of the channel-length modulation. The contacts are also studied in more detail and it is found that a broad region of the pBTTT film near the contacts shows increased resistance, modulated by the gate voltage. In Chapter 4, KFGM is applied to TFTs produces with zone-cast TIPS pentacene as the active material. The seemingly uniform linear crystallites are found to exhibit a wide range of different behaviours, resulting in device characteristics based on statistical averages of many crystallites. The AFM is used to define a single-crystal device and this is found to contain two distinct regions of widely divergent mobility. The highest mobility regions imply that the maximum theoretical mobility is much higher than is achieved with zone-casting. Greater control over the crystallisation of the film could result in significant increases in device performance. Scanned gate microscopy measurements are also performed and susceptibility to local gating is linked to the conductivity of the film.

This project investigated directed energy techniques for modifying organic films. These techniques show great promise for creating materials with unique, tailored properties. In this work, ion and electron beams were used to fabricate spatially-defined polymer features in nanometre-scale film of small molecules. An alternative pathway to the direct on-surface fabrication of polymer surface coatings was also investigated and showed that a room temperature, atmospheric pressure plasma can facilitate coupling of small molecules at a catalytic surface. In all cases, it was possible to control the optical properties, chemistry, solubility and hardness of the polymer films by varying the processing parameters.

Using a foreign or second language in class can be a harrowing experience for some students. They may fear negative evaluation from teachers and peers, doubting their own ability to successfully communicate their intended meaning in a language less familiar than their mother tongue, and consequently resort to using less risky vocabulary and grammatical constructions in their output – or simply remain silent. If debilitating language anxiety causes students to hold back in discussion, their motivation could be at risk, possibly adversely affecting their attitudes towards language and learning as well as their notions of themselves as potentially successful learners. The purpose of this qualitative field study was to explore teachers’ perceptions and experiences of Foreign language anxiety, FLA, among students participating in oral discussion activities in the Swedish upper-secondary school subject of English, and how they adapt their teaching to help reduce the perceived anxiety among their students. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with two teachers from one school. The results indicated that speaking alone in front of the class is considered the most anxiety-provoking situation to students, and that classroom interactions with teachers and peers could plausibly either increase or reduce FLA, depending on their characteristics. Furthermore, getting students used to talking in a supportive and friendly atmosphere may help students relax and reduce their levels of FLA in the classroom. Finally, this study suggests that an increased awareness of FLA is needed, since it appears to be hard to notice in class and rarely discussed among teachers.
