Finding a boot that fits comfortably in a ski rental shop can be a difficult and tedious task for many people. Having properly fitting boots is important to prevent injuries in the user and reduce the risk of accidents happening on the mountain. The goal of this master thesis was to develop a tool that could make it easier for the customers in a ski rental shop to find the right boot for them. This was done by first sending out surveys to students at LTU and Swedish rental stores and interviewing rental store staff. It was found that a lot of the students don’t want to take the time to properly test their boots in the shop and that the staff don’t feel like they have the time to properly measure and fit every customer with a proper set of boots. It was theorised that making the measuring of the foot easier, faster, and more thorough would increase the chances of customers finding the right set of boots. The measurements that need to be taken for a proper boot matching to be made were found to be foot length, foot width, instep height, and calf volume. Through a design process combining a convergent/divergent and an iterative phase a tool that can take these measurements was designed and developed. The tool is a sock with built in stretch sensors that align themselves on the user’s foot in the correct places as the user puts on the sock. With a microcontroller the sock takes the measurements and sends them wirelessly to a screen that is placed in the store making it easy for the user to read the measurements. On the screen the user can also see what boot they are recommended to rent based on the measurements and book them directly on the screen.

The design of ski boots changed continually from the 1950's until the 1980's, at which point ski boot manufactures started making a plastic shell around a soft liner. This design, which hasn't changed significantly in the last three decades, has a few underlying problems that prohibit it from ever having an optimal combination of comfort and performance. These problems are caused primarily by the need to hold the foot through the insulation, thereby packing out and thinning all insulation in the boot. A new boot design is proposed here that would solve this problem by featuring a skeletal design instead of a shell, which would be located inside the insulation. This new ski boot design features structural "beams" that encase the foot and the lower leg. These beams are close to the foot and leg, thereby holding it tightly. By controlling the thickness of the structure, it can be made to match the natural flex of the ankle. A rotating front part would be used to set the forward lean. An enclosure around this entire structure would be held tight by straps and Boa laces. An analysis of this design showed that carbon fiber was a strong enough material to make the boot, and the model was adjusted to feature a ~4mm displacement when a 145N force was applied.

Greenberg, Susan B. „Control of subtalar motion with the use of ski-boot footbeds“. Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28746.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Research shows that up to 80% of recreational skiers have lower limb alignments which can impede their ability to turn their skis properly (Subotnick,1982). The most difficult of these alignment problems to control within a ski-boot is the varus alignment of the subtalar joint (Macintyre and Matheson, 1988). The use of custom molded footbeds made specifically for use inside of ski boots has been suggested as one method of compensating for a varus aligned foot. This study compared the effectiveness of one brand of custom molded ski boot footbed with that of a noncustom insole in controlling the motions of the lower limb associated with subtalar varus. Specifically these motions were those of the rearfoot and the navicular tubercle, along with the alignment of the tibial tuberosity with respect to the mid-line of the ski boot. In addition, subjects were given the opportunity to assess their subjective feelings of edge control, pain, and fatigue while skiing with both the custom molded footbeds and non-custom insoles. The subject group for this study consisted of 13 advanced level adult skiers who demonstrated more than three degrees of subtalar varus when non-weight bearing. Each subject received a pair of custom molded ski boot footbeds at the beginning of the study. Ski boots that had been cut away at the rear and the medial side were used in the laboratory in order to observe the motions of the navicular tubercle and the rearfoot as the subject transferred their weight in a simulated skiing motion. The right and left navicular tubercle, tibial tubercle, and the insertion of the Achilles at the calcaneus of each subject were located by palpation and marked. After sufficient practice of the weight transfer motion, two trials of each landmark were photographed using 35mm slide film. The subjects were first photographed while using the non-custom insoles and again using the custom molded footbeds. The slides were digitized and comparisons were made between the two types of insoles for both the start and end locations of the landmarks as well as for the ranges of motion through which the landmarks traveled. Statistical analyses of the group results indicated that there was significantly less (p=0.000) navicular motion during the shift from the start to the end positions with the use of the custom molded footbeds as compared to the non-custom insoles. The rearfoot angle was significantly less at both the start (p=0.000) and end (p=0.000) positions with the use of the custom footbeds as compared to the noncustom insoles. There was no statistical difference between the amount of rearfoot motion allowed by either type of insole. The tibial tubercle was positioned significantly (p=0.000) closer to the mid-line of the ski boot when using the custom footbeds than with the use of the non-custom insoles. These results indicate that the custom footbeds domaintain the subtalar joint in a more neutral position than do non-custom insoles. During the skiing section of the study the subjects rated the custom footbeds as providing better edge control (p=0.000) and resulting in less fatigue (p=0.000) than noncustom insoles. There was no statistical significance when comparing the ratings given by the group for the level of pain experienced with the use of either type of insole. There was a statistically significant improvement (p=0.000) in race times for the group when using the custom footbeds as compared to the non-custom insoles. The results of this study indicate that custom molded ski boot footbeds are able to control subtalar motion more effectively than a non-custom insole. It appears that this control of subtalar motion enhances the skiing experience by increasing edge control and reducing the amount of fatigue experienced.

Annotation:
This thesis is an examination of prehistoric maritime mobility in the Arctic regions of North America through the ethno-archaeological analysis of skin boats. Covering over 100,000 km of coastline, the skin boat traditions of the Arctic and Subarctic zones are arguably among the most expansive watercraft technologies in the world, dating back at least 10,000 years. Despite the considerable material record generated by this geographically and chronologically extended use, and the potential this record contains for understanding Arctic maritime mobility, skin boat datasets are rarely considered in scholarly discussions on prehistoric exchanges and population movement. This study aims at closing this gap by focusing on the skin boat record as a key dataset for assessing the scale, nature and significance of maritime mobility in the North-American Arctic. The analysis of particular regional trends and cross-regional patterns is based on review of three case studies. Moving west to east this review starts in the Bering Strait region with a particular focus on the Kukulik site on St. Lawrence Island. Maritime mobility in the Chukchi Sea region is assessed through the archaeological assembly of the Birnirk site near Point Barrow, Alaska. The third case study is focused on the Qariaraqyuk site on Somerset Island, extending the geography of the research to the Central Canadian Arctic. Individual boat parts and the information they provide for reconstructing complete watercraft are analyzed along with the boat fragment frequency and spatial distribution. This provides understanding of the statistical and social makeup of seafaring in Arctic North America, of the logistics of maritime mobility, of the larger scale cross-regional and chronological patterns of skin boat design and use, and, ultimately, of the role of seafaring in constructing cultural landscapes of the prehistoric Arctic.

Abstract   Fairs already existed as a phenomenon in the Middle Ages and has since then been used as a channel for sales and marketing. Today, companies and organizations compete to get the attention of visitors by creating attractive displays with the winning concept that will attract people and get them to put the company name to memory.   This is what Karlstad University had in mind when they designed the specification for this project. The background to this project is that the University is represented on a number of exhibitions each year, around the country. The mission has thus been to develop a new concept with an associated design at the university's stand. The goal of this project is not primarily to get visitors to apply for the university, but that they will remember it in any future consideration regarding further studies.   The project was developed using qualitative methodology. Interview manuals was designed to help identify what the communication department, student ambassadors and counselors thoughts of stand concept were. Based upon the information that these interviews showed, we created a template of key aspects to use  in making new material. In addition, the communication strategy of the university studied, and theories of marketing, branding, sensory marketing and places have been processed to create the best stand concept as possible.   The result created consists of a concept with accompanying printed materials. Printed matter produced includes a brochure, two sets of roll-ups and a display background. The final concept was a recurring summer theme based in the respondents' own associations and opinions, while it alludes to the University's main color that is yellow. The feeling this booth appearance should convey is that a visitor is outside Karlstad University in the summer. This feeling is reinforced by the stand's floor  that is a lawn that joins the display background image representing the university and the lawn beyond. Our assumption is that this represents something beyond a normal stand concept and thus etched in the visitors memory.

Annotation:
The Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is the most damaging infectious disease in pigs worldwide. The etiologic agent is an Arterivirus, the PRRSV, which presents a large genetic diversity. PRRSV infection is frequently associated with influenza virus co-infection. Vaccination is a highly suitable way to control these viruses. In the case of PRRSV, the most effective commercial vaccines are modified live vaccines (MLV) which induce only a partial protection against heterologous strains. In the case of the influenza virus, the available inactivated vaccines show the same weakness. With the goal to control emerging influenza and PRRSV variants, I evaluated vaccine strategies involving conserved viral antigens between strains which were targeted to antigen-presenting cells (APC) and delivered by different routes and methods. In the case of influenza virus, the targeting of conserved antigens (HA2, M2e and NP) to CD11c led to increased IFNγ T cell responses only when vaccines were delivered by the intramuscular (IM) route and had no effect on the humoral response. The intradermal route exacerbated disease following challenge whereas the IM route reduced the symptoms, the duration of viral excretion in correlation with higher anti-HA2 and anti-M2e antibody responses. In the case of PRRSV, which was my main subject, I sought to optimize the IFNγ T cell responses by using DNA vaccines encoding antigens with conserved T-epitopes between strains, and targeted to APC. Indeed, whereas viral mutants escape neutralizing antibodies, it has been proposed that the IFNγ T cell responses are instrumental for cross-protection. I showed that the broadest T cell responses were induced by DNA vaccines combined to nanoparticles PLGA (NP) injected by the intradermal route, followed by electroporation (EP) compared with EP-only, intradermal route-only or transcutaneous dissolvable microneedles. This optimal immunogenicity was associated with a high transfection level of skin cells, an accumulation of inflammatory cells, and dendritic cells mobilisation. Next I used the EP+NP method to immunize pigs with plasmids encoding conserved PRRSV antigens targeted or not to APC via CD11c or XCR1. Pigs were immunized either with repeated injections of DNA alone or with a prime-boost DNA-MLV. The DNA-MLV regimen induced improved humoral and IFNγ T cell responses compared to DNA alone or MLV alone and the APC-targeting significantly increased the humoral response but not the IFNγ T cell response. Finally, I evaluated the DNA-MLV regimen efficacy, with an applied perspective, using naked DNA without NP and delivered by EP or by a convenient needle free injection technology (PJ). In these conditions, the DNA prime did not significantly increase the IFNγ T cell response induced by the MLV, but clearly increased the humoral response with a benefit of the APC-targeting. However, the immune potentiation induced by the DNA prime did not lead to an improved protection following a heterologous challenge. The heterologous protection was not correlated to the measured humoral and IFNγ T cell responses, and neutralizing antibodies were undetectable. Thus cross-protective effectors have not been sufficiently activated by our DNA-MLV strategy and the immune correlates of protection against heterologous PRRSV are still to be identified to develop cross-protective vaccines. Finally, this work shows that the effect of APC-targeting in pigs is influenced by delivery routes and methods and by vaccine regimen such as the prime-boost DNA-MLV

In Old West Norse there is mention of an Arctic skin and osier boat, which was paddled with Old West Norse (húð)keipr, diminutive keipull, formed on Germanic *kaip- ’bend, unfold’ according to the construction method. In East Norse there was a corresponding wooden boat, e.g. Swedish själ-myndrick, formed on mynda verb ‘paddle’ (< Primitive Norse *mundian ‘aim at a certain goal, take aim’). In the provinces south of this verb’s area of distribution there occurs instead svepa verb ’paddle’ (< Primitive Germanic *swaipōn ‘swing’). The earliest instances of Nordic rowing navigation are found in Norway and Denmark. Instances of rowing in the Baltic area are found on some picture stones from about the 6th century. But oarlocks with a grommet were probably used already for the steering oar in the paddled boats of the Bronze Age. An early oarlock (with a grommet) is that made of a goose-necked piece of wood, Old Swedish hār, Old West Norse hár (< *hanhu-, *hanha- ‘branching, fork of a branch’) and Old West Norse keipr (< *kaip- ‘something with a crooked or bent (-back) shape’. The word hár exists as a first element in Old Swedish hā-band ‘oar-loop’, Old West Norse há-bora ‘oar-port’ etc. Old West Norse keipr ‘oarlock’ has no ancient compounds. East Nordic hamna (> Finnish hamina), Old Danish hafnæ (Old Frisian hevene) and West Nordic hamla (Faroese homla, Old English hamele, hamule) ‘oar-loop’ occurred early on the oarlock with a grommet; hamna may be a derivation of the stem in Primitive Norse *haƀan verb ‘hold (fast)’, alternatively *hafna- ‘clasp something’; hamla derives from a Germanic *hamilōn with the meaning ‘bridling band’. Centrally in the Nordic area hamna (Danish havne) and hamla ‘oar-loop’ were also used denominatively with the meaning ‘row pushing in a hamna/hamla (oar-loop)’. In addition there is the Swedish dialectal sväva (~ sveva, svävja) ‘row (back, break etc.) with pushing rowing’ and in the group of older verbs for rowing there is East Swedish hopa < Primitive Norse *hōƀian ‘fix one’s eyes upon a certain goal (in the distance)’. With word formations on Germanic *þulna- ‘wooden plug’ there arose from the Middle Ages and in the North Sea countries a new terminology for the oarlock: Norse tull, toll ‘oarlock with a thole pin’. Even younger concepts are tullgång ‘oarlock with two thole pins’, årklyka, årgaffel ‘oar crutch’. A distinctive trait of Old Swedish hār and hamna, Old West Norse hár and hamla and keipr and other common words for the oarlock is in these words the shift of meaning ‘oarlock of a specific kind’ > ‘almost any kind of oarlock’. Finally, the question arises whether or not the word svear of a tribe by Lake Mälaren could be tied to the paddling through a connection to the stem of the verbs svepa and sväva.

Annotation:
A study was conducted to investigate simple, cost-effective manufacturing techniques to delay skin-core delamination, micro-buckling and bearing stress failures resulting from fastener-hole interactions. Composite sandwich panels, with and without damage arrestment devices (DADs), were subjected to monotonic compression at a rate of 5mm per second, and compression-compression fatigue at 50% yield at an amplitude of 65%, under temperatures of 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, and 200 °F. The sandwiches tested were composed of two-layer cross-weave carbon fiber facesheets, a polyurethane foam core, and an epoxy film adhesive to join the two materials. The most successful method to delay the aforementioned failures involved milling rectangular slots in the foam core perpendicular to the holes and adding three additional layers of carbon fiber cross-weave. For the monotonic cases, the ultimate load increases were 97, 87, 100, 131, 96, and 119% for each of the respective temperatures listed above with a negligible weight increase. For the fatigue cases, the number of cycles for each test case was nearly identical. This still represents a large improvement because the yield used in the loading condition for the specimens with DADs was 97% greater than the specimens without DADs. The experimental results were compared with a finite element model (FEM) built in Abaqus/CAE. The numeric and experimental results showed a strong correlation. All test specimens were manufactured and tested in the California Polytechnic State University Aerospace/Composites Laboratory.

With shows such as Big Bang Theory and the increased mainstreaming of San Diego Comic-con, now more than ever before, it is acceptable to be a “nerd”. The question now becomes what efforts are being made to appeal to fans of color in traditional “nerd” activities, specifically comic books (this can include television shows and movies based on comic book characters), anime, and science fiction. Throughout the decades, there have been various attempts to have a discourse about the lack of diversity in nerd culture, both among its creators and characters from various properties considered beloved to nerds. Only, at the time of this writing, in recent years does there seem to be an increase among fans of color discussing these issues in the world at large, and not just in their own social group(s). This research will discover how minority fans feel about representation, or lack thereof, in the three above fandom. It will examine how minority fans feel about specific instants involving race and ethnicity in fandom from the past year. What I have discovered is that, issues of race are not discussed among the majority of fans and creators. Occasionally, when such issues are discussed there is an amount of hostility from white fans.
