This thesis examines the embodiment of the sexed body and the struggle of fitting into the narrow frames of what a woman is supposed to behave and look like in Japanese cinema. Using the medium of film, I, therefore, seek to produce knowledge regarding the internalized gaze of the oppressor, and self-objectification, caused by the capitalist heteropatriarchy. Thus, I am drawing from cyborg feminism, and the second wave of sexual difference theory’s concept of becoming, expanded upon by the Italian-Australian philosopher Rosi Braidotti. I further use the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of masculine domination and the American philosopher Gayle Rubin’s charmed circle, in creating a theoretical framework, and using the methods of cultural and feminist film analysis to contextualize the films and locate the subjectification of the women. The movies that I will be analyzing are the Japanese director and poet Sion Sono’s Antiporno (アンチポルノ, 2016) and the Japanese director and photographer Mika Ninagawa’s Helter Skelter (ヘルタースケルター, 2012), which both center around two women and their struggle in becoming-cyborg, in relation to power, trauma, sexuality, technology, and beauty ideals in ‘modernized’ Japan. In that sense, I will study the phenomenon of operating outside the lines of social norms of femininity and desire.

Noted for both vocal and symphonic output, Gustav Mahler's musical sophistication constantly puzzled scholars in the past decades. In his symphonic works, the mixed forms and styles in combination with the vocal influence make it abstruse for listeners to detect the meaning of the use of traditional instruments. The solo violin, which has an extensive history of appearing in symphonic compositions since the Baroque era, is an instance of a traditional instrument given an unusual function. For instance, Mahler's violin solos do not tend to showcase the virtuosity of the instrument as they normally do in orchestral music. In order to closely examine the role of the solo violin, I rely on aspects relating to introversive semiosis such as harmonies, rhythms, textures, phrase structures, and forms; then my focus shifts to extroversive semiosis, specifically to topics and contextual factors. By considering the violin as a musical sign, listeners can comprehend the instrument's structure, syntax, and ultimately the complex logic of Mahler's musical discourse.

During the years of the Holocaust, song literature was needed to fulfill the unique needs of people caught in an unimaginable nightmare. The twelve years between 1933 and 1945 were filled with a brutal display of man's inhumanity to man. Despite the horrific conditions or perhaps because of them, the Jewish people made music, and in particular, they sang. Whether built on a new or an old melody, the Holocaust song literature continues to speak to those of us who are willing to listen. This body of work tells the world that these people lived, suffered, longed for vengeance, loved, dreamed, prayed, and tragically, died. This repertoire of songs is part of the legacy, the very soul of the Jewish people. This study contains a brief look at the historical circumstances, and through the song literature of Hirsh Glick, Mordechai Gebirtig and Simon Sargon, life within the ghetto, the concentration camp, the decisions families had to make, the choices to fight back against incredible odds, the place of faith within this nightmare, and a look at the lives and works of the composers themselves.

The focus of this study is the relationship between the Chinese central government and Song Zheyuan, the key provincial leader of North China, in the period immediately preceding the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the impact of tensions in that relationship on Japan policy. The most urgent task confronting the Chinese government in the late 1930s was to secure an equitable and formally-negotiated settlement of outstanding questions with the Tokyo government. The efforts of the Nanjing government are examined in terms of the divisions within the government and in the context of the public debate on Japan policy which was extended to cover fundamental questions of the regime's diplomatic maturity and the function of diplomacy in the new state. However, the Sino-Japanese question was not purely a diplomatic issue. Tensions between central and northern regional authorities and continuing provincial independence combined with persistent political and military interventions by the Japanese armies in North China to undermine the initiatives of the centre as the lack of an effective central Japan policy eroded regional confidence in the centre. By 1935 Nanjing's control in the North was breaking down and the initiative in contacts with Japan in the region passed to provincial leaders: Song Zheyuan emerged as a key figure in relations with Japan. In 1935-7 Song occupied all the significant political and military offices in Hebei and Chaha'er provinces. Nanjing was entirely dependent on Song for the defence of the North, yet Song remained ambivalent towards Nanjing and Japan, berating the central authorities for their 'abandonment' of the North while maintaining close contact with the Japanese military. While he had no formal role in foreign affairs, his informal function in the relations with Japan demands closer attention.

The purpose of this project is to examine the extent to which sign language can be used as a means of communicating the text for hearing audiences attending classical vocal recitals. The project discusses historical practices for providing text translation of classical repertoire sung in foreign languages and gives an account of the increasing popularity of sign language interpretation for hearing audiences within the contemporary, commercial music industry. A trial performance is undertaken in order to examine the effectiveness of the idea in the context of classical vocal music. Feedback is gathered from the audience and singer’s perspective during performance and through observations made by studying the video documenting the performance.<br><p>The sounding part of the work consists of the following recording: NJones100619. The Corona virus situation spring semester 2020 has caused limitations in the recording possibilities. The recording may be supplemented. </p>

synaptic weights, able to homeostatically restore the ability to learn new things, erasing memories overnight. This phenomenon is typical of slow-wave sleep (SWS) and characterized
by non-Hebbian mechanisms, i.e., mechanisms independent of synchronous neuronal activity. Another view holds that sleep also triggers the specific enhancement of synaptic connections, carrying out the embossing of certain mnemonic traces within
a lattice of synaptic weights rescaled each night. Such an embossing is understood as the combination of Hebbian and non-Hebbian mechanisms, capable of increasing and decreasing
respectively the synaptic weights in complementary circuits, leading to selective memory improvement and a restructuring of synaptic configuration (SC) that can be crucial for the generation of new behaviors ( insights ). The empirical findings indicate that initiation of Hebbian plasticity during sleep occurs in the transition of the SWS to the stage of rapid eye movement (REM), possibly due to the significant differences between
the firing rates regimes of the stages and the up-regulation of factors involved in longterm synaptic plasticity. In this study the theories of homeostasis and embossing were compared using an artificial neural network (ANN) fed with action potentials recorded in the hippocampus of rats during the sleep-wake cycle. In the simulation in which the ANN did not apply the long-term plasticity mechanisms during sleep (SWS-transition REM), the synaptic weights distribution was re-scaled inexorably, for its mean value proportional to the input firing rate, erasing the synaptic weights pattern that had been established
initially. In contrast, when the long-term plasticity is modeled during the transition SWSREM, an increase of synaptic weights were observed in the range of initial/low values, redistributing effectively the weights in a way to reinforce a subset of synapses over time. The results suggest that a positive regulation coming from the long-term plasticity can
completely change the role of sleep: its absence leads to forgetting; its presence leads to a positive mnemonic change<br>Diversas linhas de pesquisa demonstram que o sono favorece a consolida??o de mem?rias e o aprendizado. Previous issue date: 2013-05-20<br>Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico<br>Dopamine (DA) is known to regulate both sleep and memory formations, while sleep plays a critical role in the consolidation of different types of memories. We believe that pharmacological manipulation of dopaminergic pathways might disrupt the sleep-wake cycle, leading to mnemonic deficits, which can be observed in both behavioral and molecular levels. Therefore, here we investigated how systemic injections of haloperidol (0.3 mg/kg), immediately after training in dark and light periods, affects learning assessed in the novel object preference test (NOPT) in mice. We also investigated the hippocampal levels of the plasticity-related proteins Zif-268, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and phosphorylated Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases II (CaMKII-P) in non-exposed (na?ve), vehicle-injected controls and haloperidol-treated mice at 3, 6 and 12 hours after training in the light period. Haloperidol administration during the light period led to a subsequent impairment in the NOPT. In contrast, preference was not observed during the dark period neither in mice injected with haloperidol, nor in vehicle-injected animals. A partial increase of CaMKII-P in the hippocampal field CA3 of vehicle-injected mice was detected at 3h. Haloperidol-treated mice showed a significant decrease in the dentate gyrus of CaMKII-P levels at 3, 6 and 12h; of Zif-268 levels at 6h, and of BDNF levels at 12h after training. Since the mnemonic effects of haloperidol were only observed in the light period when animals tend to sleep, we suggest that these effects are related to REM sleep disruption after haloperidol injection<br>A dopamina (DA) regula tanto o sono quanto o processo de forma??o de mem?rias, enquanto o sono desempenha uma fun??o essencial na consolida??o de diferentes tipos de mem?rias. Observamos que esse tratamento causou um preju?zo mnem?nico apenas nos camundongos testados pela manh?. Devido ? maior ocorr?ncia de epis?dios de sono durante a fase clara dos roedores, acreditamos que esse d?ficit pode estar associado a uma cascata de plasticidade hipocampal, a qual envolve a express?o de diferentes mol?culas em per?odos distintos ap?s a exposi??o ao est?mulo mnem?nico inicial. Para testar tal hip?tese, realizamos imunohistoqu?mica (IHQ) em tecidos de animais na?ve n?o expostos (NV), bem como de animais expostos aos objetos com posterior inje??o de halo ou salina (ve?culo - VH), perfundidos 3, 6 e 12h ap?s o est?mulo inicial. Quantificamos a express?o hipocampal (CA1, CA3 e GD) das prote?nas CaMKII-P, Zif-268 e BDNF, atrav?s de densitometria e contagem de c?lulas (somente para Zif-268). Observamos um aumento parcial na express?o de CaMKII-P em animais VH 3h, na regi?o CA3. Quanto ao grupo halo, houve uma redu??o dos n?veis de CaMKII-P nos tr?s hor?rios analisados; de Zif-268 em 6h, tanto em CA1 quanto CA3; e de BDNF em 12h, apenas no GD. O Sistema de Plantio Direto (SPD) apresenta destacado papel na produção agrícola brasileira, ocupando extensas áreas, sob as mais variadas condições de solo, clima e técnicas de manejo do sistema produtivo. Em relação ao sistema convencional de cultivo, ocasiona profundas alterações físicas, biológicas e químicas no solo. O estudo da solução do solo e de sua variação perante as práticas de cultivo são de suma importância para o manejo da fertilidade do solo e da nutrição de plantas. Estudou-se o efeito de formas de aplicação de calcário (4,5 t ha-1 incorporado ou aplicado em superfície, numa só aplicação ou parcelado em três anos) e de doses de gesso (3; 6 e 9 t ha-1) na fase de implantação do SPD em área de pastagem nativa, na composição e na especiação iônica da solução do solo (extrato aquoso 1:1), até a profundidade de 0,8 m. Utilizaram-se amostras de um experimento de campo instalado em 1998 sobre um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico textura argilosa, em Ponta Grossa/PR. As amostras foram coletadas nas profundidades de 0-0,05; 0,05-0,1; 0,1-0,2; 0,2-0,4; 0,4-0,6 e 0,6-0,8 m no mês de maio de 2003, após a colheita da cultura da soja. A calagem, tanto superficial como incorporada, promoveu aumento do pH da solução do solo até 0,2 m, mas não afetou os teores de carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD) e os valores de força iônica. A calagem, exceto na camada de 0-0,05 m com a forma incorporada de aplicação, incrementou os teores de Ca e Mg até 0,2 e 0,6 m, respectivamente, mas somente o Mg teve acréscimo de sua atividade. O gesso promoveu incremento da concentração de SO4 -2, assim como da concentração e atividade do Ca em solução, ao longo de todas as profundidades amostradas. Houve efeito negativo do gesso em relação ao Mg, promovendo tanto lixiviação, como redução da atividade deste nutriente. Os teores dos demais ânions analisados (Cl-, F-, NO3 -, PO4 -3) e de Al em solução não foram afetados pelos tratamentos. Os ânions orgânicos e o F- foram os principais agentes complexantes do Al em solução, sendo que a forma livre Al+3 foi de baixa ocorrência e baixa atividade, sem sofrer efeito dos tratamentos. Na fase sólida do solo, o Al esteve predominantemente complexado pela MO. Para Ca e Mg, os principais ligantes em solução foram os ânions orgânicos, no entanto, em muito maior proporção para o Ca. Para o P (PO4 -3, HPO4 -2, H2PO4 -), o principal par iônico foi com o Al, enquanto para o SO4 -2, foi com Ca e Mg principalmente. O Fe, por sua vez, teve sua especiação dividida entre as formas hidroxiladas e ligada ao COD. Os elementos Mn, K, N-NO3 - e Cl não formaram pares iônicos com outros elementos em proporções significativas na solução do solo, ao longo de todas as profundidades.<br>No-tillage systems (NTS) play a very important role in Brazilian agriculture. NTS are widespread through extensive areas with different climates, soil types and under different management production systems. NTS deeply alter the biological, physical and chemical properties of the soils, as compared to conventional tillage. Soil solution studies, evaluating nutrient concentration changes under management practices, are very important in soil fertility, plant nutrition and management. The effect of liming and three methods of application (one application of 4.5 t ha-1 incorporated, one application of 4.5 t ha-1 surface applied, and, 1.5 t ha-1 applied in each of three years) on the composition and ionic speciation of soil solution, during the implantation of NTS in a native pasture area until 0.8 m depth was studied. The effect of gypsum rate (3; 6 and 9 t ha-1) was also studied under the same conditions. Soil samples were extracted from a field experiment installed in1998 in Ponta Grossa/PR. The selected soil was classified as a dystrophic clayey Rhodic Hapludox. After the harvesting of soybeans in May of 2003, the samples were collected at the following depths: 0-0.05; 0.05-0.1; 0.1-0.2; 0.2-0.4; 0.4-0.6 and 0.6-0.8 m. Liming increased the pH of soil solution, but did not affect dissolved organic carbon (DOC) contents and ionic strength values. It was observed that pH was increased up to a depth of 0.2 m. Liming increased calcium and magnesium concentrations up to 0.2 m and 0.6 m depth, respectively, except for first layer with incorporate lime. However, only Mg showed an increase in activity. Gypsum application increased the SO4 -2 e and Ca concentration, and Ca activity through the studied profile. A negative effect of gypsum was the leaching of Mg and a reduction in its activity. The concentration of anions (Cl-, F-, NO3 -, PO4 -3) and Al were neither affected by gypsum or by lime. The main Al complexing agents in solution were organic anions and F-. A low free Al+3 concentration and activity was detected, with no differences management treatments. The Al in the solid phase was mainly complexed by organic matter. The Ca and Mg were complexed by organic anions, and the effect was more pronounced for Ca. The P (PO4 -3, HPO4 -3, H2PO4 -3) was main complexed for Al, while the SO4 -2 was with Ca and Mg mainly. Fe was the form Fe-OH and Fe-DOC. The elements Mn, K, N-NO3 - and Cl formed insignificant quantities ionic pairs in soil solution in whole layers.

La Langue française Parlée Complétée est un système peu connu du grand public. Adapté du Cued Speech en 1977, il a pour ambition d’aider les sourds francophones à percevoir un message oral en complétant les informations fournies par la lecture labiale à l’aide d’un geste manuel. Si, depuis sa création, la LPC a fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches scientifiques, peu de chercheurs ont, jusqu’à présent, étudié les processus mis en jeu dans la perception de la parole codée. Or, par la présence conjointe d’indices visuels (liés aux lèvres et à la main) et d’indices auditifs (via les prothèses auditives ou l’implant cochléaire), l’étude de la LPC offre un cadre idéal pour les recherches sur l’intégration multimodale dans le traitement de la parole. En effet, on sait aujourd’hui que sourds comme normo-entendants mettent à contribution l’ouïe et la vue pour percevoir la parole, un phénomène appelé intégration audio-visuelle (AV).<p><p>Dans le cadre de cette thèse nous avons cherché à objectiver et caractériser l’intégration labio-manuelle dans la perception de la parole codée. Le poids accordé par le système perceptif aux informations manuelles, d’une part, et aux informations labiales, d’autre part, dépend-il de la qualité de chacune d’entre elles ?Varie-t-il en fonction du statut auditif ?Quand l’information auditive est disponible, comment le traitement de l’information manuelle est-il incorporé au traitement audio-visuel ?Pour tenter de répondre à cette série de questions, cinq paradigmes expérimentaux ont été créés et administrés à des adultes sourds et normo-entendants décodant la LPC. <p><p>Les trois premières études étaient focalisées sur la perception de la parole codée sans informations auditives. Dans l’étude n° 1, le but était d’objectiver l’intégration labio-manuelle ;l’impact de la qualité des informations labiales et du statut auditif sur cette intégration a également été investigué. L’objectif de l’étude n° 2 était d’examiner l’impact conjoint de la qualité des informations manuelles et labiales ;nous avons également comparé des décodeurs normo-entendants à des décodeurs sourds. Enfin, dans l’étude n° 3, nous avons examiné, chez des décodeurs normo-entendants et sourds, l’effet de l’incongruence entre les informations labiales et manuelles sur la perception de mots. <p><p>Les deux dernières études étaient focalisées sur la perception de la parole codée avec du son. L’objectif de l’étude n°4 était de comparer l’impact de la LPC sur l’intégration AV entre les sourds et les normo-entendants. Sanders (1977:114) contends that “[s]in comes only when man actually disobeys; if he were not to disobey he would not be a sinner.” This thesis was thus motivated to critique Sanders’s contention in relation to sin and human accountability in Second Temple Judaism. Before delving into various understandings of sin and human accountability of Second Temple Judaism, in Chapter 2, I deal with the Weltanschauung of Second Temple Judaism. It was observed that Israel’s covenantal history is far from discontinuous with creation at a time of severe theological, sociological, and political plights in spite of the presence of sin and evil. In Chapters 3, I deal with how the authors of 1 Enoch and Jubilees understood the presence of sin and evil. Even though the Watcher story in these Enochic traditions serves to attribute the origin of sin to the fallen angels, it was observed the Watcher story cannot quench Second Temple Jews’ uneasiness in relation to the presence of sin and evil. In Chapter 4, I deal with Qumran literature. By focusing on the term yetzer ra both in pre-Qumran and in Qumran writings, it is worth noting that Qumran literature shows a tendency to realize the severity of the sinfulness of humanity in a complicated and radicalized manner. When looking at first century Jewish (4 Ezra and 2 Baruch) and early Christian (Romans and James) literature in Chapter 5, it was observed that the authors of 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch came to develop further pessimistic anthropologies distinct from their predecessors in the Second Temple period. However, for them, a possibility is open for the few righteous remnants to obey divine commandments. It can be said that their understandings of sin and human accountability appear to be synergistic. Previous issue date: 2012-12-13<br>This paper seeks to present the experiences of three listeners, besides the author, childrens of deaf parents, discussing family relationships between parents and children, showing the differences in relation to families who have no deaf people at its core, demystifying prejudices and pre -concepts. Due to communication barriers and prejudice, many deaf people ended up being deprived of the right to be parents. In the reports presented in this thesis, there were times when it almost happened in the lives of the subjects interviewed for this research, but with strength and awareness of rights they had, these deaf parents would not allow such a thing to happen. The text begins with the history and formation of the author to then bring the authors covering topics such as deafness (Wrigley, 1996; Lacerda, 1998; Perlin, 1998; Moura, 2000; Sá, 2002; Quadros, 2004; Sacks, 2007), anthropology (Hall, 1992; Gomes, 2008), family relationships (Lacan, 1987) and autobiography (Ferraroti, 1991; Pineau, 2006; Demartini, 2008). The sign language of the deaf and educational history are also discussed in this paper. At the end are presented reports of life history made in the research field of literary form, with analyzes of testimonies collected by interviewees (deaf parents and hearing children) which showed to be son of deaf parents can be as normal as being the child of hearing parents.<br>Este trabalho busca apresentar as vivências de três pessoas ouvintes, além do próprio autor, filhas de pais surdos, discutindo as relações familiares entre pais e filhos, mostrando as diferenças em relação às famílias que não possuem pessoas surdas no seu âmago, desmistificando preconceitos e pré-conceitos. Devido as barreiras comunicacionais e pelo preconceito, muitos surdos acabavam sendo privados do direto de serem pais. Nos relatos apresentados nesta dissertação, houve momentos em que isso quase aconteceu na vida dos sujeitos entrevistados para esta pesquisa. Porém, com força e consciência dos direitos adquiridos, esses pais surdos não permitiram que tal coisa acontecesse. O texto inicia com a trajetória formativa e profissional do autor para, em seguida, trazer os autores que abordam temas como surdez (Wrigley, 1996; Lacerda, 1998; Perlin, 1998; Moura, 2000; Sá, 2002; Quadros, 2004; Sacks, 2007), antropologia (Hall, 1992; Gomes, 2008), relações familiares (Lacan, 1987) e autobiografia (Ferraroti, 1991; Pineau, 2006; demartini, 2008). A língua de sinais e a história educacional dos surdos também são discutidas neste trabalho. Cette thèse analyse la manière dont Ibn ‘Atâ’ Allâh al-Iskandarî aborde, dans son œuvre, la notion du péché, mettant en exergue son aspect positif, voire salvateur, à la lumière des apports d’auteurs soufis précédents qui ont marqué sa formation spirituelle. Après un état des lieux de la situation de l’Égypte au début du règne mamelouk, ce travail tente de dessiner le portrait d’Ibn ‘Atâ Allâh en s’interrogeant sur des dimensions moins connues de sa personnalité et en démontrant l’importance de son œuvre dans la transmission de l’enseignement reçu oralement de ses maîtres, fondateurs de la Shâdhiliyya. After an overview of the situation in Egypt in the early Mamluk era, this work tries to draw the portrait of Ibn 'Ata Allah by treating some less known dimensions of his personality and demonstrating the importance of his works in transmitting the spiritual teaching he received orally from his masters, the founders of the Shâdhiliyya. Concerning the concept of sin, it is first analyzed through a lexicographical study, before retracing the ways in which it was addressed by Muhâsibî, Makkî Qushayrî, Ghazâlî and Ibn 'Arabî. Dans ce rapport de mémoire, nous avons utilisé les méthodes numériques telles que la dynamique moléculaire (code de Lammps) et ART-cinétique. Ce dernier est un algorithme de Monte Carlo cinétique hors réseau avec construction du catalogue d'événements à la volée qui incorpore exactement tous les effets élastiques.
Dans la première partie, nous avons comparé et évalué des divers algorithmes de la recherche du minimum global sur une surface d'énergie potentielle des matériaux complexes. Ces divers algorithmes choisis sont essentiellement ceux qui utilisent le principe Bell-Evans-Polanyi pour explorer la surface d'énergie potentielle. Cette étude nous a permis de comprendre d'une part, les étapes nécessaires pour un matériau complexe d'échapper d'un minimum local vers un autre et d'autre part de contrôler les recherches pour vite trouver le minimum global. En plus, ces travaux nous ont amené à comprendre la force de ces méthodes sur la cinétique de l'évolution structurale de ces matériaux complexes.
Dans la deuxième partie, nous avons mis en place un outil de simulation (le potentiel ReaxFF couplé avec ART-cinétique) capable d'étudier les étapes et les processus d'oxydation du silicium pendant des temps long comparable expérimentalement. Pour valider le système mis en place, nous avons effectué des tests sur les premières étapes d'oxydation du silicium. Les résultats obtenus sont en accord avec la littérature. Cet outil va être utilisé pour comprendre les vrais processus de l'oxydation et les transitions possibles des atomes d'oxygène à la surface du silicium associée avec les énergies de barrière, des questions qui sont des défis pour l'industrie micro-électronique.<br>In this Master's thesis, we use the numerical methods such as molecular dynamics (LAMMPS's code) and kinetic-ART which is an on-the-fly off-lattice kinetic Monte Carlo algorithm that incorporates exactly all elastic effects.
In the first, we compare a number of various algorithms used for sampling energy landscape of complex materials. The various algorithms chosen are those that use the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle to progress on the potential energy surface.This study allowed us to understand the steps needed to escape a local minimum to another and to control research to quickly find the global minimum. This study also allowed us to understand the power of these methods on the kinetics of the structural evolution of complex materials.
In the second part, we have developed a simulation tool (ReaxFF potential coupled with Kinetics-ART) able to study the first stages and oxidation process of silicon compare to the experimental time. To validate the system in place, we have tested the very first step of the silicon oxidation. The results obtained are in agreement with the literature. This tool will be used to understand the true oxidation process, the possible transitions of oxygen atoms at the silicon surface and the barrier associated with. Problem that are real challenges for the microelectronics industry.

The subject of Canada’s policy-making in relation to the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) has been neglected for over half a century. Therefore neither the scope of Canada’s official assistance to the Chinese during their War of Resistance against Japan nor the motivations behind this assistance have been fully explained or adequately contextualized. Through research using archival records and other primary and secondary sources, the thesis sheds light on the ways in which Canadians chose to respond to Chinese efforts to secure an ally against Japan. Revealing unscrupulous opportunism on the Canadian side during China’s struggle against Japan, the thesis contributes to a revisionist trend which takes aim at romantic mythology about Canadians’ virtuous role in the Second World War.
From 1931 to 1941, the Government of Canada sought to maintain a neutral position regarding Japanese encroachments in China. This was partly to honour a friendship established in the First World War but also to protect Canadian exporters’ valuable sales of strategic minerals to Japan. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, pro-Japanese sympathy among Canadians eroded and trade with Japan became politically untenable. In 1942, already five years after the beginning of full-scale war between Japan and China, the Canadian government began preparations to provide material assistance to the beleaguered Chinese. Increasing dialogue between Mackenzie King and Chiang Kai-shek, especially communications through Chiang’s wife Song Meiling, nurtured a promising friendship despite King’s unwillingness to commit “the lives of white men” to war in China and apparently ensured that several shipments of arms and munitions were provided to Chiang’s armies. As the research reveals, the assistance was motivated by hopes of cultivating “goodwill” in China that would favour Canadian businesses after the war. However, the official decision to assist China against Japan sparked a new controversy. Doubts about China’s postwar political stability gave rise to questions about the danger that Canadian munitions would be used in an imminent Chinese civil war. Such warnings, as it turned out, were merited. abstract: Sacred apocalyptic texts claim to foretell coming events, warning the faithful of some terrible fate that lies beyond the present. Such texts often derive their power from successfully recasting past events in such a way as they appear to be "predicted" by the text and thus take on additional meanings beyond the superficial. This ex eventu status allows apocalyptic texts to increase the credibility of their future predictions and connect emotionally with the reader by playing on present fears. The fifth-century Daoist apocalyptic text, the Scripture on the Cycles of Heaven and Earth (Tiandi yundu jing, 天地運度經), is no exception. abstract: In 1072 Jōjin (1011-1081) boarded a Chinese merchant ship docked in Kabeshima (modern Saga) headed for Mingzhou (modern Ningbo) on the eastern coast of Northern Song (960-1279) China. Following the convention of his predecessors, Jōjin kept a daily record of his travels from the time he first boarded the Chinese merchant ship in Kabeshima to the day he sent his diary back to Japan with his disciples in 1073.
Jōjin’s diary in eight fascicles, A Record of a Pilgrimage to Tiantai and Wutai Mountains (San Tendai Godaisan ki), is one of the longest extant travel accounts concerning medieval China. It includes a detailed compendium of anecdotes on material culture, flora and fauna, water travel, and bureaucratic procedures during the Northern Song, as well as the transcription of official documents, inscriptions, Chinese texts, and lists of personal purchases and official procurements. The encyclopedic nature of Jōjin’s diary is highly valued for the insight it provides into the daily life, court policies, and religious institutions of eleventh-century China. This dissertation addresses these aspects of the diary, but does so from the perspective of treating the written text as a material artifact of placemaking.
The introductory chapter first contextualizes Jōjin’s diary within the travel writing genre, and then presents the theoretical framework for approaching Jōjin’s engagement with space and place. Chapter two presents the bustling urban life in Hangzhou in terms of Jōjin’s visual and material consumption of the secular realm as reflected in his highly illustrative descriptions of the night markets and entertainers. Chapter three examines Jōjin’s descriptions of sacred Tendai sites in China, and how he approaches these spaces with a sense of familiarity from the textual milieu that informed his movements across this religious landscape. Chapter four discusses Jōjin’s impressions of Kaifeng and the Grand Interior as a metropolitan space with dynamic functions and meanings. place aussi significative qu’à Socrate : nous apprenons tout naturellement à l’édifier
comme héros de la rationalité et à reconnaître en lui la figure même du philosophe
critique. À plusieurs égards, cette représentation élogieuse nous paraît justifiée, bien
que, d’un autre point de vue, elle puisse nous faire sombrer dans la confusion, dès
lors que notre regard porte simultanément, et comme pour produire un contraste, sur
l’image d’un Socrate se soumettant au daimonion, son étrange signe divin. Comment
pouvons-nous justifier, à partir du corpus platonicien, à la fois l’engagement de
Socrate vis-à-vis de la rationalité et sa soumission à un phénomène en apparence

De cette question troublante est née la présente étude qui se consacre donc au
problème de l’articulation entre le rapport de Socrate aux dieux et son rapport à la
raison critique. Plus précisément, nous avons cherché à déterminer s’il existait, sur le
plan épistémologique, une hiérarchie entre le daimonion et la méthode
d’investigation rationnelle propre à Socrate, l’elenchos. Une telle étude exégétique
nécessitait, dans un premier temps, une analyse systématique et approfondie des
quelques passages sur le signe divin. Nous avons ensuite exposé deux solutions
paradigmatiques au problème du double engagement contradictoire de Socrate, celle
de G. Vlastos ainsi que celle de T.C. Brickhouse et N.D. Smith. Enfin, nous avons
augmenté cette seconde partie d’un examen spécifique du Phèdre et du Timée, de
même que d’un survol des modes de divination pour satisfaire un triple objectif :
situer le signe divin en regard de la mantique traditionnelle, déterminer le rôle
attribué par Platon à la raison dans le processus divinatoire, et être ainsi en mesure de
trancher notre question principale.<br>To very few philosophers the history of the Western thought granted a place
as significant as to Socrates: we quite naturally learn how to identify him as a hero of
rationality and to recognize in him the very figure of the critical philosopher. In
several respects, this representation of praise appears justified to us, although, from
another point of view, it can make us sink in confusion, since our glance carries
simultaneously, and like producing a contrast, on the image of Socrates obeying to
the daimonion, his uncanny divine sign. How can we justify, starting from the
Platonic corpus, both the engagement of Socrates with respect to rationality and his
subordination to a seemingly irrational phenomenon?
From this disconcerting question was born the present study which is thus
devoted to the problem of the articulation between the relation of Socrates to the
gods and his relation to the critical reason. More precisely, we sought to determine if
there existed, on the epistemological level, a hierarchy between the daimonion and
the method of rational investigation peculiar to Socrates, the elenchos. Such an
exegetic study required, initially, a systematic and thorough analysis of the few
passages related to the divine sign. We then adduced two paradigmatic solutions, that
of G. Vlastos as well as that of T.C. Brickhouse and N.D. Smith. Lastly, we added to
this second part besides a specific examination of Phaedrus and Timaeus, also a
broad survey of the modes of divination, satisfying a triple aim: to make sense of the
divine sign in comparison with the traditional art of mantic, to determine the role
allotted by Plato to the reason in the divinatory process, and thus to be able to solve
our principal question.

A parábola do “pai misericordioso” (Lc 15,11-32), o coração do terceiro Evangelho,
diz-nos muito acerca de Jesus, da Sua mensagem e dos seus interlocutores. O texto transporta
consigo uma história única e irrepetível, com uma originalidade que fala por si. Antes de tirar
conclusões, importa perceber o seu sitz-im-leben, de modo a compreender a sua origem e
mensagem central.
A análise e os aspetos sócio religiosos do texto, enquadrado na globalidade do
Evangelho de Lucas, constituem as premissas para a focalização das suas personagens, nas
motivações, nos traços e nas atitudes que as caraterizam.
A misericórdia é o principal filamento que atravessa este texto, ainda que apenas se
encontre nas ações da personagem principal, o pai. Além disso, é a caraterística principal de
quem contou a parábola, Jesus. Os dois filhos tipificam os seus interlocutores: fariseus e
doutores da Lei (filho mais velho); pecadores e publicanos (filho mais novo).
No entanto, a parábola não se restringe ao exercício da misericórdia, mas tem em vista
a salvação, preconizada no banquete final.<br>ἦhe paraἴle of the “merἵiful father” (δuke 1ημ11-32), being the core of the third gospel,
tells us a great deal about Jesus, His message and interlocutors. The texts contains a unique and
unrepeatable story with remarkable originality. Before drawing any conclusions, it is important
to understand the sitz-im-leben of the text in order to comprehend its origin and central message.
The text analysis and the social and religious aspects therein are taken in relation with
the whole of the gospel of Luke, as the premises for focusing the characters in their respective
motivations, features and distinctive behavior.
Mercy is the main thread running through this text, despite being present only in the
actions of the main character, the father. Moreover, mercy is the chief characteristic of the man
telling the parable, Jesus. The two sons typify His interlocutors: the Pharisees and the Doctors
of the Law (typified by the older son) and the sinners and the publicans (typified by the younger
son).
Nevertheless, the parable is not restricted to the exercise of mercy, instead it points to
salvation, as announced in the final banquet.
