A cascaded-like high-step-down converter (CHSDC) is proposed in this article, which can steeply convert a high voltage to a much lower level without the utilizing of extreme turns ratio or duty ratio. The proposed converter integrates two buck-boost converters and one forward converter to form a single-stage architecture containing only a single low-side driving switch, which, as a result, can lower the cost and reduce the complexity of the associated control driver. Even in a single-stage single-switch structure, the ability to step down input voltage is as effective as the cascade of two buck-boosts and one forward converter. Meanwhile, the proposed converter can avoid the low efficiency caused by a cascaded structure. Without an additional clamp circuit, the leakage energy stored in the transformer of the CHSDC can be still recycled so as to raise the efficiency of the converter and suppress voltage spikes at the power switch. Converter operation principle and key parameter design are discussed. Moreover, a 200 W prototype is built and then tested to validate the proposed converter and verify the theoretical analysis.

A new boost converter without an inductor is proposed for a small-scale wind power generator system. Experiments were carried out to compare the output powers and power conversion efficiencies for the converter without an inductor and the one with an inductor. Experimental results for the converters operated at both constant resistance mode and constant voltage mode were given. It was found that efficiencies for the converter without an inductor and for the one with an inductor are essentially the same. The cost may be reduced since the inductor is not needed in the proposed boost converter without an inductor.

This article presents a nonbridged isolated positive Cuk (NB-IPCuk) converter-based single-stage battery charging system (SSBCS). The architecture of the suggested charger ensures the intrinsic advantage of power quality improvement in discontinuous current conduction (DCC) mode at the supply mains. The suggested NB-IPCuk converter scheme has fewer components than other bridgeless/nonbridged Cuk converter schemes. This is because the NB-IPCuk converter is a partial integration of two Cuk converters. The usage of the Cuk converter garnishes the system with input and output inductances, which lessens supply current harmonic distortion and, thus supply terminal low pass filter requirement is eradicated. The advantages of the NB-IPCuk converter are the eradication of one inductor and multiple diodes (two back-feeding diodes), which are generally used in NB converter configurations. In place of two separate inductors, the NB-IPCuk converter uses a single secondary side output inductor. The usage of BL configuration of NB-IPCuk converter eradicates the bridge rectifier (BR) stage, and thus, the BR-associated losses also got eradicated. The NB-IPCuk converter also garnishes the system with electrical isolation which adds to the safety standards of the system. DCC mode operation of the NB-IPCuk converter is used in the present work. DCC mode requires lesser sensors in comparison to continuous current conduction mode. The abovementioned benefits of the NB-IPCuk converter make the SSBCS system cheaper, compact, and more efficient. The detailed stability analysis (Bode diagram and pole-zero map) and mathematics for the NB-IPCuk converter are also included in the paper. The prototype and MATLAB/Simulink model of NB-IPCuk converter-based SSBCS system with DCC mode control has been built, and results of both prototype and MATLAB/Simulink are deployed to verify SSBCS system’s performance during dynamic and steady-state conditions.

A single-stage DC uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is proposed in this paper. Basically, the proposed converter is an integration result of a power factor correction circuit with a dc-to-dc converter to achieve simple hardware circuit, high efficiency, and low cost for extra UPS function. Under normal operation, a novel two-switch SEPIC converter operates as an ac to dc converter with sinusoidal input current, unity power factor, and low ripple dc output voltage, and as a battery charger if a battery is added. Since both the input boost supply and the output supply can be controlled independently, a fast transient response can be maintained at both the input for active current wave shaping and at the output for good output regulation. When the ac source is in an outage condition, the proposed converter functions as a dc-to-dc buck-boost converter; therefore, the desired dc output voltage can be provided. Finally, some experimental results are presented for verification.

The traditional DC-link indirect AC/AC power converters (AC/DC/AC converters) employ two-stage power conversion, which increases the circuit complexity along with gate driving challenges, placing an excessive burden on the processor while implementing complex switching modulation techniques and leads to power conversion losses due to the use of a large amount of controlled power semiconductor switches. On the contrary, the traditional direct AC/AC voltage controllers, as well as frequency changers, suffer from high total harmonic distortion (THD) problems. In this paper, a new single-phase to three-phase AC/AC step-down power converter is proposed, which utilizes a multi-linking transformer and bilateral triode thyristors (TRIACs) as power semiconductor switches. The proposed direct AC/AC power converter employs single-stage power conversion, which mitigates the complexity of two-stage DC-link indirect AC/AC converters and traditional single-stage AC/AC frequency changers. Instead of using high-frequency pulse width modulated gate driving signals, line frequency gate pulses are used to trigger the TRIACs of the proposed AC/AC converter, which not only aids in reducing the power loss of the converter but also mitigates the cost and complexity of gate driver circuits. The proposed AC/AC converter reduces the THD of the output voltage significantly as compared to traditional direct AC/AC frequency changers. The performance of the proposed AC/AC converter is validated against RL and induction motor load in terms of overall THD and individual harmonic components through MATLAB/Simulink environment. A reduced-scale laboratory prototype is built and tested to evaluate the performance of the proposed AC/AC power converter. The experimental and simulation outcomes reveal the feasibility and excellent features of the proposed single-phase to three-phase AC/AC converter topology.

Most traditional AC/AC power converters suffer from power quality problems and multi-stage power conversion losses. The rectifier and inverter-based AC/AC converter topology not only increases multi-stage power conversion losses, but also increases the volume, weight, and cost, and decreases the longevity of the converter due to the DC-link capacitor, line filter and electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter. High-frequency (about 10 kHz) switching advanced pulse width modulation techniques are generally used in order to compensate the power quality problems, which increase the switching losses and introduce the EMI problems. In this paper, a new generalized step-down single-stage line-frequency switching AC/AC power converter topology is proposed. The proposed converter uses line-frequency switching, and does not require any pulse width modulation techniques. The proposed topology offers promising performances in terms of lower order harmonics, total harmonic distortion, the elimination of DC-link capacitors and EMI filters, and switching losses. The circuit was designed and simulated in a MATLAB/Simulink environment. A scaled-down laboratory prototype of the proposed topology was developed in order to validate the feasibility. The experimental and simulation results reveal the feasibility of the proposed generalized step-down single-stage converter topology, and its excellent features.

Single stage isolated AC to DC converters find prominence due to simplicity and efficiency in addition to economics. Boundary control Mode BCM Flyback converters are widely used for such applications up to power levels of 200 watts. For higher power levels, average current control mode PFCs are used and two stage conversion is incorporated. In this paper, a novel technique for building a single stage PFC with a Continuous Conduction Mode CCM Flyback AC DC converter is proposed for 500 watts power. A practicalsingle stage converter is built with power factor correction and input output isolation. The unique feature of the new configuration lies in having only one primary MOSFET switch and adapting BCM control in a CCM Flyback configuration and achieving ZVS and ZCS while in CCM operation. Proposed configuration is best suited for battery charger applications. Also, the absence of high voltage bulk capacitor at the mains input adds lot of advantages in terms of eliminating inrush current and saving PCB area. A working model of 130 V Dc output and 4.0A is built and the test data are presented depicting the complete soft switching of all power devices and exhibiting the efficiencies in excess of 95%.

A matrix-integrated single-stage isolated MF/HF AC-AC/DC-AC/AC-DC converter topology stands out as an innovative concept, offering a multitude of advantages including minimal output current THDs, near UPF, 4Q operation, smooth BPF capability, and increased power density leading to the converter’s enhanced efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. These characteristics render it an exemplary choice for RE-based power conversion applications. In fact, the matrix-integrated single-stage isolated MF/HF converters have witnessed an increased adoption of RE-based grid interconnection in recent years, specifically within solar PV, WECS, grid-tied offshore WF, and FC-based applications. RE sources produce variable and intermittent AC power by nature, further necessitating conversion to a stable and grid-compatible AC voltage and frequency. This is where MCs offer distinct advantages when contrasted with the conventional indirect dual-stage VSC-based rectifier–inverter topology. In this paper, a total of 22 matrix-integrated HF isolated converter topologies are broadly explored. Our study provides a comprehensive analysis and classification of matrix-integrated isolated single-stage MF/HF AC-AC converters, DC-AC inverters, and AC-DC rectifier topologies including modified topology architectures, control method, modulation techniques along with significant applications. Within this scope, the matrix-integrated converter topologies are categorized based on their architectures and other relevant subvariants. Our primary objective of this study is to impart a clear understanding of the overarching framework and principles of the matrix-integrated single-stage isolated MF/HF converter topologies and stimulate the creation of new topologies that cater to specific requirements for grid-interconnected systems.

Power factor correction (PFC) converters have been frequently employed in various switching power supply devices to reduce input current harmonics. However, the PFC converter suffers from an obvious twice-line-frequency output voltage ripple due to the instantaneous power imbalance between constant output power and variable input power. Suppression of twice-line-frequency ripple usually can be realized by the post-stage DC-DC converter of the two-stage cascade PFC converter; however, the two-stage cascade PFC structure is challenging to realize high efficiency since the energy is transferred twice. To achieve high power factor, high efficiency, and low twice-line-frequency ripple, a hybrid quasi-single-stage (QSS) AC-DC converter is presented in this paper, which consists of a dual output hybrid Boost/Flyback PFC converter and a Buck ripple compensation circuit (RCC). The fundamental principles of the proposed converter and the critical conditions of operation mode transition are discussed in the paper. To confirm that the twice-line-frequency ripple is effectively suppressed, the small signal model of Buck RCC is built and analyzed. Moreover, the main characteristics, including operation mode transition angle, input current, power factor, and switching frequency of the proposed hybrid QSS AC-DC converter, are analyzed. By building a 120 W experimental prototype to validate the feasibility of the proposed hybrid QSS AC-DC converter, the experimental results show that the proposed converter can realize PFC function with high efficiency and extremely low twice-line-frequency output voltage ripple.

The single-stage dual active bridge (DAB) AC-DC converter has the advantages of high power density, low cost, and simple control; it has a broad potential for application in the field of onboard chargers (OBC). However, the lack of fast and accurate quantitative parameter optimization design methods in single-stage DAB AC-DC converters limits the overall efficiency of the converter. Based on the above problem, in order to improve the overall operating efficiency of the converter by optimizing the parameter transformer ratio and power inductance, this paper proposes a parameter design method considering a multi-timescale strategy by combining the steady-state analysis model of the converter in the line cycle and switching cycle and step-by-step reducing its design space through the constraints on the parameters. The first step is to obtain a safe design space for the parameters under the converter’s transmitted power and current stress constraints. The second step obtains the optimization design space of the parameters under the optimization of conduction loss and switching loss of the converter. Finally, the optimal parameters are determined by the loss analysis model. The proposed parameter optimization method entirely takes into account the steady-state characteristics of the DAB AC-DC converter during the line cycle, and the step-by-step constraints greatly accelerate the parameter design process. In addition, the proposed parameter optimization design method applies to all types of single-stage DAB AC-DC converters, which can be well applied to engineering practice.

In order to improve the power factor and reduce the input current harmonics, power factor correction (PFC) converters are utilized. This paper introduces a single-stage continuous conduction mode (CCM) soft-switched power factor correction (PFC) converter with a tandem topology. The proposed topology has two operating modes, namely resonant operation mode and boost operation mode. Such a design and control realizes the zero-voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS) of the power switches. The proposed topology has been introduced to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the input current further in the boost PFC converter under lower power and higher output voltage conditions. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the performance of the proposed design and its control.

In the last three decades, the energy conversion market has been dominated by switching power converters due to reduction of size and cost of electronic components. This market includes four types of conversion: DC–DC, DC–AC, AC–DC, and AC–AC. While the first three types are applied directly in a single conversion, the AC–AC converter is comprised of two serial converters leading to an AC–DC–AC conversion. This article introduces, for the first time, a real direct single-stage AC–AC conversion electronic transformer. The single stage AC–AC converter is fabricated using a unique high efficiency topology, combined with the advantages of dual-stage power-quality protection. This single-stage AC–AC regulated electronic transformer is stabilized, controlled, protected, and can lock onto any line voltage (110 or 220 V) with a frequency of 45–65 Hz. Stabilization is achieved by fast pulse-width modulation technology, applied by two-way fast solid-state switches. The transformer is controlled by a 150 MHz digital signal processor and is fully protected against overcurrent and output short circuits. Our first stage transformer is a single-phase device with 5 kW power with an efficiency of better than 97% with one-tenth of the weight and volume of present conventional electromechanical transformers.

Abstract This paper presents an improved power quality converter (IPQC)-based power supply design for high brightness light emitting diode (HB-LED) low power lighting. The IPQC circuit uses a Cuk buck-boost converter to operate it in a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) using the voltage follower technique for the mitigation of harmonic contents present in the AC mains current. Subsequently, reduction in harmonic contents results in improving the power quality indices at the AC mains. Single-stage single switch converter topology is used, which has less component count, size and cost as compared to the two-stage converter topology. DCM operation has an advantage that only output voltage control loop is required as compared to three control loops required in the continuous conduction mode operation. An 18-W LED driver is designed, modeled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software for 220 V, 50 Hz AC mains. The performance of the proposed LED driver is observed in terms of total harmonic distortion of the input current (THDi), input power factor (PF) and crest factor (CF) taking into account the strict international standard of IEC 61000-3-2 for class C equipments.

To reduce the intermediate storage capacitor voltage stress in single-stage power-factor-corrected (S2PFC) converters due to the change of load, some effective approaches such as variable frequency control and negative bus voltage feedback have been proposed. However, this intermediate capacitor voltage still varies largely against the change of line voltage. This paper proposes a S2PFC converter which is constructed in a way such that the amount of energy to and from the intermediate storage capacitor can be varied when the line voltage is changed, hence narrowed the range of intermediate capacitor voltage fluctuation. This is achieved by an auxiliary bidirectional switch, which operates at zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) condition. A dual-loop voltage mode control is proposed for the converter to achieve power factor correction, output voltage regulation, and intermediate capacitor voltage control simultaneously. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective.

This paper details the design and implementation of a single-stage transformerless buck–boost inverter for electric vehicle (EV) chargers. Being different from conventional H-bridge inverters, the proposed inverter operates like buck–boost dc/dc converters instead of buck dc/dc converters. As a consequence, the advantages of a buck–boost dc/dc converter, i.e., the arbitrary relationships between its input voltage and output voltage, are still applicable to the proposed inverter. Specifically, it remains in normal operation even when the peak ac output voltage is higher than the dc-link voltage. Simulation results are finally presented to illustrate its effectiveness.

Charge storage is an important research topic in smart grid and distributed generation system, pumped storage as one of the most popular large-scale charge storage methods has attracted increasing attention. However, the motor generator of the pumped charge station has high input voltage and heavy load, so in order to get grid connected safely, being soft started by a high voltage converter is necessary. In the view of the existing high voltage high power converters, only the voltage source inverter Multi-stage Series-connection high voltage frequency converters are suitable for this application, and this paper gives analysis of such converters. Based on Carrier Wave Phase-Shifted modulation, this paper proposes a multi-stage Series-connection high voltage frequency converter with balanced output power of the step-down transformer’s secondary windings, in which a winding burdens three symmetry three-phase to single-phase MC outputs, and the same phase outputs of the MC are cascaded at the secondary side of the transformers, letting out one phase of high-voltage AC output. The circuit is consisted of a step-down industry frequency transformer at the network side, three-phase to single-phase MC arrays, a step-up high frequency transformer at the load side and filter components. The simulation result based on MATLAB/SIMULINK shows that the proposed multi-stage Series-connection high voltage frequency converter is feasible and low-cost.
