This paper presents a proposal of a complex mechatronic system that enhances the effectivity of obtaining energy from renewable resources. The main focus is on the photovoltaic energy system, which obtains electricity from the conversion of solar radiation through photovoltaic crystalline silicon-based panels. The design of the complex mechatronic system consists of several steps. The structural design of the photovoltaic panel positioning unit in the form of a three-dimensional model is made in the selected modelling programming environment. Subsequently, a propulsion system is proposed for the designed structure, the functionality of which is verified in the programming environment Automated Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems. The control system design using a programmable logical controller is also presented. The corresponding control algorithm is designed in the programming environment Step7 and covers the optimal positioning of photovoltaic panels. The developed application in the WinCC environment provides a visualization of the positioning control process. The conclusion is devoted to the assessment of the obtained results for the proposed complex mechatronic system for photovoltaic panel positioning in comparison with photovoltaic panels in fixed installation. The presented results were obtained by simulations.

Abstract Modern manufacturing systems consist of a sequence of robotic systems, such as robotic cells, which are widely used in the industry. As they become commonplace and play important roles in modern industrial production, efficient modelling and use of robotic cells become a necessity. Robotization brings many measurable benefits. It enables effective utilization of both human resources and the possessed machine park and thus contributing to the improvement of product quality and efficiency. Industrial robots not only increase the growth of productivity, by replacing man in monotonous works, requiring enormous, not achievable for human precision but above all ensure the accuracy and repeatability of the product quality. Appropriate design and modelling of robotic manufacturing systems are crucial in the efficient integration of work cell components and proper maintenance of robotic production systems. Therefore, new solutions for programming environments in industrial applications are sought which not only allow reprogramming of industrial robots but also enable the virtual design of new production lines, which in turn allows the faster introduction of higher quality products. This article presents the modelling and programming of robotic work cells in the Siemens Process Simulate environment.

The new approach to the problems of dynamic systems simulation is proposed. The analytical and imitation modelling of non‐linear complex dynamic systems which comprise simulation of continuous and discrete processes with constant and variable parameters, are investigated. The aggregate mathematical modelling scheme [1] and the method of control sequences for discrete systems specification and simulation are used as well as the dynamic mathematical modelling scheme for continuous process formalization and modelling. According to them the investigated systems are presented as the set of interacting piecewise linear aggregates, which can include processes described with differential equations. The above mentioned approach is used in developing software for the construction and research of the models. The modelling of the dynamic systems’ control is also analyzed and developed software for the dynamic systems’ simulation is presented. It is related to the proposed combined modelling methodology. The developed dynamical simulation system ADPRO (Automatic Differentiation PROgram) extends applicability of the system SIMAS (SIMulation of the Aggregate Systems) [2] with dynamical simulation means realized with APL2 (A Programming Language 2) and based on automatic differentiation [3]. The created model of service process and its control can be used as a base for other models of wide class complex dynamics’ systems [4], the parts of which are described with differential equations.

Background Several new programming languages and technologies have emerged in the past few decades in order to ease the task of modelling complex systems. Modelling the dynamics of complex systems requires various levels of abstractions and reductive measures in representing the underlying behaviour. This also often requires making a trade-off between how realistic a model should be in order to address the scientific questions of interest and the computational tractability of the model. Methods In this paper, we propose a novel programming paradigm, called temporal constrained objects, which facilitates a principled approach to modelling complex dynamical systems. Temporal constrained objects are an extension of constrained objects with a focus on the analysis and prediction of the dynamic behaviour of a system. The structural aspects of a neuronal system are represented using objects, as in object-oriented languages, while the dynamic behaviour of neurons and synapses are modelled using declarative temporal constraints. Computation in this paradigm is a process of constraint satisfaction within a time-based simulation. Results We identified the feasibility and practicality in automatically mapping different kinds of neuron and synapse models to the constraints of temporal constrained objects. Simple neuronal networks were modelled by composing circuit components, implicitly satisfying the internal constraints of each component and interface constraints of the composition. Simulations show that temporal constrained objects provide significant conciseness in the formulation of these models. The underlying computational engine employed here automatically finds the solutions to the problems stated, reducing the code for modelling and simulation control. All examples reported in this paper have been programmed and successfully tested using the prototype language called TCOB. The code along with the programming environment are available at http://github.com/compneuro/TCOB_Neuron. Discussion Temporal constrained objects provide powerful capabilities for modelling the structural and dynamic aspects of neural systems. Capabilities of the constraint programming paradigm, such as declarative specification, the ability to express partial information and non-directionality, and capabilities of the object-oriented paradigm especially aggregation and inheritance, make this paradigm the right candidate for complex systems and computational modelling studies. With the advent of multi-core parallel computer architectures and techniques or parallel constraint-solving, the paradigm of temporal constrained objects lends itself to highly efficient execution which is necessary for modelling and simulation of large brain circuits.

In this paper we interpret chaos synchronization schemes within the framework of Lagrange programming networks, which form a class of continuous-time optimization methods for solving constrained nonlinear optimization problems. From this study it follows that standard synchronization schemes can be regarded as a Lagrange programming network with soft constraining, where synchronization between state vectors is defined as a constraint to the dynamical systems. New schemes are proposed then which implement synchronization by hard and soft constraints within Lagrange programming networks. A version is derived which takes into account synchronization errors within the problem formulation. Furthermore Lagrange programming networks for achieving partial and generalized synchronization are given. The methods assume the existence of potential functions for the given systems. The proposed Lagrange programming networks with hard and soft constraining show improved performance on many simulation examples for identical and nonidentical chaotic systems. The schemes are illustrated on Chua's circuit, Lorenz attractor and n-scroll circuits.

This paper outlines a set of requirements for programmers considering the development of decision support systems using semantic web technology. Current strategies across the research community are surveyed that deploy semantic web applications. From the discussion of these strategies, ten basic requirements are derived. Dynamic simulation modelling (DSM) is a computer modelling technique that promotes description of complex natural systems, such as watersheds and BMP systems. When DSM is accomplished in an object oriented programming framework, modelling is highly interactive. The Field Phosphorus Model (FPM) was created with STELLA® II, an object oriented DSM programming environment FPM is based on sophisticated accounting of all annual inputs and outputs of phosphorus for a farm field and simulates, on a yearly basis, patterns of phosphorus export from farm fields used for manure management on dairy farms. Model inputs include atmospheric deposition, manure application and chemical fertilizer; outputs include surface runoff, crop harvest, and movement into deeper soil layers. Using two BMP scenarios, the implications for long-term phosphorus export levels from the field to surface and ground waters are discussed. Changes in the land treatment or BMP levels on the field results in a lag time between when the BMP is implemented and when the full impact on phosphorus export is seen. The Field Phosphorus Model suggests that the simultaneous reduction of long-term phosphorus output to surface and ground waters is accomplished by implementation of BMP's that limit the input of phosphorus to the field.

The paper is dedicated to a topical scientific and applied problem – the development of information technology of computer modelling intended for programming the yield of agricultural crops. The paper describes information technology of computer modelling of the yield of agricultural crops (on the example of Avena sativa subsp. nudisativa), which is based on the application of Bayesian methods to modelling and prediction in conditions of statistical, parametric and structural uncertainty. The study was based on the materials of laboratory experiments carried out in conditions close to natural, on the prediction of physiological processes occurring in plants under the influence of regulated and unregulated factors. Proposed approach described the change in the productivity of grain crops, in particular Avena sativa subsp. nudisativa, depending on the parameters of plant growth and development, photosynthetic apparatus and duration of its functioning. Scientific novelty of the work was application of probabilistic and statistical models in the form of Bayesian networks in the system of programming the yield of agricultural crops. The paper considered several scenarios of the combined effect of growth regulators and herbicides on the productivity of Avena sativa subsp. nudisativa. Net productivity of photosynthesis was chosen as the target variable of the studied process. Mathematical models in the form of Bayesian network turned out to be adequate for the process chosen for modelling. Achieved error of model classification was about 20%. The model structure was built in Genie 2.0 modelling system. It was found that by researching and simulating potential opportunities of ecological features of plants, it was possible to achieve an increase in yield by reducing the doses of herbicides and growth regulators by their combined use, which significantly increased the crop quality. Proposed information technology uses methods of intelligent data analysis, has a modular structure and can be used separately and as part of other information and analytical systems.

Mathematical modelling is one of the fundamental tools of science and engineering. Very often, models are required to be executable, as a simulation, on a computer. In this paper, we present some contributions to the process-theoretic and logical foundations of discrete-event modelling with resources and processes. We present a process calculus with an explicit representation of resources in which processes and resources co-evolve. The calculus is closely connected to a logic that may be used as a specification language for properties of models. The logic is strong enough to allow requirements that a system has a certain structure: for example, that it is a parallel composite of subsystems. This work consolidates, extends and improves upon aspects of earlier work of ours in this area. An extended example, consisting of a semantics for a simple parallel programming language, indicates a connection with separating logics for concurrency.

Abstract A simulation model for in-servicetesting of software reliability assessment for railway automation systems is described in this paper. As a basic concept, the reliability indicators are calculated using the concept of a reference object, being the most common element of the respective train protection systems on the road network. We are aware that this concept is embedded in the subsystem for the formation of the reference object-element infrastructure of JSC “Russian Railways”, involving the function of bringing all track, electrification and power supply facilities as well as automation and telemechanics facilities to the reference objects. Nowadays, complex systems are dominating our contemporary as well as professional lives. These modern technical products are considered as mechatronic systems which incorporate mechanics with electronics, software, and control in various domains mainly transport, medicine, and robotics. The development of these modern technical products is thus so tough. Hence, mechatronics’ critical challenges are to be not only well understood but also supported by practical models and tools in order to overcome this difficulty. Moreover, using the traditional design method which is point based is inefficient as it leads to a huge decrease in the innovation potential through limiting the design space to few solutions, an important increase in the cost of the product as well as production delay due to the great number of iterations. Some product development practices have shifted from using the “fixed-point design” approach to the “set-based design” one. Indeed, the set-based concurrent engineering widely considers a set of possible solutions and then shrinks the number of possibilities in order to converge toward a final solution. Yet, since this approach is too difficult to be put into action, a small number of industries in the field of mechatronics use the set-based concurrent engineering concept. Accordingly, this work aims to develop a novel method for the purpose of facilitating the development of a complex product based on the set-based concurrent engineering method and its implementation in an industrial setting by developing an algorithm to find the set of possible solutions to the design problem and narrow this set to merge toward the final solution. Finally, this algorithm is implemented using “Python” language.

The simulation of HVAC systems is a powerful tool to improve the energy efficiency in buildings. The modelling of such systems faces several obstacles due to both the physical phenomenology present and the numerical resolution difficulties. The present work is an attempt to develop a robust, fast, and accurate model for HVAC systems that can interact with the other relevant systems involved in buildings thermal management. The whole system model has been developed in the form of libraries under the Modelica language to exploit its advantageous characteristics: object-oriented programming, equationbased modelling, and handling of multi-physics. The global resolution is carried out dynamically so that not only steady-state predictions can be conducted but also control strategies can be studied over meaningful periods of time. This latter aspect is crucial for optimizing energy savings. The libraries include models for all the system individual components such as pumps, compressors or heat exchangers (operating with twophase flows and/or moist air) and also models assemblies to account for vapour compression units and liquid circuits. An illustrative example of an indirect air conditioning system is detailed in the present work in order to highlight the model potential.

The mathematical model of the vibrating system is composed in a matrix form by the second order Lagrange equations. Numerical studies are realized in two ways. Firstly, in the Simulink environment, a simulation model was composed. Then, in the MATLAB environment, an animation model was developed using the third animation method offered by the programming system. The experimental studies were conducted by stand for study the small vibrations of discrete planar systems. The stand is part of the experimental equipment of the Lab for numerical and experimental dynamic modelling, UACEG, Sofia, Bulgaria. (www.dlab-uacg-bg.eu). All models - the dynamic model and its corresponding mathematical, simulation, animation and experimental model are open to additional bodies to obtain discrete vibrating systems with a larger number of degrees of freedom.

Abstract Motivation 3D physical modelling is a powerful computational technique that allows for the simulation of complex systems such as consortia of mixed bacterial species. The complexities in physical modelling reside in the knowledge intensive model building process and the computational expense in calculating their numerical solutions. These models can offer insights into microbiology, both in understanding natural systems and as design tools for developing novel synthetic bacterial systems. Developing a robust synthetic system typically requires multiple iterations around the specify→design→build→test cycle to meet specifications. This process is laborious and expensive for both the computational and laboratory aspects, hence any improvement in any of the workflow steps would be welcomed. We have previously introduced Simbiotics, a powerful and flexible platform for designing and analyzing 3D simulations of mixed species bacterial populations. Simbiotics requires programming experience to use which creates barriers to entry for use of the tool. Results In the spirit of enabling biologists who may not have programming skills to install and utilize Simbiotics, we present in this application note Easybiotics, a user-friendly graphical user interface for Simbiotics. Users may design, simulate and analyze models from within the graphical user interface, with features such as live graph plotting and parameter sweeps. Easybiotics provides full access to all of Simbiotics simulation features, such as cell growth, motility and gene regulation. Availability and implementation Easybiotics and Simbiotics are free to use under the GPL3.0 licence, and can be found at: http://ico2s.org/software/simbiotics.html. We also provide readily downloadable virtual machine sandboxes to facilitate rapid installation.

A simple interface between simulation programs and systems analytical software is proposed. This interface is designed to facilitate linkage of environmental simulation programs with systems analytical software and thus can contribute to remedying the deficiency in applying systems analytical techniques to environmental modelling studies. The proposed concept, consisting of a text file interface combined with a batch mode simulation program call, is independent of model structure, operating system and programming language. It is open for implementation by academic and commercial simulation and systems analytical software developers and is very simple to implement. Its practicability is demonstrated by implementations for three environmental simulation packages (AQUASIM, SWAT and LEACHM) and two systems analytical program packages (UNCSIM, SUFI). The properties listed above and the demonstration of the ease of implementation of the approach are prerequisites for the stimulation of a widespread implementation of the proposed interface that would be beneficial for the dissemination of systems analytical techniques in the environmental and engineering sciences. Furthermore, such a development could stimulate the transfer of systems analytical techniques between different fields of application.

Over the last few decades, the intelligent control methods such as fuzzy logic control (FLC) and neural network (NN) control have been successfully used in various applications. The rapid development of digital computer based control systems requires control signals to be calculated in a digital or discrete-time form. In this background, the intelligent control methods developed for discrete-time systems have drawn great attentions. This survey aims to present a summary of the state of the art of the design of FLC and NN-based intelligent control for discrete-time systems. For discrete-time FLC systems, numerous remarkable design approaches are introduced and a series of efficient methods to deal with the robustness, stability, and time delay of FLC discrete-time systems are recommended. Techniques for NN-based intelligent control for discrete-time systems, such as adaptive methods and adaptive dynamic programming approaches, are also reviewed. Overall, this paper is devoted to make a brief summary for recent progresses in FLC and NN-based intelligent control design for discrete-time systems as well as to present our thoughts and considerations of recent trends and potential research directions in this area.

Over the past half-century, the increasing use of computational tools for mathematical modelling and simulation was responsible for significant advances in the area of Multibody System Dynamics. However, there is still a high dependence on the use of proprietary software in this area. Noticing that most of the complex multibody systems share many components and subsystems, this paper aims to propose a modular modelling methodology in which the starting points are some already known mathematical models of subsystems and the corresponding descriptions of the constraints existing among them. The proposed algorithm is based on the computation of some orthogonal complements of Jacobian matrices, derived from the constraint equations among the subsystems, leading to a minimal system of equations without requiring the use of undetermined multipliers or generalized constraint forces. Such an algorithm can be implemented using general-purpose (eventually open source) software packages or programming languages. Another remarkable advantage of this methodology stems from the fact that even when different (Classical or Analytical Mechanics) formalisms have been used in the modelling of subsystems, it is still possible to use the proposed algorithm. Well-known examples and a rederivation of the Whipple bicycle model are used to illustrate applications of this novel methodology.

The development of autonomous robots for agricultural applications includes motion planning, fruit picking, and collision avoidance with surrounding environments, and these become challenging tasks. For harvesting applications, robust control of the manipulator is needed for the effective motion of the robot. Several combinations of Proportional(P)- Integrative(I)- Derivative(D) controllers are modelled and a simulation study was performed for trajectory tracking of a redundant manipulator in virtual agricultural environments. The article presents a comprehensive study on kinematic modelling and dynamic control of redundant manipulator for fruit-picking applications in virtual environments. The collisions with surrounding environment were eliminated using ‘bounding box technique’. The joint variables are obtained by constructing Inverse Kinematics (IK) problem and are determined using a classical optimization technique. Different controllers are modelled in the ‘Simulink’ environment and are tuned to generate error-free trajectory tracking during harvesting. The task space locations (TSLs) are considered as via-points, and joint variables at each TSLs are obtained by Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) technique. Joint-level trajectories are generated using Quintic and B-spline polynomials. For effective trajectory tracking, torque variations are controlled using the PID and Feedforward (FF) controller. The dynamic simulations of the robot manipulator are performed in Simscape Multibody software. Results show that the during the trajectory tracking of the manipulator, the Feed-forward controller performs best with Quintic polynomial trajectory.

In contrast to private cars, rail transit systems are a more effective way to deal with the emerging challenges in cities with high population densities, such as congestion, air pollution, and traffic emissions. Rail transit systems, however, are commonly costly, due to substantial investments in construction and maintenance. It is thus necessary to design the candidate rail transit systems carefully to ensure public transport accessibility and sustainability, with consideration of the space-time correlation of population densities. In this paper, the space-time correlations of population densities are incorporated into the design of a candidate rail transit line over years. A closed-formed mathematical programming model is proposed, with an optimisation objective of social welfare budget maximisation. The social welfare budget is defined as the summation of the expected social welfare and social welfare margins. The model decision variables include rail line length, rail station number, and project start time of the candidate rail transit line. The analytical solutions for the proposed rail design model are given explicitly for different scenarios with various constraints.

Abstract In this paper, a generalized technique for solving a class of nonlinear optimal control problems is proposed. The optimization problem is formulated based on the cost-to-go functional approach and the optimal solution can be obtained by Bellman’s technique. Specifically, a continuous nonlinear system is first discretized and a set of equality constraints can be obtained from the discretization. We show that, under a certain condition, the optimal solution of a problem in this class can be approximated by a solution of the set of equality constraints within any precision and the system is guaranteed to be stable under a control signal obtained from the solution. An iterative approach is then applied to numerically solve the set of equality constraints. The technique is tested on a nonlinear control problem from the class and simulation results show that the approach is not only effective but also leads to a fast convergence and accurate optimal solution.

Spatial cluster analysis is an important data mining task. Typical techniques include CLARANS, density- and gravity-based clustering, and other algorithms based on traditional von Neumann's computing architecture. The purpose of this paper is to propose a technique for spatial cluster analysis based on sticker systems of DNA computing. We will adopt the Bin-Packing Problem idea and then design algorithms of sticker programming. The proposed technique has a better time complexity. In the case when only the intracluster dissimilarity is taken into account, this time complexity is polynomial in the amount of data points, which reduces the NP-completeness nature of spatial cluster analysis. The new technique provides an alternative method for traditional cluster analysis.

AbstractModelling of oil well systems is important for a wide range of petroleum scientific and oil industrial processes. Considering the uncertainty of the measurements and the demand for empirical knowledge, a purely first‐principle model and a black‐box model based on data are not sufficient for accurately describing an oil well system. Thus, there is a growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of data‐driven methods combined with physical knowledge. However, the application of combination methods for dynamic nonlinear systems is still challenging. In this work, we demonstrate the application of a physics‐informed neural network to a gas lifting oil well system. The neural ordinary differential equation is the main tool for the modeling and the simulation is examined in Julia programming language. The advantage and drawbacks of the physics‐informed data‐driven method are analyzed.

The aim of this study is to provide a balanced distribution of air traffic controller workload (ATCW) across airspace sectors taking into account the complexity of airspace sectors and the factors affecting ATCW, both objective and perceived. Almost all the studies focusing on the airspace sectorisation problem use heuristic or metaheuristic algorithms in dynamic simulation environments instead of a mathematical modelling approach. The paper proposes a multi-objective mixed integer mathematical model for airspace sectorisation. The model is applied to the upper, en-route level of Turkish airspace. Geographical information systems (GIS) are used to advantage for airspace analysis. The multi-objective model developed in this paper is scalarised by using the conic scalarisation method. For solving the scalarised problem, the CPLEX and DICOPT solvers of GAMS software are implemented. Finally, the optimal sector boundaries of Turkish airspace are defined.
