Silvanidae is a small group of cucujoid beetles, and their fossil record is poorly documented. The two recently described genera from Burmese amber, Cretoliota Liu et al. and Protoliota Liu et al., are distinctive among all known Silvanidae, displaying markedly long antennae and mandibular horns in males, as found in the extant Uleiota Latreille. Due to the limited sampling of fossil specimens, the morphological variations of male mandibular horns remain a mystery. Here we report six well-preserved specimens of Protoliota with both male and female genitalia exposed from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber. Our discovery confirms the presence of remarkable sexual dimorphism in Protoliota. Males of Protoliota antennatus Liu et al. display short to very long mandibular horns and much longer antennae. Interesting morphological convergence of the beetles (Silvanidae and Staphylinidae) living under the bark of dead trees is briefly discussed. Our discovery represents the first definitive sexual dimorphism in beetles from Burmese amber.

Abstract The genus Airaphilus Redtenbacher, 1858 (Coleoptera: Silvanidae: Silvaninae) is recorded from Japan for the first time. The record is based on the discovery of a new apterous species, Airaphilus abei sp. nov., described and illustrated herein. The new species is similar to Airaphilus filiformis (Rosenhauer, 1856), however it can be distinguished by long antennae reaching about body midlength; anterior margin of pronotum about as wide as head; elytra without a humeral tooth, rounded to base and more to apices; and long metaventrite. Only five specimens have been found and these were collected in 1992 at Kokeyachi bog in the far north of Honshu. This bog and the adjacent wetlands have begun to dry out and are undergoing a transition to grassland. These factors, together with the apparently very limited distribution and the possibly restricted mobility due to lack of hind wings, suggest that at least in this locality the new species may be endangered.

(Amaryllidaceae), added to semolina using concentrations of 1.23, 3.61, and 5.88%, influence the mortality rate in the saw-toothed grain beetle Oryzaephilus surinamensis Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Silvanidae). Experiments were conducted in a laboratory at 28°C and relative humidity 60±5%. At the concentration of 1.23%, allspice seeds caused the highest mortality amongst the saw-toothed grain beetle. When concentrations of 3.61 and 5.88% were used, sage, peppermint and wormwood caused the highest statistically significant mortality of O. surinamensis

Dates are considered one of the most important foods consumed in Arab countries. Dates are commonly infested with the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis. Consequently, the date yield, quantity, and quality (economic value and seed viability) are negatively affected. This study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of air evacuation as eco-friendly and safe control method against adult O. surinamensis. Insects were obtained from the infested date purchased from a private store in sakaka city, Aljouf region, Saudi Arabia. Air evacuation (using a vacuum pump) and food deprivation were applied to O. surinamensis, and insect mortality was observed daily in comparison with the control group (administered both food and air). Application of both air evacuation, and food deprivation, significantly, increased the percentage of daily mortality when compared to control. Percentage accumulative mortality displayed very strong positive correlation with the time course in both cases of air-deprived and food-deprived groups. On the basis of lethal time values, the air evacuation method resulted in a comparable effect of food deprivation. Conclusively, the air-evacuation of the package is a very effective Eco-friendly and safe control method against O. surinamensis.

AbstractOryzaephilus surinamensis is one of the stored product insect that commonly found in Malaysia. The biological study through host range or food preferences of O. surinamensis is important for the development of sustainable management practice to control its infestation. The objective of this study was to identify the food preference of O. surinamensis to different plant products in relation to food type and moisture content. Twenty adult of O. surinamensis were exposed to three different group of food; dried fruits (date, raisin, apricot, fig), grain/cereals (rice, barley, oat grout, dried maize), and nuts (almond, ground nut, walnut, cashew nut) for 240h in laboratory Kulliyyah of Science, IIUM Kuantan. Moisture content in each food was also measured. It was found out that the most preferred food by O. surinamensis is oat groat of cereal grain group with medium level of moisture content. Further analysis on food moisture suggested that under current experimental conditions (temperature of 27℃ and 64% relative humidity within 240h of exposure), food moisture content does not affect pest infestation and distribution.

Annotation:
Elucidating the phylogenetic affinities of enigmatic fossils is crucial for resolving the early diversification of the superfamily Cucujoidea, a diverse group of polyphagan beetles whose relationships remain contentious. The systematic position of the Cretaceous genus Pleuroceratos known from Burmese amber has been uncertain; the genus was previously placed into Silvanidae, Sphindidae, and Cucujoidea incertae sedis. Here we describe a new species, Pleuroceratos jiewenae sp. nov., from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber and conduct a formal phylogenetic analysis to elucidate the position of the genus. We recover Pleuroceratos as nested within the family Phloeostichidae, represented in the modern fauna by four genera of fungivorous subcortical beetles with a highly disjunct distribution range. Pleuroceratos beetles are the sole fossil members of Phloeostichidae known to date and indicate that the family begun to diversify by the mid-Cretaceous.

The National Insect Collection (CNIN) constitutes the most representative entomological collection in Mexico. The coleopterans housed in the collection, mainly sampled in national territory, are represented by approximately 350,000 adult specimens mounted on entomological pins and nearly 250,000 preserved in alcohol. This catalogue includes information regarding 765 species from 255 genera classified into 34 families of Coleoptera types: Belidae Schönherr, Brentidae Billberg, Buprestidae Leach, Cantharidae Imhoff, Carabidae Latreille, Cerambycidae Latreille, Chrysomelidae Latreille, Cleridae Latreille, Curculionidae Latreille, Dytiscidae Leach, Elateridae Leach, Elmidae Curtis, Endomychidae Leach, Erotylidae Latreille, Geotrupidae Latreille, Heteroceridae MacLeay, Hydraenidae Mulsant, Hydrophilidae Latreille, Lampyridae Rafinesque, Leiodidae Fleming, Limnichidae Erichson, Lycidae Laporte, Meloidae Gyllenhal, Melolonthidae MacLeay, Passalidae Leach, Phengodidae LeConte, Ripiphoridae Gemminger, Scarabaeidae Latreille, Silphidae Latreille, Silvanidae Kirby, Staphylinidae Latreille, Telegeusidae Leng, Tenebrionidae Latreille and Zopheridae Solier. Abstract Our aim was to study the attractiveness and the replant effect ion for crucifer oil, celery oil, carnation oil, essential oil and castor oil on the saw-toothed grain beetel Oryzaephilus surinamensis L. Result showed that carnation oil gave the highest mean of attractive for the adults which were 17%. All oils had significant replant effect for the adults and the celery oil was the first in replant percentage which achieve to 73%, then the castor oil by 63%, and crucifer oil and essential oil by 50%, while the carnation oil had the latest percentage which was 47%.
