Background: Self-medication is a major public health concern which has increased at the community level. It may lead to delay in diagnosis as well as care seeking. Present study was undertaken to find out the prevalence and pattern of self medication practices among adult population in an urban area of Siliguri Municipal Corporation area of West Bengal. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 110 adults in urban areas of Siliguri Municipal Corporation area by purposive sampling. Results: The prevalence of self-medication among urban adults was found to be 47.2%. More than 50% of the study subjects had symptoms like fever and headache for resorting medication by him. Common drugs were antipyretic or paracetamol (65.4%), antacid (50%), anti-inflammatory (44.2%) or anti-allergic (42.3%). Significant association was found between occupational status (engaged in unskilled work) and self-medication. Conclusion: Self-medication practices are a dual sword to manage time, relieve overburdened medical practice and increased resistance of pathogens due to delayed diagnosis etc. Health educational activities should be initiated to encourage common people in order to utilize health care services from government facilities which are now made at a subsidized cost.

AbstractIdentification of suitable landfill sites for urban wastes with ease and economic benefits in the metropolitan area is a complex task. Most of the developing countries consider wastelands outside of the urban areas are the ideal places to dispose of urban wastes. Landfill site selection is an essential planning procedure that helps to avoid environmental concerns such as water contamination, public health degradation caused by unsanitary landfills. So, employing a geographic information system (GIS) and multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA), this study was carried out to find an appropriate planning waste dump site. Nine thematic layers were evaluated as key criteria, including elevation, slope, geology, lineament, land value, distance from river, roads, residence, and Land use and land cover (LULC) weights assigned using Analytical Hierarchical Process (AHP) method analysis. The relative relevance of each parameter was calculated using Saaty’s 1 to 9 priority scale. The consistency ratio was used to check the weighting of each parameter, allowing the efficiency of the chosen parameters to be justified. The overlay analysis of all parameters with aid of GIS provides suitable sites that were marked and refined after the comprehensive field visits were performed. According to the findings, in the study area, 35.61% area is very low suitable for landfilling, 32.64% area is low suitable, 19.37% area is moderate suitable, 8.90% area is highly suitable and certainly, 3.48% area is very high suitable by Natural breaks classification. The very high suitable site belongs to Dhadagoch, Gadheaganj, and its surroundings in the study area. Nevertheless, the present study can help urban planners and concerned authorities to better succeed in urban waste management in the Siliguri municipal corporation planning area.

Progressive population concentration to the urban centres has fuelled urban expansion in both horizontal as well as vertical direction, consequences in the urban landscape change. This growth resulted in posing many complexities towards sustainable urban development which can be counted by observing the changing proportions of natural landscapes and built up areas. Local climate zones (LCZs), a systematic classification of natural lands and built up lands, are identified in Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) and its surrounding region to explore the spatio temporal complexity of urban growth in recent years. Rapid urbanization and population growth of SMC have led to change the building states from low rise to mid and high rise which added an important feature to the urban landscape dynamics of the area. The work intends to provide the vision of spatial urban morphology of the area through investigation of its changing land use and changing urban built space using the LCZ classification. The study shows that the WUDAPT method can accurately generate LCZs, especially the built type LCZs. The results of the proposed LCZ classification scheme are tested using error matrix for the year 2001 and 2021 having coefficient values of 0.79 and 0.81 respectively. The study explores the changing pattern of building states of SMC using LCZ products, which is essential for proper urban planning implementations.
