Abstract Modern Chinese confirmative shi (as in mei cuo, wo shi yao dusi ni (沒錯，我是要毒死你) ‘that’s right. I really wanted to poison you to death’) is not an auxiliary but an adverb. It derives from the adjective shi ‘true, real’ in Old Chinese (Yan zhi yan shi ye (偃之言是也) ‘what Yan said was true’). The grammaticalization pathway of the Modern Chinese confirmative shi is different from that of the copula shi (Laozhang shi huoche siji (老張是貨車司機) ‘Laozhang is a truck driver’) or the auxiliary shi (Laozhang shi kai huoche, wo shi kai keche (老張是開貨車，我是開客車) ‘Laozhang drives a truck and I drive a coach car’). Modern Chinese confirmative shi, copula shi, and auxiliary shi have the same morphological form because they all appear to derive from the adjective shi or demonstrative ( shi ke ren, shu bu ke ren ( 是可忍，孰不可忍) ‘if this could be endured, is there anything else that could not be endured’) in Old Chinese. Such a pattern of morphological sameness seems to be cross-linguistically rare, if not unique.

Abstract By rejoining several fragmentary slips in the Shanghai Museum *Shi Liu wen yu Fuzi manuscript, this article seeks to adjust the order of the existing bamboo slips as well as to clarify the meaning of the text. On this basis, and through a comparison with transmitted texts, the identities of the main characters “Shi Liu” and “Master” in the bamboo manuscript are discussed. We find that the words, deeds, and thoughts of “Shi Liu” and “Master” bear certain similarities to “Shi Qiu” and “Confucius” as recorded in literature.

ABSTRACTThis paper assembles three oracle-bone inscriptions divined at the same time from the Wu Yi-Wen Ding period. Two are identical, being a paired divination inquiring into whether the event ri yue you shi was or was not auspicious. The third asks whether, in light of this ri yue you shi, it would be auspicious to sacrifice to Shang Jia.Since 1925, when Wang Xiang , first proposed th at the character yue should be read as xi, his position has been accepted by Liu Chaoyang De Xiaoqian , Chen Mengijia , Zhang Peiyü , Xu Zhentao , the Zhongguo Tianwenxue jianshi bianxiezu , and the Zhongguo Tianwenxueshi zhengli yenjiu xiaozu Yue was first interpreted as yue in 1933 by Shang Chengzuo . Those subscribing to this reading include Dong Zuobin , Chen Zungui , Yü Xingwu Liu Chaoyang, Chen Mengiia, Joseph Needham, Zhao Quemin and Chen Banghuai .Among these scholars Liu Chaoyang holds that “there is no distinction between xi and yue,” while Chen Mengjia believes that the phrase “ri yue you shi” can also be read “ri xi you shi,” hence they accept both interpretations.

Abstract Examining how contemporary poets raised in China are looking at classical Chinese poetry from the Tang—in particular, the poetry and the figure of Li Bai 李白 (701–762)—this article questions the epistemological divide, common to scholarship, between premodern and modern Chinese poetry. The texts come from Shenqing shi 深情史 (Histories of Affection) by Liu Liduo 劉麗朵 (1979–); The Banished Immortal, Chinese-American poet and novelist Ha Jin's 哈金 (1956–) biography of Li Bai; the book-length poem-sequence Tang 唐, by Yi Sha 伊沙 (1966–); and poet Xi Chuan's 西川 (1963–) scholarly book Tang shi de dufa 唐詩的讀法 (Reading Tang Poetry). The author contends not only that these writers' dealings with Tang poetry make it part of a still-living tradition but also that such engagement offers a way to understand the dynamic, rather than static, canonicity of Tang poetry.

In addition, the male genitalia of two known species are illustrated. The previously unknown female sex of Ocellarnaca emeiensis brachyptera Shi & Zhu, 2021 is described and illustrated.

Luochi Temple Tablet Written by Su Shi is now kept in Memorial Temple to Liu Zongyuan in Liuzhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. To date, there are four editions of rubbings of the tablet. The first and the second are both old rubbings collected by Liu Quanfu and Wang Yirong respectively. The third edition is collected by Qin Qingzeng from Liangxi District of Wuxi City. The fourth edition is an complete rubbing collected by the Institute of Human Sciences of Kyoto University. This article compares the shape and location of the same Chinese characters chosen from the four editions and determines that the edition collected by Liu Quanfu is an earlier one.

AbstractBan Gu's compilation of the Han shu may be seen in the context of a number of intellectual and religious developments. By his time the idea of the Tian ming and the theory of the Wu xing were being applied to imperial times. Officials were quoting the sayings of Kongzi to support their arguments, and the writings of distinguished scholars such as Jing Fang, Liu Xiang, Liu Xin and Yang Xiong were well known. The religious controversies that had begun in the reign of Chengdi had died down. The pursuit of scholarship had received a new impetus thanks partly to the discussions held in 79 ce. Ban Gu drew somewhat freely on existing literature, being prudent to select material that would not arouse enmity; his sister called on official documents to complete her part of the history. As an innovator Ban Gu introduced chapters on subjects that had not been treated in the Shi ji, such as bibliography and the laws. Ready to criticize the actions of officials or the character of an emperor openly, he also contrived to do so implicitly.

Keys to all genera of Rhaphidophorinae and all species of Rhaphidophora from China are given. And the female of Rhaphidophora sichuanensis Liu & Zhang, 2002 is also added.

Abstract Background In Israel, the whole population is covered by comprehensive universal health insurance. Despite that, most of the population purchases supplementary health insurance (SHI). It has been shown that individuals purchase more health insurance and preventive medicine when they are uncertain of their state of health, while a majority may not fully understand basic concepts in their health insurance coverage. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of fear of catastrophic health expenditures and unrealistic expectations in purchasing SHI, which does not cover expenses for life-threatening illnesses. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted among random samples of 814 Jews and 800 Arabs in Israel. A structured questionnaire was administered by telephone using random digit dialling. Log-linear regression was used to identify factors associated with reasons for purchasing SHI and expectations from SHI. Results The most common reason for purchasing SHI was fear of catastrophic health-related expenditures (41%). The most important service expected from SHI was ‘cancer medications’ (mean 4.68 [standard deviation 0.87]). Differences in the reasons for purchasing SHI and in expectations from SHI were found according to population group, age, gender and education. Conclusions Consumers’ misconceptions and fear of catastrophic health expenditures are major factors leading to the purchase of SHI, despite universal health coverage. Improved and accessible information should help consumers make informed decisions as to whether or not to purchase SHI.

This study examined how Taiwanese philosophy has been received and researched in South Korea since its start to the present day. It takes the form of a survey, classifying the articles about Taiwanese philosophy which were published in South Korea over the years from 1994 to 2018 by the theme. It selected nine philosophers whose influence was profound in Taiwanese philosophy and observed the currents in the scholarship on each philosopher. The names of the selected philosophers are: Fang Thomé H., Hu Shi, Huang Chun-chieh, Lin Yutang, Liu Shuxian (Liu Shu-hsien), Mou Zongsan, Tang Junyi (Tang Chun-I), Xu Fuguan, Yu Yingshi (Yu Ying-shih). Sixty-one related papers were summarized and reviewed, and each of them was classified by the publication date, author, language, publisher and keywords. The survey revealed the limitations in Asian philosophy scholarship with regard to Taiwanese philosophy in South Korea, in terms of both quantity and quality. The survey also suggested a possible solution to these limitations and directions for scholars in the future. The study thus serves as a foundation that can boost discussion and the balanced development of South Korean philosophy studies, as well as of Asian philosophy in general.

Abstract. Rock mass classification is one of the empirical methods for slope stability analysis approach. Rock mass clasification systems that have been developed such as RSR “Rock Structur Rating” (Wickham et al., 1972), RMR “Rock Mass Rating” (Bienieawski, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1989), NGI Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) and the results of the development of the new "Rock Mass Clasification on Rock Slope Stability Assessment" (Ya-Ching Liu, Chao-Shi Chen, 2007) is a combination of the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP, Saaty, 1980) and Fuzzy systems. Delphi Method (FDM, Kaufmann and Gupta, 1988) this system consists of 3 grouping factors to assume slope stability consisting of geological, geometrical and environmental factors and the method developed by Ya-Ching Liu, Chao-Shi Chen, 2007 will be used in research this. The observation location used to use this method is spread over 7 mining blocks, namely block 67 - 73 which produces 2 classification characteristics of rock mass which are stable and tend to be unstable.Abstrak. Klasifikasi massa batuan merupakan salah satu metode empirik untuk pendekatan analisis kestabilan lereng. sistem pengelompokan batuan (Rock mass clasification) yang telah dikembangkan seperti RSR “Rock Structur Rating” (Wickham et al., 1972), RMR “Rock Mass Rating” (Bienieawski, 1973, 1975, 1979, 1989), NGI Q-system (Barton et al., 1974) dan hasil pengembangan yang baru “Rock Mass Clasification on Rock Slope Stability Assessment” (Ya-Ching Liu, Chao-Shi Chen, 2007) merupakan kombinasi sistem Analitytic Hierarchy Process (AHP, saaty, 1980) dan Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM, Kaufmann and Gupta, 1988) sistem ini terdiri dari 3 faktor penglompokan untuk mengasumsikan kestabilan lereng terdiri dari faktor geologi, geometri dan lingkungan dan metode yang dikembangkan oleh Ya-Ching Liu, Chao-Shi Chen, 2007 akan digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Late Tang Shi Jing-tang called on Kithan to aid after the rebellion. As a result, Kithan dispatched troops to destroy Late Tang and help Shi Jing-tang to establish Late Jin. Shi Jing-tang gave Yan-yun-shi-liu-zhou to Kithan in return for this support and paid a huge regular payment of property every year. Shi Jing-tang devoted himself to Kithan's Tai-zong through his reign; the provision of supplies was also faithful. Due to this attitude of Shi Jing-tang, no problems occurred between Kithan and Late Jin during his reign. However, change occurred in 942 when Shi Jing-tang died. Late Jin refused to call himself a servant to Kithan. Kithan then angered and decided on the policy of the invasion of Late Jin. Kithan began the invasion in 946 and destroyed Late Jin. In 947, Tai-zong of Kithan entered Kaifeng, the capital of Late Jin. Since then, Tai-zong has also tried to stabilize order immediately. Tai-zong, after stabilizing Kaifeng's situation, performed a ceremony to be crowned emperor. His emperor's ceremony followed thoroughly Chinese conventions. The country's name was also changed to Liao. Tai-zong hoped to be accepted as a Chinese monarch by the people of North China. He was directed toward Chinese domination and Chinese monarchy, but lacked understanding of the principles of Chinese administrative organizations, and thus the domination of Liao caused resentment of the people in various places. In this situation, in March 947, Tai-zong of Kithan abandoned direct rule of North China and returned to the north. The withdrawal of Tai-zong was apparently an arbitrage of failures over North China's rule.

The technique applies numerical predistortion of an input image used for hologram generation. By the middle of the third century BC, the Chinese world was on the verge of a radical change: the existence of traditional kingdoms was about to end and unification within an empire had become inevitable. Two political and social visions, Confucianism and Legalism, compete for preferential access to the proverbial ‘prince's ear’, and the values and their practices seem to be diametrically opposed. We discuss these two visions around several passages from Han Feizi, Lunyu, Lüshi Chunqiu and Shi ji in which the conviction of criminal acts is correlated with the efficiency and success of the state. By proposing the primacy of universal law or, on the contrary, that of family loyalty, the two schools of thought support opposite models of political action and define two distinct typologies of political relations. In the last part of the commentary, we assess the impact of legal or moral norms on political practice, especially in the context of a series of events that led to the formation of the Empire under the leadership of Qin Shi Huangdi

They have constructed LCD generalized Gabidulin codes of length $ n $ over $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ by using self-dual bases of $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ over $ \mathbb{F}_{q} $ when $ q $ is even or both $ q $ and $ n $ are odd. Whereas for the case of odd $ q $ and even $ n $, whether LCD generalized Gabidulin codes of length $ n $ over $ \mathbb{F}_{q^{n}} $ exist or not is still open. Abstract Naitō Konan (1866-1934) was one of towering figures of twentieth-century Sinology, in Japan, China, and elsewhere. His theories concerning Chinese history continue to influence us all, often through secondary or tertiary means. Among his many books and articles is a large volume entitled Shina shigaku shi (History of Chinese historiography), arguably the first such comprehensive work in any language and still unsurpassed to this day, roughly eighty years after the chapters which comprise it were first delivered as lectures in Kyoto. Naitō argued that Chinese historical writing was divided, as we all know now, into two traditions: the comprehensive style (tongshi) launched by Sima Qian and the single-period style (duandai shi) begun somewhat later by Ban Gu. Naitō himself always favored the former, and he showed a marked predilection for the major historical works over the centuries by Chinese with the character tong in their titles: such as Liu Zhiji's Tong shi, Du You's Tong zhi (about which he lectured before the Japanese emperor in 1931), Ma Duanlin's Wenxian tongkao, and most notably Zhang Xuecheng's Wenshi tongyi. He did not disragrd or disrespect the duandai shi approach, but he did believe that by cutting off chunks of history one could not get a proper sense of the long-term forces at work in the historical process, what the great French historians later would call la longue durée.

It contains five species: Haplotropis brunneriana Saussure, 1888; Haplotropis xiai Ye, Shi & Li 2016; Haplotropis zhuoluensis Ye, Shi & Li 2016; Haplotropis aqiensis Zhang, Lin et Yin, 2018 and Haplotropis shandongensis Zhang, Yin et Liu, 2019 distributed mainly in Amur River region of Asia and China only (Saussure, 1888; Bey-Bienko et Mishchenko, 1951; Otte, 1994; Yin, Shi et Yin, 1996; Storozhenko & Paik, 2011; Yin et al, 2014; Dong et al, 2015; Ye et al, 2016; Zhang et al, 2017; Zhang et al, 2018; Zhang et al, 2019; Cigliano et al, 2019). A new species Haplotropis heiheensis sp. nov. is described in this paper. The new species is similar to Haplotropis aqiensis Zhang, Lin et Yin, 2018, but differs from latter by Krauss’ organ of male without ramified keel; tegmine narrower, length 2.4 times width; cercus of male gently tapering at apical half part; minimum width 1.4 times length in mesosternum and epiphallus with 36 spikes. Type specimens are deposited in the College of Plant Protection, Shandong Agricultural University, Taian, Shandong, China.

AbstractThis article examines late Tang poetic representations of the early fifth-century tale of Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao's romance with divine maidens at a Shangri-La-like peach blossom font. Shi poems by such poets as Liu Yuxi (772-822) and Yuan Zhen (779-831), and a group of Huajian ("among the flowers") ci poems under the tune "Nüguanzi" ("The Daoist Priestess") by Wen Tingyun (ca. 812-866) and others, reveal the exploration of the old tale as a rich source of allegorical tropes. In particular, the late Tang poets consistently revitalize the Liu-Ruan tale's bifurcation between the immortal and the mortal worlds, a division between "two worlds" that enabled them to express a range of different meanings at different levels, for example in politics or when talking of love affairs. Cet article s'intéresse aux représentations chez les poètes de la fin des Tang du récit (remontant au début du ve siècle) de l'idylle entre Liu Chen et Ruan Zhao et de jeunes immortelles à une source aux pêchers évoquant le paradis terrestre. Les poèmes shi de Liu Yuxi (772-822) ou Yuan Zhen (779-831), ainsi qu'un groupe de ci "parmi les fleurs" (huajian) sur l'air de la "prêtresse taoïste" (Nüguanzi) par Wen Tingyun (ca. 812-866) et d'autres, montrent qu'on trouvait dans ce vieux récit une riche source de tropes allégoriques. Shi-Liu-Wei-Liu-Qi-Yin (SLWLQY) was traditionally used to treat cancers. However, scientific evidence of the anticancer effects still remains undefined. In this study, we aimed to clarify the possible mechanisms of SLWLQY in treating cancer. We evaluated the effects of SLWLQY on apoptosis-related experiments inducing in TSGH-8301 cells by (i) 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-zyl)-2,5-diphenylterazolium bromide (MTT) for cytotoxicity; (ii) cell-cycle analysis and (iii) western blot analysis of the G2/M-phase and apoptosis regulatory proteins. Human bladder carcinoma TSGH-8301 cells were transplanted into BALB/c nude mice as a tumor model for evaluating the antitumor effect of SLWLQY. Treatment of SLWLQY resulted in the G2/M phase arrest and apoptotic death in a dose-dependent manner, accompanied by a decrease in cyclin-dependent kinases (cdc2) and cyclins (cyclin B1). SLWLQY stimulated increases in the protein expression of Fas and FasL, and induced the cleavage of caspase-3, caspase-9 and caspase-8. The ratio of Bax/Bcl2was increased by SLWLQY treatment. SLWLQY markedly reduced tumor size in TSGH-8301 cells-xenografted tumor tissues. In the tissue specimen, SLWLQY up-regulated the expression of Fas, FasL and Bax proteins, and down-regulated Bcl2as well as inin vitroassay. Our results showed that SLWLQY reduced tumor growth, caused cell-cycle arrest and apoptosis in TSGH-8301 cells via the Fas and mitochondrial pathway.

Let τDt denote the first time the Brownian motion exits from Dt. Upper and lower bounds with exact constants of log P(τDt > t) are given as t → ∞, depending on the shape of the domain Dt. The problem is motivated by the early results of Lifshits and Shi, Li, Lu in the exit probabilities. The methods of proof are based on the calculus of variations and early works of Lifshits and Shi, Li, Shao in the exit probabilities of Brownian motion.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries feature a high theoretical capacity of 1675 mAh/g and hence is considered as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries. However, deployment of Li-S batteries has been hindered by the low practical energy and limited cycle life.1, 2 Reducing cathode porosity is essential to balancing the electrolyte distribution in Li-S cell, conserving more pore-filling electrolyte to extend cell cycle life.3-5 However, low-porosity electrodes built with nanosized sulfur/carbon (S/C) materials suffer from high tortuosity that significantly deteriorates electrode wetting and hence sulfur utilization. Enabling operation of high-loading sulfur electrodes under both low-porosity and lean-electrolyte conditions is still a challenge and is seldom discussed. In this study,6 we demonstrated a novel and facile strategy for constructing low-tortuosity through-pores across both vertical and planar directions of electrodes by casting large particles into single-particle-layer electrodes. Through multi-scale characterizations and simulations, correlations between material/electrode structures, electrolyte permeability, polysulfide migration, and sulfur reactions were elucidated. The high-loading and dense sulfur cathode fabricated by this method delivers a high specific capacity (>1000 mAh g-1) at a very low electrolyte/sulfur (E/S) ratio of 4 μL mg-1. This study provides a novel approach to reducing the tortuosity of dense sulfur electrodes by manipulating the porosity distribution, which would be also applicable to improving the rate capability of other high-energy electrodes. Phlugiolopsis was proposed by Zeuner in 1940 with Phlugiolopsis henryi Zeuner, 1940. Chinese scholars Xia & Liu first studied the genus in 1993 and described three new species from Wuling Mountains Area of Southwestern China, among which Phlugiolopsis brevis Xia & Liu, 1993 and Phlugiolopsis tuberculata Xia & Li, 1993 were mainly distributed in Guizhou Province. Twenty years later, Bian et al. (2013) described the third species of Phlugiolopsis from Guizhou, namely Phlugiolopsis xinanensis Bian, Shi & Chang, 2013. Compared with Yunnan Province, the classification of Phlugiolopsis in Guizhou is far from sufficient. Herein based on new specimens deposited in Guangxi Normal University, we describe one new species from Guizhou, China.

We propose the genus Flospesgen. nov. for two new species, Flospes guangxiensissp. nov. and Flospes viridipennissp. nov., obtained from Guangxi and Hainan provinces, China, respectively, based on male genitalia traits. Three other species with similar genitalia are placed in the new genus: Flospes fujianensis (Wang et al., 1999), comb. nov., Flospes hainanensis (He et al., 2010), comb. nov., and Flospes denticulatus (Liu & Shi, 2011), comb. nov. The new species are described, illustrated, and their ranges are given.

A new species, Polionemobius gyirongensis Ma & Wang, sp. nov., is reported from Tibet, China. Its appearance is similar to that of Polionemobius yunnanus Liu & Shi, 2014, with a small-sized body and oval notch on both sides of the pronotum. Description and illustrations for the new species are provided here. At the same time, we compared Polionemobius ebony Wu & Ma, 2022 and Pteronemobius nigriscens (Shiraki, 1911) and determined that they are different species.
