O presente artigo busca analisar as reações e comentários de seguidores de páginas e canais oficiais da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia nas redes sociais sobre a produção de conteúdos de ficção audiovisual na plataforma de streaming Feliz7play. Para tanto, o artigo elabora um panorama socio-teológico da relação conflituosa entre o adventismo e a ficção audiovisual, seguida de uma breve descrição do uso de ficção audiovisual pelos adventistas no contexto estadunidense e latino-americano e, por fim, propõe uma análise netnográfica da reação dos adventistas às obras de ficção audiovisual na plataforma Feliz7Play através das páginas oficiais da denominação nas redes sociais. Conclui-se que os problemas teológicos que a cultura adventista considera que a ficção audiovisual possui são uma projeção da crítica que o discurso fundador elaborou sobre a ficção na literatura e no teatro que, por sua vez, repercute na produção de conteúdo ficcional adventista na atualidade.Abstract: This article seeks to analyze the reactions and comments of followers of official Seventh-day Adventist Church pages on social networks about the production of audiovisual fiction content on the Feliz7play streaming platform. To this end, the article elaborates a socio-theological overview of the conflicting relationship between Adventism and audiovisual fiction, followed by a brief description of the use of audiovisual fiction by Adventists in the North American and Latin American context and, finally, proposes a Netnographic analysis of Adventists’ reaction to audiovisual fiction productions on the Feliz7Play platform through the Adventist official pages on social networks. It is concluded that the theological problems that Adventist culture considers audiovisual fiction to have are a projection of the criticism that the founding discourse elaborated on fiction in literature and theater, which, in turn, has an strong impact on the production of fictional Adventist content today.

This article studies the symbiotic relationship between social networks and Christian conversion among some Seventh-day Adventists in contemporary China. Drawing on the Chinese Adventist testimonies, I argue that the longstanding kinship, friendship, and discipleship networks (guanxi 關係) are fundamental to the Adventist conversion process. This extensive web of human relationships helps sustain potential converts’ interest in Christianity, nurture their understanding of Adventism, and reinforce their efforts to cultivate a distinctive Christian selfhood and identity in Adventist terms. These relationships also give meaning to the Adventist congregational practices such as Sabbath observance and healthy lifestyle, insofar as the converts rely on the relational resources of the family and church for support. In addition to the positive connection between social mobility and conversion, these stories reveal the challenge of downward social mobility when the converts are confronted with the tension between adhering to Adventist doctrinal practices and pursuing higher education in secular institutions. Lastly, this study addresses the function of Christian publication in the conversion process. Through the publication of their conversion testimonies, the converts seek to make Adventism easily accessible to ordinary people by showing the relation between Adventist theology and the daily lives of Christians.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a worldwide Christian denomination with a rich heritage. Thus, the Adventist Church considers itself to be set apart from the world with a unique mission; members also follow distinctive lifestyle practices. But are Seventh-day Adventists really a unique denomination or are they just a different flavor of mainstream Protestantism? Using data from the FACT 2020 survey and comparing the Adventist sample (N = 313) with the entire interfaith sample (N = 15,278), researchers compared different aspects of church life, including vitality and church growth, local church leadership, engagement in spiritual practices, and engagement in relational spiritual activities. While the data from the FACT 2020 survey present unique strengths of Adventist congregations, weaknesses were also revealed, as compared with the interfaith sample.

In the past decade, Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) historiography has enjoyed an efflorescence that warrants the attention of church historians. Two notable books mark the surge of interest in Adventism and its prophet: one of them an extraordinary denominational history, Seeking a Sanctuary: Seventh-day Adventism and the American Dream, by Malcolm Bull and Keith Lockhart (1989; 2007); the other an excellent collection of essays, Ellen Harmon White: American Prophet, edited by Terrie Dopp Aamodt, Gary Land, and Ronald L. Numbers (2014). Both books remind church historians that Seventh-day Adventism deserves its due as one of America's original religions. Since 2005, however, a number of books have appeared that understandably have received less scrutiny. The Adventist Pioneer Series, in particular, produced by SDA scholars and published by SDA presses, has largely escaped the notice of the wider, non-SDA historical community. This is unfortunate. There is the inevitable unevenness among these volumes, and given their intent to serve a popular Adventist audience, there is also the predictable parochialism in them, in some more than others. Nevertheless, to date there are several books in the series, and no doubt more to follow, which should command serious scholarly interest. To make our way through this largely unfamiliar historiographical landscape calls for a little mapping. Most of these authors come from SDA backgrounds, whatever distance they have gone from them. It will be necessary, then, to reflect on the differences between a historian of Adventism and an Adventist historian, secular versus supernatural history, and apologists who rate scholarly notice and those who do not. It will be important as well to realize that there is no hard, unyielding line between these differences.

Seventh day Adventist, as a religion-based transnational organization, have the potential to support global peace building. Seventh day Adventist exist in various countries in the world, including in Indonesia, as one of the plural countries that officially recognizes Christianity. This study aims to analyze the contribution of Seventh day Adventist transnational organizations to building global peace through tolerance by using case studies in Indonesia as the focus of research. This research is qualitative in nature with an intrinsic case study method. Data was collected using in-depth interviews, observation, and document studies. Informan include Seventh day Adventist regional church leaders, women administrators, Youth Ministries, Pathfinders, Adventists, other religious leaders, and non-adventist communities to support the triangulation of informan. The analysis is supported by the theory of neoliberalism and Huntington's clash of civilizations. The study found that the contribution of the Seventh day Adventist can be seen through a global identity that is firmly structured and consistent so that it is able to build and strengthen the value of tolerance of its members in various countries, which in turn encourages the building of global peace. As a religious-based transnational organization, Seventh day Adventist in Indonesia has activities that are consistent with a clear line of coordination from the regional to the international level. This is able to influence the values held by its members. In this way, these transnational organizations contribute to the quality of global peace.

The article presents an analysis of the charitable activities of the Seventh-day Adventist Church as one of the representatives of the Protestant community. It was determined that one of the priority areas of social service to the community. Adventists consider charity, through which they try in every possible way to help people suffering from hunger, hostilities, conflicts and the like. In particular, attention is focused on the dominant Adventist charitable programs, such as: "The Eastern Angel" and "Hands of Hope", through which Seventh-day Adventists provide material and other assistance to the population in different parts of Ukraine. It has been established that from the moment of their inception to the present day Adventists have been carrying out important social programs aimed at improving the physical and material situation of socially unprotected segments of the population. Attention is focused on the fact that the contribution of Adventists to the socio-economic development of Ukraine, on the one hand, is relatively insignificant, but on the other hand, due to the conscientious fulfillment of their civic duties, believers of this denomination systematically serve the needs of society to the best of their ability. Adventists define their duty to the state and society as follows: paying taxes in good faith, developing business and creating new jobs, establishing real human relations, and active charity. It has been established that the life of Adventists is subject to Christian ethics: property rights, hard work, freedom of entrepreneurship, charity. As a result, all actions of the representatives of this religion are aimed at a person and his needs. A conditional guide in the social ministry of Adventists is the "Social Teachings of the Church of Seventh-day Adventists", which sets out the principles of social responsibility of Adventists to the society of which they themselves are a part. A powerful charitable organization of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the Adventist Relief and Development Agency, through which the Church is trying to help people in crisis situations. It has been established that since 2014, ADRA has been actively helping residents in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. The reports of ADRA were analyzed, according to which it was established that the Adventist charitable agency implements food, non-food and other programs throughout Ukraine.

The article provides an overview of the social practices of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The level of Adventist participation in educational, health, philanthropic and political activities is analyzed. It is determined that the educational activity of Adventists is based on the integration of Christian values into the educational process in order to educate a purposeful person who is able to serve God and society at a high level. Adventist medical and health activities are aimed at preventing physical illness, as it is believed that the disease is easier to prevent than to cure. Adventists practice charity through the officially established Adventist Relief and Development Agency, which believes that the Church’s assistance to society must meet not only the spiritual but also the physical needs of man. Adventist participation in politics is not approved, but it is not forbidden. This is due to the conflict and rivalry that arises in the political race, so it is desirable to use your talents in those areas that bring peace and good to society. It is stated that the central idea of the social teaching of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is the protection of freedom of conscience and the dignity of the human person. Thus, by putting the principles of social doctrine into practice, the Seventh-day Adventist church premises become the Church’s social laboratories, through which the faithful of this denomination achieve two goals. The first of them is aimed at spreading their own religious beliefs and teachings, and the second – following the example of Christ, who during his life on earth served the physical needs of society around him. As a result of the study, the document “Social Teaching of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ukraine” aims to implement the Church’s two goals: educational and charitable, the implementation of which allows the denomination to positively represent themselves in Ukrainian and world society.

Clapping is considered as a media of praise and thanks in Christian worship. Some give space to this practice while other reject it. This article tried to identify the biblical foundation of these ideas, and was carried out through the following phases: formulating the problem, preparing the title, and searching the related supporting materials in the library research and electronic facilities. The research focused on three main aspects: the clapping in the Bible, the Christian and practice of clapping in worship services, and clapping in Seventh-day Adventist Church. It is found that there is no Bible text and theological evidence which support the practice of clapping in the place of worship, in other words clapping in the church services is unbiblical, and for this reason clapping in Seventh-day Adventists worship services is not necessary. Instead of clapping, the use of amen is suggested in responding the message or musical presentation. Since clapping has become controversial issue in Adventist worship services, the church leaders need to instruct and guide the church members to the right understanding of clapping. Introduction: The Seventh-day Adventist doctrine of the pre-advent investigative judgment has been attacked by some former Adventist members. Desmond Ford, one of the opponents, doubted the historical basis of the doctrine. He argued that Adventist’s distinctive doctrine highly relies upon and can merely be proven from E. G. White’s writings. He claimed that the Millerites and the early Sabbatarian Adventist did not teach this teaching. No references in their writings explained this doctrine. The purpose of this study is to present historical facts from the writings of Adventist pioneers as an evaluation to the objection. Methods: This qualitative study is a historical approach utilized documentary research method. From each development stage of the view, researcher employed the primary resource. The secondary resources only used to see current opinion about the subject. Results: From the historical facts, it is found that the teaching of the pre-advent investigative judgment has been taught before E. G. White wrote it. Some Millerites and early Sabbatarian Adventists employed several terms to express the concept, such as the typical Day of Atonement, breastplate of judgment, announcement of God’s judgment hour, scene of God’s, Christ’s parable of the wedding ceremony, judgment of the “house of God”, the term “Laodicea”, and God’s rewards either for salvation or punishment at the second coming of Christ. Thus, it is evident that before E. G. White wrote about the pre-advent investigative judgment, some Millerites and early Sabbatarian Adventists have already mentioned it in their writings. Discussion: The terms used by Millerites and Sabbatarian Adventists to describe the teaching of the pre-advent investigative judgment are important to prove that the doctrine is not merely derived from E. G. White. Further study of the concept of the pre advent judgment in the early, medieval, reformation, and modern period.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a Christian denomination with roots in the Millerites’ experience in North America in the nineteenth century. From its inception until the 1960s, Seventh-day Adventism was concentrated in North America, with growing but scant membership in other parts of the world. Between the late 1960s and the beginning of the 1990s, however, there were dramatic and unprecedented changes in the trajectory of Seventh-day Adventism. Thousands of converts were coming from the Global South: Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This article briefly describes the movement of the statistical center of global Adventism from 1863 to the present.

Throughout the history of Seventh-day Adventists, the investigative (or pre-advent) judgment has been one of the most controversial doctrines, challenged and questioned more than any other Adventist belief. This paper explores the reasons critics of Adventism, and particularly Albion Fox Ballenger, object to the doctrine of the investigative judgement. Ballenger was an ex-Adventist minister and one of the strongest critics of Adventist doctrine of the sanctuary during the first part of the 20th century. All other criticism of the doctrine, and particularly of the investigative judgment, go back to Ballenger. This paper is the first of a two-part series on the investigative judgment. The first part offers an abridged exposition of Ballenger’s soteriology and his critique of the investigative judgment doctrine. The second article will conclude with a theological analysis of the critique of the doctrine advanced by Ballenger and his evangelical followers in the context a broader understanding of Protestant soteriology.

Orthodox believers have been found to be prejudiced against Protestants, including Adventists. On the one hand, adherents of Orthodoxy see Adventism as a foreign (foreign) religious element, whose members level the millennial traditions of the dominant Church in Ukraine. On the other hand, it is believed that this denomination, combining in its doctrinal system certain elements of the teachings of the Baptist and Jewish religions, has become a religious platform for the spread of heretical ideas among Orthodox Christians. Moreover, religious antagonism on the part of Orthodoxy is also manifested in the terminology still used by Orthodox believers when referring to Protestants, including and Adventists by “sects” or “sectarians”. It is stated that mutual intolerance and religious antagonism can be explained by differences in worldviews and religious competition. Although in the context of world religious tolerance among scholars of the world's leading countries, such terminology to recognized Protestant denominations is unacceptable and discriminatory. However, the authors also cite positive references and responses in the media about Adventists from Orthodoxy. A positive aspect of Adventists is a thorough doctrinal system that is stable, systematic, and publicized. But the most positive response from Orthodoxy was given by Adventist teachings on the principles of a healthy lifestyle.

The July 2015 meeting of the Adventist General Conference was dominated by an often contentious debate about women’s ordination. Though founded by a female charismatic leader, Adventists were contesting women’s ordination by at least 1881, and the contemporary denomination has studied the question for more than four decades. Tension has burgeoned in recent years as some regional Seventh-day Adventist unions have ordained women despite the lack of movement-wide policy change. In July 2015, as delegates deliberated on a motion to allow each division of the world church to decide the question of women’s ordination for itself, the gathering saw an unusual degree of discord, and this disagreement about gender and women’s roles spilled over from the ordination debate into discussions of other agenda items. Despite a “No” vote on the motion, the controversy surrounding women’s ordination persists in Adventism.

This is a comparative analysis of similarities and differences between the Brazilian Adventist discourse on the 1918 Influenza pandemic – also known as the Spanish Flu – and the current Brazilian Adventist discourse on the COVID-19 pandemic. It focuses on how Adventists articulate the distinctive eschatological and sanitary elements of their narrative tradition in order to explain the two crises and to situate themselves in relation to them. The analysis corpus contains select texts published in Revista Adventista, the official bulletin of Brazilian Seventh-day Adventists, pertaining to two time periods: 1918–1920 and the first quarter of 2020. Both materials present pandemic crises as opportunities for evangelism since they display the understanding that societal values and paradigms become less impervious to religion in such conditions. But they differ in the fact that the 1918–1920 material concentrates on religious expansion and doctrine, especially emphasising the message of impending judgement of a Great Controversy metanarrative, while the 2020 material explores the medical and humanitarian aspects connected to the pandemic, transcending a purely eschatological emphasis and accommodating a concerted effort to give the readers emotional support to face the pandemic.

AbstractThis paper examines the type of music played in the Seventh Day Adventist churches in Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe. Although the Seventh Day Adventist Church in general allows the use of instruments and dance in worship, the Seventh day Adventist churches in Masvingo condemns such practices. Their music is essentially a capella. The paper contends that such a stance perpetuates the early missionary attitude that tended to denigrate African cultural elements in worship. It is argued in this paper that instrumental music and dance enriches African spirituality and that the Seventh Day Adventist Churches in Masvingo should incorporate African instruments and dance to a certain extent if they are to make significant impact on the indigenous people. It advocates mission by translation as opposed to mission by diffusion.

“… the weakest of the weak…”Ellen G. White, nee Harmon (1827-1915), is among the least known of the prophet-founders of major American religious movements. The Seventh-day Adventist prophet has received neither the celebrity nor the notoriety of Mormonism’s Joseph Smith, Shakerism’s Ann Lee, or Christian Science’s Mary Baker Eddy. Yet she deserves at least the recognition of these other sect founders. Ill, introverted, and undereducated, White ultimately asserted the most forceful influence on Seventh-day Adventism and ensured it a place among the major American sects. Her long and resourceful career as the Adventist visionary inspired the transformation of a single-minded, other-worldly, Millerite off-shoot into a complex and established denomination with wide-ranging interests in sabbatarianism, eschatology, health reform, temperance, medicine, child nurture, education, and religious liberty. Her legacy includes an impressive global network of sanitariums and hospitals and a vast educational system unparalleled in contemporary Protestantism. Abstract The early growth prospects of the American-Based Seventh-day Adventist Church in Africa were blurry because of challenges that early missionaries encountered. However, against all odds, the denomination on this continent shook off setbacks related to its difficult beginnings in the 1900s. Through the investigation of familiar and unfamiliar themes, this article seeks to raise awareness about new dynamics in the context of global Seventh-day Adventism. Adventism would not cease to be a thing of Western origin, but its future can be decisively determined by the hands of its non-Western adherents, who naturally share little of Western culture. The change in the Adventist landscape is not simply a matter of new names of Black origin being added to the church records, but of imposing new realities that necessitate a new way of life, a new vision of leadership, new strategies for mission, and new thinking accommodative of cultural shifts.

Kota Surakarta merupakan wilayah plural bagi ragam penganut agama dan kepercayaan. Ada potensi pergesekan antar pemeluk agama, dan bagi kaum minoritas seperti kelompok Gereja Masehi Advent Hari Ketujuh (GMAHK) kondisi ini adalah tantangan. GMAHK merupakan bagian organisasi transnasional berbasis agama, Seventh-day Adventist (SDA). Organisasi transnasional bagi suatu negara berpotensi mempengaruhi pola perilaku para pengikutnya dengan nilai global yang dibawanya. Dibutuhkan strategi agar dapat menyesuaikan nilai-nilai lokal dengan global, sehingga dapat menjaga eksistensinya meski sebagai kelompok minoritas. Penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana kontribusi organisasi transnasional Seventh-day Adventist memperkuat afirmasi toleransi GMAHK Kota Surakarta. Metode penelitian adalah kualitatif menggunakan studi kasus intrinsik. Pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam, FGD, observasi dan studi dokumen. Analisis dilakukan dengan pendekatan faith-based development organizations, guna melihat peran dan relasi organisasi transnasional lintas negara berbasis agama. Peneliti menemukan bahwa kontribusi SDA tampak dari esklusifitas identitas global dalam memperkuat afirmasi nilai toleransi GMAHK Surakarta tanpa mengabaikan identitas lokal. SDA membangun sistem terarah dengan mengadaptasikan nilai-nilai global organisasi dalam isu-isu lokal, membangun guideline system melalui jaringan komunikasi dan koordinasi terstruktur, menguatkan self of belonging dengan penguatan loyalitas dan fasilitasi berbagai aspek, penguatan peran perempuan melalui Bakti Wanita Advent, serta agenda interfaith dialogue dan kegiatan sosial lintas agama. Kata Kunci: Seventh-day Adventist, identitas global, identitas lokal, Surakarta, afirmasi toleransi Surakarta is a plural area for various religions and beliefs. There is the possibility of conflict between religions, which poses a challenge for minorities such as the GMAHK, as part of Seventh-day Adventist, faith-based international organization. The arrival of transnational organizations influence the behavior of their followers with global value. A strategy is needed to adjust local values into global ones to maintain their existence as a minority group. This study analyzes how the contribution of the Seventh-day Adventist strengthens the affirmation of tolerance for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Surakarta. The research method was qualitative using intrinsic case studies. Collecting data through in-depth interviews, FGD, observations and document studies. The analysis was using faith-based development organizations approach to see the roles and relations of transnational organizations across countries. The researcher found that exclusivity of global identity is strengthening affirmation of tolerance value of GMAHK Surakarta without neglecting local identity. They have directed system by adapting the organization's global values on local issues, building guideline system with structured communication and coordination network, strengthening self of belonging through loyalty and facilitation of various aspects, strengthening the role of women through Bakti Wanita Adventist, interfaith agenda, and general social activity. The emphasis on health ministry within the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) movement led to the development of sanitariums in mid-nineteenth century America. These facilities, the most notable being in Battle Creek, Michigan, initiated the development of vegetarian foods, such as breakfast cereals and analogue meats. The SDA Church still operates a handful of food production facilities around the world. The first Battle Creek Sanitarium dietitian was co-founder of the American Dietetics Association which ultimately advocated a vegetarian diet. The SDA Church established hundreds of hospitals, colleges, and secondary schools and tens of thousands of churches around the world, all promoting a vegetarian diet. As part of the ‘health message,’ diet continues to be an important aspect of the church’s evangelistic efforts. In addition to promoting a vegetarian diet and abstinence from alcohol, the SDA church has also invested resources in demonstrating the health benefits of these practices through research. Much of that research has been conducted at Loma Linda University in southern California, where there have been three prospective cohort studies conducted over 50 years. The present study, Adventist Health Study-2, enrolled 96,194 Adventists throughout North America in 2003–2004 with funding from the National Institutes of Health. Adventist Health Studies have demonstrated that a vegetarian diet is associated with longer life and better health.

Introduction: Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) emerged as a denomination in the nineteenth century amid Sunday’s observance domination. The majority of the SDA pioneers are Sunday keepers. The seventh-day Sabbath was first brought to the Millerite Adventists by Rachel Oakes. She is a member of the Seventh-day Baptist who joined the Millerite Adventists. The first time the seventh-day Sabbath was introduced in Millerite Adventists, there was upheaval and conflict. But finally, a group of Sabbatarian Adventists was formed which kept the seventh-day Sabbath. This group finally became SDA Church. The purpose of this work is to find out what were the reasons for the Adventists pioneers to accept the Sabbath. Result: This paper argued that there were four reasons why Sabbatarian Adventists received the seventh-day Sabbath. First, the Sabbatarian Adventists kept the seventh-day Sabbath because of their investigation of the Bible, which led them to abandon Sunday observance and accepted the Sabbath. Second, one of the co-founders of the SDA, Ellen G. White, confirmed that the Sabbath is related to the temple in heaven, because the Ten Commandments, including the fourth commandment, still remains there and never been eliminated. Third, the pioneers of the SDA also found that there was a connection between the Sabbath and the three angels’ messages, in which the issue will be the worship of God and its closely related to the seventh-day Sabbath. Fourth, they saw that Sabbath was related to eschatology. In this understanding, they understood that Sabbath would still be observed in the new world. Method: This paper is a historical approach using documentary research method. For each reasons, researcher utilizes primary resources. Secondary resources are employed only to see current opinions about the issue.

For the Seventh-day Adventist Church, whose doctrines are rooted in eschatological and apocalyptic theology, ecumenism is problematic. While the Church sees itself as one heir of the historic tradition of Christianity and so welcomes recognition as part of the mainstream, it also claims to be the organization through which God proclaims a special message to the modern age. Put simply, sometimes Seventh-day Adventists are happy to be part of the universal Church and at other times they claim to be members of the only true Church. Obviously, the latter, exclusivist attitude is in contradiction to the ethos of the ecumenical movement.

Libraries at Seventh-day Adventist affiliated colleges and universities collect their denominational materials exhaustively. Many use the Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LCC). The challenge is that these exhaustive collections must fit in a classification scheme based on a general collection that does not typically hold much on this topic. LCC uses BX6151-6155 for Seventh-day Adventists. Following the LCC notation without modification or expansion results in the proliferation of decimals, impeding both library users and staff. When a number of institutions share this same need, finding a standard notation they all can use is a mutual benefit. This paper reports on the development of a modification and expansion to LCC to address this need for libraries with exhaustive collections of Seventh-day Adventist books. This scheme follows a different method than the other denominational collections that have published an expanded or modified LCC to meet their purposes. The method has proven functional and collaborative efforts have made the scheme a success for libraries using it. This method may be of use to other small and highly specialized denominational collections in the LCC class BX.

The topic of the study is a component of modern scientific exploration that examines the role of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in building our multi-denominational society. In particular, the issue of determining the place and role of the Adventist Church in society and the state is important. However, today it is possible to unleash it only by summing up the accumulated experience in this field for the whole period of the history of Adventism in Ukraine. The problem of state-confessional relations is important, but it has not been given sufficient importance in terms of theoretical research, which sometimes leads to gross errors in the construction of these relations, which is not beneficial to society. Thus, it is interesting for us to experience the emergence of relations between the state and the Adventist faith in the Ukrainian lands that were part of the Russian Empire, since that is when the formation of the Adventist Church in the domestic territories began.

ABSTRACT: This article employs a content analysis of the Adventist Review to explore Seventh-day Adventist denominational change and concomitant delimitation of women's roles and expectations in the denomination. It uses Weber's theory of the religion of non-privileged classes in order to consider denominational change and attendant advocation of specific gender ideals and proscriptions for Adventist women. The paper finds that early in its history Adventism defined itself in opposition to secular society, and that in the context of this definition by distinction, Adventist women were encouraged to assume positions of public religious responsibility not available to them in secular society. Following the turn of the century and especially during the 1950s and 1960s, as Adventist culture adopted an accommodating response to other denominations and secular society, the Review promoted conventional secular notions of gender appropriate activity, relegating men to the "bread-winner" role and discouraging women from engaging in wage labor, or religious activity outside of the domestic sphere. As suggested by Weber's theory of religion of non-privileged classes, examination of the Adventist Review illustrates the way in which Adventist leadership shifted from advocating ideals inconsistent with those promulgated in the wider society, when Adventist culture most emphasized its distinction, only to later embrace secular expectations of gender when the denomination adopted a more accommodating response to other denominations and secular society.

In May of 1948 a letter from Major J. C. Thompson, chief of the Religious Affairs Section of the American Military Government in Berlin, arrived at the General Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists in Washington, D.C. Major Thompson's office was responsible for seeing that all Nazis were removed from leadership positions, and his letter was part of an ongoing correspondence about the denomination's need to come to terms with its Nazi past. The Adventist denomination, he complained, was “one of the very few in Berlin which have not cleaned house politically to date. Most of the denominations finished this task long enough ago to have forgotten about it.” The letter must have been particularly embarrassing to Adventist leaders as it went on to compare Adventists to Catholics, who “actually had little housecleaning to do because of their strong opposition during the reign of Hitler to the entire Nazi regime.”

Lucille Spence Byard is one of the most pivotal figures in the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Her rejection for medical treatment due to her race at an Adventist sanitarium on the Maryland-Washington, D.C., border in 1943 was the major catalyst for the formation of regional conferences, or Black-administered governance units, within the North American administrative structure of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. However, almost since the day Lucy Byard was refused treatment, the major details of the event have been subject to the whim of the teller, and variant versions have become embedded in church lore. What has been particularly problematic, though, is that historians have not made the effort to explore what actually happened to Byard, which would require bypassing the entrenched legends and consulting primary sources. This article reconstructs the Byard event from primary sources, allowing the participants in the event, especially those of color, to be heard. What finally emerges is Lucy Byard the person—much more than just an icon of tragedy—whose last days sparked the most effective grassroots movement in Adventist history.

Nurses’ religious beliefs influence their motivations and perspectives, including their practice of ethics in nursing care. When the impact of these beliefs is not recognized, great potential for unethical nursing care exists. Thus, this article examines how the theology of one religious tradition, Seventh-day Adventism (SDA), could affect nurses. An overview of SDA history and beliefs is presented, which explains why ‘medical missionary’ work is central to SDAs. Theological foundations that would permeate an SDA nurse’s view of the nursing metaparadigm concepts of person, health, environment (i.e. community), and nursing (i.e. service) are presented. The ethical principles guiding SDA nurses (i.e. principled, case-based, and care ethics) and the implications of these theological foundations for nurses are noted in a case study.

The focus of this study was to explore students' perceptions of success and how those perceptions may differ by sex, age, and education. Using Jensen and Towle's criteria (1991), 165 subjects qualified as “religious” out of the 247 respondents assessed. Given different theological emphases, it was hypothesized that this predominantly Seventh-day Adventist sample would perceive success differently than Jensen and Towle's sample and that there would be sex differences in religiosity which may interact with age, education, and self-reported grades. There were some sex differences in endorsement of success categories, which decreased as amount of education increased. A comparison between this predominantly Seventh-day Adventist group and Jensen and Towle's predominantly Latter-day Saint group indicates that there may be various value systems regarding success among religious denominations.

Abstract When compared to its relative success in the Southern and Western parts of Nigeria, Seventh-Day Adventism (S.D.A.) had some difficulties in establishing its mission in the North from the 1930s onward. This paper argues that there were three reasons why S.D.A. missionaries found the North difficult. First, the S.D.A. joined the Christian missionary scene in Nigeria rather late. Second, due to colonial politics, which did not favor the proselytizing aims of Christian missionaries in the North, Adventist missionaries did not find it easy to immediately establish a mission. Third, the difficult beginnings in northern Nigeria can also be attributed to the relationship between S.D.A. missionaries and other mission bodies, which tended towards rivalry, as a result of the “spheres of influence” established by the colonial government.

After the declaration of independence of our state and the beginning of the change of ideological accents in the scientific historical literature, we trace the revival of interest among contemporary religious scholars to the history of Protestantism, in particular to its later varieties - Baptism, Evangelism, Adventism, Pentecost. This is due primarily to the presence of many "vacant" topics, as well as the emergence in some academic and educational institutions areas and even schools that specialize in this area. Work began to emerge in the study of confessions, which increased the total number of religious and historical literature and prompted its systematization. The purpose of this publication is to analyze above all those works that have advanced new conceptual approaches to working out the history of Seventh-day Adventists in Ukrainian lands.

Annotation:

Background: Khat is a stimulant plant widely cultivated in East Africa and Yemen. Millions of people chew khat habitually to satiate their cravings for it. The plant generates a very high income for millions of farmers and East African governments. This study explored the economic, social, and health implications of khat use and its missiological implications. Method: This study used a qualitative approach to explore the effects of khat consumption in East Africa. Secondary data and interviews were the main sources of data. The study participants comprised Seventh-day Adventist pastors and other church members from Kenya and Ethiopia. Results: Khat chewing and production have significant socioeconomic and health implications in East African communities. Moreover, khat production and consumption negatively affect the mission of Seventh-day Adventists in the region. Conclusion: Based on the results, several suggestions are provided to address the dangers of khat cultivation and consumption.

37 Seventh Day Adventist youth were surveyed about their sex education and attitudes towards premarital sex. Analysis indicated differences between their attitudes and actual sexual behaviour. While 70% endorsed the church's prohibition on premarital sex, 54% had engaged in premarital sex.
