Objective: Following Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, this article seeks to communicate effective strategies for athletic training education Program Directors (PDs) to follow. Commentary of Covey's work and practical strategies to integrate them into PD practice and responsibilities are provided. Background: Due to a lack of professional preparation, Program Directors often relate to what they know best–working long hours to get the job accomplished. It is not uncommon for PDs to mirror the work schedules of clinically practicing certified athletic trainers. With this in mind, we propose approaching the role of PD using Stephen Covey's wisdom from his literary work, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. Practical strategies for integrating Covey's work into a PD's daily responsibilities, as well as remaining compliant with CAATE Standard expectations, are discussed.

Starting out from the notion of irradiating thought or conceptual maps (Buzan 1986, 2002), recently and explicitly tackled as an academic skill by some CLIL learner-oriented materials, this article explores the prospects for its introduction in engineering environments. It reports on a small-case study aimed to reflect on the implications of lecturers' textual choices for the note-taking habits of engineering students and ultimately for their representation of contents. The analysis of seven engineering lectures in English and Spanish in a summer seminar for EU polytechnic students, of seven condensed lectures in English by engineering teachers during an in-service training course at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and of twenty questionnaires probing into the students' note-taking routines, suggests an influence of lecturing style on note quality and evidences several lecturing deficiencies at the rhetorical level that may hamper the practice of conceptual mapping.

Interpretations of patient data are complex and diverse, contributing to a risk of low accuracy nursing diagnoses. This risk is confirmed in research findings that accuracy of nurses' diagnoses varied widely from high to low. Highly accurate diagnoses are essential, however, to guide nursing interventions for the achievement of positive health outcomes. Development of critical thinking abilities is likely to improve accuracy of nurses' diagnoses. Newer views of critical thinking serve as a basis for critical thinking in nursing. Seven cognitive skills and ten habits of mind are identified as dimensions of critical thinking for use in the diagnostic process.

The stomach contents from a male sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, first located floating a short distance off the south coast of Crete were examined. The remains within the stomach consisted almost exclusively of cephalopod mandibles, or beaks, though other material was found including a piece of rigid plastic mesh. Of the beaks found, 1714 were upper beaks and 2178 were lower beaks, that were used to identify the species. A total of seven species was identified, all of which have been previously recorded in the eastern Mediterranean though are rarely caught by man. Of these Histioteuthis bonnellii was found to be the most important species in terms of both weight and numbers. Although it must be borne in mind that the whale may not have followed its normal feeding habits prior to its premature death, an important insight into its prey items can be revealed. This is the first documented account of the stomach contents of a sperm whale from the Mediterranean, and helps to complete a global record of sperm whale diets.

Objective: Anorectal malignant melanoma is a rare tumor with poor prognosis. In this study, it was aimed to present our surgical results by reviewing the literature retrospectively in 11 patients who underwent surgery for ARMM in our clinic. Material and Methods: The patients who underwent surgery for anorectal malignant melanoma in Yuksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital between 2007-2018 were included in the study. Results: Four patients were males and seven were females. Mean age was 54.18. The tumor was in the rectum in 4 cases, in the anorectal region in 3 cases and in the anal canal in 4 cases. Wide local excision was performed in 3 cases and APR was performed in 8 cases. Four of the cases were stage I, 6 were stage II and 1 was stage III. Mean tumor size was 4.73 cm, and mean tumor depth was 13.6 mm. Mean number of metastatic lymph nodes was 10.37. Median survival was 12 months. Conclusion: Anorectal malignant melanoma is a type of tumor diagnosed in late and advanced stages due to lack of specific findings. Although ARMM is rare, when rectal bleeding, pain, hemorrhoids and changes in bowel habits are observed, ARMM should be kept in mind.

ABSTRACT Aim Globally, India accounts for the highest number of oral cancer cases. The survival rates are about 30% lower than those in developing countries. The main reason for these dismal figures is the late presentation of patients. In order to downstage oral cancer in such a scenario, screening and diagnosis at an early stage is warranted. A pragmatic approach is needed for an oral cancer screening program, hence a mobile health (mHealth) approach was used. In this approach, health workers were empowered with mobile phones with decision-based algorithm. Risk stratification of tobacco habit enables us to identify lesions associated with particular habits. Materials and methods A specific cohort of factory employees who predominantly had pure tobacco chewing habit was chosen to examine the effect of pure tobacco on oral mucosa. One thousand three hundred and fifty-seven subjects were screened in two phases. In the first phase, habits and oral lesions were identified and photographed. The photographs were remotely diagnosed by an oral medicine specialist and those subjects requiring biopsy were recalled for phase II. Cytology and biopsy were performed in phase II. Results The predominant habit was smokeless tobacco (SLT), in 582 subjects. The most commonly encountered lesion was tobacco pouch keratosis seen in 397 subjects. Biopsy was performed for 71 subjects, most cases showed hyperkeratosis and mild dysplasia. One subject had moderate dysplasia. Conclusion There was minimal alteration of tissues in our study subjects, which can be considered as low-risk. Use of mHealth empowered frontline healthcare workers to identify subjects with lesions and enabled remote diagnosis by specialist in resource-constrained settings. Clinical significance Use of mHealth enabled us have an electronic record of subject details. This data shall be used for a planned follow-up of the same cohort after 3 years. ABSTRACT: The giant anteater has specific anatomical adaptations resulting from its ant and termite feeding habits. The unique arrangement of its hyoid apparatus is essential for the ingestion of food. However, its description in the literature is based on fragments and fossils, making it difficult to determine existing anatomical details in live animals. Imaging techniques, which enable the topographical anatomy of animals to be examined noninvasively, provide essential information for the diagnosis and prognosis of diseases. The aim of this study is to describe the bone contours in the hyoid apparatus of the giant anteater by means of radiographic and tomographic images. Giant anteaters of varying ages from the Wild Animal Screening Center (CETAS-GO) were used, seven for X-ray exams and two adults for CT exams. The hyoid elements in all the animals were evaluated using the two imaging techniques, and were visualized in the cervical region of C2 to C6, which comprises three paired bones (stylohyoid, epihyoid, ceratohyoid) and one unpaired bone (basihyoid). The presence of air in the oropharynx enabled the assessment of soft tissue structures in this region, such as the epiglottis and the soft palate. CT axial sections are of limited usefulness for evaluating the hyoid bones, but enable assessments of the basihyoid bone and its characteristic V-shape. Thus, to analyze the hyoid region in anteaters based on radiographic and tomographic images, one must keep in mind that the stylohyoid, epihyoid and ceratohyoid bones are situated ventrally to the C2 to C5 vertebrae and that the basihyoid at the level of C5-C6 demarcates the transition between the nasopharynx and the trachea. The nasopharynx and oropharynx extend from C1 to C5, and the trachea begins at the level of C6.

ABSTRACT. Verbal fluency (VF) has contributed to building cognitive maps as well as differentiating healthy populations from those with dementia. Objectives: To compare the performance of healthy controls and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in two semantic VF tasks (animals/clothes) and a phonemic VF task (letter P). Also, to analyze the relationship between the frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) and VF in individuals with low educational level. Methods: Sixty-seven older adults aged 60-80 years and with 2-8 years of schooling were divided into three groups: controls (n=25), older adults with MCI (n=24), and older adults with AD (n=18). We analyzed the type, mean size, and number of clusters, switches, intersections, and returns. A post-hoc single-factor ANOVA analysis was conducted to verify differences between groups. Results: Total words in the phonemic VF and the animal category discriminated the three groups. Regarding the animal category, AD patients performed worse than controls in the total number of words, taxonomic clusters, returns, and number of words remembered. We found a moderate correlation between FRWH and total number of words in the phonemic fluency. Conclusions: Semantic (animate) and phonemic (total words) VF differentiated controls and clinical groups from each other - the phonemic component was more related to FRWH than the semantic one. The phonemic VF seems to be more related to cognitive reserve. VF tasks, considering total words and cluster analyses, are a valuable tool to test healthy and cognitively impaired older adults who have a low educational level.

Abstract Background Current evidence strongly implicates the burden of vascular risk factors (VRF) in the development of stroke, cognitive decline and dementia. This effect is mediated through several mechanisms, including amyloidogenesis, chronic neuroinflamation, cerebral perfusion and white-matter changes. Vascular risk profiling is well-embedded in stroke and cardiac services, but less so in memory services. Methods A review of established modifiable VRF (hypercholesterolemia, Body Mass Index (BMI), hypertension, HbA1c, smoking and alcohol habits) of people with mild cognitive complaints (mild cognitive impairment and subjective memory decline) in a memory service was performed. Risk factors measured in clinic were classified as: systolic ≥140mmHg / diastolic ≥90mmHg hypertension; LDL cholesterol >3mmol/l; HbA1c >39mmol/mol; weekly alcohol >21units; smoking and BMI >24.9kg/m2. Data was recorded and analysed using Microsoft Excel. Results Thirty-seven people, including 16 females (mean age 71.4, range of 49-83 years), were reviewed. 13/37 (35%) were aged ≤69 years. A total of 91 VRFs were identified in the study population. 29/37 (78%) had ≥2 VRF present. 3/37 (8%) had five VRF. 18/37 (49%) had prior history of either stroke, vascular or heart disease. Five of thirty-seven, (13.5%) and 13/37 (35%) were current and ex-smokers respectively, 2/37 (5%) consumed excess alcohol, 24/37 (65%) had elevated BMI and 11/37 (30%) had elevated LDL cholesterol. 21/37 (57%) had hypertension. Of these, 11/21 were known but poorly-controlled and 10/21 were identified de novo. All of the 32% (12/37) who had hyperglycaemia were de novo. Conclusion This study highlights the high prevalence of unidentified or poorly controlled VRF in people with mild cognitive symptoms attending a memory service. Given its importance to brain health and mitigation of future cognitive decline, a structured focus on identifying and managing these VRF in this setting is necessary. Exercise-based lifestyle programs should be embedded in post-diagnostic services for this population.

This article reports on a 2012 survey of library patrons at ATLA-affiliated libraries regarding academic reading habits and preferences. The research questions for the study were: [1] To what extent is academic reading done as e-reading?; [2] What features do participants value in e-books?; [3] What library sources do patrons want made available to them electronically? The method used in the study was an online survey. A total of 2,578 individuals took the survey in the spring of 2012. Key findings were that half of respondents regularly read journal articles on a computer screen and one in five regularly reads or listens to e-books in their academic work. Participants wanted e-books to enable them to perform keyword searches, move around quickly within the text, and annotate the text electronically. Seven out of ten participants stated that they would like libraries to provide reference works, Bible commentaries, circulating titles, and textbooks in electronic format. It appeared that the distinction between library-owned resources and those owned by an individual disappeared in the minds of many respondents. The author concludes that theological library directors should consider spending a significant proportion of their collection budget on electronic resources now, despite ongoing difficulties that academic publishers face in making a transition to digital publishing. The author also interprets findings in light of Fred Davis’ model of technology acceptance.

Gastric and duodenal biopsies from 90 patients with various acid peptic disorders - reflux esophagitis (n=24), gastric ulcer (n=13), duodenal ulcer (n=47) and nonulcer dyspepsia (n=6) - were examined. Seven patients with minimal dyspeptic symptoms and an endoscopically and histologically normal stomach and duodenum served as controls. Immunoperoxidase staining for gastrin-producing G cells, somatostatin-producing D cells and serotonin-producing EC cells was carried out on fundic, antral and duodenal biopsies, and was quantified using a Zeiss MOP Videoplan using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique of Sternberger. In the gastric antrum, a G:D:EC cell ratio of approximately 1.6:1:1 was observed. In the duodenum the corresponding ratio was 1:1:2.4. No significant differences were observed within any of the major diagnostic categories. Patient age, sex, duration of symptoms, smoking habits, alcohol consumption and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use had no effect on endocrine cell densities. Reduced G cell density in the descending duodenum was observed in the presence of mild duodenitis in four patients. In four patients with evidence of antral intestinal metaplastic changes, a significant increase in duodenal G cell densities was found. These results suggest that a change in the number of G, D or EC cells does not play a primary role in the pathophysiology of acid peptic disorders in the majority of patients.

This report is based on twenty-eight (26%) of 107 patients included in a protocol for prospective evaluation of elective peritoneo-venous shunting for intractable ascites in cirrhosis. These patients had no other procedures and survived more than 5 years after the operation. All patients were free of ascites except one in whom it was mild. One patient refused follow-up. Shunt patency was assessed in 23 patients. In 14 patients (60.9%), the shunt was obstructed and the superior vena cava was occluded in 5 of them. In 9 patients (39.1%), the shunt was still functioning. No clinical or biological parameters differentiated these two groups of patients. Of the 24 patients who were alcoholics, 2 abstained completely and 20 significantly reduced their drinking habits. In 25 patients, the Pugh's score improved and was A at the time of the study. Seven patients (25.9%) developed a malignant tumor of the oro-pharynx or digestive tract, all other patients were alive and in good health. This study suggests that patients with intractable ascites treated by a peritoneo-venous shunt may survive for a long period. In patients abstaining from heavy drinking, it may function as a therapeutic bridge permitting spontaneous improvement of liver function. The risk of supervening neoplasms suggests that a continuous follow-up of these patients is warranted.

Introduction: Interatrial communication is associated with an increased risk of decompression sickness (DCS) in scuba diving. It has been proposed that there would be a decreased risk of DCS after closure of the interatrial communication, i.e., persistent (patent) foramen ovale (PFO). However, the clinical evidence supporting this is limited. Methods: Medical records were reviewed to identify Swedish scuba divers with a history of DCS and catheter closure of an interatrial communication. Thereafter, phone interviews were conducted with questions regarding diving and DCS. All Swedish divers who had had catheter-based PFO-closure because of DCS were followed up, assessing post-closure diving habits and recurrent DCS. Results: Nine divers, all with a PFO, were included. Eight were diving post-closure. These divers had performed 6,835 dives (median 410, range 140–2,200) before closure, and 4,708 dives (median 413, range 11–2,000) after closure. Seven cases with mild and 10 with serious DCS symptoms were reported before the PFO closure. One diver with a small residual shunt suffered serious DCS post-closure; however, that dive was performed with a provocative diving profile. Conclusion: Divers with PFO and DCS continue to dive after PFO closure and this seems to be fairly safe. Our study suggests a conservative diving profile when there is a residual shunt after PFO closure, to prevent recurrent DCS events.

Over the years, there has been little attempt made to collect, organize, and codify either the interdisciplinary habits of mind or the pedagogies used to promote them. Teaching interdisciplinary courses requires instilling interdisciplinary habits of mind by using strategies for active learning and reflective liberal thinking. This publication emerged from discussions and surveys used to evaluate interdisciplinary habits of mind and pedagogies which focused on four categories: drawing, modifying, integrating, and evaluating insights drawn from different disciplines. Prior to face-to-face discussions, surveys were sent to 75 expert faculty who had great experience teaching IDS courses. The survey and follow-up discussion examined the four categories of habits of mind one by one, identifying pedagogies useful in promoting any or all of the habits of mind within each category, and how each pedagogy works to clarify how it produces such habits of mind. The breakout discussions were observed, transcribed, and analyzed throughout the meetings. After analysis, the authors came to three conclusive inferences: (1) Course organization and structure have an important albeit indirect effect on pedagogy, (2) traditional pedagogies have an important role to play in teaching interdisciplinary courses, and (3) active learning is especially important in interdisciplinary pedagogy, not just a supplement.

The purpose of this research was to determine the extent to which pre-service teachers were self-directed before implementing habits of mind as a teaching strategy. The researchers purposively focused on first to fourth-year BEd students. The sample consisted of 277 students who volunteered. A concurrent mixed-method triangulation approach was applied. Even though the students overestimated themselves in Williamson's self-rating scale of self-directed learning, the habits of mind positively affected developing various aspects of the self-directed learning process. Pre-service teachers recognised the importance of applying habits of mind, which will help them use their new knowledge in classroom practices and promote self-directed learning. Therefore, it is recommended that the future training of pre-service teachers be scaffolded around the habits of mind that will contribute to developing the teachers' ways of thinking, self-directed learning, and competencies. In addition, several habits of mind will support teachers in utilising and/or adjusting their prior learning to be open to or contribute to the construction of new knowledge. It is also recommended that habits of mind be infused into the current BEd curriculum in order to foster self-directed learning.

<p><em>One of the major problems faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners is the difficulty of decoding words and their meanings. While some are very early discouraged by the large amount of words to know before having a good command of this language, others struggle to progress in learning it because of the complexity of some words due to the multiplicity of their meanings. To overcome this problem, the author of this paper, after several years of research, tried to set up the listening in mute (Note 1) (low volume listening or soft listening) approach which refers to the action of the subconscious that has the capability of assimilating the language instead of the learner ((his or her) (Note 2) conscious mind) while the latter is sleeping in an environment where the English language is spoken in a low voice by native speakers. </em></p><p><em>Therefore, to examine the effectiveness of this approach, seven Beninese intermediate EFL learners were voluntarily recruited from three English Language Clubs (Note 3). It was recommended to each of them to take the habit of listening to a radio with a reduced volume in a low voice tuned to a channel broadcasting English programs before going to bed at night. The results were very impressive. Through individual interviews and focus groups, participants revealed that their six-month experience in these programs has helped them develop many skills such as listening, meaning-decoding and pronunciation.</em></p>
