This work presents a methodology to coarsen subchannel models to accelerate largescale Serpent2-SUBCHANFLOW calculations. The method is based on first building a fully detailed subchannel model and then combining subchannels into larger channels with condensed hydraulic parameters. To quantify the accuracy and performance of this scheme, a full-core VVER-1000 problem is simulated with Serpent2-SUBCHANFLOW using two types of coarsened models, as well as a standard subchannel model as reference.

In this work, the objective is to perform an uncertainty analysis on a MYRRHA -Rev.1.6 irradiation cycle study, being applied to a depletion scenario of a single fresh fuel assembly while assuming reflective boundary conditions. Such analysis is statistically based on the application of Wilk’s method of building tolerance limits after 100 depletion calculations were performed with the SERPENT2 code. Due to the computational burden of such type of simulations, this propagation of nuclear data covariances study (allowed by the fast computational performance of SERPENT2) was done at constant power, constant flux and, in a final exercise, at constant power with the addition of fission yield uncertainties (all of these cases employed ENDF/B-VII.1 data). It was observed that while depleting at constant power, the statistical variation of key fission products such as 148Nd is almost not present because of the normalization factor applied to the flux. In contrast, the irradiation at constant flux reveals dependence on burnup. Finally, the added fission yield uncertainties make clear the fact that they directly impact the degree of final uncertainty computed for fission products exemplified by 148Nd and 135Xe important for burnup estimation and reactor operation, respectively.

The Sodium Fast Reactor is one of the most technologically developed Gen-IV reactors, which can close the nuclear fuel cycle. Its criticality safety directly depends on the sodium void effect and Doppler constant. Hence the knowledge of their local distribution is important. These coefficients can be mapped by deterministic or Monte Carlo codes, where the latter provide higher modeling accuracy, but are also strongly computer demanding and subject to stochastic noise issues. In this study, the void effect and Doppler constant have been enumerated for the ESFR core by Serpent2 and ERANOS2 codes, preserving a six-batch operation scheme. The Serpent code was coupled to the Python script BBP to simulate batch-wise operation in a radially infinite inner core configuration; the ERANOS code was applied to the whole core geometry and the batch-wise operation was simulated by the EQL3D routine. Sodium void effect and Doppler constant spatial maps with different levels of refinement were produced, as well as the time evolution of the integral coefficients during the transition from initial cycle to equilibrium cycle. Both codes indicate deterioration of these coefficients during the transition. The equilibrium cycle performance of the inner core zone from the ERANOS calculation was compared with Serpent results and they showed reasonable agreement. For very fine mapping, the Monte Carlo method employed was computationally very demanding and the enumerated effect was lower than the stochastic noise. In general, the Serpent model practically excludes modeling assumptions and produces reliable results for reasonably sized maps, which can be combined if needed with the high spatial resolution results obtained by ERANOS simulations.

A perícope das serpentes no deserto destaca-se do conjunto de escritos que recorrem ao simbolismo da serpente, ao utilizar esse elemento potencialmente enganoso para a fé de Israel, ambivalente. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender o simbolismo da serpente em Nm 21,4-9, a partir de uma análise do texto e da possível influência por parte dos egípcios e povos do Antigo Oriente Próximo. A análise narrativa destacou o texto como um enredo de conflito-solução no drama vivido pelo povo. Na ótica do conflito, foram levados em conta os aspectos antropológicos e culturais do simbolismo da serpente e seu alcance teológico. A interpretação favoreceu a compreensão da dimensão pedagógica de Deus diante da necessidade de conversão do povo que estava na etapa final da caminhada do deserto, prestes a entrar na terra de Canaã. Dentro da economia da revelação, o autor dá um novo significado à serpente levantada na haste. No início do relato, fora instrumento de castigo expresso na mordedura que causou muitas mortes; no fim, torna-se sinal de salvação. Assim, mediante o sinal, o mesmo Deus que castiga é o que está sempre pronto a oferecer uma nova chance àquele que volta seus olhos para Ele.Palavras-chave: Exegese. Números. Símbolo. Serpente. Conflitos.AbstractThe pericope of the wilderness’ snakes is highlighted in the set of writings using the symbol of the serpent, for this symbol is potentially doubtful to the faith of Israel, ambivalent. Therefore, this paper aims to comprehend the symbolism of the serpent in Numbers 21,4-9, through a text analysis and a study of the possible influence of Egyptians and the nations from Ancient Near Eastern. The narrative analysis highlighted the text as a plot of conflict-solution in the drama lived by the people. In that conflict approach, it was considered the anthropological and cultural features of the serpent symbolism and its theological range. The interpretation favored the comprehension of the pedagogic dimension of God before the necessity of people’s conversion, once they were in the final stage of the wilderness’ pilgrimage, being about to enter at the land of Canaan. In line with the economy of revelation, the author gives a new meaning to the serpent raised in the rod. In the beginning of the report, it was an instrument of punishment expressed in the bite that caused a lot of deaths; at the end, it becomes a sign of salvation. Thus, through this signal, the same God who punishes is the One who is always ready to offer a new chance to those whose eyes turn upon Him.Keywords: Exegesis. Numbers. Symbol. Serpent. Conflicts.

This work presents the results for a coupled neutronic-thermalhydraulic-thermomechanic pin-level depletion calculation of a PWR fuel assembly using Serpent2-SUBCHANFLOW-TRANSURANUS. This tool is based on a semi-implicit depletion scheme with pin-by-pin feedback, mesh-based field exchange and an object-oriented software design. The impact of including fuel-performance capabilities is analyzed, with focus on high-burnup effects. The treatment of the Doppler feedback to the neutronics is examined as well, in particular the use of radial fuel-temperature profiles or radially averaged values.

The present article describes the preliminary validation study of simulated in-core and reflector n eutron spectra in preparation of oncoming experimental programs in the zeropower reactor CROCUS at EPFL. For this purpose, a set of activation foils were irradiated at three characteristic positions in the CROCUS reactor, and the subsequent activities were analyzed via γ spectrometry. The experimental setup was then modeled with the Monte Carlo neutron transport code Serpent2 and associated with an analysis tool to include the effect of the reactor power history during experiments. The comparison of calculated and measured reaction rates (C/E) indicates a general consistency (at 2σ) between calculated and measured spectra. However, offsets of C/E values were observed in (n, γ) reactions, up to 18% for 115In and 8% for 63Cu dosimeters. This could be caused by an unexpected isotopic composition, uncertainties in nuclear data, or the spectrometry analysis. In addition, a 100-groups spectrum unfolding was performed using the experimentally determined reaction rates and the Serpent2 spectra as the prior knowledge. The unfolded spectra were mainly adjusted in the thermal and fast ranges, while few modifications w ere m ade i n t he e pithermal r egion d ue t o the low contribution of epithermal neutrons in activation processes. Moreover, within energy groups where the capture reactions show resonant behavior, flux depletion (up to 38% as compared to the prior spectra) is observed due to the absence of self-shielding effect in the unfolding process. For this purpose, an unfolding method based on energy groups weighting is developed and tested.

This paper presents the benchmark evaluation of the new ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear library for the OECD/NEA Medium 1000 MWth Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR). There are 2 SFR cores: metallic fueled (MET-1000) and oxide fueled (MOX-1000). The continuous-energy Monte Carlo Serpent2 code was used as the calculation tool. Various nuclear libraries such as ENDF/B-VII.1 and JENDL-4.0 were included to be compared with the newest ENDF/B-VIII.0. The evaluated parameters are k,βeff, sodium void reactivity (∆ρNa), Doppler constant (∆ρDoppler), and control rod worth (∆ρCR).

The PETALE experimental programme in the CROCUS reactor intends to provide integral measurements to constrain stainless steel nuclear data. This article presents the tools and the methodology developed to design and optimize the experiments, and its operating principle. Two acceleration techniques have been implemented in the Serpent2 code to perform a Total Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation using variance reduction and correlated sampling technique. Their application to the estimation of the expected reaction rates in dosimeters is also discussed, together with the estimation of the impact of the nuisance parameters of aluminium used in the experiment structures.

The call for a new paradigm is loud and clear and consistent with postmodern methods. They are no gold standard to be applied to all investigations; no master narrative to be defended. Interdisciplinary, as the author tries to demonstrate, can mean not only cooperation among disciplines, but also the use of a variety of often discipline favoured methods by a single investigator or a team of investigators whose location within a particular ‘discipline’ is both historically contingent and likely dated in terms of its usefulness. Likewise, the use of multilevel considerations means that the diversity of methods and approaches at various levels of abstraction are necessary to begin any study of religious phenomena in their immense complexity. This study of serpent handlers focuses upon archival research; hermeneutical explorations of textual criticism of the Bible; ethnography linked to videotapes; phenomenological interviews analyzed in terms of a hermeneutical method that reveals the meaningfulness of handling serpents, being anointed, and the experience of near death from serpent bites. The author is committed to exploring the meaning of serpent handling from personal and cultural perspectives, and also takes into account psychological theories to link the symbolic and sign value of serpents that further does justice to the power of the serpent to elicit genuine religious experiences and to serve as an apologetic for a tradition that has been maligned and misunderstood by lay persons and scholars alike.

Durante um período de 19 meses (março 1986 a setembro 1987) foram estudados 22 casos de acidentes ofídicos causados por Bothrops moojeni na região de São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, nos quais o tamanho da serpente foi sistematicamente medido. Foram constituídos dois grupos de pacientes de acordo com o tamanho da serpente: grupo I - 9 casos de serpentes pequenas (30 a 53 cm) e grupo II - 13 casos de serpentes grandes (80 a 147 cm). Os resultados mostraram: 1. efeitos locais iniciais - dor e edema - mais leves no grupo I; 2. tempo de coagulação prolongado/incoagulável levemente mais freqüente no grupo I; 3. complicações locais - necrose, infecção e síndrome compartimentai - exclusivamente, e em mais da metade dos casos do grupo II, apesar da terapia com antiveneno ter sido mais rápida e em doses maiores nesse grupo. Conclui-se que as serpentes Bothrops moojeni maiores apresentam grande incremento nas suas ações locais - edema, necrose e infecção secundária - e leve perda em sua ação coagulante.

Serpentes não são componentes usuais na dieta de invertebrados, tornando o hábito de ofiofagia por tarântulas incomum na natureza. Existem poucos estudos sobre a biologia das serpentes do sudoeste da Amazônia quando comparadas com as partes centrais e orientais deste mesmo bioma. Pesquisas sobre dietas de vertebrados podem ser realizadas, além das observações de eventos de predação, com a dissecação do conteúdo, porém invertebrados como as tarântulas não retêm partes do corpo das presas durante a digestão e consomem frequentemente apenas material corporal liquefeito. É relatado no presente trabalho uma observação de predação por uma aranha Acanthoscurria sp. sobre uma serpente Drymoluber dichrous em um fragmento de floresta na área rural da cidade de Porto Velho, no sul da Amazônia brasileira, estado de Rondônia. Este relato é considerado um evento raro pois aponta um hábito alimentar incomum para aranhas do gênero Acanthoscurria. Durante uma pesquisa de campo, os autores desta comunicação se depararam com este registro. Acreditava-se que a serpente estava tentando se abrigar, e quando removida, constatou-se que estava em processo de digestão extracorpórea pela aranha. Acredita-se que acidentalmente, a serpente de pequeno porte tentou se abrigar na toca habitada pela aranha e foi surpreendida. Registros deste tipo expandem o conhecimento sobre os hábitos alimentares das aranhas do gênero Acanthoscurria e são importantes para aumentar o conhecimento sobre os predadores das serpentes da espécie Drymoluber dichrous.

ABSTRACT Here we test the hypothesis, first suggested by L. Sprague De Camp in 1968, that “After Mesozoic reptiles became well-known, reports of sea serpents, which until then had tended towards the serpentine, began to describe the monster as more and more resembling a Mesozoic marine reptile like a plesiosaur or a mosasaur.” This statement generates a number of testable specific hypotheses, namely: 1) there was a decline in reports where the body was described as serpent or eel-like; 2) there was an increase in reports with necks (a feature of plesiosaurs) or reports that mentioned plesiosaurs; and 3) there was an increase in mosasaur-like reports. Over the last 200 years, there is indeed evidence of a decline in serpentiform sea serpent reports and an increase in the proportion of reports with necks but there is no evidence for an increase in the proportion of mosasaur-like reports. However, witnesses only began to unequivocally compare sea serpents to prehistoric reptiles in the late nineteenth century, some fifty years after the suggestion was first made by naturalists.

Tradicionalmente, a serpente (hebraico nāḥāš) tem sido interpretada como um símbolo negativo, em algumas fontes como o veículo usado pelo tentador para causar a queda da humanidade. Essa visão negativa da serpente tem sido questionada recentemente de novo. Dois pontos principais são levantados com relação à narrativa de Gênesis 2–3. Primeiro, na literatura e no material iconográfico do Antigo Oriente Próximo, serpentes funcionam como símbolos positivos, de vida e de sabedoria. Segundo, argumenta-se que a narrativa de Gênesis 2–3 não oferece indicações de que a serpente deva ser interpretada de modo negativo. O presente artigo argumenta contra essa postura recente e mostra que, tanto da perspectiva do material do Antigo Oriente Próximo e da narrativa própria, a serpente é melhor interpretada como um símbolo negativo.

Acidentes ofídicos foram registrados em dez comunidades ribeirinhas do baixo rio Purus através de entrevista às vítimas. Os ribeirinhos responderam perguntas sobre a percepção ambiental da ecologia das serpentes envolvidas nos acidentes. O tamanho das serpentes e a altura da mordida no corpo foram estimados com fita métrica. A correspondência entre os nomes locais e científicos das serpentes foi levantada utilizando descrições e imagens das espécies. Para outras 17 comunidades dados adicionais do número de famílias com vítimas de acidentes ofídicos foram avaliados através do diagnóstico sócio-ambiental da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Piagaçu-Purus. Foram entrevistados 18 ribeirinhos e registrados 28 acidentes ofídicos em cinco comunidades. O número de vítimas por comunidade não teve relação com o tamanho da população. O número de famílias com vítimas foi maior em comunidades maiores (r²= 0,444; p= 0,003). Aproximadamente 88% das mordidas foram nos membros inferiores. Não houve relação do tamanho estimado da serpente com a altura da mordida. A maioria dos acidentes ocorreu de dia (82,14%) e no período de cheia (64,28%) na época de exploração da castanha-da-Amazônia e da madeira pelos ribeirinhos, atividades que despendem maior tempo na floresta. Um único caso de morte por acidente ofídico foi registrado. A serpente Bothrops atrox foi à espécie mais relacionada com acidentes na região. O reconhecimento das serpentes pelos ribeirinhos revelou várias sinonímias, com 20 nomes locais atribuídos a 33 espécies. Na percepção dos ribeirinhos as serpentes B. atrox e Lachesis muta foram às espécies mais temidas e diferem no comportamento de ataque.

Cryptosporidium é um protozoário encontrado em uma grande variedade de espécies animais como responsável por casos de gastrite e enterite, porém com epidemiologia pouco conhecida em animais silvestres. A presente investigação teve como objetivo avaliar a prevalência de Cryptosporidium serpentis em lavado gástrico de serpentes mantidas em cativeiro no serpentário do Instituto Butantan (São Paulo, Brasil). A coleta foi realizada uma semana após alimentação, evitando, assim, a regurgitação devido à manipulação. Foram realizados esfregaços do sedimento do lavado gástrico, obtido por centrifugação, corados pela técnica de coloração de Kinyoun. Parte do sedimento foi submetido à técnica de RFLP-PCR para identificação da espécie de Cryptosporidium. O serpentário é dividido em três seções, por espécie - a primeira com oito jibóias (Boa constrictor amarali), a segunda com dez jararacas (Bothropoides jararaca) e a última com sete cascavéis (Caudisona durissa). A prevalência de C. serpentis encontrada neste estudo para as serpentes C. durissa, B. jararaca e Boa c. amarali, foi de 57,14% (04/07), 40% (04/10) e 37,5% (03/08), respectivamente, revelando importante ocorrência desse protozoário em serpentes de cativeiro. Apesar da alta prevalência encontrada, apenas as jiboias apresentaram sintomas como perda de peso e regurgitação, refletindo uma sensibilidade diferente da espécie para C. serpentis.

AbstractOne mature female specimen of serpent eel Ophisurus serpens (Linnaeus, 1758) was caught by long line by a professional fisherman at a depth of about 45 m from Ece Bight, Saros Bay, north Aegean Sea on 15 February 2016. The species was previously reported without any morphometric and meristic characters from Saros Bay. Some biological characters, such as age and diameters of otolith and oocytes, are also given. In this study, the detailed morphomeristic features, which can contribute to the taxonomic studies of serpent eel from Turkish Seas, are presented.

Abstract The Physiologus is a patristic text containing allegorical interpretations of animals. This article examines the Greek, Latin, and Syriac reception history of the serpent material from the Physiologus and concludes that while Greek and Latin authors repeated serpent material from the Physiologus, John the Solitary and Isaac of Nineveh, in the Syriac tradition, furthered the allegorical sense of this text by adding an ascetical layer of interpretation. In particular, they both use the serpent material from the Physiologus to explain the transformation from the outer man to the inner man. Two additional conclusions are offered. First, this article shows that the Physiologus became a standard resource for a “redeem the snake” tradition that emerged sometime in the fourth and fifth centuries due to a renewed interest in classical zoology and due to an increase in biblical commentary on Matt 10:16, where Jesus encourages his followers to be as wise as serpents. Second, this article shows that some of the serpent analogies from the Physiologus circulated independently from the rest in a no-longer-extant form of the Physiologus or else as part of a separate work, possibly another natural history compendium. This conclusion has repercussions for dating the Physiologus.

A high-leakage core has been known to be a challenging problem not only for a two-step homogenization approach but also for a direct heterogeneous approach. In this paper the DIMPLE S06 core, which is a small high-leakage core, has been analyzed by a direct heterogeneous modeling approach and by a two-step homogenization modeling approach, using contemporary code systems developed for reactor core analysis. The focus of this work is a comprehensive comparative analysis of the conventional approaches and codes with a small core design, DIMPLE S06 critical experiment. The calculation procedure for the two approaches is explicitly presented in this paper. Comprehensive comparative analysis is performed by neutronics parameters: multiplication factor and assembly power distribution. Comparison of two-group homogenized cross sections from each lattice physics codes shows that the generated transport cross section has significant difference according to the transport approximation to treat anisotropic scattering effect. The necessity of the ADF to correct the discontinuity at the assembly interfaces is clearly presented by the flux distributions and the result of two-step approach. Finally, the two approaches show consistent results for all codes, while the comparison with the reference generated by MCNP shows significant error except for another Monte Carlo code, SERPENT2.

Materiais colhidos das presas, das bainhas das presas e do veneno de 15 Bothrops jararaca recém-capturadas, aparentemente saudáveis, foram submetidos a exame bacterioscópico e cultura aeróbia a anaeróbia. As bactérias mais freqüentemente isoladas foram os estreptococos do grupo D (1.2 serpentes), Enterobacter sp. (6), Providencia rettgeri (6), Providencia sp. (4), Escherichia coli (4), Morganella morganii (3) e Clostridium sp. (5). Como estas bactérias são semelhantes às encontradas nos abscessos de pacientes picados por serpentes do gênero Bothrops, é válido considerar a possibilidade de que bactérias da boca da serpente sejam inoculadas no momento da picada e, encontrando condições favoráveis de multiplicação, causem infecção.

A Hydrodynastes giga, (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854) vulgarmente conhecida como surucucu-do-pantanal, é uma serpente de grande porte, que ocorre no norte, centro-oeste, sudeste e sul do Brasil e que pode ser parasitada por ectoparasitos como os carrapatos do gênero Amblyomma. Em dezembro de 2007 foram coletados manualmente três carrapatos de uma serpente H. gigas no pantanal de Miranda, MS, Brasil (19º51'-19º58'S; 56º17'-56º24'W). Os carrapatos foram armazenados e enviados para o Laboratório de Parasitologia do Hospital Veterinário da ULBRA, Canoas, RS, onde foi realizada a identificação de três machos da espécie Amblyomma dissimile. A presente nota faz o primeiro relato de A. dissimile parasitando serpentes da espécie H. gigas no pantanal de Miranda, MS, Brasil.

Abstrak Algoritma kriptografi dapat digunakan untuk mengamankan citra. Salah satu algoritma kriptografi yang dapat digunakan untuk mengenkripsi citra adalah algoritma Serpent. Namun, algoritma Serpent memerlukan proses enkripsi dan dekripsi yang lama. Selain itu, pengenkripsian saja tidaklah cukup karena akan menimbulkan kecurigaan sehingga informasi akan rentan dicuri. Maka diperlukan teknik steganografi seperti metode Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT). Citra rahasia akan dienkripsi terlebih dahulu dengan menggunakan metode Modified Serpent, dimana modifikasi Serpernt mengubah proses transformasi substitusi byte (DES S-box) menjadi list bilangan prima 257 yang memiliki 128 generator untuk digunakan sebagai kunci di setiap putarannya. Pada proses penyisipan dengan metode IWT, perlu ditentukan posisi bit dan piksel pada cover image yang akan disisipkan sebuah pesan. Untuk menentukan posisi tersebut, maka digunakanlah fungsi chaos. Setelah itu, dapat dilakukan proses ekstraksi terhadap citra stego yang dihasilkan pada proses penyisipan untuk memperoleh kembali bit yang tersimpan didalamnya. Kumpulan bit tersebut dapat didekripsi sehingga akan diperoleh kembali citra rahasia semula.

Apesar da importância dos acidentes ofídicos na Saúde Pública, são relativamente poucas as pesquisas realizadas sobre esse tema no Brasil. Devido aos poucos estudos sobre ofidismo na Amazônia e especialmente no estado do Acre, trabalhos epidemiológicos são de grande relevância. Esse estudo apresenta a lista de serpentes peçonhentas e aspectos epidemiológicos dos acidentes ofídicos em Cruzeiro do Sul, região do Alto Juruá (Acre), verificando quais gêneros de serpentes são responsáveis pelos envenenamentos e aspectos que envolvem o acidente e o atendimento hospitalar. Os dados epidemiológicos foram coligidos a partir do SINAN (Sistema de Informações de Agravos de Notificação), no setor de vigilância epidemiológica do Hospital Regional do Juruá, no município de Cruzeiro do Sul. Sete espécies de serpentes peçonhentas foram registradas nesse município: três viperídeos (Bothrops atrox, Bothriopsis bilineata e Lachesis muta) e quatro elapídeos (Micrurus hemprichii, M. lemniscatus, M. remotus and M. surinamensis). Durante o período de dois anos (agosto de 2007 a julho de 2009) foram registrados 195 casos de acidentes ofídicos. Cinquenta e um por cento dos acidentes foi classificado como laquético (Lachesis), seguido pelo botrópico (Bothrops e Bothriopsis) com 38% e crotálico (Crotalus) com 2%. Em 9% dos casos o gênero da serpente envolvida não foi informado. A maioria dos acidentes envolveu indivíduos adultos do gênero masculino em área rural, afetados principalmente nos membros inferiores. Os casos ocorreram mais frequentemente nos meses de novembro a abril, coincidindo com os maiores níveis pluviométricos. A maioria dos acidentes foi atribuída equivocadamente à serpente L. muta, tendo sido provavelmente causados por B. atrox.

Este estudo avaliou o nível de conhecimento de uma população rural sobre a fauna de serpentes no sul do Brasil. Foram aplicados questionários à comunidade rural do município de Novo Hamburgo, totalizando 50 entrevistados, durante os meses de julho e setembro do ano de 2012. Durante a pesquisa foram testados conhecimentos dos moradores sobre as diferentes espécies de serpentes que ocorrem nos locais, e suas características biológicas bem como a habilidade desses moradores em reconhecê-las. Dentreos entrevistados a maioria possui forte ligação com o meio rural, baixa escolaridade e conhecimento deficiente sobre a fauna de serpentes. Apesar da alta riqueza de espécies de serpentes que ocorrem na região, cada morador soube citar em menos do que quatro espécies. Além disso, as mais citadas foram às peçonhentas (como a coral verdadeira, Micrurus sp, e a jararaca, Bothrops sp.), as espécies mais abundantes ou mais facilmente observáveis como a cobra-cipó (Philodryas olfersii). Além disso, a maioria dos entrevistados acredita que a ação correta ao encontrar uma serpente no campo é matá-la. Algumas serpentes não peçonhentas foram confundidas com peçonhentas como, por exemplo, Sybnomorphus ventrimaculatus e Philodryas patagoniensis, Xenodon merremi. Desse modo, os dados revelam que a população rural não possui uma boa compreensão sobre a diversidade importância dada serpentes sendo necessárias ações de educação ambiental a respeito da importância em se preservar esses animais.

As many sightings of purported sea-serpents are now recognized to have been misidentified cetaceans, this anecdotal literature can provide a valuable resource for extending inferences about whale biology backward in time. For example, a re-interpretation of the 1857 sighting of a “sea-serpent” seen off Cape Town suggests that the unidentified marine object was probably an animal, likely a cetacean, observed entangled in fishing gear or other maritime debris. This is one of the earliest cases of pre-plastic entanglement, and suggests the problem has a much longer environmental history than what is commonly believed.

Introduction. L’envenimation ophidienne constitue un problème de santé publique, social et économique dans les régions tropicales et subtropicales. Le cout onéreux des sérums antivenimeux rend le recours à ce traitement, qui reste pourtant le seul cliniquement approuvé, inaccessible à la majorité de la population dans ces pays. Pour y faire face, les habitants de ces régions ont donc souvent recours à des plantes reconnues comme médicinales par les connaissances traditionnelles. Le présent travail se propose de faire une synthèse de l’état des connaissances aussi bien traditionnelles que scientifiques sur les morsures de serpents et les plantes anti-morsure et antivenin de serpent à travers le monde. Il vise à la constitution d’une base de données des espèces de plantes utilisées pour prévenir et guérir les morsures de serpents et à la mise en évidence de potentielles futures pistes de recherche pour une valorisation de leur potentiel pharmaceutique. Littérature. La présente revue systématique a utilisé les bases de données Agora et Google Scholar comme moteurs de recherche pour recenser, à travers des critères d’inclusion et d’exclusion bien définis, toutes les études pertinentes portant sur les morsures de serpents et les plantes utilisées pour leur prévention ou traitement. Conclusions. La quasi-totalité des cas de morsures de serpents rapportées dans la littérature scientifique provient des pays chauds et/ou du Sud. Elles y constituent une maladie négligée parce qu’elles ne font pas objet de l’attention qu’elles méritent de la part des autorités et organismes en charge de la santé publique de ces pays. Cependant, 66 espèces de plantes regroupées en 31 familles sont utilisées pour prévenir la morsure des serpents et 1 127 espèces de plantes appartenant à 176 familles le sont pour le traitement des morsures de serpents dans le monde. Bien que l’efficacité de certaines de ces plantes ait été mise scientifiquement en évidence, des études pharmacologiques approfondies doivent encore être menées pour valider leur utilisation en vue de contribuer à améliorer le bien-être des communautés, et surtout les communautés rurales des pays en voie de développement.

Introduction : La morsure de serpent est un problème de santé publique et fait partie des pathologies négligées selon l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS). L’objectif était d’évaluer la prise en charge des morsures de serpent en milieu rural. Matériel et méthodes : Il s’agissait d’une étude prospective qui s’est déroulée du 1er Janvier au 31 Décembre 2020 dans l’aire du centre de santé communautaire et universitaire (CSCom-U) de Ségué. Résultats : Nous avons enregistré dans l’aire de santé de Ségué 25 cas de morsure dont 10 cas (40%) ont été pris en charge au centre de santé et 15 (60%) dans la communauté. La tranche d’âge 15 à 30 ans était la plus touchée (40%), le sexe masculin était de 64% et les cultivateurs étaient les plus touchés avec 36% des cas. Les facteurs à risque pour la morsure étaient la brousse (76%), la saison des pluies (64%) et les travaux champêtres (40%). Nous avons enregistré 100% de guérison dont un seul cas avec séquelle qui avait été traité traditionnellement. Conclusion : Il ressort que la morsure de serpents est un évènement assez négligé dans nos programmes de santé, très souvent les victimes font recours aux soins traditionnels, or l’utilisation du sérum antivenimeux est le traitement de choix. La disponibilité au niveau local des sérums anti venimeux (SAV), la formation continue des agents de santé, et l’éducation de la population doivent être de mise pour améliorer la prise en charge communautaire des envenimations par morsure de serpent. Pressurized water reactors are typically surrounded in the radial direction by neutron reflectors made from stainless steel and water. These reflectors decrease neutron leakage and provide protection of pressure vessel from fast neutrons damaging its integrity. Such a radial reflector influences multiplication factor of the core and distribution of neutron flux and fission power inside the core. All these effects can be analyzed by full-core simulations using macroscopic constants. Methodology for generation of the macroscopic constants for non-fuel regions will be tested for new stainless steel reflectors at the VR-1 reactor. Rods from SS 304l material will be used for construction of radial reflectors for the VR-1 reactor. They will be design to generate sufficient measurable response in selected core characteristics. The study is focused on core power distribution and reactivity worth of absorbing rods in a VR-1 reactor core. The core typically consists of about 20 IRT-4M fuel assemblies and seven absorbing rods UR-70. Replacing water surrounding the core by several reflector assemblies containing stainless steel will influence leakage and distribution of neutrons inside the core. The current analysis deals with local effects and employs the sensitivity study to discover the nature of reflectors’ impact on the reactor core. These effects were studied even for several past VR-1 reactor core configurations. All calculations were carried out in Serpent2 Monte-Carlo code with various evaluated libraries: ENDF/B-VII.1, ENDF/B-VIII.0, and JEFF-3.3 data.

In this paper, two main exercises have been carried out to describe the effect that varying an albedo boundary condition has in the computation of observables such as decay heat, neutron emission rate and nuclide inventory from a PWR fuel assembly (or a configuration of assemblies) during a depletion scenario. The SERPENT2 code was then employed to emphasize the importance of modeling a proper boundary condition for such purposes. Moreover, the effect of taking into account more than a single fuel-pin region for depletion studies while varying the type of boundary condition, was also accounted for. The first exercise has the main objective of comparing in a single fuel assembly the albedo variations ranging from 1.1 up to full vacuum conditions. By comparing to the reference assembly (considered to be the case of full reflective conditions), relative differences up to +17% were observed in decay heat and up to almost -30% in neutron emissions. Also, a clear dependence on the albedo was detected if more than one depletable zone was considered while computing the integral value of observables of interest. Regarding the second exercise, where a 3 × 3 configuration of fuel assemblies is being now considered with a reflector section in the middle, a negligible effect on the observables was observed for the single fuel pin zone case; instead, an effect in the 244Cm computation when analyzing two fuel pin-zones produced a change in the neutron emission rate during cooling time up to 2.5% (while comparing it to the reference single assembly case).

The colossal “Coatlicue” sculpture has usually been interpreted as a representation of the female supernatural Coatlicue (Serpents Her Skirt) who gave birth to the Mexica patron deity Huitzilopochtli, or it has been identified as the cult figure of Cihuacoatl (Woman Serpent) or Tlaltecuhtli (Earth Lord). This paper offers an alternative reading of the monumental statue, one that recognizes the existence of at least three nearly identical “Coatlicues” and thus recontextualizes the monument as one of a larger set. The iconography of these great stone females points to their identity as Tzitzimime, celestial demons who were understood to descend to devour humankind if the sun were to fail. According to the Mexican chroniclers, a cadre of these fearsome monoliths dominated the sculpture progam of the Templo Mayor.

O conhecimento popular sobre as serpentes, incluindo as práticas adotadas em casos de acidentes ofídicos, foi abordado neste estudo etnozoológico realizado na região de Araponga e entorno da Serra do Brigadeiro, Mata Atlântica do Estado de Minas Gerais, região Sudeste do Brasil. Entre agosto e novembro de 2008 foram realizadas entrevistas com 50 moradores da zona rural de Araponga e 20 funcionários do Parque Estadual da Serra do Brigadeiro (PESB). Em relação ao perfil cultural e social, os grupos avaliados diferiram entre si somente quanto ao nível de escolaridade (maior entre os funcionários do parque), apresentando as mesmas distribuições em relação a idade e religião. Também se verificou menor nível de escolaridade entre os indivíduos mais velhos. Em geral, ambos os grupos de entrevistados demonstraram conhecimento adequado sobre prevenção e procedimentos em casos de acidente ofídico (78,2% afirmaram procurar atendimento médico em caso de ofidismo). A utilização de substâncias da medicina popular para tratamento de acidentes ofídicos mostrou-se uma prática em desuso, relatada por aproximadamente 21% dos entrevistados. A maioria dos entrevistados (57,14%) afirmou não saber diferenciar uma serpente peçonhenta de uma não peçonhenta, e 66,67% demonstraram reconhecer o período chuvoso como aquele com maior frequência no encontro com serpentes. O grupo "Araponga" mostrou-se mais hostil em relação a encontros com serpentes, com 43% dos indivíduos afirmando matarem o animal, contra apenas 5% do grupo "PESB". A escolaridade do entrevistado foi decisiva no tipo de atitude tomada diante das serpentes, sendo menos hostis os indivíduos mais instruídos. Pessoas com menos escolaridade apresentaram maior tendência a considerar todas as serpentes como perigosas, e estas se mostraram também mais hostis com estes animais. O maior contato com atividades científicas e educativo-ambientais parece ter sido decisivo para a maior tolerância com as serpentes por parte do grupo "PESB". A realização de atividades de educação-ambiental com a população das comunidades de Araponga pode ampliar a conscientização quanto à importância das serpentes, instruindo aqueles que ainda as consideram indiscriminadamente nocivas.

Before encapsulation of spent nuclear fuel in a geological repository, the fuels need to be verified for safeguards purposes. This requirement applies to all spent fuel assemblies, including those with properties or designs that are especially challenging to verify. One such example are quivers, a new type of containers used to hold damaged spent fuel rods. After placing damaged rods inside the quivers, they are sealed with a thick lid and the water is removed. The lid is thick enough to significantly reduce the amount of the gamma radiation penetrating through it, which can make safeguards verification from the top using gamma techniques difficult. Considering that the number of quivers at storage facilities is foreseen to increase in near future, studying the feasibility of verification is timely. In this paper we make a feasibility study related to safeguards verification of quivers, aimed at investigating the gamma and neutron radiation field around a quiver designed by Westinghouse AB and filled with PWR fuel rods irradiated at the Swedish Ringhals site. A simplified geometry of the quiver and the detailed operational history of each rod are provided by Westinghouse and the reactor operator, respectively. The nuclide inventory of the rods placed in the quiver and the emission source terms are calculated with ORIGEN-ARP. The radiation transport is modeled with the Serpent2 Monte Carlo code. The first objective is to assess the capability of the spent fuel attribute tester (SFAT) to verify the content for nuclear safeguards purposes. The results show that the thick quiver lid attenuates the gamma radiation, thereby making gamma radiation based verification from above the quiver difficult.

This paper presents the first results of a computational platform dedicated to the propagation of nuclear data covariances, all the way to fuel cycle scenario observables. Such platform, based on in-house codes developed at SCK•CEN in Belgium, both for the creation of the many-randomized nuclear data libraries based on ENDF format and for fuel cycle scenario-studies (known as SANDY and ANICCA, respectively), was employed for the uncertainty assessment of the time-dependent inventory computed from a mono-recycling of Plutonium scenario based on a PWR fleet. An essential part of the procedure that deals with the creation of input data libraries to ANICCA, has been carried out this time by the SERPENT2 code. Due to the fact that its neutron transport and depletion parallelized calculation in 72 cores for up to 1640 days and 60 MWd/kg-HM takes almost one hour, it is feasible to finish a total of 100 ANICCA runs based on randomized input libraries created from ENDF/B-VII.1 neutron-reaction covariances in about one week. Therefore, it is consider that the computation of the output population statistics can be inferred from 100 observables representing time-dependent mass inventories. To mention a few results from the aforementioned NEA/OECD benchmark scenario, it was found out that the relative standard deviation of the accumulated plutonium in the final disposal after 120 years was of 7%, while for curium it corresponded to 8%. Thus, sources of uncertainty arising from neutron-reaction covariances do have an impact in the final quantitative analysis of the fuel cycle output uncertainties.

Quatrocentos e quinze casos de acidentes por Bothrops jararaca adulta (grupo A) atendidos no Hospital Vital Brazil - Instituto Butantan, no período de 1981 a 1987 foram comparados com 562 casos de acidentes pela mesma serpente porém filhote, atendidos no mesmo local e período (grupo B). Os pacientes do grupo A apresentaram maior freqüência de picada na perna, de uso de torniquete, de destruição tecidual na região da picada (bolha, necrose e abscesso) e, em média, receberam maior dose de soro e permaneceram internados por período mais longo. Quanto à sazonalidade, foram avaliados os acidentes por Bothrops jararaca atendidos no período de 1975 a 1988. Houve maior ocorrência no início e no final do ano, principalmente no início para picadas por serpentes adultas e no final para picadas por filhotes.

Várias são as sociedades, que construíram mitos associando as serpentes como seres prejudiciais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo compreender de que maneira o etnoconhecimento dos moradores da Fazenda Fervente município de Ribeira do Amparo/BA com a serpente P. olferssi tem contribuído para a manutenção das crenças, lendas e mitos em relação à espécie, e a influencia destas na sua conservação. Os dados foram coletados no período de novembro de 2014 a junho de 2015, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e conversas informais realizadas com 50 moradores, sendo 31 mulheres e 19 homens. De acordo com os moradores entrevistados, a cobra verde quando é perseguida e não ocorre o seu abate, fica à espera do seu agressor até que consiga picá-lo, pois as mesmas são vingativas. Por esse motivo e pela percepção de que todas as cobras são perigosas para os seres humanos e para os animais domésticos, o abate da referida espécie ocorre de forma indiscriminada pelos moradores da comunidade. Nesse sentido, torna-se fundamental o desenvolvimento de trabalhos de educação ambiental, buscando informar sobre a biologia das serpentes de um modo geral, descrevendo sua importância ecológica, principalmente por ser um animal que auxiliam no controle biológico de outras espécies e também por serem fontes de alimentos para outros animais.

Presently, a criticality safety evaluation methodology for the final geological disposal of Swiss spent nuclear fuel is under development at the Paul Scherrer Institute in collaboration with the Swiss National Technical Competence Centre in the field of deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. This method in essence pursues a best estimate plus uncertainty approach and includes burnup credit. Burnup credit is applied by means of a computational scheme called BUCSS-R (Burnup Credit System for the Swiss Reactors–Repository case) which is complemented by the quantification of uncertainties from various sources. BUCSS-R consists in depletion, decay and criticality calculations with CASMO5, SERPENT2 and MCNP6, respectively, determining the keff eigenvalues of the disposal canister loaded with the Swiss spent nuclear fuel assemblies. However, the depletion calculation in the first and the criticality calculation in the third step, in particular, are subject to uncertainties in the nuclear data input. In previous studies, the effects of these nuclear data-related uncertainties on obtained keff values, stemming from each of the two steps, have been quantified independently. Both contributions to the overall uncertainty in the calculated keff values have, therefore, been considered as fully correlated leading to an overly conservative estimation of total uncertainties. This study presents a consistent approach eliminating the need to assume and take into account unrealistically strong correlations in the keff results. The nuclear data uncertainty quantification for both depletion and criticality calculation is now performed at once using one and the same set of perturbation factors for uncertainty propagation through the corresponding calculation steps of the evaluation method. The present results reveal the overestimation of nuclear data-related uncertainties by the previous approach, in particular for spent nuclear fuel with a high burn-up, and underline the importance of consistent nuclear data uncertainty quantification methods. However, only canister loadings with UO2 fuel assemblies are considered, not offering insights into potentially different trends in nuclear data-related uncertainties for mixed oxide fuel assemblies.

Aqui nós documentamos em detalhes a predação de um lagarto (Tropidurus hispidus (Spix, 1825)) por uma serpente (Oxyrhopus trigeminus Duméril, Bibron &amp; Duméril, 1854). Muitos estudos identificaram lagartos Tropidurus Wied-Neuwied, 1825 como presas de serpentes brasileiras. Assim, este registro fornece importantes informações sobre a história natural de ambas as espécies, especialmente de O. trigeminus, que são essenciais para a compreensão de sua ecologia.</p><p align="justify"><strong>Palavras chave</strong>: Ecologia alimentar, dieta, constrição de presas, Saurofagia.<strong></strong></p><p align="justify"><strong>Abstract</strong>: The predation of lizards is rarely observed in the wild, and events involving snakes are scarcer still. Here we document in detail the predation of a lizard (Tropidurus hispidus (Spix, 1825)) by a snake (Oxyrhopus trigeminus Duméril, Bibron &amp; Duméril, 1854). Many studies have identified Tropidurus Wied-Neuwied, 1825 lizards as prey for Brazilian snakes. Thus, this record provides important insights into the natural history of both species, especially O. trigeminus, which are essential for the understanding of their ecology.<strong></strong></p><p align="justify"><strong>Key words</strong>: Feed ecology, diet, prey constriction, Saurophagy.</p>

Em avaliação dos prontuários médicos de 3.139 pacientes picados por serpentes do gênero Bothrops atendidos no Hospital Vital Brazil (HVB), de 1981 a 1990, observou-se maior acometimento do sexo masculino (75,7%). Em 1.412 casos (45,0%) a serpente foi identificada, sendo 1.376 B. jararaca, 20 B. jararacussu, 11 B. neuwiedi, 2 B. moojeni, 2 B. alternatus e 1 B. pradoi. As regiões anatômicas mais comumente picadas foram: pé (47,5%) e mão (21,3%). O torniquete foi realizado em 38,2% dos casos e sua freqüência diminuiu durante esse período (p < 0,001). As manifestações clínicas mais freqüentes foram: dor (95,6%), edema (95,4%), equimose (56,1%), bolha (13,8%), necrose (16,5%), abscesso (11,0%), sangramento extratecidual (12,3%), insuficiência renal (1,6%) e choque (0,7%). A coagulação sanguínea foi avaliada em 2.990 casos e estava alterada em 1.730 (57,9%). Ocorreram 21 amputações (0,7%) e 9 óbitos (0,3%). A dose de soro administrada no HVB diminuiu ao longo desse período (p < 0,001).

In South Asia, cobras are the animals most dangerous to humans—as humans are to cobras. Paradoxically, one threat to cobras is their worship by feeding them milk, which is harmful to them, but religiously prescribed as an act of love and tenderness towards a deity. Across cultural and religious contexts, the Nāgas, mostly cobra-shaped beings, are prominent among Hindu and Buddhist deities. Are they seen as animals? Doing ethnographic fieldwork on a Himalayan female Nāga Goddess, this question has long accompanied me during my participant observation and interviews, and I have found at least as many possible answers as I have had interview partners. In this article, I trace the ambiguous relationship between humans, serpents and serpent deities through the classical Sanskrit literature, Hindu and Buddhist iconographies and the retelling of myths in modern movies, short stories, and fantasy novels. In these narrations and portrayals, Nāgas are often “real” snakes, i.e., members of the animal kingdom—only bigger, shape-shifting or multi-headed and, curiously, thirsty for milk. The article focuses on those traits of Nāgas which set them apart from animals, and on those traits that characterize them as snakes.
