Sense of coherence is the perception of the world as coherent. Its conceptual similarities to the Big Five personality traits have been demonstrated. We therefore investigated the relationship between sense of coherence and the Big Five. In total, 1088 Japanese youths completed the 29-item Sense of Coherence Scale and the Ten-Item Personality Inventory. Neuroticism was negatively correlated and extraversion was positively correlated with comprehensibility ( r = −.47, .35), manageability ( r = −.44, .26), and meaningfulness ( r = −.28, .30). These correlations were strong, and the overlap between the two scales was about 36 percent. While the Big Five are related to sense of coherence, their differences cannot be ignored.

In contrast, the multiple demands faced by university students can trigger stress. In this study, we aimed to determine if the sense of coherence was related to emotional exhaustion. Participants were 960 university students (convenience sampling), 81% were women. They completed two self-report questionnaires: the SOC-13 Sense of Coherence Questionnaire and the Emotional Exhaustion Scale. We did correlation analyses and the Student’s t test to detect differences between groups. Women scored higher than men in emotional exhaustion. The third year students achieved higher scores in sense of coherence than first year students. Students with high scores in sense of coherence showed low levels of emotional exhaustion. These results indicate that it would be useful to design and implement strategies that help increase the sense of coherence and therefore reduce emotional exhaustion in university students.

The relationship of scores on sense of coherence with measures of personality traits was assessed using the 29-item Orientation to Life Questionnaire and the Eysenck Personality Inventory. In one group of 95 mixed-sex students scores on Neuroticism bore a highly negative relationship with scores on sense of coherence. Findings support the current literature that health questionnaires may indirectly measure Neuroticism and that personality variables play an important role in general health.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess burnout and sense of coherence levels in dentistry students of Karachi. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study involving 361 students from four renowned dental colleges in Karachi was carried out. The students were distributed a questionnaire derived from the Mayo Clinic Well-being Index (WBI) and a modified 13-item Antonovsky's Sense of Coherence Scale (SOC scale). They were stratified on the basis of gender, age, professional year, institution, relationship status, history of chronic medical condition and history of chronic psychiatric condition. Scores for the WBI and SOC scale were calculated. For the WBI, a score of >4 was a sign that an individual was at risk of developing burnout or other severe outcomes. A high or low total score on the SOC scale demonstrated whether the individual was able to cope with his environment or not. MS Excel and SPSS version 23 were used for data compilation and statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics were calculated. Chi-square test of independence was applied to gauge any association between the strata and outcome variables. After determination of statistical difference, Mann Whitney-U Test and Kruskal Wallis Test were applied to compare the means where a significant association was found. A p-value of 0.05 or less was considered significant. RESULTS: The mean WBI score was found to be 4.07. Around 64% respondents were at-risk of burnout (score > 4). A greater percentage of females was at risk (66%) as compared to males (50%). Third professional students were found to be the most affected (77% with WBI score > 4 and 9% in the low coherence category). The mean SOC score was found to be 36.39 (moderate levels of coherence). Overall, around 4-9% of each professional year students exhibited a low sense of coherence. Age, relationship status, institution and a history of chronic medical and/or psychiatric condition were not found to have a significant association with the outcome variables (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: A significant number of dentistry students are at risk of burn-out and suffer from a low sense of coherence. The risk factors need to be evaluated and solutions need to be found to create a healthy and conducive environment for the growth and learning of the students. More research needs to be focused on gathering data related to the well-being of dentistry students. KEYWORDS: Burnout, sense of coherence, well-being index, dentistry.

The article relates to a sense of coherence and styles of coping with stress in a group of students of medical and non-medical universities. In the first part, a brief characteristics of the specifics of studies and future student work from both types of universities were presented. The issue of a sense of coherence and coping with stress in research was approximated closer. The study used a life orientation questionnaire (SOC-29) examining the sense of coherence and a questionnaire of coping in stressful situations (CISS). The level of a sense of coherence and strategies to deal with stress from students from medical and non-medical universities were compared. With the use of SOC-29 and CISS questionnaires, a group of 145 people were examined. Among the respondents there were 72 students from medical universities and 73 students from non-medical universities. In a group of students from medical universities, it has been shown that the level of sense of coherence is significantly different from the level of sense of coherence of non-medical students. The style focused on emotions was most often used in both student groups. There is a relationship between a style focused on emotions and a sense of coherence. In the study groups, no relationship was shown between the style concentrated on avoidance and the sense of coherence. The level of sense of coherence of students from medical universities is significantly different from the level of sense of coherence of students from non-medical universities. Students from both universities most often use the style concentrated on emotions, less often task style. The style focused on emotions correlates at a high level with a sense of coherence. The style focused on avoidance does not correlate with a sense of coherence. A relationship between an emotional style of coping with stress and a low sense of coherence is visible.

ABSTRACTBackground: Caring for a relative with dementia has been associated with high levels of psychological morbidity in carers. Sense of coherence is an important resource of successful coping with caregiving. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between stress associated with caregiving, sense of coherence, and self-reported depression and anxiety in family carers of people with dementia. We hypothesized that carers reporting high levels of anxiety and depression will report low levels of coherence, and that the relationship between caregiver stress and affective symptoms will be mediated by sense of coherence. Methods: A total of 170 carers of people with dementia took part in the present study. Family carers completed the Sense of Coherence Scale, the Relative Stress Scale, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A series of multiple linear regressions were conducted to examine the relationship between stress related to caregiving, caregiver anxiety and depression, and whether sense of coherence mediated this relationship. Results: Self-reported anxiety and depression were associated with low levels of sense of coherence. Sense of coherence mediated the relationship between burden and self-reported depressive effect and anxiety symptoms. Conclusions: Carers reporting high levels of anxiety and depression are more likely to report low levels of sense of coherence. The relationship between stress related to caregiving and depressive symptoms is mediated by carers’ self-reported sense of coherence. Future psychotherapeutic intervention studies in family carers of people with dementia may incorporate strategies that specifically target sense of coherence.

Objective. To evaluate the associations between sense of coherence and psychosocial health among unemployed adult population. Material and methods. The data were collected during a cross-sectional study in 2005. There were 429 filled-in questionnaires received (response rate, 53.6%) from unemployed persons registered at the Kaunas Labor Market Office (Lithuania). For the assessment of the sense of coherence, a short 13-item version of the Orientation to Life Questionnaire was used. Long-term unemployment was defined as lasting 12 months or longer. Logistic regression was used to estimate the risk factors having influence on sense of coherence. The risk was evaluated using odds ratio (OR). Results. The mean score for sense of coherence was 56.6±11.2 (min, 13; max, 91). Significantly higher sense of coherence was found among the short-term unemployed as compare to the long-term ones. Analysis showed that sense of coherence was significantly higher in males, more educated and less materially deprived groups. The findings indicated that persons with depression, suicide intentions, more intensive alcohol consumption (after the job loss), poor self-reported health, feelings of loneliness and shame, and poor relations with family reported lower sense of coherence. The risk of low sense of coherence was significantly higher for females (OR=2.97) and the long-term unemployed (OR=1.81). Nevertheless, higher education (OR=0.73) and income (OR=0.83) were the factors that significantly improved sense of coherence. Conclusions. Sense of coherence was low among the unemployed in Kaunas. Sense of coherence was lower among the unemployed with negative psychosocial health characteristics in comparison to the unemployed with positive characteristics.

Background: Procrastination is considered problematic when it affects normal day-to-day functioning. It can serve as a deterrent among undergraduate dental students both for their academic and career growth. Behaviour modifications are required to change this negative behaviour and Sense of Coherence is one such approach. Aim: To assess the relationship between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination among a group of undergraduate dental students in Chennai city. Material and Methods: A cross sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 358 undergraduate dental students. Thirteen item Sense of Coherence scale and Lay’s Procrastination scale were used to collect data about Sense of Coherence and Procrastination among undergraduate dental students respectively, using google forms. One-way ANOVA and Independent T test were used to test for difference in mean scores between groups based on year of study and gender, respectively. Pearsons correlation coefficient followed by Simple Linear Regression was performed to test for association between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination. Results: The overall mean Sense of Coherence score of the study participants was 49.52 ± 8.13. The overall mean Procrastination score of the study participants was 56.58 ± 10.02. Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient revealed a negative correlation (r = -.255) between Sense of Coherence and Procrastination (p = .000) indicating that with an increase in Sense of Coherence, Procrastination decreases. In tandem, the third year students with lowest Sense of Coherence score showed highest procrastination. Conclusion: Procrastination is negatively associated with Sense of Coherence and hence behaviour modification interventions based on Sense of Coherence are required, to be customized and incorporated in dental curriculum to reduce procrastination among undergraduate dental students.

Background.Previous research has found that sense of coherence is significantly related to aspects of health, but studies on nurse students with a salutogenic approach are limited.Objectives.To investigate (1) if nurse students’ experience of stress differs among clinical practice in nursing homes and medical/surgical wards. (2) Whether sense of coherence and stress are associated with quality of life. (3) If sense of coherence acts as a moderator in the relationship between stress and quality of life.Participants.Data were collected from 227 nurse students between January and April 2014.Methods.Questionnaires measuring stress, sense of coherence and quality of life were completed after a period of clinical practice. Linear regression analyses were used to measure associations between stress, and sense of coherence respectively, and quality of life.Results.The results showed that 33.92% of the students experienced moderate or high levels of stress, and there was significantly more stress in hospital wards compared to nursing homes (p= 0.027). Sense of coherence was positively associated with quality of life in the simple and multiple regression analyses (p< 0.01). Stress was negatively associated with quality of life in the simple regression analysis (p< 0.01), but not in the multiple analyses when sense of coherence was included. However, when we included an interaction term, stress was no longer associated with quality of life and sense of coherence appeared to be a significant moderator in the relationship between stress and quality of life (p= 0.015). Thus, a negative association was seen among students with the lowest levels of sense of coherence.Conclusion.These findings suggest that sense of coherence could be seen as a resource that nurse educators can build upon when supporting students in coping with stress.

ABSTRACTBackground:We investigate to what extent pain in older individuals is predicted by on the one hand chronic morbidity as a resistance deficit, and on the other hand psychological resistance resources and the sense of coherence. For the first time, we tested the salutogenic hypothesis that the sense of coherence mediates the relationship between resources/deficits and pain. Methods:In our questionnaire study, we assessed selected psychological resistance resources (self-esteem, generalized self-efficacy, optimism, and social support), the number of self-reported medical diagnoses of chronic illness, the sense of coherence, and pain (SF-36 Bodily Pain subscale) in a sample of 387 older persons (at the mean age of 73.8 years). Results:Using hierarchical regression, we found that morbidity and sense of coherence were the only significant predictors of pain, with morbidity showing the strongest effect. Using path analysis, the sense of coherence was a mediator of the relationship between resistance resources/deficits and pain. Conclusions:With respect to our analytical model, in which pain experience was the criterion variable, morbidity and the sense of coherence are important predictors of pain. Moreover, we found evidence for the salutogenic idea that the sense of coherence represents a mediator variable as it pools resistance/deficits influences on pain. We recommend a prospective design to explore these assumed causal chains in future research.

The objective of the article is the answer to the question if the level of the sense of coherence is linked with stress-coping styles in the group of subjects. It was assumed that in the group of youth the sense of coherence would positively correlate with stress-coping strategies based on problem-solving and looking for social contacts, whereas negatively with strategies based on emotion display (Płaczkiewicz, Tucholska 2009).The study was conducted on a group of 149 teenagers of both sexes, aged 14-18 years. The research employed the Life Orientation Questionnaire (SOC-29) by A. Antonovsky and the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS) Questionnaire by N.S. Endler and J.D.A Parker. In the group of youth, correlation coefficients indicate a moderate, positive relationship of the sense of coherence and a sense of comprehensibility with a task-focused style. There was also a positive correlation between the general sense of coherence (and three components: a sense of comprehensibility, a sense of manageability and a sense of meaningfulness) and looking for social contacts. Statistically significant correlation coefficients were also obtained between the emotion-focused style and the general sense of coherence and its two components. The results of this study have important implications. They allow for a better understanding of the sense of coherence that contribute to the stress-coping styles among youth. Future interventions could be based on the strengthening of sense of coherence in analyzed group.

This study aims to explore the relationship between the basic characteristics of college students’ social anxiety and the perceived social support and sense of coherence, and further explore the mediating role of the sense of coherence between perceived social support and social anxiety. A questionnaire survey of 420 college students was conducted using the Interaction Anxiousness Scale (IAS), the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) and the Sense of Coherence-13(SOC-13). The results showed that: (1) The social anxiety in contemporary college students was very high, and the phenomenon of social anxiety of female is significantly higher than male. (2) College students’ social anxiety were significantly negatively correlated with both perceived social support and sense of coherence, and perceived social support was significantly related to sense of coherence. (3) Sense of coherence plays a partial mediation between perceived social support and social anxiety. This study provides theoretical support for revealing the mechanism between perceived social support and social anxiety.

A prospective 10-year follow-up study was conducted to determine the significance of the preoperative sense of coherence, with respect to the preoperative and 10-year clinical characteristics, among lumbar spinal stenosis patients ( N = 99). In addition, the predictive value of the preoperative sense of coherence regarding the 10-year surgery outcome was also evaluated. In a logistic regression analysis, a weak preoperative sense of coherence and low functional ability predicted the patients’ functional ability 10 years after the surgery. Moreover, those patients with weak sense of coherence before surgery showed poorer functional ability 10 years after the surgery, but not preoperatively. A weak preoperative sense of coherence seems to associate with poorer long-term outcome after surgery; therefore, various rehabilitation strategies are discussed.

The ubiquity of smartphones has introduced an addiction phenomenon, which may attenuate the role of sense of coherence in enhancing social support and satisfaction with life. Utilizing self-regulation theory, in this study we examined the mediating role of social support in the relationship between sense of coherence and satisfaction with life, as well as the moderating role of smartphone addiction in the relationship between sense of coherence and social support. Survey results from 547 undergraduate students in China indicated that social support partially mediated the relationship between sense of coherence and satisfaction with life. Furthermore, as the frequency of smartphone use increased, the positive impact of sense of coherence on social support diminished. The practical implications of these findings are discussed in depth.

A strong sense of coherence buffered from strain almost independently of respondents' age, exposure to stressors, or perceived stressors; however, a strong sense of coherence was slightly related to the selection of individuals into jobs characterized by relatively low exposure to such stressors as lack of control and role ambiguity. Sense of coherence did not moderate the relationships among exposure to stressors, perceived stressors, and strain experienced.

This study addressed the role of a sense of personal identity as a self-regulatory mechanism that facilitates congruence and coherence of goals that people set for themselves and thereby enhances their capacity to exert self-control. A total of 489 young adults completed a packet of questionnaires that assessed basic dimensions of sense of identity, congruence and coherence of goals, and self-control capacity. Direct and indirect paths of a sense of identity on self-control were examined using structural equation modelling. The proposed model was, for the most part, supported by data. It should be noted, however, that the mediation effects were fairly small, and the sense of identity had a direct predictive effect on self-control over and above congruence and coherence of goals.

AbstractAim. Assessment of the effectiveness of therapeutic education conducted by nurses working in the internal medicine wards in patients with diagnosed type 2 diabetes in the context of the sense of coherence.Material and methods. The survey was carried out among 100 nurses working in the internal medicine wards. In the assessment of the effectiveness of therapeutic education, the authors' survey questionnaire was used, whereas the sense of coherence of the surveyed nurses was measured by means of SOC-29 life orientation questionnaire.Results. Therapeutic education conducted by nurses who completed postgraduate studies was a more planned process and covered more topics. A high sense of coherence correlates with a wider range of educational interactions. Over half of the surveyed nurses (56%) showed an average sense of coherence and 44% - a high sense of coherence, what was significant for the effectiveness of conducted health education. The number of encountered factors hindering the education of patients depends on the level of the sense of coherence. The surveyed with a high sense of coherence face more difficulties than those with an average sense of coherence.Conclusions. The nurses declaring the implementation of therapeutic education of patients used the knowledge gained during postgraduate education. Those who completed such studies covered a wider range of topics during the education process. A high sense of coherence is an important factor, significant in the implementation of the educational function of the nurse, and the improvement of the effectiveness of this kind of education can be achieved thanks to wider consideration of these issues at universities and postgraduate education.

Scores on Sense of Coherence and Negative Affectivity correlated −.30, indicating that the relationship is not always strong enough to assume that the former scale measures the inverse of the latter. Scores on Sense of Coherence and health ratings correlated .26, reducing to .25 with Negative Affectivity partialled out. Introduction and objectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the level of the sense of coherence and stress coping strategies among the homecoming participants of foreign military missions. Due to the nature of peacekeeping and stabilising missions and the tasks performed by their participants, the ability to cope with a stressful situation in the face of danger is crucial, not only for the sake of their health, but most of all due to its significant impact on collective security.Material and methodsConverted values of the scores obtained in the Polish adaptation of Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations by Szczepanik, Strelau and Wrześniewski were used as indicators for stress coping styles (a dependent variable). The results received in Antonovsky’s Orientation to Life Questionnaire (Sense of Coherence Scale, SOC-29) were employed as indicators for the sense of coherence (an independent variable).ResultsThe stronger the sense of coherence, the more likely the respondent to choose the task-oriented coping style. Owing to cognitive transformations, a difficult situation is interpreted as a challenge that can be coped with by a given person, who then makes efforts to solve the problem.ConclusionsThe research clearly shows that: (1) a strong sense of coherence significantly reduces the level of perceived stress and has a decisive impact on the choice of the preferred coping style; (2) the sense of coherence determines the choice of the preferred stress coping style; (3) individuals with a strong sense of coherence perceive stressors as challenges rather than threats; (4) individuals with a low sense of coherence tend to focus their energy on negative emotions and engage in activities of a definitely unhealthy nature (smoking, alcohol consumption).

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the risk to nurses’ mental health has increased rapidly. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of depression and burnout and to evaluate their possible association with the sense of coherence in nursing staff during the pandemic crisis. The Copenhagen Burnout Inventory questionnaire, Beck’s Depression Inventory, and the Sense of Coherence questionnaire were completed by 101 male and 559 female nurses. Individual and demographic data were recorded. Regarding depression, 25.5% of respondents exhibited mild depression, 13.5% moderate depression and 7.6% severe depression. In the burnout scale, 47.1% had a pathological value. Female nurses had higher burnout (t test p < 0.01, 49.03 vs. 38.74) and depression (t test p < 0.01, 11.29 vs. 6.93) scores compared to men and lower levels in the sense of coherence (p < 0.05, 59.45 vs. 65.13). Regression evidenced that 43.7% of the variation in the BDI rating was explained by the CBI, while an additional 8.3% was explained by the sense of coherence. Mediation analysis indicated a partial mediation of burnout in the correlation between sense of coherence and depression. The sense of coherence acted as a negative regulator between burnout and depression.

Evaluating sense of coherence and depressive symptoms in patients who have had lumbar spinal stenosis surgery may help in identifying those in need of enhanced support for postoperative recovery.

Background: Nursing education is associated with high intensity work and potential burnout. Sense of coherence mitigates the effect of job stress and enhances work wellness. This study aims to identify work-related patterns of behavior and experience among nurse educators and examine the independent relationship between sense of coherence and workplace behavior patterns. Methods: The study used a cross-sectional descriptive design and a sample of 130 nurse educators teaching in the Faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University, Egypt. The nurse educators completed questionnaires measuring sense of coherence and work-related patterns of behavior and experience. Results: Discriminant analysis delineated four work behavior patterns: healthy (16.2%), frugal (1.5%), overburdened (68.5%), and burnout (13.8%). Sense of coherence was positively associated with the healthy work pattern (r = .66, p < .001), and negatively associated with the burnout (r = -.63, p < .001) and overburdened (r = -.18, p < .05) patterns. Regression analyses, controlling for years of teaching experience, indicated that a weak sense of coherence was associated with classification of nurse educators into the overburdened work pattern (B = -.05, SE = .12, Wald χ2 = 13.13, p < .001) and the burnout work pattern (B = -.10, SE = .02, Wald χ2 = 21.52, p < .001) compared to healthy work pattern.}Conclusions: The study findings highlight the importance of sense of coherence as a health-promoting resource in the workplace. Strategies are discussed for creating meaningful work experiences to reinforce a sense of coherence and simultaneously cultivate work-related wellness among nurse educators.
