Abstract LGBTQ seniors have some different needs for programs and services, are at a higher risk of social isolation, and are often underserved in the community. Senior centers serve as a hub of resources in a community and are purposefully situated to address the needs and interests of all seniors in a community; they are a natural outlet for targeted programming for LGBTQ seniors. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate what municipal senior centers across Massachusetts are doing to meet the needs of their LGBTQ seniors. A total of 24 senior centers were identified by the Massachusetts Association of Councils on Aging (MCOA) as providing LGBTQ programming. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 senior center directors or programming staff from different communities across Massachusetts to learn more about their specific programming. For almost all senior centers in this study, the main LGBTQ-specific programming was a congregate meal with an activity. Activities included both recreational activities like a film-screening and educational engagements such as guest speakers or specialists on housing, legal services, and health promotion. Distinguishing characteristics included whether or not programming had an intergenerational component, type of recruitment methods, and geographic clustering of programs. For example, two regions emerged as having shared activities for LGBTQ seniors. Results from this study will be used to illustrate models of best practice when it comes to LGBTQ programming for older people.

Abstract Community senior centers are tasked with providing aging adults services and programs, congregate meals, and transportation, set forth by the Older Americans Act. The overall function of senior centers is especially critical for rural communities, as rural communities are home to a greater proportion of older adults compared to metropolitan and low-density urban areas. To assess the current needs of the aging population in rural Northwest, OH, a total of 9 focus groups were held (N=45) as part of a larger mixed-methodological study. Through this work, older adults identified limitations of the current senior center transportation. A lack of transportation and accessibility of current transportation were noted as barriers to full senior center use. Findings from this study confirm disparities in rural transportation; a lack of transportation is a major obstacle to program completion. Recommendations address the unique challenges and needs for transportation services for in rural communities are presented.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggests that linkages between primary care practices and community-based resources can improve health in lower income and minority patients, but examples of these are rare. We conducted a prospective, mixed-methods observational study to identify indicators of primary care–community linkage associated with the frequency of visits to community-based senior centers and improvements in diabetes-related outcomes among 149 new senior center members (72% Hispanic). We used semistructured interviews at baseline and 9-month follow-up, obtaining visit frequency from member software and clinical assessments including hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) from colocated primary care clinics. Members’ discussion of their activities with their primary care providers (PCPs) was associated with increased visits to the senior centers, as well as diabetes-related improvements. Direct feedback from the senior centers to their PCPs was desired by the majority of members and may help to reinforce use of community resources for self-management support.

Abstract Senior centers provide a wide range of programs and services to meet the needs of the growing aging population. As senior centers aim to serve all older community-members, it is important to assess the value of these services through the lens of both attendees and non-attendees of senior centers. Using a sample of 4,750 community-dwelling adults age 60 or older from Massachusetts, this project aims to analyze perceptions of program importance by center attendees versus non-attendees. Almost 60% of the sample never attend a senior center. Nearly a third of center attendees ranked exercise classes and education opportunities as important, compared to about 20% of non-attendees. Almost half of attendees rated application assistance and nutrition programs as not important, compared to 38% and 40% of non-attendees, respectively. Conversely, for all programs listed, non-users more frequently checked “unsure” of program/service importance. This was especially true for exercise classes, professional services, social or recreational activities, educational opportunities, and trips, for which 18% of non-attendees selected unsure. Center attendees more frequently view the programs/services offered at the senior center as important or very important, likely because they have greater awareness. Results highlight that that non-attendees are unsure of the value of programs or have no interest the programs and services provided. Not only do these results provide an opportunity to senior centers to assess how valuable certain programs and services are, they also emphasize the need for continued information streams regarding programs and services offered at senior centers to those who are unfamiliar.

Abstract Senior centers are an integral community resource, providing programs and services intended to meet the vast range of needs and interests of older adults. There is a growing literature describing senior center participants and benefits to participation, but little is known about those who choose not to participate at a local senior center. This presentation uniquely characterizes non-users of senior centers, based on a sample of community-dwelling adults aged 50+ from seven communities in Massachusetts (N = 9,462). To date, this is the largest data set that describes senior center usage. Most of the sample were women (60%) and in the 60-69 age group (36%). More than three quarters of the sample do not use the local senior center (77%). The most common reasons for non-usage were lack of interest (27%) and not feeling old enough (26%). There are significant differences in reasons of non-usage among age groups and gender (p < .001). Younger age groups’ (50-69) most popular reasons for non-usage were not feeling old enough, not having time, inconvenient senior center hours, and not knowing what is offered. In contrast, older age groups (80+) more frequently reported having no interest or using programs elsewhere. Men were more likely to report not being interested and not being familiar with what is offered. Women were more likely to report not having time, inconvenient hours of programming, and using programs elsewhere. Based on results from this study, this presentation will outline implications for the future of senior centers and their programming.

Abstract Senior centers across the nation continue to serve as important access and focal points for older adults to voice their desires, get basic needs met, and to engage in opportunities that support many of the key concepts of Age-Friendliness (i.e. social participation, respect and social inclusion, civic engagement, transportation, and community supports and health services). Senior centers are the front line of aging services and thus in a position to implement programs and raise public awareness about age-friendly initiatives. The purpose of this presentation is to present and discuss the involvement of senior centers or other senior service agencies, as well as to characterize the mobilization of a community after joining the movement. We will present 5 case studies of age-friendly communities who are in the implementation phase of their initiative, to illustrate the challenges, opportunities, and outcomes associated with placing a senior center at the forefront of the movement. Based on the results of this work, we will present a typology of age-friendly community initiatives as a mechanism for supporting other communities make this transition. We conclude with a discussion of how age-friendly communities are part of the paradigm shift of aging in community and the ways in which this work intersects with other health policy initiatives with which cities and towns engage.

Research surrounding older adults, social support, and emotional well-being are richly researched topics. However, literature is devoid of qualitative studies and research focusing specifically on community centers and older adultsâ social networks, which are integral for understanding the growing needs of older adults in todayâ s society. Guided by the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, activity theory, and ecological theory, four in-in-depth interviews were conducted and then coded for themes. The central themes highlighted family connection, connection with others, resiliency, helping others, type of activity, restoring self, community connection, exploration, convenience, and life stages. Suggestions for future research and possible impacts for clinical practice are discussed.

Introduction; Covid-19 has, in addition to restricting social contact with family and friends, also meant that municipal meeting places have stopped their activities for seniors. For many older people, this change has led to a lack of social context and increased loneliness. Trying to encourage the elderly to continue social participation with the help of information and communication technology (ICT) is thus seen as an important part of the health promotion work. Aim; The study aimed to gain an increased understanding of how different municipal meeting places experienced and worked to promote social participation digitally among the target group of seniors during the Corona Covid 19 pandemic. Methods; The study was conducted through a qualitative interview study with a semi-structured interview guide. Ten professionals participated, represented 7 municipal meeting places for seniors in Skåne. The data was analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Results; The majority of the meeting places had changed their operations and instead offered activities of various kinds through ICT. Most of the municipalities also offered IT support during the pandemic. However, the elderly were perceived as difficult to reach and recruitment to digital activity was considered low. Conclusions; The meeting places should work to strengthen the elderly's digital competence and motivation for promoting social participation digitally. The professionals also need to be stimulated in the digital development work and receive continuous competence development. The workplaces should introduce a digital strategy for the survival of development even after the physical meeting places have opened up.

Community-based care facilities have a positive effect in supporting older adults and people with dementia thus improving their well-beings. Despite authoring empirical studies focused on providing design interventions, researchers often remain unclear about whether and how exactly practitioners and architects should implement these interventions. This paper presents an on-going project of a senior center in a small municipality in Germany. It aims to explain how the municipality (the client) and the design team (the architect) cooperate to apply updated research-based interventions, and how trade-offs are made. It discusses several research-based interventions during the design process. They include: 1) the early engagement of architects into the planning process; 2) the use of small-scale care units as care concept; 3) offering easily accessible and visible communal areas within the building; 4) providing an area open to the neighborhood; and 5) taking into consideration of the local urban form and materials. The article enables the readers to gain an insider look of the design process of a care facility and become familiar with some of the common trade-offs in design practice. Sufficient access to research materials and efficient communication with the client from the beginning of a project are the key elements to successfully implement research-based design interventions.

The subject of this thesis is the conversion and extension of the former School of Industrial High School in Rousínov furniture and expansion of housing for the elderly. School buildings were built in the 70s of the 20th century and today are only partially and temporarily used, and are waiting for its rebirth. The aim of the project is to open the area to people and incorporate it into the daily life of citizens Rousínov. Cinema, restaurants, galleries, clubs and housing - it's all part of the new city center. Already incurred background builds housing for the elderly, which is its location in the heart of a quality place for the next stage of life. By activating these functions is an isolated island in the city center becomes a full-fledged part of the public space Rousínov. The first stage is the conversion of schools to the cultural and community center. Slogan conversion is cleansing. Clean up objects from unnecessary structures and layers of history. Show support structure and inject new energy into the buildings. The construction itself enables spatial play of vertical and horizontal surfaces. Space clubrooms and galleries are open to the second floor, housing units are designed as maisonettes. Everything is simple and functional. It remains only the pace of life, which objects to bring residents Rousínov. As a next stage will be created in the area of housing for seniors. Demand for housing for the elderly is still high and it's no different in Rousínov and surroundings. In the House of care service that is not on the edge and the capacity is insufficient. Therefore, the potential use of school premises in the town center is a suitable solution for senior housing. The proposal does not find one universal solution for all, but aims to promote the uniqueness and future residents based on their individual needs. Therefore, there is no one big complex retirement home, but three different objects according to the degree of autonomy of the population.

Mbepera, Joyce Germanus. „An exploration of the influences of female under-representation in senior leadership positions in community secondary schools (CSSs) in rural Tanzania“. Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2015. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10021915/.

Annotation:
This study explores the influences of female under-representation in senior leadership positions in community secondary schools in rural Tanzania. Key issues include factors contributing to women under-representation in leadership, the perceptions of members of school communities of women leaders and the challenges facing current women leaders that deter other women teachers from taking leadership posts. The empirical study included interviews, focus group discussions and questionnaires and involved 259 participants at schools and district level in one district in rural Tanzania. Twenty schools were involved and included 20 heads of schools, teachers, members of school boards, parents and a District Educational Officer. The empirical study found that, at the individual level, familial responsibilities and rejecting the post due to poor social services in rural areas deterred women from taking leadership posts. At the organisational level, the lack of transparent procedures for recommending, recruiting and appointing heads also contributed to poorer access by women. At the societal level, negative perceptions and stereotypes of female leaders, conservative expectations of women in the private domain rather than in professional and public roles, and deep-seated beliefs in some rural areas pertaining to issues such as witchcraft, at times resulted in physical risk and exploitation of female leaders. These proved to be strong barriers to leadership succession and resulted in on-going, significant challenges for incumbent female leaders. Overall, the study concludes that female under-representation in school leadership in rural Tanzania is influenced by a number of interrelated factors at the individual, societal and organisational level (Fagenson, 1990a), with dominant social norms and values having a cross-cutting influence on the access, experience and perceptions of female school leaders. The study thus suggests a number of measures for improving female representation in community secondary school leadership in Tanzania at the professional and personal development level, recruitment level and policy level.

Magister Educationis - MEd
Since the inception of the University in 1960 under the Apartheid regime and up until a few years ago Afrikaans had dominated both as educational and as communication medium. However, political change - at the University and in South Africa - has brought about a change in language patterns. According to the HSRC Work Committee on Languages and Language Instruction (1981), a high percentage (40%) of Afrikaans-speaking people classified as coloured and living in the Cape Peninsula choose English as the medium of instruction and also regard it as the most important language to be learnt at schools (also 40%). As a result of this, and the enrolment of a large percentage of Xhosa speaking students, who generally prefer English to Afrikaans as an educational medium, English has become the language most commonly used both inside and outside the classroom. The homogeneity of preference has, however, not been matched by mastery of the language. For approximately 70% of all first-year students English is a second or even a third language. Though University entry is based on at least ten years of the study of English, standards of proficiency differ quite considerably as a result of inequalities in education. Because students need to improve their level of English proficiency I investigated the effectiveness of using senior students as tutor assistants in an academic development programme, the English Special Project, at UWC. This study aims at revealing that the tutor assistantships in the English Special Project can alleviate problems that occur with annual increases in student numbers under certain conditions. These are that: 1 prospective tutor assistants undergo proper tutor assistant training; 2 tutor assistants are committed to the course of academic development; 3 tutor assistants have the time available that is necessary for the task. In Chapter 1 give an insight into what this study is about, the reasons for conducting it and what my personal involvement with the ESP has been. In Chapter 2 I review some of the overseas and local literature on TA systems. In Chapter 3 I describe a case-study to evaluate the success of the TA system in the ESP with reference to academic development. I emphasize the intensive, individual care of and attention to first-year students. In an attempt to address the problem, the effectiveness of senior students as tutor assistants to assist in tutorial sessions is described. In Chapter 4 I discuss the value of TA intervention in the ESP at personal and social levels. Chapter 5 contains the general conclusions and my recommendations to improve the ESP.

This chapter provides an overview of the crisis surrounding school safety in South Africa in general and in Mamelodi East in particular. It outlines a case study of the context and crisis in primary schools there, laying bare the brutal truth of bullying, vandalism, and gangsterism in these schools. Research into senior primary, high, and primary schools led to an empirical investigation which included interviews with school principals. This confirmed a reality that is being ignored: the current education system is in fact creating more opportunities for violence, bullying, and impoverishment. While resources such as the National Safety Programme exist, their translation into real measures and interventions remains questionable. Amongst other interventions, a more relevant Afrocentric curriculum and training for teachers is recommended. All stakeholders in education, community, home, and industry need to be held responsible for this dire situation and to take collective action.

This research examines electronic commerce participation and attitudes by older Americans. Questionnaires were distributed at a large retirement community and several senior centers located in Pennsylvania. The sample of 110 respondents ranged in age from 52 to 87. Fifty nine percent reported purchasing an item online in the last six months. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was used and modified to examine the impact attitudes concerning ease of use, usefulness and trust had on electronic commerce usage. Usefulness and trust were found to have a positive, direct affect on usage. Ease of use had significant impacts on usefulness and trust had a significant impact on both ease of use and usefulness. The paper concludes with a discussion of these results, study limitations and directions for future research.

This chapter traces the eruption of the Black community in response to police brutality, noting July 24, 1964 as one of the era's very first “race riots” that occurred in Rochester. It discusses how a response to police brutality ended as an indictment of the economic conditions in Rochester's ghettoes. It also argues that the three-day rebellion, which ended with the calling up of the National Guard, became a watershed moment in the city of Rochester. The chapter describes the impressive degree of precision that those men and women, youth and senior citizens demonstrated in the rebellion when they attacked the police and private property with vengeance, but exempted community institutions and stores with a reputation for fairness. It investigates the 1964 uprising that seared Black Rochester into the nation's conscience, noting the uprising as the beginning of a series of Black rebellions that rocked the nation's urban centers in the 1960s.

The Internet has become an essential element of all society today. Those who can access the World Wide Web have become active participants in the Information Age. Unfortunately, many individuals throughout the world do not have ready access to the needed technology. Furthermore, they do not have the required knowledge and skills to use the technology and cannot participate actively. As a result, this has created a world of information haves and have-nots. In this chapter, after examining the concept of the digital divide, data is presented that shows that those with low incomes and those who are older have little access to technology and the use of computers. Low-income seniors are especially limited in their opportunities to own a computer, and they seldom have the skills needed to use one for e-mail, search the Internet, and so forth, even if they visit a public library where they could use a computer without any cost. Various approaches being used to help seniors learn how to use computers are described, andthen the chapter focuses on two projects that have proved to be successful in this effort. SeniorNet is a national organization that helps establish learning centers around the country. The approach used at one such center, located at Nova Southeastern University in South Florida, requires seniors to pay for their courses. A second project is known as SeniorComp and is supported by private foundation funds. Ten low-income senior citizens are selected for each group of seniors in this project. They are given a complete Dell computer system, and their tuition is paid to take four of the SeniorNet courses. At the end of the fourth course, ownership of the computer system is turned over to the individual participant. To date, the completion rate has been 100%. The approaches used can serve as models for others to modify and use in their own communities. By adopting a similar approach, the impact of the digital divide can be significantly reduced for those low-income seniors that participate in the project. In this way, this portion of the marginal community can be empowered.

As part of an initiative to promote community based engineering education, Santa Clara University engineering students undertook two ambitious senior design projects during the 2004-2005 school year that have direct impact on communities in El Salvador. The two projects were coordinated through our sister school, Universidad Centro Americana, in San Salvador, and also involved other local and international partners. The first project consisted of the design, purchase, and installation of a 3 kW solar powered water pumping system for Isla Zacatillo off the southwest coast of El Salvador. The new system replaces a standard electrical system that was dependent on an expensive undersea power connection to the mainland. The new system promises higher reliability and independence while also promoting sustainable energy and water solutions. The second project involved the design and construction of a prototype Human Powered Utility Vehicle (HPUV) for use in rural transportation of goods and people. The team faced a number of challenges in order to improve upon existing designs. The primary goals were to create a design that was robust, reliable, highly functional, and inexpensive. The paper will discuss the planning and logistics involved in accomplishing these international senior design projects, the challenging communication issues, the benefits to students and faculty beyond those of a conventional engineering design project, the impacts on the local society, and the final results of the projects.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is the flagship campus for the country’s most remote and westernmost state. It lies over two thousand nautical miles from the nearest continent, roughly in the center of the Pacific Ocean, the largest division of the world hydrosphere. Until 1893, Hawai’i was a sovereign kingdom. In 1959, the U.S. government annexed Hawaiʻi as the last and newest of its fifty states. This vivid context—Pacific, Asian, Hawaiian, American, postcolonial—constitutes both a geographical and cultural orientation. In view of these numerous, vivid conditions, our paper offers a single case study based on small projects underway at Mānoa, where the senior leadership of the university invited the newly established University of Hawai‘i Community Design Center to address the chronic disrepair of campus buildings and public spaces through low-cost, high-impact design interventions. The aim of these interventions is to improve perceived qualities of public space and campus character, which have suffered under the weight of the university’s half-billion dollar deferred maintenance backlog.

The nation’s first successful commercial waste-to-energy facility went on-line in 1975 and the industry has accumulated a three-decade long track record—operating safely, improving efficiencies, and meeting new, tougher environmental standards. The industry has matured and has learned from operating experience. But as the industry faces a revival, have we also learned to improve on the art of the deal? In the past, the standard lump sum RFP approach forced project sponsors and vendors into a type of Russian roulette—one-sided gamesmanship that opened one or both sides to unreasonable risk with willing partners in the construction and financial community. On today’s financial and financial risk playing field, though, Wheelabrator believes that the road to prosperity—for sponsor and vendor—is found in above-board open book negotiations. It’s a process designed to reduce economic risk and provides a more realistic picture of the actual cost of the project once it’s in the ground and operating. Mark Schwartz, Senior Manager of Business Development for Wheelabrator Technologies, and Cal Disney, Vice President of Whiting-Turner, will review the pitfalls of the past and discuss how the process can be improved when all parties participate in the design, permitting and construction oversight of a facility. They will discuss how the process can lead to contracts with fixed costs, lower capital costs, minimal risks and a public private partnership that gets the most value for taxpayer dollars.

Since 1981, the Community Environmental Monitoring Program (CEMP) has involved stakeholders directly in its daily operation and data collection, as well as in dissemination of information on radiological surveillance in communities surrounding the Nevada Test Site (NTS), the primary location where the United States (US) conducted nuclear testing until 1992. The CEMP is funded by the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration, and is administered by the Desert Research Institute (DRI) of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The CEMP provides training workshops for stakeholders involved in the program, and educational outreach to address public concerns about health risk and environmental impacts from past and ongoing NTS activities. The network includes 29 monitoring stations located across an approximately 160,000 km2 area of Nevada, Utah and California in the southwestern US. The principal radiological instruments are pressurized ion chambers for measuring gamma radiation, and particulate air samplers, primarily for alpha/beta detection. Stations also employ a full suite of meteorological instruments, allowing for improved interpretation of the effects of meteorological events on background radiation levels. Station sensors are wired to state-of-the-art dataloggers that are capable of several weeks of on-site data storage, and that work in tandem with a communications system that integrates DSL and wireless internet, land line and cellular phone, and satellite technologies for data transfer. Data are managed through a platform maintained by the Western Regional Climate Center (WRCC) that DRI operates for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The WRCC platform allows for near real-time upload and display of current monitoring information in tabular and graphical formats on a public web site. Archival data for each station are also available on-line, providing the ability to perform trending analyses or calculate site-specific exposure rates. This configuration also allows for remote programming and troubleshooting of sensors. Involvement of stakeholders in the monitoring process provides a number of benefits, including increased public confidence in monitoring results, as well as decreasing costs by more than 50 percent from when the program was managed entirely by U.S. federal employees. Additionally, the CEMP provides an ideal platform for testing new environmental sensors.

Abstract The levels of pollution present in the air have been dramatically increasing over the years due to the continuous emission of greenhouse gases such as CO2, CO, NOx and H2S, among others. The main source of these emissions is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation. This represents a tremendous risk to the populations located near the emission sources where people get exposed to dangerous concentrations of such gases on a daily basis. The lack of open real-time monitoring tools makes people unaware of the damage these pollutants cause to their health. This research proposes the development and implementation of a low-cost independent solution to keep the members of a community informed about concentration levels of air pollution due to local emissions. This tool must be easily accessible to the users so that the data about the number of particulates per million of a specific gas within a zone of interest can be viewed at any time. The proposed solution consists of a sensor network, covering the widest possible area, with respect to the point of interest. The collected data is sent to a cloud server, which operates as storage center and in which the data can be latter accessed for subsequent analysis. The measurements are sent to the server by means of a wireless communication protocol, carried out by a General Packet Radio Service, GPRS, communication module connected to each station. In this way, the coverage of the network is not limited by issues such as the use of local area networks which at the same time facilitates the transportation and installation of the stations at any desired measurement site. Since each station can collect large amounts of data during a given period of time, it was necessary to implement techniques such as Big Data in order to extract important information and to identify patterns from the data such as the areas having the highest concentration of gases and possible correlations with other variables such as local weather conditions. This information could be used to support the making of decisions that benefit the communities impacted by air pollution, for example the early triggering of bad air quality alarms or the development of policies to regulate industry operation that can potentially impact the health of neighboring communities. A pilot case study was implemented in the city of Floridablanca, Colombia, to demonstrate the monitoring of the emissions of hydrogen sulfide of a big wastewater processing plant.

The work presented in this paper essentially consists of modeling and analysis of energy and exergy efficiency of a community solar cooker, installed at Holistic Health and Food Centre, I.I.T. Delhi India in March 1998. The cooker is meant for community cooking, which consists of a linear parabolic concentrator with concentration ratio of 20. The experiments, on this cooker, were performed in summer and winter, both the climatic conditions. The measurements were done by using microprocessor based on line data acquisition system using class I solar pyranometer and Pt. 100 temperature sensors. Based on the experimental data obtained by testing and performance evaluation of this concentrating type of solar cooker, the energy and exergy efficiencies are calculated. From an analysis of the experimental values the average efficiency of this cooker is measured as 14% only. The different losses contributes to low efficiency are optical losses (16%), geometrical losses (30%) and thermal losses (35%) accounts for more than, 80% energy waste from the radiation coming to the reflector. The rest of the losses are due to edge losses etc. the maximum temperature of water was recorded 98°C during water heating tests.

This survey covers the topic of robust multi-view data representation, centered around several major visual applications. First of all, we formulate a unified learning framework which is able to model most existing multi-view learning and domain adaptation in this line. Following this, we conduct a comprehensive discussion across these two problems by reviewing the algorithms along these two topics, including multi-view clustering, multi-view classification, zero-shot learning, and domain adaption. We further present more practical challenges in multi-view data analysis. Finally, we discuss future research including incomplete, unbalance, large-scale multi-view learning. In this article, the authors propose that California’s Seal of Biliteracy for high school seniors can serve as an exemplar to advocate for the continued development of bilingual skills in university, graduate-level students—and counseling students in particular. Citing literature that points to the need for linguistic diversity among counselors in school and community agencies, the authors describe the efforts taken by the Counseling Program in the School of Education at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) in partnership with LMU’s Center for Equity for English Learners to address the need. Their pilot of a Certificate of Bilingual Counseling in Fieldwork (CBC-F) involved the development and testing of proficiency rubrics that adhered to current standards for teaching foreign languages and simultaneously measured professional competencies in counseling. Results of the CBC-F pilot with five female Latina students in the counseling program at LMU in the spring of 2017 appeared promising and were described in detail. These findings have implications for preparing and certifying professionals in other fields with linguistic and cultural competencies in response to current demographic shifts.
