Annotation:
Cyberbullying can be defined as the wilful and repeated harm inflicted upon others through the medium of electronic text (Patchin, 2002). Typically, cyberbullying involves sending harassing or threatening e-mails and instant messages, posting derogatory comments of someone on a website, or physically threatening or intimidating someone online. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between adolescents’ experience with cyberbullying and their level of self-esteem. There is a considerable amount of support, which has been accrued over the years, alluding to the fact that incidents involving bullying have damaging consequences upon adolescent development. One such correlation that has earned a considerable amount of interest is the consequence of bullying on selfesteem. Self-esteem can be defined as a favourable or unfavourable attitude toward the self. The current research study employed an exploratory, descriptive quantitative research design. Quantitative research focuses on using empirical data with findings based on certainty. Results are accumulated through formal measurements using prearranged instruments and analysed through the use of statistical measures. Research consisted of the completion of a biographical questionnaire which provided data on the demographics of the sample. The cyber bully/victim questionnaire provided information about the prevalence of cyberbullying behaviours among the participants. James Battle’s Culture-Free Self-Esteem Inventory was utilised to measure the construct of self-esteem. Participants were selected by means of non-probability sampling and comprised of a sample of grade seven learners enrolled at a primary school in George, Western Cape. Quantitativedata, obtained from the self-report questionnaires, were analysed through the use of descriptive statistics, ANOVA statistics and a Pearson R correlation coefficient. One key finding revealed that over fifty percent (51.40%) of the grade 7 participants had been involved in cyberbullying behaviours. No significant relationship was found to exist between cyberbullying and selfesteem in the grade 7 sample. Self-esteem scores did not vary significantly among the cyberbullies, cybervictims, cyberbully-victims and bystanders in the sample.

In the United States, obesity is on the rise while physical activity is declining. Educational funding cuts result in less time and resources for physical education in schools and youth are increasingly more sedentary with technological advances. Advance practice nurses have a role in promoting physical activity and health in this population. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between physical activity and self-esteem in females during late adolescence and the effect of perceived benefits and barriers to physical activity on this relationship. E-mail invitations to participate in an online survey were sent to female undergraduate students at a university in the Southeastern US. Physical activity, self-esteem, and perceived benefits and barriers were assessed using the 60-minute MVPA screening measure, the Rosenberg Self- Esteem Scale, and the Exercise Benefits/Barriers Scale respectively. A sample of 536 usable surveys was obtained. Only 22% of participants were currently meeting physical activity guidelines. Self-esteem was moderately high. The greatest barriers to exercise were time and convenience. There was no significant relationship between physical activity and self-esteem. A low, but significant negative correlation was found between self-esteem and BMI and with self-esteem and perceived barriers to exercise. Self-esteem was positively correlated with overall perception of exercise. There was a small, but significant correlation between reported physical activity and overall perception of exercise and a negative correlation with barriers to exercise.

Early adolescence is characterized by changes in relationships with peers, teachers, and parents, the personality becomes more autonomous, begins to separate from parents, chooses their life guidelines. Separation in adolescence plays a significant role at the inception of psychological maturity, adaptation to new living conditions, teaches to be responsible for actions, life, to make a decision. A certain stuck at this stage leads to dependence on parents, fear of making decisions independently, managing their lives.

Annotation:
The pursuit of an ideal self and related goals is a constant throughout the lifespan, and a great deal of motivation and self-regulation is required in order to move closer to this ideal. For adolescents in particular, the ability to harness enough motivation to pursue important goals can be a struggle. The current thesis examined the ways in which having close affirming relationships may enhance young people’s ability to pursue their goals, and move closer to their ideal selves. An established inter-personal model of motivation, the Michelangelo Phenomenon, was used as a backdrop for a series of four empirical studies, each building on the previous to further clarify the contributions self-esteem and relationship affirmation make to goal pursuit. The first study extended the concept of relationship affirmation for use in relationships other than romantic couples, to determine whether all forms of affirming relationships could be beneficial to goal pursuit and movement towards the ideal self. This being the case, along with relationship affirmation mediating the positive relation between self-esteem and goal pursuit motivation, the next study extended this further by applying the theory to adolescents undertaking their last years of school. A three time-point school-based study was carried out, testing the mediation hypothesis in adolescents from four Greater London schools. Three empirical chapters describe findings from this study, with Chapters 3 and 4 examining the first time points cross-sectionally, and Chapter 5 analysing the first and last time points longitudinally. The findings revealed relationship affirmation to be a strong predictor of motivation to pursue ideal-relevant goals, and of life satisfaction. The mediation model was supported for the most part, although the pattern was not found longitudinally. The findings reveal the central importance of social support, and particularly the presence of affirming relationships, to enable adolescents to pursue important goals.

Fagg, Jamie. „Neighbourhood deprivation and self-esteem : is there equalisation in early adolescence?“ Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2009. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/549.

Annotation:
Background - Residents of more deprived and socially fragmented neighbourhoods are more likely to suffer from poor physical health and severe psychiatric morbidity than individuals living in more affluent and socially cohesive neighbourhoods. However, this pattern is less clear for more common psychological outcomes such as depression, anxiety and psychological traits such as self-esteem in early adolescence. In particular, the relationship between adolescent mental health and psychological traits may vary by national context. Two hypotheses broadly frame these variations: the deprivation amplification hypothesis and the socio-economic equalisation in youth hypothesis. Specifically, deprivation amplification is supported for adolescents in the U.S, while equalisation hypothesis appears to be supported outside that national context. Aims - The study aims to extend existing international research by addressing three research questions using data on adolescents aged 10-15 in the UK and Canada. 1. Is there support for socio-economic equalisation in early adolescent self-esteem in the UK and Canada across household socio-economic status and neighbourhood deprivation? 2. Is support for equalisation consistent across the socio-geographic levels of family, neighbourhood, region and nation? 3. Is there evidence for prospective associations between adolescent self-esteem and socio-geographic processes of neighbourhood context, composition, health selective migration and socio-geographic mobility in the UK and Canada? 6 Methods - Two longitudinal datasets, the British Youth Panel (UK) and the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth (Canada) were analysed using multilevel logistic regression and cluster-adjusted multinomial logistic regression models. Results – Contrary to prevailing deprivation amplification hypothesis, self-esteem was not inversely associated with neighbourhood deprivation and social fragmentation neighbourhoods in both countries either prior to, or after controlling for individual and family characteristics. In fact, living in the least deprived 20% of Canadian neighbourhoods was associated with lower self-esteem in boys. Other than this, neighbourhood composition accounted for all significant associations with self-esteem. However, low teenage self-esteem was associated with subsequent household socio-geographic mobility, an effect explained by family factors. In addition, moving to more socially fragmented neighbourhoods is associated with low self-esteem but moving to more materially deprived neighbourhoods is not, independently of individual and family variables. Discussion and conclusions – Results are discussed with reference to the implications for deprivation amplification and socio-economic equalisation in youth hypotheses. Contributions to health geography and limitations of the study are then addressed before policy implications are considered.

Annotation:
Purpose: A growing number of people from many countries are traveling internationally to obtain medical care. The purpose of this study is twofold: (a) to explore the experiences of international travel for the purpose of medical or dental care from the perspective of patients from Alaska and (b) to develop insight and understanding of the essence of this phenomenon. Study Design and Methods: The study is conceptually oriented within a model of health seeking behavior. Using a qualitative, interpretive phenomenological design, a purposive sample of fifteen Alaskan medical tourists who have experienced international travel for the objective of medical or dental care were individually interviewed. The data was analyzed using a hermeneutic process of inquiry to uncover the essential meaning of the experience. Results: The hermeneutic analysis of the participants’ narrative accounts allowed the themes of Motivation, Research, Obtaining Care, Follow-up, Advice, and Future Health Care to emerge. Sub-themes are used to further categorize data for increased understanding. The thematic analysis provides insight into the essential structure of the lived experience of the medical tourism phenomenon. Improved understanding of medical tourism provides further information about a modern approach to health seeking behavior. The conceptual definition and model for health seeking behavior are updated. Implications: Increased understanding of the experience of obtaining health care internationally and motivation for this nature of health seeking behavior from the patient perspective is needed in the global health care arena. Nursing professionals will benefit by being better able to advocate for patients’ choices in health seeking behavior, counsel regarding medical tourism options, provide follow-up health care after medical tourism, and actively participate in global health policy discussions.

The purpose of this study was to explore the correlation between self-perceived information seeking skills and self-esteem in adolescents and, further, to determine whether this correlation varied according to race and gender. Tenth-grade students from three public high schools in a Midwestern city were given two instruments. Self-perceived information seeking skills were measured using a modified version of the Information Skills Checklist from High Plains Regional Technology in Education Consortium's Profiler website. Self-esteem was measured by the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale, which is designed for students 12 years of age and over. The scale has six separate measures of self-esteem: physical, moral-ethical self, personal self, family self, social self and academic self. These six measures are used to determine overall level of self-esteem. The results showed a statistically significant correlation between self-perceived information seeking skills and at least one facet of self-esteem for all groups measured, with one exception. African American males were the only adolescents to show no correlation between scores from these two instruments. It is hoped that this research will ultimately be used to develop policies regarding the development of information seeking skills in disenfranchised groups.

Annotation:
Black adolescent identity formation was studied within the frameworks of Erikson's psychosocial theory and structural family systems theory. Ego identity was measured by the Revised Version of the EOM-EIS, an instrument based on Erikson's theoretical formulations. Family structure was measured by FACES III and a measure of self-esteem was obtained using Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. It was hypothesized that a significant relationship would exist between ego identity and family structure after controlling for self-esteem and demographic variables. Two hundred thirty-seven urban black adolescents participated in the study. Multiple regression analysis was utilized to test the hypotheses in this study. The results supported a relationship between ego identity and family structure. The results further revealed a positive relationship between high family cohesion (enmeshment) and high identity which was surprising from both Eriksonian and structural perspectives. On the other hand, this finding offered support for the cultural component of ego identity and underscored the importance of recognizing strengths in family structures even if they differ from those which family theorists and clinicians expect would work best. Self-esteem was found to be a significant predictor of ego identity but failed to differentiate among the four ego identity statuses. Females reported significantly less identity diffusion than males, providing evidence that gender differences exist in ego identity development.

Annotation:
Self-concept clarity reflects the consistency or structure of self-concepts, and is distinct yet related to self-esteem or valence of feelings towards the self. However, research on self-concept clarity is novel and mostly conducted in adults only; studies on self-concept clarity in adolescence are limited. In the present study, self-concept clarity was examined as a related yet distinct construct from self-esteem in middle school. Factor structure and criterion validity of self-concept clarity and self-esteem was established by using factor analysis and examining associations with self- and teacher-reported psychological, behavioral, and academic indices of adjustment. Moreover, mean level gender, grade, and ethnic differences are discussed. Overall, results suggest that assessing both structure (self-concept clarity) and valence (self-esteem) of self-concepts allows for the most thorough understanding of adolescent adjustment. Specifically, self-concept clarity and self-esteem emerged as separate factors with unique associations with the adjustment indices. Findings are expected to extend past research on self-concept clarity to adolescence, and contribute to the study of sense of self and adjustment in middle school.

Annotation:
The primary objective of the current study was to propose and test a model for conceptualizing changes that occur as a result of adventure-based therapy (ABT), using self-efficacy theory as the conceptual foundation. Other objectives were to test the effects of ABT on depressive symptomatology and related psychosocial variables (e.g., anxiety, self-esteem). One-hundred and nine college freshmen participated in the screening procedure. Subjects who indicated mild to severe depressive symptomatology on a self-report measure and did not report past history of trauma were invited to participate in the study. Forty-one individuals were randomly assigned to either the adventure-based therapy (ABT) condition (i.e., a one-day ropes course experience) or to a placebo-control condition (i.e., an extended walk outdoors in a group). Subjects were divided into two cohorts, each with treatment and control groups, because of safety requirements related to capacity on the ropes course. Self-report instruments were completed immediately prior to participation (i.e., pretest), immediately following participation (i.e., posttest), and at 2-weeks and 2-months post participation. Primary multivariate analyses of variance performed on state and trait dependent measures did not yield statistically significant interactions; therefore, results indicated that ABT may not significantly decrease depressive and anxious symptomatology in late adolescents with depressive symptomatology. However, data were further analyzed for exploration in light of the generally low statistical power and group differences suggested by graphic displays of data. Exploratory analyses suggested that ABT may increase efficacy for coping with anxiety created by novel situations and efficacy for working and problem-solving in a group. It was therefore suggested that self-efficacy theory warrants further consideration as a theoretical framework for explaining changes that occur as a result of ABT. In addition, exploratory analyses suggested that ABT may also reduce anxiety and general psychological distress. Finally, depressive symptomatology decreased for individuals in the ABT treatment group and the placebo-control group according to exploratory analyses; however, there were no differences between groups. Further exploration of the potential effects of ABT on depressive and anxious symptomatology and general psychological distress is warranted.

The purpose of this study was to replicate the findings of McDonald and McKinney (1988) who found a significant relationship between low self-esteem and exclusive dating among high school students. Its purpose was also to study components that might lead an adolescent with low self-esteem to seek a steady dating relationship and to discern if any gender differences in this compensation occurred. Measures designed to determine: activity involvement; dating status; the person (parent or peer) an adolescent was most likely to talk to; and self-esteem were administered to 122 high school students. Analysis did not replicate the original findings by McDonald and McKinney. Also the only variable found to have a significiant interaction with self-esteem was activity involvement. Interesting gender differences were found in the relationship between who a person talks to and dating style. Boys, who were involved in an exclusive or steady dating relationship, were significantly more likely to turn to peers for conversation than were boys not involved in this type of dating. No such relationship existed for girls, however. It is hypothesized that population differences lead to the non-replication of the previous study and that for some boys, intimacy may only be found in the dating relationship.

The aim of the current study is to present multi-faceted instruments to measure the effectiveness of a competency-based approach to Art Therapy for improving the self-esteem of a pre-adolescent girl. The theoretical framework for this approach applies well established Art Therapy and Family Art Therapy theory and practice to contemporary clinical practices in individual Family Therapy. The Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC) (Harter, 1985b), House-Tree-Person Drawing Test (H-T-P) (Buck, 1970), the subject's self-ratings, ratings of the subject's competence by her mother and her teacher, and ratings of the subject's artwork by objective judges are employed in a Pretest-Posttest research design strategy (Huck, Cannier & Bounds, 1974). The findings of the current study present the competency-based Art Therapy approach as a useful form of assessment and therapeutic modality when working with pre-adolescents. Improvement in the subject's self-esteem is demonstrated in the findings with minor gains perceived by one of her caregivers.

Unhealthy eating during adolescence has shown to have multiple negative consequences. The aim of this paper is to acquire knowledge of dietary habits in adolescence and consider how this behaviour varies across different groups of adolescents. Correlations between dietary habits, age and gender have several times been found, in terms of girls eating healthier than boys, and the intake of healthy food decreasing with age. Additionally, adolescents of low socioeconomic position are at higher risk for having unhealthy dietary habits, while adolescents who are physically active seem to eat healthier. Further, it has been shown that low self-esteem in adolescence is associated with eating disorders, representing both restrained eating, but also binge eating. The mentioned correlations can be understood and explained using individual psychological models of health behaviour, like the KAP model and social cognitive theory.

Ierfino, Diana J. „An initial evaluation of an online compassion focused therapy intervention for self-esteem“. Thesis, Canterbury Christ Church University, 2017. http://create.canterbury.ac.uk/16056/.

To date, no research has evaluated the efficacy of a web-based Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) intervention for young people. The current pilot study aimed to begin the process of evaluating the effectiveness and acceptability of a web-based CFT intervention by creating an online website youngmindbekind.com, and obtaining an initial effect-size estimate for a full scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) trial. A two-arm, pilot, RCT comparing a web-based CFT intervention to a waiting list control condition (WL) was carried out with young people aged 16 to 25 from a non-clinical population. Participants had asynchronous contact from the researcher once a week, solely via the internet, to provide instructions for modules. Self-report measures of self-esteem, self-compassion, mental health and quality of life were completed at baseline and post-intervention/wait-list. In addition, the intervention group received them again at a 4 week follow-up. A total of 40 participants were randomised to either web-based CFT (n=20) or to the WL group (n=20). Study attrition was 12 with 70% of participants completing the post-intervention/wait-list questionnaires. Pre-post change scores on all measures did not significantly differ between groups. The estimated, post-intervention, between groups, effect size for the primary outcome measure, namely the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale, was d=0.17, with a 95% confidence interval of (0.92, 0.57). Qualitative feedback from questionnaires identified several themes relating to understanding compassion, activating compassion, finding the intervention acceptable, and future recommendations for the website. YoungMindBeKind.com appears to be an intervention capable of engaging young people. Given the relatively small effect size estimate, further pilot work to improve the intervention and/or target young people with lower self-esteem may be helpful prior to a full-scale RCT.
