ABSTRACT The secreted proteolytic activity of Aspergillus fumigatus is of potential importance as a virulence factor and in the industrial hydrolysis of protein sources. The A. fumigatus genome contains sequences that could encode a five-member gene family that produces proteases in the sedolisin family (MEROPS S53). Four putative secreted sedolisins with a predicted 17- to 20-amino-acid signal sequence were identified and termed SedA to SedD. SedA produced heterologously in Pichia pastoris was an acidic endoprotease. Heterologously produced SedB, SedC, and SedD were tripeptidyl-peptidases (TPP) with a common specificity for tripeptide-p-nitroanilide substrates at acidic pHs. Purified SedB hydrolyzed the peptide Ala-Pro-Gly-Asp-Arg-Ile-Tyr-Val-His-Pro-Phe to Arg-Pro-Gly, Asp-Arg-Ile, and Tyr-Val-His-Pro-Phe, thereby confirming TPP activity of the enzyme. SedB, SedC, and SedD were detected by Western blotting in culture supernatants of A. fumigatus grown in a medium containing hemoglobin as the sole nitrogen source. A degradation product of SedA also was observed. A search for genes encoding sedolisin homologues in other fungal genomes indicates that sedolisin gene families are widespread among filamentous ascomycetes.

Surface texturing has brought significant improvements in the functional properties of parts and components. Sinker electro discharge machining (SEDM) is one of the processes which generates great texturing results at different scale. An electrode is needed to reproduce the geometry to be textured. Some geometries are difficult or impossible to achieve on an electrode using conventional and even unconventional machining methods. This work sets out the advances made in the manufacturing of copper electrodes for electro erosion by additive manufacturing, and their subsequent application to the functional texturing of Al-Cu UNS A92024-T3 alloy. A combined procedure of digital light processing (DLP) additive manufacturing, sputtering and micro-electroforming (AMSME), has been used to produce electrodes. Also, a specific laboratory equipment has been developed to reproduce details on a microscopic scale. Shells with outgoing spherical geometries pattern have been manufactured. AMSME process has shown ability to copper electrodes manufacturing. A highly detailed surface on a micrometric scale have been achieved. Copper shells with minimum thickness close to 300 µm have been tested in sinker electro discharge machining (SEDM) and have been shown very good performance in surface finishing operations. The method has shown great potential for use in surfaces texturing.

The development of prediction tools for production performance and the lifespan of shale gas reservoirs has been a focus for petroleum engineers. Several decline curve models have been developed and compared with data from shale gas production. To accurately forecast the estimated ultimate recovery for shale gas reservoirs, consistent and accurate decline curve modelling is required. In this paper, the current decline curve models are evaluated using the goodness of fit as a measure of accuracy with field data. The evaluation found that there are advantages in using the current DCA models; however, they also have limitations associated with them that have to be addressed. Based on the accuracy assessment conducted on the different models, it appears that the Stretched Exponential Decline Model (SEDM) and Logistic Growth Model (LGM), followed by the Extended Exponential Decline Model (EEDM), the Power Law Exponential Model (PLE), the Doung’s Model, and lastly, the Arps Hyperbolic Decline Model, provide the best fit with production data.

Objective. Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SEDT) is a rare hereditary bone disease characterized by spinal and epiphyseal anomalies. We identified the disease by gene sequencing in a Chinese pedigree with SEDT. Methods. We extracted genomic DNA from five members of a four-generation Chinese SEDT kindred with three affected males and then analyzed the genetic mutation by PCR and DNA sequencing. Results. DNA sequencing showed that the genetic missense mutation occurred one bp upstream of exon 6 in the SEDL gene in two families, and a heterozygous mutation was found in a female carrier. In addition, no mutation was found in the other members of the family. Conclusion. SEDT in this family was caused by a G/C missense mutation in exon 6 of the SEDL gene, previously not shown to be associated with X-linked SEDT.

SEDL is an evolutionarily highly conserved protein in eukaryotic organisms. Deletions or point mutations in theSEDLgene are responsible for the genetic disease spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SEDT), an X-linked skeletal disorder. SEDL has been identified as a component of the transport protein particle (TRAPP), critically involved in endoplasmic reticulum-to-Golgi vesicle transport. Herein, we report the 2.4 Å resolution structure of SEDL, which reveals an unexpected similarity to the structures of the N-terminal regulatory domain of two SNAREs, Ykt6p and Sec22b, despite no sequence homology to these proteins. The similarity and the presence of unusually many solvent-exposed apolar residues of SEDL suggest that it serves regulatory and/or adaptor functions through multiple protein-protein interactions. Of the four known missense mutations responsible for SEDT, three mutations (S73L, F83S, V130D) map to the protein interior, where the mutations would disrupt the structure, and the fourth (D47Y) on a surface at which the mutation may abrogate functional interactions with a partner protein.

Pseudoidium kalanchoes, retrieved from powdery mildew on Kalanchoe spp. in Asia, has been re-examined and reassessed based on phylogenetic analyses of the ITS and 28S rDNA regions. The results confirmed that sequences retrieved from Asian Kalanchoe powdery mildew have 100% congruence with sequences obtained from Erysiphe sedi on Sedum spp. A German collection of P. kalanchoes on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana was morphologically and genetically examined and analyzed and is designated as neotype with an ex-neotype reference sequence. Morphologically, the asexual morph on Kalanchoe spp. agrees with the asexual morph of E. sedi. Consequently, P. kalanchoes is reduced to synonymy with E. sedi.

Current time domain facilities are discovering hundreds of new galactic and extra-galactic transients every week. Classifying the ever-increasing number of transients is challenging, yet crucial to furthering our understanding of their nature, discovering new classes, and ensuring sample purity, for instance, for Supernova Ia cosmology. The Zwicky Transient Facility is one example of such a survey. In addition, it has a dedicated very-low resolution spectrograph, the SEDMachine, operating on the Palomar 60-inch telescope. This spectrograph’s primary aim is object classification. In practice most, if not all, transients of interest brighter than ∼19 mag are typed. This corresponds to approximately 10–15 targets a night. In this paper, we present a fully automated pipeline for the SEDMachine. This pipeline has been designed to be fast, robust, stable and extremely flexible. pysedm enables the fully automated spectral extraction of a targeted point source object in less than five minutes after the end of the exposure. The spectral color calibration is accurate at the few percent level. In the 19 weeks since pysedm entered production in early August of 2018, we have classified, among other objects, about 400 Type Ia supernovae and 140 Type II supernovae. We conclude that low resolution, fully automated spectrographs such as the “SEDMachine with pysedm” installed on 2-m class telescopes within the southern hemisphere could allow us to automatically and simultaneously type and obtain a redshift for most (if not all) bright transients detected by LSST within z < 0.2, notably potentially all Type Ia Supernovae. In comparison with the current SEDM design, this would require higher spectral resolution (R ≳ 1000) and slightly improved throughput. With this perspective in mind, pysedm is designed to easily be adaptable to any IFU-like spectrograph.

Aluminum Nitride (AlN) ceramic materials have high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation, prompting consideration of their use as a semiconducting material. Although AlN should be machined with a high accuracy of form and dimension to achieve products and components with requisite precision, mechanical and other machining methods such as the laser method cannot be used because of the brittleness and high thermal conductivity of AIN. Recently, we have succeeded in machining many insulating ceramics by sinking (SEDM) and Wire-Electrical Discharge Machining (WEDM) with the assisting electrode method. We have already machined many insulating ceramic materials such as Si3N4, ZrO2 and Al2O3. However, inferior machining characteristics were obtained with AlN than with other materials. In this study, the effects of several electrical discharge conditions were examined to obtain better machining properties, such as high material removal rate and a low electrode wear ratio. It was found that machining time decreased with an increase in capacitance, while the electrode wear ratio increased. The electrode wear ratio of the W electrode was low, suggesting that it is suited for accurate machining of AlN. Additionally, the electrically conductive layer was analyzed using Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). As a result, the architectural component of the EDMed AlN surface is considered mostly Al that is resolution of the workpiece. Therefore, in the EDM of AlN using the assisting electrode method, machinability using deionized water may be superior to dielectric oil. To investigate the effect of the dielectric working fluid, AlN was machined using deionized water and dielectric oil. In the case of machining with deionized water, the removal rate was faster and electrode wear ratio was lower, compared to dielectric oil.

Lo scopo del presente lavoro č indagare i fattori che determinano la mobilitŕ degli immatricolati alle universitŕ statali italiane. L'espansione del sistema di offerta e la decentralizzazione delle sedi didattiche hanno favorito una migliore accessibilitŕ all'istruzione universitaria, accentuando l'attenzione sui fattori che condizionano la scelta della sede universitaria da parte degli studenti. Il paper esplora l'effetto "attrattivitŕ" delle sedi universitarie, definita a partire dalle caratteristiche dell'offerta formativa e da quelle del contesto urbano (qualitŕ della vita, densitŕ abitativa) in cui sono ubicate. Per analizzare la relazione tra caratteristiche delle sedi universitarie e mobilitŕ degli studenti viene utilizzato un modello gravitazionale. Le elaborazioni mostrano che l'offerta formativa, la qualitŕ della vita, la disponibilitŕ di sussidi e la densitŕ abitativa influenzano positivamente la mobilitŕ degli studenti, mentre la distanza agisce da fattore inerziale.

The new disease reduced the market value of the infected ornamentals and required chemical control. The pathogen produced conidia singly on 2- to 3-celled conidiophores occurring on the ectophytic hyphae. Conidia were subcylindrical, measured 27 to 36 μm × 13 to 17 μm, and contained no fibrosin bodies. Germinating conidia produced a short germ tube, 5 to 30 μm, terminating in a lobed appressorium. Hyphal appressoria were lobed to multi-lobed, opposite or spread along the hyphae. Cleistothecia were not found. Based on conidial characteristics, the pathogen was identified as Erysiphe sedi Braun. To confirm pathogenicity, potted healthy S. spectabile plants were placed near infected plants in the greenhouse. In addition, detached S. spectabile leaves were inoculated with the pathogen by touching them to powdery mildew colonies and then placed in plates filled with one layer of polystyrene balls floated in water. Plates were covered and kept in the laboratory. Uninfected potted plants kept in another greenhouse and noninoculated detached leaves served as controls. After 1 week, powdery mildew appeared on all infected plants and leaves exposed to or inoculated with the pathogen. The pathogen was morphologically identical to the original fungus. No symptoms were observed on the controls. E. sedi is a common Asiatic powdery mildew species infecting many crassulaceous plants (1,2) and was introduced to Eastern Europe from Asia (2). Background:Sedentary behavior (SED) has been measured almost exclusively by self-reported total SED or television time in longitudinal studies. This manuscript aimed to compare self-reported vs. objectively measured SED.Methods:Among overweight and obese young adults enrolled in a weight loss trial, baseline SED was assessed by 3 methods: 1) a questionnaire assessing 8 common SEDs (SEDQ), 2) 1 question assessing SED from the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (SEDGPAQ), and 3) a monitor worn on the arm (SEDOBJ). In addition, television time (SEDTV) was isolated from the SEDQ. SED measures were compared using Spearman’s correlations, signed-rank tests, and Bland-Altman plots.Results:In 448 participants, SEDQ and SEDGPAQ were only weakly associated with SEDOBJ (rs = 0.21; P < .001, rs = 0.32; P < .001, respectively). Compared with SEDOBJ, SEDQ more often overestimated SEDOBJ (median difference: 1.1 hours/day; P < .001), while SEDGPAQ more often underestimated SEDOBJ (median difference: –0.7 hours/day; P < .001). The correlation between SEDTV and SEDOBJ was not significantly different from 0 (rs = 0.08; P = .08).Conclusions:SEDQ and SEDGPAQ were weakly correlated with, and significantly different from, SEDOBJ in overweight and obese young adults. SEDTV was not related to SEDOBJ. The poor associations of self-reported and objectively measured SED could affect interpretation and comparison across studies relating SED to adverse health outcomes.

Realizamos un trabajo monográfico e inédito de uno de los pocos ejemplos que se conservan de esta tipología de establecimiento en Barcelona.

SEDT (spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda) is a late-onset X-linked recessive skeletal dysplasia caused by mutations in the gene SEDL coding for sedlin. In the present paper, we investigated four missense mutations observed in SEDT and compare biochemical and cellular characteristics relative to the wild-type protein to address the mechanism of disease and to gain insight into the function of the sedlin protein. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemical experiments in mouse growth plates revealed sedlin to be predominantly expressed in proliferating and hypertrophic chondrocytes. Cell culture studies showed that the wild-type protein localized predominantly in the vicinity of the nucleus and the Golgi, with further localization around the cytoplasm, whereas mutation resulted in mislocalization. The D47Y mutant was expressed similarly to the wild-type, but the S73L, F83S and V130D mutants showed particularly low levels of expression that were rescued in the presence of the proteasome inhibitor MG132 (benzyloxycarbonyl-leucylleucylleucinal). Furthermore, whereas the D47Y mutant folded similarly and had similar stability to the wild-type sedlin as shown by CD and fluorescence, the S73L, F83S and V130D mutants all misfolded during expression. Two independent assays showed that the D47Y mutation resulted in an increased affinity for the transport protein particle component Bet3 compared with the wild-type sedlin. Our results suggest that the sedlin mutations S73L, F83S and V130D cause SEDT by sedlin misfolding, whereas the D47Y mutation may influence normal TRAPP (transport protein particle) dynamics.

La sarcoidosi è una malattia infiammatoria granulomatosa poco comune, ad eziologia sconosciuta, caratterizzata da abnorme incremento dell'immunità cellulo mediata nei siti di lesione, sotto forma di noduli sarcoidei. Il sesso più colpito è quello femminile con età di insorgenza compresa fra i 20 e i 40 anni. Sono state formulate diverse ipotesi eziopatogenetiche nel tentativo di identificare l'agente capace di coinvolgere i meccanismi responsabili dell'accumulo di linfociti e di macrofagi nella sede di lesione. Oltre alla teoria similtumorale alcuni autori propongono che alla base del processo vi sia un'anomala risposta immunitaria ereditaria e/o acquisita ad uno stimolo virale. Il maggior numero degli studiosi propende per una terza ipotesi che prevederebbe un antigene specifico, la cui eliminazione risulterebbe difficoltosa, innescando una cronica reazione di risposta immunitaria. La diagnosi di sarcoidosi si basa attualmente sulla positività scintigrafica di Gallio 67 con accumulo in sedi polmonari e delle ghiandole salivari accoppiata alla ricerca del SACE (enzima sierico di conversione dell'angiotensina). Il coinvolgimento del Sistema Nervoso Centrale in corso di Sarcoidosi avviene in una percentuale variabile dal 10 al 20% dei casi, talvolta di solo riscontro autoptico. Una sintomatologia d'esordio di tipo neurologico avviene nel 2,5% dei casi. La neurosarcoidosi isolata è rara e costituisce il 5% dei casi. La diagnosi di neurosarcoidosi isolata è spesso difficile per l'impossibilità di giungere ad una diagnosi di certezza non ricorrendo al dato bioptico. Nel SNC le sedi di localizzazione possono essere molteplici, interessando strutture in rapporto alla presenza del sistema reticolo istiocitario, quali il peduncolo vascolare ipofisario, l'ependima, i plessi corioidei, le leptomeningi. Il nostro studio si basa sull'esperienza personale di 7 casi, esaminati mediante RM prima e dopo somministrazione di Gadolinio DTPA. In 5 casi su 7 è stata rilevata la localizzazione del processo a livello dell'asse ipotalamo ipofisario e di tali pazienti 3 presentavano sintomi riferibili alla sede di lesione (diabete insipido, amenorrea, riduzione della libido, obesità). In 3 pazienti sono state rinvenute lesioni meningee a livello del seno cavernoso e della meninge corticale. In 1 paziente infine erano presenti localizzazioni multiple rilevate in successione temporale: peduncolo ipofisario, meninge corticale, epifisi, VII° e VIII° nervo cranico di sinistra e quindi del II° e VIIP° di destra. I rilievi neuroradiologici non sono patognomonici ma mimano lesioni di diversa eziologia nelle sedi succitate. Nella localizzazione al SNC di malattia sarcoidosica sistemica la RM conferma il dubbio clinico di lesioni in sedi tipiche. D'altro canto in assenza di altre localizzazioni la RM ha infatti solo il ruolo di diagnosi di esistenza di lesione. Solo nei casi di scomparsa o riduzione di lesioni meningee e dell'asse ipotalamo ipofisario dopo terapia steroidea mediante un accurato studio longitudinale di immagini, la RM puo' supportare l'ipotesi diagnostica di neurosarcoidosi isolata.

The effects of incremental exercise on appetite, energy intake (EI), expenditure (EE) and balance (EB) in lean men and women were examined. Six men (age 29·7 (sd5·9) years, weight 75·2 (sd15·3) kg, height 1·75 (sd0·11) m) and six women (age 24·7 (sd5·9) years, weight 66·7 (sd9·10) kg, height 1·70 (sd0·09) m) were each studied three times during a 16 d protocol, corresponding to no additional exercise (Nex), moderate-intensity exercise (Mex; 1·5–2·0 MJ/d) and high-intensity exercise (Hex; 3·0–4·0 MJ/d) regimens. Subjects were fed to EB during days 1–2, and during days 3–16 they fedad libitumfrom a medium-fat diet of constant composition. Daily EE, assessed using the doubly labelled water method, was 9·2, 11·6 and 13·7 MJ/d (P < 0·001;sed0·45) for the women and 12·2, 14·0 and 16·7 MJ/d (P = 0·007;sed1·11) for the men on the Nex, Mex and Hex treatments, respectively. EI was 8·3, 8·6 and 9·9 MJ/d (P = 0·118;sed0·72) for the women and 10·6, 11·6 and 12·0 MJ/d (P = 0·031;sed0·47) for the men, respectively. On average, subjects compensated for about 30 % of the exercise-induced energy deficit. However, the degree of compensation varied considerably among individuals. The present study captured the initial compensation in EI for exercise-induced energy deficits. Total compensation would take a matter of weeks.

Come nelle precedenti occasioni, nel mentre si realizza tale politica, nelle sedi competenti si discute del modo in cui riformare quella successiva, alla luce sia delle conclusioni di una serie di documenti, tra cui un rapporto scientifico, sia dei risultati concretamente ottenuti nell'impiego delle risorse finanziarie stanziate coi fondi strutturali. Infatti, nonostante la grave e preoccupante crisi finanziaria attualmente in corso in alcuni Stati membri, č previsto che nell'autunno di quest'anno la Commissione europea presenti il nuovo pacchetto legislativo sulla politica di coesione 2014-2020.

Los reservorios del Noroeste Peruano han producido por más de un siglo principalmente areniscas silicoclásticas, de baja permeabilidad, a través de yacimientos en compartimentos o sub-bloques generados por un alto fallamiento. El mecanismo característico de impulsión es depletación por gas en solución y los pozos comúnmente son producidos con un sistema de levantamiento artificial por bombeo mecánico o gas lift; el factor de recobro promedio alcanzado en estos yacimientos está entre 8% y 15%. En los últimos años se ha observado un gran avance en las técnicas de estimación de reservas a través de análisis de curvas de declinación (DCA) en yacimientos no convencionales de muy baja permeabilidad.Estas técnicas también pueden ser utilizadas en reservorios convencionales apretados, aquellos típicamente encontrados en la Cuenca Talara de Perú, en los cuales la aplicación de la técnica tradicional de DCA suele sobreestimar los pronósticos de producción y el cálculo de reservas. Alternativamente, se ha propuesto evaluar los modelos de Declinación Estrecha Extendida (SEDM), Ley de Potencia, Duong y Declinación Exponencial Extendida, en los reservorios de esta cuenca (Duong, A. N., 2010). Durante el proceso de evaluación, se utilizó la información de 30 pozos productores de diferentes reservorios apretados de la Cuenca Talara: Manta, Mesa, Mogollón y Pariñas Inferior. Se probaron los citados métodos de análisis de declinación con la historia de producción de los primeros 6, 12 y 24 meses; cabe señalar que, de acuerdo a la observación realizada y debido a la baja productividad de estos reservorios, se determinó que su flujo aún se encontraba en estado transitorio durante el periodo de análisis. Los pronósticos se compararon con datos reales de producción y los modelos de declinación se clasificaron por orden de prioridad de acuerdo a la certeza de su grado de ajuste. Se eligió la técnica más idónea para generar, a través de un enfoque probabilístico, utilizando la simulación Monte Carlo, un conjunto de curvas tipo para la cuenca Talara; de esta manera, se obtuvieron los percentiles P90, P50 y P10. Los rangos de permeabilidad en los reservorios de los casos evaluados varían entre 0.01 y 1 mD. Se ha observado que la aplicación del modelo DCA de ARPs en pozos con poca historia de producción de reservorios de baja permeabilidad, resulta impreciso en las predicciones de estimados de reservas. Por otro lado, los nuevos métodos de DCA son más conservadores en sus pronósticos y, por ende, más precisos en este caso debido a que permiten incorporar información en estado transitorio. La aplicación de este nuevo enfoque ayudará a obtener pronósticos confiables en la evaluación de futuras estrategias de desarrollo y a predecir con mayor certeza la producción de futuros trabajos de workover y nuevos pozos de desarrollo.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana Poelln., belonging to the Crassulaceae, is a common ornamental houseplant with many cultivars. In May 2010, powdery mildew was observed on about 50% of 3,000 potted kalanchoe ‘Rose Queen’ plants in plastic greenhouses located in Yongin city of central Korea. Farmers producing potted kalanchoes in Yongin region stated that powdery mildew on kalanchoes was mild without causing problems for the last several years. The disease became severe from April 2010 and caused economic losses. The economic and esthetic value was reduced by the unsightly appearance of infected plants with most being unmarketable. Damage due to powdery mildew infections on kalanchoes appeared every year. A representative specimen was deposited in the Korea University herbarium (Accession No. KUS-F24911). Mycelial colonies were white, conspicuous and epiphytic on leaves and stems. Hyphae were septate, branched, and 3 to 6 μm wide. Appressoria on the hyphae were well developed, lobed, and mostly positioned in pairs. Conidiophores were cylindrical, 70 to 145 × 7 to 11.5 μm, and composed of three to four cells. Foot-cells of conidiophores were straight, cylindrical, and 28 to 48 μm long. Conidia produced singly were variable in shape, oval to cylindrical, oval or oblong-elliptical, 30 to 55 × 14 to 24 μm, lacked distinct fibrosin bodies, and showed angular/rectangular wrinkling of outer walls. Germ tubes were produced on the perihilar position of conidia. No chasmothecia were found. The morphological characteristics were consistent with descriptions of Erysiphe sedi U. Braun (1). To confirm the identity of the causal fungus, the complete ITS region of rDNA from KUS-F24911 was amplified with primers ITS5 and P3 as described by Takamatsu et al. (4) and directly sequenced. The resulting sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. JX173288). A GenBank BLAST search using the present data revealed that the ITS sequence shares 100% (552/552 bp) similarity with those of E. sedi on Sedum spp. (Accession Nos. JX173289, JX173290). Pathogenicity was confirmed through inoculation by gently pressing diseased leaves onto leaves of five healthy potted kalanchoe plants. Five non-inoculated plants served as controls. Plants were maintained in a greenhouse at 22 ± 2°C. Inoculated plants developed signs and symptoms after 7 days, whereas the control plants remained symptomless. The fungus present on the inoculated plants was morphologically identical to that originally observed on diseased plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. E. sedi is also known to infect Kalanchoe pinnata (Lam.) Pers. (= Bryophyllum calycinum Salisb.) in Romania (1,2) and other crassulaceous plants including Sedum spectabile in North America (3). To our knowledge, this is the first report of E. sedi infections of K. blossfeldiana in Korea. This disease seems to be a serious threat to the commercial production of kalanchoe plants which are cultivated under plastic greenhouses of poor ventilation and low light levels in Korea. Nursery producers are interested in supplying sedum (Sedum sp.)-vegetated modular units for the green roof industry. This research examined the influence of three rates of controlled-release fertilizer (CRF) (50, 78, and 108 g per unit of 15N–3.9P–10K, 8- to 9-month formulation) on production of modules containing one or two Sedum species. Six Sedum species were evaluated independently: ‘Angelina’ sedum (Sedum rupestre), gray sedum (S. pachyclados), ‘John Creech’ sedum (S. spurium), tasteless sedum (S. sexangulare), ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum (S. kamtschaticum var. floriferum), and white sedum (S. album). The species were then paired as follows: white sedum/‘John Creech’ sedum, ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum/‘Angelina’ sedum, and gray sedum/tasteless sedum. For each pair, three starting proportions of cuttings were studied. In 8 weeks, the medium and high fertility rates produced significantly more units with at least 95% vegetation coverage than the low rate. In general, increasing the fertility rate increased the fresh weight at time of harvest, except for ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum and tasteless sedum at the high rate, which developed “melt out.” Melted-out tissues turned brown, desiccated and detracted from the visual appearance of units. ‘John Creech’ sedum and white sedum had the greatest fresh weight followed by ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum, ‘Angelina’ sedum, and tasteless sedum. Gray sedum grew substantially slower than all other species and had the lowest fresh weight. For white sedum/‘John Creech’ sedum units, harvest fresh weight proportions were similar to starting cutting fresh weight proportions. For gray sedum/tasteless sedum units, tasteless sedum outgrew gray sedum and gray sedum was barely noticeable in finished units. Harvest fresh weight and digital image analysis (DIA) of ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum/‘Angelina' sedum units indicated that ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum colonized units faster than ‘Angelina’ sedum, and had greater visual impact in finished units. Units started with 25% ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum cuttings, the smallest proportion tested, were roughly 73% covered with ‘Weihenstephaner's Gold’ sedum at harvest. We recommend growers use the medium fertility rate to produce the most units with 95% vegetation or more in the least amount of time and with reduced risk of melt out. To achieve desired final species proportions, growers may need to adjust the ratios of cuttings based on uneven species vigor.
