Labu siam (Sechium edule) merupakan jenis tanaman sayuran yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk berbagai jenis makanan, labu siam (Sechium edule) bukan tanaman asli Indonesia, melainkan berasal dari Thailand. Labu siam (Sechium edule) memiliki kandungan gizi yang cukup lengkap salah satunya flavonoid yang memiliki sifat hipoglikemik. Selain dapat diolah sebagai sayuran, labu siam (Sechium edule) juga dapat diolah menjadi biskuit. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan di Laboratorium Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam Universitas Tadulako. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental laboratoris dengan menggunakan uji statistik uji t berpasangan didasarkan pada analisis kadar glukosa darah tikus (rattus norvegicus) dalam 3 waktu intervensi (perlakuan). Hasil analisis uji laboratorium kandungan: analisis kadar glukosa darah tikus (Rattus norvegicus) diperoleh rerata kadar glukosa sebelum intervensi (108,80 mg/dL), rerata kadar glukosa hari ke-7 intervensi (105,60 mg/dL), dan rerata kadar glukosa hari ke-14 intervensi (96,40 mg/dL). Perbedaan kadar glukosa dalam tiga waktu perlakuan: sebelum dengan setelah hari ke-7 (p value = 0,016), sebelum dengan setelah hari ke-14 intervensi (p value = 0,002) dan setelah intervensi hari ke 7 dengan setelah intervensi hari ke-14 (p value = 0,007). Penelitian ini menyarankan kepada masyarakat agar lebih memanfaatkan buah labu siam (Sechium edule) karena kandungan-kandungan gizi yang terdapat pada buah labu siam (Sechium edule) sangat bermanfaat bagi kesehatan, khususnya bagi penderita diabetes melitus.

Sechium edule shows a wide biological diversity. Hybrids and varieties of Sechium edule have been created, producing fruits of different shapes, sizes, colors, tastes, and textures. These hybrids and varieties have been used as food and in traditional medicine. In this research, the antiproliferative activity of the Madre Negra™ genotype of Sechium edule var. amarus silvestrys on the MCF7 breast cancer cell line was assessed. Different extracts in hexane, methanol, and dichloromethane were obtained to perform a bio-guided study. The dichloromethane extract showed the largest significant inhibitory activity (p < 0.05). This extract was separated into 92 fractions, which were reduced to eight fractions by chromogenic identity. Of the eight fractions, two recorded significant antiproliferative activity (p < 0.05) on MCF7, an even higher activity than the total extract. The active metabolites were identified as flavonoids, tannins, and terpenes, of which cucurbitacins I, B, D, and E stood out. The present paper can be considered as preliminary results of our research work.

Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui umur simpan biskuit dari campuran tepung labu siam (Sechium edule) dan tepung kacang hijau (Vigna radiata). Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah biskuit yang terbuat dari tepung labu siam (Sechium edule) dan kacang hijau (Vignaradiata). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan pada bulan Juni-September 2020 yang diawali dengan pembuatan biskuit dari formulasi tepung labu siam dan kacang hijau. Analisis data untuk pendugaan umur simpan biskuit menggunakan metode Arrhenius. Hasil penelitian menggunakan metode ASLT. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, umur simpan biskuit dari campuran tepung labu siam (Sechium edule) dan formulasi kacang hijau (Vignaradiata) paling tinggi diperoleh pada tepung labu siam 100% pada suhu 25 oC selama 177 hari. Kacang hijau 100% tertinggi diperoleh pada suhu 25 oC selama 176 hari. Tepung labu siam 50% dan kacang hijau 50% tertinggi diperoleh pada suhu 25 oC selama 187 hari. Tepung labu siam 75% tertinggi dan kacang hijau 25% diperoleh pada suhu 25 oC selama 170 hari. Tepung labu siam 25% dan kacang hijau 75% tertinggi diperoleh pada suhu 45oC selama 195 hari.

Labu Siam (Sechium edule) mengandung flavonoid yang diketahui memiliki aktivitas hipotensi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui adanya pengaruh pemberian ekstrak buah labu siam sebagai antihipertensi. Metode penelitian ini adalah eksperimen semu (quasy experiment) dengan desain equivalent time-sample design yang dilakukan dengan cara memberikan perlakuan dan diukur tekanan darah pre-test dan post-test. Subjek penelitian diberikan ekstrak labu siam dengan dosis 100 mL/hari selama 7 hari. Hasil uji statistik menunjukkan terdapat perbedaan nilai tekanan darah sistolik dengan nilai signifikan p=0,001 dan nilai tekanan darah diastolik dengan nilai signifikan p=0,009 (α=0,05). Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa labu siam (Sechium edule) dapat menurunkan nilai tekanan darah sistolik dan diastolik pada pasien hipertensi.

A novel species of powdery mildew, Neoerysiphe sechii sp. nov., has been proposed based on host, morphological characteristics, and gene sequences. The new species was found on chayote (Sechium edule) and a wild species, chayotillo (S. mexicanum), in Veracruz, Mexico. This novel species was identified as a member of Neoerysiphe, based on the morphological characteristics of the anamorph: catenescent conidia, lobed appressoria, and Striatoidium-type conidia. No teleomorph was observed. Neoerysiphe sechii is distinguished by foot cells that are frequently cylindrical with a slight widening at the base, a feature not observed previously in other species in the genus. An Erysiphales-specific primer was designed for the 5′ end of the ITS region of the nuclear rDNA. Independent and concatenated phylogenetic analyses with our rDNA sequences and sequences available in GenBank for Neoerysiphe spp. confirmed that the powdery mildew specimens found in Sechium spp. form an independent and strongly supported lineage. This is the first report of a Neoerysiphe species causing powdery mildew on members of Cucurbitaceae, and it is the second species reported from Mexico after N. cumminsiana. Neoerysiphe sechii is found on cultivated and endemic hosts in Mexico, suggesting that the fungus itself may be endemic.

There are few studies in Mexico aimed at evaluating the genetic variability of Sechium spp. Despite certain biological variants are reported with very high potential to develop antineoplastic supplements to treat public health conditions. Using the Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP) technique, the genetic variability of a sample of 95 accessions of three species of Sechium (S. edule, S. chinantlense, S. compositum) was evaluated, with leaf DNA from the Banco Nacional de Germoplasma de Sechium edule en Mexico. Four combinations of AFPL were applied (EcoRI + ACC/MseI + CAC, EcoRI + ACC/MseI + CAT, EcoRI + ACC/MseI + CGC, and EcoRI + ACC/MseI + CGG). DNA samples were classified into three groups based on the flavour of the fruit (sweet, neutral, bitter). An average of 47.91% polymorphism, 0.16 heterozygosity, 32.83 number of polymorphic bands, and a zero Wright fixation index (Fst) was obtained. The evidence showed that the domesticated accessions (sweet, neutral) were separated from the bitter-taste genotypes. A monophyletic tree was generated with the genetic distance matrix and the neighbour-joining methodology. Analyses showed S. edule as the root taxon, deriving S. compositum and S. chinantlense as subgroups, and suggesting that there is not enough differentiation to treat them as separate species. The evaluated sample showed that there is no apparent reproductive barrier for genetic cross breeding. Genotypes behaved as a complex with evolutive dynamism; that genetic complexity would allow the design of new variants.

Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw. (Cucurbitaceae) is a species native to Mexico and Central America. The collection, characterization, and evaluation of accessions maintained in genebanks is essential for the conservation of this species. However, there are no specific varietal descriptors that differ from those used in a phenetic approach and are adapted to international registration guidelines to help distinguish, improve, cluster, and protect intraspecific variants of common use and those obtained by breeding. Therefore, 65 morphological descriptors (qualitative and quantitative) were evaluated in 133 accessions obtained from Mexico, Guatemala, and Costa Rica located in the National Germplasm Bank of S. edule in Mexico. These characteristics were observed to be phenetically stable for five generations under the same agroclimatic conditions. In addition, an analysis of amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) was applied to 133 samples from a set of 245 accessions. According to the multivariate analysis, 26 of the 65 descriptors evaluated (qualitative and quantitative) enabled differentiation of varieties of S. edule. The AFLP analysis showed a high level of polymorphism and genetic distance between cultivated accessions and their corresponding wild ancestor. The variations in S. edule suggest that the morphological characteristics have differentiated from an essentially derived initial edible variety (ancestral original variety), but unlike other cucurbits, there is no evidence of the ancestral edible for Sechium since the seed is unorthodox and there are no relicts.

Uric acid is the final product of purine metabolism and is categorized as hyperuricemia when it reaches >6.0 mg.dL-1 for women and >7.0 mg.dL-1 for men. The chayote leaves (Sechium edule) contain a high amount of flavonoid and might be used as an alternative to reduce hyperuricemia. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of chayote leaves (Sechium edule)’s flavonoid fraction on the level of uric acid and the activity of xanthine oxidase (XO) in Sprague Dawley Rats. The flavonoid fraction (FF) was obtained by extracting the chayote leaves, fractionating with n-hexane, hydrolyzing with HCl, and finally re-fractionating with ethyl acetate. Thirty male Sprague Dawley rats were induced for hyperuricemia by potassium oxonate and broth block for 21 days, and the interventions were given orally for 14 days. The rats were divided randomly into five groups: normal control (K-), hyperuricemia control (K+), hyperuricemia with FF dose 50 mg.200g-1 body weight (P1), hyperuricemia with FF dose 100 mg.200g-1 body weight (P2) and hyperuricemia with allopurinol 1.8 mg.200g-1 body weight. Xanthine oxidase activity was measured by CheKineTM Xanthine Oxidase Assay Kit, with simple colorimetry methods. The statistical analysis for XO activity was done using Kruskal-Wallis followed by Mann Whitney. The results showed that chayote leaves (Sechium edule)’s flavonoid fraction contains apigenin, apigenin o-glucoside, and luteolin. It also has antioxidant activity with 98.45% inhibition. There was a significant reduction in xanthine oxidase activity in groups treated with FF (p <0.005). The best dose of FF affecting XO activity was 100 mg.200g-1 body weight. The combination of FF and allopurinol can be more effective in decreasing uric acid levels by inhibiting XO activity.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a risk factor for cognitive deterioration and frailty in older adults. In this regard it has been shown that oxidative stress (OxS) and chronic inflammation are involved in the pathophysiology of these alterations. Harmless antioxidant and anti-inflammatory therapeutic alternatives have been proposed, such as the consumption of Sechium edule (chayote), but the evidence is inconclusive. For this reason, an exploratory study of a single group chosen by convenience sampling, including 12 older adults, with an average age of 71 ± 6 years (10 women and 2 men) with a diagnosis of MetS according to the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP/ATP III) criteria. This exploratory study aimed to determine the effect of the consumption of the dried fruit powder supplement of Sechium edule var. nigrum spinosum (500 mg, 3 times per day) for six weeks on the markers of OxS in elderly adults with MetS. All participants’ OxS markers were measured before and after treatment. There was a statistically significant decrease in the concentration of lipoperoxides (baseline, 0.289 ± 0.04 vs. post-treatment, 0.234 ± 0.06 μmol/L, p < 0.05), together with a significant increase in total antioxidant status (baseline, 0.97 ± 0.18 vs. post-treatment, 1.2 ± 0.12 mmol/L, p < 0.05). In this sense, the oxidative stress index showed a statistically significant decrease (baseline, 1.7 ± 0.78 vs. post-treatment, 0.75 ± 0.87, p < 0.05). A statistically significant decrease in the concentration of TNF-α after treatment was also found (baseline, 5.3 ± 1.4 vs. post-treatment, 3.5 ± 1.3, p < 0.05).Our findings suggest that the consumption of the dry fruit of Sechium edule has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect in older adults with metabolic syndrome.

Salah satu contoh tanaman obat yang umum digunakan oleh masyarakat adalah tanaman daun labu siam (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz), yang dipercaya memiliki kemampuan mempercepat penyembuhan luka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji efektivitas ekstrak etanol daun labu siam (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Swartz) dalam penyembuhan luka sayat pada tikus putih (Rattus norvegicus). Sampel yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah 15 ekor tikus jantan. Luka sayat dengan panjang 1 cm dibuat pada punggung tikus menggunakan pisau bedah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan 5 perlakuan, yaitu kontrol negatif, kontrol positif (povidone iodine 10%), dan 3 ekstrak kental dengan tingkat konsentrasi berturut-turut 5%, 10%, dan 15%, dengan masing-masing perlakuan diulang sebanyak 3 kali. Setiap perlakuan diberikan dua kali sehari selama tujuh hari. Hasil perhitungan persentase penyembuhan luka pada tikus menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak daun labu siam dengan konsentrasi 15% menunjukkan efektivitas penyembuhan luka sayat pada tikus putih sebesar 100%.

Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw. tiene un papel importante nutricional y terapéuticamente en la medicina popular, especialmente utilizado como agente hipotensor. Para ampliar la información farmacológica sobre esta especie, este trabajo tiene como objetivo el estudio histoanatómico de sus hojas. Se prepararon muestras con secciones transversales y paradérmicas de la hoja para el estudio microscópico. Para el análisis histoquímico, se utilizaron reactivos específicos para los metabolitos objetivo. A través del análisis realizado se identificaron estructuras anatómicas para la correcta identificación de la especie estudiada. La histoquímica mostró la presencia de alcaloides, triterpenos y esteroides, compuestos lipofílicos y lignina. Esta información sobre la localización de los compuestos no tiene precedentes. Así, el trabajo amplía el conocimiento sobre la especie y la familia Cucurbitaceae. Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw. plays an important role as for its nutritional and therapeutical use in folk medicine, being especially used as a hypotensive agent. In order to expand the pharmacobotanical information on this species, this work aims to perform the histoanatomical study of its leaves. Samples containing cross-section and paradermic sections of the leaf were prepared for microscopic study. For the histochemical analysis, specific reagents were used, according to the targeted metabolites. Through the performed analysis, it was possible to identify the anatomical structures that confer the correct identification of the studied species. The histochemistry showed the presence of alkaloids, triterpenes and steroids, lipophilic compounds and lignin. This information on the localisation of the compounds is unprecedented. Thus, the work expands the knowledge about the species and the family Cucurbitaceae.

Sin embargo, uno de los principales problemas que enfrentan los productores está relacionado con el material que utilizan para la siembra, tradicionalmente el fruto o la semilla que por su naturaleza no permite la obtención de una producción morfológicamente homogénea de frutos; lo que resulta en rechazo de fruta exportable que puede alcanzar hasta el 50% de la producción. La incorporación de material de siembra propagado vegetativamente aseguraría a los productores de chayote aumentos en la uniformidad de frutos y por ende, mayores réditos por sus cosechas. ABSTRACT Previous studies accomplished that the chayote ethanol extract (Sechium edule (Jack) Sw) had an antihypertensive effect. To get and identify the active compound, we fractionated the extract and evaluated its antihypertensive activity. This study aims to investigate the antihypertensive effect of the n-hexane fraction (HF-CEE) and ethyl acetate fraction of chayote ethanol extract (EAF-CEE) in monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced hypertensive rats. We made the chayote extract using the maceration method by soaking the chayote simplicia in ethanol 70%. HF-CEE and EAF-CEE were obtained by stratified fractionation using n-hexane and ethyl acetate. An antihypertensive effect of the fraction measured on MSG-induced hypertension male Wistar rats after MSG 100 mg/kg BW/day (p.o) treatment for 14 days. The study concluded that HF-CEE and EAF-CEE had an antihypertensive effect in MSG-induced hypertensive rats. The EAF-CEE antihypertensive effect is higher than HF-CEE. Therefore, the FEAF-CEE active compounds need to be isolated, identified, developed, and their potential as an antihypertensive candidate. The consumer demand for chayote (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw.) fruits has increased in recent years, virens levis being the most important variety, although other chayote varieties are gaining importance such as nigrum xalapensis and n. spinosum. However, the postharvest behavior of these varieties is different, so it is important to evaluate the factors that limit the shelf life of each variety. Therefore, in this study, fruits of each variety from the Mexican National Germplasm Bank of Sechium edule were used. The following fruit quality variables were evaluated: weight loss, humidity (%), color, chlorophyll, titratable acidity, total soluble solids (TSS), total sugars, and stomatal characteristics. In addition, the storage potential of each variety was evaluated for two weeks at different temperatures, 7°, 13° (85% RH) and 24 °C (60% RH), with the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). The variables evaluated were viviparism, disease severity, weight loss, dehydration and chilling injury (CI). The fruits of n. xalapensis and n. spinosum have a higher content of chlorophylls and carotenoids, but similar contents of TSS, acidity and total sugars than v. levis fruits. The use of 1-MCP reduced viviparism in all varieties, and the severity of blisters was higher in v. levis. The fruits of the three varieties presented severe CI when stored at 7 °C but the most susceptible to dehydration and diseases severity is n. spinosum.

Chayote (Sechium edule) is a plant from the Cucurbitaceae family that contains several vitamins such as vitamins A, B, and C, and is often used for medicinal purposes. Based on phytochemical analysis, chayote extract contains bioactive compounds in the form of phenolics. Phenolic compounds are secondary metabolites and are used as cosmetic and medicinal ingredients due to their ability to reduce oxidative stress. This research aims to determine the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of chayote (Sechium edule) extract using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Chayote extract was obtained using the Ultrasonic Assisted-Extraction (UAE) method with 96% ethanol solvent. The extraction variables used were time (15, 20, and 25 minutes), amplitude (45, 65, and 85%), and solvent ratio (1:5, 1:10, and 1:15). The determination of total phenolic content was based on the Folin-Ciocalteau method, while antioxidant activity was determined using DPPH. The determination of chayote extraction parameters for total phenolic content was carried out using the Response Surface Methodology with a Box-Behnken type. The optimal conditions obtained for chayote extraction were 1.327 mg GAE/g sample for total phenolic content and 29.45% for antioxidant activity under the conditions of 20 minutes extraction time, 65% amplitude, and 1:10 solvent ratio.

The objectives of this research were to examine the effect of Sechium edule ethanolic extract in insulin and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. Type 1 diabetic rat were obtained by intraperitonially injected with multiple low dose STZ (MLD-STZ) 20 mg/kgBW for 5 days. The animals were divided into 5 groups: untreated rats in group (K) were considered as negative control, MLD-STZ induced type 1 diabetic rats in group (S) were considered as positive control. In another 3 group (A, B, C) type 1 diabetic rats were orally treated with three doses of S. edule ethanolic extract (14, 28, 42 mg/kg BW) for 7 days. The animals were sacrificed in two days after last treatment, serum were collected for measuring of the insulin concentration by ELISA method. Level of MDA on kidney, liver and pancreas were measured by TBA method. The treatment with S. edule ethanolic extracts unable to increase of insulin yet but the treatment with 42 mg/kg BW of S. edule ethanolic extract showed significantly decreased MDA levels on liver but not significant on kidney and pancreas.

Hipertensi didefinisikan sebagai tekanan darah tinggi dan menjadi salah satu pembunuh di dunia. Terapi hipertensi berfokus pada protein Angiotensin Converting Enzim (ACE) yang memiliki fungsi modulator konversi AT1-AT2. Pengobatan memanfaatkan kandungan kalium buah labu yang memiliki fungsi supresi ACE. Tujuan penelitian ini eksplorasi kalium dalam labu siam sebagai inhibitor ACE. Penelitian bioinformatika, kalium (CID: 5462222) diunduh dari database PubChem sedangkan protein ACE (ID: 3bkk) diperoleh dari Protein Data Bank. Ligan dan protein didocking menggunakan perangkat lunak HEX, hasil penelitian divisualisasikan menggunakan Discovery studio. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa labu siam memiliki kandungan kalium yang memiliki potensi sebagai salah satu terapi hipertensi melalui penghambatan kinerja ACE sehingga tidak terjadi konversi angiotensin I menjadi angiotensin II. Labu siam dapat dijadikan alternatif dalam pengobatan hipertensi.

Two experiments were conducted to determine the suitable mother vine and month for producing cutplants of chayote through vine cuttings. The survivals of young matured vine cuttings were greater (35- 87%) than those of old basal vine cuttings (26.3-64.3%) in all planting dates. In October planting, 53-75% cuttings survived 16 days. In November planting, 93% of the cuttings with 500 ppm IBA survived, of which 63% produced roots, while only 28% cuttings rooted in control. The survival pecent of vine cuttings planted in October, December and January were 75-87 and 100, respectively but none of them produced roots. Hence, November with mild temperature and high humidity was the best month for the production of cut-plants in chayote through vine cuttings under Chitwan condition. Chayote (Sechium edule L) has a short shelf life due to its high moisture content (87-95%). This study aimed at prolonging the shelf life of chayote by using different drying methods: convective hot oven drying (OV), and osmo-dehydration (OD) with salt or sugar. Dried samples (at 20% moisture content) were analysed for their nutritional, rehydration, textural and sensory properties. Dried chayote was stored for three months while determining total plate count (TPC), coliforms, Staphylococcus, yeasts and moulds and sensory acceptability. The time to attain 20% moisture in chayote varied significantly (p &lt; 0.05) from 9 h (OV and OD sugar) and 12h for osmo-dried chayote in salt. Ash, total sugar, starch and fiber increased significantly (p ˂ 0.05) from fresh sample as follows 5.2 - 28.3 g/100g (OD salt), 5.8 - 18.5 g/100g (OD sugar), 18.4 - 21.3 g/100g (OD sugar), 49.1 - 52.9 g/100g (OD sugar), respectively after drying. Vitamin C decreased from 232.5 - 38.4 mg/100g (OV) whereas zinc decreased from 1442.9 - 29.5 mg/100g (OV). Rehydration ratio varied from 2.0 &plusmn; 0.26 (OD salt after 30 min) to 2.9 &plusmn; 0.05 (OV after 20 min). Osmotically dehydrated samples were softer than air dried samples after rehydration and cooking. Total plate counts decreased from log 5.14 to non-detected. Staphylococcus aureus counts decreased from log 4.29 to non-detected. Coliform counts deceased from log 4.91 non detected respectively. Osmotic dehydration contributed to the preservation of the nutritional, textural and sensory properties of dried chayote with salt achieving better preservation than sugar. Drying increased the shelf life of chayote from days to three months with high microbial quality and sensory acceptability.

Sechium edule (Cucurbitaceae) is a commercial species of chayote and is just one of several species in the genus Sechium, whose extracts inhibit proliferation in tumor cell lines. The capacity of the wild species Sechium chinantlense (SCH) as an antitumor agent is unknown, as is the mechanism of action. In the present study, HeLa cervical cancer and HaCaT normal cell lines were treated with SCH and cell proliferation was inhibited in both cell lines in a dose-dependent manner similar to the effect of the antineoplastic agent cisplatin (Cis). Additionally, SCH arrested cell cycle progression but only in HeLa cells and induced apoptosis, as shown by phosphatidylserine translocation and caspase-3 activation, while Cis did so in both cell lines. Exploration of the mechanism of action of SCH in HeLa cells suggests that apoptosis was mediated by the intrinsic signaling pathway since there was no activation of caspase-8, but there was a release of cytochrome-c. These findings suggest that the SCH extract has the potential to selectively kill tumor cells by promoting apoptosis, without harming nontumor cells.

Container experiments were conducted in the Dominican Republic to determine the effects of gibberellic acid applications on the `White', `Green', and `Spiny Green' tayota (Sechium edule) Dominican types. Young plants (25 cm in length) of the three types were sprayed with aqueous solutions of gibberellic acid at rates 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 parts per million. A completely randomized design with seven replications was utilized. Plant height and shoot dry weight were determined 30 days after treatment and resulting data was subjected to analysis of variance and regression analysis. Gibberellic acid treatment significantly increased tayota shoot dry weight and stem elongation. Both variables responded with similar patterns to gibberellic acid application. A linear regression (Y = 39.82 + 0.214 X, r2 0.95) described stem elongation as a function of gibberellic acid rates. Results show that gibberellic acid can be effectively used in either tayota type to promote early stem elongation. From a practical standpoint, due to the climbing nature of Sechium edulis, rapid stem elongation could be instrumental in a more rapid establishment of the crop vines in the trellis system, as well as to provide the crop with an advantage on weeds competing for light during the usually critical early growth stages.

The phytochemical screenings and analysis of chemical compounds in ethanol extract of labu siam fruit (Sechium edule Jacq. Swartz.) with Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) has been carried out. Isolation was done by Soxhlet extraction for 6 hours with petroleum ether and the residue was extracted by maceration during 24 hours with ethanol.The isolated compounds in ethanol extract were identified by phytochemical screenings method and TLC. The result showed the presence of alkaloid, saponin, cardenolin/bufadienol and flavonoid.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ethanol extract of Squash fruit Chayotte (Sechium edule) to Interleukin 6 level and increasedthe size ofthe diameter of the pancreas in STZ-induced hyperglycemic mice model. Goals : This research is experimental research uses Post test randomized controlled group design upon male mice, and divided into 4 groups; negative control group, positive control group is treated with streptozotocin at a dose of 60 mg/kg weight, and groups of therapy (dosage 100 gram/kg weight, 200 gram/kg weight). Methods : The measurement of the level interleleukin 6 (IL-6) used ELISA method and the description of histopatoligy pancreas. The data analysis of level IL-6 level uses One Way ANOVA (α = 0,005) and pancreas histology image used descriptive analysis. Result : The results showed a decrease in the levels of IL-6, although not significant if it’s compared to the positive control. The preparat histopathology pancreas observation increased diameter which showed widening of cell β of pancreas. Conclution : The conclusion of this research was that ethanol extract of squash fruit can reduce levels IL-6 and prevent the hiperglikemia mice pancreas damages

Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have a redox imbalance, due to a decay in antioxidant capacity. Oxidative stress (OxS) is considered an important modulator of telomere shortening and telomerase activity. One of the fruits that has been associated with an antioxidant effect is Sechium edule and although its properties are well established, there is only one exploratory study evaluating its effectiveness in patients with MetS. The present investigation is a much more robust and controlled study, including a placebo group. Hence, we determined the effect of consumption of the dried fruit powder (500 mg, three times per day) for three months. We measured effects on telomerase levels, antioxidant capacity, and markers for OxS. The study was performed in a sample of 75 older adults: placebo group (n = 30) and experimental group (n = 45) with the diagnosis of MetS according to the National Adult Treatment Panel of the National Cholesterol Program III (NCEP/ATP III) criteria. All markers were measured before and after three months of treatment. There was a statistically significant decrease in lipoperoxides and protein carbonylation with an increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as sustained levels of telomerase in patients who consumed Sechium edule. Our findings suggest that consumption of this fruit has a hypoglycemic, hypotensive, and antioxidant effect, without altering telomerase levels, which could suggest better protection against telomere shortening.

"Cellulosic plant fibers are good reinforcing materials for composites because they are cheap, light weight, and exhibit good mechanical properties. The isolation of the crystalline portion exposes the stable hydrogen bond network that can form intermolecular bonding with other matrices, such as starch, polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan, among others. Sundried and undried sayote (Sechium edule) vines, of varying degrees of maturity, were subjected to uniform chemomechanical extraction procedures to obtain crystalline fibers. The chemo-mechanically extracted fibers were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC thermograms revealed that the sun-dried and mature sample exhibited the narrowest endotherm, indicating the presence of fewer amorphous structures. FTIR spectra showed that the numbers of functional groups present in the fiber samples decreased with increasing degree of maturity. SEM micrographs reveal that the mature portion of the sayote vine had more fibrous and orderly features, compared to the samples extracted from the younger and intermediate portions. Further, chemo-mechanical extraction and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of fibers from mature, sun-dried sayote vines also revealed a relative crystallinity index of the extracted fiber of 65%. The fiber yield from the mature portion of the vine was 9%. Sayote (Sechium edule) vine can be a promising source of crystalline fibers for composite fabrication."

Makmur & Enny (2020) The increased incidence of hypertension is influenced by several risk factors including gender, family history of high blood pressure, obesity, lack of exercise, consuming excessive salt, stress, and unhealthy lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking. Management of hypertension can be done by means of pharmacology and non-pharmacology. By way of pharmacology or using hypertension drugs. While non-pharmacological therapy is using complementary therapy. Knowing the Effect of Giving Siamese Pumpkin (Sechium Edule) Decoction on Blood Pressure of Pregnant Women with Hypertension at TPMB Diana Munzir Way Jepara, East Lampung. This study used the Two group pre-post test design method with a sample of 15 people. Data techniques included in the uivariate analysis using the frequency distribution and bivariate analysis using the SPSS program statistical calculations. The results of this study using the Wilcoxon test showed that there was a significant influence between the pretest and posttest, a significance value of 0.000 or <0.05 was obtained, so the hypothesis was not rejected (accepted), or it meant that there was a difference in the pretest and posttest average values in the hypertension classification. There is a significant influence between the Effect of Siamese Pumpkin Decoction (Sechium Edule) on the Blood Pressure of Pregnant Women and Hypertension before and after it is given. It is hoped that it can increase the knowledge of pregnant women for complementary alternatives to lower blood pressure. Makmur & Enny (2020) meningkatnya kejadian hipertensi dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor resiko diantaranya jenis kelamin, adanya Riwayat darah tinggi dalam keluarga, obesitas, kurang olahraga, mengonsumsi garam yang berlebihan, stress, dan kebiasaan hidup yang tidak sehat seperti merokok dan minum-minuman. Penatalaksaanan hipertensi dapat dilakukan dengan cara farmokologi dan non farmokologi. Dengan cara farmakologi atau menggunakan obat-obatan hipertensi. Sedangkan terapi non farmokologi yaitu menggunakan terapi komplementer. Mengetahui Pengaruh Pemberian Rebusan Labu Siam (Sechium Edule) Terhadap Tekanan Darah Ibu Hamil dengan Hipertensi di TPMB Diana Munzir Way Jepara Lampung Timur. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Two group pre-post test design dengan sample 15 orang. Teknik data termasuk dalam analisis uivariat menggunakan distribusi frekuensi dan analisis bivariat menggunakan perhitungan statistik program SPSS. Hasil dari penelitian ini menggunakan uji Wilcoxon menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh signifikan antara pretest dan posttest, didapat nilai signifikansi sebesar 0,000 atau < 0.05, sehingga hipotesis tidak ditolak (diterima), atau diartikan terdapat perbedaan nilai rata-rata pretest dan posttest pada klasifikasi hipertensi. Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan antara Pengaruh Pemberian Rebusan Labu Siam (Sechium Edule) Terhadap Tekanan Darah Ibu Hamil dengan Hipertensi sebelum dan sesudah diberikan. Diharapkan dapat meningkatkan pengetahuan ibu hamil untuk alternatif menurunkan tekanan darah secara komplementer. Kata Kunci: Hamil, Hipertensi, Labu Siam

In addition to their own antioxidants, human cells feed on external antioxidants, such as the phenolic compounds of fruits and vegetables, which work together to keep oxidative stress in check. Sechium edule, an edible species of chayote, has phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity and antineoplastic activity. A Sechium hybrid shows one thousand times greater antineoplastic activity than edible species, but its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities and the content of phenolic compounds are unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capacity of the extract of fruits of the Sechium hybrid in vitro and in vivo. Phytochemical analysis using HPLC showed that the extract of the Sechium hybrid has at least 16 phenolic compounds; galangin, naringenin, phloretin and chlorogenic acid are the most abundant. In an in vitro assay, this extract inhibited 2,2-diphenyl-L-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) activity and protected the dimyristoylphosphatidylethanolamine (DMPE) phospholipid model cell membrane from oxidation mediated by hypochlorous acid (HClO). In vivo, it was identified that the most abundant metabolites in the extract enter the bloodstream of the treated mice. On the other hand, the extract reduces the levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα), interferon gamma (IFNγ), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) but increases interleukin-10 (IL-10) and glutathione peroxidase levels. Our findings indicate that intake of the fruits of the Sechium hybrid leads to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in a mouse model. Therefore, these results support the possibility of exploring the clinical effect of this hybrid in humans.

This study aims to determine the effect of the ratio of glutinous rice flour and the squash to the resulting dodol characteristics, and to obtain the appropriate ratio of glutinous flour and pistachio to produce dodol with good characteristics and acceptable to consumers. This study used Randomized Block Design (RBD) with 6 (six) comparative treatments namely: T0 (100% glutinous flour: 0% squash); T1 (80% glutinous flour: 20% squash): T2 (70% glutinous flour: 30% squash); T3 (60% glutinous flour: 40% squash); T4 (50% glutinous flour: 50% squash and T5 (40% glutinous flour and 60% squash) Each treatment was repeated 3 times to obtain 18 units of experiments. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the ratio of glutinous flour and gourd flakes have significant effect on water content, ash content, crude fiber content, pH, total sugar, texture, aroma, flavor and overall acceptance of dodol squash. The ratio of 70% starch flour and 30% pumpkin yields a good dodol of cauliflower and not significantly different from the control (100% glutinous flour: 0% squash). Characteristic dodol pumpkin with a ratio of 70% glutinous flour: 30% squash is as follows: water content 19.774%, ash 0.763%, crude fiber 0.925 %, pH 6.270, total sugar 14.660 brix, 4.286 (chewy, elastic, non-breakable) texture taste, 3.000 aroma (somewhat typical dodol squash), 4.286 (sweet legit) flavor, overall acceptance 5.714 (likes) and all these characteristics meet per the requirement of SNI dodol (SNI 01-2986-1992).

Labu siam (Sechium edule (Jacq.) Sw.) merupakan tanaman sayur yang dapat digunakan untuk obat tradisional dan memiliki aktivitas sebagai antikolesterol, antihipertensi, antidiabetes maupun antioksidan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menetapkan mutu ekstrak buah labu siam sebagai bahan baku obat yang berasal dari bahan alam. Standardisasi ekstrak buah labu siam dilakukan terhadap parameter spesifik dan non-spesifik menurut metode standardisasi yang dipersyaratkan. Hasil parameter spesifik ekstrak buah labu siam menunjukkan kadar sari larut air 2,74 ± 0,07%, kadar sari larut etanol 2,75 ± 0,05%, kadar senyawa fenolik 0,36 ± 0,04 mg EAG/g ekstrak dan kadar pektin (bobot equivalen 4.083,51 ± 635,30 mg/eki, kadar metoksi 0,35 ± 0,03% dan kadar galakturonat 2,00 ± 0,19%). Parameter non-spesifik ekstrak buah labu siam menunjukkan kadar air 7,62 ± 0,53%, susut pengeringan 4,49 ± 0,42%, bobot jenis 1,408 ± 0,001 g/ml, abu total 6,33 ± 0,15%, abu tidak larut asam 0,76 ± 0,14%, kadar logam berat As, Cd, Hg dan Pb tidak terdeteksi. Total cemaran mikroba ektrak 7,5 x 103 koloni/g dan angka kapang khamir 20* koloni/g. Berdasarkan data diatas disimpulkan ekstrak etanol 70% buah labu siam memenuhi persyaratan secara umum untuk ekstrak tumbuhan obat.
