Syme, Neil. „Uncanny modalities in post-1970s Scottish fiction : realism, disruption, tradition“. Thesis, University of Stirling, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21768.

Annotation:
This thesis addresses critical conceptions of Scottish literary development in the twentieth-century which inscribe realism as both the authenticating tradition and necessary telos of modern Scottish writing. To this end I identify and explore a Scottish ‘counter-tradition’ of modern uncanny fiction. Drawing critical attention to techniques of modal disruption in the works of a number of post-1970s Scottish writers gives cause to reconsider that realist teleology while positing a range of other continuities and tensions across modern Scottish literary history. The thesis initially defines the critical context for the project, considering how realism has come to be regarded as a medium of national literary representation. I go on to explore techniques of modal disruption and uncanny in texts by five Scottish writers, contesting ways in which habitual recourse to the realist tradition has obscured important aspects of their work. Chapter One investigates Ali Smith’s reimagining of ‘the uncanny guest’. While this trope has been employed by earlier Scottish writers, Smith redesigns it as part of a wider interrogation of the hyperreal twenty-first-century. Chapter Two considers two texts by James Robertson, each of which, I argue, invokes uncanny techniques familiar to readers of James Hogg and Robert Louis Stevenson in a way intended specifically to suggest concepts of national continuity and literary inheritance. Chapter Three argues that James Kelman’s political stance necessitates modal disruption as a means of relating intimate individual experience. Re-envisaging Kelman as a writer of the uncanny makes his central assimilation into the teleology of Scottish realism untenable, complicating the way his work has been positioned in the Scottish canon. Chapter Four analyses A.L. Kennedy’s So I Am Glad, delineating a similarity in the processes of repetition which result in both uncanny effects and the phenomenon of tradition, leading to Kennedy’s identification of an uncanny dimension in the concept of national tradition itself. Chapter Five considers the work of Alan Warner, in which the uncanny appears as an unsettling sense of significance embedded within the banal everyday, reflecting an existentialism which reaches beyond the national. In this way, I argue that habitual recourse to an inscribed realist tradition tends to obscure the range, complexity and instability of the realist techniques employed by the writers at issue, demonstrating how national continuities can be productively accommodated within wider, pluralistic analytical approaches.

Suárez, Trabanco Alvaro 1991. „Digital storytelling, uma exploração prática : seguindo os passos de três gerações de migrantes“. Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10451/33717.

This research aims to recognize the contemporary context of digital storytelling, through an exploratory practice in communication design. In a constantly updated territory, we tried to stabilize the terminology through its historical contextualization and the recognition of current practices in the digital environment, often rooted in journalistic practices. We analyze its main actors, the economic conditions in which they operate, and the future directions of the sector, in a context marked by the economic crisis, but also by a constant reformulation of their models of action and representation. The practice of photojournalism is also addressed as a precursor to a practice of visual journalism from which the examples of digital storytelling emerge. To define the role of the communication designer in the creation of digital storytelling artifacts, we start from the premise of Jan van Toorn: the designer as a visual journalist. The practical component of the dissertation – the project Tras los pasos – aims to recognize the current condition of digital storytelling, to explore its limits and potentialities in the web environment, as well as to identify the role of the communication designer in the elaboration of multimedia narratives. Tras los pasos presents a story of migration of three generations within the same family. From this practical exploration and thanks to the available digital means (both at the level of the design, as well as the circulation and reception of the object), it is concluded that complex, engaging and immersive audiovisual stories, can be developed by authors with very diverse formation and independently of the journalistic industry. Throughout the research, which was marked by a close relationship between theory and practice, we have found a field that slowly attempts to free itself from the language and processes of the printed world, and to redefine itself in the digital environment, revealing a disruptive, ever-changing context

Annotation:
The past decade or so of media promotion has seen a recurring trope of Fanboy to the Rescue—have no fear, it says, this revered franchise is being taken over by a writer, director, or producer who is a “fanboy.” In this trope—which, following Suzanne Scott, the book discusses in terms of the “fanboy auteur”—the fan credentials of writers, directors, and producers are presented as a guarantee of quality media-making. This is a strategy of marketing and branding; it is a claim, from the auteur himself or industry PR machines, that the presence of an auteur who is also a fan means the product is worth consuming. Such claims that fan credentials guarantee quality are often contested, with fans and critics alike rejecting various auteur figures as the true leader of their respective franchises. That split, between assertions of fan and auteur status and acceptance (or not) of that status, is key to unravelling the fan auteur. A Portrait of the Auteur as Fanboy examines the contemporary ascendance of the fan auteur through a series of case studies. We consider both thoroughly mainstream fan auteur figures like Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon and more offbeat ones like Kevin Smith. We examine those who explicitly identify as fans of the source material they engage, like Steven Moffat, E L James, and Patty Jenkins, and those who don’t but engage in fannish ways nonetheless, like Taika Waititi and J. K. Rowling.

This film follows the real-life story of the kidnapping of mega-rich John Paul Getty’s grandson, who was held in a remote area in Italy. Kevin Spacey was cast and filmed as Getty. After the film was complete, a major scandal broke out concerning allegations of the actor’s sexual misconduct. Scott made the difficult decision to remake the parts of the movie in which Spacey had appeared, an extensive undertaking. Veteran actor Christopher Plummer took on the role. Scott was applauded for his moral stance and for pulling off a major cinematic feat―he completed the reshoots and editing just before the release date.

Scott, Maggie. „Convivial Correctives to Metrovincial Prejudice: Kevin Macneil’s The Stornoway Way and Suhayl Saadi’s Psychoraag 1“. Annotation:
Maggie Scott’s chapter examines some of the ways that Scotland’s languages are used in twenty-first century fiction to undermine ‘metrovincial’ perspectives. Scott analyses how the multiplicity of voices in post-devolution Scottish fiction provides examples of local cultural references, knowledge – and especially language – that refute standard linguistic and cultural hegemonies and establish narratives within their own self-determined centres of power and place. She then demonstrates how the works of a growing number of contemporary writers engaging with many of the varieties of language found in modern Scotland reposition the local as the international and invert traditional metrovincial paradigms, where the provincialism of the metropolis is allowed to dominate unchallenged and where the cultures, languages and practices of ‘the faraway’ are dismissed, stigmatised or ignored. Scott argues that multilingual practices including ‘broader’ varieties of Scots, ‘prestigious’ forms of Scottish English, but also elements of Scottish Gaelic, Urdu, Panjabi and diverse English dialects have the potential to act for under-represented or marginalised identities in order to, in the words of Suhayl Saadi, ‘enact both a progressive politics and a meaningful literature [that] must be about enabling the possibility of dissent against the sources of power’.
