Objectives: The primary objective of our study is to assess the existing levelknowledge and attitudes towards scientific research amongst medical students of a medicalcollege in Lahore. Study Design: Quantitative descriptive questionnaire-based survey. Period:June to September 2017 on fourth year and final year students of MBBS. Setting: MedicalCollege in Lahore. Methods: After informed consent and briefing, the questionnaire wasdistributed to the participants. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS. Results: A totalof 200 students were contacted out of which 102 responded (response rate51%). The resultshowed that the knowledge assessment score of final year was lower than fourth year but thedifference was not statistically significant. The knowledge was low in both the groups. Attitudescore was slightly higher in 4th year as compared to 5th year. Conclusion: The study indicatedless knowledge but positive attitude of medical students towards scientific research. Moreover, the culture of research needs to be developed in our undergraduate medical education.

The work is devoted to the study of the characteristics of a low-temperature plasma of a high-frequency (HF) discharge (f=13.56 MHz) ignited between metallic and electrolytic electrodes at atmospheric pressure. Burning of an RF discharge in a diffuse (volumetric) form is observed at the interface between the media between the electrodes. Numerical calculations of the electric field strength and the distribution of the volumetric power density of the Joule heat release before breakdown in a vapor-gas mixture near a metal electrode are presented. The discharge radiation spectrum, plasma composition, and electron density were studied by optical emission spectroscopy. The thermograms of the electrode surface under the conditions of an RF discharge are considered. Keywords: Plasma-liquid systems, high-frequency discharge, electrolytes, numerical methods.

The article examines the methodology of scientific research as a general approach and perspective of the research process. Methodology in research is defined as a systematic method of solving a research problem by collecting data using various methods, providing an interpretation of the collected data, and drawing conclusions about the research data. Essentially, research methodology is a scheme of research or study. A research method is usually seen as a means of collecting or generating data. Traditionally, research methods are divided into quantitative methods (ie, surveys, questionnaires), qualitative methods (ie, interviews, focus groups), or some combination of both in mixed methods research. Research methods vary widely and may include written, visual, verbal, observational, artistic, and active strategies. Scientific research refers to research that collects data using systematic methods and strategies. Data collection, data interpretation and evaluation have a scientific and systematic basis. When conducting scientific research, the researcher must plan the research and determine the methodology. According to the methods used to collect data, scientific research can be classified into different categories such as observation and experiment. The process of scientific research requires a person to devote a lot of time and effort to the process of planning and experimenting in order to find accurate and verified results. Scientific research cannot be conducted in limited time because it will only lead to false conclusions that are of no value to the organization.Conducting research has been a necessary step in human and scientific discovery and evolution. Through research, mankind has been able to solve and successfully find solutions to enormous problems through thinking and reasoning. Conducting research is a time-consuming and exhausting process, as one constantly faces obstacles in trying to get accurate results to discover a solution. However, many great minds have constantly strived for perfection and have helped solve many of the world’s troubling problems and issues through this tedious process. Hence, it has been argued time and time again that research is necessary for progress, improvement and evolution. Understanding the different research methods available, their applicability, advantages, and disadvantages is essential to making an informed decision about the best methodology.

Abstract. Although the development of research competency is an important goal of higher education in social sciences, instruments to measure this outcome often depend on the students’ self-ratings. To provide empirical evidence for the utility of a newly developed instrument for the objective measurement of social-scientific research competency, two validation studies across two independent samples were conducted. Study 1 ( n = 675) provided evidence for unidimensionality, expected differences in test scores between differently advanced groups of students as well as incremental validities over and above self-perceived research self-efficacy. In Study 2 ( n = 82) it was demonstrated that the competency measured indeed is social-scientific and relations to facets of fluid and crystallized intelligence were analyzed. Overall, the results indicate that the test scores reflected a trainable, social-scientific, knowledge-related construct relevant to research performance. These are promising results for the application of the instrument in the evaluation of research education courses in higher education.

The article provides information on the first results of the study of bottom material taken during geological works in the framework of complex research expeditions "Danube-2019" and "Black Sea-2019" in accordance with the Agreement on Scientific and Technical Cooperation between Scientific Hydrophysical Centre of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and State Hydrography Service. The purpose of expeditionary geological research was to obtain relevant empirical data on general trends in changes in bottom topography and main features of floor surface and sedimentation.Comprehensive expeditions collected factual data on the hydrographic, hydroacoustic and hydrological status of the studied waters and in a test mode made geological sampling of the bottom of the North-Western shelf coastal part of the Black Sea and the Danube mouth (within Ukraine) using developed and prepared equipment. Information about the works was added to the oceanographic data bank of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The practical significance of the obtained results is to field test the technology of geological sampling and further cameral work.

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of measurement in scientific research, with an emphasis on measurement in social research and the progress it has made, as well as, the differences in views in the social sciences on the need for measurement. To explain measurement, scale-related concepts such as reality, validity, certainty, accuracy, objectivity and intersubjectivity are highlighted, as these concepts directly affect the measurement process and scale creation. The understanding of measurement in the natural sciences differs from the social sciences. Measurement in the natural sciences was found to be more advanced than in the social sciences. While the purpose of measurement is to produce some kind of truth, but it may sometimes not be able to measure the entire object or component intended to measure, therefore, we may reach wrong conclusions, and the measurement may appear at a lower level than expected.
