Le second xix e siècle est un moment crucial dans la construction, en France, de l’image de la science la présentant comme difficile d’accès et réservée à une élite savante de plus en plus professionnalisée. Progressivement s’impose le mythe d’une séparation nette, dans la production de connaissances, entre des praticiens experts d’un côté et un public curieux mais passif de l’autre. Les vulgarisateurs français contribuent activement à affirmer cette séparation, en défendant l’idée d’une science pour tous plutôt que celle d’une science par tous. Ce mythe rencontre néanmoins de multiples résistances, des mythes concurrents émergent, en particulier celui d’une science démocratique, ouverte et accessible à tous, et dans la pratique, de multiples contre-cultures savantes se développent dans les interstices des représentations dominantes de la science.

L’importance de l’intelligence humaine pour l’adaptation au quotidien n’est plus à démontrer. La notion d’intelligence est cependant victime de nombreux mythes qui viennent obscurcir sa compréhension. Dans le cadre de ce numéro thématique, trois mythes sont abordés : celui selon lequel des enfants à haut QI seraient souvent à risque d’échecs scolaires et psychologiques, le mythe des intelligences multiples du modèle de Gardner (1996) et le mythe voulant que les tests de QI soient biaisés culturellement. L’objectif de ce texte est de présenter sommairement un état des lieux de la situation et de souligner les erreurs de raisonnements de ceux qui promeuvent ces mythes.

Cet article se propose d’explorer la manière dont la présence du mythe dans la littérature de science-fiction est intimement liée à la dimension idéologique et critique de ces œuvres. La démarche adoptée part d’une analyse mythocritique des textes pour aboutir à une mythanalyse permettant d’établir un lien entre les mythes analysés et les grands questionnements que pose l’accélération technoscientifique des xxe et xxie siècles. Cette démarche s’appuie sur l’exemple d’un corpus de textes science-fictionnels limité à l’œuvre de Dan Simmons afin de montrer que celle‑ci, par son substrat mythique, problématise la question de la technoscience dans son rapport à l’histoire, au développement de l’humanité et à la question de l’éthique

Plutôt que le rôle de l'espace dans le récit mythique, les géographes ont intérêt à comprendre si et comment la pensée mythique influence les pratiques spatiales. Tout en s'inspirant du programme platonicien, cet essai en modifie en quelque sorte la visée. Il se base en fait sur une conception assez stricte du mythe et avance l'idée que la pensée mythique est un outil crucial pour comprendre la géographie en tant que construction humaine. Cet essai met en lumière l'appauvrissement théorique et méthodologique qui découle de l'éviction du mythe du référentiel explicatif des processus territoriaux par la science géographique « occidentale », en particulier lors du tournant historique qu'a constitué l'institutionnalisation de cette discipline. Il souligne enfin tout l'intérêt que la discipline géographique actuelle aurait à réintroduire la raison mythique dans les interprétations de la territorialité au sein des grands processus qui animent la scène internationale.

Dans le cadre de l'œuvre de Gilbert Durand, il n'existe pas, à notre connaissance, beaucoup d'études sur sa conception du Mythe. Cette étude, qui se veut approfondie, documentée et réflexive, est basée sur une méthodologie qualitative et herméneutiquement réflexive : elle vise à contribuer à la clarification de la théorie du Mythe chez Gilbert Durand, que nous considérons comme originale, et à ce qu'elle soit connue non seulement des spécialistes, mais aussi et surtout des néophytes en la matière. Dans ce but, nous partons de la définition du Mythe que l'auteur propose dans ses Structures anthropologiques de l'imaginaire (1960) avec l'arrière-plan conceptuel que cette même définition implique. Sur cette base, nous avons structuré le texte de l'article en quatre parties : dans la première, nous nous sommes concentrés sur les concepts constitutifs de la définition du Mythe, à savoir ceux de Schème, d'Archétype et de Symbole ; dans la deuxième, nous avons traité de la sémantique du Mythe; dans la troisième, nous avons essayé d'élucider la relation que le Mythe entretient avec l'Histoire ; enfin, dans la quatrième, nous avons traité de la perpétuité et du retour du Mythe. Nous espérons donc qu'après avoir lu cet article, le lecteur aura une connaissance suffisamment claire de la conception originale du mythe dans l'œuvre durandienne.

Cet article s’intéresse aux légendes et aux mythes qui entourent la figure d’Avicenne (Ibn Sīnā, 980-1037) en Occident. Ces récits ont pour particularité d’avoir pris naissance dès l’époque médiévale, d’avoir connu une évolution après une rupture aux débuts de la Modernité avant de renaître, sous une autre forme, au xix e siècle. On montre ainsi que le mythe du savant réunit actuellement deux courants puissants qui expliquent son succès : le maintien de préjugés orientalistes, et une image naïve de la science et de ses conditions de production.

Prenant en compte à la fois les voies ouvertes par une approche psychanalytique des mythes et ses dangers, cet article étudie les interprétations contemporaines du mythe de Déméter et Perséphone qui le relient à l’ anorexia nervosa , trouble psychosomatique potentiellement mortel caractérisé par le refus de se nourrir et souvent associé au malaise causé par les préjugés de genre, les images amoindrissantes de la féminité et la quête d’agentivité dans une société patriarcale – sujets que de nombreuses versions du mythe soulèvent également. Si l’on peut discuter de l’utilité des références mythiques pour les praticienne·s et patient·s, associer les déesses de l’Antiquité aux troubles de l’alimentation modernes permet d’ouvrir des perspectives interdisciplinaires, féministes et inter-sectionnelles sur le récit antique et de nourrir les débats concernant sa réception, débat auquel participe également la poésie contemporaine autour de Déméter et Perséphone.

Notre étude se penche sur l'histoire et la signification du mot mythe, dans ses acceptions philosophiques, esthétiques, politiques et anthropologiques, avec pour question centrale : le mythe est-il réductible à la domination ? Nous tentons de procéder à une réévaluation du terme qui nous amène à discuter les postulats de la « science du mythe », les postulats de Platon, mais aussi de Marx. Nous analysons pourquoi et comment le mot mythe est devenu au cours du XX ème siècle synonyme de domination (fasciste, capitaliste, patriarcale, etc). Nous tentons de montrer ensuite qu'existent des conceptions du mot mythe différentes, et une tradition poétique qui nous permet de penser le mythe du côté de l'émancipation. Enfin, il nous fallait voir le lien qu'entretenait le mythe avec le rêve, et comment celui-ci peut être pensé en lien avec la question de l'émancipation
We are working on the history and meaning of the word myth, in its philosophical, aesthetic, political and anthropological meanings, with the question: is myth reducible to domination ? We attempt to carry out a re-evaluation of the term which leads us to discuss the postulates of the "science of myth", the postulates of Plato, but also of Marx. We analyze why and how the word myth became synonymous of domination (fascist, capitalist, patriarchal, etc.) during the 20th century. We then try to show that different conceptions of the word myth exist, and a poetic tradition which allows us to think of myth from the side of emancipation. Finally, we want to see the link between the myth and the dream, and how it can be thought of in connection with the question of emancipation

La théorie économique néoclassique est la langue dans laquelle le monde s'exprime, et que la mythodologie permet de designer comme mythique. Le cœur originel du mythe est l'ordre spontané de la main invisible (OSMI), diffusé par un corps sacerdotal d'économistes plus ou moins libéraux. La philosophie des lumières est la source d'un renouveau mythique dissimulé dans le langage de la science et apparu en trois phases : la raison s'exprime dans la science ; la philosophie s'oppose à la science économique, qui l'emporte sur la première en mimétisant la physique (Walras). La représentation imagée débute par les rouages de l'horloge mécanique, et aboutit aux tuyauteries du circuit dont le flux sanguin interne est animé par des hommes nouveaux cruséens. L'individualisme placé au cœur de la modernité est dominé invisiblement par le holisme de la machine. L'OSMI est la face cachée enchantée de la modernité désabusée qui laisse le logos retourner dans le muthos originel. Il répond au nouveau besoin de croire en instituant un sacre immanent. Il télescope poétiquement la réversibilité des mathématiques newtoniennes de l'EG, et l'irréversibilité du temps inscrite dans la sélection darwinienne ; il efface la "bizarrerie" des manipulations de la pensée scientifique par la pensée mythique : le paradigme infalsifiable, les valeurs cachées derrière la neutralité axiologique, la puissance symbolique du langage mathématique déterminé. La finance est l'instrument par lequel les phénomènes réels sont assignés à obéir à l'OSMI ; elle est le double monstrueux d'un monde qu'elle gère par voie de sacrifice avec la complicité d'acteurs sacrificateurs et potentiellement sacrifies. L'OSMI est une structure générique reproductible sans limite, dont la puissance symbolique s'épuise en s'étendant. Neoclassical economic theory is the language by which the world can be understood, and that mythodology allows to show as mythical. The original heart of myth is "spontaneous order of the invisible hand", boadcasted by a sacerdotal body composed of more or less liberal economists. Philosophy of enlightenment is the origin of mythical renovation, dissimulated in the language of science, and which came into sight through three phases : reason talks through science ; philosophy opposes economic science, which get the better of the former by imitating physics (walras). The vivid representation began with the mechanical clock, and now leads to pipes of the circuit throuh which the internal blood flow is animated by the new robinson crusoes. Individualism placed in the heart of modernity is dominated by holism of the machine. The "spontaneous order of the invisible hand" is the enchanted secret side of disappointed modernity which allows the logos to return to the original muthos. He meets the new need to believe, by initiating a immanent sacred object. He poetically telescopes the reversibility of newtonian mathematics of general equilibrium, and the irreversibility of time registered in the darwinian selection ; he eliminate "oddness" of manipulations of scientific thinking by mythical thinking : unfalsifiable paradigm, values hidden behind neutrality, symbolical power of determined mathematical language. Finance is an instrument by which real phenomenons have to obey the myth. It is the monstruous duplicate of a world managed by the way of sacrifice with the complicity of victims. The "spontaneous order of the invisible hand" is a generic structure which can be reproduced without limits, and the power of which is exhausted when expanding. It highlights his oppressive nature to those to whom it is supposed to be useful, and who have democratically lost the means to prescribe human law to him

L'objectif principal que se propose ce travail est de montrer, dans toute sa complexité, le caractère scientifique de la nouvelle science vichienne. L'épistémologie de la Science Nouvelle apparaîtra, à travers notre analyse, comme le résultat de trois composants gnoséologiques fondamentaux: la rhétorique, la jurisprudence et la science de la nature. Sans nier la fonction essentielle des instances sensibles et imaginatives, nous essaierons de montrer l'importance de la détermination rationnelle qui caractérise la Science Nouvelle, et le corpus vichien tout entier. Une telle lecture nous permettra d'envisager le caractère anthropologique tout à fait particulier de la science "relative à la commune nature des nations" et de nous arrêter sur l'interprétation civile du mythe qu'elle contient. Nous essaierons finalement de jeter les bases d'une actualisation et d'une application de l'herméneutique vichienne du mythe en la comparant avec le courant phénoménologique et irrationaliste des études contemporaines de la mythologie et de l'histoire des religions
This study aims to prove the scientific character of Vico's new science and its complexity. The New Science epistemology will appear, through our analyse, the result of three basic components: rhetoric, jurisprudence and natural science. Without denying the fundamental function of sensible and imaginative determinations, we will try to show the importance of rational determination in the New Science, and indeed in Vico's entire output. This reading will allow us to examine the distinctively anthropologic nature of the science "concerning the common nature of the nations" and to dwell upon the civil interpretation of the myth which it provides. Subsequently, we will try to lay the foundations of an actualisation and an application of the vichian hermeneutics of myth, by comparison with the phenomenological and irrationalist tendency of contemporaneous studies of mythology and history of religions

Dans la littérature mythique, il y a une sagesse ancienne que l’on propose d’interpréter à partir de la lecture d’Edgar Poe, et qui peut éclairer l’époque postmoderne et les nouveaux enjeux qu’elle pose à l’Homme. En 1848, Edgar Allan Poe, poète héritier de la tradition mythographique, réalise dans son « poème » cosmogonique Eurêka une expérience hybride mariant l’enquête scientifique, l’intuition paranormale et l’imagination poétique. En reliant les mythes, les sciences physiques et l’évolution de la pensée à l’intuition d’une Réalité sous-jacente, il reconnaît une connexion fondamentale entre l’Être et le Monde, et l’existence de vérités indémontrables par une logique ordinaire, comme le principe de Cohésion ou Cohérence universelle (Consistency) qui relie Tout. Les expériences cognitives les plus récentes font apparaître que les conceptions poétiques de Poe rejoignent les questions émergentes des sciences actuelles concernant l’implication de la mémoire et de la conscience dans la fabrique du réel. Elles sont ici reconnues comme étant intimement liées, produisant par leur activité conjointe des phénomènes qui échappent à une vision classique mais laissent des traces interprétables. Une démarche comparative et transdisciplinaire permet d’explorer avec Poe les facultés propres au vivant et de faire l’épreuve de leur visibilité à différents niveaux de réalité. Suivre l’intuition, à la manière de Poe, permet de générer des pistes de recherche qui ouvrent de nouvelles perspectives à condition d’être testables, c’est pourquoi l’approche herméneutique des textes est complétée par une approche expérimentale explorant d’autres modalités d’une reliance fondamentale entre les êtres et leur écosystème
In mythical literature, there is an ancient wisdom that is proposed to be interpreted from the reading of Edgar Poe, and which can shed light on the postmodern era and the new challenges it sets for man. In 1848, Edgar Allan Poe, a poet heir to the mythographic tradition, in his cosmogonic "poem" Eureka, carried out a hybrid experiment combining scientific inquiry, paranormal intuition and poetic imagination. By linking myths, physical sciences and the evolution of thought to the intuition of an underlying Reality, he recognizes a fundamental connection between Being and the World, and the existence of truths that cannot be demonstrated by an ordinary logic, like the principle of Cohesion or Universal Coherence (Consistency) which links Everything. The most recent cognitive experiments show that Poe's poetic conceptions agree with emerging questions in current science concerning the involvement of memory and consciousness in the making of reality. They are recognized here as being intimately linked, producing by their joint activity phenomena which escape a classical vision but leave interpretable traces. A comparative and transdisciplinary approach makes it possible to explore with Poe the faculties specific to living things and to test their visibility at different levels of reality. Following intuition, like Poe, makes it possible to generate avenues of research that open up new perspectives on condition that they are testable, which is why the hermeneutical approach to texts is complemented by an experimental approach exploring other modalities of a fundamental link between beings and their ecosystem

Ce travail herméneutique interdisciplinaire où littérature et philosophie intimement s’entremêlent et dialoguent avec les sciences dites dures, s’est tout d’abord employé à définir la notion de mythe comme type de récit littéraire illustrant une prise de position quant à une question métaphysique et a révélé le récit ovidien de Pygmalion comme un mythe génésiaque au cœur duquel se trouve l’homme. Cheminant du XVIIIe au XXe siècle au fil de l’histoire des idées européennes, il s’est ensuite arrêté sur les différentes productions littéraires allemandes, françaises et italiennes réinvestissant le mythe à la lumière de la problématique dégagée du texte mère : celle de l’ampleur du pouvoir créateur de l’homme, afin d’en extraire les caractéristiques communes. Dans leur traitement de l’eros et de l’art, ces dernières posent un rapport à autrui et au monde orienté vers une dynamique de création se réalisant à travers un processus analogue, reposant sur les représentations ainsi que l’implication et les dispositions mentales et personnelles du sujet, l’extase, la volonté et la foi. Forts de leurs enseignements et de ce constat, il s’est à son tour emparé de cette question à travers l’élaboration d’un mythologisme anthroposophique convoquant des découvertes ayant eu lieu au XXIe siècle dans le domaine des neurosciences, de la physiologie, de la sémiostylistique, de l’éthique et de l’esthétique. Ce système de pensée, dans une quête de compréhension de ce processus créatif, a mené à la redéfinition d’un Homme alors compris comme essentiellement mû par un instinct représentationnel, un mouvement plasmateur, évoluant entre Créativité, Plaisir et Beauté, à travers l’exercice duquel il réalise sa Liberté
This hermeneutic interdisciplinary work, where literature and philosophy are tightly intertwined and converse with the so-called hard sciences, first proceeds to define the notion of myth as a literary type of story that illustrates a stance on a metaphysical question. It reveals Ovid’s story of Pygmalion as a genesiac myth in which mankind is at the heart. Progressing from the XVIIIe to the XXe century along the history of European ideas, it then halts at the French, German and Italian literary works that revisit the myth, in light of the question drawn from the source text – that of the extent of Man’s creative power – in order to extract the common characteristics. In their study of Art and Eros, they present a relationship to the world and to the others that is directed toward a dynamic of creation that is realized through a similar process based on the representations along with the mental and personal implication and dispositions of the subject, ecstasy, will and faith. In turn, drawing on their lessons and this observation, this work eventually answers this question by elaborating an anthroposophical mythologism that call upon XXIe century discoveries in neurosciences, physiology, semiostylistic, esthetic and ethic. This system, in its quest of understanding this creative process, has led to the redefinition of a Man essentially led by a representational instinct, a creative gesture, moving from Creativity, to Pleasure and Beauty, by which he achieves his Freedom

Notre analyse se trouve à la jonction de deux disciplines, l'histoire des idées et l'étude d'une aire culturelle spécifique, la Russie. Nous cherchons ici à illustrer combien les sciences humaines du XIXe siècle furent les vecteurs des idéologies de leur temps, mais également à affirmer l'importance du thème aryen comme matrice du discours identitaire russe. Le mythe aryen russe au XIXe siècle fut une recherche romantique des origines, l'espace discursif de rencontre entre le sentiment national et des sciences humaines comme l'archéologie, la philologie et l'histoire. L'argument aryaniste est en effet le seul à offrir à la Russie à la fois une généalogie de la nation sur son territoire et une légitimation de son expansion impériale. Le mythe aryen permet également une entrée dans plusieurs problématiques complexes : l'histoire de la pensée russe dite "de droite", en particulier du conservatisme ; la difficile réception de l'idée de race en Russie ; les spécificités du colonialisme et de l'orientalisme russes. Trois grand axes de réflexion sont abordés : 1. Le mythe aryen est tout d'abord un ensemble de postulats théoriques sur la nation et sur ses éléments dits constitutifs (langue, religion, race, territoire, dans des combinaisons et des exclusions spécifiques). 2. Il propose ensuite à cette même nation une nouvelle cosmogonie autour de la question des origines : raisonnements généalogiques, filiations historiques, espaces imaginaires proches ou lointains auxquels se rattacher. 3. Our analysis is at the junction of two disciplines : the history of ideas and the study of a cultural area, that is Russia. We try to illustrate how Human sciences were the ideological vectors in the XIXth century and to affirm the importance of the Aryan theme as a matrix of the Russian discourse about identity. The Russian Aryan myth in the XIXth century was a matrix of the Russian discourse about identity. The Russian Aryan myth in the XIXth century was a romantic myth searching the origins, the discursive meeting space between the national feeling and social sciences as archaeology, philology and history. The Aryanist argument is indeed the only one which offers Russia a genealogy of the nation on its territory and legitimises its imperial expansion. The Aryan myth also permits to enter a complex problematic : the history of the so-called 'right wing' thought, and especially of conservatism ; the difficult acceptance of the idea of race in Russia ; the specificities of Russian colonialism and orientalism. There are the three main axes of reflection : 1. The Aryan myth is first a corpus of theoretical postulates on the nation and its so-called constituent elements (language, religion, race, territory, etc. In specific combinations and exclusions). 2. It then offers this nation a new cosmogony about the question of origins : genealogical reasoning, historic filiations, near or distant imaginary spaces to be connected with. 3. It is finally a discursive mode on the colonial experience, an intellectual recognition of the advance of the Russian Empire in the name of the return in the Aryan homeland

AbstractOn the basis of the literature on myths and narrative tropes in science and religion, this chapter enquires into RKC mythical narratives to highlight the relevance of certain key figures, events and objects that constitute the main characters around which these communities weave their common goals, visions and sense of belonging. Exploring the construction of, and the tropes surrounding, these mythical narratives—both scientific and religious—this analysis also emphasises the way such narratives stimulate everyday discussions, practices and even ritual forms within RKCs. In addition to martyrdom stories, a special focus on the myth surrounding the story of Ryke Geerd Hamer and the foundation of German New Medicine also serves to highlight an archetypal path in which the narrative tropes of mythic science and religious prophets converge. The chapter concludes by highlighting how compound martyrdom, mythical science and religious prophet stories, together with the ritual, social and cultural practices that they trigger, consolidate the demarcation between social worlds, contributing to the distinctions between an ‘us’–members of refused knowledge communities–and a ‘them’, i.e. the rest of society.

Neuroscience has witnessed profound scientific and technological advancements over recent decades, transforming our understanding of the brain and leading to significant improvements in both diagnosing and treating neurological disorders. This field of knowledge is an exciting topic for researchers and health professionals, psychologists, educators, and even the general public. The rapid expansion and the complexities of neurosciences have also led to the emergence and spread of several neuromyths. These myths concern various misconceptions or unfounded beliefs arising from incorrect interpretations of neuroscience research and its application in educational settings or other areas. Healthy ageing and maintaining cognitive health are pivotal aspects of life quality in senior populations. As the importance of lifelong education is recognised worldwide, educational endeavours in the form of senior universities play a crucial role in supporting an active and engaged elderly community. This study investigates the prevalence of neuromyths among senior citizens enrolled at senior universities and analyses which attitudes they adopt to maintain their cognitive health. To achieve that purpose, a questionnaire was developed and administered to 64 senior citizens (n=64) enrolled in two senior universities from urban areas in the northern region of Portugal. The questionnaire covered prevalent neuromyths, such as the belief in using only 10% of the brain and other diet-related and cognitive function misconceptions. The results indicate the prevalence of some neuromyths in Portuguese senior citizens attending senior universities. Nevertheless, participants demonstrated some knowledge regarding practices that contribute to good cognitive health. These findings highlight the need for educational outreach and public engagement initiatives by neuroscientists, educators, or science communicators, which can help to demystify brain science and dispel popular neuromyths. By fostering a better understanding of how the brain actually works, we can ensure that the benefits of neuroscience advancements are more fully realised across society and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their cognitive health and well-being.

Robert Duncan Milne (1844-99), from Cupar, Fife, was a pioneering author of science fiction stories, most of which appeared in San Francisco’s Argonaut magazine in the 1880s and ’90s. SF historian Sam Moskowitz credits Milne with being the first full-time SF writer, and his contribution to the genre is arguably greater than anyone else including Stevenson and Conan Doyle, yet it has all but disappeared into oblivion. Milne was fascinated by science. He drew on the work of Scottish physicists and inventors such as James Clark Maxwell and Alexander Graham Bell into the possibilities of electromagnetic forces and new communications media to overcome distances in space and time. Milne wrote about visual time-travelling long before H.G. Wells. He foresaw virtual ‘tele-presencing’, remote surveillance, mobile phones and worldwide satellite communications – not to mention climate change, scientific terrorism and drone warfare, cryogenics and molecular reengineering. Milne also wrote on alien life forms, artificial immortality, identity theft and personality exchange, lost worlds and the rediscovery of extinct species. ‘A New Palingenesis’, originally published in The Argonaut on July 7th 1883, and adapted in this comic, is a secular version of the resurrection myth. Mary Shelley was the first scientiser of the occult to rework the supernatural idea of reanimating the dead through the mysterious powers of electricity in Frankenstein (1818). In Milne’s story, in which Doctor S- dissolves his terminally ill wife’s body in order to bring her back to life in restored health, is a striking, further modernisation of Frankenstein, to reflect late-nineteenth century interest in electromagnetic science and spiritualism. In particular, it is a retelling of Shelley’s narrative strand about Frankenstein’s aborted attempt to shape a female mate for his creature, but also his misogynistic ambition to bypass the sexual principle in reproducing life altogether. By doing so, Milne interfused Shelley’s updating of the Promethean myth with others. ‘A New Palingenesis’ is also a version of Pygmalion and his male-ordered, wish-fulfilling desire to animate his idealised female sculpture, Galatea from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, perhaps giving a positive twist to Orpheus’s attempt to bring his corpse-bride Eurydice back from the underworld as well? With its basis in spiritualist ideas about the soul as a kind of electrical intelligence, detachable from the body but a material entity nonetheless, Doctor S- treats his wife as an ‘intelligent battery’. He is thus able to preserve her personality after death and renew her body simultaneously because that captured electrical intelligence also carries a DNA-like code for rebuilding the individual organism itself from its chemical constituents. The descriptions of the experiment and the body’s gradual re-materialisation are among Milne’s most visually impressive, anticipating the X-raylike anatomisation and reversal of Griffin’s disappearance process in Wells’s The Invisible Man (1897). In the context of the 1880s, it must have been a compelling scientisation of the paranormal, combining highly technical descriptions of the Doctor’s system of electrically linked glass coffins with ghostly imagery. It is both dramatic and highly visual, even cinematic in its descriptions, and is here brought to life in the form of a comic.

The purpose of this text or dissertation is to throw some basic light on a fundamental problem concerning manhood, namely the question of evil, its main sources, dynamics and importance for human attitudes and behaviour. The perspective behind the analysis itself is that of psychology. Somebody, or many, may feel at bit nervous by the word “evil” itself. It may very well be seen as too connected to religion, myth and even superstition. Yet those who are motivated to lose oneself in the subject retain a deep interest in human destructiveness, malevolence and hate, significant themes pointing at threatening prospects for mankind. The text is organized or divided into four main ordinary chapters, the three first of them organized or divided into continuous and numbered sections. A crucial point or question is of cause how to define evil itself. It can of cause be done both intentional, instrumental and by consequence. Other theorists however have stated that the concept of evil exclusively rests on a myth originated in the Judean-Christian conception of Satan and ultimate evil. This last argument presupposes evil itself as non-existent in the real rational world. It seems however a fact that most people attach certain basic meaning to the concept, mainly that it represents ultimately bad and terrible actions and behaviour directed toward common people for the purpose of bringing upon them ultimate pain and suffer. However, there is no room for essentialism here, meaning that we simply can look “inside” some original matter to get to know what it “really” is. Rather, a phenomenon gets its identity from the constituted meaning operating within a certain human communities and contexts loaded with intentionality and inter-subjective meaning. As mentioned above, the concept of evil can be interpreted both instrumental and intentional, the first being the broadest of them. Here evil stands for behaviour and human deeds having terrifying or fatal consequences for subjects and people or in general, regardless of the intentions behind. The intentional interpretation however, links the concept to certain predispositions, characteristics and even strong motives in subjects, groups and sometimes political systems and nations. I will keep in mind and clear the way for both these perspectives for the discussion in prospect. This essay represents a psychological perspective on evil, but makes it clear that a more or less complete account of such a psychological view also should include a thorough understanding or integration of some basic social and even biological assumptions. However, I consider a social psychological position of significant importance, especially because in my opinion it represents some sort of coordination of knowledge and theoretical perspectives inherent in the subject or problem itself, the main task here being to integrate perspectives of a psychological as well as social and biological kind. Since humans are essential social creatures, the way itself to present knowledge concerning the human condition, must be social of some sort and kind, however not referring to some kind of reductionism where social models of explanation possess or holds monopoly. Social and social psychological perspectives itself represents parts of the whole matter regarding understanding and explanation of human evil. The fact that humans present, or has to represent themselves as humans among other humans, means that basically a social language is required both to explain and describe human manners and ways of being. This then truly represents its own way or, more correctly, level or standard of explanation, which makes social psychology some sort of significant, though not sufficient. More substantial, the vision itself of integrating different ontological and theoretical levels and objects of science for the purpose of manifesting or make real a full-fledged psychological perspective on evil, should be considered or characterized a meta-psychological perspective. The text is partially constructed as a review of existing theories and theorists concerning the matter of evil and logically associated themes such as violence, mass murder, genocide, antisocial behaviour in general, aggression, hate and cruelty. However, the demands of making a theoretical distinction between these themes, although connected, is stressed. Above all, an integral perspective combining different scientific disciplines is aimed at.
