AbstractGround reaction force is often used to predict the potential risk of injuries but may not coincide with the forces applied to commonly injured regions of the foot. This study examined the forces applied to the foot, and the associated moment arms made by three foot strike patterns. 10 male runners ran barefoot along a runway at 3.3 m/s using forefoot, midfoot, and rearfoot strikes. The Achilles tendon and ground reaction force moment arms represented the shortest distance between the ankle joint axis and the line of action of each force. The Achilles tendon and joint reaction forces were calculated by solving equations of foot motion. The Achilles tendon and joint reaction forces were greatest for the forefoot strike (2 194 and 3 137 N), followed by the midfoot strike (1 929 and 2 853 N), and the rearfoot strike (1 526 and 2 394 N). The ground reaction force moment arm was greater for the forefoot strike than for the other foot strikes, and was greater for the midfoot strike than for the rearfoot strike. Meanwhile, there were no differences in the Achilles tendon moment arm among all foot strikes. These differences were attributed mainly to differences in the ground reaction force moment arm among the three foot strike patterns.

AbstractEffects of early and permanent footwear use are not well understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of habituation to footwear on foot strike patterns of children and adolescents. Healthy habitually barefoot and shod participants (aged 6–18 years) from South Africa (n=288) and Germany (n=390) performed multiple 20-m jogging and running trials with and without shoes. Each foot strike was captured using a high-speed camera to determine a rearfoot or non-rearfoot strike. The probability of a rearfoot strike in both cohorts and each age was analyzed by using a mixed-effects logistic regression adjusted for possible confounders. Habitually barefoot children showed a higher probability of using rearfoot strikes than habitually shod children (p<0.001). The probability was age-dependent and decreased in habitually barefoot children with age (ORbarefoot-jogging=0.82, 95% CI, 0.71 to 0.96, p=0.014; ORbarefoot-running=0.58, 95% CI, 0.50 to 0.67, p<0.001 and ORshod-running=0.68, 95% CI, 0.59 to 0.79, p<0.001). In habitually shod children, the probability increased significantly for shod jogging (OR=1.19, 95% CI, 1.05 to 1.35, p=0.006). To conclude, foot strike patterns of children are influenced by habituation to footwear. Younger habitually barefoot children show higher rates of rearfoot strikes for shod and barefoot running, and it converges in later adolescence.

A current generation type return stroke model which can take into account the possible modifications of the return stroke properties by the soil conductivity at the strike point of the lightning flash is introduced. The model is also capable of incorporating the reflection of the current at the ground end of the return stroke channel. In this paper, this return stroke model is used to investigate (a) the effect of the ground conductivity at the strike point on the source electromagnetic fields generated by return strokes and (b) the effect of current reflection at ground level on the electromagnetic field generated by return strokes. The source electromagnetic fields are the electromagnetic fields generated by lightning flashes calculated in such a way that they are not distorted by propagation effects. The results obtained show that the ground conductivity at the strike point does not significantly influence the return stroke current peak or the radiation field peak for ground conductivities higher than about 0.001 S/m. However, strike points with very poor conductivities (lower than 0.001 S/m) would result in a decrease of the peak electric field. In contrast to the peak values of the lightning current and the electric field, the peak values of the time derivatives of the lightning current and electric field are significantly reduced when the strike point of the lightning flash is located over a finitely conducting ground. The inclusion of the current reflection at ground level influences significantly the saturation of the close electric fields. The current reflection also gives rise to residual electric fields, a difference in the field levels generated by the dart leader and the return stroke. The residual field decreases as the fraction of the reflected current decreases.

This study examines the effect of a strike on the wealth of shareholders, and whether there is a difference in the effects during various phases of a stock market cycle. Although a significant loss of shareholders' value is observed at the beginning of a strike, most of the losses are recovered upon the settlement of the strike. During a bear market, the negative impact of a strike on a firm's value is more profound, and the firm does not fully recover its value when the strike ends. On the other hand, in a bull market, struck firms not only suffer a less severe loss but also experience a quicker rebound in their firms' value. Since the duration of a strike during a bear and bull market period is not significantly different, we conclude that the observed difference in the impact of a strike during different phases of a stock market cycle cannot be attributed to the difference in the duration of a strike.

To study the effect of a bird striking engine fan on the rotor system, a low-pressure rotor system dynamic model based on a real aero-engine structure was established. Dynamic equations were derived considering the case of the bird strike force which transferred to the rotor system. The bird strike force was obtained from the bird strike process simulation in LS-DYNA, where a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) mallard model was constructed using a computed tomography (CT) scanner, and finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the bird strike on an actual fan model. The dynamic equations were solved using the Newmark-β method. The effect of rotational speeds on the rotor system dynamics after bird strike was investigated and discussed. Results show that the maximum bird impact force can reach 104 kN at 3772 r/min. Impact time is only 0.06 s, but the bird strike on fan blades lead to a transient shock on the rotor system. Under the action of transient shocks, the rotor system displacement in the horizontal and vertical directions increase sharply, and the closer the mass point is to the fan, the more it is affected; the vibration amplitude at the fan will increase 15 times within 0.1 s of the bird strike and will gradually decrease with the effect of damping. The dynamics of the rotor system changes from a stable single periodic motion to a complex irregular quasi-periodic motion after a bird strike, and the strike force excites the first-order vibrational mode of the rotor system. This phenomenon occurs at all speeds when bird strikes occur. Bird strikes will cause resonance in the rotor system, which may cause damage to the engine. It was also seen that the bird strike force, and hence the effects on the rotor system, increases as the engine rotational speed increases; the peak force is larger and the number of peaks has increased. The impact force at 3772 r/min is 99.5 kN higher than at 836 r/min, and three additional peaks emerged. This effect is more reflected in the amplitude, and the overall vibration characteristics do not change. Combining the bird strike with the rotor dynamics calculation, the dynamic response of the aero-engine rotor system to bird strike is studied at different flight stages, which is of guiding significance for power evaluation of aero engines after bird strike.

Despite the significant implications of doctors’ strikes for public health, little research has been done on the effects of doctors’ strike on patient mortality. In this study, we attempted to assess the effects on patient mortality of a strike that was carried out by doctors in South Korea in June 2000. The data for this study came from Statistic Korea (KOSTAT)’s ‘Causes of Death Statistics’ for the period 1997 to 2003. The data was analyzed with the four methods most commonly used in international studies on doctor strikes. The analysis shows that there is no significant difference between the disease-related death rate for June 2000 and that for the same month in other analyzed years. Similarly, there is no significant difference between the disease-related death rate for June 2000 and the rates for May and July, either in 2000 or in other analyzed years. However, the disease-related death rate during the strike in June 2000 is slightly lower than the rates for the sixday period immediately prior to and immediately following the strike. This suggests that, contrary to what many people believe, the disease-related death rate did not increase during the doctor’s strike in June 2000. This study is the first to provide statistical evidence concerning the effects of doctors’ strikes on hospital mortality rates in South Korea.

Purposes: To determine actions during bouts that generate serious enough injury to stop the bout; verifying the injury incidence, types, and prevalence of doctor stoppages (doc-stoppage); and identify potential risk factors by analyzing technical-tactical profiles for injury in sanctioned mixed martial arts bouts taking place over a 12-y period. Methods: This research analyzed 440 paired mixed martial arts matches separated by doc-stoppage (n = 220) and no doc-stoppage (n = 220) from 2002 to 2014. Technical knockouts for doc-stoppage were diagnosed and managed by attending ringside doctors, and the time–motion variables were categorized into total combat time separated by low- or high-intensity activities per round, stand-up, or groundwork actions, P ≤ .05. Results: The main cause of injuries in doc-stoppage situations was due to facial injuries (>90%), with 87.1% occurring after striking actions during the second round. Lacerations were the leading type of injury, which occurred with 80% frequency. The results showed differences between doc-stoppage and no doc-stoppage for standing combat with low-intensity actions (130.6 [8.5] s vs 83.3 [6.9] s for first round; 115.7 [10.5] s vs 100.1 [9.6] s for second round, and 121.5 [19.5] s vs 106.3 [11.7] s for third round) and total strike attempts (34.5, 23.0–51.8 vs 25.0, 12.0–40.8); in standing combat, head strike attempts (21, 10–33 vs 11, 4–21) and body strikes (2.5, 1.0–5.8 vs 1.0–2), and in groundwork combat, head strikes landed (0.0–3.0 vs 0.0–5.0). Conclusions: This research showed higher values of strike attempts with 2 main orientations, namely the head (on the ground and in stand-up actions) and body (in stand-up actions), and may provide important information regarding the technical knockout and when it can be called by officials supervising mixed martial arts bouts.

AbstractGait retraining is a method for management of patellofemoral pain, which is a common ailment among recreational runners. The present study investigated the effects of gait retraining from rearfoot strike to forefoot strike on running economy, heart rate, and respiratory exchange ratio immediately post-retraining and one-month post-retraining in recreational runners with patellofemoral pain. Knee pain was also measured. Sixteen participants (n=16) were randomly placed in the control (n=8) or experimental (n=8) group. A 10-minute treadmill RE test was performed by all subjects. The experimental group performed eight gait retraining running sessions where foot strike pattern was switched from rearfoot strike to forefoot strike, while the control group received no intervention. There were no significant differences for running economy (p=0.26), respiratory exchange ratio (p=0.258), or heart rate (p=0.248) between the groups. Knee pain reported on a visual analog scale was also significantly reduced (p<0.05) as a result of retraining. The present study demonstrates that retraining from rearfoot strike to forefoot strike did not affect running economy up to one-month post-retraining while reducing running-related patellofemoral pain.

The growing importance of Credit agency rating in the economic indicators for a country necessitates investigating the impact of various indicators on credit agency ratings. South Africa is a country which has experienced an increase in prolonged, violent and unprotected strike action. This study aimed to determine the impact of this labour relations action on the country s credit ratings over the last 15 years and the consequent related economic factors. Credit rating agencies do not specifically identify strike actions as a key indicator nor do they indicate which indicators dictate the outcome of the ratings granted. Twelve indicators were measured using a quantitative approve of hypothesis and statistical modeling. The study used the interrelated database of The Department of Labour, The PRS Group, Stats SA and studies by Hammer, Kogan, & Lejeune as well as the published indicators of Standard & Poor s, Moodys and Fitch. This study further used the scatter plots and t - tests to determine the relationship between the indicators and strike action. These were correlated using Pearson s correlation theory in order to substantiate the findings of the scatter plot and t test. Strike action was found to have an effect on the ratings granted. Eight of the twelve indicators correlated negatively with ratings of Standard & Poors indicating that if strike action increased ratings would downgrade. Strike action plays a fundament role in the outcome of ratings granted. This is due to the effect strike action has on the driving indicators. Wages lost during strike action has a 99% correlation with the fluctuation of ratings granted. Ratings determining interest rates and the amount of foreign direct investment into South Africa. With the results as indicated, South Africa s government needs to re-evaluate the significance of strike action as a legal for of resolution and the parameters dictating it. Alternative means need to be explored that supports the growth of South Africa for it to transition from a developing country into an advanced economy.

Swing contracts are structured products mostly traded on energy and gas markets, tailor-made to handle simultaneously price and volume risk arising from the modern liberalized markets. This thesis deals with some specific swing contracts relevant for the gas market. In gas market, swing contracts are also known as take or pay. They are long-term supply contracts which allow flexibility of delivery: the holder of such a contract has multiple exercise rights and can decide the amount exercised as well, hedging the volume risk caused by a frequent demand fluctuation which in practice is impossible to foresee in the long period. Moreover, such type of contracts can be also seen as a strip of spread options on gas market spot price and the contractual price (called strike): in this view, they can be used to hedge the price fluctuation risk. On the other hand, even if the holder can exercise the option with a volume control, such control has however to satisfy some upper and lower limits at all times as well as a total volume, so the given flexibility need to be optimised, i.e. one must know the optimal execution of this flexibility. Today, the correct valuation of these type of contracts is important both for trading purposes as well as for portfolio optimization. In fact, after the recent liberalization, the price of such contracts is negotiated between agents and no more set by regulators. On the other hand, the embedded flexibilities may be used not only to manage demand fluctuation, but also to make profit against local market price. In this thesis we model, in a continuous time framework, a gas swing contract in the spirit of [6], with one additional state variable corresponding to a stochastic strike price. Since, in real contracts, the strike is a market index which is updated monthly, this results in a mixed discrete/continuous stochastic control problem that we reduce to the usual continuous time situation by adding another state variable, corresponding to an index rolled-over in continuous time. The price of a swing contract is then equal to the value function of one sequence of Markov control problems, each one corresponding to a period between two consecutive changing dates of the index. After that, we prove that the value function of the corresponding control problem is the unique viscosity solution of the resulting Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation, and that the value function is smooth enough to ensure the existence of an optimal strategy, that we find out. Briefly spoken, this is the content of the first two chapters of this thesis where, after having framed the valuation problem as a stochastic optimal control problem, an introductory part on viscosity solutions is then applied to the particular problem at hand. This entails in some new results in the theory of viscosity solutions for parabolic nonlinear equations stemming from these swing options. After having found the HJB equations, which become nonlinear partial differential equations, the problem is then to solve them. To do this, in the third chapter we present a finite difference (FD) method for solving the HJB equations numerically. We derive explicitly the boundary conditions for a particular model, when both gas and strike price are supposed to be in the class of the one-factor Schwartz-Smith dynamics. More in detail, we suppose that the log-prices follow Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes driven by two correlated Brownian motions. Also, the third chapter presents the popular Least Square Monte Carlo (LSMC) algorithm, originally developed by Longstaff-Schwartz for valuing American options and here extended to the present problem. This algorithm is based on the backward solution of the discrete-time version of the control problem. It regresses the continuation value in the Bellman equation to the current available information, obtained using Monte Carlo simulations. Two critical steps using the LSMC algorithm are the choice of both type and number of the basis functions used in the regression; we approach this problem adapting to our case the radial basis function approximation introduced in [11] for storage structured products, which seems very appropriate and interesting for such applications. Several comparison examples are then numerically analysed, in particular the effect that the number of basis functions and the number of simulated paths have on the solution of LSMC as well as the efficiency of the FD method. Some conclusion on the comparison between the two algorithms ends the chapter. The last chapter is from the published paper [17] and deals with the so-called make-up clauses, which extend the swing option previously studied by allowing to the holder of the contract more flexibility among years. From a technical point of view, a swing contract with an embedded make-up clause can not be any more split into yearly contracts, but one must consider the whole contract at once, typically lasting over several years (usually from 3 to 5). To approach the complexity of such problem, another numerical method popular among practitioners is introduced for the purpose of pricing, namely lattice of trees. After having presented the algorithm and analysed its computational cost, the fourth chapter ends with many numerical examples testing for the swing option price's dependency on various crucial parameters
I contratti swing nei mercati dell'energia e del gas sono prodotti strutturati creati su misura per gli operatori al fine di gestire contemporaneamente il rischio derivante dalle variazioni del prezzo di mercato e dall'incertezza volumetrica dovuta alla continua e imprevedibile fluttuazione della domanda. La presente tesi si occupa di un particolare tipo di contratto swing, frequentemente scambiato tra grossi operatori del mercato del gas naturale. I contratti swing nei mercati del gas sono noti anche come take-or-pay e sono contratti di fornitura a lungo termine che permettono flessibilità nel ritiro del gas: l'acquirente possiede infatti la possibilità (ma non l'obbligo) di decidere sia quando sia quanto gas ritirare, essendo tuttavia obbligato a soddisfare dei vincoli di quantità minima e massima sia su ciascun periodo di ritiro (solitamente il giorno) sia complessivamente sull'anno. Da un lato, tale flessibilità volumetrica ben si adatta a soddisfare una domanda altalenante e imprevedibile. Dall'altro lato, un contratto swing può semplicisticamente essere visto come una strip di opzioni sullo spread tra il prezzo del gas di mercato e il prezzo contrattuale di ritiro: in quest'ottica, esso diventa un ottimo strumento di gestione del rischio derivante dalle fluttuazioni di prezzo nel breve periodo, permettendo di non esercitare, o di esercitare il minimo possibile, nei momenti avversi. La corretta valutazione di simili contratti è oggi di grande importanza sia per ragioni di trading, essendo il prezzo di tali opzioni contrattato direttamente tra i players del mercato e non più imposto come durante il regime regolamentato, sia per ragioni di ottimizzazione di portafoglio, poiché le flessibilità volumetriche offerte possono potenzialmente essere usate anche per generare puri profitti. Partendo da quanto esposto in [6] per i mercati energy, in questa tesi si descrive e risolve, a tempo continuo, il problema del pricing di un contratto swing tipico dei mercati gas, in cui sia il prezzo di mercato quanto il prezzo contrattuale (prezzo strike, o indice) sono aleatori. In pratica, il prezzo strike viene aggiornato mensilmente, mentre il prezzo di mercato cambia con granularità almeno giornaliera: tecnicamente questo origina un problema di controllo ottimo stocastico in cui una variabile è discreta, mentre tutte le altre sono continue. Per superare questa difficoltà, e ridurre il problema ad uno classico a solo tempo continuo, si introduce una variabile di stato ad hoc, corrispondente alla dinamica a tempo continuo dell'indice. Tale variabile continua verrà successivamente campionata ad opportuni intervalli di tempo per ottenere la reale successione discreta di strikes contrattuali. Dopodiché, si dimostra che il prezzo del contratto è dato da una serie di problemi di controllo ottimo, ciascuno dei quali viene risolto all'interno di un periodo tra due cambi consecutivi dello strike. Si dimostra quindi che le funzioni valore di tali problemi di controllo ottimo sono l'unica soluzione di viscosità delle equazioni di Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) associate a ciascun problema, e che tali soluzioni sono sufficientemente regolari da garantire l'esistenza del controllo ottimo. Sommariamente, questo è il contenuto dei primi due capitoli, nei quali, dopo aver richiamato la nozione e i principali risultati noti sulle soluzioni di viscosità per i problemi di controllo ottimo, la teoria classica viene estesa ed applicata al problema in oggetto, portando ad alcuni nuovi risultati per le soluzioni di viscosità di equazioni paraboliche non lineari. Il terzo capitolo è dedicato ai metodi numerici. Dopo aver ricavato l'equazione HJB il problema si sposta alla soluzione della stessa. A tal fine, si introduce uno schema di soluzione numerica basato sulle differenze finite. Tale algoritmo necessita di condizioni al contorno sui domini di soluzione, che vengono ricavate analiticamente nell'ipotesi in cui la dinamica dei prezzi di gas e indice segua un caso particolare del modello di Schwartz-Smith ad un fattore, cioè quando si suppone che il logaritmo dei prezzi sia un processo di Ornstein-Uhlenbeck guidato da due moti Browniani correlati. Uno studio empirico, attraverso un caso numerico, sulla stabilità dell'algoritmo FD al variare della discretizzazione del dominio temporale e spaziale completa la parte analitica. Al fine di confrontare i risultati ottenuti con la best practice in uso nelle aziende, il popolare algoritmo noto come Least Square Monte Carlo, originariamente sviluppato da Longstaff e Schwartz per valutare opzioni di tipo americano, viene adattato al problema del pricing di contratti swing. Questo algoritmo, molto usato tra i practitioners, risolve un'approssimazione a tempo discreto del problema originale usando la ricorsione all'indietro. Ad ogni iterazione dell'algoritmo, il valore di continuazione nell'equazione di Bellman a tempo discreto viene regredito sull'informazione presente a quell'istante, ottenuta tramite delle simulazioni Monte Carlo. Due punti in questo tipo di algoritmo risultano essere particolarmente critici: la scelta del tipo e del numero di funzioni di base usate nella regressione, nonchè il numero di simulazioni Monte Carlo adottate. Per quanto riguarda la scelta del tipo di funzioni, seguendo e adattando al caso presente quanto sviluppato in [11], viene introdotto un metodo di regressione basato su funzioni radiali di base, che sembra ben adattarsi a problemi di pricing di contratti strutturati. Riguardo invece l'effetto della scelta del numero di basi e del numero di simulazioni usate nell'algoritmo LSMC, viene presentato uno studio empirico attraverso casi numerici. L'ultimo capitolo riprende quanto già pubblicato in [17] ed estende la valutazione di contratti swing in cui è presente una clausola chiamata di make-up, che in pratica permette più flessibilità nel ritiro del gas abbassando il livello minimo di ritiro di un certo anno, e forzando in uno o più anni successivi il richiamo del gas non preso. Tecnicamente, quando tale clausola è presente, non è più possibile separare il problema di valutazione sugli anni, ma è necessario considerare l'intero intervallo temporale su cui è scritta la clausola di make-up (solitamente da 3 a 5 anni). Per affrontare la complessità del pricing di un tale contratto nel capitolo si introduce un algoritmo basato su alberi, noto come lattice of trees. Dopo un'accurata descrizione di tale algoritmo, anche da un punto di vista di complessità computazionale, il quarto capitolo termina con un'applicazione reale dell'algoritmo di pricing volto ad esaminare l'impatto di vari fattori di mercato e parametri contrattuali sul prezzo di un ipotetico contratto swing

The geometry, deformation mechanism and kinematics of the Sü

Fault Zone is investigated by using remotely sensed data including Landsat TM and ASTER imagery combined with SRTM, and stereo-aerial photographs. They are used to extract information related to regional lineaments and tectono-morphological characteristics of the SFZ. Various image processing and enhancement techniques including contrast enhancement, PCA, DS and color composites are applied on the imagery and three different approaches including manual, semi automatic and automatic lineament extraction methods are followed. Then the lineaments obtained from ASTER and Landsat imagery using manual and automatic methods are overlaid to produce a final lineaments map. The results have indicated that, the total number and length of the lineaments obtained from automatic is more than other methods while the percentages of overlapping lineaments for the manual method is more than the automatic method which indicate that the lineaments from automatic method does not discriminate man made features which result more lineaments and less overlapping ratio with respect to final map. It is revealed from the detail analysis that, the SFZ displays characteristic deformation patterns of strike-slip faults, such as pressure ridges, linear fault controlled valleys, deflected stream courses, rotated blocks and juxtaposition of stratigraphical horizons in macroscopic scale. In addition to these, kinematic analyses carried out using fault slip data indicated that the Sü
rgü
Fault Zone is dextral strike-slip fault zone with a reverse component of slip and cumulative displacement along the fault is more than 2 km.

Free radicals and oxidative stress play important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases including atherosclerosis, stroke, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer'
s dementia. The activity of paraoxonase (PON1) aganist phenylacetate is known as arylesterase (ARE). Paraoxonase is an esterase associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and contributes to the protective role of this lipoprotein on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation. Oxidized LDL is known to play a central role in early events in the progression of atherosclerosis which is a risk factor for stroke. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) catalyze the conjugation of nonpolar compounds to reduced glutathione (GSH) and detoxify toxic metabolites produced within the cell by oxidative stress to protect cells from oxidant injury. v The maximum ARE enzyme activity was detected at 10 mM Tris-HCl buffer, pH 8.0 and at 45 °
C. ARE enzyme was saturated with its substrate phenylacetate around 20 mM concentration. The apparent Km and Vmax values of human blood serum ARE for phenylacetate were found as 1.66 mM and 3300 nmol/min/mg, respectively. The maximum GST enzyme activity was detected at 2 mM potassium phosphate buffer, pH 5.5 and at 65 °
C. GST enzyme was saturated with its substrate, CDNB around 4.5 mM concentration and with its cofactor, GSH around 8 mM concentration. The apparent Km and Vmax values of human blood serum GST for CDNB substrate were found as 2.8 mM and 0.43 nmol/min/mg and for GSH were found as 4.11 mM and 0.23 nmol/min/mg, respectively. In addition, effects of three different heavy metal ions, Cd+2, Hg+2 and Ni+2, on human blood serum ARE and GST activity were studied and half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) were determined. The main objective of this study was to investigate the human blood serum ARE and GST activities in patient and control groups using the optimized conditions. For this purpose, blood samples were collected from 172 ischemic stroke patients and 105 controls. Then serum obtained from blood samples were used to determine ARE and GST activities. The mean of ARE activity in patient group (n=172, 109.9 ±
32.5 U/mL ) was insignificantly lower than the mean of ARE activity in control group (n=105, 113.5 ±
33.1 U/mL, P=0.284). GST activity of the patients (10.8 ±
4.4 U/L) was insignificantly higher than that of controls (10.5 ±
4.2 U/L, P=0.483 ). In addition, statistical analysis showed hypertension, diabetes and HDL as significant risk factors of stroke.

PURPOSE: Stroke is a high-incidence cerebrovascular disease with elevated morbidity that results in impairments such as functional disabilities. This study aimed to investigate the functional evolution of individuals in the first six months post-stroke. METHOD: Longitudinal study with 42 stroke patients. The functional independence measure (FIM) and The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) were used by multidisciplinary staff 3 times in each participant; the first application was at admission to rehabilitation and the others three and six months later. RESULTS: Sample predominantly female (57%), married (52%), mean age 65.26 ?10.72 years, elementary schooling level (43%), ischemic stroke (91%), and right cerebral hemisphere (74%). Motor FIM scores and NIHSS scale showed improvement in the 3 evaluations, with significant p-value (<0.001). There was a strong relation between motor FIM evolution and NIHSS evolution (r = - 0.69 p-value< 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that functional evolution at 6 months post-stroke was significant and the smaller the evolution of clinical impairment in these patients, the larger the evolution of their functional independence. The study is important because it allows a more appropriate therapeutic planning according with functional evolution in stroke rehabilitation
O Acidente Vascular Cerebral - AVC ? uma doen?a cerebrovascular que corresponde a um dos principais motivos de incapacidade e mortalidade a n?vel mundial, tendo como conseq??ncia comprometimentos cognitivos e funcionais. OBJETIVO: Este estudo objetivou investigar a evolu??o da cogni??o e da independ?ncia funcional de pacientes p?s-AVC agudo em processo de reabilita??o. M?TODO: Por meio de uma abordagem multidisciplinar envolvendo distintas ?reas da sa?de (Fisioterapia, Neurologia, Psicologia, Terapia Ocupacional e Fonoaudiologia), esta pesquisa proporcionou a elucida??o do objeto de estudo relacionado aos dom?nios cognitivos e funcionais de pacientes p?s-AVC. O Estudo desenvolvido foi do tipo observacional e longitudinal com 42 indiv?duos p?s-AVC agudo. O Mini Exame do Estado Mental (MEEM), a Medida de Independ?ncia Funcional (MIF) e a Escala de Severidade Cl?nica (NIHSS) foram utilizados para avaliar a cogni??o, a fun??o e a severidade cl?nica do AVC respectivamente. Para an?lise estat?stica dos dados utilizou-se o programa SPSS vers?o 15.0 com emprego do Teste de Friedman e do teste de Wilcoxon com corre??o de Bonferroni. RESULTADOS: Amostra predominantemente feminina (57%), casada (52%) com n?vel de escolaridade fundamental (43%) e m?dia de idade 65,26 ?10,72 anos. Houve maior preval?ncia do AVC tipo Isqu?mico (91%), sendo o Hemisf?rio cerebral direito o mais acometido (74%). A an?lise evolutiva da MIF evidenciou evolu??o significativa para a pontua??o total (p= 0,001) e para todos os dom?nios espec?ficos (p<0,05). J? a an?lise do MEEM xiv evidenciou evolu??o significativa apenas para indiv?duos escolarizados com pvalor para pontua??o total p=0,008 e para os dom?nios espec?ficos Orienta??o Espacial (p=0,010) e Linguagem (p =0,010). A evolu??o da cogni??o e da fun??o apresentou rela??o negativa e significativa com a evolu??o da severidade cl?nica dos pacientes (r= - 0,47; p=0,01 / r = - 0,64; p= 0,001). The Preface reflects on Paul Farmer’s book as a bold and timely intervention on political working-class theatre. It places A39’s practice in the context of historical events and theatrical practice, but also in relation to a rich seam of academic enquiry on agitprop theatre, often assumed redundant beyond the end of the 1970s. It invites readers to consider the book as a provocative political analysis, and corrective to that understanding of history. It proposes the significance of returning to this territory at a time of increased class-conscious and materialist critiques from contemporary artists and theatre makers. This is especially in view of the political agency of A39’s approach; moments of which are highlighted here.

Street theatre is another core activity of A39 and has a strong influence on our developing performance style. We use the same material and attitude to develop a cabaret act. Political and satirical songs are interspersed with more avant garde performance pieces. A39’s earnings through street performances are vitally necessary. We have no money and no financial support. Funding officers see A39 as at best an inconvenient irrelevance, at worst a threat to a carefully rationalised status quo. We reject many of their assumptions, including what we perceive as the Thatcherite privileging of production values. Unable to afford a van, we must use props and set that can share Lucy’s car with us. On 3 March 1985, the great Miners’ Strike ends and the miners go back to work without a deal. The winter has been hard. Soon the pit closures will begin, and will continue till there is all but nothing left to close. A39 feels a burning need to avenge; and we carry on working towards the debut of One & All!

Our European tour is radically different to A39’s barnstorming round Cornwall. We set off in Lucy’s battered Renault 12, the four of us packed inside with our clothes, costumes, instruments, two tents and camping gear. We take the ferry from Dover to Ostend and perform hit-and-run street theatre in cities on a path leading eastwards and southwards through Belgium, Germany, and Austria towards the Iron Curtain where western capitalism confronts Eastern Bloc. Each night we camp in the Rastplätze of the Autobahns. The nominal terminus on our outward journey is Budapest in Hungary, not because we have any illusions about the nature of the Soviet satellite system, but because we want to see it for ourselves. We learn a great deal about performance, about creativity and about A39. Besides performing in Budapest, we take the opportunity of secure accommodation to create new material before setting back on the road. Once more we pay our way through street performances to return to Cornwall to work on a new touring play; an intention we find ourselves forced to postpone….

The first performance of One & All! is at the Crypt Centre in Truro at the end of March 1985 before a small audience of members and friends. Then we set out on tour to other community initiatives, local Labour groups, and anyone else who might arrange a show. We decide we need to carry our own theatre lighting, but the cost is prohibitive so we come to an ingenious if slightly dangerous arrangement. The show evolves. Political theatre and cabaret turn out to work well in Cornwall–you can say anything you liked as long as you are entertaining. An important part of A39 is its ‘hinterland’, its links to groups outside theatre. Initially this is composed of socialist and community groups, but it comes increasingly to include the Cornish cultural movement, a celebration and defence of communities, of the Cornish people’s relationships with work and with their part of the planet. These are too the causes for which the Miners’ Strike has been fought, so our commitment to this movement continues the struggle for which A39 was formed. A report for the ‘Regional Arts Association’, South West Arts (SWA), that functions as an agency of the Arts Council, dismisses A39’s work, and A39 is never to form a working relationship with SWA. Instead we participate in the Enterprise Allowance Scheme that will give us each an income and A39 prepares to go–international!

Annotation:

Premises: The measurement and assessment, with modern information tools, of some indicators related to effort programming becomes a necessity in the context of the achievement, on the international level, of some limit performances. Hypothesis: The improvement of the strike execution speed determines the obtaining of better results. Objectives: To determine the strike execution speed and to analyze the strikes specific to Karate-Do fighters, by using the Quintic information system. Subjects: Performance athletes, practitioners of Karate-Do. The selected sample (10 male subjects aged 21 to 23 years old) was made up of athletes with very good results in different national competitions. Methods: The characteristic of our research required us to use the experiment method and, within it, we used the Quintic information system, designed to measure the motion assessment and analysis. The Quintic system main components are the personal computer (with a Quintic-4 Biomechanics software) and the digital video camcorder. Results: We recorded the initial and final execution speed and, subsequently, we statistically analyzed the main strikes used in Karate-Do. Through the records and, respectively, the statistical analysis of the main strikes used in Karate-Do, we managed to emphasize (among others) the following aspects: initial testing/final testing: mean for the Kizami Tsuki lunging punch: 6.24 m/s; 6.83 m/s; mean for the Gyaku Tsuki reverse punch: 7.49 m/s; 8.23 m/s; mean for the Ura Mawashi Geri reverse roundhouse kick: 8.39 m/s; 9.17 m/s; mean for the Mawashi Geri roundhouse kick: 11.59 m/s; 12.29 m/s. Our research hypothesis checking performed with the dependent t test (for all strikes) highlights a statistically significant difference between means (P < 0.05). Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected and the research hypothesis is accepted. Conclusions: The information system implementation in the specific training determines the execution speed control, recording, measurement and assessment, which provide us accurate data about this indicator level. The comparison between the initial and the final results validated the research hypothesis and, respectively, rejected the null hypothesis.

SC-15 epoxy while the low yield strength epoxy was a TGDDM based modified system with monoamine functionalized partially reacted structure (mPRS), synthesized by collaborators at Drexel University. Compared to the baseline VARTM panel made from plain weave S-2 glass fabric with a 463 sizing and SC-15 epoxy, the penetration resistance was improved by ~25% by using a low yield strength with a high interface strength combination of 8-harness satin with mPRS. The thin laminate samples (6 mm) showed a 14% improvement in V50 when normalized by areal weight compared to a plain weave/SC-15 baseline by using plain weave/TGDDM with 20%mPRS. These two systems were combined to make an FGM panel (1.8 cm thick, 1.2 cm DoP system on strike face and 0.6 cm thin laminate on the back surface) which allowed for a 18% % increase in energy absorption capability compared to the baseline VARTM plain weave/SC-15 system on an equivalent areal density basis. This study demonstrates that the ballistic performance of GFRP can be improved through a material by design approach where constituents are varied through the thickness for maximum energy absorption.Glass fiber reinforced polymers (GFRPs) are often used in protective-structural applications due to their high specific stiffness, strength, and energy absorption. During an impact event, GFRP laminates absorb energy at multiple length scales through fiber/matrix interphase debonding, resin plasticity, fiber failure, fabric ply delamination, and overall laminate deformation. Meanwhile, the through-thickness role and energy absorption mechanism of the GFRP going through a penetration event changes from a confined punch shear/crush under hydrostatic compression on the front face to delamination and in-plane tension failure in the layers near the back face. Traditional composite panels use a single fabric/sizing and resin which are not optimized for the different energy absorption mechanisms at the different phases of impact and penetration. This indicates a potential opportunity to improve the impact performance of GFRPs by functionally grading the constituents through-thickness of the laminate to optimize the specific properties of the constituents during to improve penetration resistance. In this study, a 1.8 cm thick functionally graded (FGM) composite was designed using the depth of penetration tests to select the strike face material system and a thin laminate ballistic perforation test for the back side material selection. Two commercially available S-2 glass fabrics, an 814 g/m2 plain weave with a 463 sizing and a 302 g/m2 8-harness satin fabric with 933 sizing, were tested with low and medium yield strength epoxy resins. Military resistant architecture (MRA) is a trend to protect civilians, settlements, the environment, and existing buildings from the strikes happening during the war. The development of military technologies and armaments brings with it the need to define new urban security solutions. In this case, it is very important to analyze the physical characteristics of the building and its surrounding, such as the tectonics and physical parameters of the building�s site. To secure the buildings from new, sixth-generation warfare weapons, the architectural solution must follow certain principles according to the building material, construction system, especially composition, landscape, etc. Thus, possible building forms of the site�s physical characteristics such as platonic forms, and irregular forms expressed in the terms of the blocked, courtyard, angular and polarized types of composition are discussed in the presentation. The mentioned forms are observed by smooth, slopping, and combined placement of the terrain (See Diagram 1). The strike direction is supposed to be from the right side and above the building. The presentation includes an introduction and historical overview, threat and risk assessment, and analysis, as shown in the diagram. The situation is discussed including the above-mentioned parameters: the environment, the landscape, the shape and the shell of the building, as well as the type of the roof. As a result of the analysis, several conclusions on possible risk management, were presented.

Fatigue analysis of welded components and structures according to established codes is based upon either S-N design curves or fracture mechanics principles. Fatigue damage in nominally sound joints is commonly estimated using an appropriate S-N curve in conjunction with a linear cumulative damage rule (i.e., Miner"s rule). By comparison, fracture mechanics is used to assess the growth of an imperfection during a period of cyclic loading, or to assess whether an imperfection will remain dormant under the applied cyclic loading condition. Thus, the S-N approach is used mostly during initial design, while the fracture mechanics approach is used mostly to justify the continued operation of existing structures. As the aim of this investigation is the rationalization of certain features of API-1104, an initial design code, the S-N approach was used here. The work described in this report was aimed at determining the effect of root imperfections allowed by API 1104 on the fatigue properties of girth welds, and to recommend a S-N curve appropriate for girth welds in pipelines. S-N curves were developed for single-sided girth welds without a backing strip using pipe strip specimens containing various sizes of incomplete root penetration and lack-of-root sidewall fusion.

Literature is reviewed for the impacts of variable natural gas composition on two-stroke lean burn pipeline compressor engines. Information gathered for these engines can be simplified for development of control algorithms in four-stroke and richer burning engines. Data shows that geospatial, geological, and transient hydraulic effects cause composition variations that adversely affect engine emissions, efficiency, rated performance, and operational safety considering auto-ignition effects. In order to compensate for these changes in composition, better engine control schemes can help meet desired performance goals. For specific gas compositions combusting at a fixed air-fuel ratio, the laminar flame speed, adiabatic flame temperature, and ignition delay relate to and allow the prediction of the mixture�s reactivity, thermal availability, and auto-ignition tendency. Predicting changes in these combustion parameters, as caused by changes in fuel composition, is essential to the success of control development for variable composition engine operation. In addition to addressing the associated combustion effects resulting from variable fuel composition, an overview of sensor technologies is presented for use in control applications.
