Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza tekstów opublikowanych przed pierwszym wydaniem książki Darwina O powstawaniu gatunków, czyli o utrzymywaniu się doskonalszych ras w walce o byt. Autorzy tych tekstów to Patrick Matthew (1831), Edward Blyth (1835) i Alfred Russel Wallace (1855). Abstract.We suggest that the LBV mechanism is an essential step to “force” massive stars (M(ZAMS) ≥ 40M⊙) to finally enter the Wolf-Rayet (W-R) domain in the Hertzsprung-Russel diagram (HRD). Just as massive supergiants showincreasingvariability as theyapproachthe Humphreys-Davidson (H-D)instability limit (horizontally in the HRD diagram), so the W-R stars showdecreasingvariability as theyrecede fromthe H-D limit (at first horizontally into the WNL domain, then, with their high mass loss rates, plunging irreversably downwards as ever hotter, smaller and fainter, strong-line W-R stars). Among the W-R stars, the luminous WNL subtypes (especially WN8) are the most variable, probably as a consequence of blob ejection in the wind. The underlying mechanism which triggers this ejection is possibly related to wind instabilities and may thus be quite different from the source of variability in luminous supergiants or LBV’s in quiescence, where photospheric effects dominate.

Wallace became a full-time naturalist in 1848, the year when he and Bates set out on their journey to South America. Wallace was twenty-five at the time and over half of his life had been spent in various parts of Wales, the land of his birth. Commentators have tended to gloss over or ignore any formative influences from this early period of his life or even to dismiss them as non-existent. This is surprising as it was during the eight or so years in Wales leading up to 1848 that Wallace's interest in natural history emerged. ‘The importance of this early period in Wallace's life can scarcely be over-emphasized’ wrote Durant in his account of the development of the Wallace personality, but he omitted any specific reference to the significance of the early period in Wales. Those seeking a simple unitary cause for Wallace's conversion to natural history usually locate this in his visit to Leicester in 1844 and his meeting there with H. W. Bates. ‘The odyssey began … in 1844, in Leicester’ wrote Brooks, adding that ‘the more remote parts of … southern Wales had offered little reading material…’ This, and similar claims, are presumably founded primarily on Wallace's belief—expressed sixty years later—that it was at Leicester that he first familiarized himself with Malthus' Essay on the Principles of Population and Humboldt's Personal Narrative of Travels in South America. There is, however, evidence that Wallace was probably familiar with at least one of these books some time before his visit to Leicester and that it was during his period in southern Wales that his interest in natural history emerged and developed.

Annotation:

An Analysis of Plot in James W. Ellison “Akeelah and the Bee”. Thesis English Program of STKIP Muhammadiyah Sorong. The object of the analysis is Plot in the novel Akeelah and the Bee, the plot is taken as data, classified into the kind of plot and analyzed using descriptive analysis method. The purpose of this research is to know the kind of plot in Akeelah and the Bee novel. The result of this research show that in Akeelah and the Bee novel using (Flashback Plot because containing the elements are; Conflict, Exposition I, Exposition II, Exposition III, Exposition IV, Climax I, Climax II and End). And the writer analyze based on the theory of Russel and Freytag. The result of this research can give useful addition information for lecturers, especially in teaching literature about intrinsic element of story. For the students, the result of this research can be used as additional knowledge to improve their knowledge and ability of the literature, especially in plots of story.

Perception of Poles and immigrants’ well-being in the opinions of women from the former Soviet countries: selected aspects In our meetings with representatives of other cultures, we look at each other, compare our experiences, create some ideas about the culture of a given country. The research goal is to explore images of Poles in the experience of immigrant women from post-Soviet countries, as well as to understand the subjective sense of their well-being in the situation of migration. The basis of the analysis are data from long observation of social media, scientific publications, reports, blogs. I pay special attention to the view of Belarusian women living in Poland, also because of the small number of thematic scientific publications from the perspective of this social group. The characteristics of Poles that immigrants from Belarus, Ukraine and Russia consider to be typical are presented. My inspiration comes from cultural theories in the sociology of emotions, namely the category of emotional culture and gender ideology by Arlie Russel Hochschild are used.

Hybrid clover (Trifolium hybridum L.) is one of the main legumes for meadow grass mixtures. One of the important research methods is the assessment of the plasticity and variance of its stability of variety samples, which was carried out according to the method S. A. Eberhart, W. A. Russel, V. Z. Pakudina and L. M. Lopatina. An assessment of the adaptive potential of new samples of clover hybrid selection of the Institute of agriculture of the Carpathian region NAAS was carried out. The results of a study of 26 samples of hybrid clover in terms of ecological parameters of plasticity and stability under the influence of environmental changes are presented. Revealed valuable genetic sources with high rates of basic traits.

Twenty-seven germplasm lines of Chenopodium spp. were grown in four environments and evaluated for genotype × environment interactions and comparisons between 4 stability parameters viz. Eberhart and Russel’s δ<sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup>, Shukla’s s<sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup>, Wricke’s W <sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup> and Tai’s ë<sub>i</sub> were made. Highly significant variance due to environment + (G × E) interaction indicated that genotypes interacted differentially with environments. Shukla’s and Wricke’s methods gave more or less the same results while large differences occurred between Shukla’s and Tai’s methods. s<sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup> and W<sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup> exhibited the highest correlation (0.9999**) between themselves. Two diploid and two hexaploid lines, viz. C. album cv. Siliguri, C. album cv. Chandanbathua, C. album PRC 9803 and C. giganteum PI596371, were found to be stable and high yielding.

There have been presented study results of the spring durum wheat varieties grown in the southern forest-steppe area of the Omsk region on kernel hardness. The objects of research were the varieties of ecological variety testing conducted by various Russian and Ukrainian scientific institutions. The study was conducted in the period from 2003–2015. Experimental plots of 10 m2 were placed in 4 sequences. The varieties were sown in weedfree fallow. The soil of the experimental plot was weakly leached blackearth (chernozem), medium humus (6.2%), and loamy. The sowing date is 14–15 of May, the sowing rate is 4.5 million of germinated kernels per ha. The average hardness index in 2003–2015 was 70.1%. The varieties varied from 66.0 (the variety “Svetlana”) to 74.6% (the variety “Saratovskaya zolotistaya”). The differences between maximum and minimum were 8.6%. The variation through the years was from 51% to 92%, from 21% (the varieties “Angel”, “Omsky korund”) to 34% (the variety “Saratovskaya zolotistaya”). The calculated coefficient of variation showed that the variability degree ranged from little to medium. Coefficients of variation varied from 9.3% (the variety “Angel”) to 14.3% (the variety “Bezenchukskaya 182”). According to S. A. Eberhart, W. A. Russel the stability index indicates a lower variability of the varieties “Angel”, “Omsky korund”, “Altayskaya niva”, “Nik”, “Kharkovskaya 23”, “Tavolga”. The value of the regression coefficient (bi) for kernel hardness ranged from 0.77 to 1.23. The varieties “Voronezhskaya 9”, “Elizavetinskaya”, “Altayskaya niva”, “Omskaya stepnaya” and “Bezenchukskaya stepnaya” turned to be most responsive to the conditions (according to the Eberhart – Russell test). The varieties “Angel”, “Aleyskaya”, “Zarnitsa Altaya” had a weak reaction to the environmental conditions. There has been identified phenotypic correlation between the trait and productivity, 1000-kernel weight, nature weight, gluten quality, pasta color. The correlation between these traits is positive, on average r = 0.30–0.440.

Where does occultism fit on the map of modernity? Frank Miller Turner proposed an intriguing answer in his 1974 study Between Science and Religion: The Reaction to Scientific Naturalism in Late Victorian England. The book examined the lives and struggles of six Victorian men: the philosophers Henry Sidgwick and James Ward, the scientists Alfred Russel Wallace and George John Romanes, and the writers Frederic W. H. Myers and Samuel Butler. Of the six, three cultivated a serious and sustained interest in the occult. Sidgwick and Myers engaged in psychical research, while Wallace immersed himself in phrenology and spiritualism. Raised as Christians, all of them came to find Christian belief inadequate. Yet the scientific naturalism that might have provided an alternative pole for their allegiance, that was the alternative pole of allegiance for much of their generation, failed to entice them. All had ethical qualms about its refusal to comment on God's existence or on life after death. All, too, wondered about the soul and bemoaned the reluctance of scientists to investigate the immaterial and subjective aspects of human nature. Caught between the Christianity of their upbringing and the scientific naturalism of their adulthood, Turner argued, these men “came to dwell between the science that beckoned them and the religion they had forsaken.”

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kesepian dan pengungkapan diri online dengan kecanduan internet pada remaja akhir. Variabel tergantung pada penelitian ini adalah kecanduan internet, variabel bebas penelitian ini adalah kesepian dan pengungkapan diri online. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dan analisis dilakukan pada 100 remaja akhir. Metode pengambilan data dilakukan menggunakan tiga skala diantaranya skala kecanduan internet, skala kesepian, dan skala pengungkapan diri online. Skala kecanduan internet merupakan adaptasi dari Young�s Internet Addiction Test (TIAT20) yang dikembangkan oleh Kimberly Young, skala terdiri antara 20 aitem. Skala kesepian merupakan adaptasi dari UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) yang dikembangkan oleh Daniel W. Russel terdiri dari 20 aitem. Sedangkan skala pengungkapan diri dari online Revised Self-disclosure Scale yang dikembangkan Louis Leung yang kemudian diadaptasi oleh Ina Blau terdiri dari 9 aitem. Uji hipotesis pertama dalam penelitian ini menggunakan korelasi regresi ganda sedangkan untuk hipotesis kedua dan ketiga menggunakan analisis regresi parsial. Hasil uji hipotesis menunjukkan adanya hubungan positif yang signifikan dengan nilai korelasi R = 0,305 dengan Flinier = 4,963 dengan signifikansi 0,009 (dengan p<0,05). Analisis hipotesis kedua menunjukkan skor rx1y= 0,126 dengan p = 0,213 (dengan p> 0,05) yang menunjukkan bahawa tidak ada hubungan antara kesepian terhadap kecanduan internet. Analisis hipotesis` ketiga menunjukkan skor rx2y = 0,261 dengan p = 0,005 (dengan p=<0,01). Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ada hubungan positif yang signifikan antara pengungkapan diri online dengan kecanduan internet.

Rev. 78: 189–225, 1998. — The diverse physiological actions of dopamine are mediated by at least five distinct G protein-coupled receptor subtypes. Two D1-like receptor subtypes (D1 and D5) couple to the G protein Gs and activate adenylyl cyclase. The other receptor subtypes belong to the D2-like subfamily (D2 , D3 , and D4) and are prototypic of G protein-coupled receptors that inhibit adenylyl cyclase and activate K+ channels. The genes for the D1 and D5 receptors are intronless, but pseudogenes of the D5 exist. The D2 and D3 receptors vary in certain tissues and species as a result of alternative splicing, and the human D4 receptor gene exhibits extensive polymorphic variation. In the central nervous system, dopamine receptors are widely expressed because they are involved in the control of locomotion, cognition, emotion, and affect as well as neuroendocrine secretion. In the periphery, dopamine receptors are present more prominently in kidney, vasculature, and pituitary, where they affect mainly sodium homeostasis, vascular tone, and hormone secretion. Numerous genetic linkage analysis studies have failed so far to reveal unequivocal evidence for the involvement of one of these receptors in the etiology of various central nervous system disorders. However, targeted deletion of several of these dopamine receptor genes in mice should provide valuable information about their physiological functions.

This essay begins by asserting the importance of Joanna Russ as an American writer of the second half of the twentieth century. Her feminist concerns and her stylistic bravura are examined, as are the ways in which she deals with the socioeconomic construction of power in orde r to transcend any uncritical biological essentialism. The second half of the essay considers the context of two phrases that occur in D. W. Griffith's film Intolerance and also in Russ's writing: “hill girl” and “the female man” (The Female Man is the title of one of Russ's novels). The possibility that Griffith's film is Russ's textual source for these phrases is considered.

BSHS members might be interested to learn that an organization named the ‘A. R. Wallace Memorial Fund’ has recently been established in order to restore and protect the hitherto neglected grave of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913), one of the greatest tropical naturalists of the nineteenth century. Wallace is best known as being the co-originator, with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution by natural selection, and for his book The Malay Archipelago, which is regarded as one of the most important of all Victorian travel works.Wallace is buried together with his wife Annie in Broadstone Cemetery, Dorset. The grave is marked by an unusual and striking monument: a seven-foot tall fossilised conifer trunk from the Portland beds mounted on a large cubic base of Purbeck stone. Unfortunately, the monument has not been properly maintained for many years and it is now in poor condition. Furthermore, the lease on the grave has only fourteen years left to run before it expires, after which there is a danger that the plot could be used for another burial.The primary aims of the Wallace Memorial Fund are to restore the monument, apply for it to be officially listed by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and to extend the lease on the plot. A. R. Wallace's grandson Mr Richard Wallace (who is the treasurer of the Fund) plans to transfer the lease to the Linnean Society of London once the restoration work has been completed. This will ensure the grave's long-term protection.A secondary aim of our project is to commission English Heritage to produce a commemorative ceramic plaque and install it on ‘The Dell’ (Grays, Essex), where Wallace lived from 1872 to 1876. This is the only surviving one of three houses which Wallace built (it is currently a convent) and he wrote his important book The Geographical Distribution of Animals there. It is also notable in being one of the first houses in Britain to have been constructed of concrete.The total cost of the project will be approximately £4955. Artykuł jest próbą konceptualizacji modelu użyteczności metod doboru zawodowego Taylora‑Russela w zakresie dostosowania go do warunków pomiaru kapitału ludzkiego. Na podstawie założeń metodycznych modelu TR dokonuje się analizy zastosowania technik portfelowych w sprawozdawczości kapitału ludzkiego. Główną osią koncepcyjną jest transpozycja i zamiana kryteriów predykcyjnych w oryginalnym modelu na kryteria porządkujące podejmowanie decyzji personalnych. W konsekwencji przyjęto założenie, iż wartość kapitału ludzkiego jest zatem funkcją użyteczności realizacji odpowiednich procesów i programów zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi. Decyzja personalna, która okazuje się być trafioną (optymalną) ze względu na podjęte cele oraz środki, którymi organizacja dysponuje, uwarunkowana jest dwoma wymiarami: procesem decyzyjnym oraz wartością kapitału ludzkiego, w stosunku do którego podejmuje się decyzje.

W swojej przełomowej pracy „Denotowanie” Bertrand Russell wprowadza rozróżnienie pomiędzy prymarnym i sekundarnym użyciem zwrotów denotujących. Rozróżnienie umożliwia opis wieloznaczności niektórych zdań zawierających zwroty denotujące. Jak zauważył Saul Kripke, chociaż rozróżnienie Russella wydaje się być dychotomiczne, niektóre wieloznaczne zdania zawierające zwroty denotujące można interpretować na więcej niż tylko dwa sposoby. W niniejszym artykule argumentuję, że istnieją jeszcze inne możliwe interpretacje, niewzmiankowane ani przez Russella, ani Kripkego. Ponadto pokazuję, że te inne możliwe interpretacje różnią się również od tzw. odczytań Fodor.

Whether as a unionist, or as an independent, T W Russell was never taken lightly by the parliamentary representatives of late Victorian unionism: directly, and obliquely, his contribution to the evolution of their movement was immense. As a popular unionist missionary in Britain between the first two home-rule bills, and as a protégé of Joseph Chamberlain, Russell was a valuable medium of communication between the British and Irish unionist parties. Moreover, he was both a champion of unionist farmer demands and a loyalist member of parliament; so Russell also created a vital bond between Irish unionism and rural opinion. As a member of the parliamentary Ulster party, Russell worked unstintingly for its success, provoking flexibility among both the more obtuse landed elements in the commons and among radical farmers in the counties. Yet, when he left unionism, his influence (now indirect) remained. Confronted by the spectre of presbyterian farmer militancy led by Russell, Irish unionist members of parliament meekly tailored their public pledges; and when, between 1900 and 1902, his agitation peaked, these members went further, revising the structure of their party in order to deflate his criticism and restore old loyalties. As one of the most significant forces in moulding twentieth-century unionism from nineteenth-century toryism, Russell merits special attention: his relationship with the unionist leadership in the strategically crucial years between 1894 and 1906 is examined here at length.

Russet symptoms of unknown etiology are sporadically observed on snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) pods in New York and Maryland. Symptoms can render the whole crop unmarketable, and seem to appear when heavy rainfall occurs around harvest time. In 2000 and 2004, a microorganism not previously encountered was isolated from russet lesions on snap bean pods from commercial fields in Maryland and New York. Typical russet symptoms were produced on snap bean pods of cv. Brio after inoculation with spores of the isolates. Koch's postulates were also fulfilled. The organism was identified as Plectosporium tabacinum (Van Beyma) M.E. Palm, W. Gams & Nirenberg. A continuous 48-h leaf wetness duration at 23 to 27°C was essential for rapid symptom development. Large (11 cm long on average) snap bean pods were more susceptible to disease than smaller (pin) pods in cvs. Brio and Gold Mine. Light mechanical damage to the pods did not enhance infection. Four isolates of P. tabacinum (three from snap bean pods, one from zucchini) were inoculated onto large pods of the snap bean cvs. Brio, Gold Mine, and Hercules. All four isolates induced a russet on the pods, but the severity was significantly lower with the zucchini isolate.

Artykuł jest próbą zinterpretowania słynnego Wiersza (Trackless) autorstwa Andrzeja Sosnowskiego na podstawie tez filozofów języka (Frege, Searle, Russell). Wywiedzione z wiersza pojęcia śladu i tropu służą interpretacji zjawiska autotematyzmu (który – jak próbuje wskazać autorka – ma strukturę tropiczną). Wskazane problemy (trop, ślad, autotematyzm, filozofia języka) zostają omówione w świetle kategorii opisu, który ujmowany jest jako: 1) podstawowy sposób ujmowania „braku” i „straty”, pojęć istotnych dla projektu poetyckiego omawianego autora; 2) istotna składowa utworu autotematycznego, który – zgodnie z tezami Jonathana Cullera – dzieli się na warstwę opisywaną i opisującą; 3) fundamentalny sposób poznania, zwłaszcza w obliczu suponowanych przez filozofię języka niejasności wiązanych z kategorią nazwy.

Abstract The paper presents the results of research on the spatial variation of oxygen condition in a carp pond. The analysis of dissolved oxygen was carried out in the summer in 29 measuring points. In the analysed months the differences were determined between dissolved oxygen concentration in the strip of rushes and the part of the pond free from macrophytes. In the strip of rushes, the average concentration of dissolved oxygen was between 4.69-6.49 mg O2·dm-3. In the part of pond located near the strip of rushes the oxygen concentration was between 6.23-7.91 mg O2·dm-3 and in open water concentration of dissolved oxygen was in range 7.60-9.09 mg O2·dm-3. It was found that the biggest differences in oxygen concentration occur between the strip of rushes and the open water column: 40% in June, 26% in July, 28% in August, 38% in September, respectively. In the south-western part of the pond, covered with macrophytes and shaded by trees, the worst oxygen conditions were observed - below the optimum level for carps, sometimes reaching lethal values. The best oxygen conditions, noted in July and August, were in the central and northern part of the pond including the fishery and feeding point. In order to improve the oxygen conditions in macrophytes zone it is recommended to remove the rushes periodically and to remember to leave the part of emergent plants that are necessary for breeding and living avifauna. The scope and timing of the removal of plants has to be consulted and co-ordinated with the Regional Conservator of Nature.

Certain commentators on Russell’s “no class” theory, in which apparent reference to classes or sets is eliminated using higher-order quantification, including W. V. Quine and (recently) Scott Soames, have doubted its success, noting the obscurity of Russell’s understanding of so-called “propositional functions.” These critics allege that realist readings of propositional functions fail to avoid commitment to classes or sets (or something equally problematic), and that nominalist readings fail to meet the demands placed on classes by mathematics. I show that Russell did thoroughly explore these issues, and had good reasons for rejecting accounts of propositional functions as extralinguistic entities. I argue in favor of a reading taking propositional functions to be nothing over and above open formulas which addresses many such worries, and in particular, does not interpret Russell as reducing classes to language.

Bochvar Institute) as a structural material for use in the active zones of fast neutron reactors, as well as in thermonuclear and hybrid reactors. The team of authors has been studying various aspects of hydrogen interaction with Rusfer steel for a number of years, primarily retention, diffusion, and the effect of various damages on capture. The paper summarizes the results of the research performed by the authors.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, land purchase in Ireland conducted in compliance with the land-purchase acts passed by the British government between 1881 and 1896 had ground to a virtual standstill. The numbers within the landlord class who wished to sell had been exhausted, yet tenants were anxious for a comprehensive land-purchase measure. The Wyndham Land Act was introduced in the House of Commons on 25 March 1903. The act – the pinnacle of George Wyndham's term of office as chief secretary of Ireland – was hailed as one of the most important pieces of social legislation since the Act of Union.
