Lipids are important food nutrients and they also carry out other functions such as to be carriers of aromatic substances or to influence food texture, for example. However, polyunsaturated acids are also easily oxidised. In fact, oxidative rancidity of edible oils is a serious problem in the food industry. As an alternative to the use of synthetic antioxidants, the generation of endogenous antioxidants by carbonyl-amine reactions can be employed to increase food stability. These reactions are widely accepted to be produced as a consequence of Maillard reactions between carbohydrates and amino compounds. However, the contribution of lipid-derived carbonyl compounds to these reactions is much lesser known. This review discusses the role of lipid-derived antioxidants by analysing how they are formed and their antioxidative action.

Soil properties of forest ecosystems depend on synergy of both parent material and organisms living in the soil, i.e. tree species communities including related plant and animal species. However these soils were not left intact being converted into agricultural land; addition of both nutrients and organic matter and cultivation using tillage led to increased fertility of topsoil. Even long-term afforested soils show differences which are considered as legacy of past agriculture. The change remains detectable for decades; though the altered properties are obvious especially couple of years after planting (approximately 10 years). We found increased concentrations of nutrients (P, K, Ca, and Mg) and subsequent increased base saturation (V %) in former tilled soil only. Moreover, there were no differences between topsoil and subsoil properties (69% and 72%, respectively). In addition to significantly lower saturation (both 0–10 cm and 11–30 cm layers) detected in the long-term-forest and 50-year-afforested (both covered with Norway spruce stands) soils in comparison with adjacent 10-year-old afforestations, there was found significantly lower base saturation in topsoil horizons compared to underlying ones.

Analyses compared hallucinatory experiences with and without subjective distress at baseline for risk of delusion formation at follow-up.ResultsIndividuals experiencing hallucinations with distress, compared with those without distress had a fourfold increased risk of subsequent delusion formation.ConclusionsThis finding corroborates the hypothesis that distress associated with early perceptual intrusions serves as a catalyst in the development of delusions.

Many elements of foreign languages have been incorporated into Chinese throughout its long history. However, the issue of borrowing from a foreign language in Chinese is of great interest. The study of this problem, along with the theoretical, is of great practical importance. Ignorance of the methods of borrowing foreign vocabulary, its features and structure, the inability to distinguish sound borrowing from words of Chinese origin quite often confuses the translator and leads to semantic errors. Borrowing vocabulary can occur verbally (phonetic) and written (semantic). Loans in Chinese can be of four types: phonetic; semantic; semi-semantic, semi-phonetic; hybrid type, where elements of both languages are present. This article discusses the types of phonetic borrowing and their role in the formation of medical terminology in the Chinese language.

AbstractMagnetic fields are a key component in star formation theories. Nevertheless, their exact role in the formation of stars is still a matter of debate. The process of angular momentum transportation by the disturbance caused during magnetic field reconnection still needs theoretical formulation in terms of the collapsing cloud’s parameters. The purposes of this study are: to model the critical mass of a magnetized, gravitating and turbulent star forming molecular cloud (MC) and to formulate the momentum carried out by a magnetic field through magnetic field reconnection in terms of the MC’s parameters. By applying theoretical modeling, we show how angular momentum transported via an Alfvén wave can be described in terms of mass, radius and dispersion velocity of a collapsing cloud core and a model equation of the critical mass for a gravitating, turbulent, and magnetized molecular cloud core. The outflow of angular momentum by magnetic fields facilitates the inflow of mass. On the other side, magnetic pressure prevents collapse. Therefore, magnetic fields have a dual purpose in the process of star formation. This momentum outflow triggers the inflow of mass to conserve angular momentum. The results show that Alfvén waves are like a machine that extracts angular momentum from a magnetized collapsing cloud core. Thus the total angular momentum transported by magnetic field at a distance R from the core’s center depends on the size, mass and turbulent velocity dispersion of the collapsing cloud core.

AbstractWe discuss evidence that quasars, and more generally radio jets, may have played an active role in the formation stage of galaxies by inducing star formation, i.e., through positive feedback. This mechanism first proposed in the 1970s has been considered as anecdotal until now, contrary to the opposite effect that is generally put forward, i.e., the quenching of star formation in massive galaxies to explain the galaxy bimodality, downsizing, and the universal black hole mass over bulge stellar mass ratio. This suggestion is based on the recent discovery of an ultra-luminous infrared galaxy, i.e., an extreme starburst, that appears to be triggered by a radio jet from the QSO HE 0450-2958 at z = 0.2863, together with the finding in several systems of a positional offset between molecular gas and quasars, which may be explained by the positive feedback effect of radio jets on their local environment.

AbstractI describe two recent projects to test star formation theory using Zeeman observations. First, using Bayesian analysis, the probability distribution function of the magnitude of the total magnetic field strength Bt and its dependence on volume density n(H) were inferred from Zeeman observations of the line-of-sight strengths Bz. The result was that from one molecular cloud to another Bt ranges uniformly between values close to zero and a maximum B0, and that B0 scales as n2/3. Second, observations of the ratio of the mass/flux (M/Φ) between the core and envelope regions of four dark clouds yielded values < 1. All of these results disagree with predictions of the strong magnetic field, ambipolar diffusion driven theory of star formation.

IntroductionTreatment of hemorrhages in patients with inherited severe hemophilia A is dependent on transfusion replacement therapy with either plasma-derived or recombinant factor VIII concentrates.1 Hemorrhages become very difficult to treat after inhibitors develop, resulting in significant decreases in qualityof- life and life expectancy.2-6 Strategies to treat hemorrhages in the face of an inhibitor include the use of “bypass” therapy with activated and nonactivated prothrombin complex concentrates, high-dose factor VIII, porcine factor VIII, and recombinant factor VIIa. None of these is as effective as treatment of the noninhibitor patient with factor VIII.2,6 Therefore, several strategies to induce tolerance to factor VIII administration have been attempted, including administration of daily high-dose intravenous infusions of factor VIII concentrate alone, or in combination with, immune-modulating therapy.2,6 These strategies are extraordinarily difficult and expensive and are frequently unsuccessful, particularly when the inhibitor is well established. Thus, the ability to predict which patients are at risk for inhibitor development and to identify factors that predispose to inhibitor development would allow investigation of therapies targeted to prevent the establishment of the inhibitor response or to provide the ability to initiate early and, thus, more effective, immune tolerance induction for those at risk.
