Gerhard Rohlfs was born in Vegesack near Bremen in 1831. He was a frequent traveler in Africa, and in 1865-67 he became the first European to travel from north Africa across the Sahara to the west African coast, from Tripoli to Borno, then through Bauchi and Keffi to Loko, thence down the Benue to its confluence with the Niger at Lokoja, which he reached on 28 March 1867. From there, he proceeded upstream along the Niger to Raba, delivering presents to Masaba of Nupe. From Raba, he traveled overland through Yorubaland to Lagos. In 1868 he published an account of the first half of this journey, from north Africa to Borno, in Petermann's Mitteilungen. In 1872 his account of the second half, “Gerhard Rohlfs' Reise durch Nord-Afrika vom Mittelländischen Meere bis zum Busen von Guinea, 1865 bis 1867, 2. Hälfte: von Kuka nach Lagos (Bornu, Bautschi, Saria, Nupe, Yoruba),” also appeared in Petermann's. A later publication, Quer durch Afrika, which appeared in 1874-75, covered the entire journey.Rohlfs' accounts of his travels in west Africa south of the Sahara have up to now been greatly neglected. The works mentioned above have never been published in English translation, which no doubt goes some way to explain this neglect. Rohlfs' information on his stay in Kuka (the capital of Borno) and his visits to Bauchi and Nupe have been cited by some scholars, at least. Very few, however, appear to have consulted his description of the last leg of his 1866-67 journey, in which he proceeded from the Niger south through Yorubaland to Lagos, visiting Share, Ilorin, Iwo, Ibadan, and parts of Ijebuland on the way.

AbstractWe are concerned with a unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebra A satisfying UCT with a Rohlin flow, as a continuation of [12]. Our first result (which is independent of the Rohlin flow) is to characterize when two central projections in A are equivalent by a central partial isometry. Our second result shows that the K-theory of the central sequence algebra A′ ∩ Aω (for an ω ∈ βN\N) and its fixed point algebra under the flow are the same (incorporating the previous result). We will also complete and supplement the characterization result of the Rohlin property for flows stated in [12].

Avian diversity of Tilyar Lake (28.883–28.879 0N & 76.637 –76.634 0E) located on the eastern outskirts of Rohtak, Haryana was conducted from May 2017 to April 2018. A total of 73 avian species belonging to 62 genera and 31 families under 15 orders was observed. Order Passeriformes with 21 species in 12 families dominated the avifauna whereas orders Bucerotiformes, Podicipediformes, and Psittaciformes were poorly represented with a single species each. Family Anatidae was the most dominant representing 13.89% (n=10) of the total species recorded. Among the reported species 75% (n=54) were resident while 25% (n=18) were migrant. Common Pochard Aythya ferina assessed globally as Vulnerable, while Painted Stork Mycteria leucocephala, Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster and Black-headed Ibis Threskiornis melanocephalus are assessed as Near Threatened, whereas the rest of the species were in the Least Concern category of the IUCN Red List 2019. The omnivorous feeding habit was shown by the maximum number of species while frugivorous and granivorous bird species were in the least numbers. The rich avifaunal diversity of the Tilyar Lake confirms it as a suitable habitat for both resident and migrant bird species. Therefore, the present study suggests the need for incorporation of appropriate protective measures for conservation of the avian heritage of Tilyar Lake, Rohtak.

O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em realizar, a partir do modelo de Rohfls, uma análise micro e mesoeconômica das redes eletrônicas e da internet. Em função da complexificação dos Sistemas de Informação e Comunicação (SIC) , acrescentarei as variáveis que correspondem a essas evoluções, e analisarei as novas formas concorrenciais que caracterizam esses mercados. A este respeito, proporei uma tipologia dos diferentes mercados, e mostrarei porque os mercados nos quais se exerce uma concorrência qualitativa são os mais concorrenciais. Em uma primeira parte, apresentarei o modelo de Rohlfs (1974), mostrarei em que medida a complexificação do SIC se traduz por novas modalidades de concorrência, e ressaltarei os limites explicativos deste modelo diante dessas evoluções. Numa segunda parte, acrescentarei uma série de variáveis ao modelo original de Rohlfs, e construirei assim uma tipologia das diferentes formas de concorrência e das estruturas de mercado.

Background: Refractive errors are the commonest cause of visual impairment in school children worldwide. They can be easily corrected by a pair of spectacles, only when they are used regularly. The purpose of present study is to document the actual rate of spectacle wear at the time of examination, assess principle determinants of spectacle wear and reasons for non-compliance among different demographic groups.Methods: 200 school children in the age group of 6-15 years with refractive errors were selected. The schools were visited without prior intimation to the students 3 months after the initial examination. Reasons for spectacle wear non-compliance were enquired.Results: 78 (39.0%) children out of 200 were compliant to spectacle wear, while 122 (61.0%) were non-compliant to spectacle wear. Main reason for not wearing spectacles was ‘teased about the appearance with spectacles’.Conclusions: School teachers should explain the risk of non-wearing of spectacles and benefits of spectacle wearing to both children and their parents. Most of the children were not compliant because they were teased about, did not like, or were not comfortable in their spectacles- all societal issues that could and should be addressed.

Background: Breastfeeding practice is known to play an important role in reducing child mortality and morbidity. The primary objective was to assess the breastfeeding practices in Rohtak and the secondary objective was to compare the breastfeeding practices in the rural and urban areas of Rohtak.Methods: This descriptive type of community based cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted in rural and urban field practice areas attached to Department of Community Medicine, Pt. B. D. Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak. 500 Lactating mothers of 6-11 months old children were included in the study and data was collected using the pre-tested questionnaire on breastfeeding practices.Results: In our study, early breastfeeding rate was 32.2%, exclusive breastfeeding rate was 23.4%, bottle feeding rate was 35.4% and timely complementary feeding rate was 63.2%.Conclusions: Counselling sessions with the aim to promote breastfeeding are needed. Mothers as well as other family members should particularly be educated about the importance of early initiation of breastfeeding and to prolong exclusive breastfeeding.

Fungal spores are known as one of the important bioparticles causing allergic manifestation in human beings. Hence, knowledge of season and prevalence of the airborne allergens to which the patients are exposed is a prerequisite for proper diagnosis and treatment of allergic disorders in hypersensitive individuals. Keeping this in view, aerial survey was performed in the atmosphere of Rohtak city for 2 consecutive years (March 2008-February 2010), using a volumetric petri plate sampler. A total of 45 fungal spore types were recorded during the survey period. In the present study, February-April and July-November were identified as the peak seasons for Rohtak city. Cladosporium was the main contributor to the total fungal load with 25.14% followed by Alternaria (18.05%), Aspergillus niger (7.66%), Curvularia (5.31%), and Epicoccum (5.29%). Fifteen dominant viable fungal spore types were represented in the form of a fungal calendar. An attempt has also been made to assess the allergenicity of some of the fungal types recorded from the atmosphere of Rohtak city. The magnitude of variations observed in markedly positive skin reactions (2+ and above) varied from 17.3 to 2.3%. Penicillium oxalicum showed a markedly positive reaction in maximum number of patients (26; 17.3%) followed by Rhizopus nigricans (23; 15.3%). ELISA was performed with the sera of patients showing markedly positive skin reactions and the sera were classified into four groups based on percent binding. The majority of the sera showed 0–15% binding to different antigenic extracts, while sera showing >60% binding were least in number. Greater than 30% binding was observed against antigens of Rhizopus nigricans, Epicoccum purpurascens, Penicillium oxalicum, Curvularia lunata, Aspergillus flavus, Candida albicans and Neurospora sitophila. The concordance between positive skin reaction and serum-specific IgE antibodies ranged from 16.7 to 69.2%.

Bratteli–Vershik systems have been widely studied. In the context of general zero-dimensional systems, Bratteli–Vershik systems are homeomorphisms that have Kakutani–Rohlin refinements. Bratteli diagrams are well suited to analyzing such systems. Besides this approach, general graph covers can be used to represent any zero-dimensional system. Indeed, all zero-dimensional systems can be described as certain kinds of sequences of graph covers that may not be brought about by Kakutani–Rohlin partitions. In this paper, we follow the context of general graph covers to analyze the relations between ergodic measures and circuits of graph covers. First, we formalize the condition for a sequence of graph covers to represent minimal Cantor systems. In constructing invariant measures, we deal with general compact metrizable zero-dimensional systems. In the context of Bratteli diagrams with finite rank, it has previously been mentioned that all ergodic measures should be limits of some combinations of towers of Kakutani–Rohlin refinements. We demonstrate this for the general zero-dimensional case, and develop a theorem that expresses the coincidence of the time average and the space average for ergodic measures. Additionally, we formulate a theorem that signifies the old relation between uniform convergence and unique ergodicity in the context of graph circuits for general zero-dimensional systems. Unlike previous studies, in our case of general graph covers there arises the possibility of the linear dependence of circuits. We give a condition for a full circuit system to be linearly independent. Previous research also showed that the bounded combinatorics imply unique ergodicity. We present a lemma that enables us to consider unbounded ranks of winding matrices. Finally, we present examples that are linked with a set of simple Bratteli diagrams having the equal path number property.

Let G be an inductive limit of finite cyclic groups, and A be a unital simple projectionless C*-algebra with K1(A) ≅ G and a unique tracial state, as constructed based on dimension drop algebras by Jiang and Su. First, we show that any two aperiodic elements in Aut (A)/ WInn (A) are conjugate, where WInn (A) means the subgroup of Aut (A) consisting of automorphisms which are inner in the tracial representation.In the second part of this paper, we consider a class of unital simple C*-algebras with a unique tracial state which contains the class of unital simple A𝕋-algebras of real rank zero with a unique tracial state. This class is closed under inductive limits and crossed products by actions of ℤ with the Rohlin property. Let A be a TAF-algebra in this class. We show that for any automorphism α of A there exists an automorphism ᾶ of A with the Rohlin property such that ᾶ and α are asymptotically unitarily equivalent. For the proof we use an aperiodic automorphism of the Jiang-Su algebra.

We prove a formula for the f-invariant of a Markov chain over a free group in terms of transition matrices that parallels the classical formula for the entropy a Markov chain. AbstractInspired by the classical category theorems of Halmos and Rohlin for discrete measure-preserving transformations, we prove analogous results in the abstract setting of unitary and isometric C0-semigroups on a separable Hilbert space. More precisely, we show that, for an appropriate topology, the set of all weakly stable unitary groups (isometric semigroups) is of first category, while the set of all almost weakly stable unitary groups (isometric semigroups) is residual.

The results of experimental performance tests on a 99.0 mm radial inflow turbine with seven different nozzle throat areas were reported by the same authors in a previous publication (1). In order to perform a loss analysis, dividing the turbine losses between the stator and the rotor, a theoretical model of the stator loss was required. Several stator loss models were evaluated and the model described by Rohlik (9) was used as the basis for a loss analysis. Plots are given for the breakdown of losses at two operating speeds for each nozzle size. Both the stator and the rotor losses decreased markedly as the stator throat area increased towards a stator-rotor throat area ratio of 0.5. A significant step change in the magnitude of the rotor loss was evident at every stator size and appeared to correlate with the volumetric flowrate in the turbine exducer. Therefore a transition to a more efficient flow pattern in the exducer seemed to occur at higher flow-rates.

AbstractIn recent years, some encouraging reports have appeared on assessing the degree of brain damage by estimating serum and cerebrospinal fluid enzymes such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). In our study, we included 100 patients with isolated head injury arriving at trauma center, PGIMS Rohtak within 24 hours of injury, studied levels of serum LDH on days 1, 3, and 7 of injury, and concluded that levels have diagnostic as well as prognostic significance.
