Abstract We acquired a unique ambient vibration dataset from Castleton Tower, a 120 m high bedrock monolith located near Moab, Utah, to resolve dynamic and material properties of the landform. We identified the first two resonant modes at 0.8 and 1.0 Hz, which consist of mutually perpendicular, linearly polarized horizontal ground motion at the top of the tower. Damping ratios for these modes were low at ∼1%. We successfully reproduced field data in 3D numerical eigenfrequency simulation implementing a Young’s modulus of 7 GPa, a value ∼30% lower than measured on core samples. Our analysis confirms that modal deformation at the first resonant frequencies closely resembles that of a cantilever beam. The outcome is that with basic estimates of geometry and material properties, the resonant frequencies of other freestanding rock monoliths can be estimated a priori. Such estimates are crucial to evaluate the response of rock towers to external vibration inputs.

The article deals with morphological classification of the sandstone rocks in the Ukrainian Carpathians Beskids. By the methods of field measurements and mathematical computations the rock peaks heights, their shape, basement lengths and strata thickness have been calculated. The highest rock peaks in the Beskids amounts 32–37 m. The classification from the morphological point of view on the base of rock forms studying has been done. All rocks are divided in two classes: the rocks-outliers and the rocks-outcrops. Among the rocks-outliers 4 types are defined: spire-shaped, chain-shaped, arc-shaped and combined. Spire-shaped rocks are divided into subtypes: tower, spoke and needle. Among the chain-shaped rocks 3 subtypes are defined: wall, bloc and slab. The rocks of combined form are divided into subtypes: 1) with defined form – those of the rocks which are similar to certain objects and 2) undefined forms (cliffs). Among the rocks-outcrops three types are defined: cliff-shaped, canyon-shaped and angular ones. The class of rocks-outliers occurs most often. Among the types the rocks-towers occur most often. They dominate in the rock formations of Urych, Yamelnytsia and Bubnyshche. Many bloc-shaped and plate-shaped rocks are located on the Kliuch Ridge, in Bubnys’ki Rocks, Yamelnytsia. There are rocks-walls of 50–60 m in Urych and Yamelnytsia. The longest rock-wall in Danylov tract near Yamelnytsia has been investigated. Its length is 150 m and height is 17 m. Some needle and spoke rocks are situated in Bubnys’ki Rocks (Odinets’ Rock, Golets’ Rock) and Urych (Hostryi Kamin’ (Sharp Stone) Rock. Unique types are very rare. For instance: Bronenosets’ Rock in Bubnys’ki Rocks (this rock has shape of sail), Sokil (Falcon) Rock in the Kliuch Ridge, mushroom-shaped rock in Yamelnytsia. There is also unique arc-rock in the Kliuch Ridge. In the class of rocks-outcrops the types of cliff and canyon occur equally. The angular-shaped rocks are rarer. The cliff-shaped rocks are situated near Sokolova Mountain, Pozhernytsia Mountain and Kniazhi (Princes) Rocks near Tyshivnytsia. Unique rocks-canyons, the effects of tectonic breaking and gravity-erosion processes, occur on the Kliuch Ridge. The worked out morphological classification of rocks can be used by ascertaining features of rock morphogenesis with education and scientific purposes as well as by assessment of safety level and protection possibilities. Morphological types of the rocks can be considered as valuable objects of geomorphologic heritage and attractions for geo-tourism. Key words: rocks; morphology type of the rock; rock shape; Beskids of Ukrainian Carpathians.

For difference of elevation of mountain slope, four legs of iron tower are not in the same plane. In order to reduce the excavation of the base surface and damage to the environment, several foundation types are widely used to adapt with the terrain changes, such as comprehensive unequal legs, unequal Foundation, outfitting extra legs and so on.When the tower is located in steep slope of rocky area, common foundation types in use will bring a large area of earth and rock excavation, construction difficulties, high-risk, poor basic indicators, greater damage to the environment.Consideratiing engineering practice, a new foundation type is proposed in this paper supplemented by theoretical analysis and economic analysis, which takes full advantage of the terrain and rock properties and provides a new choice for foundation design on steep slope in mountains areas.

The transmission distance of transmission lines is long, the line affected by the diversity of climate and topography of the corridors of transmission lines, differences in regional geological structure conditions, variability of rock and soil types, and the complexity of groundwater. Under the influence of extreme weather conditions (ice-covered, strong wind, etc.) and sudden geological disasters (such as mudslides, flash floods, earthquakes, etc.), catastrophic damage and basic deformation problems of the tower foundations are prone, and even tower collapse accidents occur in severe cases, which affect the safe operation of transmission lines. Monitoring the deformation of power transmission towers and surrounding grounds, it is critical to ensuring the normal operation of transmission lines by assessing and controlling potential risks in advance. In this paper, using ALOS-2 PALSAR radar satellite data, differential interferometry was used to monitor surface deformation near the Sichuan Jinsu line transmission channel. The analysis found that a significant landslide hazard was found near the transmission channel tower in Yibin-Zhaotong section of Jinsu, Sichuan Province, the cumulative deformation reaches 9cm. The results of this paper can provide new monitoring means for safety monitoring of transmission towers.

Dry hot rock power generation is an important part of geothermal energy application, and condenser has become an important part of the system because it can provide a lower outlet back pressure for steam turbine, and improve the power generation of the system. Engineering Equation Solver is applied to assess the performance of cooling towers for organic Rankine cycle power generation systems. In the present study, two models with different cooling towers are considered: In the first model, the predicted performance of the opening cooling tower for organic Rankine cycle systems is studied and compared with the experimental measurement for a 500 kW system. In the second model, because of the high mass flow of the cooling water and high energy consumption of the cooling water pump for the opening cooling tower, the predicted performance of the closed wet cooling tower to replace the opening cooling tower for organic Rankine cycle systems is studied. The models are capable of predicting the variation of evaporation and condensation temperatures, the pressure loss of heat exchangers. R123, R227ea, R245fa, R600 and R600a are tested as working fluids. The results show that the second model reduces the energy consumption of the cooling water pump, and it also improves the net power generation and net generation efficiency for using R227ea, R600, R600a. However, with the increase of the closed wet cooling tower pressure loss, both the net power generation and net generation efficiency decrease. Therefore, different working fluids are suitable for different pressure loss.

The uneven stacking of waste rock materials caused by the dynamic instability of rock spreaders cannot be ignored for geological subsidence and local collapse in reclamation areas. Based on the dynamic stability of the existing rock spreader, combined with the actual application conditions, the load conditions of the rock spreader are analyzed. The static and dynamic analysis and optimization of the key structures such as the receiving arm, the discharging arm, and the main tower are carried out by using the topology optimization method. The optimized virtual prototype of the whole machine is established to verify its rationality. The research results show that the total weight of key parts such as receiving boom, discharging boom, and the main tower is reduced by about 4.5% (4650 kg), the lower-order vibration frequencies below the fifth order of those parts are not within the resonance range, and the stability of the whole machine is greatly improved, which fundamentally solves the problem of uneven rock stacking caused by impact stability. And, the maximum stress and deflection of the whole machine under the worst working conditions meet the actual requirements. The research ideas and conclusions can provide solutions to prevent the subsidence or local collapse of reclamation areas caused by uneven stacking materials.

Remote sensing techniques are leading methodologies for landslide characterization and monitoring. However, they may be limited in highly vegetated areas and do not allow for continuously tracking the evolution to failure in an early warning perspective. Alternative or complementary methods should be designed for potentially unstable sites in these environments. The results of a six-month passive seismic monitoring experiment on a prone-to-fall quartzite tower are here presented. Ambient seismic noise and microseismicity analyses were carried out on the continuously recorded seismic traces to characterize site stability and monitor its possible irreversible and reversible modifications driven by meteorological factors, in comparison with displacement measured on site. No irreversible modifications in the measured seismic parameters (i.e., natural resonance frequencies of the tower, seismic velocity changes, rupture-related microseismic signals) were detected in the monitored period, and no permanent displacement was observed at the tower top. Results highlighted, however, a strong temperature control on these parameters and unusual preferential vibration directions with respect to the literature case studies on nearly 2D rock columns, likely due the tower geometric constraints, as confirmed by 3D numerical modeling. A clear correlation with the tower displacement rate was found in the results, supporting the suitability of passive seismic monitoring systems for site characterization and early waning purposes.

In order to fully prevent flying rocks casting to surrounding constructions in blasting demolition project, fault tree analysis was used for safety evaluation. The analysis and calculation of minimal cut sets and structure importance indicates that the highest probability of flying rock accidents is caused by large quantity of maximum priming charge. And other events come second but cannot be ignored. Thus, several measures were adopted according to the analysis result and the final blasting result showed that no flying accidents happened in the whole process.

Bear Lodge/Devils Tower National Monument, a spectacular rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, has a multiplicity of meanings, not all of which were fully acknowledged until the 1990s. It is widely known as a geologic wonder, the first national monument, a marker of local and pioneer heritage, and a premier rock climbing area. In the 1980s and ‘90s, however, the National Park Service began to acknowledge that the Tower also holds cultural and historical meaning for the Northern Plains tribes, dating back long before the colonization of the American West. Some of the tribes expressed to the Park Service that they were offended by rock climbers desecrating the Tower, a sacred site, leading the Park Service to seek to compromise between these competing uses of this public land. The controversy over climbing at Bear Lodge/Devils Tower was, and remains, a debate over history, and this thesis examines the historical foundations for the discourses of climbers, local white residents, tribal members, and the Park Service, as these various groups asserted their claims to this public space. This thesis contends that the language used by climbers and local white residents in arguing against the Park Service’s accommodation of tribal cultures and beliefs appropriated the languages of spirituality and tradition used by the tribes, and sought to delegitimize the tribal claims to the Tower. The Park Service is complicit in controlling the discourses surrounding the Tower and erasing the traditions and complex history of the Northern Plains tribal ties to this sacred place.

The land availability is not enough because mountainous and hilly area is over two-thirds in Taiwan. It is unavoidable that more and more constructions are compelled towards hills, and slope stability becomes a big issue to engineers. This research focuses on the engineering behavior of rock slope with one or two regular jointed set under tower loading. In order to understand the overall stable characteristic of the tower and slope, Three different combinations of tower loading near slope were applied. Numerical code UDEC was used to build numerical model and perform analysis in the study. The investigation focused of three different combination of tower loading on the rock slope. Important analytic issues include stress redistribution; slip dislocations of joints, tensile cracks and the development of the plastic zone. The analytical results show that the mechanical behavior of tower built in regular jointed rock slope is influenced on the tower loading, numbers of joint set within the study scope. The most critical situation happens while the tower loading consists of vertical and horizontal loading, and the parallel joint component of horizontal loading is to push down the tower. Base on the equal-stress contour, the magnitude of deformation and plastic zone of the overall slope under different progressive periods, some suggestions are proposed for remediation and monitoring of tower built in regular jointed rock slope.

We carry out non-invasive ambient noise investigation of rock structures in Bohemian Paradise (Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, Czech Republic). The study is focused on two key topics: 1) An in-situ elastic moduli estimate of competent, horizontally deposited sandstone layers. This is done by performing an ambient noise array measurement. The recording is processed with f-k array analysis, from which frequency-dependent Love and Rayleigh wave dispersion curves as well as the Rayleigh wave ellipticity are retrieved. The data are inverted for P- and S-wave velocity profiles, from which the Young's and shear modulus are successfully estimated. 2) Study of local response of Kapelník rock tower. We analyse a dataset of ambient noise recordings from the top of the tower and from its foot. Information about tower oscillation frequencies and directions, together with amplification ratios, are retrieved from particle motion polarisation analysis and from site-to-reference spectral ratios. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory is finally used to interpret the measured data using the elastic moduli estimated from the noise array measurement. Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics
The Renewal Optimization has been developed over the course of 9 months (September 2018 till June 2019) as part of the thesis for the MSc in Advanced Analytics and Data Science at the Nova Information Management School (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). The objective was to Predict the Probability of Renewing the policy of our customer. This would allow for more assertive and targeted marketing actions and decision making as well as fine tune the pricing strategy. The Training Sample is composed of data from the 1st of January 2017 till 30 June 2018 and the results presented reflect a picture of the Médis individual client portfolio from July 1st, 2018 till 31 December 2018 with 68 732 policies tested. The attributes used in the modelling process cover 6 customer dimensions: demographic, customer profile, product profile, bank variables and usage as well as interaction with the company. The final model results calculated the Renewal Probabilities of every active policy. These calculations have been divided in deciles where the first group have the lowest Renewal Probability estimated and the last one has the highest Renewal Probability estimated. To determine the factor that affects the Renewal Rate the most, a comparison has been conducted between the first and the last group (low probability and high probability groups). Next steps for the project include, but are not limited to, making the results available to all stakeholders and the monitoring plan is also discussed.

Precise and accurate species abundance and distribution data are important for making effective ecological conservation and management decisions. These data are often challenging to obtain, especially in marine environments where the logistical and technical difficulties of working underwater can limit the precision and accuracy of detection. The chosen survey methodology, along with the study design, will determine the extent to which species’ spatial or temporal variability in abundance and distribution may be investigated. Different observational methods may yield different results. I explore how the methodology used to collect sample measurements of fish abundance and diversity in marine environments can influence your understanding of the focal population and the effectiveness of spatial marine conservation measures. I compare inshore rockfish abundance and fish diversity estimates between paired towed video and baited video surveys and between dive and baited video surveys conducted on temperate rocky-reefs in the nearshore Northeast Pacific on the coast of British Columbia, Canada. I test if the baited video survey data yield equivalent insight to those data derived from the methods commonly used in shallow (dive surveys) and deeper waters (towed video surveys). Paired dive and baited video surveys took place inside and outside of spatial marine conservation areas designated for inshore rockfish called Rockfish Conservation Areas. I test whether the baited video data generate the same conclusions about Rockfish Conservation Area effectiveness as data derived from the dive surveys, and whether the Rockfish Conservation Areas have greater inshore rockfish abundance and fish diversity than paired locations outside the conservation areas. I find similar inshore rockfish abundance estimates between towed and baited video, but baited video surveys detect a greater number of unique species than the towed video surveys. The dive surveys detect greater inshore rockfish abundance and fish diversity than the baited video surveys, but the baited video data yield equivalent insight on Rockfish Conservation Area effectiveness to data derived from the dive surveys. I find little evidence that inshore rockfish recovery is influenced by Rockfish Conservation Area protection. When data were combined across all sites sampled, Rockfish Conservation Areas did not produce more inshore rockfish, bigger rockfish, or greater fish diversity than paired sites outside of Rockfish Conservation Areas, whether measured using a dive survey or a baited video survey. However, I did observe a positive effect of Rockfish Conservation Area protection for some of the individual Rockfish Conservation Areas surveyed that rated as having a high Conservation Score. This suggests certain Rockfish Conservation Areas may be effective conservation areas for inshore rockfish recovery. The differences I observe in inshore rockfish abundance and fish diversity between the paired surveys reveals the methodology used can influence species abundance and diversity estimates. Baited video surveys are a low cost and effort methodology that can be used to examine inshore rockfish abundance and fish diversity over rocky reefs from nearshore waters down to depths greater than 20 m, and to monitor the effectiveness of spatial marine conservation areas.

Predominately, robotic construction is applied as prefabrication in structured indoor environments with standard building materials. Our work, on the other hand, focuses on utilizing irregular materials found on-site, such as rubble and rocks, for autonomous construction. We present a pipeline to detect arbitrarily placed objects in a scene and form a structure out of the detected objects. The next best stacking pose is selected using a searching method employing gradient descent with random initial orientations, exploiting a physics engine. This approach is validated in an experimental setup using a robotic manipulator by constructing balancing vertical stacks without mortars and adhesives. We show the results of eleven consecutive trials to form such towers autonomously using four arbitrarily in front of the robot placed rocks.

In evaluating ultimate limit states for design, time-domain aeroelastic response simulations are typically carried out to establish extreme loads on offshore wind turbines. Accurate load prediction depends on proper modeling of the wind turbulence and the wave stochastic processes as well as of the turbine, the support structure, and the foundation. One method for modeling the support structure is to rigidly connect it to the seabed; such a foundation model is appropriate only when the sea floor is firm (as is the case for rock). To obtain realistic turbine response dynamics for softer soils, it is important that a flexible foundation is modeled. While a single discrete spring for coupled lateral/rotational motion or several distributed springs along the length of the monopile may be employed, a tractable alternative is to employ a fictitious fixed-based pile modeled as an “equivalent” cantilever beam, where the length of this fictitious pile is determined using conventional pile lateral load analysis in combination with knowledge of the soil profile. The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of modeling flexible pile foundations on offshore wind turbine loads such as the fore-aft tower bending moment at the mudline. We employ a utility-scale 5MW offshore wind turbine model with a 90-meter hub height in simulations; the turbine is assumed to be sited in 20 meters of water. For a critical wind-wave combination known to control long-term design loads, we study time histories, power spectra, response statistics, and probability distributions of extreme loads for fixed-base and flexible foundation models with the intention of assessing the importance of foundation model selection. Load distributions are found to be sensitive to foundation modeling assumptions. Extrapolation to rare return periods may be expected to lead to differences in derived nominal loads needed in ultimate limit state design; this justifies the use of flexible foundation models in simulation studies.

By combining well proven technology from suspension bridge engineering with offshore deep water technology it is found possible to realize a crossing for the 5 km wide and 550 meter deep Bjørnafjord in the western part of Norway. The proposed concept consists of a three span suspension bridge with two rock anchored towers on each side of the fjord, and two floating TLP (Tension Legged Platform) towers midfjord. The two side spans has a length of 1385 meters, the mid span has a length of 1325 meters, and the floaters are anchored at a depth of 550 meters and 450 meters utilizing a combination of suction and gravity anchors or possibly piled anchors. The floaters can be constructed with concrete or steel and two different shapes are looked upon. The superstructure consists of PPWS (Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strands) main cables, hangers and an aero-dynamical box girder. The effect of different configurations of connections and the introduction of a top tie cable to improve global behaviour in the vertical plane are addressed. Major challenges identified are related to ground conditions, environmental loadings, deep sea operations and maintenance and operation.

The representations of the ideal town: CosmopolisIn 1548, under the Florentine lordship of the Medici, Charles V gave Cosimo I de 'Medici the task of defending the territories of Elba and the commercial traffic of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Duke, who strongly believed in the potential of the island and wanted to transform it into the center of Florentine rule over the Tyrrhenian, decided to fortify the ancient city of Ferraia, the current Portoferraio. A real jewel of military town planning that took the name of Cosmopolis was born by the architect Giovanni Battista Bellucci and by the engineer Giovanni Camerini. Thanks to its natural conformation, the gulf of Portoferraio protected on one side a strip of land that closes the port like a spiral, and on the other hand protected by two rocky headlands overlooking the sea, was extremely strategic and suitable for defense. Fort Stella and Fort Falcone were built in the upper part of the promontory and the Linguella tower, near the dock, all connected by a bastion wall. Later the defense was further strengthened by walls and ramparts also on the land front side according to the project of the architect Bernardo Buontalenti, transforming the city into an impregnable fortress, as well as a safe naval base. The study of urban representations of the city testifies to how the foundation of Cosmopolis for the Medici duchy was an event of extraordinary value, symbol of the strength of the Duke and his expansive abilities, symbol of an ideal city not only conceived and designed in contemporary treatises, but actually made.
