Recently experts of the Israel police ballistic laboratory encountered a new version of the atypical firearms that is Airsoft pneumatic rifles converted for shooting cartridges of the caliber 5.56×45 mm. The Airsoft rifles are made to shoot nonmetal spherical projectiles in diameter of 6 mm. All variety Airsoft constructions can by divided into three groups: a) with spring mechanisms where the energy of compressed spring is used to produce air pressure; b) with electrical mechanisms where air pressure is provided by electrical pump; c) with mechanisms called Gas Blowback use energy of gas compressed in gas balloons. In many cases the Gas Blowback constructions of Airsoft rifle look similar to military firearms. They have similar construction of internal mechanisms. Different companies produce Airsoft copies of M-16 assault rifle. This Airsoft rifles can have the construction of trigger mechanism that is exact copy of the one used in M-16 assault rifle. Moreover, in some models detail sizes are the same as in real M-16 assault rifle. This makes possible to upgrade the Airsoft rifle for shooting cartridges of the caliber 5.56×45 mm by installing the rifled barrel (which can be bought on the Internet in USA) and using the original bolt carrier. The laboratory also received for the examination the upgraded Airsoft rifle samples with converted bolt carrier. So it made possible nоt use these firearm details. In some case identification of the evidence as atypical weapon is difficult because markings made by manufactures are identical to real M-16 assault rifles markings. This article discuses criminalistic examination methods of this homemade weapon type.

The British Army’s search for a breech-loading rifle in the 1860s saw a variety of designs tested. The Benson–Poppenburg rifle, based on a system developed by a Prussian émigré engineer, is one of the most intriguing to have been rejected. Johann von der Poppenburg developed a simple breech action which did not require a bolt handle and could be used to retrofit existing muzzle-loaded rifles. Despite testing by both the British and Dutch armed forces, the rifle was never adopted for military service. In this short note, the author examines the rifle’s development, patents, mechanical characteristics, and trials history.

The paper presents the selection of the most accurate and precise automatic rifle, as a significant weapon primarily for the realization of combat tasks of the army. The size of the image of the scattering of shots and its distance from the target determine the degree of accuracy and precision of the automatic rifle. These indicators determine the probability of hitting, which affects the efficiency of solving fire tasks with an automatic rifle. The complexity of the problem is due to the different tactical and technical characteristics of automatic rifles and different shooting results. The paper presents and describes the results of shooting automatic rifles of domestic production, as follows: AR 7.62 mm M70 AB2, AR M21 5.56 mm, MAR M17 6.5 mm. Using the AHP method, the calculation of the weight coefficients of the criteria was performed. Using the AHP method, an analysis of the accuracy and precision of automatic rifle shooting was performed and a conclusion was made about the rifle that has the best results depending on the shooting distance. The obtained results enable the definition of proposals for equipping the Serbian Armed Forces units with an adequate automatic rifle.

Results of tests on ergonomics of the handles for RAWAT project rifles are presented in the paper. The use of the rifles in the past has brought many conclusions and comments concerning the rifle handles as well. In order to cope with the expectations of customers it was decided to modify the reloading grip, deflector of cases, trigger and the safety catch. These components were redesigned, and fabricated by 3D printing technology to be finally tested. The modified components were examined by testing the functionality and convenience of using. The tests contained the handling of the rifle and firing with live ammunition.

Sluicing is the preferred mineral processing technique for the treatment of placer gold-bearing alluvium for small scale and artisanal miners in Ghana because sluice board is perceived to be the most cost effective device. However, there are differences in approaches from design to operation. In this work, about 50 kg of ore was obtained from “Peace School” small scale mining site near the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. It was processed to determine the effects of riffle height and spacing on gold recovery. It was confirmed that, in order to trap a greater percentage of gold particles, the height of the riffle ought to be higher than the suspension height of the gold. The suspension heights of the gold particles of the various operational regimes of the sluice board at superficial velocities of 0.5 m/s, 1.0 m/s, 1.5 m/s and 2.0 m/ were 0.9 cm, 1.2 cm, 1.5 cm and 2.9 cm respectively. Analysis of concentrates showed that, 85.4% of gold was recovered during sluicing at approximately 1.0 cm riffle height. The lowest recovery was recorded at 0.5 cm riffle height. Gold recovery was also affected by riffles spacing. For the indicated speeds and the riffle heights the necessary spacing should not be more than 20 cm. The peak recovery was obtained at a riffle height of 1.0 cm but dropped after 20.0 cm spacing. Keywords: Sluice Board, Riffle Height, Gold, Rifle Spacing

Conservation Law Enforcement is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, with more than a thousand Rangers killed over the last decade. Of these casualties, 58 per cent have been caused by either dangerous game or armed criminals. Despite this, it appears that only 29 per cent of Rangers worldwide carry out their duties while armed. In many instances, this is due to tight restrictions on the availability and issue of semi-automatic rifles. In countries where firearms laws restrict ready access to semi-automatic rifles, conservation agencies have often purchased and equipped their Rangers with shotguns. This article argues that, in the context of conservation law enforcement, shotguns have a range of limitations when compared to a bolt-action centrefire rifle, and that a civilian-legal ‘Ranger Rifle’—designed around law enforcement needs—is the best alternative where semi-automatic rifles are unavailable.

Guns in the home are a factor in pediatric unintentional and intentional firearm injuries, yet the patterns of ownership and use are unclear. Objectives. To describe the prevalence of firearms in households containing children who go to pediatricians, the types of firearms owned, the purposes of such ownership, the conditions of firearm storage, and the social correlates of ownership. Methods. Survey of parents attending 29 (urban, suburban, and rural) pediatric practices in Chicago, New Jersey, Houston, Utah, Georgia, Iowa, and South Carolina for well or sick child care during a 1-week study period. The main outcome measure was ownership of rifle/shotgun and/or handgun. Results. Gun ownership was reported by 37% of 5233 respondent families: rifles (26%), handguns (17%), and powder firearm (32%). Ownership varied significantly across practices and geographical locations. Thirteen percent of 823 handguns and 1% of 1327 rifles were reported both unlocked and loaded. Recreation was the most common reason for both rifle (75%) and handgun (59%) ownership; 48% of handguns were kept for self-protection versus 21% of rifles. In logistic regression models, predictor variables for firearm ownership included rural area, single family dwelling, at least one adult male, and fewer preschool children (for handgun and rifle); mother with at least 12 years education (for handgun), and white mother (for rifle). Conclusions. The data presented suggest that US pediatricians routinely see children in families that own firearms, including a worrisome number that keep loaded and unlocked handguns. Until more detailed information becomes available, it is reasonable for pediatricians to be guided by these data, and so to counsel routinely about gun exposure.

The research problem is the low ability to shoot air rifles in Class 10 m Air Rifle Women athletes before PORPROV XI 2022, due to the still weak accuracy of the players. This is evident from the various tournaments that have taken part, very rarely athletes are able to shoot on target. Mental imagery is one of the mental exercises that really has an influence on improving performance, especially in shooting. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of imagery training on increasing the accuracy of the 10 m Air Rifle Women Class before PORPROV XI 2022. The research design used was experimental one pre-test-post-test group, and the type of research is using experimental research. The research sample consisted of 9 athletes shooting the PERBAKIN NTB air rifle. The research instrument used was shooting 60 shots for 75 minutes. Based on data processing and analysis, the increase in the results of the initial training test was 73.33%. So the researchers concluded that: "There is an effect of imagery training on increasing the accuracy of the 10 m Class Air Rifle Women's shot before PORPROV XI 2022" meaning that there is a significant (real) effect of mental imagery training on the shooting skills of athletes shooting air rifles.

The paper is focused on the establishment of a mathematical model describing the motion of bolt carrier for the amphibious rifles when shooting underwater in the period of the projectile moving to the position of the gas port. Besides, the conditions for bolt carrier motion are studied. The object of this paper is the bolt carrier assembly of the 5.56 mm amphibious rifle according to the designing of the research project of the ministry of defense 2017.73.034. The result of this research indicates that: for the 5.56 mm amphibious rifle, the bolt carrier is only moving when the velocity of the projectile at the position of the gas vent is larger 360.25 m/s. The result of this research can be applied to the dynamic analysis of the automatic mechanism of gas-operated rifles when shooting underwater.

This thesis attempts to demonstrate how the British Government, through the creation of the South Persian Rifles (1916-1921) tried to protect their interests in south Persia, in the special circumstances of the outbreak of World War I, with the official sanction of the Persian Government. The account is given of the origins of the force, of the differences of opinions on its aims and objectives, of its organisation and strategy, its operations and other activities mainly in Fars. The "Sipahdär" agreement of August 1916 is treated in some detail and the relevance of the non-recognition of the force to the subsequent tribal uprisings and disturbances in Fars is examined. Lastly, the significance of the role of the South Persian Rifles is assessed in the light of the 1919 agreement and the aftermath of war, as well as the force's contribution to internal developments. An attempt has been made to discuss these issues as much from the point of view of the different departments of the Imperial and Indian Governments, as from the Persian standpoint. Events in the south have been treated more fully than hitherto from the perspective of internal Persian history

A lesão renal aguda (LRA) no pós-operatório de cirurgia cardíaca representa um desafio frequente para as equipas multidisciplinares, assumindo taxas de incidência variáveis, entre os 3% (Bove et al, 2004) e os 43% (Lombardi & Ferreiro, 2008). A definição de LRA não é unânime, persistindo grande variabilidade nos critérios utilizados, mantendo taxas de incidência díspares, mas elevadas. O sistema de classificação RIFLE permite uma clara definição e estratificação, assumindo-se com um instrumento válido no diagnóstico de LRA. A LRA aumenta o impacto das co morbilidades, o tempo de hospitalização e os custos associados. Cabe aos enfermeiros assumir uma atitude preventiva e implementar instrumentos preditores de risco, como garante da melhoria da qualidade dos cuidados. No âmbito do quadro de competências do enfermeiro especialista e decorrente do percurso desenvolvido no contexto dos ensinos clínicos promovemos a sensibilização dos profissionais para a especificidade da pessoa com alteração da eliminação renal. Em particular, delimitados pelo tema em questão, centramo-nos na pessoa submetida a cirurgia cardíaca em risco de desenvolver LRA no período pós-operatório. A partir dos resultados obtidos podemos afirmar que esta complicação é frequente e repercute-se nos resultados em saúde, nomeadamente nas taxas de mortalidade, na qualidade de vida e no aumento do tempo de internamento. Pretendemos assim evidenciar a necessidade de uma intervenção preventiva dos enfermeiros face ao risco de desenvolvimento de LRA no período pós-operatório. E, quando presente a necessidade de uma adequação técnico científica que permita uma abordagem uniforme nos cuidados à pessoa a experienciar esta transição. Como principal contributo deste percurso resultou a proposta de implementação do sistema de classificação RIFLE na Unidade de Cuidados Intensivos, (UCI) de Cirurgia Cárdio-Torácica, como instrumento para a prevenção e diagnóstico de LRA. Em síntese este percurso resultou no desenvolvimento de competências técnicas, científicas e relacionais específicas do Enfermeiro especialista em enfermagem médico-cirúrgica – área específica de intervenção: enfermagem nefrológica, orientados para área temática da LRA

With no significant changes in the design of rifle ranges in more than 100 years, the current range systems are not keeping pace with technological advancements. The Marine Corps rifle ranges are manpower and material intensive, requiring unit commanders to lose personnel to the training evolution for extended periods of non-productive time. Manual target operation, excessive transition time, and extra duties all contribute to eight to ten hours per day to accomplish one hour of live-fire training per individual Marine. Marines must remain at the range to act as scorekeepers, target makers, and/or target operators when not assigned to shoot. The design and implementation of an automated range system with capabilities specifically designed to operate, score, mark, and maintain targets would reduce the non-productive time a Marine spends on the rifle range. Results from this comparative analysis indicate that the automated range would reduce man-hours by seventy-five percent. Furthermore, the implementation of computer technology will enable instructors and shooters to better analyze each training evolution.

In 2009, the Commandant of the Marine Corps declared energy a top priority and created the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) Expeditionary Energy Office to develop an energy strategy to reduce and optimize energy usage throughout the Marine Corps. This thesis examines the operational tasks and capabilities that drive the current USMC rifle platoon’s energy burdens using an Expeditionary Warrior 2012 war-game scenario. The primary conclusion of the research is that increasing the platoon’s ability to carry supplies and developing standardized, rechargeable batteries offers the USMC opportunities to reduce energy at the platoon level. This thesis recommends that the USMC should investigate the use of robotic transport systems and use of unmanned aerial vehicles to reduce the number of sustainment flights required of large aircraft. It also recommends further research should be conducted to calculate the energy usage at the company level, analyzing robotic solutions and standardized batteries to reduce energy at the platoon level and conducting analysis for water reduction.

An alternate method for mitigating the depredating physiological affects of a soldiers marksmanship due to combat stressors can be achieved through the design and implementation of a active stabilization system for small arms weapons. The INSTAR system is an innovative active stabilization system designed to decouple the shooterâ s disturbance effects from the barrel movement. The INSTAR system uses an piezoelectric actuator separating the barrel of the rifle from its stock to stabilize barrel movement. This paper uses various control techniques to develop control algorithms for simulation. The level of performance for each control algorithm is based on how well each they measure up to the criteria developed from the INSTAR system. This paper furthers research on INSTAR by developing and comparing four control designs that may be implemented within the INSTAR system.

This CAPSTONE Report documents the Systems Engineering (SE) efforts of "Team Marine," from JAN 2009 to SEP 2009, in developing a recommendation to the US Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), on the best course of action to 'Enhance the USMC Expeditionary Rifle Squad Communications System.' The squad leader is the cornerstone for USMC tactical operations. Clear, concise, accurate and reliable communications to and from the squad leader is the key to squad operations, performance and tactical effectiveness. Today's fielded communications system for the squad leader requires the use of two separate radios, each with different encryption algorithms, different user interfaces, and different data processing capabilities. This primitive design has thrust the squad leader into a complex Human Factors environment with disparate components that have not been well engineered or integrated. Team Marine applied and tailored the systems engineering (SE) process based on NPS course work and professional experience. This SE process enabled the team to completely understand and model the current system in terms of architecture, capabilities and functions. The process led the team and stakeholders to conclude that an evolutionary approach of system integration was preferred over the traditional Manufacturer A vs. Manufacturer B run off. The team's recommendation is to pursue an integrated communications system, based on existing and emerging components, as the best course of action. The first incremental step of the recommendation is to upgrade the existing elements by adding an automated communications processor with enhanced human to system interfaces.

In order to study the influence of rifling and coating on temperature field and stress field distribution of gun barrel in the condition of thermo-pressure coupling, a small-caliber rifle gun barrel was taken as study object and a FEM model of the maximum chamber pressure section with rifling and coating was established based on the ANSYS platform in this paper. The program was written based on ANSYS parameter design language, and then temperature field and transient stress response of this gun barrel during the firing of 10 rounds burst with 600 rpm firing rate was simulated numerically under the cyclic action of high frequency dynamic thermal pulse and dynamic pressure pulse by use of the direct coupling analysis. Then the distribution rule of the temperature field and stress field of the rifled gun barrel were obtained.

A widely perceived idea that circulates among the marksmen and sniper community is that rifles equipped with sound suppressors will yield nonnegligible reduction in dispersion when compared to that obtained from the same rifle under the same firing conditions. In order to verify and quantify this assertion, an experimental investigation was carried out to verify the effect of suppressors on the observed dispersion. Firing were performed indoor at 200 m using a bench mounted Mann barrel fitted with a Remington bolt action 700. The ammunition used for the trial was the Remington .223. A commercially available mono-core sounds suppressor was used for the trial. The results show a clear reduction in dispersion when firing the weapon using the sound suppressor. Orthogonal high-speed cameras located at 1 m from the muzzle were used to document the first maximum yaw for each projectile fired. On average, the first maximum yaws were found to be smaller when using the sound suppressor. This indicates that the gas flow around the projectile within the suppressor acts as a projectile stabilizer following its exit from the barrel.

Up-down and rifle aiming maneuvers are common tasks employed by soldiers and athletes. The movements underlying these tasks largely determine performance success, which motivates the need for a noninvasive and portable means for movement quantification. We answer this need by exploiting body-worn and rifle-mounted miniature inertial measurement units (IMUs) for measuring torso and rifle motions during up-down and aiming tasks. The IMUs incorporate MEMS accelerometers and angular rate gyros that measure translational acceleration and angular velocity, respectively. Both sensors enable independent estimates of the orientation of the IMU and thus, the orientation of a subject’s torso and rifle. Herein, we establish the accuracy of a complementary filter which fuses these estimates for tracking torso and rifle orientation by comparing IMU-derived and motion capture-derived (MOCAP) torso pitch angles and rifle elevation and azimuthal angles during four up-down and rifle aiming trials for each of 16 subjects (64 trials total). The up-down trials consist of five maximal effort get-down-get-up cycles (from standing to lying prone back to standing), while the rifle aiming trials consist of rapidly aiming five times at two targets 15 feet from the subject and 180 degrees apart. Results reveal that this filtering technique yields warfighter torso pitch angles that remain within 0.55 degrees of MOCAP estimates and rifle elevation and azimuthal angles that remain within 0.44 and 1.26 degrees on average, respectively, for the 64 trials analyzed. We further examine potential remaining error sources and limitations of this filtering approach. These promising results point to the future use of this technology for quantifying motion in naturalistic environments. Their use may be extended to other applications (e.g., sports training and remote health monitoring) where noninvasive, inexpensive, and accurate methods for reliable orientation estimation are similarly desired.

Abstract Throughout history there have been a variety of accuracy measures applied to the act of throwing, hurling, launching and/or firing of objects. These include string measure, mean radius, extreme spread, closest to center, probability of hit and score. There are two objectives of the present contribution. The first is expository in nature, to describe the use and relative merits of these measures. Historical data will be examined to estimate the accuracies of such weapons as the trebuchet (a technologically advanced form of a catapult), longbow, smooth bore rifle, “Kentucky” muzzleloading rifle, early breech loading rifle and turn of the century schuetzen rifle. Data related to modern military and sporting firearms will also be discussed. The second objective is to illustrate the use of such measures by evaluating actual data from firings of a scale model of a trebuchet. The model was designed using computer simulations and optimization techniques developed by others.

This paper deals with analysis of the OC4 DeepCWind semi-submersible wind turbine, which is provided by NREL through the OC4 project. This concept is a three-column semi-submersible supporting a 5 MW wind turbine on an additional central column. The fact that the semi-submersible floater needs a large water line restoring moment to achieve sufficient stability and the control of the cost based on the steel weight make the design of braces and pontoons very challenging. Effective methods are needed to check the strength of the brace system based on the response forces and moments in the braces under different design environmental conditions, while the floating wind turbine is needed to be considered as an aero-hydro-servo-elastic system. A novel modeling methodology based on the code Simo/Riflex is introduced in this paper. Simo/Riflex is a state-of-the-art code that can account for the coupling effect between rigid body motions and slender structures (e.g. mooring lines, braces and blades) in the time-domain. Simo/Riflex can be combined with Aerodyn, which is a state-of-the-art aerodynamic code, to model the floating wind turbine as an aero-hydro-servo-elastic system, as well as be combined with simplified aerodynamic codes (e.g.TDHMILL) to improve the efficiency of the numerical simulation. The novel modeling method can give the forces and moments in the brace system of the floater under hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads in the time-domain. In order to get the structural response of the braces, the side columns and the central supporting column are modeled as independent rigid bodies in Simo while the braces are modeled by beam elements in Riflex. Master and slave relationship is applied at the joints in between of the columns and braces. As an application example, the novel modeling method based on the code Simo/Riflex+TDHMILL, which is capable of modeling the floating wind turbine as an aero-hydro-elastic system, has been used to carry out Ultimate Limit State (ULS) design check for the brace system of the OC4 DeepCWind semi-submersible wind turbine based on relevant standards, i.e. NORSOK N00-3, NORSOK N-004, IEC61400-1, IEC61400-3. The modeling method can also be used by other codes which have similar features as Simo/Riflex.
