Rice paper is a rice-based food product that is currently popular in various Asian countries. Brown rice has various advantages over white rice, it contains flavonoid (anthocyanins) as antioxidants and also brown rice has a high fiber. Porang flour is an alternative food that is low in fat and high in fiber. This research is a descriptive experimental research design that aims to analyze the organoleptic characteristics, acceptability, content of macronutrients and fiber of the innovative product of making red rice rice paper with porang flour substitution. This study uses 3 formulas, namely the addition of brown rice, (tapioca flour and porang flour with different levels). The experiment was repeated twice on the same 30 panelists. The three samples were tested proximately (carbohydrate, protein, fat, ash content, fiber content, and water content). The data were analyzed using the Friedman Test on the four indicators including color, aroma, taste, and texture the results is significance value (p = 0.0001) < (0.05) which can be interpreted as all indicators (color, aroma, texture, and taste) has a real difference. The conclusion of this study is that rice paper F3 has the highest average value (the most preferred formula for the general public panelists).

Abstract: In rice production industry as per the market demand, good quality rice evolution is very important in the present time. The factors for rice quality such as its whiteness, shape, milling degree, chalkiness, cracks and polish are the important factors for to evaluate the rice quality. Quality of rice becomes necessity nowadays for to defend the consumers from using sub standard products, the quality of rice is an important necessity. In the world population more than half people are the primary consumer of rice. It is one of the most important foods to provide energy, protein, essential vitamin and minerals, fiber grain, beneficial antioxidants, and carbohydrates. It is complicated by using the rice kernel manually for rice quality analysis because due to time consuming and having a chance for error with the bias of human perception. To overcome such issues and achieve the rice quality, the image processing technique has a wide scope. The main motive of this paper is to review different techniques that calculate the quality of rice using the image processing technique. The research describes an optimized waste-to-energy technology that utilizes agricultural residues for renewable energy, while reducing global methane emissions and maintaining food security. Laboratory-, pilot- and farm-scale anaerobic batch digesters were evaluated to enhance methane production from the anaerobic digestion of untreated rice straw in dry conditions using a novel co-digestion approach. An existing farm-scale biogas plant loaded with rice straw and piggery wastewater produced 295 MWh in a 422-day digestion cycle. The long acclimation period (approximately 200 days) and low biogas yield (181 LCH4/kgVS) could be enhanced by adding anaerobic sludge from the pulp and paper mill treatment process. In a laboratory setting, the addition of the sludge resulted in a specific methane yield of 335 LCH4/kgVS within 92 days. Hydrolysis of the straw was accelerated, and stable conditions were observed in terms of pH, alkalinity and nutrients. Similar improvements were demonstrated in pilot-scale digesters (1 m3) - a specific methane yield of 231 LCH4/kgVS was achieved in a 93-day digestion cycle with the sludge compared to 189 days without the sludge. Insufficient mixing within the pilot-scale system caused lower overall methane yields than those obtained in the laboratory-scale digesters. If sufficient mixing and mesophilic conditions are maintained within the farm-scale system, the co-digestion of rice straw with pig wastewater and paper mill sludge (wet weight ratio of 1:1.25:0.5) has the potential to reduce the retention time to three months (versus 422 days) and increase methane yields to over 300 LCH4/kgVS

This research evaluates the applicability of waxy rice as the paper coating binder. The reasons for accomplishing the thesis are because the literature hasshown that waxy rices are part of the major agricultural products in Taiwan andAsia, however, waxy rices have not been applied to any industrial processes. Additionally, waxy rices are composed of nearly all amylopectin as opposed tosignificant amylose content in other starch- containing material, such as corn starch. This would give rise to higher solution viscosity of the waxy rices and plausible betterbinder performance. The experience work in this study has comparedthe binder performance of waxy rices with that of the oxidizedtapioca starch and soy protein. Moreover, waxy rices aretreated in both alkaline and acidic media in attempt to improvetheir applicability. The experience results are: 1.Without chemical treatment, the waxy rice (short form) giveshigher opacity but lower picking strength than oxidized starch and soy protein at the equivalent binder addition levers.2.All studied waxy rices (long, short, and black forms), after alkaline treatment, gives higher picking strehgth, gloss, and opacity than without alkaline treatment. Nevertheless, lower brightnessof coated papers is obtaind when using alkaline-treatedwaxy rices.3.Acid treatment on the waxy ricesresults in higher opacity and brightness than without treatmentHowever, the acid treatment also meaningfully lowers the gloss and picking stength of the coated papers.

Background and the purpose of study. At present, pharmaceutical researchers are focusing on instantaneous intraoral dispersible technologies as novel drug delivery systems because; they have outstanding advantages over the traditional oral and parenteral routes of drug administration. Some essential natural drugs have low oral bioavailability due to extensive first pass metabolism and pre systemic degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. Aim. Now, a cheap rice paper Intraoral Dispersible Film (IDF) has been developed Objectives. In this study, formulation was optimized using the experimental factorial design. The IDFs were loaded with model, natural, anti-cancer drugs, Resveratrol and Curcumin with low oral bioavailability. Methods. They were evaluated for thickness, folding endurance, swelling behaviour, among others. These related to their drug release properties. Permeation was evaluated using the pig mucosal membrane mounted on a Franz diffusion cell. Taste testing was done to determine acceptability using a taste panel. Results and Discussions. Sixteen formulations showed variations in their profiles. Formulation 16 proved optimal. The dissolution rate at steady state concentrations of Resveratrol was 29mg per second and the Permeability coefficient was 389 mg/sec.cm2. That of Curcumin was 0.25mg per second and the Permeability coefficient was 42.71 mg/sec.cm2 Resveratrol permeability rate was 0.42 mg/sec. and that of Curcumin was 0.14 mg/sec. Resveratrol Flux was 0.21 mg/sec./cm2. Curcumin Flux was 0.14 mg/sec. / cm2. Drug entrapment was 80% for both molecules. The 20 mg of Resveratrol and Curcumin would then dissolve in 47.6 sec. and 71.4 sec. respectively. In this study, after permeation, a concentration of 6.73mg/ml of Resveratrol and 0.061mg/ml of Curcumin were detected after 2 hours of the experiment on administering only 20 mg of each of the drugs suggesting that Curcumin is 100 times less permeable than Resveratrol. The release profile is a burst release. On contrast, Curcumin oral dose of 2 g/kg to rats yielded 1.35±0.23 μg/ml in 0.83 hours and in humans, the same dose either undetectable or extremely low (0.006±0.005 μg/ml after 1 hour. Two separate mono-glucuronide metabolites yielded Cmax ~7.5 μM following a single 5.0 g oral dosage of Resveratrol. Conclusion. The key finding is, ex vivo release profiles of the optimized formulation revealed first order release and later zero order. Therefore, it is evident that rice paper IDF could efficiently deliver natural drugs into the systemic circulation. However, later, further studies are needed to prove increased bioavailability to be performed in human subjects

From the beginning of the Han immigrants' initial plantations to the decline in present days, the rice paper industry in the Hsinchu area lasted for about 300 years, spanning across three major phases: Qing Dynasty, Japanese Occupation and Post War. Each phase had its unique developmental features. Paintings exported from Guanzhou had begun to rise since the 18th century, especially after Kai-chi Huang recruited the rice-paper plant craftsmen from Mainland China to the Hsinchu area, which has not only changed the productive modes of Taiwan rice-paper products by bringing them to the international market, but also formed relationships based on industrial cooperation among various ethnic groups involved in the rice-paper industry under economic incentives. Besides discussing the development and changes of the rice-paper industry in Hsinchu, this research explores the ethnic relationships behind the industry's history, specifically, how ethnic relations determine the industry's production and marketing structure, and how such a structure stabilizes ethnic relations. This research finds that from the harvest of raw materials to the production and marketing of rice-paper products, all of the written documents in the past only presented the importance of indigenous and Hokien people, without mentioning the Hakka. In fact, the Hakka were never absent in the production and marketing process of the rice-paper industry, but rather, they played an important role as the bridge. Besides, the research also exposes the impression that Taiwan society held toward the indigenous people during the post-war period. Those with prejudicial views still chose self-rationalization while their attitudes remained unchanged, which obviously has a negative influence on mutual understanding among ethnic groups. Overall speaking, through fieldwork and investigation of historical documents, this research portrays the everyday ethnic relations among the indigenous, Hakka and Hokien peoples based on their coordination in the rice-paper industry. Thus, although the ethnic boundaries did exist in common daily life, it was generally agreed that there were no ethnic problems, and everyone treated each other equally and coexisted well. Even when there were conflicts, peaceful coexistence could still be maintained through mutual tolerance and interdependent learning.

AbstractIn rapidly transforming Asian environments, traditional agricultural heritage systems struggle with increasing development pressure and out-migration. Drawing on the Chinese cultural landscape of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces as a case study, the paper investigates how the concepts of scale and “politics of scale” can be fruitfully mobilised for critical heritage theory and provide practical solutions to overcome conservation–development tensions. In processes of ethnic tourism development and cultural commodification, government authorities pursue different scalar strategies to harness natural and cultural resources for heritage-led regeneration schemes. Such strongly tourism-oriented agendas, as prevailed in the initial stages of development, privilege natural and selected cultural values over social values, thereby contrasting with local inhabitants’ aspirations to improve their living conditions. To encourage participation and sustainable cultural landscape management, the study suggests “upscaling” traditional knowledge and local interests.

AbstractIn this chapter, we propose a framework of market-based incentive mechanisms for the adoption and scaling of sustainable production standards throughout rice value chains and review evidence of two mechanisms that have been piloted in Vietnam: “internalizing” and “embodying.” The evidence suggests that sustainable production standards can be successfully “internalized” in rice value chains through policies (public governance) that provide an enabling environment for vertical coordination and private governance of standards (e.g., through contract farming). However, the major challenge policymakers and value chain actors face for this mechanism to succeed is to reconcile differences in contract preferences between contracting parties and solve trust and coordination issues (e.g., contract breach and side-selling). Market evidence suggests that sustainable production standards can be successfully “embodied” in rice products through certification and labeling. Vietnamese consumers were found to put significant price premiums on sustainable production certification and even more so if supplemental information is provided on certification and traceability. Both examples highlight the role policymakers can play in the adoption and scaling of sustainable production standards throughout rice value chains by creating an enabling environment for vertical coordination and private sector investment in certification and information campaigns. We conclude by discussing how policymakers can overcome the challenges for these mechanisms to succeed and identifying areas for future research. Furthermore, we provide a detailed description of the monitoring and evaluation process of CORIGAP activities. We explain the development from paper-based to computer-assisted survey tools, the evaluation of changes that farmers perceive and provide a case study on impact evaluation using econometric analysis. It becomes clear that a multidimensional project like CORIGAP needs a variety of means to assess the changes on different levels. We found that farmers in all CORIGAP countries perceive positive changes. Their yields and profits have increased, and the project has exceeded its target reach in all countries. This was also due to other funding schemes that supported CORIGAP technologies and practices, such as the rollout of 1M5R in Vietnam and the 3CT in China. The project used a variety of dissemination strategies to communicate the outputs and outcomes to a plethora of different stakeholders. Among the most successful were social media campaigns, including informative videos about CORIGAP technologies and practices. The chapter closes with some anecdotal evidence of how, especially postharvest technologies, influenced policies in the CORIGAP countries. We provide lessons learned from the project to be taken care of in future projects that aim to introduce sustainable agricultural practices and technologies to improve natural resource management.

Bio based materials fall under the broad category of bio-products or bio-based products, which includes materials, chemicals and energy derived from renewable biological resources. This research shows the preparation of both, paper sheets with blend fillers of chitosan and rice starch and chitosan and rice starch films, which could be used as packaging material for a variety of applications. In this research, we used a blend mixture, different concentrations of chitosan and rice starch both in paper production and in films to investigate the optical properties of the obtained materials with a combination of ultrasonic treatment during the film formation. The research showed that the optical properties of the obtained packaging materials improved. It also showed that blend fillers of chitosan and rice starch are effective paper fillers in the preparation of cellulose mixture for bio based packaging materials and the optical properties are with slight changes. The investigation on the optical properties of the obtained paper samples during accelerated thermal showed that the ageing of paper with addition of chitosan and chitosan and rice starch blends had the same behaviour through the 72 hours of ageing. The ultrasonic treatment of the films improved transparency. The surface at untreated blend film was more uneven compared to chitosan and rice starch films, which improved after the treatment.

Pyrolysis of biomass materials can implement the efficient conversion of biomass to gaseous, liquid and solid energy products. Compared with experimental research which needs massive apparatus and funds and also takes long time, the computer simulation of biomass pyrolysis is more convenient and flexible to achieve the main characteristics of the process. Simulation of thermodynamic equilibrium for the pyrolysis of rice husk was studied in this paper. Based on the minimization of Gibbs free energy, MATLAB was used to calculate thermodynamic equilibrium for the pyrolysis of rice husk in the temperatures ranges from 523 K to 1723 K at intervals of 100 K. The results showed that the contents of H2 and CO increased rapidly with the temperature from 723 K to 1223 K, while the contents of H2O, CH4, CO2 and C decreased sharply. When the temperature was higher than 1223 K, the yields of H2 and CO reached the maximum of 51 mol% and 48 mol% respectively, and then kept stable. In order to be closer to experimental results, the constrain conditions of element C in tar was introduced in the calculations. The results indicated that, in the main components of tar from 523 K to 1223 K, the contents of naphthalene and toluene both decreased and then toluene vanished gradually. However, the content of benzene increased with increasing temperature and finally became the dominant product when the temperature was above 1300 K.

Due to the high annual production of rice, rice straw has become a numerous agricultural waste product. We propose in this paper to produce oil sorbent for oil-water separation from waste rice straw fibers. Rice straw cellulose were extracted using 5 wt.% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at 90 °C for 2 hours. After washing with water, rice straw fibers were tested with litmus paper until pH was neutral. A 20-minute boil was applied to sticky rice flour and water. A strainer was placed on the boiling sticky rice flour. Rice straw fibers were delicately spun, placed in the sieve, and dried at 60 °C for 24 hours. The identification of rice straw cellulose was accomplished through the utilization of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In order to evaluate the oil absorption capacity, it is necessary to introduce rice straw into a designated container. Adsorption was measured at time intervals of 10, 20, and 30 minutes. Cease the act of quantifying temporal intervals beyond the predetermined duration. Extract the specimen from its receptacle and proceed to measure its weight. To maximize the %adsorption, the oil sorbent weight, adsorption time, and contact area were considered. The maximum adsorption capacity of 175.67% was obtained by optimizing the following parameters: oil sorbent weight of 30.10 g, adsorption time of 30 min, and contact area of 6.25 cm2. The oil sorbent, which uses waste rice straw fibers as raw materials, may have a good application possibility in the remediation of oil spills, industrial waste water, and waste water from households.

In an effort to adopt emerging technologies in food security assessment through a codevelopment approach, the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development’s (ICIMOD) SERVIR-HKH Initiative undertook a pilot study in Chitwan District in 2019 to jointly develop methods for satellite remote sensing and machine learning-based in-season crop assessment. MoALD experts and relevant stakeholders thoroughly reviewed the approach before the honourable minister approved it for formal use in the national-level assessment for 2020 and onwards. For wider adoption of the advanced data science methods established in the pilot study, we customised the technology by developing a digital suite of software, including GeoFairy (a mobile app to facilitate field data collection by field extension professionals at the district level) and RiceMapEngine (a simplified platform for machine learning-based crop classification to facilitate crop area map production by MoALD’s GIS Section). In the current federal governance structure of Nepal, high-quality crop maps and yield estimates will not only bridge information needs among the federal and subnational institutions but also provide a means for consistent cross-country crop status assessments and communication.

The goal of this working paper is to identify the core challenges that have contributed to the poor performance of Ethiopia’s rice sector, and highlight approaches to successfully promote the commercialisation of the rice value chain. The authors achieve this by emphasising the underlying political economy dynamics of the rice value chain in Ethiopia, and how these can offer a better understanding of the drivers and constraints of agricultural commercialisation in the country. The paper also discusses the performance of, and challenges faced by, actors involved in the rice value chain. In addition, it looks at the role of development partners in promoting the rice value chain, the role of rice in the rural labour market, as well as the impact of COVID-19 on the various actors.

The introduction of rice into Ethiopia provided a solution to food insecurity. More recently, national policy has emphasised the positive relationship between rice specialisation and commercialisation and, thus, higher incomes. In retrospect, this initiative has been hugely successful as the regions where rice has been introduced have been transformed from heavily relying on food aid to becoming a thriving commercial centre. This transformation owes much to the increase in the production, consumption and commercial value of rice. However, the relationship between specialisation and commercialisation is far from straightforward and is mediated by poverty, as proxied by farm size in this paper. Using a novel cross-sectional dataset of rice farmers from the Fogera Plain in Ethiopia, collected in 2018, in this paper we look at the relationship between rice specialisation and commercialisation and how specialisation and commercialisation decisions and outcomes are mediated by farm size. Specifically, we characterise farmers by the extent of rice specialisation and commercialisation and explore the role of landholding size.

Rice was considered a minor crop in Ethiopia, rarely consumed by many households in Sub-Saharan Africa. In recent decades, however, it has become the most rapidly growing staple food source in the country. This paper presents an historical analysis of rice commercialisation and the observed agrarian changes that have resulted from its introduction and spread in Ethiopia. The paper analyses the role of the state, private actors and development partners in promoting improvements in rice production and value chain upgrading, as well as examines the impacts of small-scale commercialisation on local livelihoods and rural economies.

Until recently, attention to rice value chain upgrading has been limited in many rice-producing countries of Eastern Africa. Yet, it is this mid-stream section (the millers and traders) – the so-called ‘hidden middle’ – which is essential to sustaining the capacity of rice value chains to contributing to food security in the region, as it fulfils a crucial intermediary role between supply and demand. In this paper, we focus on the role of rice processors as key actors in rice sector development in East Africa along with what challenges and opportunities they face, drawing on primary data generated from surveys and key informant interviews in Ethiopia and Tanzania.

With the expansion of rice production in Ethiopia’s Fogera Plain, the rural labour market, highly characterised by the casual unskilled labour supply, has flourished. This is mainly associated with the nature of rice production, where certain agronomic practices demand a significant investment of time and thus family labour may not be sufficient. This has created an opportunity for rice farmers to hire labour when they need for extra help, and also for unskilled labourers to gain casual employment. This paper explores the characteristics of rural labour markets, trends in hired labour use and the impact of hired labour on smallholder farmers’ rice productivity and commercialisation using data collected from 723 randomly selected smallholder rice farmers in the Fogera Plain.

This paper presents the political economy of rice commercialisation in Tanzania. It is based on a review of trade policies, regulations, strategies, and programmes implemented since the 1960s to promote rice commercialisation, and the views of key informants. Key findings that emerge from the review of literature and key informant interviews indicate that the performance of the value chain over time has been negatively affected by the combined effects of the policies, regulations, strategies, and programmes implemented concurrently.
