The article discusses the topic of the crisis of modern philosophy. This theme is presented as special crisis rhetoric not interested in philosophy. Rhetoric contrasts to theme of philosophy as a way of escaping from the externally imposed rhetorical tricks. As a result, attempt to define a specific mode of existence of philosophy and the philosopher is given.

Abstract This study investigates the question of Chinese indirection as a result of the use of modality expressions, which is conventionally believed to be the hallmark of Chinese rhetoric (e.g. Young, 1994; Bond, 1991; Powers and Gong, 1994). The present research compares and contrasts the degree of assertiveness as reflected in the patterns of modality in two corpora of expert Chinese and English argumentative writing on the same controversial subject. Corpus evidence shows that contrary to expectations, the Chinese writers are significantly more assertive than the English in arguing their case. The frequency of use and distribution patterns of intensifiers present both quantitative and qualitative evidence for the rhetorical differences, which may be accounted for culturally.

This article seeks to view Augustine's early work as a form of revelatory rhetoric where the aim is to define and express the nature of the divine. This aim contrasts with Augustine's post-ordination work where the aim is more deliberative in nature through a language that instructs and moves his audience. While the contexts and rhetorical purposes of these eras are distinct, there is a continuity in terms of Augustine's theology. I argue that it is Augustine's rhetorical context that distinguishes his early and later work through an analysis of De libero arbitrio.

Research from Shogan (2007) and Lim (2008) on the executive branch proposes that the American presidency has adopted an anti-intellectual approach to leadership, such that there is a concerted rejection of thoughtful political discourse from the president. This has been reflected by what appears to be a relative decline in both the linguistic and substantive complexity of presidential rhetoric. Shogan’s (2007) work, while focused on examining whether Republicans are more apt to employ anti-intellectual leadership than Democrats, raises an additional topic worthy of empirical examination: the potential relationship between anti-intellectual leadership and unilateral action from the president. If anti-intellectual leadership is a defiant form of leadership that opts to publicly demonstrate the rejection of external expertise, the usage of anti-intellectual rhetoric from the president might be able to predict the usage of unilateral action. On the other hand, anti-intellectual rhetoric might be used as a straightforward and quick means to explain unilateral action, such that change in the level of unilateral action can predict the usage of simplistic rhetoric. Unfortunately, no one has yet to empirically test whether rhetorical simplicity predicts unilateral action, unilateral action predicts rhetorical simplicity, or there is a multi-directional relationship present. This project makes an initial attempt to remedy this gap in the literature. The project contrasts the monthly average simplicity level of the presidential weekly public address with the monthly number of executive orders emanating from the executive branch, using information spanning between February 1993 and May 2015. The initial findings from the vector autoregression and moving average representation analyses suggest that prior change in rhetorical simplicity predicts the usage of executive orders, and that an increase in rhetorical simplicity helps produce an increase in the number of executive orders offered by the president.

At universities, scholars in English studies manage what Gieryn (1999) called disciplinary boundary work (the rhetorical making and policing of boundaries that construct the discipline and its institutional formations as different from other disciplines and social formations) through categorical contrasts, including: literary criticism vs. writing studies/rhetoric; scholarship vs. creative writing; quantitative vs. qualitative research; university vs. K–12 schooling; university vs. workplace; and, of course, that most basic border of disciplinarity”disciplinary knowledge vs. everyday belief and culture. The two research reports in this issue of RTE both address college-level work in the field and both highlight interesting ways in which current theoretical and methodological developments are putting pressure on disciplinary boundaries in English studies.

This article contends that ancient Near Eastern gender ideals concerning masculinity are brought to bear by the Exodus narrative to shape an effective rhetoric, a rhetoric which compares and contrasts the primary male characters of the narrative: Yhwh, Moses, and Pharaoh. The text portrays these male characters as variously fulfilling or failing to meet ancient Near East masculine ideals in order to array Yhwh, Moses, and Pharaoh in relation to one another as effective males. In doing so, the text casts Yhwh as a male character who meets the ideal, Pharaoh as a male character who falls short of the ideal, and Moses as a male character who wavers in between the two. By drawing upon ancient gender ideals to shape its rhetoric, the text reinforces these gender ideals, rather than deconstructing them.

This article describes how the concept of communication is reconsidered under two aspects, theoretical and historical-social relatively to today's world. The first: communication cannot be reduced to a process of exteriorisation according to a limited view of communication. This contrasts with global semiotics (Sebeok) and the fact that being, life is communication. The second: with respect to economic reality, the industrial revolution of automation, globalisation of communication, universalisation of the market, communication in the production, exchange, consumption cycle is present in all three phases and not only in exchange. The dominant communication-production system tends to present itself through massmedial communication, and through the rhetoric of its ideo-logic as the only system possible, to maintain and reproduce at all costs, despite its openly destructive character. Semiotics must cultivate a global vision, which as semioethics and in a “semio-dialogic” perspective will interrogate dominant ideo-logic and propose new forms of living together.

This article seeks to explain Edmund Burke's notorious verbal vehemence as the consequence of a deliberate rhetorical strategy. I argue that over the course of a thirty-year parliamentary career, Burke relied on sharply formulated historical contrasts in order to express his opposition to the policies of successive ministries and warn of threats to the nation's defining achievements. Through the use of four distinct syntactical patterns, Burke cultivated a style of hyperbole which exaggerated both the failings of the present and the virtues of the national past, focusing on two periods in particular: the High Middle Ages and the early eighteenth-century era of Whig Oligarchy.

This paper explores a variety of metaphors notably, war, revenge, and a journey of spirituality awakening — used by the 1996 presidential and vice-presidential candidates in Taiwan. It uses the 1996 presidential election rhetoric as a case study to analyze how political ideologies, tactics and strategies are incorporated in metaphors in presidential slogans. It adopts Lakoff & Johnson (1980)’s proposal of metaphor as symbols that orient our perception and influence how we structure our actions. Kennedy (1998)’s treaties on political rhetoric are introduced as theoretical background for further analysis, following a short sketch of the socio-political context of recent democratic developments in Taiwan. Studies of the election rhetoric, its contributions and limitations are then examined. Data for analysis were collected from newspapers, official memoranda and pamphlets available to the public over the campaign period, roughly from late January to late March in 1996. The results show overlaps and contrasts of metaphorical usage among the four sets of candidates. In conclusion, metaphorical usage not only orients the campaign style of the candidates but also shapes voters’ perceptions of proposed political ideals.

Annotation:
How did Late Antiquity’s societies articulate their identities? This dissertation is a study of the construction of textual identities, as revealed by an analysis of Origen’s Paulinism which aimed to construct Christian identity in the third century CE. I have chosen extracts from Origen’s exegesis of Paul, found primarily in one text, his Commentary on Romans, as resources for my examination of identity issues. This text is an extremely helpful example of a deliberate fashioning of Christian identity through Origen’s joint use of Hellenistic paideia and the Bible. Pierre Bourdieu’s notion of habitus provides a helpful lens in decoding Origen’s and Hellenistic texts. Using habitus, the focus is on the rhetoric of identity formation through the fabric of the cultural, social, political, ideological, and literary contexts of Origen’s world. The study is more descriptive than polemical. The Greek paideia provides an immediate background to Late Antiquity’s concept of identity formation. The extant literature of the period comprised the fundamental vehicles of self–definition. This concept of fashioning identity through the construction of texts presents numerous difficulties for the contemporary reader. I will show that Origen used Greco–Roman moral philosophy and rhetoric in interpreting Paul. In seeking Origen’s notion of Christian identity, Origen’s reading of Romans is shaped by strategies of self–scrutiny and self–formation. Although Origen modifies the Greco–Roman moral philosophies—such as the notion of self–control, transformational narratives, and rhetoric deployment in his exegesis—much of the shared cultural and literary background remains. Using the Hellenistic nuances of self–control and rhetoric, Origen shows his audience a distinct picture of what a transformed, mature believer should look like, the humanitas. The transformation that a believer underwent resulted in a new or intensified form of piety with consequent changes in social affiliations, relations and loyalties. He also uses different descriptions —“new man,” “inner man” and “perfect”—to identify the mature transformed believers. This believer is the humanitas, the much sought after identity, with the milieu of the third century C.E. He attempted to create a body of knowledge and to utilize it for the preparation of a strong Christian identity in the midst of the pressures and temptations of the hegemonic Roman Empire and the pervasive Greco–Roman culture. Along with the paideia, the Roman Empire nurtured and challenged Origen’s Paulinism. The Roman Empire did not require individuals, or even communities, to adopt for themselves a distinctly Roman identity to the exclusion of all others. Yet, everyone was required to worship the genus of the Emperor. The Roman identity transformed the Greek–barbarian dichotomy into an imperial ideology which claimed Roman supremacy over all other cultures and people. This usurpation of other societies by the Romans is an inverted mirror image of Origen’s usurpation of Rome’s Romanitas or humanitas through his Paulinism. Thus, he is to be seen constructing identity through shared forms of symbolic and linguistic construction which were readily available within his socio–political reality.

Annotation:
The discourse on stability of petroleum contracts revolves around how to resolve the tension between the sovereign right to regulate the petroleum industry and the necessity to protect the legitimate interests of foreign investors. The irreversible nature of investment in the petroleum sector, the long pay back period in petroleum contracts, and the political and commercial risks inherent in petroleum projects necessitates stability over the life of the contract as an essential condition for achieving economic interests for the main players in the petroleum industry. The stability of a petroleum contract involves a complex interaction of the legal, economic and political environment in the host country in which it operates and is profoundly shaped by the interplay between internal and external factors governing the petroleum industry. The aim of the thesis is to examine and analyse the recent trends on stability of the petroleum contract in developing countries and economies in transition. Perception of petroleum as a finite, non-renewable resource and the attendant public interest dimension embedded in the contractual arrangements for its exploitation makes the petroleum industry a highly regulated and historically popular area of state intervention. Petroleum contracts are also vulnerable to various kinds of change of circumstances, which can disturb the economic equilibrium of contracts. Stability mechanisms in legal, contractual and economic forms are needed to counter these political, fiscal and commercial risks in petroleum contracts. The study observes that over the last two decades, the fierce competition among the developing countries and economies in transition for attracting foreign investment in natural resources exploration and the end of their radical nationalistic feelings and hostile attitude towards foreign investment have persuaded them to provide favourable conditions in petroleum contracts for the petroleum companies. The study finds that the petroleum contracts in these countries during this period have been marked by increased stability guarantees, greater flexibility in fiscal terms and increased efforts of the parties to make provisions for renegotiation and adaptation of the contract in changing circumstances to maintain stability in the contract and to attract foreign investment in petroleum projects. The growing concerns about negative environmental impact and consequently regulatory and liability risks by the host states have appeared as a significant political risk factor to the petroleum companies. Similarly, host communities' hostile actions spurred by negative social impact of petroleum operations and human rights violations at various stages of petroleum development can pose a threat to stability and to the economic viability of petroleum projects. The study emphasises that integration of environmental and social concerns in petroleum development, assessment of environmental and social impacts, consultation with key stakeholders in the project design and implementation, equitable distribution of economic benefits from the project, respect for human rights of the host community in petroleum exploitation are all seen as key issues to be addressed in order to reduce negative impacts from project, and to enhance stability of the projects. A clearly defined role for the government and company in the area of social responsibility is needed to reduce much of the uncertainty about the allocation of responsibilities that they should undertake.

This thesis deals with the correlative markers d’une part… d’autre part, d’un côté… de l’autre and non seulement… mais in French and their Swedish counterparts dels… dels, å ena sidan… å andra sidan and inte bara… utan. These markers are composed of two separate parts generally occurring together, and announce a serial of at least two textual units to be considered together. The analyses of the use of these three French and three Swedish markers are based upon two corpora of non-academic humanities texts. The first, principal corpus, is composed only of original French and Swedish texts. The second, complementary corpus, is composed of source texts in the two languages and their translations in the other language. By the combination of these two corpora, this study is comparative as well as contrastive. Through application of the Geneva model of discourse analysis and the Rhetorical Structure Theory, a semantic and functional approach to correlative markers and their text-structural role is adopted. The study shows similarities as well as differences between the six markers, both within each language and between the languages. D’une part… d’autre part and dels… dels principally mark a conjunctive relation, whereas d’un côté… de l’autre and å ena sidan… å andra sidan more often are used in  a contrastive relation, even though they all can be used for both kinds of relations. Non seulement… mais and inte bara… utan mark a conjunctive relation, but can also indicate that the second argument is stronger than the first one. By the use of these two markers, the language users also present the first one as given and the second one as new information. In general, the French correlative markers appear to have a more argumentative function, whereas the text-structural function is demonstrated to be the most important in Swedish.

Entitled “Analysis of semiotic situations in informational documents within the company: focus on some EDF (Electricité de France) communication documents”, this doctorate research thesis is a study which particularly concerns the field of Practical Semiotics. A communicative production can be regarded as a Practice (in this case, a language act, a discourse whose aim is to provoke an action or a reaction in the addressees). It is actually provided with a heterogeneous configuration that includes a set of elements necessary for the production and interpretation of its meaning. The aim of our study is to analyze this configuration also called Semiotic Situation, and to highlight the most relevant aspects that can be observed in two levels or scenes: predicative and strategies scenes. We specifically focused on the following strategies: selection, adaptation, adjustment, coordination and programmed organization of Practice elements. The analysis focused particularly on some communication documents of EDF Group. This is an external institutional communication. Situated between semiotics of images and institutional semiotics, this thesis can also be considered as a semiotic study of a means of communication. The theme was on dismantling nuclear power plants, management and processing of radioactive waste, environmental commitments, new products, activities and services of EDF. This whole topic is related to the production and marketing of electricity (energy) and the issues they raise. The corpus under study made up of non confidential documents at the reach of the general public is divided into two parts: we have firstly some paper documents, and secondly, we have electronic documents (EDF website graphical interfaces which contain two video sequences). In line with our research, we carried out analysis and meditations with the aim of knowing what significant structures mobilize the act of communication that make up the corpus under study. This corpus as a Practice contains strategic organisation and adjustments found on several levels amongst which are material and sensitive properties, enunciative and the rhetorical-argumentative styles. Our research focused on three main parts. The first is a presentation of the target company and the specification of the communication context of the corpus. After presenting the company EDF and discussing the concept of energy, the different sources of electricity generated by EDF, we looked at the economic, competitive, social and safety issues that the company must consider. The second part gave an analytical semiotic description of the corpus. This was also the part where we discussed the components of external communication which belongs corpus. The third part is divided into three chapters that analyze the semiotic and rhetorical-argumentative concepts used. An analysis of Semiotic Situation requires a singular examination of syncretic, enunciative and rhetorical aspects. This thesis reveals crucial elements in the production and interpretation of meaning in of a communication act. It contributes to the understanding and improvement of communicative efficiency. It is a model of applied semiotics

Invandrade kvinnor i Handels. Föreställningar om arbetskraftsinvandrade kvinnor i Handelsnytt 1961-1976. (Immigrant women in Handels. Conceptions of labour immigrated women in Handelsnytt 1961-1976). The primary purpose of this thesis is to analyze the written conceptions of labour immigrated women in Handelsnytt, a Swedish Trade Union magazine. The analyses of the conceptions are based on theoretical categories of class, gender and ethnicity. The purpose is to examine how labour immigrated women, as members of the Union, Handelsanställdas förbund, were perceived and how the conceptions of them were expressed through these categories. The time period of the study is based on Yvonne Hirdman´s gender contract- The Equality contract, it was a time period when labour immigration peaked and later on attenuated. And also a time when women in Sweden begun to work outside of home in a wider extent than before. The study also means to explore power relations and subordination of the given categories and how these integrate and enhance each other.   The results demonstrate a significance absence of articles, features and overall coverage of immigrated women in Handelsnytt. The small amounts of articles about or for immigrated workers tend to leave the immigrated woman unseen.  The immigrant workers are rarely individually described; they are mostly defined as a sexless group or as a man. If the lack of recognition may be explained by limited membership of female immigrated workers could be one answer, but not entirely satisfying. Even though the trade industry was dependable on its workers language knowledge, which is a large part of the rhetoric inflicting the immigrant articles, it may not mean there were no female immigrant workers in this industry. However the results cannot with certainty claim it to be either way, not the lack of female members or as a proof of the domination of male rhetoric within the trade union-Handels.

In early 1971, a year before he abandoned the art world, the American art dealer and independent curator Seth Siegelaub (1941-2013) published The Artist’s Reserved Rights Transfer and Sale Agreement (ARRTSA) in New York. Its stated aim was to change the power relations on the art market more in favor of the artists. This study departs from the observation that despite being a seemingly ideal way to assert artist’s rights, ARRTSA has only been used by a few artists. While the reason for this reluctance has not been sufficiently researched, my study also shows that there is a lack of academic work that considers this area of research in art history. In order to shed light on this field I am using Fairclough’s theory and by applying his dialectical method of Critical Discourse Analysis, I examine the discourses in which ARRTSA is included as a particular discourse and event. The analysis of Siegelaub’s practice and position in combination with a close linguistic analysis of his introductory text highlights aspects and dimensions that have been previously occluded or under- acknowledged. The result of the analysis shows that the discourse stresses solidarity, insistence and consistency for artists and makes a moral appeal to collectors, but the text also reproduces the idiosyncratic energy and ambiguities that was surrounding his driven persona. I argue that despite all the purported benefits of ARRTSA, artists are instilled with a sense of uncertainty and risk, because it becomes apparent how informal and unregulated the art world is and how the art market-logic yields more power than the artist. Hence, the idea of pursuing artist’s rights through the use of written agreements remains largely unexplored.

In this thesis dedicated to concession in modern Russian we specified the concept by means of a prototypical schema which we applied to classify different types of concessive constructions. This schema aims at embracing the majority of sentences marked as concessive. The main mark of the proposed schema (p, C q), based on the idea of contrast between the implications of p and q contents, assessments of these contents or p and q speech acts, is the connective C, a concessive conjunction or preposition. We studied concessive relations in both complex sentences and simple sentences. They are classified according to the epistemic status of q and subdivided into non-Conditional, conditional and counterfactual. The second criterion of classification is the single or multiple status of q. According to it we have, on the one hand, non-Generalized concessive constructions and, on the other, generalized concessive constructions. Outstepping the traditional research, we made a point of studying illocutionary concession as part of the whole. Indeed, xotja in discourse is used by the speaker as a self-Correction technique in order to reject the previous utterance pointing thus the deviation of their thought. As a result of our research we come to the conclusion that concession has multiple forms and cannot be reduced to inoperant causality. Due to a wider research scope we managed to bridge the linguistic and rhetoric concessions and to give a broader view of different forms of concessive relations in modern Russian

A distinction is here introduced into restrictive, hedgy understatementR and emphatic understatementE, which are traced in historical data via the metalinguistic and the form-to-function approach. The metalinguistic approach found the modern sense of understatementE with examples from mostly more formal, written registers, while understatementR could hardly be found in works on rhetoric and etiquette. In contrast, understatementR was generally more prominent in the instances found with the corpus linguistic form-to-function approach, based on negation, a bit of a and a N or two, although understatements made up only a tiny fraction of those constructions’ uses. UnderstatementE could be attested from Middle English onwards, while understatementR appeared later, with both becoming more common after 1800, pointing to late British preference for this speech style.

Abstract This chapter explores the rhetoric in Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. It contrasts his invocation of “prophecy” as a form of theorizing to contemporary interpretations of prophecy (and of his work) as engaging in acts of prediction we can confirm or invalidate. It traces the rhetorical impact and political implications of the three narratives by which he analyzes the gifts and dangers of “democracy” and democracy “in America.” It elaborates his interpretation of American political rhetoric as a dangerous, inflated “poetry” that will only augment “democratic despotism” at the expense of political freedom. It unpacks the gendered and racial assumptions fueling his anxieties, analysis, rhetoric, and prescriptions. In these terms, this chapter emphasizes the profound resonance of his work for theorizing contemporary political life.

Chapter 4 turns from following the long and varied tradition of stylistic teaching and practice to dedicated theory: now the reception of Aristotle’s Rhetoric and especially its analytic of the emotions from antiquity to the late thirteenth century. This chapter treats pathos and enthymeme in Aristotle’s Rhetoric. It contrasts other ancient philosophical traditions of the passions with Aristotle’s phenomenological treatment of emotion in the Rhetoric. It traces the post-classical reception of the Rhetoric through medieval Arabic commentators on the emotions, Moerbeke’s authoritative Latin translation, Giles of Rome’s important commentary on the Rhetoric, c.1272, and other scholastic commentators on the relevant sections of Aristotle’s text. It also contrasts other medieval philosophies of the passions with what readers would have found in Aristotle’s Rhetoric. In his first engagement with the Rhetoric, Giles did not grasp the political significance of Aristotle’s treatment of emotions because his thinking was still embedded in contemporary medieval theories of the passions.

This chapter examines Turner’s war rhetoric by examining his rhetoric during the Civil War and contrasts it with his rhetoric during the Spanish-American and Cuban wars. Grounded in his prophetic pessimism, Turner’s rhetoric not only shifts, but in his critiques of the government and his outright denunciations of African Americans who support the war, the chapter argues that Turner creates his own anti-war rhetoric that anticipates the contemporary anti-war rhetoric of many African Americans.

The epilogue to this book sketches out the story of public speaking and rhetoric in Russia from the 1930s to the early twenty-first century. It compares and contrasts the rhetorical styles of several leaders: Nikita Khrushchev, who led the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964; Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary from 1964 to 1982; Mikhail Gorbachev, who led the Soviet Union from 1985 to its dissolution in 1991; and finally Vladimir Putin, the current president of Russia. It discusses wider norms of public speaking in the later Soviet period, especially in advice literature on ‘cultured speech’. The epilogue also briefly assesses the implications of the audiovisual media for public speech.

Abstract This chapter contrasts Xuedou’s 100 Odes with Fenyang’s songgu collection by examining several comparable poems; it then presents an approach to reading and deciphering the Odes by considering three interrelated rhetorical aspects of the construction of the songgu, with each section of the chapter accompanied by a table illustrating how the key theme can be examined for all one hundred cases. The first aspect concerns how the gong’an selected by Xuedou are cited from previous Chan texts, particularly transmission of the lamp records published in the early Northern Song. The second element refers to the irregular meter embedded in many odes that shows the author’s distinctive approach to merging literature with didactic discourse. The third and most important element involves a method for understanding the allusive and intrusive qualities of Xuedou’s fundamentally instructive rhetoric.

The paper presents a corpus study of the discourse features in the corpus of blogs. It is based on the data of Ru-RSTreebank annotated within the framework of the Rhetorical Structure theory [Mann, Thompson 1988]. The Ru-RSTreebank represents genres of news and popular science, scientific papers, and blogs texts. Blog subcorpus contains such topics as travelling, cosmetics, sports and health, psychology, IT and tech and some others. Blogs texts constitute a specific genre as they combine properties of written and spoken discourse. The purpose of the paper is to investigate discourse features of blogs in comparison with other genres. We analyze the variation in rhetoric relations distribution among genres, and single out the differences in discourse connectives usage. Furthermore, we check the distribution of other discourse features reported in different studies for spoken discourse and for social media in the Ru-RSTreebank blogs subcorpus. The general frequency analysis and the experiments on RandomForest classifier application to genre recognition have shown that the most important rhetoric relations specific to blogs are Evaluation and Contrast, that there is a tendency to use shorter discourse units and not to express the discourse relations overtly via subordinative conjunctions.

Chat Conversations are now used for different purposes including the " Computer -Supported Collaborative Learning " (CSCL). In their analysis it is very important to identify the discourse threads and the rhetorical structures. In this paper we present an application for graphical visualization of rhetorical structures in chats. This software tool provides structured visualization and analysis of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning chats. In our application, we first use the implemented tools that are based on the ideas of Mikhail Bakhtin's dialog theory and Stefan Trausan-Matu's polyphonic model in order to analyze the chats and identify their topics and discussion threads (repeated words). In addition we identify cue phrases that are used in order to detect rhetorical schemata. As a result we determine the rhetorical relations for each one of the identified cue phrases (Conclusion, Contrast, Extending, Sequence, Explanation, etc), so that the graphics are representing the links between the threads and the cue phrases. The resulting links are differentiated by colors for easing to detect the rhetorical relation between threads. Furthermore we visualize the links between threads with cue phrases that are important for CSCL in order to analyze the involvement of students in the chat, as well as their ability to track threads into the conversation and the extent the coherence among themselves. Additionally, we shall study graphics from the application in order to generate feedback for students. We will notice that the application analyzes various chats from the K-Teams laboratory of University of Politehnica in Bucharest.

Certain characteristics specific for typeface design initiate different impressions on observers, but here arises a research problem where we cannot identify what specific or universal characteristics of the typeface initiate the impressions on certain attributes. A common problem encountered in previous researches is that fonts may vary in many variables and at the same time differ in width, weight, contrast, and structure. Therefore, it is difficult to determine and isolate which universal and specific characteristics of the typeface affect the impression. The subject of this paper is the isolation of the weight variable and the investigation of its relationship with typeface personality attributes. The main goal of this paper is to provide empirical support for theoretical assumptions, building on previous researches on the typeface personality and typographic rhetoric to show how specific typographic characteristics influence the experience of writing itself.

We extend the concept of a discourse tree (DT) in the discourse representation of text towards data of various forms and natures. The communicative DT to include speech act theory, extended DT to ascend to the level of multiple documents, entity DT to track how discourse covers various entities were defined previously in computational linguistics, we now proceed to the next level of abstraction and formalize discourse of not only text and textual documents but also various kinds of accompanying data. We call such discourse representation Multimodal Discourse Trees (MMDTs). The rational for that is that the same rhetorical relations that hold between text fragments also hold between data values, sets and records, such as Reason, Cause, Enablement, Contrast, Temporal sequence. MMDTs are evaluated with respect to the accuracy of recognition of criminal cases when both text and data records are available. MMDTs are shown to contribute significantly to the recognition accuracy in cases where just keywords and syntactic signals are insufficient for classification and discourse-level information needs to be involved.

sufficient amount of foreign research literature has been devoted to the study of such a political phenomenon as euroscepticism; recently, interest in it among the Russian scientific community has intensified due to the strengthening of its positions in the EU countries. Italy after the elections of March 4, 2018 turned into a “show-window” of the success of euroscepticism and populism. The purpose of this article is to determine the sustainability of the new government. The author identifies the causes of the weakening of the position of the Democratic Party in Italy, the coming to power of radical parties, whose leadership until recently was not taken seriously among the EU political establishment. The paper also analyzes the main concepts of the program called “Contract for the government of change” and the prospects for its implementation. To solve these tasks, a historical and chronological method was used, which allowed to track the stages of weakening popular support for traditional parties and the growing popularity of euro skeptics. The research was also used the theoretical research method as an analysis to determine the future prospects of the government in domestic and foreign policy. The author comes to the conclusion that in the coming years Italy will become the leader of all eurosceptic forces with the prospect of creating and heading a similar faction in the European Parliament in May 2019. The conclusion is also formed that the Government’s attitude to cancel anti-Russian sanctions should not be considered too optimistic. Analyzing the declining rhetoric of the Italian leadership on this issue, the author assumes that the Russian issue is just a bargaining chip in knocking out EU preferences on fiscal and migration issues
