Some aspects of the revitalization of the 14th century historical building are presented in the paper. The building was originally used as a poorhouse and a hospital for children. The original Gothic masonry building on the site was a two-storey building with a cellar, situated in a corner of two streets. In the middle of the 19th century the building was converted into a school and then the first large-scale demolition of the hospital’s Gothic walls took place. After the 2nd World War a school was also situated in the building, where it existed until the late nineties. The aim of the renovation process was to convert it into an exclusive office block. The design works were preceded by historical research and on-site investigations. Complex conversion of the object consisted in the reconstruction of the old building structure, creating the inner courtyard and covering it with a glass roof. In the existing part of the basement one of the longest single-nave vaults in Poland and the exquisite roof truss system with a lying bidding-rafter post deserved special attention during the renovation.

In 2006, the town council of Slany decided to respond to the new trend of regional policy in the Central Bohemia region and focused on the revitalization of the historic core of the town. The large-scale project was assigned to a team of professionals (teachers and graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague), led by Professor Sykora. Team members are to deal with issues of historical centre. The project presented a challenge to test theory, principles and procedures in practical design. The projected area featured Masaryk Square and 22 adjacent streets defined by the existing town walls. The reconstruction project of Vinarickeho Street was the first part of the overall project of revitalization of the historic core of the town chosen to implement. This reconstruction was one of the most technically, organizationally and financially complex works that have been undertaken in Slany recently. Construction started in November 2010 and lasted one year. Although this is a project of smaller scope, thanks to its complexity, sensitive approach and craftsmanship it brought the creators the price Construction of the Year 2012 in the Central Bohemia region and advanced to the second round in the competition Construction of the Year 2012 in Czech Republic.

The phenomenon of suburbanization has contributed significantly to the decline of many larger urban centers in many countries. As a result, many cities have experienced deterioration of infrastructure, a climate of disinvestment, and other consequences such as population losses, high rates of unemployment, increased poverty rates, fiscal distress, housing and neighborhood deterioration, and a negative image. In response to the impact of suburban expansion, public and private sector entities have implemented downtown revitalization programs intended to attract more people and restore diverse socio-economic, historic, and cultural functions to the core. The city of Indianapolis, like many others, has been involved in revitalizing its downtown city core to reverse the decline that took place following the World War II. Using a partnership of a proactive city government, strong neighborhoods, good public services and concerned private corporations they came together with one goal in mind: to restore a critical element of the city that being a regional shopping center in downtown core. This creative project researches the history of the mall and evaluates its present attributes and liabilities. It also offers possible strategies of using the Circle Centre Mall as a part of a balanced downtown urban system specific to its core. Lastly, this study will present some of the possible strategies and solutions, which can be used to stimulate downtown, street-level businesses integrating Circle Centre Mall's positive impacts in the process. It also contains an analysis and discussion of other components of the downtown revitalization programs, including: economic benefits; downtown urban spaces; skyways systems; facilities connectors; and the decision-making process. From this analysis, conclusions will be drawn that present facts and solutions about keeping the positive impacts of the Circle Centre Mall co-existing with growth of other downtown businesses, specially at sidewalk level, thus supporting the overall activities of the downtown core.

This research aims to analyze the ways how the revitalization process of the Historical Center of João Pessoa/PB is linked to the sociospatial dynamics of this area, as well as the existing interaction among the elements of its present situation. On the same way, is part of our interest the identification of the kind of policies carried on by the State, together with the economic power constitutive representation. We defined the period between the 1980 years until nowadays as the scope of our work, looking forward the production and reproduction of the mentioned space. We also analyze the contradiction between the government official speech and its effective practice through the actions toward the revitalization process. Our research covers the community of Porto do Capim mobilization on face of governmental actions. We identify that, these urban interaction process directly affects the life of the local dwellers, considering that these people are the historical dwellers haring their way of life, activities and feeling of affection for the Historical Center. We see their permanence in that place as an affirmation of their meaning of life and identity with the place, so that the action in favor of their patrimonial status can be interpreted as a movement of resistance to the demands of expansion of the capitalistic system in our country (Recife Antigo/PE, Pelourinho/Salvador/BA, Centro Dragão do Mar/CE). In order to do this work we rely on academic issues about the Brazilian and international experiences over the cities historical background. The experimental phase was developed within the Bairro Vardouro and the community Porto do Capim, Vila Nassau and Frei Vital. According to the methodology we had a day by day visited and conversation to the old and business people, as well as the housekeepers living in the area Taking part of their cultural religious events gave us the opportunity to improve our understanding about the community values and habits. Moust of information were collected from the Comissão Permanente de Desenvolvimento do Centro Histórico de João Pessoa, the Biblioteca do Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional and of the Coordenadoria do Patrimônio Cultural de João Pessoa. Therefore, weve chosen the qualitative research as the method for this work. The methodological sources were: half structured interviews with technicians and studious of the urban question, former dwellers of the Centro Historical, the Comissão de Mulheres do Porto do Capim and the other representatives of the community. Moreover, weve been using the observation and analytical description of the study area . We focus on structural elements such are: the memory, the tradition, the feeling of belonginess and the cultural patrimony. We interpreted the use of this space by the government together with the business enterprises, representing the finance capital interests, as an available geographic area good for investments and activities concerning to the reproduction of the Capital on the evidence that the control of this space keeps its importance, even if its functionalities were change along the time as well as the agents who are in charge on this control. On the other side, is important to detach that the cultural practices and the people day-to-day, which are inherent to the way of life in the Porto do Capim, Vila Nassau and Frei Vital, represent the inhabitants resistance to the changes brought about by the revitalization process.

The urban renewal is the inevitable product during the urban development process. Chongqing has been carrying out a serious of reconstruction and urban revitalization during these years, and the SHI-BA-TI area is included in the process. SHI-BA-TI area is one of the most famous sight-spots of Chongqing which represents the traditional culture spirit of the city. So that the high-valuable culture features of the site should be reserved in the reconstruction project and expressed in new way with creative method. The concept of my design is reserving the “old core and skin” while adding in the “new core and skin”. This reconstruction design achieved the objective that reserving the historic and cultural core of the site while adding some urban public functions upon the site, which makes the site correspond to the land value of the city center and help with enhancing the status and image of the city center.

ABSTRACT:This project focuses in the town of Pataias and has the goal of looking into the social, cultural and urban context of this place. The proposal, located in it’s intervention area, embodies the activities and the buildings already present, while taking into account the historical and geographical framework. For this proposal to comply with the pre-determined guidelines, it was required to understand some concepts, while understanding the way how culture influences society, introducing, in the intervention area, new preservation and appreciation methods. When a project aims to intervene in a small scale urban environment, the social development should be a priority, while also being necessary to observe, analise and catalog the information in a way to distinguish the collective identity component. With the principal concepts laid down, the local culture has ultimately had an influence int the projectual path chosen for this work. The intergenerational and multifunctional centre aims to give its inhabitants, and the broad public of Pataias, a place of culture, of study, of personal knowledge and collectivism.

The paper deals with the experience of Czech cities with the revitalization of urban centres. The aim of the article is to find out how cities approach revitalization, what problems they solve and how satisfied they are with the state support. It is based on a representative questionnaire survey of municipalities (114 cities were interviewed, i.e. 28.6% of all cities). The research has shown that the most important problems of urban centres today include the quality of public spaces, transport infrastructure and mobility, and last but not least, the care for cultural heritage. Together with property owners, municipalities consider themselves to be the main actor (initiator and leader) of revitalization. The implementation of revitalization strategies in practice encounters a number of conflicts, especially between transport and the environment, between monument care and business, and between the interests of residents, entrepreneurs and tourists. Most cities evaluate the results of the revitalization of urban centres positively and perceive them as essential for the overall development of the city. More than half of the cities expressed dissatisfaction with a state support. Above all, they miss comprehensive support programs, enabling financing not only the revitalization of physical structures, but also measures to increase the attractiveness and attract new residents and visitors.

This negletc state produces a serious problem related to a wider phenomenon of abandonment of entire portions of italian territories. Realities that differ form the city because of their morphology: Does urban shape represent an urban limit? or is it an alternative testimony to the city? Research purpose is to understand how relationship, between these cases and the territory, works; in particular during the absence of the main component: the human one. The case study Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an ancient village in the center of Italy, inhabited until 90's, shows how the examination of urban shape represents the potentiality of his own revitalization. By relating his historical identity to the scattered hotel projectual approach, it contributes to combine conservation, valorization and sustainability of the existing building fabric, in order to claim the authenticity of these villages declaring their own autonomy and dimension to major urban centers polarization. In this example transformation is meant as conscious project that grow up from the built reality not from the project itself, transformation as knowledge of urban facts, tool to approach to the structure of this reality. Although sea bathing is a typical marine recreation, the annual number of people participating in sea bathing has drastically declined from 120 million people (i.e., equivalent to the total population of Japan) at its peak, to 20 million people. Similarly, the ownership of pleasure boats, which once peaked at 440,000, has been declining over the years. Marinas are particularly important for their function as centers of sport fishing, which is the second most popular marine recreation after sea bathing. There are about 520 marinas in Japan, of which about one quarter are public marinas. The rise and fall of public marinas greatly affects not just the decline of the user population but also the economic activity of the surrounding regions. The present study focused on public marinas, which hold central importance among marine recreational facilities. Measures for revitalizing public marinas are discussed from a comprehensive perspective.

Among the standard approaches concerning cultural heritage preservation, the architectural point of view deserves particular attention. The special place in medieval Serbian history of architecture belongs to the world famous monastery complexes Studenica, Dečani and Gračanica. Beside them numerous significant monuments (churches and monasteries) exist as witnesses of the national testimony, currently in the state of ruins, archaeological sites, or damaged ones. A lot of them have adequate needs for revitalisation, where the start point is engineering documentation. The focus of the research is on the role of specific geometric and engineering graphics tasks when these areas are concerning. Monastery church devoted to Introduction of Holy Theotokos in village Slavkovica (near town Ljig), with three old sarcophaguses, dated back to 15th century, is presented and analysed from several aspects:measuring, architectural style characteristics - geometric design, 3D modelling (classical-CAD and terrestrial photogrammetric) with visualization and presentation. The attention was paid on preservation of authentic architectural style and medieval building techniques, which allow imperfections in realization. The opinion of experienced scientists and specialists involved in all the phases of monument's revitalisation has been followed as a guideline to the final result – a proposed geometric design of the revitalised church in Slavkovica.

HEFNER, Robert. IHSAN ETHICS AND POLITICAL REVITALIZATION Appreciating Muqtedar Khan’s Islam and Good Governance. IIIT, Oktober 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47816/01.001.20.

Annotation:
Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).
