The two major purposes of this study were: (1) to evaluate Resource Utilization Groups (RUGs III) as a unified method for classifying all residential, chronic care and rehabilitation patients at the St. Joseph's Health Centre, London, and (2) to compare the potential funding implications of RUGs and other patient/resident classification systems. RUGs were used to classify a total of 336 patients/residents in residential, extended care, chronic care and rehabilitation beds at the Health Centre. Patients were also concurrently classified according to the Alberta Long Term Care Classification System and the Medicus Long Term Care System. Results show that RUGs provide relatively more credit for higher acuity patients than do the Alberta or Medicus systems. If used as a basis for funding, chronic care and rehabilitation hospitals would be entitled to more funding (relative to residential/nursing homes) under RUGs than under the other two patient classification mechanisms.

Research on residential care has been well established in the literature. Nonetheless, research drawing from the actual experiences of adolescents is relatively scarce. A qualitative study was designed highlighting the voices of children, analysing their fostering experience, interpersonal relationships, their participation in daily decisions, and future aspirations. The sample included 33 early adolescents in residential care aged 12–14 in Portugal (n = 17) and Spain (n = 16). Results showed that there was agreement in terms of the importance given to education, their satisfaction with the material conditions of residential centre, and their dissatisfaction concerning matters of individuality, autonomy, participation, and socialization.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual framework on the key determinant of psychosocial adjustments in terms of behavior, social, emotion and mental health among abused children in residential care. Methodology – This research is designed as a qualitative study approach. Case study method is used to explore primer data which emphasis on psychosocial adjustments and narrative data from the perspective of children living in residential care. Research participants consist of children living in welfare care in Perlis, Malaysia and the respective staffs. Findings – Chronic abuse will leave harmful effects on various aspects of the children’s development. Abuse will also affect one’s emotional wellness and balance which will further impact the psychosocial stability of an individual in adulthood. Most victims will not be able to develop a sense of belonging and necessary social skills which eventually will lead to these individuals not being able to socialize in the real life situations. Therefore the placements of these children in a safe environment so as to ensure better care and protection must be given proper attention. The transition of caregivers from parents to the welfare centre will affect these chindren too. They need time to build trust and relationship so that they can feel comfortable to share their experiences and also emotions. Caregivers in the institutions are the main elements in ensuring the quality and effectiveness of educational programmes of the centres. Practical Implications – Rehabilitation programme is needed to balance the children’s needs based on age and ability to give the residents chances to practice skills and also learn to adapt to the outside world. Social Implications – The institutions should provide condusive life experiences as they have a large impact to the success of the rehabilitation process. In addition, good quality services in fulfilling the children’s need will assure healthy development of the children and their ability to adapt well to the outside world

The DEMoBinc study's main objective is to develop an instrument for assessing the living conditions, the quality of care, and the human rights of long-term mentally ill patients in psychiatric and social residential care. It started on March 2007, with 11 centres and 10 countries participating. The Portuguese centre has carried out a national literature review of mental health legislation, standards of care related with residential care for mental patients, and mandatory procedures for physical restraint and seclusion.A three-round Delphi exercise with four groups of experts - advocates, mental health professionals, service users, and carers - was also developed. In the first round the participants were asked to state the ten more important components of care helping recovery in institutional care for the long-term mentally ill. The results were sent back to be rated for their importance on a 5-point scale. Finally, the participants were asked to confirm or change their own scores in comparison with the calculated group median. Between twelve and 18 participants by group were contacted, and the overall rate of participation was 73%.A pilot study using the first draft of the DEMoBinc instrument was done, and refinement of the instrument is being carried out in twenty institutions and will be completed during the next months. The results of the Portuguese centre on the national literature review, the Delphi exercise, and the first phase refinement of the DEMoBinc instrument will be presented and discussed.

In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on placing children in foster care. Our main research aims to explore the connections between the future orientation of disadvantaged young people living in residential care homes and foster families. In our pilot-study, we made it measurable by a comparative analysis of their study results. The sample consists of children raised in the child protection specialist and aftercare system of the Greek Catholic Child Protection Centre of Debrecen and Nyírség. The comparative analysis included 57 children and young people living in residential care homes and 57 children and young adults living in foster care. The members of both groups were born between 1993 and 2003, so are 15-25-year-olds. The comparative analysis was made on the basis of the available documents and study statistics between June 2019 and November 2019, to measure and compare the academic achievement of young people living in residential care homes and with foster parents. According to the statistical analysis, it was found that the academic achievement, based on year repetitions, show a more favourable picture of students living with foster parents. Depending on our results, a number of additional research questions arise.

There is considerable research on work satisfaction and stress of care staff on the one hand and on quality of care and well-being of older people on the other. However, very little research in continuing-care settings for older people (nursing homes, residential homes and long-stay wards) links perceptions of workers (work satisfaction and stress) with the process of care (quality of care) and outcomes for residents/patients (well-being). This is a notable omission, given the emphasis of government policy on improving quality of health and social care services for vulnerable elderly people in the UK. The White Papers, The New NHS and Modernising Social Services and the National Priority Guidance for Health and Social Services for 2000–2003, all emphasize the importance of services that are responsive to local needs and which maintain and promote independence. The Centre for Policy on Ageing has been commissioned by the Department of Health to develop national standards for nursing and residential home care services for older people. This work will build upon recommendations of the Burgner Report and Achieving a Better Home Life, which identified areas for benchmarking. The national standards proposed under the forthcoming National Service Framework for Older People will underpin new legislation to regulate care services.

This study explores the experiences of young orphans who transition into extended families in Zimbabwe, focusing on the five- to ten-year-old age group. The study embraced a qualitative approach which is situated within the interpretivist paradigm. The choice of the qualitative mode of inquiry was to ensure that the researcher interacted with participants who were remarkably close to young orphans and, henceforth, gather as much reliable and pertinent data as possible. A multiple case study design was employed to investigate five extended family members and their five to ten-year-old young orphans, one social worker and two residential care centre administrators. All five extended families with young orphans lived in the Mutoko, Murewa, Mudzi and Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) districts. Data were gathered through interviews, drawings, narratives, and observations. The preference for the research methods were to necessitate a high level of trustworthiness and comprehensive data. The study established that although the government is mandated to provide services in the transitioning of young orphans into extended families in Zimbabwe, lack of resources inhibit efforts to support these children. Due to lack of funds social workers seldom follow up on young orphans. Although Zimbabwe has well stipulated national, regional and international agreements in its archives on transition, this research study had established that the strained Zimbabwean economy had a negative effect on children who transitioned into extended families. The situation is exacerbated by the fact that extended family members are inadequately prepared and trained to handle young orphans who transition into their families. Furthermore, extended families also face challenges on the scarcity of resources to support young orphans. Young orphans were further challenged by the fact that people stereotyped them because they came from residential care centres. These young orphans also faced several psychological challenges. The study concluded that both young orphans and extended families are victims of a system that does not have the resources, nor the political and social will to support the transition process. Based on these findings, the recommendations were made for the attention of the government of Zimbabwe, as well as the Department of Social Welfare, who act as executive body in implementing Government’s directives. The study therefore, upholds that extended family members should have relevant skills to enable them to appropriately deal with young orphans. The study further recommends the implementation of policies to take cognisance of the needs of young orphans who transition to extended families are taken on board, as they access appropriate services and resources to mitigate their impediments.

Child and Youth Care Workers employed in residential Child and Youth Care Centres are often challenged by the behaviour of children in their care. The goal of the study was therefore to explore and describe the challenges faced by Child and Youth Care Workers with regard to the discipline of children with challenging behaviour in Child and Youth Care Centres. A qualitative research approach employing explorative, descriptive and contextual designs were followed. Participants were selected by means of purposive sampling from four Child and Youth Care Centres from four different metropoles in the Cape Peninsula. Data was collected by means of focus groups with the aid of an interview schedule. The interviews were be recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data was analysed according to Tesch (in Creswell, 2003) eight steps of data analysis. Ethical considerations such as informed consent, confidentiality and debriefing were adhered to. The findings of the study pointed inter alia to the fact that CYCWs are the first line disciplinarians that they need more support with regards to the discipline of children from colleagues, management and social workers. Multi-disciplinary in CYCCs teams tend to be ineffective and they experience disempowerment from the management and social workers. In addition, they are challenged by the behaviour of children in their care, such as truancy, stealing, absconding, aggressiveness, inappropriate sexual behaviour, development problems. Recommendations for all the stakeholders in the field of CYC were made to improve service delivery.

The overall aim of the study was to explore factors that could be associated with criminal behaviour of youth offenders diverted in the life skills residential diversion programmes at Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre, so as to contribute towards a better understanding of their profile. Therefore the study explored the participants' family backgrounds, the circumstances surrounding the committal of their offences and their responses to the offences they were diverted for in the life skills diversion programmes. An exploratory-descriptive type of a qualitative design was adopted in this study. A semistructured interview schedule was used as the research instrument for conducting in-depth face-to-face interviews with the participants. The study had one set of target population; who were 18 youth offenders (both male and female) between the ages 14-17 attending life skills residential diversion programmes at Walter Sisulu Child and Youth Care Centre. The profile of the participants seem to indicate that most of them had absent fathers and therefore lacked male figures who could act as role models. The study found that biological fathers of most participants were either deceased, whereabouts unknown, not involved in their financial maintenance or those who had stepfathers, had a bad relationship with them. The findings indicated that the participants' mothers were unavailable and therefore most participants were taken care of by their grandmothers. However, it seems most grandmothers often failed to supervise their grandchildren properly and as such it created an opportunity for the participants to be mischievous with no consequences for their behaviour. It was also found that violence in the family also contributed significantly to the aggressive criminal offences of some of the participants. Lastly, the study showed that the influence of drugs and negative peer pressure also played a significant role in the participants' involvement in criminal behaviour.

Annotation:
Purpose: The movement away from task-oriented care toward the consistent provision of person-centred care (i.e., care based on residents??? needs and preferences) is widely recognized as the goal of the residential care culture change movement. The purpose of this study was to explore why the attainment of this goal has remained elusive for many residential care facilities (RCFs), despite significant effort to alter practice. Methods: I conducted an institutional ethnography to explore the textually mediated work processes that influence the day-to-day work practices of front-line care staff in RCFs. The social organization of RCFs was explored through the observation of resident care attendants??? (RCAs') practices and the interaction of those practices with institutional texts. The data were derived from three RCFs and included 104 hours of naturalistic observation, 76 in-depth interviews, and document analysis. Results: Practical access to institutional texts containing care-related information was dependent on job classification. Regulated healthcare professionals (e.g., RNs) frequently accessed these texts to exchange information. Although RCAs provided 80% of the care to residents, in all sites studied, they lacked practical access to the institutional texts that contained important information relevant to the residents??? individualized care needs and preferences (e.g., assessments, care plans, social histories). The RCAs primarily received and shared information orally; however, the organizational systems in the facilities studied mandated the written exchange of information and did not formally support an oral exchange. Consequently, the oral exchange of care information was largely dependent upon the quality of the RCAs' working relationships with one another and especially with management. Implications: Access to detailed knowledge of residents??? needs and preferences is fundamental to the provision of person-centred care. The transfer of this knowledge to and between front-line care staff is dependent upon the quality of the relationships managers develop with and among RCAs. Initiatives aimed at building supportive and collaborative work teams are essential to the inclusion of RCAs in the care planning process and to the attainment of the goal of person-centred care.

Pietersen, Marisa. „Child care workers' management of sexualised behaviour displayed by children in residential child and youth care centres“. Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1644.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Children have been shown to respond differently to the hurt that they suffer at the hands of others. Some of these responses involve internalised behaviours (i.e., repression of feelings, bodily symptoms, etc.); whilst others hurt manifest as externalised behaviours, such as physical attacks on others. These may include sexualised behaviours. The latter is particularly common amongst (but not restricted to) children who have been sexually abused (The American Psychological Association, 2001). For the purposes of this study a distinction is made between developmentally appropriate sexual behaviour and non normative sexualised behaviour which evoke complaints from and discomfort in those involved in the behaviour. The manifestation of these sexualised behaviours is especially pronounced amongst children in institutional care; and hence, it calls for constructive and effective management by the child care workers who are primarily responsible for their safe care and behaviour modification whilst in the institution. This qualitative study – with an exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design – served to explore how the child care workers’ effective management of such behaviours could be enhanced, so that the emotional wellbeing of both the “offender” and the “perpetrator” of this behaviour can be promoted. A non-probability purposive sampling technique was employed to recruit research participants from three different child and youth care centres in Port Elizabeth. A total number of 10 research participants were involved and data was collected up to the point of data saturation. Thematic content analysis was utilised for the analysis of the data and the necessary strategies were employed to enhance the trustworthiness of the data and to meet all the ethical requirements of the study. The main findings alert to the key requirements of Child and Youth Care Workers; it confirms the occurrence of sexualised behaviours; the urgent need for a consistent approach to the management of such behaviours; and for enhanced team work between the helping professionals in the team. The value of the study is embedded in the contributions it can make to practical interventions for children in institutional care, and to the sparse body of knowledge in this area.

This study compared the ratings of self-efficacy and burnout by traditionally-trained direct care staff in a residential treatment center with ratings by a group of direct care staff that were trained to implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) with adults who have intellectual or developmental disabilities. Staff responses on measures of self-efficacy, using the Teacher’s Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) and burnout, using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) were compared across the two groups: One group of staff was not exposed to PBIS training (traditional training only), whereas the other group was trained to implement PBIS. A total of 70 direct care staff members from a Residential Treatment Center (RTC) participated in this study. The mean differences of total scores on each measure were compared using t-tests to determine if there were significant between-group differences. In addition, as the measure of self-efficacy was originally designed for use with teachers and was slightly modified here for use with direct care staff, an exploratory factor analysis was conducted to examine the factor structure of the measure when administered to staff in an RTC.

The results indicate that the modified TSES has one factor, which differs from the three factors found when the TSES was administered to teachers who were implementing PBIS in schools. Additionally, significant differences were found in staff members’ sense of self-efficacy between the control and PBIS groups. However, staff members’ degree of burnout were not significantly different. The results must be interpreted with caution because of the study’s small sample size. However, there are several implications for future research that are discussed to further examine the impact of implementing PBIS on direct care staff members in residential treatment settings.

This Thesis seeks to better understand the factors that shape the school experience of children in residential care and analyse how mentoring programmes can help enhance it. A series of three studies were designed in the context of a European social mentoring pilot project targeted at children in residential care and focused on their education improvement. Results showed that school satisfaction was an important component of the subjective well-being of children in residential care, and satisfactory relationships were highlighted as the strongest predictor of higher school satisfaction levels among these children. On the other hand, the findings indicated that by providing supportive, caring, trusting and steady relationships, mentoring programmes may create an opportunity for promoting the well-being and resilience of children in care as well as their social capital. Mentors also played a specific, unique and supplementary role within the existing network of supportive adults in residential care contexts.

The research work presents the explanation of a workshop held in a Residential Care Center whose objective was to define what a family is within a CAR, in order to make living more dynamic. The population with which they worked were children whose ages ranged from 9 to 12 years. The workshop was used as an instrument and an observation sheet that was created inside before carrying out the workshop. Among the results obtained, there was an improvement in the behavior of minors with respect to the way in which it was played. Another significant result was with respect to the students who went to school, since they now told how they had done in their day and not how they had behaved. Finally, with the completion of the workshop, it was concluded that it is important to carry out more studies of this type, since they allow us to learn about the dynamics of these institutionalized children.

AbstractThe book “Urban Socio-Economic Segregation and Income Inequality: a Global Perspective” investigates the link between income inequality and residential segregation between socio-economic groups in 24 large cities and their urban regions in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Author teams with in-depth local knowledge provide an extensive analysis of each case study city. Based on their findings, the main results of the book can be summarised as follows. Rising inequalities lead to rising levels of socio-economic segregation almost everywhere in the world. Levels of inequality and segregation are higher in cities in lower income countries, but the growth in inequality and segregation is faster in cities in high-income countries, which leads to a convergence of global trends. In many cities the workforce is professionalising, with an increasing share of the top socio-economic groups. In most cities the high-income workers are moving to the centre or to attractive coastal areas, and low-income workers are moving to the edges of the urban region. In some cities, mainly in lower income countries, high-income workers are also concentrating in out-of-centre enclaves or gated communities. The urban geography of inequality changes faster and is more pronounced than city-wide single-number segregation indices reveal. Taken together, these findings have resulted in the formulation of a Global Segregation Thesis.

AbstractAir quality has developed into a significant global issue and its negative effect on human health, wellbeing and ultimately the effect of shortening of life expectancy is becoming a pressing concern. Such concerns are most acute in cities in the UK. Although many cities, including Nottingham, are taking significant measures to enhance air quality, there was limited work focusing on the individual’s experience during commuting. This paper suggests a novel approach for measuring commuting air quality through quantifying particulate matters PM2.5 and PM10, using the city of Nottingham as a case study. Portable low-cost systems comprising of a GPS sensor and an Aeroqual pollution data logger were used to capture data and develop the sensor fusion via newly developed software. Data was collected from a variety of transport modes comprising bike, bus, car, tram and walking to provide evidence on relative particulate levels and 2D and 3D data maps were produced to communicate the relative pollution levels in a publicly accessible manner. The study found as expected particulate pollution to be higher during peak hours and typically closer to the city. However whilst the lowest particulate concentrations were found on the Tram the highest were for cyclists contrary to the literature. The project encompasses a democratic crowd sourced approach to data collection by enabling the public to gather data via their daily commute, increasing people’s awareness of the air quality in their locality. The acquired data permitted a range of comparisons considering differing times of day and zones such as the city centre and surrounding residential areas in the City council boundary.

In this paper, Winnicott argues that psychosis is an illness of a psychological nature, in some cases with a physical basis, which is concerned with the elements of human personality and existence. It is a term that includes schizophrenia, manic depression and melancholia with more or less paranoid complications. Winnicott argues that psychosis represents an organization of defences, and behind all organized defences is the threat of confusion, a breakdown of integration. Winnicott indicates there is acute need for preventive measures, especially in the provision of mental care for children, perhaps in a residential centre where children live indefinitely and could be taken for daily treatment by psycho-analysts. Winnicott proposes that psychosis proper indicates a disturbance of emotional development at an early stage. In some cases a hereditary tendency to psychosis is strong, whereas in others it is not a significant feature.

Children’s rights and needs are at the center of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, where education is viewed as crucial for providing the opportunities for sustainable, peaceful and equitable coexistence in a changing world. Alternative care settings are educational contexts (Tibollo, 2015) that deal with children in vulnerable conditions (UN General Assembly, 2010). For this reason, they can be considered as a sort of “field test” or “magnifying glass” on how the progress in striving to the implementation of the goals is proceeding – no one must be left behind. The 2020 global pandemic provoked an external shock to current socio-economic dimensions of sustainability. Education has been one of the most struck systems – let’s think of the 1,6 billion learners that have been affected by school closures (UNESCO, 2020). With this global framework in mind, the contribution aims at offering a pedagogical reflection on the impact the Covid-19 pandemic is having on children living in residential care centers (RCC). Worldwide, many RCCs, following the ongoing global pandemic, have been closed with the consequent return of children to their families of origin (CRIN, 2020). This process of deinstitutionalization, however, has not been overseen by rigorous monitoring, leading to increased risks of violence for children. This urges authorities to take carefully planned measures with respect to deinstitutionalisation in light of the COVID-19 pandemic (Goldman, et al., 2020). But Covid-19 is not only a health risk for children in RCCs. Because of the complex impact that the pandemic has had on the lives of children, on one side care responses are required, and on the other psycho-social and educational ones are also crucial (SOS Villaggi dei Bambini Onlus Italy; Save The Children, 2020). In Italy, for example, special guidelines have been drawn up to mitigate the spread of the virus within residential structures, that sometimes are overcrowded (Istituto superiore di sanità; SOS Villaggi dei Bambini Onlus Italia, 2020). In addition, tools have been provided to support the mental health of the children and adolescents that are deprived of opportunities for socialization given the closure of schools. In some cases they are isolated within the services themselves to mitigate the risk of the spread, causing a limitation in the possibility of seeing people outside the institution as their parents. Covid-19 underlines the urgency of promoting family-based alternative care for children. In particular, this paper aims to read through a pedagogical lens, the European scenario of residential services for children, to explore the impact of Covid-19 in these services; and to promote a family-based approach in alternative care preventing the risk of institutionalization in children welcomed.

The establishment of physic gardens (gardens particularly focused on plants with medicinal properties) dates back to the middle of the 16th century and generally had strong links with university medical schools (Bennett, 2014). Wyse Jackson in 1999 described botanic gardens as ‘institutions holding documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education’. In 2014, Bennet described the role of botanic gardens in university education as akin to learning in Paradise. By 2050 it is predicted that almost two thirds of the world’s population will live in an urban environment. This may have a huge impact on our ability to both experience and understand the natural world. Plants have a massive impact on the earth’s environment. This paper focuses on learning beyond the classroom in botanic & physic gardens and in industry settings using the annual Applied Plant Biology fieldcourse in UCC as a case study. The Applied Plant Biology residential fieldcourse has been running for the past five years (started in 2014) and takes place around Easter each year. I am the coordinator. It is a 5 day residential course for 3rd year Plant Science students. The learning outcomes of the fieldtrip state that; students should be able to discuss recent developments in industrial plant science research (facilitated in part by visits to a multinational (Syngenta) and smaller family owned companies (Tozers)); be able to explain worldwide plant conservation approaches and plant biodiversity in the context of different plant ecosystems and anthropogenic environmental impacts through engagement with such centers of excellence as Kew Botanic Gardens in London, Kew’s Millenium Seedbank Wakehurst in Sussex and the Chelsea Physic Garden in central London.

On September 11, 2001, the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center (WTC) in Lower Manhattan, New York City, also damaged the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corp.’s (PATH’s) busiest terminal serving the heart of the thriving downtown financial, commercial, and residential district. The aftermath of the attacks also forced the closure of PATH’s key station at Exchange Place that serves Jersey City, New Jersey’s expanding “Gold Coast” business and residential area. PATH’s more than 260,000 average weekday commuters between New Jersey and New York were affected in some way by these tragic events, and PATH ridership fell sharply during the following months. Among the PATH facilities that were damaged or destroyed at WTC, and in the two Hudson River tubes, and at Exchange Place Station were all of the electrical, power, signal, and communications systems. Recovery and restoration work began immediately, but was hampered by the extensive rescue, recovery, removal, and demolition work at the World Trade site. Broken water lines and fire fighting efforts flooded both river tubes, which were later sealed at Exchange Place to prevent additional potential damage to PATH’s New Jersey facilities. This paper describes PATH’s recovery program to replace the electrical, power, signal, and communications facilities from Exchange Place to the WTC Terminal. A temporary WTC terminal has been built to restore direct service to Lower Manhattan’s financial, business, and residential center as of November 23, 2003. As part of this program, new trackwork was installed to enhance operational flexibility and provide temporary interim service to Exchange Place Station, which reopened June 29, 2003. Capacity expansion provisions were included to allow for future 10-car train operations when a new rail car fleet is procured. Facilities replaced include a new traction power and auxiliary services substation, new cables, ductbanks, new signals and central control system, wayside phones, emergency power removal switches, tunnel lighting, radio antenna, and fiber optics. An accelerated design and construction schedule was followed, using a broad combination of in-house, consulting, and contractor forces.

The world energy consumption was about 567-578 EJ in 2017 which is still increasing – in 2017 by 2.2%, and yearly by 1.7% on average since 2006 (BP, 2018, IEA, 2018). Within this, the consumption of residential segment plays a significant role both in the EU (42%) and in Hungary (35%) as well (Eurostat, 2019). The Hungarian population spend 12.8% (35 EUR/capita/month) of their income on energy sources, and this rate is even higher in case of the pensioners, singles and those who have lower income (KSH, 2019). At the same time, the rate of renewables in the energy mix stagnates for years worldwide (14%), it is a bit higher in the EU and in Hungary than the world average (18-18%, IEA, 2018). Thus, the renewable energy sources can also have serious perspectives in the residential cost reduction, in the sustainable energy consumption and in the local income production. Our aim is to analyse the knowledge of Hungarian consumers on renewable energy sources, their willingness to apply them and the socio-demographic factors on these. To execute the research objectives, a national representative survey with 1000 people was started in April 2019 in Hungary. Based on the results of the questionnaire, it was concluded that the information of the inhabitants is below the average in case of every examined renewable energy source, which is especially true for the biomass-based energy sources. The ease is almost as important as the environment friendliness. An excessively high rate of respondents (34 and 27%) is interested in solar panels and solar collectors, 32% of them seclude themselves from the use of these energy sources. It would be justified to extend these consumer researches in the future for more countries. The authors wish to clarify how the differences in location, income status and residential segment and values influence the spread of these energy sources in the EU and by which tools could support the usage of these in the future. Nowadays the energy crisis has been more and more severe all over the world. In China there is enormous energy source, but due to the large number of population, the average possession of the total energy is lower, and the energy supply is relatively less. Enormous energy consumption of air conditioning systems in the residential buildings makes the energy conservation more important. The residential central air conditioning systems are being widely used due to its advantages of easy control and low operating cost. But there are still many problems to be resolved, of which the energy consumption of the residential central air-conditioning systems is a hot issue. The main cold and heat sources for residential central air conditioning systems are air-cooled heat pump unit, household gas air conditioning unit, air-cooled chiller unit/gas-fired boiler and water loop heat pump unit. The terminal facilities suited for the anterior three units are the fan coil units, and the terminal of the last water loop heat pump unit is normally indoor unit. The combined utilization of the heat and cold source units with their terminal units keep the indoor environment in desired state all the year. In this paper, based on an actual example, the basic principles of four systems mentioned above are outlined and analyzed, and four schemes are compared. By using the method of equivalent weight full load operation time, the annual energy consumptions of the four schemes are calculated and analyzed. Comparing the annual primary energy consumption of four schemes, the following conclusions can be drawn: in the case studied, the energy consumption of the household gas-fired air conditioning unit with fan coil system is the maximum, the consumption of the air-cooled chiller unit/gas-fired boiler with fan coil system is the next, then is the air-cooled heat pump with fan coil system, and that of the water loop heat pump system is the minimum. It can be observed that the water loop heat pump system is the optimal one and is the best on energy conservation. Through the study of this paper, the minimum energy consumption system is chosen so as to give the references for the energy savings of air-conditioning systems in the practice.

Hybrid systems consisting of a single or multiple renewable energy generators coupled with an environmentally-friendly storage system are used in renewable power production due to wide disparity between the intermittent power generated and the power demand. These systems also have the potential to provide 24/7 power without leaving a carbon footprint in operation. Finding the optimal size of a Hybrid Renewable Energy System (HRES) with no Loss of Power Supply (LPS) is of utmost concern when considering the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCE) of the system over its lifecycle. In this study, an optimization routine employing a search algorithm is developed to find the system configuration with a minimized LCE that meets also meets zero LPS. To this end, a system model is developed by integrating basic models of the subsystems. The system model is then used to investigate two different loading cases, 1) where the demand cannot be controlled as in the case of the power demand of a residential network, and 2) where the demand can be controlled up to certain limits, as in the case of the power demand of a data center or a data center network. Various types of controllable power demands (CoD) are studied. When compared to the power demand of a residential network, results demonstrate a significant reduction in the life cycle costs for CoD conditions.

Despite the sharp drop in transit ridership throughout the USA that began in March 2020, two different uses of land near transit stations continue to be implemented in the United States to promote ridership. Since 2010, transit agencies have given priority to multi-family residential construction referred to as transit oriented development (TOD), with an emphasis on housing affordability. In second place for urban planners but popular with suburban commuters is free or inexpensive parking near rail or bus transit centers, known as park-and-ride (PnR). Sometimes, TOD and PnR are combined in the same development. Public policy seeks to gain high community value from both of these land uses, and there is public interest in understanding the circumstances and locations where one of these two uses should be emphasized over the other. Multiple justifications for each are offered in the professional literature and reviewed in this report. Fundamental to the strategic decision making necessary to allocate public resources toward one use or the other is a determination of the degree to which each approach generates transit ridership. In the research reported here, econometric analysis of GIS data for transit stops, PnR locations, and residential density was employed to measure their influence on transit boardings for samples of transit stops at the main transit agencies in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San José. Results from all three cities indicate that adding 100 parking spaces close to a transit stop has a larger marginal impact than adding 100 housing units. Previous academic research estimating the higher ridership generation per floor area of PnR compared to multi-family TOD housing makes this show of strength for parking an expected finding. At the same time, this report reviews several common public policy justifications for TOD as a preferred land development emphasis near transit stations, such as revenue generation for the transit agency and providing a location for below-market affordable housing where occupants do not need to have a car. If increasing ridership is important for a transit agency, then parking for customers who want to drive to a station is an important option. There may also be additional benefits for park-and-ride in responding to the ongoing pandemic.
