There has been a long debate in the literature over whether the caste system is a unique social phenomenon or simply one manifestation of processes of social stratification which have a wider generality. New divisions and differentiations have been giving rise to new antagonism and social norms. Caste is not today what it was before 1950; and it has not become completely class or replica of it in Nepal. This study aimed to identify the fundamental factors and core values necessary to develop and implement a program for children at local child centers, considering their needs and characteristics. To achieve this, the research questions were set as follows: “What do researchers experience in operating programs at local child centers?” and “What does the experience of operating programs at local child centers mean to researchers?” The research employed the autoethnographic research method, and data were collected through memory materials, cultural artifacts, and self-reflection materials spanning from 2011 to 2022. The collected data were analyzed using the end-point coding method. The research findings revealed four types of programs: “Program of Living as I Am,” “Replica Program of Becoming an Expert,” “Superficial Program of Wanting to Become an Expert,” and “Subtle Program of Becoming an Expert.” These research results are significant as they provide direction and important guidelines for program development and operation. Additionally, they offer insights into the role of operators when utilizing the programs.

Background Despite the global acceptance of the impact factor (IF) by researchers and academic institutions as one, criticism has been voiced regarding its effectiveness in evaluating the unbiased impact of a journal. To overcome the limitations and drawbacks of the IF that were presented by the scientific community, they introduced several other citation-based bibliometric indices. Methods All plastic and reconstructive surgery journals were analyzed, and bibliometric indices were extracted from the relevant source. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to determine correlations between the various indices. Results All correlations in between the various bibliometric indices were found to be positively and statistically significant, ranging from moderately highly associated for the IF and Eigenfactor (r = 0.632) to very strongly associated (r = 0.962) for the IF and the Article Influence Score. Conclusion In the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, the Eigenfactor and its derivative, the Article Influence Score, could potentially serve as better indices than the IF in demonstrating the overall picture. This information is based on the inclusion of a greater number of journals in the calculation and subtraction of self-citations, without compromising their correlation with other indices. The use of Eigenfactor and other additional bibliometrics cooperatively with the IF could provide the most extensive evaluation of a journal's scientific impact.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide a “Q&A interview” conducted by Joanne Pransky of Industrial Robot Journal as a method to impart the combined technological, business and personal experience of a prominent, robotic industry engineer-turned entrepreneur regarding his pioneering efforts in starting robotic companies and commercializing technological inventions. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The interviewee is Jack Morrison, CEO and Co-Founder, Scythe Robotics. Morrison shares how he and his co-founders started this innovative company, the milestones and challenges he’s faced and his long-term goals. Findings Morrison received Bachelor of Arts degrees in Computer Science and German from Bowdoin College. He attended The George Washington University as a PhD student in Computer Science but left to co-found Replica Labs, a producer of software that turns any mobile phone into a high-quality 3D scanner. Morrison served as Replica’s CTO until it was acquired by Occipital in 2016, where he stayed on as a computer vision engineer until co-founding Scythe Robotics in April 2018. Originality/value While mowing his lawn in Colorado, Jack Morrison had a sudden insight: what if he could apply the latest robotics technology he was so familiar with to the challenge of commercialized landscaping? In 2018, Morrison teamed up with Replica Labs co-founder Isaac Roberts and Occipital’s Davis Foster, to create Scythe Robotics, a company that builds autonomous robotics solutions for the $105bn commercial landscaping industry. In June 2021, Scythe Robotics emerged from stealth with over $18m in funding with its first commercial product: a transformational, all-electric, fully autonomous mower designed to keep crew productivity high while also increasing the quality of cut and worker safety. The machine features eight high dynamic range cameras and a suite of other sensors that enable it to operate safely in dynamic environments by identifying and responding to the presence of humans, animals and other potential obstacles. Simultaneously, the machine captures valuable property and mower performance data, which helps landscape contractors improve workflow, identify upsell opportunities, schedule more efficiently and manage labor costs. The all-electric powertrain is quiet, emissions-free and radically more reliable than gas-powered manual mowers. Scythe Robotics’ business model is based on Robot as a Service. Instead of buying machines outright, customers are billed by acres mowed. This massively reduces contractors’ expenses and eliminates substantial costs. Scythe Robotics is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado and has offices in Vero Beach, FL and Austin, TX. Scythe is the recipient of the 2020 ALCC (Associated Landscape Contractors CO) Innovation Winner and the 2021 Colorado OEDIT Advanced Industries Grantee.

We wanted to know whether the mechanisms that discriminate the motion of first-order patterns (defined by spatial variations of luminance) differ from those that detect the motion of non-Fourier or second-order patterns (defined by spatial variations of contrast). To address this question we tested whether motion discrimination performance of first-order and second-order patterns was affected by a pedestal (Lu and Sperling, 1995 Vision Research35 2697 – 2722). A pedestal is a static replica of a moving pattern. We used pedestals with contrast or modulation depth twice the value at which it becomes possible to discriminate the direction of a moving pattern. A two-interval forced-choice task was used to determine how direction discrimination varies with contrast of sine gratings (1 cycle deg−1) and modulation depth of amplitude-modulated gratings presented either alone or with a pedestal. The amplitude-modulated gratings had a 5 cycles deg−1 carrier modulated at 1 cycle deg−1. Three different temporal frequencies (1, 3, and 12 Hz) were studied. Performance with sine gratings was unaffected by the pedestal at all temporal frequencies tested. For amplitude-modulated gratings the pedestal raised the modulation depth at which it became possible to discriminate the direction of motion. This elevation in threshold decreased when the mean contrast of the pattern was high. This result shows that immunity to pedestals of texture-contrast patterns (Lu and Sperling, 1996 Journal of the Optical Society of America13 2305 – 2318) does not generalise to other non-Fourier motion stimuli.

Objectives – To examine patterns of Inter-Library Loans and Document Supply (ILL) in a large network of libraries over a period of five years, in order to establish whether ILL services are being used to replace journal subscriptions. The authors also aimed to establish which journal titles were most requested in their network, to inform future acquisitions policy. Design – Longitudinal study using transactional data collected from the Italian Network for Inter-Library Document Exchange (NILDE) for the period 2005-2009. Setting – The Italian library sector. Subjects – Member libraries of NILDE, which is the largest ILL network in Italy with several hundred libraries. These consist primarily of university libraries, but also hospitals and health research institutions, public research institutions, and not-for-profit and public organisations. Methods – ILL request data collected from the NILDE network software were analyzed. Figures were retrieved for the number of different journal titles requested per year of the study overall and by individual institution. Further analysis was undertaken on requests for more recent articles, those published up to five years prior to being requested. This involved creating a list of the most requested titles for each year, and then compiling a core collection of journals that were requested 20 or more times in each year of the study. These core titles were analyzed for trends by subject and publisher, and for any significant correlations between either Impact Factors (IFs) or citation counts and ILL requests for particular journals. Main Results – The data revealed that the number of ILLs processed through NILDE increased every year during the period of the study. The majority of journals were only requested a small number of times in the five year period of the study, with 60% being requested five times or less. In the majority of instances, institutions were not borrowing the same title regularly. Analysis of the core collection of journals revealed that these repeated requests of the same title were mainly in the biomedical sciences and science and technology subject areas, and that these journals were often produced by smaller publishers who were not included in consortia purchasing. There was no correlation between journal impact factors (IFs) and ILL requests, but there was a statistically significant correlation between citation counts and ILL requests. Conclusions – ILL numbers are increasing despite big deals and consortia purchasing. The majority of requests are for articles that are two years old or older, and the authors suggest that this indicates that ILLs do not influence journal subscriptions. The authors suggest that ILLs may have increased during the course of the study (and may continue to do so) due to the current global financial crisis and its impact on library acquisitions.

A review of: Duy, Joanna and Liwen Vaughan. “Can Electronic Journal Usage Data Replace Citation Data as a Measure of Journal Use? An Empirical Examination.” The Journal of Academic Librarianship 32.5 (Sept. 2006): 512-17. Abstract Objective – To identify valid measures of journal usage by comparing citation data with print and electronic journal use data. Design – Bibliometric study. Setting – Large academic library in Canada. Subjects – Instances of use were collected from 11 print journals of the American Chemical Society (ACS), 9 print journals of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and electronic journals in chemistry and biochemistry from four publishers – ACS, RSC, Elsevier, and Wiley. ACS, Elsevier, and Wiley journals in chemistry-related subject areas were sampled for Journal Impact Factors and citations data from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Methods – Journal usage data were collected to determine if an association existed between: (1) print and electronic journal use; (2) electronic journal use and citations to journals by authors from the university; and (3) electronic journal use and Journal Impact Factors. Between June 2000 and September 2003, library staff recorded the re-shelving of bound volumes and loose issues of 20 journal titles published by the ACS and the RSC. Electronic journal usage data were collected for journals published by ACS, RSC, Elsevier, and Wiley within the ISI-defined chemistry and biochemistry subject area. Data were drawn from the publishers’ Level 1 COUNTER compliant usage statistics. These data equate 1 instance of use with a user viewing an HTML or PDF full text article. The period of data collection varied, but at least 2.5 years of data were collected for each publisher. Journal Impact Factors were collected for all ISI chemistry-related journals published by ACS, Elsevier, and Wiley for the year 2001. Library Journal Utilization Reports (purchased from ISI) were used to determine the number of times researchers at the university cited journals in the same set of chemistry-related journals over the period 1998 to 2002. The authors call this “local citation data.” (512) The results from electronic journal use were also analysed for correlation with the total number of citations, as reported in the Journal Citation Reports, for each journal in the sample. Main results – The study found a significant correlation between the results for print journal and electronic journal usage. A similar finding was reported for correlation between electronic journal usage data and local citation data. No significant association was found between Journal Impact Factors and electronic journal usage data. However, when an analysis was conducted for the total number of citations to the journals (drawn from the Journal Impact Factor calculations in Journal Citation Reports) and electronic journal use, significant correlations were found for all publishers’ journals. Conclusion – Within the fields of chemistry and biochemistry, electronic journal usage data provided by publishers are an equally valid method of determining journal usage as print journal re-shelving data. The results of the study indicate this association is valid even when print journal subscriptions have ceased. Local citation data (the citations made by researchers at the institution being studied) also provide a valid measure of journal use when compared with electronic journal usage results. Journal Impact Factors should be used with caution when libraries are making journal collection decisions.

Science depends on a communication system, and today, that is largely provided by digital technologies such as the internet and web. Despite the fact that digital technologies provide the infrastructure for this communication system, peer-reviewed journals continue to mimic workflows and processes from the print era. This paper focuses on one artifact from the print era, the journal issue, and describes how this artifact has been detrimental to the communication of science, and therefore, to science itself. To replace the journal issue, this paper argues that scholarly publishing and journals could more fully embrace digital technologies by creating digital libraries to present and organize scholarly output.

The aim of this study was to complete an audit on the number of open access journals within the discipline of Exercise Science. Publishing in open access journals results in wide dissemination of material in a very short period of time compared with the more traditional way of publishing in a subscription journal. The 2010 ERA journal list, category Human Movement and Sport Science, was initially utilised and then compared with the openness of the same journals in 2012. In this study journals were audited for their degree of open access, open licensing and open format. Open access relates to the free online availability of research results and hence research publications and in the discipline of exercise science relates to the concept of an idealised level playing field. Open licensing relates to the ability of the consumers to replicate and share those publications freely whilst open format relates to the use of open and transferrable format types. Open access increased (p=0.014) as did our measurement of open licensing (p=0.000) and open formats (p=0.021) between the 2010 and 2012 reviews of the journals in 1106 For code. This study reveals an increase in the number of Exercise Science journals that have full or partial open access over the two year period and suggests that authors are increasingly adopting peer reviewed open access journal publications. It is evident from this study that the impact of open access journals be assessed and further research into the feasibility of such a rating is imperative.

Aim/Purpose: Labeling a journal as “predatory” can do great damage to the journal and the individuals that have contributed to it. This paper considers whether the predatory classification has outlived its usefulness and what might replace it. Background: With the advent of open access publishing, the term “predatory” has increasingly been used to identify academic journals, conferences, and publishers whose practices are driven by profit or self-interest rather than the advancement of science. Absent clear standards for determining what is predatory and what is not, concerns have been raised about the misuse of the label. Methodology: Mixed methods: A brief review of the literature, some illustrative case studies, and conceptual analysis. Contribution: The paper provides recommendations for reducing the impact of illegitimate journals. Findings: Current predatory classifications are being assigned with little or no systematic research and virtually no accountability. The predatory/not predatory distinction does not accommodate alternative journal missions. Recommendations for Researchers: The distinction between legitimate and illegitimate journals requires consideration of each journal’s mission. To serve as a useful guide, a process akin to that used for accrediting institutions needs to be put in place. Impact on Society: Avoiding unnecessary damage to the careers of researchers starting out. Future Research: Refining the initial classification scheme proposed in the paper.

ABSTRACT It has been shown previously that treatment of seasonally anoestrous ewes with steroid-free bovine follicular fluid (FF), a crude inhibin-containing preparation, leads to a decrease in plasma FSH level which is accompanied by a marked increase in pulsatile LH secretion. Since FF contains several factors (e.g. activin, follistatin, unidentified components) other than inhibin, which might act to modify gonadotrophin secretion, it was of interest to establish whether these concurrent effects of FF on FSH and LH secretion persisted in ewes which had been actively immunized against a synthetic peptide replica of the α subunit of bovine inhibin. In June 1989 (anoestrous period) groups of inhibin-immune and control ewes (n = 5 per group) received 6-hourly s.c. injections of either bovine serum (2 ml) or one of two doses of FF (0·5 ml or 2 ml) for 3 days. Blood was withdrawn at 6-h intervals for 6 days beginning 24 h before the first injection. On the final day of treatment, additional blood samples were withdrawn at 15-min intervals for 8 h to monitor pulsatile LH secretion. Ewes were then challenged with exogenous gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH; 2 μg i.v. bolus) to assess pituitary responsiveness. In control ewes, FF promoted a dose-dependent suppression of basal (maximum suppression 65%; P < 0·01) and post-GnRH (maximum suppression 72%; P < 0·01) levels of FSH in plasma. This was accompanied by an increase (P < 0·01) in LH pulse frequency from 1·40±0·24 (s.e.m.) to 3·20±0·37 pulses/8 h. In contrast, FF did not affect secretion of either FSH or LH in inhibin-immunized ewes. However, mean plasma LH levels in immunized ewes were significantly lower (43%; P < 0·02) than in control ewes, irrespective of treatment. These findings indicate that in the anoestrous ewe the ability of FF to suppress plasma FSH is due entirely to its content of inhibin, that FF-induced enhancement of pulsatile LH secretion is mediated by inhibin, rather than some additional component of FF, and that immunoneutralization of endogenous inhibin can reduce LH secretion. Abstract. We compare coupled nonlinear climate models and their simplified forced counterparts with respect to predictability and phase space topology. Various types of uncertainty plague climate change simulation, which is, in turn, a crucial element of Earth System modelling. Since the currently preferred strategy for simulating the climate system, or the Earth System at large, is the coupling of sub-system modules (representing, e.g. atmosphere, oceans, global vegetation), this paper explicitly addresses the errors and indeterminacies generated by the coupling procedure. The focus is on a comparison of forced dynamics as opposed to fully, i.e. intrinsically, coupled dynamics. The former represents a particular type of simulation, where the time behaviour of one complex systems component is prescribed by data or some other external information source. Such a simplifying technique is often employed in Earth System models in order to save computing resources, in particular when massive model inter-comparisons need to be carried out. Our contribution to the debate is based on the investigation of two representative model examples, namely (i) a low-dimensional coupled atmosphere-ocean simulator, and (ii) a replica-like simulator embracing corresponding components.Whereas in general the forced version (ii) is able to mimic its fully coupled counterpart (i), we show in this paper that for a considerable fraction of parameter- and state-space, the two approaches qualitatively differ. Here we take up a phenomenon concerning the predictability of coupled versus forced models that was reported earlier in this journal: the observation that the time series of the forced version display artificial predictive skill. We present an explanation in terms of nonlinear dynamical theory. In particular we observe an intermittent version of artificial predictive skill, which we call on-off synchronization, and trace it back to the appearance of unstable periodic orbits. We also find it to be governed by a scaling law that allows us to estimate the probability of artificial predictive skill. In addition to artificial predictability we observe artificial bistability for the forced version, which has not been reported so far. The results suggest that bistability and intermittent predictability, when found in a forced model set-up, should always be cross-validated with alternative coupling designs before being taken for granted.

The random first order transition theory (RFOT) describing the transition from a supercooled liquid to an ideal glass has been actively developed over the last twenty years. This theory is formulated in a way that allows a description of the transition from the initial equilibrium state to the final metastable state without considering any kinetic processes. The RFOT and its applications for real molecular systems (multicomponent liquids with various intermolecular potentials, gel systems, etc.) are widely represented in English-language sources. However, these studies are practically not described in any Russian sources. This paper presents an overview of the studies carried out in this field. REFERENCES 1. Sanditov D. S., Ojovan M. I. ABSTRACT To study the effects of immunoneutralization of endogenous inhibin on gonadotrophin secretion and ovarian function, prepubertal heifers (n = 6) were actively immunized against a synthetic peptide replica of the N-terminal sequence of bovine inhibin α subunit bIα(1–29)Tyr30) coupled to ovalbumin. In contrast to ovalbumin-immunized controls (n=6), bIα(1–29)Tyr30-immunized heifers had detectable inhibin antibody titres (% binding to 125I-labelled bovine inhibin at 1:2000 dilution of plasma) of 17 ± 3% (s.e.m.) at puberty, rising to 31 ± 5% by the end of the study period 7 months later. Neither age (immunized: 295 ± 8 days; controls: 300 ± 5 days) nor body weight (immunized: 254 ± 13 kg; controls 251 ± 9 kg) at onset of puberty differed between groups. Although the difference did not reach statistical significance, mean plasma FSH concentrations recorded in inhibin-immunized heifers remained 35–40% higher than in controls throughout the 12-week period leading up to puberty (P = 0·14) and during nine successive oestrous cycles studied after puberty (P=0·10). Plasma LH concentrations did not differ between groups at any time during the study. Inhibin immunization had no effect on oestrous cycle length (immunized: 19·8±0·5 days; controls: 19·9±0·5 days). However, in comparison with controls, inhibinimmunized heifers had more medium sized (≥0·5 to <1 cm diameter) follicles during both the preovulatory (95%, P<0·001) and post-ovulatory (110%, P < 0·05 waves of follicular growth and more large (>1 cm diameter) follicles during the preovulatory wave (49%, P<0·05). In addition, the number of corpora lutea observed during the post-ovulatory phase of each cycle was significantly greater in the inhibin-immunized group (43%, P<0·01), as was the recorded incidence of cycles with multiple ovulations (19/56 in the inhibin-immunized group compared with 0/54 in controls; P<0·001). All six inhibinimmunized heifers had at least one cycle with multiple ovulation whereas none of the control heifers did so. These results support the conclusion that immunoneutralization of endogenous inhibin using a synthetic peptide-based vaccine can enhance ovarian follicular development and ovulation rate in heifers. Whether this ovarian response is dependent upon the expected increase in secretion of FSH remains to be established. Journal of Endocrinology (1992) 134, 11–18

Much has been written about the evaluation of faculty research productivity in promotion and tenure decisions, including many articles that seek to determine the rank of various marketing journals. Yet how faculty evaluators combine journal quality, quantity, and author contribution to form judgments of a scholar’s performance is unclear. A mathematical model of faculty judgment is presented that estimates a scholar’s research productivity that is surprisingly consistent with actual faculty evaluations. The model does not replace human judgment in evaluating a scholar’s research performance, but the model enhances clarity and objectivity in the evaluation process. The method is demonstrated with marketing faculty at one university.

Replication research is essential to scientific knowledge. Reviews of replication studies often electronically search for replicat* as a textword, which does not identify studies that replicate previous research but do not self-identify as such. We examined whether the 83 intervention studies published in six non-categorical research journals in special education in 2013 and 2014 might be considered replications regardless of using the term replicat* by applying criteria related to (a) the stated purpose of the study and (b) comparing the findings of the study with the results of previous studies. We coded 26 intervention studies as replications. Authors of 17 of these studies reported that their findings solely agreed with the results of the original study(ies). Author overlap occurred for half of the replicative studies. The likelihood of findings being reproduced did not vary as a function of author overlap. We discuss implications and recommendations based on these findings.

Call for submission. This editorial introduces the first issue of 2023 for Embedded Selforganising Systems (ESS) journal. The focus of this issue is the deployment of AI solutions in robotics and embedded systems. Our journal uses electronic publication, which provides a flexible way to submit and review contributions of authors from all countries. The advantages of such an e-journal are multifarious. In comparison to traditional paper journals, we replace the classic review and creation process with a new sliding issue model. Each issue starts with an initial editorial and an official call for papers. The submitted articles will be reviewed and, if accepted, published as soon as the final version is received by the committee. Based on this process, each sliding issue can be filled successively until the maximum number of articles is reached. During this period, all accepted papers can, already be read by other researchers while other papers are still in the reviewing process. Accordingly, the time to publish shrinks to a minimum. In addition, multiple issues with different focus can co-exist at the same time, which provides completely new possibilities to react on latest research topics. The journal also allows the integration of discussions and other reactions on published articles in the same journal issue. We are welcoming fresh ideas, on-going research technical reports and novel scientific works. We also intend to create a promising platform for creative and constructive discussions.

Is the revocation of citizenship—a policy increasingly adopted by democratic states—a violation of democratic principles? In an article published in the Spring 2016 issue of this journal, I argued that it is. A true commitment to the best understanding of democratic citizenship does not permit the revocation of some citizens’ status by others. David Miller and Ben Herzog are unconvinced. Elizabeth Cohen agrees that revocation is a violation of democratic principle, but argues that my defense of this claim leaves room for it nevertheless. These thoughtful critiques raise two questions to which I would like to respond: (1) What is the nature of citizenship in democratic states? (2) What can legitimately be done by democracies to protect themselves?

Objective – This study sought to determine whether evidence indicates a need to preserve print equivalent journal collections. In addition, this research aimed to provide data on the failure rate of print equivalent materials for possible digitization to replace existing poor quality or defective electronic surrogates. Methods – The project compared the content of randomly selected journal titles, volumes, and issues from seven electronic journal archives and their print equivalents held at the University of Saskatchewan Library. The archives were obtained from five separate vendors representing humanities, social sciences, science, technology, and medicine. Data were collected on the frequency and types of failure of electronic surrogates, supplemental content missing from electronic surrogates, and frequency and types of failure of print equivalent materials. Results – Across all electronic journal archives the failure rate of electronic surrogates was 7.5% for all PDF documents and 11.5% for scholarly PDF documents. For individual electronic journal archives the failure rate ranged from 0.7% to 19.5% for all PDF documents and from 0.3% to 26.5% for scholarly PDF documents. Data is presented on the failure rate of individual electronic journal archives, types of failure, and missing supplemental content. An examination of print equivalent titles found 1.7% of print scholarly articles could not be used or were not optimal for digitization. Conclusions – The study demonstrates the need for preserving print equivalent journal titles for at least the short (less than 5 years) to medium term (up to 10 years), while poorly digitized materials are identified, replaced, and digitally preserved. While electronic surrogates of image-rich scholarly papers are more likely to have quality issues, the study found some text-only PDF scholarly documents were illegible, indicating the need for caution against liberally applying this as a criterion for disposal of print equivalent titles. There is significant supplemental content absent from electronic surrogates which indicates a need for further discussion of the necessity for such information or for incorporating it into the digitization process to ensure a complete record of the print equivalent journals for future use. The failure rate of print equivalent titles for possible digitization provides additional data for discussions related to the determination of optimal overlap. It also suggests that the number of copies required for a full set of preserved journals over a specified time horizon may be greater than anticipated, unless page level validation is performed.

Abstract Weather and climate science has undergone a computational revolution in recent decades, to the point where all modern research relies heavily on software and code. Despite this profound change in the research methods employed by weather and climate scientists, the reporting of computational results has changed very little in relevant academic journals. This lag has led to something of a reproducibility crisis, whereby it is impossible to replicate and verify most of today’s published computational results. While it is tempting to simply decry the slow response of journals and funding agencies in the face of this crisis, there are very few examples of reproducible weather and climate research upon which to base new communication standards. In an attempt to address this deficiency, this essay describes a procedure for reporting computational results that was employed in a recent Journal of Climate paper. The procedure was developed to be consistent with recommended computational best practices and seeks to minimize the time burden on authors, which has been identified as the most important barrier to publishing code. It should provide a starting point for weather and climate scientists looking to publish reproducible research, and it is proposed that journals could adopt the procedure as a minimum standard.

Increased calls for rigor in special education have often revolved around the use of experimental research design. However, the replicability of research results is also a central tenet to the scientific research process. To assess the prevalence, success rate, and authorship history of replications in special education, we investigated the complete publication history of every replication published in the 36 journals categorized by ISI Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Report as special education. We found that 0.5% of all articles reported seeking to replicate a previously published finding. More than 80% of these replications reported successfully replicating previous findings. However, replications where there was at least one author overlapping with the original article (which happens about two thirds of the time) were statistically significantly more likely to find successful results.

This article responds to the two replies, published in this issue, to my article “Ultimate Meaning: We Don’t Have It, We Can’t Get It, and We Should Be Very, Very Sad,” published in the first issue of this journal. In the first reply, Turp, Hollinshead, and Rowe present an internalist challenge to my account of value, and a relational conception of the self as a challenge to my premise that leading a life includes everything you do and aim at within the project, effort, or enterprise of living and leading a life. I respond to the internalist challenge by showing it does not succeed in inserting values into acts. I respond to the relational conception of the self by noting that, regardless of the nature of the self, the project of leading a life includes all the things you do and aim at within that project, effort, or enterprise. Thus, we can accept a relational account of the self and allow for other-regarding values but that does not change the location of our pursuit of those values: they remain located within the meta-project of leading a life, leaving the meta-project of leading and living a life with nowhere to reach for a point. In the second reply, Cowan argues against feeling sad about life’s pointlessness. In response, I argue that sad facts warrant sadness. I further argue that there are reasons other than happiness to value truth, including the very, very sad truth about the ultimate pointlessness of our lives.

Mobility and impedance tensors are introduced for full journal bearings. These tensors may replace the well known mobility and impedance vectors. Since tensors apply to arbitrary systems of reference, coordinates rotating with the sleeve, i.e. fixed coordinates, will be introduced and will henceforth replace the unidirectional system in current use. As a consequence, the restriction to full journal bearing applications which was necessary up to now may be withdrawn. The mobility- and impedance methods, as derived for full journal bearings, from now on apply equally well to partial-arc bearings. The mobility- and impedance tensor descriptions, needed in applications of the methods, can be derived in a straightforward manner form the generally applied vector descriptions for full journal bearings. Descriptions for partial-arc bearings will also be presented.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore a new design for the journal of revolute joints that can improve the dynamic performance of 3D printed non-assembly mechanisms. Design/methodology/approach The design improves upon previous proposed designs that use drum-shaped journals in place of cylindrical ones. The authors introduce an innovative new worm-shaped journal. The authors also propose a systematic and efficient procedure to identify the best parameter values for defining the exact shape of the journal. Using three different mechanisms for the experiments, the paper constructs 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models using the design as well as cylindrical and drum-shaped designs. The parameters for the optimum geometry for each type of design are determined by dynamic simulation using the CAD system. Actual prototypes of the ideal designs are constructed using a commercial fused deposition modeling (FDM) machine for physical comparisons. Findings This paper shows that in simulations as well in physical models, the proposed design outperforms the previous designs significantly. Research limitations/implications This study was mainly focused on the FDM process, and the authors have not yet explored other processes. One limitation of this approach is that it requires the mechanism to be printed along the axial direction of the revolute joint. Originality/value This paper proposes a new design for the journal in 3D printed revolute joints. A clear advantage of the design is that it can easily be used to replace normal revolute joins in non-assembly models without affecting any other parts of the geometry. Therefore, with relatively little effort, the authors can print non-assembly mechanisms with improved dynamic performance.

The essays appeared in such journals as Literature & Aesthetics, Journal of Humanities, Arts and Social Science, and New Literaria: An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities. The context in which all the essays were composed is the increasingly disadvantaged position of academic humanities within universities and university curricula. While popular forms of the arts and humanities are generally thriving in America and Europe, the academic study of the humanities has lost favor with the general public as well as with many university administrators, who, increasingly wedded to data-driven decision processes, are inclined to fund faculty positions based solely on quantitative measures (such as number of majors) as opposed to philosophical or discursive arguments. As more and more students (and parents) seek areas of study promising training for specific post-graduation jobs, especially those tied to fields that seek to increase humankind’s power rather than those that explore humanistic meaning, majors such as biology, engineering, and health sciences experience robust growth, while departments of literature, history, languages, and philosophy languish for want of majors. Thus, we witness the disheartening plight of humanities departments just to replace retiring faculty, let alone grow.

Purpose This paper aims to present a systematic review of tourism articles using qualitative online methods. By focussing on tourism journals, this work explores the paradigmatic beliefs, methodological approaches and methods underpinning tourism qualitative online research. Design/methodology/approach This review was conducted systematically by following the reporting checklist of the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses by the Centre for Reviews and Dissemination. Findings Overall, this systematic review indicates that the ontological and epistemological beliefs guiding online research are not clearly expressed by tourism scholars. It also shows that the possibility of using the internet for more interactive and participatory forms of research has not been fully explored by tourism scholars. Research limitations/implications This paper expands tourism scholars’ awareness of the range of qualitative approaches/methods available by suggesting additional research instruments that could replace or complement the traditional ones. However, by selecting only indexed journal papers, other sources of publications, such as papers published in non-Scopus and non-Web-of-Science journals, books, book chapters and conference papers, were not included in the current review. Originality/value This work emphasizes the important role of cyberspace in facilitating virtual interactions between researchers and participants in the co-construction of qualitative empirical material.

This study departs from an observational study of sustainable tourism research articles published in the Indonesia tourism journals, which was analyzed by content analysis. This study aims to get a complete picture of what and how the manifestation of sustainable tourism research articles in Indonesia has been carried out, especially in methods and its applications. The authors found that tourism journals only occupied a small fraction (0.43%). Twenty-six tourism journals and 304 articles were identified. This study found that most methods used by sustainable tourism researchers generally replicate existing methods; there has been rarely development and or innovation of research methods. Qualitative research far outperforms quantitative and mixed methods, where descriptive qualitative research is the most significant. The application of the study is relatively evenly distributed on the dimensions of sustainable tourism and geographic area, but less on stakeholders and management functions. The authors conclude that the trend of sustainable tourism research published in Indonesian tourism journals is increasing. Tourism researchers are scattered from various parts of Indonesia, but tourism journals in Indonesia have not been able to attracted significant interest of the international research community yet. There has never been an assessment of the journal's methods and applications for sustainable tourism research in Indonesia. Therefore, this paper is beneficial as a reference for sustainable tourism researchers in the future.

We replicate the results of the landmark paper by Aschauer (1989) on the impact of public capital on the US economy. We obtained data from his stated sources and followed his exact methods and are able to replicate his main results. We also extend his data to the period 1949 to 2015, use different data sources, DOLS and VECM estimation, and Granger causality tests. We are again able to replicate his results. The author specifies signal information in bibliographies supporting science and research, which enables to use Web of Science Core Collection efficiently. Subscription to the alerts on new arrivals to the Web of Science Core Collection is based upon the preserved search and citation history. The subscribers are researchers and librarians who provide science and research information support. Intensive use of bibliographic databases was expected to replace selective dissemination of information, as the key technological processes of these alerttypes are identical. The author argues that these methods of differentiated bibliographic information services may be combined in providing alerts to researchers; she refers to regular requests as an example. Journal contents in the database may become one more option of individual information retrieval. Subscribers to rapid signal information may receive the alerts on articles published in domestic and foreign journals. These two methods would open up new opportunities within the system of science and research information support.

Purpose To grow, any field of research must both encourage newcomers to work within its boundaries, and help them learn to conduct excellent research within the field’s parameters. This paper aims to examine whether the existing body of neuromarketing literature can support such growth. Specifically, the authors attempt to replicate how a newcomer to the field of neuromarketing would go about orienting themselves to the field and learn how to conduct excellent neuromarketing research. Design/methodology/approach A total of 131 papers, published in the areas of “neuromarketing” and “consumer neuroscience” were downloaded and then identified as conceptual or empirical in nature. A separate database was created for each type of research paper and information was recorded. For both conceptual and empirical papers, the citation details, notably year of publication, journal, journal ranking and impact factor were recorded. Papers were then descriptively analysed with regards to number of publications over the years, content and journal quality. Findings It is found that interest in the field is growing, with a greater variety of topics and methods appearing year on year. However, the authors also identify some issues of concern for the field if it wishes to sustain this growth. First, the highly fragmented literature and the lack of signposting makes it very difficult for newcomers to find the relevant work and journal outlets. Second, there is a lack of high-quality, user-oriented methodological primers that a newcomer would come across. Finally, neuromarketing as it appears to a newcomer suffers from a lack of clear guidance on what defines good vs bad neuromarketing research. As a large majority of the reviewed papers have appeared in lower-ranked journals, newcomers might get a biased view on the acceptable research standards in the field. Originality/value The insights from the analysis inform a tentative agenda for future work which gives neuromarketing itself greater scientific purpose, and the potential to grow into a better-established field of study within marketing as a whole.

Soil beneficial microbes have a critical role in plant growth. Inoculating biofertilizer is suppose essential for supporting the plant performance and hence plant yield. The objective of field experiment was to verify the growth and production of celery (Apium graveolens L.) after biofertilizers application. The experiment had been performed in a plastic house in the mountainous area of tropical volcanic soil of West Java, Indonesia. The field trial was carried out in a Completely Randomized Block Design to test two microbial-coated urea formulas and a mixed biofertilizer. The control treatment was Nitrogen-Phosphorous-Potassium (NPK) compound fertilizer. All treatments were replicated three times. The celery was growing in low Nitrogen but high Phosphor and Potassium soil during the dry season. The field trial verified that plant height and biomass as well as yield of celery didn’t depend on fertilizer treatments. Nonetheless, this trial founded that both microbial-coated urea and mixed biofertilizer can replace the NPK fertilizer to produce a same yield of celery.
