The goal of this Masters Thesis research is to evaluate alternative transmission systems from remote wind farms to the main grid using low-frequency AC technology. Low frequency means a frequency lower than nominal frequency (60/50Hz). The low-frequency AC network can be connected to the power grid at major substations via cyclo-converters that provide a low-cost interconnection and synchronization with the main grid. Cyclo-converter technology is utilized to minimize costs which result in systems of 20/16.66 Hz (for 60/50Hz systems respectively). Low frequency transmission has the potential to provide an attractive solution in terms of economics and technical merits.

We present a design for a remote database access facility, which uses a message system as its communication medium. Adopting a message-based design offers a number of advantages over more conventional connection-oriented architectures for those remote database applications where the interaction between user and DBMS involves a single query followed by a single result. By complying with the CCITT X.400 Recommendations on Message Handling Systems, the design allows for networkwide access to remote DBMSs that is independent of the nature of DBMSs being accessed, the systems on which they reside and the network over which they are accessed. An initial implementation using the EAN distributed message system, developed at the University of British Columbia, is described as a means of demonstrating the design's feasibility.

Al-Saidi, Asma. „On-demand transmission model using image-based rendering for remote visualization“. Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55092/.

Annotation:
Interactive distributed visualization is an emerging technology with numerous applications. However, many of the present approaches to interactive distributed visualization have limited performance since they are based on the traditional polygonal processing graphics pipeline. In contrast, image-based rendering uses multiple images of the scene instead of a 3D geometrical representation, and so has the key advantage that the final output is independent of the scene complexity, and depends on the desired final image resolution. These multiple images are referred to as the light field dataset. In this thesis we propose an on-demand solution for efficiently transmitting visualization data to remote users/clients. This is achieved through sending selected parts of the dataset based on the current client viewpoint, and is done instead of downloading a complete replica of the light field dataset to each client, or remotely sending a single rendered view back from a central server to the user each time the user updates their viewing parameters. The on-demand approach shows stable performance as the number of clients increases because the load on the server and the network traffic are reduced. Furthermore, detailed performance studies show that the proposed on-demand scheme outperforms the current local and remote solutions in terms of interactivity measured in frames per second. In addition, a performance study based on a theoretical cost model is presen ted. The model was able to provide realistic estimations of the results for different ranges of dataset sizes. Also, these results indicate that the model can be used as a predictive tool for estimating timings for the visualization process, enabling the improvement of the process and product quality, as well as the further develop ment of models for larger systems and datasets. In further discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each of the models, we see that to be able to run the system for larger dataset resolution involves a trade-off between generality of hardware (the server and network) and dataset resolution. Larger dataset resolution cannot achieve interactive frame rates on current COTS infrastructure. Finally, we conclude that the design of our 3D visualization system, based on image-based rendering coupled with an on-demand transmission model, has made a contribution to the field, and is a good basis for the future development of collaborative, distributed visualization systems.

This thesis presents a study of remote sensing image compression to be transmitted over a noisy channel. The images are obtained by a remote sensing satellite and transmitting to an earth station. The compression is due to savings in bandwidth and transmitting power. Some of the most efficient image codecs presents serious problems in the presence of noise. So, the vector quantization technique was chosen to be used. Using the multi-stage vector quantization idea, a compression scheme with mean remove is proposed as a manner to separate and treat unequally the image information as its importance. An analysis on the design of the remote sensing satellite link is done with a comparison between the current scheme used the proposed one.

This paper will present the results of an investigation of the feasibility of using broadband analog fiber optic technology to send telemetry antenna outputs from remote sites to a central site. The fiber optic hardware consisted of a prototype analog fiber optic transmitter and receiver plus 10 km of single-mode fiber. Laboratory tests were performed to simulate the performance in the real-world. The fiber optic system had a noise figure of 33.5 dB and a third order intercept point of 16.75 dBm. The use of this fiber optic system to transmit a 215-320 MHZ telemetry antenna downconverter output over a 10 km fiber would only degrade the quality of real-world telemetry signals by a few tenths of a decibel. Key words: analog fiber optic transmission, remote telemetry antennas.

Within a short space of time, the spread of the Internet has completely altered the world in which we live. In our high tech, real-time streaming society, Michel Foucault’s panopticon has been realised within the digital realm (Foucault [1975] 1991). It is easy to get lost in this frenetic, consumerist—and, at times, tyrannical— computerised environment. However, as film theorist Andrew Utterson has observed, the “webcam’s intermittent streams of visuals encourage in the spectator/user a distinct sense of reverie” (2003, 197). This reverie generates an alternative space, a place of imagination where one may lose themselves, where new landscapes can be visited, and where endless horizons traversed (if only in a virtual manner). Informed by this concept, this doctoral research project explores the transportive capabilities of outdoor streaming webcams, not only in regard to vicarious travel but also in the manner that the spaces of the imagination and the virtual can overlap and interweave. Specifically, I have investigated the aesthetics of pixelated scenes in relation to the ‘sublime’, both as a multi-faceted, evolving, philosophical concept and as a visual, codified, art-historical trope. This research contends that the webcam belongs to the lineage of the panorama and other optical devices of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that enabled the viewer to escape into another world, relating it to our enduring desire to see beyond the horizon.

In this paper, we propose a new, low complexity approach for the design of laser radar (LIDAR) systems for use in applications in which the system is wirelessly transmitting its data from a remote location back to a command center for reconstruction and viewing. Specifically, the proposed system collects random samples in different portions of the scene, and the density of sampling is controlled by the local scene complexity. The range samples are transmitted as they are acquired through a wireless communications link to a command center and a constrained absolute-error optimization procedure of the type commonly used for compressive sensing/sampling is applied. The key difficulty in the proposed approach is estimating the local scene complexity without densely sampling the scene and thus increasing the complexity of the LIDAR front end. We show here using simulated data that the complexity of the scene can be accurately estimated from the return pulse shape using a finite moments approach. Furthermore, we find that such complexity estimates correspond strongly to the surface reconstruction error that is achieved using the constrained optimization algorithm with a given number of samples.

This thesis addresses a remote grid fed by a weak transmission line and a local source of renewable generation. Energy Storage System (ESS) is installed at the remote grid. The thesis investigates the use of the Energy Storage System in improving the overall system efficiency and increasing the power system stability for the transmission line and remote grid system. The Energy Storage System reduces transmission line losses and hence can improve the overall efficiency of the system. The key parameters that are significant to improving the overall system efficiency are derived and a simple mathematical analysis is undertaken to show the criteria for increased system efficiency. A PSCAD/EMTDC simulation is undertaken which is shown to be consistent with analysis both for simple and real wind profiles. For the case of stability investigation, a large Constant Power Load (CPL) is connected at the remote grid. This thesis performs the mathematical modelling and stability analysis of the combined CPL, grid, wind farm and energy storage. It is shown that CPLs fed by active PWM rectifiers are fundamentally stable if operated below the transmission line load-ability limit, and those fed by diode bridge rectifier can be unstable depending on filter values. It is revealed that the instability can be improved by control of auxiliary units such as an energy storage units. In order to reduce the simulation time required, a simplified model of a wind farm feeding a DFIG connected to a remote grid is proposed and compared with a detailed model using the PSCAD/EMTDC software.

The call for the system design in this book came from a field that grew to be a part of millions of lives in this country. It is a sport which has developed to have a major infrastructure, with large sums of money involved. In fact, the money involved has made it one of the largest tax earners country wide. Due to its high development, competition has become furious and breeders will do their utmost to produce a competitor which would have the slightest edge on the next one. As most people would know by now, the discussion is about the Horse Racing Industry. During the years, owners have relied on various exercising programs and breeding of proven winners to produce new ones. To give the animal the necessary training and simply run it on experience is no longer sufficient. A more scientific approach has become necessary. There exists a need for a system whereby one could monitor certain physiological aspects of the animal. This would not only allow the physical condition of each horse to be monitored, but also allow a more effective and specialized exercise program for each individual animal to be developed, thereby not only improving its ability, but saving on time as well. Tests that were considered included ECG, temperature, and speed measurements. Existing equipment performing the first two tests require the animal to be stationary. This defeats the object of the exercise, as information should be relevant to the animal when under strain. During test periods, the ideal situation would be to allow the horse to perform its exercise routine around the track without any interference. This could best be done by monitoring all the.necessary data via a radio link and having most of the analyzing apparatus in a small and light as possible package on the animal itself.

More and more people worldwide are becoming “carbon conscious”. This means they are becoming increasingly aware of the imminent adverse effects of global warming. Of late there has been an urgent drive for governments to be on the forefront of all carbon mitigation initiatives. One such drive involves the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change whose parties have been meeting regularly under the banner of Conference of Parties (COP) since 1995. At this conference, parties to the convention review progress made in dealing with climate change. Also key to the deliberations in such meetings are better ways of developing cleaner “carbon free” energy sources. Energy sources of this nature are commonly known as renewable energy sources. In essence global energy trends are constantly moving towards development of more renewable energy sources. It is an undeniable fact that some of viable renewable energy sources especially those with bulk capacity are usually located remotely from load centers. This inevitable reality necessitates the construction of long distance bulk power transmission corridors to link generation sites with load centers. Due to its many inherent advantages over High Voltage Alternate Current (HVAC) for long distance power transmission, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is gradually winning the favor of many utilities. In fact, recent advances in HVDC technology have encouraged many utilities to explore the possibility of harnessing remotely located renewable energy sources which would have otherwise not been viable with HVAC transmission. Through the unfortunate and inevitable phenomenon known as corona effect, overhead HVDC conductors suffer real power losses to the air dielectric surrounding them. Through corona, part of the energy carried on the transmission line is expended through ionization and movement of charges in the air dielectric. This study combined physics, mathematical as well engineering concepts to review corona phenomenon around HVDC lines with specific emphasis on space charge generation and motion within ionized DC fields as well as the influence of temperature on corona discharge or power loss. Also, unlike HVAC, performance of an HVDC system relies heavily on the availability of a reliable and robust telecommunication system. One of the key ways of ensuring reliability of a telecommunication system is by making sure that reliable power supplies are in place to power remote repeater stations. A novel concept of quasi-autonomous corona-based power supply (or QC power supply in short) that works on the principle of magnetohydrodymic (MHD) power generation was developed. A small scale experiment was then designed to assess the feasibility of such power supplies. The experiment was conducted with DC supply of a maximum rated voltage of 30 kVDC and generated up to 6 VDC at an optimum ambient temperature of 23°C. These results have confirmed that with further development QC power supplies have the potential of proving reliable power to remotely located repeaters or any other small critical loads along the stretch of the HVDC transmission line. Practical HVDC transmission systems operate voltages in the excess of 500 kV. By linear extrapolation of the above mentioned results; one would expect to yield up to 100-, 120- and 160-VDC from a 500-, 600- and 800- kV HVDC system, respectively. Although the study succeeded in conceptualizing a CMHD idea upon which the novel QC power supply was developed, quite extensive and rigorous design, modeling, prototyping and experimentation processes are still required before the first QC power supply can be commissioned on a practical HVDC line

The Case is modelled in 3D with the help of CAD software and then printed with a 3D printer. A down-scaled prototype is built with the help of the 3D printer and the 2D drawing will be used when the full scaled model is produced. The Arduino UNO handles temperature sensor and GPS measurements, LCD display, and the transmission of measurement data using GSM module via text message (SMS) to a cell phone or to a server over the Internet. The projected ended up with all the drawings and models finished for the Case as well as the implementation of down-scaled prototypes. The electrical system was tested and finished individually. But the complete system cannot be assembled inside the Case due to the time limitation. This means that the project can be further extended, where a full scale model can be developed and the electrical control system can be assembled together and mounted inside the Case.

In pneumatic pressure control applications the influence of tubes that connect the valve with the control volume ist mainly neglected. This can lead to stability and robustness issues and limit either control performance or tube length. Modeling and considering tube behavior in controller design procedure allows longer tubes while maintaining the required performance and robustness properties without need for manual tuning. The author\'s previously published Simplified Fluid Transmission Line Model and the proposed model-based controller design enable the specification of a desired pressure trajectory in the control volume while the pressure sensor is mounted directly at the valve. Thus wiring effort is reduced as well as cost and the chance of cable break or sensor disturbance. Parents and children increasingly spend time living apart due to marital separation and work travel. I investigated parent--child separation in both of these contexts to find that current technologies frequently do not meet the needs of families. The telephone is easy-to-use and ubiquitous but does not provide an engaging way of communicating with children. Videochat is more emotionally expressive and has a greater potential for engagement but is difficult to set up and cannot be used by a child without the help of an adult. Both telephone and videochat fail to meet the needs of remote parenting because they focus on conversation rather than care and play activities, which are the mechanism by which parents and children build closeness. I also saw that in both types of separation the motivation to connect at times conflicted with desire to reduce disruption of the remote household. To address some of these issues, I designed a system called the ShareTable, which provides easy-to-initiate videochat with a shared tabletop activity space. After an initial lab-based evaluation confirmed the promise of this approach, I deployed the ShareTable to four households (two sets of divorced families). I collected data about the families' remote interactions before and during the deployment. Remote communication more than doubled for each of these families while using the ShareTable and I saw a marked increase in the number of communication sessions initiated by the child. The ShareTable provided benefits over previous communication systems and supported activities that are impossible with other currently available technologies. One of the biggest successes of the system was in providing an overlapped video space that families appropriated to communicate metaphorical touch and a sense of closeness. However, the ShareTable also introduced a new source of conflict for parents and challenged the families as they tried to develop practices of using the system that would be acceptable to all involved. The families' approach to these challenges as well as explicit feedback about the system informs future directions for synchronous communication systems for separated families.

For decades, traditional remote sensing retrieval methods that rely solely on the spectral intensity of the water-leaving light have provided indicators of aquatic ecosystem health. With the increasing demand for new water quality indicators and improved accuracy of existing ones, the limits of traditional remote sensing approaches are becoming apparent. Use of the additional information intrinsic to the polarization state of light is therefore receiving more attention. One of the major challenges inherent in any above-surface determination of the water-leaving radiance, scalar or vector, is the removal of extraneous light which has not interacted with the water body and is therefore not useful for remote sensing of the water itself. Due in-part to the lack of a proven alternative, existing polarimeter installations have thus far assumed that such light was reflected by a flat sea surface, which can lead to large inaccuracies in the water-leaving polarization signal. This dissertation rigorously determines the full Mueller matrices for both surface-reflected skylight and upwardly transmitted light by a wind-driven ocean surface. A Monte Carlo code models the surface in 3D and performs polarized ray-tracing, while a vector radiative transfer (VRT) simulation generates polarized light distributions from which the initial Stokes vector for each ray is inferred. Matrices are computed for the observable range of surface wind speeds, viewing and solar geometries, and atmospheric aerosol loads. Radiometer field-of-view effects are also assessed. Validation of the results is achieved using comprehensive VRT simulations of the atmosphere-ocean system based on several oceanographic research cruises and specially designed polarimeters developed by the City College of New York: one submerged beneath the surface and one mounted on a research vessel. When available, additional comparisons are made at 9 km altitude with the NASA Research Scanning Polarimeter (RSP). Excellent agreement is achieved between all instrumentation, demonstrating the accuracy of the modeling approach and validating the computed Mueller matrices. Further, the results are used to demonstrate the feasibility for polarimetric retrieval of the total attenuation coefficient for Case II waters, a feat which is not possible using scalar remote sensing methods.

This research project addresses the unique challenges of extensive farming in terms of monitoring and controlling remote equipment or events. Poorly maintained roads and escalating fuel costs increase difficulty of farming and the time spent on physically monitoring remote sites further reduces financial yields. The research showed that there are very few solutions that implement wireless or electronic technology to overcome the challenges associated with these isolated and arid areas and that a low-cost, long range wireless telemetry solution that is easy to use would be beneficial for the extensive farming industry. It was therefore the aim of this project to develop a remote monitoring and controlling solution that implements wireless technology to convey information of activities around the farm utilising electronic means. To be able to successfully develop a wireless telemetry solution that will accurately meet the needs of this specific sector of industry, market research was conducted. To guide the research, the QFD (quality function deployment) process for product development has been implemented. The research consisted out of various aspects including a survey, financial considerations and international comparisons. The research also aided in the understanding of the day-to-day activities and also the physical parameters of extensive farms. Also, currently available technologies and products were evaluated to establish whether similarities exist that will aid in the development of a new product. The development process was based on the results obtained in the market research and resulted in a wireless telemetry solution that overcame all the design challenges and proved to be technically feasible, successfully addressing the application requirements. Zigbee technology was utilized for wireless communication because it provided an off-the-shelf solution with a number of readily available development platforms from various technology providers. A communication range of up to 6 kilometres with a transmitted power of 11dBm was achieved for point-to-point communication and a mesh network topology has been implemented for even longer range and complete coverage on farms. Various types of measurements have been catered for, with custom-designed instrumentation which enabled measurements such as water levels, movement and analogue signals. Also, a basic user interface was developed to enable the user to monitor or control the equipment or events remotely from a personal computer, locally or even over the internet. The results of this research project showed that by carefully selecting available technologies and understanding the application, it is possible to develop a solution that addresses the monitoring and controlling needs associated with extensive farming. The wireless telemetry system that was developed resulted in a saving equal to 10% of the total expenses of the farms per year. The telemetry system is therefore a financially feasible solution with a payback period of less than 1 year and far below the initial estimated budget. Without the need to physically monitoring equipment and events, an increase in productivity and the expansion of the overall enterprise is a further benefit added unto the monetary savings. In addition to the financial benefits of implementing new wireless technology, this is an opportunity to contribute to a cleaner and more sustained future as a legacy for the next generation by reducing the carbon footprint of the farm.

In this thesis the author's research into the technical and economic feasibility of exploiting remote hydrocarbon reserves using Clean Energy Producing Vessel (CEPV) is documented. An opportunity for the CEPV arises because of several concurring issues the demise of UK North Sea offshore oil and gas industry residual gas reserves remaining in small pocket fields in the North Sea and elsewhere which are unconnected by gas pipeline concern over the energy gap in the UK electricity market and recent developments and knowledge in offshore electrical generation and transmission technologies for the offshore industry, primarily developed for the renewable sector. This research programme had three key challenges. Firstly, the concept of CEPV had to be firmly established by considering the current state of the UK electricity supply and demand picture the location, quality and quantity of fuel (primarily natural gas). This research undertaken by literature review led to the specification of the plant itself including identifying appropriate technologies required both offshore and onshore. Secondly, the technological issues were examined in detail including the requirement of a natural gas processing plant to extract valuable condensates the design of an offshore power station with the technological prime-mover options and solutions the generation and transmission of the electrical power and the feasibility of using C02 sequestration. Further consideration was given to the design requirements of an appropriate vessel to house the offshore power station. The approach taken was to examine the technical issues in depth by examining the 'state of the art' then selecting an appropriate solution that met the requirements and identifying particular issues such as cable riser design in greater detail. The third challenge was to assess the economic feasibility of the CEPV. The approach taken was to assess the economics of different scenarios and by making comparisons with a base case model using a discounted cash flow (DCF) model, in which an iterative solution set up to find the internal rate of return (IRR) of the project is used. This analytical method gave the predicted cost of a unit of electricity, which could then be compared against those prices charged by other electicity generators. The thesis as presented is believed to be an original idea and is considered to contribute to the expanding discussions on offshore power generation schemes. The novel contribution is by way of the specification and lies in the technical design and subsequent analysis of the CEPV.

High quality noise and vibration measurements outside of a laboratory environment on real life structures and applications are not trivial. True boundary and operating conditions enforce unique challenges on the measurements. Measurements in hazardous situations such as high magnetic fields, and high temperature environments, etc., where ordinary measurement equipment and methods may not be employed, require further precautions. Post measurements objectives such as analysis, design and strategic decisions, e.g., control, rely heavily on the quality and integrity of the measurements (data). The quality of the experimental data is highly correlated with the on-field expertise. Practical or hands-on experience with measurements can be imparted to prospective students, researchers and technicians in the form of laboratory experiments involving real equipment and practical applications. However, achieving expertise in the field of sound and vibration measurements in general and their active control in particular is a time consuming and expensive process. Consequently most institutions can only afford a single setup, resulting in the compromise of the quality of expertise. In this thesis, the challenges in the field of sound and vibration measurements in high magnetic field are addressed. The analysis and measurement of vibration transferred from an operational magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to adjacent floors is taken as an example. Improvised experimental measurement methods and custom-made frequency analysis techniques are proposed in order to address the challenges and study the vibration transfer. The methods may be extended to other operational industrial machinery and hazardous environments. To encourage and develop expertise in the field of acoustic/vibration measurements and active noise control on practical test beds, remotely controlled laboratory setups are introduced. The developed laboratory setup, which is accessed and controlled via the Internet, is the first of its kind in the active noise control and acoustic measurements area. The laboratory setup can be shared and utilized 24/7 globally, thus reducing the associated costs and eliminating time restrictions.

The transmission lines (TL) are constructions intended for the transport of electricity from the generating sources to consumption centers. A TL has as basic elements: cables, insulators and towers. The land space occupied by these elements and surroundings must be respected across the various forms of occupation. This protected area is called right of way. The right of way as a potential risk area for population has numerous restrictions for its use, given their destination: protect the electrical system. Its width varies depending on the tension of the cables. For voltages of 230 and 500 kV (kilovolts) the width of the right of way is respectively 50 and 65 meters. The occupation and conservation of the right of way enables greater security for people and property located in the surroundings, as well as greater speed in detecting anomalies and for the maintenance of the TL. Occupations in the right of way, which are not included in the TL installation project, are considered illegal occupation or invasion and must be identified and removed. Currently there are remote sensing data of medium and high spatial resolution that can support the study of land use and land cover. In this context, this research aims to develop a methodology, based on remote sensing data (CBERS-2B / HRC and SRTM) to identify areas invaded and susceptible to irregular occupation in the right of way. Therefore, segmentation techniques, image classification and developed mathematical models using parameters defined for this search were applied. The study area is the right of way of the TL 230 kV Ibicoara / Brumado, located in the state of Bahia. This study used a comprehensive and effective way to characterize the issues related to TL and its right of way, considering technical, environmental and safety aspects, and contextualized remote sensing relating it to the subject, considering sensor systems and applications. The results of the study showed to be efficient in the observation / surveillance for the status of occupation of the right of way, in specific locations, making possible the anticipation of occurrence of invasions, giving more support for the management of power grid.

Ibrahim, Rony.

Most recent developments in Wireless Energy Transmission (WET) using electromagnetic (EM) waves focus on designing systems to recover the electromagnetic energy lost by common wireless systems such as Wi-Fi networks. However, the intermittent and unpredictable nature of these ambient sources makes harvesting energy critical for some applications. Hence, the WET over considerable distances using microwaves appears in this context allowing the remote wake-up and wireless powering of electronic devices in a myriad of applications that are a part of the constantly evolution of the way of life. Wireless powering of an electronic device eliminates the need of the battery, which reduces its size and cost. The work presented in this thesis belong to the WET in indoor environments field. When energy is voluntarily transmitted by microwaves, systems using continuous waves are not necessarily the most efficient. The aim of this research project is to achieve a complete WET system by focusing of EM waves at the receiver in order to increase the overall energy transfer efficiency. The studies presented during this thesis show that the time reversal technique (TR) is optimal for the focusing of EM waves. The procedure is carried out in two stages. In the first stage called \textit{learning stage}, a low energy pulse is transmitted by an emitting antenna. Another antenna placed in other location in the medium receives and records a signal made of a succession of delayed pulses, more or less attenuated, and related to reflections on the environment. In a second stage called \textit{focusing stage}, a high-energy signal constructed from the time reversal of the recorded signal is transmitted by one of the antennas. Using this technique, it results that the temporally inverted signal focuses spatio-temporally on the receiving antenna in the form of a Pulsed Wave (PW). These properties are particularly important for the WET. At the receiver circuit, the \textit{rectenna} (rectifying antenna) is the device for capturing and converting focused PW to DC voltage. In this research project, we introduce a novel rectenna design based on Schottky diodes with a current-doubler topology designed, developed and optimized to ensure optimum conversion performance of PW. Experimental measurements demonstrate good performance predicted by the design procedure. Moreover, the performances obtained are perfectly distinct from those found in the state of the art, making this work an innovation in WET domain

This thesis explores a novel technique for transceiver design in future wireless systems, which is cloud radio access networks (CRANs) with single radio frequency (RF) chain antennas at each remote radio head (RRH). This thesis seeks to make three contributions. Firstly, it proposes a novel algorithm to solve the oscillatory/unstable behaviour of electronically steerable parasitic array radiators (ESPAR) when it provides multi-antenna functionality with a single RF chain. This thesis formulates an optimization problem and derives closed-form expressions when calculating the configuration of an ESPAR antenna (EA) for arbitrary signals transmission. This results in simplified processing at the transmitter. The results illustrate that the EA transmitter, when utilizing novel closed-form expressions, shows significant improvement over the performance of the EA transmitter without any pre-processing. It performs at nearly the same symbol error rate (SER) as standard multiple antenna systems. Secondly, this thesis illustrates how a practical peak power constraint can be put into an EA transceiver design. In an EA, all the antenna elements are fed centrally by a single power amplifier. This makes it more probable that during use, the power amplifier reaches maximum power during transmission. Considering limited power availability, this thesis proposes a new algorithm to achieve stable signal transmission. Thirdly, this thesis shows that an energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem can be formulated and solved in CRANs that deploy single RF chain antennas at RRHs. The closed-form expressions of the precoder and power allocation schemes to transmit desired signals are obtained to maximise EE for both single-user and multi-user systems. The results show that the CRANs with single RF chain antennas provide superior EE performance compared to the standard multiple antenna based systems.

Despite national an international efforts, malaria remains a major public health in manycountries and sanitary systems are hindered by the lack of information on the actual burden ofmalaria, on the plasmodium transmission risk and on their geographical distribution.Nevertheless, spatial heterogeneity can be important and in this context, malaria control couldbe improved if could be focused in place and time. On one hand, the environment is a majordeterminant of malaria biodiversity, because of the vectorial transmission and the vectorsbioecological preferences. On another hand, orbiting satellites can provide environmental, climatic and meteorological data that already have been used for the study of infectiousdiseases. “Tele-epidemiology” has been defined as an integrated approach aiming atassociating medical, epidemiological or entomological ground data, with remotely-sensedenvironmental data, based on the in depth comprehension and measurement of the involvedphysical and biological mechanisms. In cities, it has already been possible to highlightassociations between mapped urban settings and malariometric indices, using satellite data atappropriate scales. Among travellers, in the objective to evaluate malaria risk or efficacy ofprophylactic devices, it would be useful to evaluate and predict transmission levels in thevisited places. The objective of the present thesis was to identify environmental factors thatcould be remotely-sensed and that could be used in the evaluation of malaria risk amongtravellers on one hand and in urban settings on the other hand.First, remotely-sensed data have been used to evaluate levels of exposure to malaria risk ofmilitaries, in the scope of a study on their risk factors for clinical malaria. Results haveshowed that, even when taking into account age and compliance to chemoprophylaxis asconfusion factors, the environment was the factor the most strongly associated to clinicalmalaria risk.In parallel, an extensive entomological study has been conducted during five years in Dakarand allowed demonstrating a strong spatial and temporal heterogeneity of malariatransmission in the city. Collected information were centralized in a georeferenced database(GIS - Geographic Information System) containing all entomological, environmental, meteorological, biological and physical data collected on the field or by remote sensing. Finally, modelling of entomological risk in the capital city of Senegal was undertaken, basedon data collected on the ground and environmental data issued from satellites. A first stepshowed the evolution of malaria transmission risk areas and allowed declaring that thefraction of human population that was at high risk for transmission decreased between 1996and 2007. A second step led to the development of 1) a map of the breeding sites with aproductivity indicator in Dakar city, 2) a map of aggressive adult Anopheles densities, and 3)a dynamic aspect was added to those maps, taking into account the variations of theirmeteorological determinants. The results of the work undertaken in this thesis demonstrated that remotely-sensedinformation, associated with a large amount of ground data, allow to adjust predictive models and to draw entomological risk maps, in urban settings or for moving populations

The vision of the smart grid is predicated upon pervasive use of modern digital communication techniques in today's power system. As wide area measurements and control techniques are being developed and deployed for a more resilient power system, the role of communication networks is becoming prominent. Advanced communication infrastructure provides much wider system observability and enables globally optimal control schemes. Wide area measurement and monitoring with Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) or Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) is a growing trend in this context. However, the large amount of data collected by PMUs or IEDs needs to be transferred over the data network to control centers where real-time state estimation, protection, and control decisions are made. The volume and frequency of such data transfers, and real-time delivery requirements mandate that sufficient bandwidth and proper delay characteristics must be ensured for the correct operations. Power system dynamics get influenced by the underlying communication infrastructure. Therefore, extensive integration of power system and communication infrastructure mandates that the two systems be studied as a single distributed cyber-physical system. This dissertation proposes a global event-driven co-simulation framework, which is termed as GECO, for interconnected power system and communication network. GECO can be used as a design pattern for hybrid system simulation with continuous/discrete sub-components. An implementation of GECO is achieved by integrating two software packages: PSLF and NS2 into the framework. Besides, this dissertation proposes and studies a set of power system applications which can be only properly evaluated on a co-simulation framework like GECO, namely communication-based distance relay protection, all-PMU state estimation and PMU-based out-of-step protection. All of them take advantage of interplays between the power grid and the communication infrastructure. The GECO experiments described in this dissertation not only show the efficacy of the GECO framework, but also provide experience on how to go about using GECO in smart grid planning activities.

The interface between protected and communal lands presents certain challenges for wildlife conservation and the sustainability of local livelihoods. This is a particular case in South Africa, where foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), mainly carried by African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) is transmitted to cattle despite a fence surrounding the protected areas. The ultimate objective of this thesis was to improve knowledge of FMD transmission risk by analyzing behavioral patterns of African buffalo and cattle near the Kruger National Park, and by modelling at fine spatial scale the seasonal risk of contact between them. Since vegetation is considered as a primary bottom-up regulator of grazers distribution, I developed fine-scale seasonal mapping of vegetation. With that purpose, I explored the utility of WorldView-2 (WV-2) sensor, comparing object- (OBIA) and pixel-based image classification methods, and various traditional and advanced classification algorithms. All tested methods produced relatively high accuracy results (>77%), however OBIA with random forest and support vector machines performed significantly better, particularly for wet season imagery (93%).In order to investigate the buffalo and cattle seasonal home ranges and resource utilization distributions I combined the telemetry data with fine-scale maps on forage (vegetation components, and forage quality and quantity). I found that buffalo behaved more like bulk feeders at the scale of home ranges but were more selective within their home range, preferring quality forage over quantity. In contrast, cattle selected forage with higher quantity and quality during the dry season but behaved like bulk grazers in the wet season.Based on the resource utilization models, I generated seasonal cost (resistance) surfaces of buffalo and cattle movement through the landscape considering various scenarios. These surfaces were used to predict buffalo and cattle dispersal routes by applying a cumulative resistant kernels method. The final seasonal contact risks maps were developed by intersecting the cumulative resistant kernels layers of both species and by averaging all scenarios. The maps revealed important seasonal differences in the contact risk, with higher risk in the dry season and hotspots along a main river and the weakest parts of the fence. Results of this study can guide local decision makers in the allocation of resources for FMD mitigation efforts and provide guidelines to minimize overgrazing.

Tropospheric aerosols play an important role in atmospheric chemistry, Earth’s radiative budget and climate. After their generation, aerosol can suffer ageing processes and altering their physicochemical properties. An accurate accounting for these processes requires observations of the aerosol properties on different temporal and spatial scales. The current thesis work is dedicated to: (i) study of physicochemical properties and mixing state of individual particles by means of analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy for aerosols collected during episodes of elevated aerosol loading; (ii) analysis of the effect of microphysical properties on optical characteristics as measured and retrieved by remote sensing; and (iii) investigation of possible parameterization of aerosol composition and structure in remote sensing algorithms.
Landfill monitoring can be considered as one of the main components of the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management planning. As long as it assists the design, implementation, operation, control and closure phases of landfills. Understanding the mechanical and biodegradable behavior of landfill waste mass is fundamental to take preventive or corrective actions inherent to structural and environmental issues. Settlements are one of the best parameters that defines the behavior of these sanitary landfills. On of that parameter is the vertical displacement that occur at different velocities, time and magnitude, due to their own weight, applied loads and, mainly, due to biodegradation processes. Despite the importance of monitoring, most of the measurement systems used in landfills are adapted from classical geotechnical engineering, not taking into account the peculiarities of this scope. The objective of this work was is to develop an automated measurement system to monitor surface and in-depth settlements of landfills. This system relies on wireless and remote data transmission, allowing better access to data. The development of the automated measurement system is based on a conventional methodology used in geotechnical engineering field. The implementation of the measurement system presented in this research involves the correlation of knowledge in geotechnical engineering, electronics, computer science, mechanics and telecommunications. That confluence of knowledge allows the development of a remote monitoring equipment, using electronic and electromechanical devices that favored the automation of the system and the transmission of data. The automated measuring system consists of a secondary system, a main system and a plate for settlement measuring, besides the guide tube and magnetic plates distributed in the waste mass at different depths. Its operation consists of automated measurements, in pre-established dates and times, detecting the position of each magnetic plate based on the amount of steps performed by a stepper motor. In order to validate and calibrate the system, a laboratory prototype was developed, consisting of a support for fixing the guide tube, magnetic plates and measuring tape. Initially, the analysis of the two measurement systems consists in positioning a magnetic plate at a determined height, and verify through the measure tape located inside the guide tube which position is the plate, this position is adopted as true value. The values of the measurements obtained by the measurement systems are compared with the true value. Parameters such as accuracy, precision and error of each measuring system are analyzed by descriptive statistics. Subsequently, the measurement systems are evaluated to determine its efficiency for each system. In order to calibrate the automated measurement system, a simple linear regression model was used, obtaining the line length (position) as a function of the number of turns (number of steps). This model is used for the treatment of the data after the transmission of the magnetic plate position. The measurements obtained by the automated measurement system occurred in reduced time, presenting accuracy and precision, with an absolute error of 19.40 mm. It was verified that the developed system is a good alternative of measurement, since it does not require the presence of an operator in situ, and it allows performing the readings in pre-defined time, generating reliable data and suitable interpretations.

______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
Cognitive radio has been proposed as a promising solution to the spectrum scarcity problem. In such solution, unlicensed secondary users have the challenge of using the best spectrum's opportunities without interfering with the operation of licensed primary users. Hence, many researches have been carried out to maximize the cognitive radio throughput under the restriction of avoiding interference on primary user network. However, most of these researches have considered that the transmission of secondary users is not allowed within the sensed band during the sensing period. This consideration leads the cognitive radio to underutilize the available spectrum while sensing the radio frequency environment. Although current technologies do not allow for transmission and sensing at the same time, we show in this paper that it is possible to sense and receive at the same time. We propose an extension for the traditional energy detection technique that allows for the cognitive radio to sense the spectrum and decide about the primary user presence even while other secondary useres are transmitting in the sensed spectrum band. Obtained results show the advantages of the proposed model against the traditional spectrum sensing model. Among these advantages, we remark that the results obtained for some values of secondary user SNR practically solve the e ciency problem observed in the traditional spectrum sensing techniques.

This thesis firstly presents a nonlinear extended deterministic Susceptible-Infected (SI) model for assessing the impact of public health education campaign on curtailing the spread of the HIV pandemic in a population. Rigorous qualitative analysis of the model reveals that, in contrast to the model without education, the full model with education exhibits the phenomenon of backward bifurcation (BB), where a stable disease-free equilibrium coexists with a stable endemic equilibrium when a certain threshold quantity, known as the effective reproduction number (Reff ), is less than unity. Furthermore, an explicit threshold value is derived above which such an education campaign could lead to detrimental outcome (increase disease burden), and below which it would have positive population-level impact (reduce disease burden in the community). It is shown that the BB phenomenon is caused by imperfect efficacy of the public health education program. The model is used to assess the potential impact of some targeted public health education campaigns using data from numerous countries. The second problem considered is a Susceptible-Infected-Removed (SIR) model with two types of nonlinear treatment rates: (i) piecewise linear treatment rate with saturation effect, (ii) piecewise constant treatment rate with a jump (Heaviside function). For Case (i), we construct travelling front solutions whose profiles are heteroclinic orbits which connect either the disease-free state to an infected state or two endemic states with each other. For Case (ii), it is shown that the profile has the following properties: the number of susceptible individuals is monotone increasing and the number of infectives approaches zero, while their product converges to a constant. Numerical simulations are shown which confirm these analytical results. Abnormal behavior like travelling waves with non-monotone profile or oscillations are observed.

This work proposes a channel allocation methodology in a cognitive radio network (CRN) that uses a predictive and adaptive channel database. A spectrummodeling algorithm, that allows simulating channel occupation in cellular technology bands, generates the prediction data. The use of prediction enables the identification of opportunities in the bands of interest, which allows prioritizing the use of those channels with greater probability of being idle. Thus, this work extends the scope of IEEE 802. 22, in that proposes the use of prediction data, as well as the use of cellular technology bands, which are commonly used in urban areas. The adaptive nature of the developed system updates the channel list dynamically over the allocation cycles. This feature enables to prioritize the channels with greater success in the allocation process, since the channel list is updated according to the results of secondary users (SUs) allocation. The proposed methodology aims to allocate the SU with the minimum of channel sensing operations required. The adaptive feature of the channel database gives a major contribution to reducing the channel sensing operations in the CRN. The decrease in channel sensing operations reduces the exchange of information between the functions that comprise the cognitive plane of a CRN. Consequently, a reduction in the network signaling traffic is expected, as well as a reduction of delays resulting from the search of available channels.

This master thesis deals with a data remote transmission by means of SMS and GPRS technology. The overview of current solutions is presented and then a remote temperature measurement and a data transmission employing a communication module GSM/GPRS TM1 through GSM network using GPRS technology is described. As a response to an impulse, the communication module sends SMS. The technical solution is described in details including HW and SW design of the data transfer and processing equipment using a ATmega 162 microprocessor. This equipment communicates with a server (PC), which displays the measured temperature. A prototype which was used for a validation of the design is also described.

Abstract: Nematodes are important phytoparasites that constitute a serious issue for coffee cultivation in Brazil. Because root infection by nematodes induces spectral variation in leaves and defines a unique spatial configuration in the cultivation field, the aim of this study is to evaluate the potential of remote sensing data acquired in multiscale to discriminate and map healthy, early infected and severely infected coffee plants. This study was carried out in three experimental areas, located in the in southern Minas Gerais State, in which the occurrence of nematodes was certified and biophysical and hyperspectral measurements of the leaves and on the canopy were made. Hyperspectral data were also used to simulate the bands of the RapidEye and OLI/Landsat 8 sensors to identify the most sensitive spectral ranges for pathogen discrimination in coffee plants. None of the biophysical parameters efficiently discriminated the leaves of healthy and infected plants, but the band simulations indicated that red, red edge and near infrared spectral ranges were complementary to the discrimination of healthy coffee plants and the two levels of infection. These bands, plus an (NDVI) image, were used for a multispectral classification of healthy and nematode-infected areas... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)
