This book provides an in depth look into the digital transformation of the Indian media industries, arguing that it has primarily been facilitated by the advent of social media platforms and a resulting shift in the creator dynamics of contemporary film and television production. Drawing on first-hand research within three categories of agents: creators, platform and portal executives, and intermediaries (talent agents, and multi-channel networks), Smith Mehta develops the concept of the ‘new screen ecology’ to show how the Indian screen industries are affected by social relations between these actors and how industrial practices blur the amateur-professional divide through creator and content interdependencies. Mehta interrogates the production practices of 13 different platforms and portals, including Hotstar, Netflix, YouTube, and TVFPlay, analyzing the extent to which they benefit from the lack of censorship and restrictive industrial practices characteristic of traditional media structures. In doing so, he examines the dynamics of digital transformation in the screen industries in a region-specific context and contributes to a body of literature on Indian digital production cultures. This book investigates the political, social and economic transactions that led to the digital transformation of the Indian audio-visual industries. It traces the interdependences between two social (YouTube, Facebook) and eleven digital (Hotstar, Spuul, Hoichoi, Addatimes, TVFPlay, Reliance Jio, Zee5, Voot, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, AltBalaji) video streaming services, in platforming content drawn from both professional and professionalizing-amateur sources. Drawing on approaches from critical media industries studies, political economy and cultural studies, it interrogates the shifting creator dynamics in contemporary Indian film and television production with the advent of internet-based local and global video distribution services. In doing so, it brings to light the contribution of Indian intermediaries such as talent agents and third-party service providers that manage YouTube channels, also referred to as multichannel networks, in facilitating the localisation strategies of global portals such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, enabling the movement of creators from platforms to portals and expanding their value propositions through investments in content and talent-led ventures.

Titles in the Core Text series take the reader straight to the heart of the subject, providing focused, concise, and reliable guides for students at all levels. This chapter discusses ‘lifting the veil’, a phrase that refers to situations where the judiciary or the legislature have decided that the separation of corporate personality from the members must not be maintained. In this case, the veil of incorporation is said to be lifted. ‘Lifting’ is also known as ‘peeping’, ‘penetrating’, ‘piercing’, or ‘parting’. The chapter presents statutory examples of veil lifting, many of which involve corporate group structures and others involve straightforward shareholder limitation of liability issues. It also considers cases of veil lifting by the courts as well as classical veil lifting during the periods of 1897 to 1966, 1966 to 1989, and 1989 to the present. Three cases are highlighted: Adams v Cape Industries (1990), Chandler v Cape Plc (2012), and Prest v Petrodel Industries Ltd (2013). The chapter also examines claims of tortious liability, the liability of a parent company for personal injury, and commercial tort. Finally, it looks at the costs and benefits of limited liability.

This chapter describes the evolution of India’s industrial structure. Unlike industrialization carried out through large state-owned firms, or industrialization through a cadre of large private corporations, or industrialization through a network of small firms, many alternative organizational dynamics play simultaneously in the Indian system. The system consists of many private businesses that constitute the large-scale industrial sector. Policies were put in place to develop the molecular economy and to develop State-owned firms investing in large-scale units. These policies led to the emergence of important and dynamic segments making up India’s heterogeneous model of capitalism. Each has been in coexistence with the other and added variety to the economy. In the quest for economic progress, if Indian society was to be industrialized, modernized, autonomous, self-reliant, able to defend itself, and an independent center of economic power, State-directed industrialization was realized as a key solution for national development.

In this chapter, we look at four cases: Genoa, Venice, Portugal, and the Netherlands. Genoa, Venice, and Portugal acted as transitional agents over a five- to six-hundred-year period, creating sea power and trading regimes to move Asian commodities and innovations to and from European markets. While Genoa and Venice were primarily Mediterranean-centric, Portugal led the breakthrough from the constraints of the inland sea and inaugurated Europe’s Atlantic focus. None of these actors possessed the power of China nor subsequent global actors, but for their age, they were critical technological leaders, providing a technological bridge from the eastern zone of Eurasia to the western zone. The Netherlands fits into this narrative by combining Baltic and Atlantic activities to construct a European trade regime that greatly overshadowed the earlier transitional efforts. Buttressed by the development of agrarian and industrial technology and a heavy reliance on peat and wind as energy sources, the Dutch case seems idiosyncratic. Most critically, its energy transition was only partial. Although the Netherlands made clear advances in some power-driven machinery and technological innovation , the heat and energy that were expended remained constrained by the inherent limitations of the energy sources.

These developments have in many ways defined and accelerated the pace of modern life and led to vast improvements in living conditions for millions of people, just as they have also brought new fears of resource exhaustion and fossil-fuel induced climate change. Today, as America begins to move beyond the use of fossil fuels toward a greater reliance on renewables, including wind and solar energy, there is a pressing need to understand energy in America’s past in order to better understand its energy future.

Development of new technologies, progressive urbanization, increasing consumerism and industrial boom in developing countries has led to elevated pollution of the environment. The spectrum of pollutants produced and released to the environment has increased in the last few decades including the agricultural, industrial, pharmaceutical and plastic industries. In the developed and underdeveloped countries where environmental pollution goes on increasing day by day, the concern of mankind to the threat of humanity increases which comes from anthropogenic degradation of the environment. An analytical chemist is always in search of cheaper, quicker, more sensitive, more reliable, precise methods of analysis. To achieve such a goal many properties of the materials are studied. Nanotechnology meets many of the conditions mentioned above and is very economic. So, analytical nanotechnology is an important tool for preconcentration and separation of pollutants at low levels.

Commodity chemicals are the intermediates that are generally involved in the synthesis of other high-end products. The increasing demand for various industrial products has upscaled the requirement for commodity chemicals. Originally, the industrial sector was dependent upon conventional and toxic chemicals to sustain its processes. However, the advent of biotechnology led to the development of numerous microbial processes producing enzymes, extremozymes, organic acids, organic solvents, etc., Moreover, the soil environment has diverse forms of microbial communities performing assorted functions. As a result, a thorough understanding of the soil microbiota involved in providing regulatory ecosystem services can aid in the development of exceptional microbial strains capable of meeting the high demand for these commodity chemicals. In addition, the exploitation of these excellent manipulative microbial systems can improve and customize the synthesis of commodity chemicals and thereby reduce the reliance on synthetic and petroleum based products. In chapter 3 Derbes discusses efforts during the antebellum era by southern state legislators to create financially self-sustaining penitentiaries that encouraged inmate rehabilitation through silent reflection and physical labor. The European Enlightenment’s influence on new methods of punishment and technological innovation from the Industrial Revolution contributed to the rise of prison workshops and inmate labor in the Deep South. An examination of inmate labor at the state penitentiaries of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia highlights a controversial aspect of free labor within a slave society. Convicts provided a captive, reliable, and inexpensive workforce, but their use as labor attracted criticism from local artisans and mechanics’ organizations. This competition between costly private and cheap inmate labor led to conflict that abated temporarily when demand for military supplies increased during the Civil War. The modern prison-industrial complex evolved from experimental workshops established at southern state penitentiaries nearly two centuries ago.

How China reacts to a potential US-led TPP or the current TPP11, and whether a China-centric ordering is compatible with a US-led one, will be determined by both domestic and geopolitical factors. These include China’s domestic economic structure and reform agenda, as well as China’s relative power vis-à-vis the United States and the strategic interaction between the two countries. Due to a variety of domestic constraints—such as the dominant role of SOEs and a reliance on industrial policy to move up GVCs—TPP or TPP11 is unlikely to make China substantially deepen its domestic economic reform or converge toward a hard law-based liberal economic ordering. Nevertheless, China’s perception of the potential negative economic and geo-political impacts of a US-led TPP has strengthened its will and efforts to establish a China-centric regional ordering: China has accelerated both its RCEP negotiations and the implementation of its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative. A China-centric ordering will exhibit mixed features of both market and statist components.

The connection between these processors and memory modules must be highly reliable for efficient big data analysis. Multistage interconnection networks (MIN) provide data communication between processors and memory modules at efficient speed with reasonably high reliability. This chapter provides a detailed introduction to MINs with their evolution and characterization. Further in this chapter, the research trends among researchers about various classes of MINs have also been discussed.

The COVID-19 pandemics show cased across all industries how vulnerable supply chains can be. In many companies this is leading to a shift of paradigms away from low-cost to a more reliable and robust supply chain which comprises higher inventories and logistics cost. This underlines the necessity of supply chain resilience which already became more and more important over the last years. This paper shall investigate different forms of disruption during the pandemics and strategies how to manage them in terms of supply chain resilience. Especially strategies which led to a competitive advantage over a company’s competition are of interest. Finally, it will be discussed what implications for the future arise out of the discussed cases.

Reliance Gas Pipelines Limited (RGPL) is currently implementing a gas pipeline project from Shahdol, Madhya Pradesh to Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh for evacuation of gas produced from Coal Bed Methane (CBM) blocks owned by Reliance Industries Ltd. This pipeline will be hooked up with GAIL’s HVJ Pipeline at Phulpur. Over all Pipeline system includes 312 km (approx.) long trunk line, and associated facilities such as Compressor Station at Shahdol, Intermediate Pigging facilities, Metering & Regulating facilities at Phulpur and 12 No. Mainline valve stations. Gas produced from CBM blocks will be dehydrated within Gas Gathering Station facilities of CBM Project located upstream of pipeline Compressor station at Shahdol. Gas received at pipeline battery limit is dry and non-corrosive gas in nature, Internal corrosion is not expected in normal course of operation, however internal corrosion of the natural gas pipeline can occur when the pipe wall is exposed to moisture and other contaminants either under process upset conditions or under particular operating conditions. Even though internal corrosion is not expected during normal course of operations, to take care of any eventuality, it is proposed to implement Internal Corrosion Monitoring (ICMS) system in this project. ICMS will provide an efficient and reliable means of continuous monitoring internal corrosion. Internal Corrosion Monitoring (ICMS) system is used as a part of overall integrity management framework; to achieve two objectives viz., verify the corrosive behaviour of gas and to verify the efficacy of applied preventive actions. Philosophy involved in evaluating a suitable CM technique would include : • Applicable corrosion damage mechanisms, anticipated corrosion rates and probable locations. • Suitable CM technique and location based on process condition, system corrosivity, water content, pigging facilities, available corrosion allowance, design life, maintenance etc., • Measurement frequency. Some of the Corrosion Monitoring techniques used for pipeline and of relevance are: • Weight-loss Corrosion Coupons (CC), • Electrical Resistance probes (ER), • Linear Polarization Resistance Probe (LPR) • Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UT) • Sampling Points (SP) This paper discusses the merits / demerits of these corrosion monitoring techniques, considerations for selecting a specific technique for the Shahdol – Phulpur Gas Pipeline Project and highlights the implementation of the internal corrosion monitoring system.

An 8000 kW class Hybrid Gas Turbine (HGT) project, administered by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), has been ongoing since July of 1999 in Japan. Targets of this project are improvement in thermal efficiency and output power by using ceramic components, and early commercialization of the gas turbine system. The ceramic components are used for stationary parts subjected to high temperature, such as combustor liners, transition ducts, and first stage turbine nozzles. Development of the gas turbine is conducted by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI), to achieve the Turbine Inlet Temperature (TIT) of 1250°C, thermal efficiency of 34%, NOx emission less than standard regulation values, and 4,000 h engine durability. Kyocera is in charge of the development and evaluation of the ceramic components. Recently, recession of the Si based ceramic materials under the combustion gas is the focus of attention to improve the reliability of ceramic components for gas turbine. For the HGT project, the silicon nitride material (SN282 : silicon nitride material produced by Kyocera Corporation) is used for the components subjected to high temperature. The SN282 was evaluated under the combustion gas, and clear recession was observed. Our technology of the Environmental Barrier Coating (EBC) is under development to obtain reliable heat resistive SN282 components, against the recession by combustion gas. Reliability of the SN282 with EBC has been evaluated by exposure and hydrothermal corrosion test. Ceramic components made of SN282 with EBC will be also evaluated by a proof engine test of 4,000 h, which starts in the spring of 2002.

The second Generation of EGT’s G30 DLE combustion system was introduced after a successful series of high pressure rig and engine tests. This paper covers how operational problems with field commissioning hardware on the lead DLN machine were dealt with, leading to achievement of reliable low NOx hardware. Several changes were applied to the early design which improved the mixing and reduced the effects of high temperature distortion and combustor dynamics. This resulted in increased life of the burner and changed the characteristics of dynamics. It also led to very low emission levels with an outstanding capability for turndown of CO with NOx below 25 ppmvd (15% O2) over the whole load range. Further coverage is given to the effect of field tuning, and of fuel composition on the amplitudes and frequencies of dynamics. The installation has been supported by on-line condition monitoring of engine parameters, emission levels and ambient conditions, which are also discussed. The general overview of site history is followed by a summary of lessons learnt in field comparison to development test bed.

Abstract The integration in computer integrated manufacturing systems (CIMs) plays a significant role in improving the quality and productivity. To achieve this objective, a uniform product and process representation and an effective, comprehensive and reliable data exchange mechanism are required. Recent works on product data integration have led to STEP (international Standard for Exchange of Product data models). In this paper, we define a model which integrates the STEP product data models with process data models. The idea of classification of STEP product data models is used to classify the process data models. Examples from mechanical industries are included to demonstrate the features of this model.
