Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe French reaction to West German Ostpolitik has long been denigrated, alternately equated with mistrust and inconstancy. This doctoral work aims to challenge this interpretative paradigm in order to re-establish the reality of the French position. To do this, it will firstly draw on a historiography that has been largely renewed since the 2000s, in particular on France’s relationship to the German question, secondly on archival sources which are now fully accessible but have been insufficiently exploited until today, and, finally, on a redefinition of the chronological boundaries of the subject, which will make it possible to re-establish continuity between the presidencies of de Gaulle-Pompidou-Giscard d’Estaing on the one hand, and the Kiesinger-Brandt-Schmidt governments on the other. In doing so, this thesis will uncover the foundations, dynamics and subtleties of the French position towards Ostpolitik, revealing a « design restored »

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis PhD thesis analyses the gaze cast on divided Germany which is at stake in the narratives on contemporary art in France between 1959 and 1989. It aims at considering French art history in a new way, paying attention to the discourses developed by French art critics and historians about the GDR and the FRG. The unequal reception of those two concurrent German art scenes during the cold war reveals the political antagonisms which French discourses about art are based on. This dissertation is inspired by historical methodologies provided by cultural transfers and crossed history, as well as by recent historiographical research on contemporary art. It points out the diverse perceptions of the two Germanies and underlines their blind spots

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleAt the end of the 1940s, a new theatrical avant-garde appears on the small stages of the Left Bank in Paris: the theatre of the “absurd”, as conceptualised by the British drama critic Martin Esslin. This innovative dramatic writing style succeeds in establishing itself with the French and international public, and enjoys a long-lasting success in West German theatres. This thesis aims at uncovering the process of cultural transfer and the modes of reception in the Federal Republic of Germany through the main representatives of this movement: Arthur Adamov, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet and Eugène Ionesco. Based on previously unpublished archival sources, this work retraces the path of the mediators of this cultural import, follows the chronology of the reception and highlights the diversity of the types of media used: theatre, radio and television. The individual steps through which the theatrical works were circulated in the West German theatre landscape between 1949 and 1989 will be analysed from the discovery by publishing houses via different translations, to major stage productions and finally the acceptance by the theatrical press and the general public. Thanks to its cosmopolitan nature, the theatre of the “absurd” was endowed by the West German host culture with an international dimension that contributed to its successful integration. Hence this study opens a new chapter in the history of Germany, its culture and theatre as well as, more widely, the French-German cultural relations

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleTill now, the construction of the European Economic Community has essentially been realized on the economic level. Its complete realization has also to be made on the military level. But there are numerous pitfalls before it reaches that stage. In our thesis, we have tried to define those problems: they are political, industrial, technological ones, etc. . . The integration of Great Britain into the European Economic Community has not changed the British positions concerning Europe: Great Britain goes on preserving its tight links with the United States. It does not agree upon the Western Europe union frame since it is bound to nation. As for Germany, its case is very complex, since Bonn has to take into account its own wish to be unified again while asserting strongly its Atlantic and European ties. We have been also interested in the nature of the military integration. Will it be conventional or nuclear? Won't the recent sovieto-american agreements about euro-missiles be a supplementary obstacle to a real European nuclear force? That is to say, will the European Economic Community be able to arm itself on the nuclear level, whereas, USSR renounces to its short and medium rang weapons, and is likely on the point of destroying an important part of its strategic arsenal? The dilemma is sizeable
