The perspective on the Pastoral Epistles presented in this paper differs from the established scholarly consensus and moves beyond the controversy concerning pseudonymity versus authenticity. After examining the development of the ‘Corpus Pastorale’ theory and clarifying some methodological questions, the paper argues for an interpretation of the Pastorals separately from each other and in their specific relation to Paul and his tradition. Significant examples indicate the possibility of understanding 2 Timothy and Titus as authentic letters of Paul, whereas 1 Timothy proves to belong to the second century ce. From this perspective, many otherwise contradictory aspects of the history of interpretation regain their rationale.

Annotation:
In this essay I explore the implications of Augustine’s notion of moral conscience in the polemical treatises written during the late 300’s and the early 400’s. During this period Augustine found himself locked in controversy with both the Manichaeans and the Donatists over the fundamental truths of the Christian faith. Against this background I examine Augustine’s understanding of conscience with reference to Faustus of Milevis and Petilian of Constantine. With respect to Faustus of Milevis, I situate Augustine’s understanding of conscience in the context of his adaptation of the notion of conscience found in Paul’s Pastoral Epistles to his repudiation of the Manichaeans in three key passages: 1Tim. 1:5, 1Tim. 4:1-3, and Tit. 1:15. In the case of Petilian of Constantine I investigate the meaning of conscience in relation to three major themes found in Petilian’s letters: the subjective disposition of conscience, the hiddenness of conscience, and the responsibility for the subjective disposition of conscience. Finally, I conclude the essay by reflecting more generally on the meaning and use of the notion of conscience in polemical disputes. Not only does Augustine develop a notion of conscience that addresses personal and ecclesial concerns, but he also characterizes conscience as both stable and malleable.

In my book Authority in Paul and Peter: The Identification of a Pastoral Stratum in the Pauline Corpus and 1 Peter, I claim to have established not certainty, but a balance of probability, that an extensive layer of Pastoral-type redaction overlies this literature. I did so on the basis of an accumulation of converging lines of evidence which came to light in applying different kinds of criteria to relevant passages. Something I did not do, which I propose now to consider and illustrate, is how to weigh degrees of probability that particular passages are later addition or interpolations, whether they can be connected with the Pastoral Epistles or not.

Abstract The pneumatology of the Pastoral Epistles (PE) appears at first glance to be rather limited. The term pneuma occurs only seven times in the PE. In this essay, I will address the seven references in canonical order and then summarize the pneumatology of the PE. The PE reinforce the traditional systematic theological perspective of the role of the Spirit as active in revelation and the salvation process and as empowering persons for service. The Holy Spirit is the main person of the Trinity actively working in eschatological salvation for all by bringing forth the fruit of holiness and working powerfully through the sufferings of gifted persons.

This study aims to evaluate the possiblity of Paul being the author of the Epistle to Titus. The study uses a structural exegesis as by Daniel Patte to examine the convictions expressed through the text and how these correlate with the ones found by Patte in his analysis of the so called genuine Pauline Epistles. The study concludes that the Epistle to Titus correlates on several aspects with the Pauline Epistles on convictions expressed by the authors of the letters. Both authors seems to share a conviction: (1) That the christian should “remain as is”. (2) That the christian has a responsiblity to honour God with its life. (3) That the receivers of the letter had experienced the same touch of God in their lives as the author himself. Further, both authors seem to equate opponents of different religious groups as the same type of “opponents” – maybe as preachers of what Daniel Patte would call a “non-evangelium”.

Annotation:
This thesis seeks to further the scholarly discussion of the coherence of the Pastoral Epistles by providing the most thorough analysis to date of the cohesion of each letter. The need for such a study arises from two sources. First, the previous works on coherence of the Pastorals, which have turned the tide of scholarship, focused on thematic coherence of the corpus. While this has been extremely helpful, there is still a need to examine each letter individually and to examine thoroughly the use of language to bind together each discourse unit and the various ways in which the discourse units connect to each other. Second, a renewed and even more extreme argument for incoherence has recently been published (James D. Miller, The Pastoral Letters as Composite Documents) which begs response along the lines just suggested since it analyzes connections and lack thereof within and between the discourse units. In the thesis two chapters are devoted to each letter. In the first chapter on each letter, the letter is examined to determine the boundaries of each discourse unit using cohesion shift analysis (drawing from the work of G. H. Guthrie). Then the cohesion of each unit is analyzed noting common devices from the ancient epistolary genre, rhetorical devices, lexical and semantic repetition and symmetrical patterns. The second chapter on each letter focuses on connections between the units in the letter- connections between contiguous units, semantic chains (drawing from the work of J. T. Reed), and the grouping of units into larger sections. Thus the variety of connections across and throughout the letter are highlighted. A structure is argued for each letter which reflects, as much as possible, these connections and the development of thought in the letter. The thesis concludes that there is a high degree of cohesion in each of the Pastoral Epistles at both the micro and macro levels.

Annotation:
Abstract This essay considers the use of Hebrews in the deliberations at the Council of Trent (1545–63) in response to the theological challenges posed by the Protestant Reformers. The reception of Hebrews at the Council of Trent stressed the importance of the sermon in countering the Reformers on very important doctrinal issues. First, the numerous textual citations from Hebrews show its acceptance in the canon of Scripture as an authoritative voice to counter the teachings of the Reformers on particular issues like Original Sin, justification, the Eucharist, the sacrificial character of the Mass, and the distinction between external and internal priesthoods vis-à-vis the Reformers’ understanding of the priesthood of all believers. Second, the many appeals to Hebrews by the bishops and theologians of Trent place the sermon at the heart of the worship life of the Roman Catholic Church, the pastoral side of its reception in Catholicism joining the doctrinal side. This reception, however, is not without its problems, chief among which is the long-standing practice of interpreting Hebrews as evidence for supersessionism, the rejection and replacement of Judaism with Christianity. Fortunately, that changed with the promulgation of the decree Nostra Aetate, the Second Vatican Council’s “Declaration on the Church’s Relation to Non-Christian Religions,” in 1965.

Introduction: It is a growing theme, full of meaning and subjectivism, which increasingly demonstrates an important relationship with the quality of life and with various adaptive functions of the human being, including spirituality as a source of strength and resistance and greater resilience in the face of problems. health or difficult situations. For a broader understanding, it is essential to differentiate between spirituality and religiosity. Spirituality is a personal search for answers to existential questions, whereas religiosity encompasses a relationship, also personal, with God based on the rituals of a religion. Methods: The present work had a total of fifty members of the extension group Pastoral Universitaria linked to Unisul – Tubarão, which includes academics, university employees and members of the local community, religious or not. Results: the results showed a statistically significant difference between the total value of the spirituality questionnaire and the quality of life questionnaire (p= 0,0076), but there was no relationship between these values and the sociodemographic data. It can be seen, therefore, that higher levels of spirituality are closely related to better quality of life rates, when assessed through subjective scales. Conclusion: Therefore, it is possible to observe a strong correlation between spirituality and quality of life in the existing literature, which is no different in this research, therefore, the same alert about the importance of discussing the topic. Bringing it to the fore is a way of bringing faith and science together, fostering studies and increasing one’s interest in life.

"This prospective, non-randomised controlled trial aimed to investigate the effects of brief app-based sessions of mindfulness meditation (MM) and utilisation of either problem-focused (PFC) or emotion-focused coping (EFC) styles on positive affect (PA), negative affect (NA) and depression symptomatology during nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study enrolled 19 medical students to undergo a 10-minute MM intervention. These same students were also divided into either PFC or EFC groups. Affect was measured using the positive and negative affect schedule (PANAS), depression symptomatology was measured using the centre for epidemiological studies-depression (CES-D) scale and the brief COPE survey was used to categorise individuals as either PFC or EFC. Analysis showed no significant between-subject interaction for MM on PA, NA or CES-D score. Analysis of coping styles showed no significant between-subject interactions in relation to PA or NA, though CES-D scores approached significance (p=0.057) and PFC scored significantly lower than EFC at baseline (p=0.02). Significant within-subject effect of time found for PA and NA across both analyses (p<0.05). 61.1% of cohort scored above CES-D cut-off for being considered at risk of depression. These results identify a need for further work into more intensive MM interventions with larger sample sizes as well as study into stressors associated with lockdown to more fully establish whether PFC strategies are the most beneficial. In addition, a clearly high level of psychological distress has been implicated in this study population, which may have implications for student pastoral care during this period."

Annotation:
This paper discusses the religious dimension of the public debate concerning the public health measures adopted by the Romanian authorities during the pandemic and focuses on the role played by the Romanian Orthodox Church within this context. It delineates the different camps that were formed within the Church in this regard and traces their evolution throughout the pandemic. It contextualizes the position of the Church in order to better understand it, placing it within the broader context of the Romanian society during the pandemic and integrating it within the longer history of post-communist relations between the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Romanian state and the Romanian civil society. It analyses the political impact of the public health measures and the role of the Church in shaping this impact. Finally, starting from the Romanian experience of the pandemic and from the ideological, theological and political disputes that it has generated within the Romanian public sphere, it develops some general conclusions regarding the relation between faith, science and politics whose relevance, if proven valid, surpasses the Romanian context and thus contributes to a more ecumenical discussion regarding the theological, pastoral and political lessons that can be learned from an otherwise tragic experience.
