This paper discusses the inertia tensors of iron golf club heads and their influence on the swing of a golfer and the behavior of the golf club. Inertia tensors of various five-iron club head configurations were determined using solid modeling and were compared with equivalent solid ellipsoids. A golf swing and club behavior analysis was performed using a computer model comprised of a 3D parametric flexible model of a golf club driven with data from a recorded golf swing, and an impact function. The impact results were verified experimentally. The analysis without impact determined that altering club head inertia had a minor effect on the torque required to swing the club and the deflections of the club head at the time of impact. The analysis with an eccentric impact found that altering club head inertia had a major effect on transmitted forces and torques and a moderate effect on deflection of the club head.

Context As sports are reinitiated around the United States, the incidence of COVID-19 among youth soccer athletes remains unknown. Objective To determine the incidence of COVID-19 among youth soccer athletes and the risk-mitigation practices used by youth soccer organizations. Design Cohort study. Setting Survey distributed to Elite Clubs National League member clubs. Patients or Other Participants Youth soccer club directors throughout the United States. Main Outcome Measure(s) Surveys were completed in late August 2020 regarding the club's current phase of return to soccer (individual only, group noncontact, group contact), date of reinitiation, number of players, cases of COVID-19, and risk-reduction procedures being implemented. Case and incidence rates were compared with national pediatric data and county data from the prior 10 weeks. A negative binomial regression model was developed to predict club COVID-19 cases using the local incidence rate and phase of return as covariates and the log of club player-days as an offset. Results A total of 124 respondents had reinitiated soccer, representing 91 007 players with a median duration of 73 days (interquartile range = 53–83 days) since restarting. Of the 119 clubs that had progressed to group activities, 218 cases of COVID-19 were reported among 85 861 players. Youth soccer players had a lower case rate and incidence rate than children in the United States (254 versus 477 cases per 100 000; incidence rate ratio = 0.511, 95% CI = 0.40, 0.57; P < .001) and the general population in the counties where data were available (268 versus 864 cases per 100 000; incidence rate ratio = 0.202, 95% CI = 0.19, 0.21; P < .001). After adjusting for the local COVID-19 incidence, we found no relationship between the club COVID-19 incidence and the phase of return (noncontact: b = 0.35 ± 0.67, P = .61; contact: b = 0.18 ± 0.67, P = .79). Soccer clubs reported using a median of 8 (interquartile range = 6–10) risk-reduction procedures. Conclusions The incidence of COVID-19 among youth soccer athletes was relatively low when compared with the background incidence among children in the United States during the summer of 2020. No relationship was identified between the club COVID-19 incidence and the phase of return to soccer.

Annotation:
Rooksdown House was the private wing of Park Prewett Mental Hospital, Basingstoke, which was converted into a plastic surgery unit in 1940 to treat service and civilian casualties from the Second World War. The Rooksdown Club was formed at the unit c. 1945-1947 after a patient experienced negative reaction to his disfigurement by members of the public while travelling home on a train. The work carried out by both institutions to aid patients in their psychological rehabilitation, particularly service casualties, is the principle focus of this thesis. In order to place their work in context, the thesis first discusses the work of plastic surgeon Harold Gillies and his colleagues at the purpose-built Queen’s Hospital, Sidcup, during and after the First World War. In particular, it examines how the patients were helped in their psychological rehabilitation. It then discusses the establishment of plastic surgery units during the Second World War, again highlighting the work of Gillies who, in his role as Consultant Advisor to the Ministry of Health, travelled around the country inspecting units and writing reports. Following on, the thesis examines the work undertaken at Rooksdown House from 1940 until its transfer to Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton, in 1959. In particular, it focuses on the war years until c. 1948 and includes the testimonies of patients and staff at the unit. It also discusses how patients were affected by depression in the early days and what was done at the hospital to try to counter it. It then describes the formation and work of the Rooksdown Club and examines to what extent it carried out its three aims, namely to keep patients and staff in contact with one another, to help members with welfare matters, and to try to educate the public about disfigurement. The thesis finally discusses the factors behind the success of the unit and club, and suggests possible reasons why the club was not particularly successful with more recent plastic surgery patients.

Introduction: The majority of University of the Western Cape coaches believe that in most sport codes, many female and male athletes get injured at least once a season. Consequently, occurrence of injuries signifies many set-backs in any team sports. University of the Western Cape sports injury intervention and rehabilitation strategies are relatively under-developed, and have not been systematically implemented, despite their proven effectiveness. However, due to intensive training, local and national league competitions, the number of injured athletes at University of the Western Cape has increased, and so delays of athletes’ recovery are caused. Thus, it is assumed that University of the Western Cape efforts may have lack of the necessary injury precautions on prevention and rehabilitation such as proactive injury treatment, paying special attention to the therapeutic process, including other necessary mechanisms. The current study has explored facilitating factors and some of the barriers on the implementation of injury prevention strategies, and determined the effectiveness of rehabilitation within University of the Western Cape sport teams in views of athletes, coaches, and medical staff. Methods: This study used a sequential exploratory design which entailed an initial phase of quantitative data collection and analysis, followed by a phase of qualitative data collection and analysis. This study used a close-ended survey and semi-structured interviews to identify the barriers and facilitators associated with the implementation of injury prevention strategies among sports clubs at the University of the Western Cape. Results: Data were collected on the general knowledge of players and team coaches about injury prevention as well as their sources of information regarding injury prevention. Football players were 49.5% while 15.8% were basketball players in this study. Cricket players were 10.9% while rugby players were 9.9%. Sources of players’ knowledge of injury prevention included doctor/physiotherapist, coaches and the media. Sources of coaches’ knowledge of injury prevention included doctor/physiotherapist, media and seminars. Most players and coaches agreed that there is a greater chance of sustaining an injury during a competitive match than during training. Players and coaches also agree that the risk of injury is reduced by wearing preferred protective clothing and thoroughly warming up and stretching prior to training or competition. Barriers to the implementation of an injury prevention strategy include not having enough time, being too tired after training, no advice given on such techniques, the notion that nobody else does it and lack of proper equipment. Facilitators of an injury prevention strategy include availability of medical staff (doctors and physiotherapists), players’ understanding of the coach’s instructions, and injury prevention facilities at University of the Western Cape, services accessibility and quality, injury discovery and follow-up, and injury prevention policy at University of the Western Cape. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were made: (i) Intervention directed at players and coaches in the form of health promotion programmes through education to increase their knowledge and support in implementation of all prevention strategies either in training or in competition; (ii) Governing bodies at University of the Western Cape should develop and disseminate written sports safety policies and guidelines and supervise clubs in their development programmes.

Besides the support of Aniridia Foundation International, there are several other services for the blind and visually impaired. Parent Training and Information Centers and Community Parent Resource Centers can help parents with children who are blind or visually impaired. These centers are located all over the United States, and they help families of children and young adults with disabilities (from birth to age 22). Also, they help families obtain appropriate education and services for their children with disabilities, train and inform parents and professionals on a variety of topics, resolve problems between families and schools, and connect children with disabilities to community resources that address their needs. For more information on a center located in your state, please visit http://www.ilru.org/html/publications/directory/index.html. All websites mentioned in this chapter will be listed at the end of this chapter along with several other websites for other services and organizations that may assist you. The Lighthouse International has been helping visually impaired people since 1905. It strives to help visually impaired individuals live better lives and to be in independent. It is also dedicated to preventing disabilities. To accomplish this it has research studies, prevention efforts, advocacy initiatives, education programs, and vision rehabilitation services. For more information, please visit the Lighthouse International website at www.lighthouse.org. The Lions International began to dedicate services to the visually impaired in 1925 when Helen Keller challenged the Lions Club to be “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.” Today Lions is successful in helping those who are blind and visually impaired. A very important program Lions has is called SightFirst. This program was started in 1989 to help prevent blindness. Just a few of the services are helping to construct or expand eye hospitals and clinics, contributing to cataract surgeries, and providing sight-saving medication. This program is also striving to eliminate preventable childhood blindness, and to control river blindness and trachoma. For more information, please visit the Lions International website at www.lionsclubs.org.

The increased level of modern sport development increases the demands claimed on different aspects of the training process with further rehabilitation organization and realization. That is why we still have the problem of an adequate and effective integral system creation. The mentioned direction has a direct connection with the activity of scientists, coaches- practitioners and sports clubs. They have to work within one mechanism of interaction. Materials. Studying the level of working capacity influence stimulation and organism rehabilitation means on an organism of basketball players from higher educational establishments on the basis of a wildgrowing plant root “snowdon rose” (Rhodiola rosea), classical massage with special oils and contrast shower application. Research methods. The following methods were used in the experiment: scientific-methodical sources analysis concerning the level of working capacity and athletes’ functional rehabilitation increase; functional tests; the received video material with the indices analysis; mathematical statistics. The research realization was on the basis of N.F. Katanov State University, Khakassia and Khakassia Technical Institute (branch) of Siberian Federal University in Abakan. Results. During the research work we stated qualitative and quantitative indices of athletes’ coordinating endurance with the help of video together with other mentioned above rehabilitation means; the received results were handled and we revealed positive changes in the studied information values of basketball players’ motor sphere and respiratory system. Conclusion. The results analysis, received after the research, helped to come to the following conclusion: out of the presented components the biological factor in a form of a wild-growing plant root “snowdon rose” (Rhodiola rosea) has the main influence on the working capacity and functional rehabilitation of basketball players’ organisms.
