The monograph examines migration processes in the Russian Federation, the use of foreign experience for their regulation. This chapter identifies five unique insights from this research that advance current discourse about regional economic development, and the role that businesses play in shaping it. First, there are regional advantages that stem from a talent base whose skills are applicable across many industries or sectors of the economy. Second, different factors play prominent roles in attracting and retaining talent. For managerial and administrative talent, economic opportunities play the primary role for talent attraction; quality of life factors play a more important role for talent retention. Third, talent is often more geographically bound than the companies that employ this talent. Fourth, hidden headquarters comprise a significant amount of headquarters activity. A nephrologist should have the generic skills of a consultant general physician, plus theoretical knowledge, and skills in nephrology. Moving on from a purely apprenticeship model, in the last 40 years several countries have listed the desirable knowledge and skills content for a specialist nephrologist in their jurisdiction. Some of these lists are exhaustive. Assessments of competence often include a written test of knowledge, and workplace based assessment or reports on specific skills or overall performance. We list some of the common generic headings used to define these areas of competence, and point to some curricula for specialist nephrologists. We also summarize methods of learning and point to resources which are available internationally, particularly online. The majority of the numerical need for additional nephrologists globally is in regions with fewer physicians, and fewer resources for their education. The ISN has proposed a global curriculum and identified how this might be tailored to regional needs. We might all help with producing support learning internationally, and we point to some good sources below.How to best support the development of nephrologists in these regions without unintentionally attracting them away from places of greatest need is an important question.

This chapter presents data from a propriety survey of approximately 3,000 professional headquarters employees across twenty-three companies in the Minneapolis-St. Paul headquarters economy. The data confirm many expected demographics of this talent pool. They are highly educated, they are high-earning, they are predominantly in dual career relationships, and many are raising children. The data also verify the frequency with which this talent pool moves across companies and across industries. The data also show that different factors primarily affect the attraction and retention of talent to this region. Quality of life factors play a more prominent role in retention, whereas job opportunities play a more prominent role in attraction. Overall, the data show that this talent pool primarily values quality of life factors that center on economic opportunities, the ability to raise children, and well-being.

This volume focuses on questions of Greek and non-Greek cultural interaction in the eastern Mediterranean and the ancient Near East during a broadly defined Hellenistic period from 400 BCE–250 CE. While recent historiographical emphasis on the non-Greek cultures of the eastern Mediterranean is a critical methodological advancement, this volume re-examines the presence of Greek cultural elements in these areas. The regions discussed—Asia Minor, Egypt, the Levant, and Mesopotamia—were quite different from one another; so, too, were the cross-cultural interactions we can observe in each case. Nevertheless, overarching questions that unite these local phenomena are addressed by leading scholars in their individual contributions. These questions are at the heart of this volume: Why did the non-Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean engage so closely with Greek cultural forms and political and cultural practices? How did this engagement translate into the daily lives of the non-Greek cultures of Asia Minor, the Levant, Mesopotamia, and Egypt? Local engagement differed from region to region, but some elements, such as local forms of the polis and writing in the Greek language, were attractive for many of the non-Greek communities from fourth-century Anatolia to second-century Babylon. The Greek empires and the Greek communities of the Eastern Mediterranean, too, were transformed by these local interpretations. The presence of adapted, changed, and locally interpreted Greek elements deeply entrenched in each community’s culture are for us the many forms of Hellenisms, but it is ultimately these categories, too, that this volume wishes to examine.

The forces and factors driving regional migration have become more complex over time, and traditional explanations for the motivations, attraction, and selection of migrants are no longer sufficient in the study of migration to the Persian Gulf. Qatar, which in the last decade has emerged as one of the Middle East’s fastest-growing economies, provides a sound case study for discussing some of the emerging dynamics of regional labor migration. This chapter examines Arab-origin migration to Qatar, reviewing how the state has negotiated the entry and control of “alien” Arabs. The chapter examines the evolution and transformation of migration patterns to the Gulf Cooperation Council, and assesses policies adopted by the states to better manage their regional labor markets and control the flow of foreigners. Particular attention is given to scrutinizing how and why Qatar has become more selective and politicized in negotiating labor migration, and how this has impacted the Arab expatriate population.

Regional anesthesia and analgesia provide attractive options for patients undergoing major orthopedic procedures. The use of anticoagulation medications in the elderly patient population and in patients with cardiovascular risks is very common. The guidelines from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) and other societies have been adopted widely over many years. The guidelines provide a basis for adequate delay intervals between dosing of medications and performing neuraxial or peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs), thus allowing for safer practice of regional anesthesia. Following guidelines never eliminates risk, but it allows balanced clinical practice by physicians in regard to the risks and benefits for individual patients.

In chronological studies ranging from the Early Archaic to the Late Mississippian periods, contributors portray the rapids as at times a boundary between Native American groups living upstream and downstream and at other times a hub where cultures converged and blended into a distinct local identity. The essays analyze and track changes in stone tool styles, mortuary traditions, settlement patterns, plant consumption, and ceramic production. Together, the chapters in this volume illustrate that the Falls of the Ohio was a focal point on the human landscape throughout the Holocene era. Providing a foundation for future work in this location, they show how the region’s geography and ecology shaped the ways humans organized themselves within it and how in turn these groups impacted the area through their changing social, economic, and political circumstances.

The Eastern Pueblo region, home to numerous modern Indigenous communities and the archaeological remains associated with their ancestors, is one of the largest cultural areas in the Southwest. This terrain, including sites of extraordinary size and complexity, has been studied by archaeologists for more than 150 years, attracting the attention of such pioneers as Adolph Bandelier, A. V. Kidder, and Anna Shephard. This continuity of scholarship provides the distinctive opportunity to track long-term trends in research themes and aspects of archaeological practice. These traditions, with specific reference to the topics of migration, aggregation, and landscape, are explored in this chapter.
