This research was conducted with the aim of finding out the difficulties that were felt by high students in answering reading comprehension questions on the TOEFL test. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This research was conducted on high school students who had taken the TOEFL test. From the results of this study it was found that the biggest problem in reading comprehension in the TOEFL test was due to the lack of interest in reading high school students so they would feel bored by seeing the text in front of them and it was still difficult for high school students to find the meaning of the text due to lack of vocabulary, and lack of practice to answer questions related to reading comprehension with the lack of practice, they think that the time to answer questions is not enough. So from the research conducted it is expected to overcome these difficulties, high school students must increase their practice of reading comprehension questions both at home and at the course, and must increase interest in reading and increase vocabulary so that it is easier to work on problems in the reading comprehension section. Readers have certain expectations. Out of any given narrative we expect an introduction, body and conclusion. English words should flow logically one after the other, running from the left to right, in straight lines along the page. Any interruption to this linear process of reading may raise a range of emotional responses, whether it be confusion, anger, awe or insight. Early resistance to a linear reading experience is evident in Laurence Sterne’s 1759-1767 novel The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman. Unfolding over the course of nine volumes, this narrative is frequently interrupted with unusual visual and typographic experiments that remain puzzling and intriguing to readers to this day. Likely the most expensive and ambitious of Sterne's experiments is the third volume’s marbled page; a single page coated front and back in a layer of marbled paint, painstakingly and seamlessly constrained within the margins of the text-block. This paper explores the impact of these experiments on the reading experience, with particular attention to the marbled page, by looking towards the reception of Sterne in the contemporary work of book artist Tom Phillips. Despite being raised in the same discussions as examples of works that are intensely aware of their own form, there appears to be little analysis of the connection between Sterne and Phillips. Exploring the reception of Sterne in Phillips’ A Humument illuminates not only how Phillips references Sterne, but also how the very form and design of his work emulates a similar resistance to the linearity of reading and literate culture. WHAT ARE WE REALLY TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT THE STATE OF READING? AND WHAT DO WE HOPE TO LEARN FROM THE Answers to that question? Confirmation of deeply held prejudices, or a better understanding of what reading means in digital cultures? We need to pose those questions right up front because the debate about the state of reading has been precipitated by the increasing ubiquity of the e-book, even though reading culture has been undergoing massive infrastructural changes for over a decade in the United States. The public discourse on the state of reading and on whether it has a viable future has focused on the future of the book and of literary reading now that e-books have apparently changed everything. The state of reading, as such, is not at stake because it doesn't seem likely that firemen from Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 will be swinging by your place anytime soon to torch your books and replace them with a well-appointed wall screen, eliminating reading forever in favor of mindless viewing. People will keep reading, if only to take in the endless text that comes at them on their various screens, from the ones on the wall to the ones they carry around with them everywhere on their portable devices. Try looking at those screens without reading. No, it's clear from the assumptions that underpin the end-is-near pronouncements about the e-book that there's reading and then there's reading and that when people talk about the future of reading, they're worried about whether readers worthy of the name will continue reading literary fiction in the twenty-first century. But that isn't a very interesting question because it imagines the act of reading in such an ahistorical manner, curled up in a well-upholstered time warp, far from the unruliness of contemporary reading cultures.

Abstract Introduction Standardized packaging was phased in between May 2016 and May 2017 in the United Kingdom and July 2017 and July 2018 in Norway. In both countries, the health warnings on packs prior to standardized packaging being implemented were from the former Tobacco Products Directive library of warnings (text warnings covering 43% of the pack front and pictorial warnings covering 53% of the pack reverse). The warnings on packs, postimplementation, were from the current Tobacco Products Directive library of warnings (novel pictorial warnings covering 65% of the pack front and reverse) for the United Kingdom but unchanged in Norway. Aims and Methods Longitudinal online surveys were conducted prior to standardized packaging (United Kingdom: April–May 2016; Norway: May–June 2017) and postimplementation (United Kingdom: September–November 2017 and May–July 2019; Norway: August–September 2018). We explored smokers’ response to the on-pack warnings (salience, cognitive reactions, and behavioral reactions). Results In the United Kingdom, noticing warnings on packs, reading or looking closely at them, thinking about them, thinking about the health risks, avoidant behaviors, forgoing cigarettes, and being more likely to quit due to the warnings significantly increased from waves 1 to 2, and then decreased from waves 2 to 3, but remained higher than at wave 1. In Norway, noticing warnings, reading or looking closely at them, thinking about them, thinking about the health risks, and being more likely to quit due to the warnings significantly decreased from waves 1 to 2; avoidant behaviors and forgoing cigarettes remained unchanged. Conclusions The inclusion of large novel pictorial warnings on standardized packs increases warning salience and effectiveness. Implications Two longitudinal online surveys in the United Kingdom and Norway explored the impact of standardized packaging on warning salience and effectiveness. That warning salience and effectiveness only increased in the UK postimplementation, where standardized packaging was implemented alongside new larger pictorial warnings on the pack front and reverse, and not in Norway, where standardized packaging was introduced but older smaller text warnings (pack front) and pictorial warnings (pack reverse) were retained, highlights the importance of removing full branding and introducing stronger warnings simultaneously.

This study aims at investigating how the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique can improve the students’ reading skill at the English Language Department, FKIP, Muhammadiyah University of Mataram. The problem found in the fourth-semester students is that they have low ability in comprehending the text. The TPS technique is offered by the researcher to solve the problem. Later on, the design of this research was classroom action research adopted from Kemmis & McTaggart which goes through a cycle that consists of four stages namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. At the cycle 1, the students failed to meet the criteria of success because only 14 (fourteen) out of 30 (thirty) or 47% students who got the minimum passing grade 75 (seventy-five) and the average score was 67. It meant that the study must be continued to the next cycle. At last, in the cycle 2 met the criteria of success in which 67% students or 20 (twenty) out of 30 (thirty) students met the minimum passing grade 75 and the average score was 72. Beside gaining improvement in the reading score, the students also seemed enthusiastic in thinking, pairing and sharing their ideas. They stated that this technique could encourage and motivate them in thinking, exploring and sharing their opinion and ideas. This technique is also good to enhance cooperation with other people. Finally, TPS technique also able to increase the students’ confidence to share their ideas in front of many people.

Mitiarjuk, who has been called the “accidental Inuit novelist” (Martin, 2014), began writing Sanaaq in the mid-1950s and was “discovered” in the late 1960s by a doctoral student of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Bernard Saladin d’Anglure took up this text as his anthropology thesis topic, guided its completion, arranged for its 1984 publication in Inuktitut syllabics, and in 2002 published a French translation; his own former student, Peter Frost, has recently (2013) translated the French version into English. Without the training and tools that would equip an outsider to appreciate Inuit writing and the oral traditions from which it arises, and to judge it on its own merits, scholarly assessment by other than specialist anthropologists or ethnographers has often been felt to be beyond the reach of southerners. Nonetheless, a younger generation of literary scholars such as Keavy Martin, inspired by the work of J. Edward Chamberlin, Robert Allen Warrior and Craig Womack, are working to redress such attitudes. Bringing to bear for the first time the perspective of translation studies, this paper will suggest some ways we can move from ethnography’s purported aim of a systematic study of people and cultures to a rigorous and ethical study of these translated texts, reading them explicitly asliterature, as well as (and perhaps more importantly) asliterary translations.

The author undertakes the presented deliberations for two reasons. Perception, remembering and learning are important for the teaching process at the university regardless of the passage of time. Both the lecturer and the student are interested in the effective acquisition of content. Multimodality as an attribute of the prevailing products of contemporary culture should be the subject of interest for discourse linguistics. The author’s research goal is to examine the effectiveness of font colours used in academic Power Point slides. In a multimedia presentation as a form of a lecture, a public reception takes place, alongside listening with reading and watching. The synergy of the spoken word and the bit-based text occurs. The author puts forward the claim that colour can be a factor in supporting or losing the listener’s directional attention. The second claim is that a colourful area, or a background for a printed text, is different from the colour of the font used in a text that students are required to read and watch from a distance. When the lecturer stands in front of the audience, they can manage its attention through various means. One of them is visualization in the form of the font colour choice within the slide. The article is a proposal of a certain type of research, but the author also presents the results of an experiment. Its results allow to reject the dominant role of the text placed on the slide. PurposeWith the rapid development of digital humanities, some digital humanities platforms have been successfully developed to support digital humanities research for humanists. However, most of them have still not provided a friendly digital reading environment and practicable social network analysis tool to support humanists on interpreting texts and exploring characters’ social network relationships. Moreover, the advancement of digitization technologies for the retrieval and use of Chinese ancient books is arising an unprecedented challenge and opportunity. For these reasons, this paper aims to present a Chinese ancient books digital humanities research platform (CABDHRP) to support historical China studies. In addition to providing digital archives, digital reading, basic search and advanced search functions for Chinese ancient books, this platform still provides two novel functions that can more effectively support digital humanities research, including an automatic text annotation system (ATAS) for interpreting texts and a character social network relationship map tool (CSNRMT) for exploring characters’ social network relationships.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopted DSpace, an open-source institutional repository system, to serve as a digital archives system for archiving scanned images, metadata, and full texts to develop the CABDHRP for supporting digital humanities (DH) research. Moreover, the ATAS developed in the CABDHRP used the Node.js framework to implement the system’s front- and back-end services, as well as application programming interfaces (APIs) provided by different databases, such as China Biographical Database (CBDB) and TGAZ, used to retrieve the useful linked data (LD) sources for interpreting ancient texts. Also, Neo4j which is an open-source graph database management system was used to implement the CSNRMT of the CABDHRP. Finally, JavaScript and jQuery were applied to develop a monitoring program embedded in the CABDHRP to record the use processes from humanists based on xAPI (experience API). To understand the research participants’ perception when interpreting the historical texts and characters’ social network relationships with the support of ATAS and CSNRMT, semi-structured interviews with 21 research participants were conducted.FindingsAn ATAS embedded in the reading interface of CABDHRP can collect resources from different databases through LD for automatically annotating ancient texts to support digital humanities research. It allows the humanists to refer to resources from diverse databases when interpreting ancient texts, as well as provides a friendly text annotation reader for humanists to interpret ancient text through reading. Additionally, the CSNRMT provided by the CABDHRP can semi-automatically identify characters’ names based on Chinese word segmentation technology and humanists’ support to confirm and analyze characters’ social network relationships from Chinese ancient books based on visualizing characters’ social networks as a knowledge graph. The CABDHRP not only can stimulate humanists to explore new viewpoints in a humanistic research, but also can promote the public to emerge the learning interest and awareness of Chinese ancient books.Originality/valueThis study proposed a novel CABDHRP that provides the advanced features, including the automatic word segmentation of Chinese text, automatic Chinese text annotation, semi-automatic character social network analysis and user behavior analysis, that are different from other existed digital humanities platforms. Currently, there is no this kind of digital humanities platform developed for humanists to support digital humanities research.

Introduction. The A.V. Burdukov and T.A. Burdukova family archive (Form 21) kept at the Scientific Archive of the Kalmyk Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences contains unpublished and unanalyzed materials containing data on the scientific and social activities of the two outstanding scholars Alexei Vasilyevich Burdukov and his daughter Taisiya Alekseevna Burdukova. These materials include lecture notes and study programs. The materials from archive file No. 158 are of particular interest, they include two manuscripts of the above mentioned authors. The texts of the documents are written in a notebook, on the front side of the notebook the text was written by Alexey Vasilyevich, whereas on the back the text was written by Taisia Alexeyevna. The manuscript by A. V. Burdukov is a summary of the report for a meeting of the Political Circle of the Leningrad Oriental Institute on the topic “The Party during the period of factions (1907–1910)”, which was scheduled on April 1, 1936. The purpose of this article is to introduce into scientific circulation the text of the manuscript written by T. A. Burdukova — “Mongolian and Oirat Language Study Program” for the 1945–1946 academic year. The text of the manuscript is written in blue ink, it has faded in places which makes it difficult to read the manuscript. The text contains the author’s corrections and insertions. The text of the Program shows the topics Taisiya Alekseevna intended to convey to the students and how she planned to develop their skills in the Mongolian and Oirat language proficiency (in the old-written and modern aspects), the study of written sources, the ability to work with scientific literature and publications. Also, the teacher planned to instill in the audience a habit of reading non-fiction and fiction literature, to teach them analyze the material they have read. The study program includes approaches to teaching students, developing their skills of working with sources and literature in the Mongolian and Oirat languages, all these determine the value and significance of the manuscript by T.A. Burdukova.

The purpose of this study is to describe from a didactic point of view how teachers work with reading aloud and reading comprehension strategies. This is based on the fact that if the teacher does not always involve reading strategies in reading that develop students' reading comprehension, it can lead to reading difficulties. At the end of third grade, a goal is also for pupils to have developed a basic reading comprehension. There is also a lack of research on Swedish reading education. In this study, the following questions are based:  What reading comprehension strategies does the reading aim to develop among pupils and how do teachers reason about their teaching?   Do teachers use a working material when they teach reading aloud, and how do teachers reflect on it?  The survey is based on observations and an interview and teachers' speech documents. The theoretical framework of the study builds Barbro Westlund's teori on reading aloud and reading comprehension strategies. The results of the survey show that the reading is a working method and reading comprehension strategies are included. Teachers need to discuss new word meaning and let pupils predict what the text will be about by looking at the title and the book's illustrations. The teacher should allow pupils to summarize and discuss questions that the text may have raised with the pupil. The pupils should also be involved by connecting the text to their own experiences and answering thought-developing questions. This can make it easier for the teacher to start reading on the basis of a work material that has a clear connection to reading comprehension strategies in order to be able to conduct a teaching where more pupils develop a basic reading comprehension at the end of year three.

Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Opening to passion as an unsettling, transformative force; extending desire to the text, expanding the self, and dissolving its boundaries; imagining pleasures outside the norm and intensifying them; overcoming loss and reaching beyond death; being loyal to oneself and defying productivity, resolution, and cohesion while embracing paradox, non-linearity, incompletion. These are some of the possibilities of lyric that this book explores by reading Petrarch’s vernacular poetry in dialogue with that of other poets, including Guido Cavalcanti, Dante, and Shakespeare. In the Epilogue, the poet Antonella Anedda Angioy engages with Ossip Mandel’štam and Paul Celan’s dialogue with Petrarch and extends it into the present.

This essay focuses on the ‘voice’ as it sounds in a specific type of recordings. This recordings always reproduce a poet performing a poem of his/her by reading it aloud. Nowadays this kind of recordings are quite common on Internet, while before the ’90 digital turn it was possible to find them only in specific collection of poetry books that came with a music cassette or a CD. These cultural objects, as other and more ancient analogic sources, were quite expensive to produce and acquire. However, all of them contain this same type of recoding which share the same characteristic: the author’s voice reading aloud a poem of his/her. By bearing in mind this specific cultural objet and its characteristics, this study aims to analyse the «intermedial relation» that occur between a poetic text and its recorded version with the author’s voice. This «intermedial relation» occurs especially when these two elements (text and voice) are juxtaposed and experienced simultaneously. In fact, some online archives dedicated to this type of recording present this configuration forcing the user to receive both text and voice in the same space and at the same time This specific configuration not just activates the intermedial relation, but also hybridises the status of both the reader, who become a «reader-listener», and the author, who become a «author-reader». By using an interdisciplinary approach that combines philosophy, psychology, anthropology, linguistics and cognitive sciences, the essay propose a method to «critically listening» some Spanish poets’ way of vocalising their poems. In addition, the book present Phonodia web archive built at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice as a paradigmatic answer to editorial problems related to online multimedia archives dedicated to these specific recordings. An extent part of the book is dedicated to the twenty-eight interviews made to the Spanish contemporary poets who became part of Phonodia and agreed in discussing about their personal relation to ‘voice’ and how this element works in their creative practice.

"Ah, if only I were not so alive and so crowded with things, what a book I would write […] but there's so little time […]. There's lots of time to map them out, that's true, but it's not enough." This is the voice of the protagonist of Convalescenza, one of the stories in this book that – thanks to the painstaking editorial attention of Silvia Fantacci – presents the prose written by Ruggero Jacobbi starting from his precocious youth through to the Sixties. The nine sections, recording fragments of memories, vestiges of mystery and bitter solitude, meander between cinema and theatre, revoke the faces of the war, recall the figures of writers and friends, suggest new approaches to reading. The evocation of Brazil, where Jacobbi spent the most important fifteen years of his life, is not lacking: a country "so big as to drive you crazy" with its magical rites, its rhythm, its culture (the music of Villa-Lobos, Vinícius de Morais and Dorival Caymmi and the poetry of his friend Murilo Mendes). The meticulous notes and the appendix at the end of the book illustrate the history of each text and offer a reconstruction of the projects for novels and stories that were left unfinished and have now finally been transferred from the mind and desk of the writer into book form.

This chapter recounts a highly public—and widely publicized—event on June 7, 1983 that catapulted the twenty-three-year-old Kernis into the national spotlight. At 8:00 that evening, in Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, in front of an audience of nearly a thousand, the New York Philharmonic spent an hour reading through and rehearsing Kernis's “dream of the morning sky” (Cycle V), conducted—and critiqued—by music director Zubin Mehta. Nearly every biographical sketch of Kernis cites this event, with varying degrees of accuracy. Major national publications ran stories about it at the time as well. Most critics gave little more than generalized descriptions of Kernis's score. One called it “intoxicatingly beautiful”; a second found its finale “soaring and rhapsodic”; a third called it “rich and imaginative” but “a little spoiled at the last by the rhetorical insistence of the pantheistic text.”

Vamsa is a dynamic genre of Buddhist history filled with otherworldly characters and the exploits of real-life heroes. These narratives collapse the temporal distance between Buddha and the reader, building an emotionally resonant connection with an outsized religious figure and a longed-for past. The fifth-century Pali text Mahāvamsa is a particularly effective example, using metaphor and other rhetorical devices to ethically transform readers, to stimulate and then to calm them. Reading the Mahāvamsa advocates a new, literary approach to this text by revealing its embedded reading advice (to experience samvega and pasada) and affective work of metaphors (the Buddha's dharma as light) and salient characters (nagas). Kristin Scheible argues that the Mahāvamsa requires a particular kind of reading. In the text’s proem, special instructions draw readers to the metaphor of light and the nagas, or salient snake-beings, of the first chapter. Nagas are both model worshippers and unworthy hoarders of Buddha’s relics. As nonhuman agents, they challenge political and historicist readings of the text. Scheible sees these slippery characters and the narrative’s potent and playful metaphors as techniques for refocusing the reader’s attention on the text’s emotional aims. Her work explains the Mahāvamsa’s central motivational role in contemporary Sri Lankan Buddhist and nationalist circles. It also speaks broadly to strategies of reading religious texts and to the internal and external cues that give such works lives beyond the page.

For many readers, the perspectives of Plato and Thucydides are fundamentally incompatible. Plato’s authentic philosophers allegedly occupy an unchanging world of intellectual forms or ideas. Thucydides’ world is passionate and disrupted. If we agree with these assessments, we find two authors speaking such different languages that prospects for dialogue between them seem impossible. I want to challenge that conclusion by suggesting that we can read Thucydides and Plato more dialogically. I try to show how each author opens possibilities for dialogic engagement with his own text and then indicate areas of plausible exchange between them. This interactive reading avoids the binary frames of reference of abstract and illusory peace or ongoing and inescapable war, drawing attention to experiences in need of continued intellectual negotiation and opening spaces for practical improvement. Beyond expanding our understanding of these authors, such mutual readings help us to appreciate their contributions to conversational political theory.

Reasoning with autobiography is a way to self-knowledge. We can learn about ourselves, as human beings and as individuals, by reading, thinking through, and arguing about this distinctive kind of text. Reasoning with Edmund Gosse’s Father and Son is a way of learning about the nature of the good life and the roles that pleasure and self-expression can play in it. Reasoning with Siegfried Sassoon’s Memoirs is a way of learning about transformative experience, self-alienation, and therefore the nature of the self. Good Lives develops and defends this claim, by answering a series of questions. What is an autobiography? How can we learn about ourselves from reading one? On what subjects does autobiography teach? What should we learn about them? In particular, given that autobiographies are narratives, should we learn something about the importance of narrative in human life? Could our storytelling about our own lives make sense of them as wholes, unify them over time, or make them good for us? Could storytelling make the self? The overall aim of the book is a critique of narrative and a defence of a self-realization account of the self and its good. As it pursues that, the book investigates the wide range of extant accounts of the self and of the good life, and defends pluralist realism about self-knowledge by reading and reasoning with autobiographies of self-discovery, martial life, and solitude. It concludes: autobiography can be reasoning in pursuit of self-knowledge; each of us is an unchosen, initially opaque, seedlike self; our good is the development and expression of our latent capacities, which is our individual self-realization; self-narration plays much less role in our lives than some thinkers have supposed, and the development and expression of potential much more.

This chapter aims to show that in the Philosophy of Subjective Spirit, Hegel develops a thoroughly ‘detranscendentalized’ account of the human person as the ‘concrete’ flesh-and-blood subject of knowledge and action, an account that deserves much more attention than it has received. Reconstructing Hegel’s holistic picture of the human person as the ‘concrete subject’ of knowing and acting requires a proper understanding of the structure of the text, which on a simple linear reading appears fragmentary and confusing. This chapter focuses on the Psychology section, and the thematically closely connected Phenomenology section. It first reconstructs the ‘parallel architectonics’ of the Phenomenology and Psychology, the understanding of which is essential for comprehending the substantial views Hegel puts forth in them. It then draws on this reconstruction and introduces central elements of Hegel’s account of the human person as the concrete subject of knowledge and action as it unfolds in the text.

The late Justice Scalia relished pointing to departures from text as departures from the Constitution, but in fact his jurisprudence relied on unwritten ideas. As textualism has become more prominent with the elevation of Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett to the Supreme Court—jurists in the mold of Scalia—it is crucial to reveal the unwritten ideas that drive textualist readings of the Constitution. Our deepest debates about America’s written Constitution are not about constitutional text but about the unwritten ideas and understandings that guide our reading of text. This fact is obscured by the public understanding of textualism and originalism as put forward by its most prominent judicial advocates. The (Un)Written Constitution makes these ideas visible by turning to the practices of Supreme Court justices and political actors in interpreting the Constitution over more than two centuries. From founding debates about freedom of speech and religion to contemporary arguments about judicial review, the separation of powers, same-sex marriage, and partisan gerrymandering, this work highlights the too-often unacknowledged ideas that animate our debates about the written Constitution. Contrary to textual jurists, these recurrent debates are not about whether to follow the text; they are disputes about what fidelity to the text requires. How do we weigh and balance different textual provisions and see them as part of a constitutional whole? The text does not answer such questions. This book illustrates that moving beyond the text is an inescapable feature of interpreting America’s written Constitution.

Abstract This paper is concerned with how the spatial distribution of written informings in a serious game activity at an interactive tabletop (ITT) induces participants to read aloud interactionally relevant information to each other in the process of co-constructing a shared understanding. Engaging in an unfamiliar game activity, the participants are all equally dependent on written informings from the interface that serve as a game manual and provide crucial information for jointly achieving the game task(s). When it comes to making use of these written informings, we find the participants to read them aloud, making them accountable within the group. Our findings from multimodal video analysis of two reading-aloud cases suggest that the written informing’s directionality and distribution (here, either designed as ‘distributed’ or ‘shared’ among the interface) regulate the participants’ access to information. And that participants who cannot visually access the information they are interested in reading (aloud) co-organize fine-grained joint successive actions build on and actualized by read-aloud utterances. These joint actions allow them to align their orientation and share their understanding of game activity-relevant content.

Chapter 2 argues that literary epigrams that represent the process of reading an inscription provide evidence for the reading of inscribed epigrams in pre-Hellenistic times. Epigrams of all periods ‘project’ readings (and viewings): composers imagined reading as a speech situation in front of the inscribed object, and they wrote features of that situation into the text so as to fit or guide future readings. Two such features are deixis construed to fit vocal readings and description of the object intended to guide viewers’ responses, thus a projection of reading that complements viewing. This chapter examines deixis (first-person and dialogic) and description (ecphrastic dialogues and lists of dedicated objects) in literary epigrams that represent the projection of reading as successful, that is, an inscription being read. The chapter argues that, in comparable ways, formally similar projections in older inscribed epigram were meant to, and regularly did, fit or guide reading.

This chapter contends that while the verbal content of novels forces readers to empathize with other minds, the material heft of the book allows them to block each other out. Moreover, the unrepresentability of reading becomes a proxy for the incredibility of selfhood. The wedge that novels drive between the outside of books and the interiority of readers, or between material cover and verbal content, forces the genre to choose between describing the look of reading and its feel. In coding the handling of books as authentic and the reading of texts as a front, Anthony Trollope's comedies of manners upstage textually occasioned absorption by bibliographically assisted repulsion; but, more crucially, they abdicate any attempt to plumb psychological depths. Whenever the novel juxtaposes competing vocabularies in which to describe a printed object, it stages questions about the relation of the inner life to the object world.

This chapter discusses the act of reading text. In a valid and logical response to the cultural and institutional changes taking place, Media Studies started to look at the rise of e-media and its impact on the construction and consumption of media products. Always looking to be a contemporary subject, this refocus allowed teachers and students an opportunity to engage with the new institutional structures and audience behaviours. The subject changed its terminology and no longer focused on 'texts' but on 'media products'. This shift in the discourse identified that the act of 'reading' the-media had become a secondary consideration. This move away from what was seen as an 'old fashioned' textual focus has meant that students are often having to deal with complex ideas about how the-media works without first developing a confident analytical skills-base. The chapter then looks at the act of reading television, literary texts, 'high art' on TV, and games and beyond. Providing different reading experiences for students is the first step to helping them develop an appreciation for the complex art of reading.

This article discusses the benefits of theatrical texts in language courses for beginners. These original, fun, and yet challenging materials help learners develop linguistic and intercultural competencies and transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and cooperation. Specifically, this article examines the use of Jean Tardieu’s (2000/1955) short comedy Finissez vos phrases! in a French course for beginners at university level. The particularities of this play are its brevity and the incompleteness of its dialogues. I argue that studying Tardieu’s (2000/1955) comedy allows learners to develop their communication skills by reading the whole play, watching a performance of the play, completing the dialogues, and performing their new version in front of the class. Moreover, Finissez vos phrases! familiarises learners with French conversational conventions and encourages them to think about the effectiveness of language. It also enhances their cooperative skills, lets them express their creativity and, ultimately, offers them a playful approach to learning French.

The purpose of this study is to design and fabricate the micro-scaled inertial beam with its readout circuit in a system-on-chip package. The circuit includes a driver, a front-end converter, a feed-trough reduction unit, a square-wave converter and a phase detector. In the process of signal reading, the sensor is first driven by a DDS module and power amplifier, and then sense the vibrations by piezo-resistivity. The piezo-resistivity is detected by a Wheatstone bridge circuits. The carried signal of modulation is processed by a Wheatstone bridge circuits. An instrumentation amplifier adjusts the gain to the appropriate amplitude. The circuit with reduction on feed-through noise increases the SNR. Square wave conversion circuit and PFD process the signal and the driver reference signal to detect phase difference. The data of phase difference is counted into a microcontroller dsPIC4011 and then the data being transmitted to the computer by RS232 to a USB adapter. Finally, the whole circuit is implemented by using TSMC 0.35 2P4M process and one-step postprocessing.

Aim/Purpose: In many public and academic libraries, ebooks are being pushed on users mainly due to budgetary and space needs even though readers are still showing a strong preference for print books. Background: Many librarians are focusing on how to get readers to use ebooks when they really should be considering how ebooks fit into learning, whether formal or self-learning, and the preferences that readers show for one format over the other. Library collections since the 1960s have generally focused on a strategy of “give them what they want,” but in the case of ebooks, there seems to be a trend of trying to force ebooks on users. Methodology: A survey was given to undergraduate and graduate students at the University of South Florida. Contribution: Our research findings fit with current data that shows a decline in popularity of ebooks and a continued popularity of print books. We would like to convince members of the academy to think about this issue and question the ebooks plans that libraries have on their campuses. Findings: Both undergraduates and graduates strongly preferred print over electronic in the case of textbooks and books for leisure reading. Only journal articles were preferred in electronic form, but from the comments it was evident that articles were printed out and the student used the print copy for studying and research purposes. Reference books were split 50/50 in preference for electronic versus print. Recommendations for Practitioners: Librarians and teachers cannot assume that just because students use their smart-phones that they prefer ebooks. Recommendation for Researchers: More research is needed on this subject before libraries become too dependent on purchasing large ebook packages from vendors rather than the selection of print books. Future Research: Now that this paper has advanced our understanding of user preferences for books versus ebooks, we wish to expand our research to faculty and widen the geographical areas covered.

Bearing chamber of a gas turbine engine is generally sealed by pressurized air, separating lubricant from the other zones of the engine. Heat transfer from the wall to air/oil mixture is a challenging engineering problem; predicting heat transfer rate from bearing chamber to oil is important to avoid oil coking and oil fires under high rotational speeds, pressure levels and turbine inlet temperatures. In this study, the inner wall temperature of bearing chamber which is located at the center of front engine structure was investigated numerically. The numerical study involved mainly two thermal modelling methods having two different empirical correlations was performed with finite element solver in order to calculate heat transfer on the wall. First method was based on rotational Reynolds number and Prantl number, in addition to these numbers second one, which is suggested in the literature, is based on oil related and sealing air related Reynolds number, mixture temperature and mixture mass flow. Second approach considers existence of a mixing of gaseous and liquid flow in the core flow unlike first modelling approach. The thermal model was solved by finite element solver and numerical model, assumptions were described with thermal boundary conditions. On the other hand, wall and air thermocouple readings were taken through engine test from the bearing chamber for real engine operating conditions having mainly idle, cruise and maximum power. DN number ranges from 712564 to 2742404, sealing air flow ranges from 46 to 78 g/s and oil flow ranges 22 to 40 g/s for these conditions. The calculated heat transfer coefficients were presented and discussed. The wall temperature predictions of the thermal models, and test measurements were compared. The comparison revealed that analysis results obtained with both correlations were in reasonable agreement with the test. In overall, the second approach predicted metal temperature slightly better at the front support and inner manifold wall, while first approach predicted much better at the rear support wall.

Modern CFD flow solvers can be readily used to obtain time-averaged results on industrial size turbomachinery flow problem at low computational cost and overall effort. On the other hand, time-accurate computations are still expensive and require substantial resources in CPU and computer memory. However, numerical techniques such as phase shift and time inclining method can be used to reduce overall computational cost and memory requirements. The unsteady effects of moving wakes, tip vortices and upstream propagation of shock waves in the front stages of multi-stage compressors are crucial to determine the stability and efficiency of gas turbines at part-load conditions. Accurate predictions of efficiency and aerodynamic stability of turbomachinery stages with strong blade row interaction based on transient CFD simulations are therefore of increasing importance today. The T106D turbine profile is under investigation as well as the transonic compressor test rig at Purdue. The main objective of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of unsteady flow phenomena that can lead to the next generation design of turbomachinery blading. Transient results obtained from simulations utilizing shape correction (phase shift) and time inclining methods in an implicit pressure-based solver, are compared with those of a full transient model in terms of computational cost and accuracy.

Abstract We present a novel deep learning-based workflow incorporating a reduced physics model that can efficiently visualize well drainage volume and pressure front propagation in unconventional reservoirs in near real-time. The visualizations can be readily used for qualitative and quantitative characterization and forecasting of unconventional reservoirs. Our aim is to develop an efficient workflow that allows us to ‘see’ within the subsurface given measured data, such as production data. The most simplistic way to achieve the goal will be to merely train a deep learning-based regression model where the input consists of some measured data, and the output is a subsurface image, such as pressure field. However, the high output dimension that corresponds to spatio-temporal steps makes the training inefficient. To address this challenge, an autoencoder network is applied to discover lower dimensional latent variables that represent high dimensional output images. In our approach, the regression model is trained to predict latent variables, instead of directly constructing an image. In the prediction step, the trained regression model first predicts latent variables given measured data, then the latent variables will be used as inputs of the trained decoder to generate a subsurface image. In addition, fast marching-method (FMM)-based rapid simulation workflow which transforms original 2D or 3D problems into 1D problems is used in place of full-physics simulation to efficiently generate datasets for training. The capability of the FMM-based rapid simulation allows us to generate sufficient datasets within realistic simulation times, even for field scale applications. We first demonstrate the proposed approach using a simple illustrative example. Next, the approach is applied to a field scale reservoir model built after the publicly available data on the Hydraulic Fracturing Test Site-I (HFTS-I), which is sufficiently complex to demonstrate the power and efficacy of the approach. We will further demonstrate the utility of the approach to account for subsurface uncertainty. Our approach, for the first time, allows data-driven visualization of unconventional well drainage volume in 3D. The novelty of our approach is the framework which combines the strengths of deep learning-based models and the FMM-based rapid simulation. The workflow has flexibility to incorporate various spatial and temporal data types.

The article is dedicated to the investigation of time-space measurements of journalistic works of Eugen Sverstiuk, a well-known Ukrainian journalist. In particular, the time-space continuum of his works is being discussed, which is characterized as comprehensive, continuous, filled with archetypical images which metaphorize the text, but at the same time structure it, and are beaded on the axis of time and documentarily located in the space. The logics of images initiated in the text is exaggerated by constant dwelling of the author in the time-space dimensions of the epoque, of which he was a contemporary, as well as precise knowledge of World and Ukrainian history and culture. Historical parallelism of journalism of E. Sverstiuk possesses double potential. On the one hand, the author provides arguments for confirmation of his own opinion, and on the other, he shows us historical collisions in the new aspect, which helps consider the past, better understand the present, and think of the future. Pages of his works is space for author’s considerations, which logics impresses by free transgression of the author in the time, and his ability to grasp the most essential, although sometimes precedent, sometimes sudden and forgotten, or even unknown historical facts in order to force them to resonate in the new historical realities, first of all to indicate the importance of national and the need for assigning to it more significance. Using retrospectives, E. Sverstiuk encourages us to return to the national sources and to seek in ourselves the reflections of nationality in order to return historical truth to our audience. This is what, according to E. Sverstiuk, was believed to be one of the most necessary conditions of existence to the independent state. Time-space continuum of E. Sverstiuk’s journalism is reproduction of comprehensive history as continuous process of the development of humanity, and of formation of comprehensive, total, and so to say epic reading and understanding of these processes via accentuation of reader’s attention on key events, phenomena, and facts.
