In an iterated game between two players, there is much interest in characterizing the set of feasible pay-offs for both players when one player uses a fixed strategy and the other player is free to switch. Such characterizations have led to extortionists, equalizers, partners and rivals. Most of those studies use memory-one strategies, which specify the probabilities to take actions depending on the outcome of the previous round. Here, we consider ‘reactive learning strategies’, which gradually modify their propensity to take certain actions based on past actions of the opponent. Every linear reactive learning strategy, p *, corresponds to a memory one-strategy, p , and vice versa. We prove that for evaluating the region of feasible pay-offs against a memory-one strategy, C ( p ) , we need to check its performance against at most 11 other strategies. Thus, C ( p ) is the convex hull in R 2 of at most 11 points. Furthermore, if p is a memory-one strategy, with feasible pay-off region C ( p ) , and p * is the corresponding reactive learning strategy, with feasible pay-off region C ( p ∗ ) , then C ( p ∗ ) is a subset of C ( p ) . Reactive learning strategies are therefore powerful tools in restricting the outcomes of iterated games.

This contribution explores different strategies to electrically contact vertical pillars with diameters less than 100 nm. Two process strategies have been defined, the first based on Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) indentation and the second based on planarization and reactive ion etching (RIE). We have demonstrated that both proposals provide suitable contacts. The results help to conclude that the most feasible strategy to be implementable is the one using planarization and reactive ion etching since it is more suitable for parallel and/or high-volume manufacturing processing.

IntroductionObsessive thoughts can be categorized into two subtypes, autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions. Although it has been investigated that each subtype associates with different maladaptive coping strategies, no studies have yet empirically compared the effectiveness of adaptive coping strategies on autogenous and reactive obsessions.ObjectivesIt is hypothesized that acceptance, which is a core therapeutic principle of acceptance-based cognitive therapy (ACT), is more effective on autogenous obsessions, whereas response suppression as a principle of exposure and response prevention (ERP) has a stronger effect on reactive obsessions.AimsTo compare the effectiveness of two coping strategies (acceptance and response suppression) on autogenous and reactive obsessions.MethodsA total of 164 undergraduate students completed questionnaires for obsessional thoughts and coping strategies. According to the most distressing thought, sixty subjects (n = 30 with autogenous obsession, n = 30 with reactive obsession) were randomly assigned to two groups differing in treatment conditions. Individual psychoeducation and practice were performed for four different groups (2 obsessional subtypes × 2 coping strategies).ResultsRepeated measure ANOVA demonstrated that the autogenous obsessional group showed greater distress reduction after acceptance treatment than response suppression treatment, although its effect was not statistically significant. However, the reactive obsessional group did not show the interaction effect between distress reduction and the two coping strategies.ConclusionsThe results suggest that coping strategies have differential effects on distress reduction of obsessional subtypes. Different therapeutic approaches may need to be offered to individuals with autogenous and reactive obsessions.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Multiproject scheduling aims at the generation of the baseline schedules, which has been studied for several years with the goal of minimizing the total cost of the project. In this paper, we analyzed the impact of network structure disruption, activity disruption, and resource disruption on scheduling scheme, respectively; this problem is related to the disruptions in scheduling process, which leads to a deviation between actual scheduling and baseline scheduling. The mode of the related activities is changed and the start time is reset. Because it is a NP-hard problem and involves a large number of activities, the dual population genetic algorithm is designed to solve this problem. From the results of case analysis, we find that single disruption on scheduling was local, when there was no resource conflict. While multifactor disruptions have greater effect on duration and total cost, multifactor disruptions would affect each other, so it was more complicated.

A hybrid genetic algorithm with PI and fuzzy logic controls that used to control and expand the grid performance of the power system. The model results reveal that the Static Var Compensation contribute a decent result in upholding bus voltage after the power network is in an active and steady moment, besides it has a capability of the constancy control. It can totally work as a significant plan of reactive power recompense in power networks. </span>

Purpose: To assess the relationships between reactive strength measures and associated kinematic and kinetic performance variables achieved during drop jumps. A secondary aim was to highlight issues with the use of reactive strength measures as performance indicators. Methods: Twenty-eight national- and international-level sprinters, 14 men and 14 women, participated in this cross-sectional analysis. Athletes performed drop jumps from a 0.3-m box onto a force platform with dependent variables contact time (CT), landing time, push-off time, flight time, jump height (JH), reactive strength index (RSI, calculated as JH/CT), reactive strength ratio (RSR, calculated as flight time/CT), and vertical leg-spring stiffness recorded. Results: A Pearson correlation test found very high to near-perfect relationships between RSI and RSR (r = .91–.97), with mixed relationships between RSI, RSR, and the key performance variables (men: r = −.86 to −.71 between RSI/RSR and CT, r = .80–.92 between RSI/RSR and JH; women: r = −.85 to −.56 between RSR and CT, r = .71 between RSI and JH). Conclusions: The method of assessing reactive strength (RSI vs RSR) may be influenced by the performance strategies adopted, that is, whether athletes achieve their best reactive strength scores via low CTs, high JHs, or a combination. Coaches are advised to limit the variability in performance strategies by implementing upper and/or lower CT thresholds to accurately compare performances between individuals.

The recent worldwide spread of the swine-origin H1N1 2009 influenza outbreak has resulted in its designation as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. While it appears to result in mild symptoms, concern still exists that a more severe influenza pandemic with a high case fatality ratio might arise by reassortment or mutation of the currently circulating avian influenza (H5N1) virus. Given that recently developed candidate pre-pandemic H5N1 vaccines have shown potential for cross-strain protection, we investigated alternative vaccination strategies that exploit such vaccines using an agent-based simulation model of an actual community of approximately 30 000 people in a developed country. Assuming that a two-dose vaccination regimen would be required, we examined three vaccination strategies: pre-emptive, with vaccination applied prior to emergence of human-transmissible H5N1 influenza; reactive, where vaccination was initiated immediately after the first cases in the community were diagnosed; and a ‘split’ strategy where the first dose was administered pre-emptively during the pre-pandemic phase, with the second dose administered reactively. We showed that by effectively moving the delay between first and second doses into the pre-pandemic period, the split vaccination strategy achieved a substantially better attack rate reduction than the reactive strategy. Our results for an influenza strain with a reproduction number of 1.5 suggest reactive vaccination strategies that may be applicable to the current H1N1 2009 pandemic.

In AC railway electrification systems, the impact of reactive power flow in the feeding voltage magnitude is one aspect contributing to the quality of supply degradation. Specifically, this issue results in limitations in the infrastructure capacity, either in the maximum number of trains and in maximum train power. In this paper, two reactive power compensation strategies are presented and compared, in terms of the theoretical railway infrastructure capacity. The first strategy considers a static VAR compensator, located in the neutral zone and compensating the substation reactive power, achieving a maximum capacity increase up to 50% without depending on each train active power. The second strategy adapts each train reactive power, achieving also a capacity increase around 50%, only with an increase of the train apparent power below 10%. With a smart metering infrastructure, the implementation of such compensation strategy is viable, satisfying the requirements of real-time knowledge of the railway electrification system state. Specifically, the usage of droop curves to adapt in real time the compensation scheme can bring the operation closer to optimality. Thus, the quality of supply and the infrastructure capacity can be increased with a mobile reactive power compensation scheme, based on a smart metering framework.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the practices of strategic crisis communication of most successful Croatian companies and the perception of these practices from the perspective of media. A framework of reactive strategies is applied to determine how Croatian companies from five major industries would communicate during crisis situations and how their communication is interpreted within the media as a group that conveys and presents their behavior and communication to the broader public. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative survey among 60 individuals in charge of communications in Croatian companies was conducted to identify which strategies they are likely to use when in crisis situations. In-depth interviews with 20 journalists regularly reporting on these companies were undertaken to determine their perception and experiences regarding how these companies would communicate during crisis situations. Findings Croatian companies are likely to communicate un-strategically, passively and without any risk. Journalists see the communication of the companies even more passive and reactive which seriously influences the manner they report about these companies during crisis situations. Research limitations/implications Although 60 companies and 20 journalists both represent a significantly representative sample in Croatian terms, the study provides an insight into only Croatian corporate environment. Conducting the research in different surroundings and other countries could provide additional insight. Nevertheless, the analyzed variables that influenced the selection of strategies provide notable insight for drawing conclusions on this subject. Originality/value Besides showing how analyzed companies are likely to communicate during crises, this paper provides an insight into the media’s perception of this communication. The research has shown that the media sees their communication as more passive and reactive than it actually is, which implicates a serious need of shift in communication patterns if these companies want to strive to gain mutual understanding and remotely positive attitude from the media during crisis situations.

Annotation:
Neurological manifestations in lupus can be due to active lupus disease affecting the brain or to other reasons. Reversible posterior leucoencephalopathy syndrome, primary lymphoma of the central nervous system, cerebral infections by bacteria (e.g. mycobacteria), viruses (e.g. JC virus), fungi (e.g. Cryptococcus) and parasites (e.g. Acanthamoeba), steroid-induced psychosis and reactive depression need to be excluded. Brain-reactive autoantibodies have been described as associating with neuropsychiatric lupus. The strongest associations described to date are with antiribosomal P protein and antiphospholipid antibodies. However these autoantibodies have not been shown to play significant roles in the pathogenesis. Treatment strategy for severe neuropsychiatric lupus include establishing definitive diagnosis, early identification and treatment of aggravating factors, appropriate symptomatic treatment, adequate immunosuppression, selective B-cell depletion and autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant. Systematic reviews have shown that cyclophosphamide administration is superior to pulse methylprednisolone as a maintenance therapy. Mycophenolate mofetil has been shown to have modest effect and should only be considered if cyclophosphamide cannot be administered.
