Herbarium records show that during the second half of the 19th century John Rattray collected several plant specimens at ports of call along the West African coast (Canary Islands, Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ghana, São Tomé, Príncipe, and Angola). At the herbarium (K) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England, four such specimens are databased, three of which can be examined online. At the herbarium (E) of the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, Scotland, 26 specimens are databased, twenty of which are imaged. All the specimens we examined have printed labels stating ‘Collected by John Rattray, H.M. Challenger Commission, Edinburgh’ with only a handwritten indication of the locality, for example ‘Loanda’ (Luanda, Angola). The collecting date has been omitted from the labels and there are no further details on the specimens. An investigation of the literature revealed that there is some confusion regarding the origin of the material and the identity of John Rattray, the collector.

Non-timber forest products were potential assets to generate foreign exchange. Some types of which had good prospects and were in demand in the world of trade were rattan, gondorukem, eucalyptus and cassava. The purpose of this study was to determine the rattan types diversity in Rompo Village, Lore Lindu National Park. The study was conducted in December 2018 to March 2019. This research used the "survey" method by making a plot measuring 20 m x 20 m along to 1000 m. The distance between one track to another was to 200 m. The results showed that the type of Lambang Rattan (Calamus ornatus var celebicus Becc) had the highest density of 563.75 individuals/ha, then Pai Rattan (Calamus koordersianus Becc) 229 individuals/ha, Batang Rattan (Calamus zollingeri Becc) 183 individuals/ha, Ibo Rattan (Calamus ahlidurii) 52 individuals/ha, Rattan Tohiti Botol (Calamus sp) 46.25 individuals/ha, Pute Rattan (Calamus leiocaulis Becc ex. Heyne) 11.75 individuals/ha, Karuku Rattan (Calamus macrosphaerica Becc) 10 individuals/ha and the smallest was the type of Tohiti Wulo Rattan (Calamus sp) 9.75 individuals/ha. Rattan which had the highest Importance Value Index was the Lambang Rattan (Calamus ornatus var celebicus Becc) with an Importance Value Index value of 72.14% while the rattan that had the lowest Importance Value Index was Tohiti Wulo Rattan (Calamus sp) with an INP value of 5.02%. The level of species diversity (H ') of the rattan types found in the research location was classified as moderate with an H value of 1.75. The higher the area where the rattan is grown, the fewer types of rattan that can grow and only small rattan can grow on high ground, especially Tohiti rattan and large rattan cannot be found any more like Lambang rattan.

The manufacturing of furniture using rattan is becoming common nowadays, and creates high amount of waste that can be value-added into binderless particleboards (BPB). In order to determine the suitability of the rattan waste for production of BPB, characterization of rattan waste is executed and reported in this paper. The physical properties such as density and moisture content of the rattan waste, together with its morphological study and thermal analysis as well as lignin content are evaluated. It is observed that density and moisture content for rattan waste are in the range of 0.64g/cm3, and 11.3% respectively. On the other hand, the morphology of rattan stem showed that rattan waste has various diameters of vascular bundles along with wide metaxylem vessels as well as thin-walled fibres. Thermal analysis of rattan waste explicated that rattan waste went through endothermic process with peak melting point of 177.80 °C during heating. The greatest weight loss occurred at 257.03 °C. Rattan waste has high lignin content of 21.2% that obtained through Klason lignin test. These promising preliminary results show that the rattan waste is appropriate to be used as raw materials in producing BPB.

This study investigated factors on tensile properties of rattan strips commonly used as woven materials for furniture. The factors were rattan type (bast, core, synthetic), gauge length (100, 140 mm), and unit loading speed (0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5 mm/min/mm). Experimental results indicated that natural bast and core rattan strips, when subjected to tensile loading, behaved like synthetic rattan strips in terms of their stress-strain curves showing excessive plastic deformation. There was no significant difference in ultimate tensile strain between bast and synthetic rattan strips. Bast rattan strips had the highest ultimate tensile strength and modulus of elasticity among three materials evaluated in this study, followed by core rattan and synthetic strips. The major tensile properties of natural rattan bast strips can be influenced by their gauge length adapted to their evaluation test. Unit loading speeds, in general, had no significant effects on the major tensile properties of natural bast rattan strips but tended to significantly effect the ultimate strength of synthetic rattan strips, while less significantly for strengths at the proportional limit and yield point.

Indonesian rattan was one of the natural commodity which has been traded since long time ago. As one of the natural wealth, rattan has an important role in economic growth for Indonesia. The availability of rattan is abundant in the forests of Indonesia, especially in Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Sumatra, making Indonesia a major supplier of rattan world needs, but the export value of Indonesian rattan furniture in the last few years dropped. This research aims to analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian rattan furniture to the largest European importing countries and the determinant factors affecting the competitiveness of Indonesian rattan furniture. The data used in this study were annual time series data from 2007-2016. The methods used were the competitiveness test with the approach of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA) was used to analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian rattan furniture to the European importing countries. The results showed that Indonesia had strong competitiveness in 4 European importing countries, especially the United Kingdom and Italy rattan furniture market that had a higher point of competitiveness with 141,01 & 100,95 RCA’s point respectively. This made both as a major export option of Indonesian rattan furniture in the future.

As an effort to support the national rattan industry development through appropriate innovations, the government established the National Rattan Innovation Center (PIRNas) in Palu, Central Sulawesi in 2012. However as an important institution in the rattan development industry in Indonesia, there are a number of fundamental problems related to the interior design of the PIRNas that must be fixed. The PIRNas interior design uses design thinking methods (Bob Gill 2004). The interior design result of the PIRNas will focus on strengthening the concept and the story of "The Synergy of Indonesia Rattan" adapted from big attention and appreciation of the rattan travel values, mainly its history, process and national rattan potential. The designer applies rattan material with all room elements that complementary and continuous each other in applying the concept. The implementation is expected to present a strong image in representing the identity and role of the PIRNas as a national center for rattan research and its development.

Rattan is a potential non-timber forest product. It grows in almost all parts of Indonesia, and has been widely used and traded. Indonesia as the largest rattan producer in the world supplies about 85% of world rattan needs. Bukit Lubuk Pekak Forest is part of the Production Forest Management Unit (KPHP) area, Merangin District, Jambi Province. The threat form rattan exploitation is increasing, especially in the Bukit Lubuk Pekak. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct study on the potency of rattan in that area for future conservation efforts. This study aimed to investigate rattan species in Bukit Lubuk Pekak forest, Merangin District, Jambi Province. Information of the potency of rattan is essential to support rattan industries. To complete data of rattan potency from Sumatra, an exploration in this area was carried out in July 2016 in Bukit Lubuk Pekak Forest. The study was conducted by purpossive sampling. Identification on morphological characteristics of rattan were performed on all parts of plants including fruits and seeds (if available). The results showed that there were four rattan genus in Bukit Lubuk Pekak Forest: Calamus, Daemonorops, Korthalsia, and Plectocomiopsis. They consisted of nine species, namely Calamus caesius, C. exillis, C. insignis var. longispinosus, C. laevigatus, C. tumidus, Daemonorops micracantha, D. didymophylla, Korthalsia flagellaris, and Plectocomiopsis geminiflora. Among the nine species, two species that is Calamus caesius and Daemonorops didymophylla have been cultivated for industry raw materials and drug, respectively.

Rattan on frequently attacked by the powder post beetle (Tellu, 2001). The prevention of dry powder attacks is done by preservation. The increasing resistant of rattan from insect attack can be done by an environmentally friendly preservative, the Galam wood vinegar. This research aims to determine the most effective concentration of preservative that shows the lowest attacks level of D. Farb minutus powder. The rattan used is green rattan (Calamus sp.) The concentration of preservative that are used:10%, 40%, 70% and 100%. The testing of dry powder attack used force feedback method. The effectiveness test parameters of wood vinegar to dry powder attacks included degree of protection Dinoderus minutus Farb. powder, reduction percentage of rattan weight and the mortality of dry powder Dinoderus sp for toxicological testing of wood vinegar. The test results showed that the degree of protection powder in rattan growing along with the increased concentration of preservatives. The higher the concentration of wood vinegar, the smaller the reduction of rattan weight and the higher the mortality rate of dry powder. Effects of filler loading were investigated in rattan powder-filled polypropylene composites. The composites were melt-blended using a Polydrive Thermo Haake internal mixer by incorporating rattan powder into polypropylene matrix. Rattan powders used were of average size 180µm with filler loadings ranging between 0 to 40 phr. The results indicate that tensile strength and elongation at break show a decrease with increasing filler loading. Tensile modulus increased with addition of rattan powder and eventually decreased with high filler loading. This is due to higher rattan powder content has more tendency to agglomerate causing weaker interfacial adhesion between rattan filler and polypropylene matrix. The deterioration in tensile properties was confirmed by morphological studies of fractured surfaces.

This research was conducted to determine the basic properties of rattan which are related to the possibility of its use, which are physical-mechanical properties consisting of moisture content, density, parallel tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. There were 12 species of non-commercial rattan studied, 11 species included in the small diameter rattan category (<18 mm diameter) and 1 species belonging to the large diameter rattan category (> 18 mm diameter), namely Daemonorops korthlasii Blume. Based on the results of the tests carried out, there are three species of non-commercial rattan that have similar or similar basic properties to commercial rattan, namely Calamus conirostris Becc., Korthalsia ferox Becc., and Calamus muricatus Becc.

For most Indonesia people, rattan had long been known, for personal use and trade. It started from raw materials and semi-finished trades, and later it was developed into the finished rattan product trade conducted by the wholesalers in Indonesia. In addition to the processing of rattan in Indonesia, the rattan finished-product trade has also been done widely.The trade agreement that has been made with foreign parties spur the contribution in increasing the state revenue which deserves to be taken into account. In this case, rattan application has grown in the world of Interior Design, for example as furniture and as interior accessories. The use of substitute materials, such as synthetic rattan, is now also widely used to fulfill high demand and product diversity.With the growing numbers of variants of rattan application in interior design field, a research based on qualitative research was applied. Article explores the process of research and rattan is expected to be the mediator in bringing local Indonesian culture to the global world competition. Thus, the state gait could be known more widely, and hopefully could help improving the welfare of Indonesian people into a better place.

Rattan in good quality is curently difficult to obtain and it price is quite expensive. So, it is needed to utilize non commercial rattan as substitute material. By identification of basic characteristics , such as phisical, mechanical, chemical and anatomy structure, every species of non commercial rattan can be used appropriately. The objectives of this research is to optimize utilization non commercial rattan as subtitute material and develop rattan manufacturing industry especially by identivication of the physical and mechanical characteristics. Five (5) rattan species studied here are marau (Calamus mettanensis Becc), toho (Calamus spp), galang (Daemonorops verticilaris Griff Mart), hijau (Calamus spp. and simpurut (Calamus panajuga Becc) whic derived from central Kalimantan. The research result based on physical characteristic rang for diameter is between 6,2 – 27,2 mm, inter-segment length 10 – 28 cm, moisture content 12,50 – 16,48 % and density 1,03 – 1,61 gr/cm3. While mechanical characteristics range for modulus of elasticity is between 364,03 – 1934,29 kg/cm2, compression strenth 127,55 – 441,04 kg/cm2 and tensile strength 197,34 – 394,20 kg/cm2. Those rattan species can be optimized as craft industry raw material especialy for furniture and rattan matting.Keywords: rattans, physical, mechanical, craft.

Indonesia as the world's major producer and supplier of rattan, but most of Indonesia's rattan production relies on natural rattan sources. The fact that natural rattan is generally harvested after the age of more than 4 years, is not proportional to harvesting at any time, and threatens the preservation of rattan, so research on rattan cultivation is important. This study focuses on the growth and absorption of Noko rattan seedlings varieties (Daemonorops sp.) in response of organic and inorganic fertilization. Research was conducted in the glass house of UNTAD, using factorial design of 2 (two) factors. Factor I consists of 2 (two) levels, namely: (B0) without bokashi, and (B1) bokashi 10 t / Ha. Factor II consists of 7 (seven) variations of Nitrogen and Phosphorus treatments. The results showed that the treatment of organic fertilizer and inorganic fertilizer had no significant effect on dry weight or nitrogen uptake (N) or N network. However treatment with bokashi showed a tendency of dry weight and alsoN uptake or N tissue higher than treatment without bokashi. In this study, treatment with bokashi added Urea fertilizer gives the best influence on the growth of Noko rattan seedlings.

Admittedly though the Gurensi and Boosi, and for that matter the Frafras, living in the Bolgatanga and Bongo District Council Area have flourished for nearly over five hundred (500) years, their history and traditions have for these centuries laid almost buried and forgotten. Their history has in fact been relatively neglected by comparison with the period of the Mamprusi, Gonja, and Dagomba histories. The works of early researchers, ethnologists and so forth on the Gurene and Bone speaking peoples such as Allan Wolsey Cardinall (1921), R. S. Rattray (1932), T. E. Hilton (1956, 1959) and Dr Ludwig Rapp (1967) are devoid of the oral traditions and history of these people at the local level. In the case of R. S. Rattray and A. W. Cardinall, their works are not only brief, but they appear in a rather unusual sequence.

Therefore, rattan furniture has grown has long been developed since the traditional model and developed rapidly in the era of modern design. In the period of traditional furniture, rattan furniture was viewed as cheap furniture, quickly damaged and therefore rarely used for middle-class home furnishings. With the efforts of several design lecturers who are also furniture designers, rattan furniture was then developed with a modern design approach with influence from Scandinavian furniture design. As a result, modern rattan furniture can be accepted into middle-upper class. This study aim is to examine the influence of Scandinavian furniture design particularly Danish furniture design in the early development of modern rattan furniture design in Indonesia. The influence will be describe in two ways those are product design concepts acquired from Scandinavian design media and academic influence from Indonesian designer who study in Scandinavian countries and develop the rattan furniture in Indonesia. This paper uses the comparative study method to gain an understanding and description of Indonesian rattan furniture design with the influence of Scandinavian furniture design especially Denmark. The result show that Indonesian furniture designers are able to adopt the characteristics of mdoern Scandinavian furniture design that is generally made of wood into the modern design of rattan furniture.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

Indonesia has the potential of rattan is enough large, but the value of the sale and utilization is still limited as materials for baskets, furniture, handicrafts and so on. This research purpose to obtain bending and compressure strength properties when the rattan used for substitution of iron materaial making to cement concrete building simple houses. The raw material of used for research this is rattan has done processing (preservation and drying). Cement concrete frame made of rattan and molds for casting. Concrete frame rattan incorporated in the mold and filled dough (cement: gravel: sand = 1: 2: 3 plus water as needed). Treatment was observed that the diameter rattan (A) which includes: 8 mm (a1), 10 mm (a2) and 12 mm (a3); and the distance between the iron ring (B) which includes 11 cm (b1); 15 cm (b2); and 19 cm (b3). The number of repeat 3 times. Parameters observed bending and compressure strength.The results of the research rattan diameter 8-12 mm and the distance ring iron 11-19 cm produces bending strength from 18.24 to 40.13 kg /cm2 lower than cement concrete from iron materials (95.76 to 120.36 kg / cm2); and compressure strength from 28.33 to 42.85 kg/cm2 larger than from iron cement concrete materials (20 to 34.67kg/cm2). The results of the research show bending strength from rattan lower and compressure sterngth than big concrete from iron.Keywords: rattan, cement concrete, bending strength, compressure strength

Prices of raw materials for furniture and rattan craft also be high because the prices charged for local producers to use the benchmark export price. This ministerial decree on the one side benefit exporters but the industry shut down one side.

Abstract Using export panel data for China and 24 bamboo and rattan trading partners from 2007 to 2017, this study simulates the export trade of Chinese bamboo and rattan products using a gravity model. Our results showed that economic size has a significant positive impact on the bilateral trade of bamboo and rattan products, while absolute distance between two major economic centers and population size have a significant negative impact. Furthermore, relevant Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) trade arrangements have an impact on bamboo and rattan product trade flows from China. Meanwhile, trade of bamboo and rattan between China and APEC countries such as South Korea, Canada, Russia, and Thailand shows much room for growth.

Rattan for its potential as a new type of filler was investigated in natural rubber (NR) compounds. Natural rubber (NR) compounds were prepared by the incorporation of rattan at different loadings into a natural rubber matrix with a laboratory size two roll mill. The effect of rattan loading as filler on curing characteristics, tensile properties, morphological properties using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and rubber–filler interaction of rattan filled natural rubber compound were studied in the filler loading range of 0 to 30 phr. The results indicate that the scorch time (ts2) and cure time (t90) shorten with increasing filler loading, whereas the maximum torque (MH) showed an increasing trend. As the filler loading increases, the tensile strength and elongation at break decreases whilst tensile modulus; stress at 100 % elongation and stress at 300 % elongation increased. The rubber filler interactions of the rubber compound decreased with increasing filler loading. SEM studies indicate that the increasing rattan loading weakens the rubber-rattan interactions.

Rattan was the main raw material used in rattan craft in Teluk Wetan Jepara. This research uses historical methods namely heuristic, criticism, and interpretation. The results of this study show that the rattan could be made into various craft products such as parcel baskets, bags, chairs, tables, and etc. Rattan craft in Teluk Wetan involved local workers, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs. The products had been marketed on Java, out of Java island, Europe and America. The craft development was around 1972 and still developed rapidly to this day. Rattan craft was soft skills owned by Teluk Wetan community and had an impact on the local economy. The craft existence was supported by workers, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs, both who had small and large scale. The existence of workers, craftsmen, and entrepreneurs encouraged the craft to live and develop. The existence of rattan craft made the community’s economic life of Teluk Wetan became dynamic as well as made this region became a craft center that recognized locally, regionally and nationally.

Rattan jernang (Daemonorops draco Willd.) is a type of non-timber forest product that has a high market value. To reduce dependence on natural forests, jernang rattan cultivation is important. This study aims to determine the growth response of 3 year old jernang rattan plants to light intensity under mixed stands. The study was carried out at KHDTK Kemampo, Palembang Environmental and Forestry Research and Development Center from June to July 2020. This study used an experimental method with a Non-Factoral Randomized Block Design consisting of 3 treatments with 9 replications. The treatments consisted of P1 = canopy closure 10–30% (light intensity 72.19%), P2 = canopy closure 40–60% (light intensity 55.63%), and P3 = canopy closure 70–90% (light intensity 23.39%). The results showed that the growth of jernang rattan gave a very good response to light intensity under mixed stands for all parameters observed, namely plant height, leaf midrib length and number of leaves, as well as leaf color. The best growth of jernang rattan is in light conditions with a canopy cover of 10%-30% (light intensity 72.19%). There is a positive correlation between light intensity and the growth of jernang rattan under mixed stands, that is, the higher the light intensity, the better the growth of jernang rattan.

The purpose of implementing community service is the Export Product Development Program (EPDP) to increase the quantity and quality of rattan production, and increase the sale of rattan products. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) involved as many as 2 (two) SMEs in Trangsan village, namely the Three Colors Rattan UKM, and the Wayan Rotan UKM with the problem of scarcity of raw materials and purchasing methods not optimal, equipment that is not feasible to use, layout not optimal, designs that change frequently. The solutions offered are training, including training in raw material purchasing methods, tool management training, and product design training, as well as upgrading equipment. The output of community service activities is that rattan production increased by more than 10% for three-color UKM, Rattan and 29% increase in UMKM production, Wayan Rotan.

ABSTRACTThe research was design to know the impact of chemical compound in deflexioning process of the rattan for furniture material. There are three kinds of rattan using for this research. They are manau ( Calamus manna Miq.), batang (Daemonorops robusta Warb.) and suti (Calamus ormatus BI). The chemical compounds that used in this research are Natrium Hidroksida ( NaOH) and Dimetylsulfoxside ( DMSO). The result of water content is 12,98%. and this fulfilled the requirement for the funiture material which is 14%. The higher of the NaOH and DMSO concentration used is causing the increasing of rattan density. The same effect is shown in the bending strength ( MOR) and elasticity strength ( MOE), the higher of the chemical compound concentration is cause the rattan more easy to deflex.Keywords: rattan, plastisation, deflexion NaOH, DMSO, funiture
