Que signifie affirmer qu’une université, en tant qu’institution, est, ou non, raciste ? Avec quelle conception du racisme peut-on opérer pour déterminer si les valeurs et les relations de pouvoir examinées, évaluées, transmises, défendues par l’université promeuvent une plus grande inclusivité des acteur·rice·s « sans distinction de race », ou non ? Cette question conduit à s’interroger sur la pertinence et sur le sens de la notion de racisme institutionnel lorsque l’expression est appliquée à l’institution universitaire. L’article défend une conception du racisme institutionnel qui dépasse la dichotomie entre racisme individuel et racisme systémique en insistant sur une conception dynamique et relationnelle de l’institution universitaire. Grâce aux outils de la phénoménologie critique, le racisme institutionnel à l’université est redéfini comme processus d’institutionnalisation d’habitudes ou de régularités qui produisent ou reproduisent des inégalités raciales tout en étant constituées d’expériences inaperçues.

Partant des controverses sociales et scientifiques sur l’antiracisme et ses reconfigurations, l’article examine les enjeux d’une pédagogie antiraciste renouvelée par les apports de l’éducation antiraciste et des pédagogies critiques. En nous appuyant sur l’enseignement de l’esclavage et des traites négrières, nous montrons la prédominance d’une vision antiraciste déracialisée, où les rapports de pouvoir sont invisibilisés ou dilués par une pédagogie colorblind qui, au mieux, se limite à déconstruire un a priori raciste de l’esclavage. Considérant l’usage récurrent par les élèves des catégories ethno-raciales comme un matériau pédagogique pertinent pour développer une pédagogie antiraciste critique, nous tentons d’en esquisser quelques axes en privilégiant une approche systémique et intersectionnelle du racisme, en prise avec leurs expériences sociales et scolaires.

Comme le disait James Baldwin, « L’histoire n’est pas le passé, c’est le présent. Nous portons notre histoire en nous. » Ainsi, l’esclavage est inscrit dans l’ADN des corps noirs, il fait partie de leur histoire.
Ayant commencé sa vie d’artiste sous le nom de SAMO (Same Old Shit) patronyme illustrant les traumatismes du racisme marquant les âmes noires. Cet éternel jeune homme nous interpelle : comment parler du futur, lorsqu’on ne peut se débarrasser des fantômes du passé ?
En me fondant sur la Critical Race Theory, approche qui prend notamment en compte l’expérience du racisme anti-noir, j’analyserai certaines œuvres cruciales de Basquiat, porteuses de récits, pour appréhender la société. Ces œuvres nous parlent toujours en faisant de Basquiat un prophète.
Dans Water-Worshipper, (1984), il expose l’esclavage et rompt le silence en exposant les séquelles sociales écrasantes et implacables.
Et comment ignorer sa clairvoyance alors qu’il nous parle dans Defacment?(1983) de Michael Stewart qui est une illustration des traitements des corps noirs, cette œuvre nous parle aujourd’hui des noirs assassinés, de George Floyd.

L'objectif de l'étude était de déterminer la résistance aux tiques des races Goudali et Wakwa respectivement pure sang zébu et demi-sang Brahman. Cinq taurillons de chaque race ont été mis dans un même parc pendant les mois de juillet-août. Les dénombrements de tiques ont été effectués chaque semaine pendant un mois par stade, espèce et sexe. Les résultats ont montré que les espèces adultes recueillies étaient, par ordre décroissant d'abondance : Amblyomma variegatum, Rhipicephalus lunulatus et Hyalomma spp. Les taurillons Wakwa présentaient davantage de tiques que les Goudali (en particulier A. variegatum et Hyalomma spp.) sans que cette différence soit statistiquement significative. La signification d'une variabilité intra-raciale montre qu'une sélection pour la résistance aux tiques, surtout Amblyomma variegatum, pourrait être effective. Ces observations indiquent clairement qu'une étude de plus longue haleine serait nécessaire pour déterminer l'importance réelle de la différence de populations de tiques observée chez les deux races bovines, pour évaluer les mécanismes biologiques de résistance à Amblyomma variegatum et pour estimer l'héritabilité de la résistance aux tiques.

À la frontière de Melilla, le massacre du 24 juin 2022, perpétré par des forces marocaines et espagnoles, a provoqué la mort d’au moins 27 personnes et la disparition de plus de 70 autres, a fait plusieurs centaines de blessés et au moins 100 prisonniers. Pour tenter de comprendre ces évènements qui s’ancrent dans un continuum de violences antimigratoires qui perdure en toute impunité depuis deux décennies, il faut replacer cette frontière dans sa matrice raciale et décrypter les rapports de genre en jeu. Se basant sur un long travail ethnographique mené entre 2015 et 2017, et sur une contre-enquête collective réalisée en 2023, le présent article dissèque la violence sous le prisme des rapports de race et de genre. Cette approche permet de comprendre que la reproduction constante de masculinités guerrières autour de la frontière, pour la défendre ou protester contre elle, a fait augmenter, année après année, l’intensité de la violence envers les migrants Noirs jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Cet affrontement perpétuel de masculinités militarisées à la frontière, engendré par les politiques migratoires européennes, espagnoles, et leur externalisation au Maroc, a renforcé un ordre raciste qui, inéluctablement, continue de semer la mort sans parvenir à étouffer complètement les résistances.

Abstract This article examines a 1779 legal dispute involving Pierre Chapuizet, a wealthy and well-connected sugar planter of the north province of Saint-Domingue who was denied a commission as an officer in the colonial militia due to allegations of mixed-race origin. Although the Conseil Supérieur of Cap Français had recognized Chapuizet's status as “white and unblemished” (blanc et ingénu) in 1771, the colonial administration and much of the white elite argued that his descent from a Black great-great-grandmother made him ineligible for the honor of a militia commission. This article argues that the Chapuizet affair demonstrates a shift in the boundaries of whiteness in the French Antilles. Traditional “color prejudice,” in which skin color was one factor among many others, such as wealth and family connections, gave way to modern scientific racism defined by biological descent, according to which a single Black ancestor, however remote, sufficed for exclusion from the white elite. Dr. C.K. Clarke (1857-1924) was one of Canada’s most prominent psychiatrists. He sought to improve the conditions of asylums, helped to legitimize psychiatry and established formal training for nurses.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, Canada experienced a surge of immigration. Yet – as many historians have shown – a widespread anti-foreigner sentiment within the public remained. Along with many other members of the fledgling eugenics movement, Clarke believed that the proportion of “mental defectives” was higher in the immigrant population than in the Canadian population and campaigned to restrict immigration. He appealed to the government to track immigrants and deport them once they showed signs of mental illness. Clarke’s efforts lead to amendments to the Immigration Act in 1919, which authorized deportation of people who were not Canadian-born, regardless of how many years that had been in Canada. This change applied not only to the mentally ill but also to those who could no longer work due to injury and to those who did not follow social norms.
Clarke is a fascinating example of how we judge historical figures. He lived in a time where what we now think of as xenophobia was a socially acceptable, even worthy attitude. As a leader in eugenics, therefore, he was a progressive. Other biographers have recognized Clarke’s racist opinions, some of whom justify them as keeping with the social values of his era. In further exploring Clarke’s interest in these issues, this paper relies on his personal scrapbooks held in the CAMH archives. These documents contain personal papers, poems and stories that proclaim his anti-Semitic and anti-foreigner views. Whether we allow his involvement in the eugenics movement to overshadow his accomplishments or ignore his racist leanings to celebrate his memory is the subject of ongoing debate.

Cette thèse porte sur une formation politique allemande dénommée Identitäre Bewegung Deutschland (mouvement identitaire en Allemagne), aussi connue sous le nom d'IBD. L'IBD est un groupuscule fondé en octobre 2012, mais qui s'est véritablement fait connaître en Allemagne durant l'été 2016, grâce à une action spectaculaire menée à Berlin, à la Porte de Brandebourg, un lieu emblématique de la ville. Ses fondateurs se sont inspirés de Génération identitaire, ce groupuscule français se réclamant de la Nouvelle Droite, fondé lui aussi en 2012, et dissout en 2021 par le gouvernement français. L'IBD rassemble des jeunes Allemand.e.s, lesquel.le.s se présentent comme une jeunesse sans arrière plan migratoire déterminée à se battre pour la préservation de l'identité ethnoculturelle des peuples européens. Ses membres rejettent, entre autres, l'islam et ce qu'ils appellent immigration massive, sont très actifs sur internet et les réseaux sociaux, mais aussi dans la rue. Ils tentent par divers moyens de diffuser leurs idées dans la société allemande et d'amener la population autochtone à se rallier à leur cause. Cette étude, qui s'appuie sur des sources et une méthodologie variées, tente d'apporter des éléments de réponse à trois questions centrales, celles de savoir si l'IBD est une organisation raciste, s'il s'agit d'un groupuscule xénophobe et si ce groupuscule représente une menace pour la cohabitation, sur le sol allemand et plus largement européen, entre les populations européennes « de souche » et les populations issues de l'immigration extra-européenne. L'étude analyse le groupuscule sous différents angles. Elle porte la focale sur sa genèse, son évolution dans le temps, ses acteurs et ses réseaux. Elle expose par ailleurs son idéologie, sa manière de communiquer, ses stratégies discursives et son pouvoir de nuisance. It is a very small group founded in October 2012, but which really made a name for itself in Germany in the summer of 2016, thanks to a spectacular action carried out in Berlin, at the Brandenburg Gate, an emblematic place in the city. Its founders were inspired by Génération identitaire, a French group claiming to be part of the New Right, also founded in 2012 and dissolved in 2021 by the French government. The IBD gathers young Germans together who present themselves as young people without migration background and who are determined to fight for the preservation of the ethno-cultural identity of the European peoples. Its members reject, among other things, Islam and what the call mass immigration and are very active on the internet and social networks, as well as on the streets. They use a variety of means to spread their ideas in German society and to rally the native population around their goal. This study draws on various sources and methodologies and attempts to provide answers to three central questions : Is the IBD a racist organisation ? Is it a xenophobic group ? Does the group represent a threat to the coexistence, in Germany and more widely in Europe, between native Europeans and people from non-European countries ? In this thesis the group is analysed from different angles. The focus is on its genesis, its development over the time, its players and its networks. The ideology of the group, its communication style, its discursive strategies and its power to cause harm are also outlined. A final section deals with the strategies implemented in the Federal Republic of Germany to fight the group

En 1735, cependant, l'Homo sapiens de Linné marque le début d'un nouveau discours sur les hiérarchies humaines, désormais fondées sur la « variété » physique. Cette étude veut cerner l’influence de la tradition noble sur les conceptions de la race, en Grande-Bretagne et en Irlande, au cours du long XVIIIe siècle. This study aims to identify how noble tradition influenced conceptions of race in Great Britain and Ireland during the long eighteenth century. Tracing the persistence of a ‘pureblood’ model of human superiority in the West, it traverses a vast range of historical material in order to highlight the continuity of genealogical hierarchies across multiple disciplines and over hundreds of years. The first section reviews the history of hereditary privilege as a backdrop to noble culture in eighteenth-century Britain: examining works such as Francis Nichols’s British Compendium, or, Rudiments of Honour (1727-7) and Alexander Pope’s Essay on Man (1734), it considers how nobility as a genealogical identity was accommodated in the ‘Great Chain of Being’ understanding of human hierarchy. The second section considers these same traditions in terms of the eighteenth-century ‘race’ construct: it considers the notion of ‘breeding’ in works such as the anonymous The Lady’s Drawing Room (1744) and the rhetoric of human variety in naturalist texts such as Oliver Goldsmith’s History of the Earth and Animated Nature (1774). The third and last section considers the influences of Enlightenment and the French Revolution on ideas of noble race in Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790), and the role of ‘natural’ nobility in abolitionist texts such as Anna Maria Mackenzie’s Slavery; or, the Times (1792). In short, this study demonstrates that the tradition of noble ‘race’ was, and is, a fundamental component of the human ‘race’ construct, asserting blood purity, anatomical superiority, and inimitable excellence as defining principles of human hierarchy

The marginalisation experienced by racial/ethnic minorities during pandemics such as COVID-19 and SARS illustrates the importance of diversity and inclusion in science communication and public health. With the first cases of these pandemics reported in East Asia, epidemiologic and medical communication associating them with China led to racially motivated abuse and discrimination against individuals of Asian descent and appearance. Moreover, limited linguistically diverse and culturally sensitive health communication exacerbated infection rates, disease morbidity and mortality, and knowledge gaps already experienced by various culturally and linguistically diverse populations. This chapter explores scientific and medical communication during SARS in Canada and COVID-19 in Australia, two highly multicultural countries with significant Asian minority populations. It draws upon academic literature, media articles, and government reports to illustrate biases and gaps in scientific communication towards Asians and other minority ethnicities during these pandemics, and underscores how these have compounded the vulnerabilities they are already experiencing as a result of underlying health disparities and racist attitudes. It then advances the importance of communicating science to and with ethnic/racial minorities during pandemics to ensure effective and equitable outbreak control measures, discourage discrimination, and reduce mistrust in public health systems and interventions. Although communicating in multiple languages and accounting for diverse contexts and cultures are crucial, science communication during pandemics should go further and embrace a bidirectional approach wherein members of racial and ethnic minorities are empowered to co-create and lead communication efforts towards the communities of which they are part. Through democratising health communication and empowering underrepresented minority populations, we can start to address not just health disparities experienced by racial minorities but also issues of inclusivity, diversity, and representation in science communication.

This chapter focuses on the Haitian Revolution and its brief moment of impact in France’s National Assembly. During the early portions of the Revolution, Haitian revolutionaries – former slaves – asserted their claims to the ‘rights of man’ in strong and direct ways, following up on their successful military action with petitions to the new government in France. For a moment in the midst of the two revolutions, the idea of the ‘rights of man’ reached across boundaries of race and geography, as the National Assembly voted to end slavery in Haiti and other colonies. These thin trans-Atlantic bonds did not last long, however, as the rights of man were overridden by racism, violence and, finally, the resumption of slavery. The flow of ideas back to the metropole was thus profoundly incomplete. The chapter illustrates, moreover, the dangers in interpreting the Haitian Revolution too strongly through these French terminologies. The Haitian revolutionaries who adopted the language of the rights of man were themselves few in number and unrepresentative. A far larger portion of the Haitian population identified much more strongly with a different kind of universal practice, one lacking its own theoretical canon: the process of marronage, of running away from enslaving and domineering social structures to live on their own terms in any way possible.

Abstract For More than forty years, I have had a keen interest in the evolution of American colonial and antebellum slavery and the related race relations law. I believe that I have read every published appellate case and statute on this subject from 1630 to 1865. After reflecting on those thou sands of statutes and cases and on innumerable related articles and books, I have concluded that, for those Americans in power, there were several premises, goals, and implicit agreements concerning the institution of slavery that at once defined the nature of American slavery and direcd how it was to be administered with the imprimatur of the legal process. Sometimes these premises and goals were articulated precisely in statutes, judicial opinions, and executive orders. At other times, they were implicit; since most in power understood and agreed with these pernicious propositions, it would have been superfluous to announce or codify the common understanding. But whether or not articulated as formal rules of law, there was a general consensus on principles or premises that led to the legitimization of slavery and of racism.

Richard Bertrand Spencer is a well-groomed, well-educated advocate for the creation of a “white ethno-state” in North America for a “dispossessed white race.” He has also called for “peaceful ethnic cleansing” to halt the “deconstruction” of what he describes as “white culture” and to achieve a “white homeland.” Spencer has become the most recognizable public face of the white supremacist and nationalist movements. As an ardent white supremacist and ethnonationalist, Spencer says America belongs to white people, who he claims have higher average IQs than Hispanics and African Americans, and that the latter are genetically predisposed to crime. In Spencer’s “America,” Asians, Muslims, and Jews don’t qualify as “white” either.
