Symonds, Andrew. „The clinical application of a novel instrumented wheelchair pushrim“. Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10041557/.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Sustained manual wheelchair propulsion is related to shoulder injury, which is associated with increasing age and time as a wheelchair user. Consequently, the biomechanics of manual wheelchair propulsion have been widely examined, both to quantify the demand of a task and also to guide optimisation of technique. Such analysis has incorporated assessment of push rim kinetics using instrumented wheelchair wheels. The major limitation of the instrumented wheels currently available is that they add significant weight to the wheelchair, increasing the demand on the user and altering propulsion biomechanics. This thesis presents the design and potential clinical application of a novel lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel, the ‘Sensewheel’. In this thesis, the Sensewheel is used to investigate the influence of ageing on propulsion biomechanics and to quantify shoulder joint demand during various types of over ground propulsion. Propulsion demand is quantified with the use of surface electromyography and a musculoskeletal model of the trunk and upper limbs, animated with data collected from the Sensewheel. The Sensewheel is also used to identify pushing technique differences during over ground propulsion, and also to provide real time feedback as a training intervention to improve technique. This thesis consists of a series of short clinical studies exploring the use of the Sensewheel. The design and measurement capabilities of the Sensewheel are introduced, alongside discussion of current limitations and future development requirements. The first experimental study investigates age related differences in propulsion biomechanics and muscle activity levels during wheelchair propulsion on a treadmill. The results of the study are not conclusive in supporting the theory that older wheelchair users are at greater risk of injury due to greater relative muscle demand. The second experimental study examines shoulder joint demand during level, 2.5% cross slope, 6.5% and 12% incline over ground propulsion. The results demonstrate significantly greater levels of shoulder joint demand during incline propulsion, with glenohumeral (GH) joint contact force rising above 2000N and muscle activity levels rising to 92% of maximum during the 12% incline task. The results also demonstrate a strong positive correlation between force applied at the wheelchair push rim and resultant GH joint contact force. The third experimental study compares the propulsion technique of novices and experts during the same over ground propulsion tasks. The results demonstrate that the experts are able to use the force they apply to the push rim more effectively to reduce the repetition of the task, but that during more challenging tasks this may increase shoulder joint demand. A systematic review of the literature identifies that push rate and push arc can be successfully optimised using real time feedback. The fourth experimental study describes how the Sensewheel is used to provide real time data to inform real time verbal feedback to novice non wheelchair users, with the goal of optimising push arc. The intervention is successful in increasing push arc, reducing the number of pushes required whilst maintaining shoulder joint load within the range of normal daily activity. In summary, the thesis introduces the various potential clinical applications of a novel lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel. In this thesis, the Sensewheel is used to assess the extent of the shoulder demand experienced during manual wheelchair propulsion, and to identify the importance of optimising pushing effectiveness. It is also used to successfully provide an intervention to improve propulsion technique.

Walker, Greg Delany. „Embracing failure: the life between polite and pushed“. Thesis, University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6329.

Annotation:
My name is Greg Delany Walker. I’m an MFA candidate in Theatre Arts with a specialization in Acting at the University of Iowa. The following is my thesis that addresses my artistic process as an actor. My main focus in this thesis is to unpack my beliefs about what makes good acting and how I personally achieve that. I detail many schools of thought that pair well together to seek out vulnerability in actors. Vulnerability is my chief struggle as an actor given that I have a tendency to overthink things and rely more on intellect than on passionate expression in my daily life and in my work. That tendency leads me to be polite as an actor, which has gotten in the way of my being able to reach my full potential. I discovered time and time again how important it is to understand and embody acting techniques so deeply that I can let them go. All the different techniques of analysis, physical and voice work are essential, but they need to transition to being second nature. The techniques outlined in this thesis, learned in my life and through the program at the University of Iowa, have to be so ingrained that I don’t need to think of them in the moment on stage. The key to being present on stage seems so simple in a way, but it has been a great challenge for me to fully let go of control to allow for my potential public failure and humiliation. The times that I’ve embraced failure have been the strongest moments for me as an actor because of the power of risk. My hope is that by detailing my own process and experiences, with that idea of building technique and releasing into the present moment, that others could be further empowered to do the same in acting or in life.

Annotation:
Abstract The main task for most development-intensive organisations is to create, develop and commercialise new products and services. The technology push (TP) concept is considered an important competitive advantage for companies trying to create breakthrough products. Because development processes are risky and failure rates are high, especially in the case of technology pushed projects, defined success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. The prime objective of this study is to present a compact set of TP project success factors in an information and communication technology (ICT) context. Because the literature on new product development and innovation has presented many success factors for developed products, but has done so in a way that presents the factors as having a nebulous nature, the specification of TP success factors is also presented. The success factors are also empirically validated. The goal of the validation was to determine the relevance of the success factors introduced, and potentially define new ones. The validation was performed through an empirical study with semi-structured company interviews. As a result of this study we concluded that one success factor defined through the literature review should be removed due to a lack of relevance, that the other twelve success factors were validated, and three new success factors were identified during the empirical study. Eventually fifteen TP success factors are defined and presented. The practical relevance of this study is to help firm management to recognise the real actions needed to reduce product development risks. The theoretical relevance is in helping scholars to focus on key issues when studying the key factors of breakthrough development cases
Validointi toteutettiin puolistrukturoiduilla yrityshaastatteluilla. Työn tuloksena esitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen validoinnin avulla määritellyt 15 teknologiatyöntöisten projektien menestystekijää. Tutkimuksen käytännöllinen merkitys on auttaa yritysjohtoa tunnistamaan tärkeät toiminnot tuotekehitysriskien madaltamiseksi. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen merkitys on auttaa tutkijoita keskittymään avainasioihin ja tunnistamaan menestystekijät läpimurtotuotetutkimuksessa

Salas, Susan. „Pipeline dreams| Latina/o community college students pushed out of the transfer path“. Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3708287.

Annotation:

Latinas/os represent the largest ethnic group in California and are under-represented in higher education. Latina/o student college completion rates are the lowest of any racial or ethnic group, including Whites. This study used a critical race theoretical lens to explore the experiences of 14 Latina/o community college students who were pushed out of the transfer path. Storytelling served as the foundation of this study to understand and give voice to Latina/o students' transfer path experiences. Interview data from all participants were analyzed to extract codes and develop themes within the stories. Demographic surveys were evaluated to identify student characteristics.

Findings revealed that Latina/o students were pushed out of the transfer path at four critical points: Students were pushed out as they found themselves on academic or progress probation, resulting in conditional financial aid suspensions. Some students became discouraged as they figured out the amount of courses necessary to become transfer ready. Other students attempted to transition to transferable coursework, but they were unable to pass developmental math courses. Students also reported being pushed out as they learned about the immense amount of transfer requirements, program options, and costs, which created transfer information paralysis.

Latina/o students reported feeling emotional relief after being pushed out of the transfer pathway. Earning an associate's degree or certificate was an achievable goal and students felt a sense of academic accomplishment. Students also believed that an associate's degree was a "stepping stone" on their journey through the educational pipeline.

Students noted race, class, and gender stereotyped experiences that adversely affected their transfer path experiences. Negative perceptions about their race impacted their academic performance. Erratic and limited resources-including suspension from financial aid-proved harmful to their ability to remain on the transfer path. Gender role expectations obstructed Latina women and propelled Latino men on the transfer pathway.

The findings suggest that Latina/o students were disadvantaged by community college policies and procedures. Yet, they remained committed to their educational goals. Further investigation of Latina/o student community college experiences is necessary to develop policies, procedures, and practices that will serve to strengthen their educational pathways.

Annotation:

Preschool expulsions have gained new attention in the early child care field. The disproportionate rate of Blacks boys that are expelled or "pushed out" from their child care settings suggests particular concern for exploration. Behavioral problems in early childhood have negative outcomes later in life (Keane & Calkins, 2004); therefore, it is imperative that educational systems create equitable, non-disciplinary practices, which do not marginalize or shame Black boys. This study captured the experiences of five parents of Black boys that were expelled or pushed out of multiple child care settings, as well as the temporary and lasting effects of the expulsions or "push-outs" on the entire family. One center director of a state-funded preschool and one head teacher of a private center also participated. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, focus groups, and on-line temperament profiles. Grounded theory was used to code the data in terms of the study's conceptual framework, including relationships between parent, child and teacher/provider, Critical Race Theory (CRT), neurobiological considerations, gaps in teacher/provider preparation, and the high-stakes accountability movement. The social construction of Black boys and learning in early child care settings was also explored. Expulsions or push-outs had several negative impacts for parents, the boys of this study and their families. However, through these hardships, parents learned strong advocacy skills and showed resiliency. Implications for providers and policy are discussed.

Graduating globally conscious citizens, prepared to lead in a global society and serve competently in their communities, is a mission for institutions of higher learning. Short-term study abroad programs with service-learning components have increased in favor toward exposing more students to international engagement, however, few studies explore socially responsible leadership development from these programs and fewer reveal participant perspectives. The purpose of the qualitative case study was to explore and interpret perceptions had by undergraduates and faculty leaders on socially responsible leadership development from participation in the short-term, faculty-led international service-learning component of a capstone course. Utilizing the Social Change Model of Leadership Development to guide the research and organize the findings allowed a thorough exploration of the constructs, identification of experiential learning and transformative learning, along with short-term international service-learning. Findings revealed engagement, reflection, and communication were integral to socially responsible leadership development as well as challenging bias and assumption, change in perspective, trust, skill contribution, global consciousness, and knowledge acquisition. A short-term, faculty-led international service-learning experience embedded within a capstone could develop socially responsible leadership in undergraduates thus influencing their global citizenship. Recommendations for practice include considering the maturity level and learning styles of participants to reduce disengagement and enhance learning and development for all students. Future research could document the longitudinal effect of short-term international service-learning on former participants’ socially responsible leadership.

In recent years, Europe has witnessed a flow of refugees from war struck areas who seek asylum in various European countries, where Sweden is one of the recipient country. A large portion of these refugees comprise of unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs). Aim: The aim of the present study is to examine how unaccompanied refugee minors have the conditions in Malmo when it comes to individual health and lifestyle (tobacco, alcohol and drug use) and social environment (absence of family, living situation, school, social support and future prospects) as compared to the general population of the same age; and also, if these conditions could possibly put them at a risk to encounter or commit a crime. Method: The data is collected using quantitative survey questionnaires distributed to URMs (N=30). The data of the general population has been obtained through Region Skåne. Results: The findings indicate that in comparison to the general population, URMs report high level of ill-health, tobacco use, access to narcotics and low social support, which are termed as risk factors. The institute of school, however, is termed a protective factor for the URMs, where they score almost equivalent to the general population in terms of school satisfaction and better than them in terms of help and support from the teachers. The implication of the findings are discussed further in the paper.

This Grounded Theory study explored the longer-term psychological effects of male perpetrated domestic violence from the perspectives of ten women survivors. On average, they had been away from abuse for eleven years. The findings indicate that in the longer-term, concerns for safety and fear-related responses continued to affect women's lives. Additionally, two distinct theories are depicted. 'Revisiting intimacy' relates to altered perspectives and approaches towards subsequent partnered intimate relationships. 'Re-establishing self-identity' reflects women's changed perceptions of self-identity, and how these issues were addressed over time. The processes described are not linear or sequential. Nevertheless, they suggest an on-going journey, with setbacks alongside breakthroughs, and some possibilities for resolving issues along the way. Being able to address self-blame associated with domestic violence was important. Furthermore, access to support, information and opportunities for selfdevelopment were relevant to improvements. Impediments to progress, such as unsuccessful help-seeking experiences are highlighted and implications for clinical psychology practice are discussed.

In this article intercultural education is discussed, cases from the Danish upper secondary school are analyzed, and some requirements for further development are proposed. First definitions of the concepts communication, communicative action, intercultural communication and intercultural education are given. Starting from these definitions it is argued that intercultural communication as well as intercultural education is possible. Then two cases are analyzed. Finally – in the Discussion – it is underlined that the students’ metareflection on the context dependence of the knowledge construction process is a pivotal precondition for successful intercultural education.

Annotation:
Further Education (FE) colleges have been able to offer ‘direct entry’ to 14 to 16-year-old pupils since 2013, following the recommendations of the Wolf Report (2011). Currently, there are 17 FE colleges in the England offering this type of Alternative Provision (AP). Research focused on pupil transition into APs does exist, though most of this focuses on Pupil Referral Units (PRUs) or school-selected FE provision. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted which showed a ‘gap’ in the research concerning 14 to 16 college provision in England. The aim of this research is to attempt to address this gap to a degree, and to gain an understanding of the experiences of young people who chose to make a ‘non-traditional’ transition into a 14 to 16 college. Classic grounded theory was selected as the methodology for this research (Glaser, 1978; Holton and Walsh, 2017). The aim of this research was to develop a substantive grounded theory of the experiences of participants ‘pushed out’ of mainstream who chose to transition to a 14 to 16 college. Qualitative data was collected initially through a focus group and five semi-structured interviews with purposively recruited target participants. The constant comparison method of grounded theory guided data collection and analysis. Theoretical sampling took place once a conceptual core category had emerged, resulting in data collection from four additional participants and re-interviewing an original participant. The main theoretical concepts emerging from the grounded theory methodology were: disempowerment and disengagement, agency through self-determination and re-empowerment. These theoretical concepts were linked within a theoretical framework drawing on transition models of self-determination theory (Ryan and Deci, 2000; Pierson et al, 2008) and bioecological systems (Trainor et al, 2008). The concepts of bounded agency (Evans, 2007) and ‘critical moments’ (Thomson et al, 2002) have been applied to explain how ‘pushed out’ participants were able to choose to make a ‘non-traditional’ transition to a 14 to 16 college. Implications for Educational Psychology practice have been discussed as well as areas for future research.

Scholars for decades have studied the achievement gap and attempted to explain it in regards to race and class. Throughout the existing literature regarding the achievement gap between black and white students, however, there is a dearth of research exploring why the gap exists for upper-class black students; this population is largely ignored. This research seeks to explain why an achievement gap exists between white and black students who come from households of similar incomes. Ten students (five white and five black gradates) of a private, non-parochial school in Washington DC are interviewed about high school and post-high school experiences. Using cultural capital and labeling theory frameworks, this study follows the work of Billings (2011), Pattillo-McCoy (2000), Lacy (2007), and Khan (2011) in their focus on black students, cultural capital, and embodied privilege, and builds on that of Lensmire (2012), Dixon-Roman 2014, Orr (2003) Adams (2010) and Tyson et al. (2005). Results uncover the uniquely complex configuration of class and race. Latent issues as a result of race can arise, and the research illustrates how they affect the achievement ideology and attainment of both black and white students. This study’s findings suggest that two mechanisms shape the achievement gap: academic support and social interactions and interpretations, with the former rooted largely in class differences and the latter rooted in racial differences. This study aims to improve our understanding of the distinct role race and class play in influencing educational and professional outcomes from upper-class backgrounds.

Movement of convoy/pushed convoy is its ability to change place due to certainforce that drives it. This force is created by ship’s propellers for given speed v=constand it should be equal to resistance of surrounding water and air. This is the reasonwhy useful force created by ships propellers (thrust) created by propellers of pushboatwhile navigating with a convoy at v=const needs to overcome not only theresistance of barges but push-boat’s resistance as well. For planers of transportprocess it is necessary to know, besides the resistance of surroundings duringnavigation of pushed convoys, the value of reduced and specific resistance for certaintypes of barges and convoys that they form. Apart from that methods for calculationof expected speeds of navigation, value of static load of engines based onexperimental research. Besides that new exploitation parameters for determination ofpush-boat’s work are proposed, which haven’t been used in Serbia. At the enddissertation presents methods to solve practical transportation tasks for differentships with different convoys.

This thesis describes the design of a special manipulator, driven by a special mechanism with a pushed chain. The chain is conducted from the bottom branch of a horizontal guide slot via a chain wheel to the upper branch of a guide slot. To the end of the chain there is connected a frame manipulator via a tap connection. In this work there are described and suggested the most important component units of a manipulator, including a drive.

Reaction-diffusion equations are commonly used to describe population propagation dynamics. In particular, they can be used to define two types of dynamics: pulled and pushed. The pulled dynamic results from a colonization led by individuals in small numbers located at the edge of the population, the pushed dynamic results from a colonization led by larger numbers from the core of the population. Biological mechanisms underlying the pushed waves are still poorly described, however, the presence of an Allee effect (characterized by a positive correlation between growth rate and population density for small populations) is known to lead to a pushed dynamic. Other mechanisms generating a dependence between population size and the probability of colonization are also likely to generate pushed waves, but this generalization remains to be confirmed. Few studies have addressed the effects of environmental factors such as carrying capacity on population expansion rates. However, while for a pulled dynamic, the colonization of the few individuals at the front of the wave should not be influenced by the value of the carrying capacity of the environment, in the pushed case, individuals evolving at larger numbers, the carrying capacity could be a limiting factor of the expansion. We have therefore attempted to describe (i) the effects of carrying capacity on population expansion dynamics, particularly through the prism of pulled/pushed dynamics, and (ii) the diversity of demographic mechanisms that can generate high dynamics. For this purpose we used individual-centred modelling approaches and microcosm experimentation on parasitoid hymenoptera, Trichograms. We used a species with a positive density-dependent dispersion resulting in an increase in the individual probability of migrating in large populations, thus leading to potentially high colonization dynamics. Using these two approaches, we first studied the impact of carrying capacity on expansion velocity, validating our hypotheses that the dependence of expansion velocity on carrying capacity could be an indicator of the pushed/puledl nature of expansions. In a second part we studied the phenomena of Range pinning described for populations subjected to Allee effects and we tried to generalize this phenomenon to pushed dynamics in the presence of positive dependent density dispersion. In a third part we studied how a heterogeneous distribution in space of different carrying capacities would influence the dynamics of particularly high expansions

In this dissertation, we focus on development of algorithms for estimating the severity of air leakage and for predicting the out-of-adjustment of pushrod in an air brake system of heavy commercial vehicles. The leakage of air from the brake system causes a reduction in the steady-state pressure in the brake chamber and an increase in the lag of the braking pressure response thereby increasing the stopping distance of the vehicle. Currently a presence of leak in the system is detected for the severities of leak that cause the reservoir pressure to drop below a threshold, such as, the leakage of compressed air due to rupture of the reservoir or of the hoses carrying the compressed air. The leakage of air is also possible due to several other reasons such as, cracks in the hoses, loose couplings between the hoses etc. The severities of leak, corresponding to such situations, do not lead to the reservoir pressure drop below the threshold; therefore, their presence remains undetected. For the detection and estimation of such severities of leak, a diagnostic scheme has been given and is based on a model developed for the mass ow rate of the leakage of air from the air brake system. Out-of-adjustment of the pushrod is the extension of pushrod beyond a prede- ned value and for safety concerns, an extension beyond this value is not desired. Currently no warning system is available for monitoring the out-of-adjustment of pushrod, except, during the safety inspection. Inspection of the pushrod for outof- adjustment is the most labor-intensive and time consuming task during a typical safety inspection procedure. For efficient and continuous monitoring of the pushrod for out-of-adjustment, a diagnostic algorithm for estimating the steady-state pushrod stroke has been developed. The scheme is expected to expedite the inspection process for the out-of-adjustment of pushrod. Experimental data from the air brake test setup at Texas A and M University has been used for corroborating both the models. Also, the problem of parameter estimation of sequential hybrid systems such as the air brake system, has been addressed. The \hybrid" nature of the air brake system stems from the system being in di erent modes corresponding to di erent values of the displacement of the pushrod and is a result of di erent spring compliances associated with the pushrod in di erent ranges of its displacement. The air brake system is \sequential" in the sense that as the pressure increases, the displacement of the pushrod increases and there is a distinct sequence of modes that the system will transition through and upon a reduction in pressure, the sequence of modes is revisited in the reverse order. The mode to mode transition of the air brake system is governed by the parameters, such as, the clearance between the brake pad and the brake drum. The problem of estimation, that has been addressed, is as follows: Suppose the pressure in the air brake system were to be measured and that the motion of the pushrod is not measured. Is it possible to estimate the nal displacement of the pushrod without knowing the parameters, such as the clearance, that govern the system to transition from one mode to another?

Postnatal care is an area for serious concern, with readmission of women and infants following discharge having increased significantly over the past decade. A reduction in average postnatal stays together with care delivered by many members of a fragmented multidisciplinary team disallowing full timely assessments of health needs, are reasons cited for this. There is a disjuncture between process, policy and health outcomes in maternity and neonatal outcomes. While there is evidence indicating what needs to be done to reduce mortality and morbidity and improve outcomes, more is required in relation to how this is done; central to this is innovation. Currently, the NHS does not have sufficient useful data on the extent to which frontline workers are delivering needed interventions, or their short and long-term impacts. Unscheduled maternity and neonatal admissions are supposedly a key indicator of the quality of maternity care. An understanding of why these incidents occur could generate significant cost reductions at a time of severe austerity and enhance the quality of care and safety for women and their infants.

Background: A power-assisted pushrim-activated wheelchair (PAPAW) is a manual wheelchair propelled assisted by motor power. It has not been documented about the muscle strength profile of upper limbs for PAPAW users. Purpose: To explore the relationship between the upper limb muscle strength and propulsion characteristics of PAPAW propulsion. Method: Twenty-two participants were recruited into this study who received manual muscle test of upper limbs and propulsion test on three kinds of ground surfaces: level, tile, and asphalt. The descriptive statistics on the upper extremity strength and wheelchair propulsion parameters were calculated and recorded. The mean and standard deviation were computed for each parameter and correlation analysis was performed on all of the strength and propulsion variables. Result: Propulsion torque during start-up phase for all three surfaces tested were higher than steady-state phase. Upper limb muscle groups variables were positively correlated significantly with propulsion torque (P<0.05). Conclusion: The study found that more propulsion torque is needed when initiating a PAPAW wheelchair. As the correlation analysis results indicated, in order to take advantage of the PAPAW, we could provide a reference for wheelchair propulsion training and principle of specificity in strength training for PAPAW propulsion.

The manual wheelchair (MWC) and power wheelchair (PWC) each present advantages and disadvantages to participation and occupational performance. Consequently, some individuals choose to use both devices, depending upon the activity. A pushrim-activated, power-assisted wheelchair (PPW) may provide an alternative to the PWC for these users. This study utilized a two-phase, mixed methods design, comparing the performance and satisfaction of wheelchair users carrying out self-selected activities with their current PWC and with a PPW. There was no statistically significant difference in outcome measures between the PWC and PPW; however, many participants reported a preference for the PWC. Less accessible environments, particularly when transporting a wheelchair, were identified as opportunities for PPW use. Rather than replacing the PWC for all of their identified activities, participants indicated the PPW improved upon the MWC. As a result, participants expressed a willingness to try more (and new) activities, including some previously performed with the PWC.

Internet and mobile devices have brought a new life to journalism, with the challenges and advantages that all of that implies. With them, there is also a new content distribution technique that emerged with the increasingly personal relation between user and mobile phone. The readers opened the door to the pushed news in their screens. In turn, the media took advantage of this trust and still give a special attention to this tool. But, at the same time, they also started a new battle for the presence in readers’ mobile phones, the search for a balance and the continuation of the values of journalism. In what point are we? This report, based on three months of internship on the online section of the digital newspaper “Observador”, aims to reflect about all these questions raised by pushed news and the attention given to them through a literature review, quantitative data and interviews with people directly involved in sending these alerts.
