Pushrod-type valve trains are still found in many engines. Since a vertical pushrod causes interference with the intake port, which reduces engine power, the pushrod is sometimes tilted to increase the available cross-sectional area of the intake port. In order to analyze this mechanism, a three-dimensional valve train model was developed. The model is then verified through experimention. Simulation and experimental results agree that valve train dynamic performance is not significantly affected by pushrod angles less than 20 degrees.

Rate-controlled sintering (RCS) of isostatically pressed particulate compacts of ZnO showed lower average grain sizes and intragranular pore densities than constant heating rate temperature controlled sintering. Valid comparisons of this form could only be made after corrections to hardware and software which reduced specimen creep under dilatometer pushrod load, nonuniform pushrod expansion, reproducible specimen temperature determination, thermal expansion during sintering, and instantaneous termination of sintering at the specified end of RCS. The improved microstructures from RCS were attributed to maximized efficiency of densification, optimizing the time and temperatures permitted for grain growth.

Annotation:
In heavy commercial road vehicles, the air brake system is a critical vehicle safety system whose performance degradation increases the risk of accidents and hence requires periodic inspection and maintenance. The wear of brake pad lining and brake drum during operation leads to increase in the stroke of a component called pushrod whose ‘out-of-adjustment’ creates severe brake performance degradation. The fact that the driver does not receive a corresponding tactile feedback till it is too severe adds to the complexity of manual detection. Motivated by the increase in onboard sensing, electronics, and computation capabilities, this study proposes an artificial neural network–based approach to predict pushrod stroke based on measurement of brake chamber pressure. Here, a back propagation algorithm was used to train the multilayer feed-forward network. The effect of excessive pushrod stroke on vehicle braking response was first studied using a Hardware-in-Loop system that consists of brake system hardware and a commercial vehicle dynamics simulation software (IPG TruckMaker®). Experimental data collected from this system with manual slack adjuster and automatic slack adjuster have then been used to train and test the artificial neural network for pushrod stroke prediction. The performance of the prediction scheme has been tested over the entire range of brake operating conditions. The prediction error corresponding to manual slack adjuster was found to be within ±15% in 322 out of the entire test set of 328 instances (98.17%) and automatic slack adjuster within ±8% in all 57 test sets (100%). Statistical analysis based on confidence interval revealed a prediction error between −1.62% and −3.05% for manual slack adjuster and 0.43% and −1.62% for automatic slack adjuster for 99% confidence interval, which demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed prediction scheme.

Density and thermal expansion of the nickel-based superalloy INCONEL 625 were measured in the temperature range 150 °C to 1400 °C using pushrod and piston dilatometry. Commercial pushrod-dilatometers were used for the measurements. The specimens are cooled and heated slowly at controlled rates in a furnace; the expansion is transferred by a long thin rod to displacement sensors. In the high temperature range an alumina tubular body with two alumina pistons of just sufficient clearance was used to contain the specimen in the mushy region and in the liquid state The investigated material was primary heat treated at 930 °C for 1 hour. As INCONEL 625 is an age-hardening alloy, the thermophysical properties including density at elevated temperature depend slightly on heat treatment conditions. Therefore, different measurement runs with a variation of the maximum temperature in the solid state (from room temperature to 1000 °C, 1100 °C and 1250 °C) were performed to cover different heat treatments (product grades) of INCONEL 625. Due to the lack of density and thermal expansion data of INCONEL 625 in the solid and liquid states in the literature, the measured density is compared to published density data of INCONEL 718 and INCONEL 738. A detailed uncertainty analysis of the measured data in the solid and liquid state of the alloy is provided.

Annotation:
Sustained manual wheelchair propulsion is related to shoulder injury, which is associated with increasing age and time as a wheelchair user. Consequently, the biomechanics of manual wheelchair propulsion have been widely examined, both to quantify the demand of a task and also to guide optimisation of technique. Such analysis has incorporated assessment of push rim kinetics using instrumented wheelchair wheels. The major limitation of the instrumented wheels currently available is that they add significant weight to the wheelchair, increasing the demand on the user and altering propulsion biomechanics. This thesis presents the design and potential clinical application of a novel lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel, the ‘Sensewheel’. In this thesis, the Sensewheel is used to investigate the influence of ageing on propulsion biomechanics and to quantify shoulder joint demand during various types of over ground propulsion. Propulsion demand is quantified with the use of surface electromyography and a musculoskeletal model of the trunk and upper limbs, animated with data collected from the Sensewheel. The Sensewheel is also used to identify pushing technique differences during over ground propulsion, and also to provide real time feedback as a training intervention to improve technique. This thesis consists of a series of short clinical studies exploring the use of the Sensewheel. The design and measurement capabilities of the Sensewheel are introduced, alongside discussion of current limitations and future development requirements. The first experimental study investigates age related differences in propulsion biomechanics and muscle activity levels during wheelchair propulsion on a treadmill. The results of the study are not conclusive in supporting the theory that older wheelchair users are at greater risk of injury due to greater relative muscle demand. The second experimental study examines shoulder joint demand during level, 2.5% cross slope, 6.5% and 12% incline over ground propulsion. The results demonstrate significantly greater levels of shoulder joint demand during incline propulsion, with glenohumeral (GH) joint contact force rising above 2000N and muscle activity levels rising to 92% of maximum during the 12% incline task. The results also demonstrate a strong positive correlation between force applied at the wheelchair push rim and resultant GH joint contact force. The third experimental study compares the propulsion technique of novices and experts during the same over ground propulsion tasks. The results demonstrate that the experts are able to use the force they apply to the push rim more effectively to reduce the repetition of the task, but that during more challenging tasks this may increase shoulder joint demand. A systematic review of the literature identifies that push rate and push arc can be successfully optimised using real time feedback. The fourth experimental study describes how the Sensewheel is used to provide real time data to inform real time verbal feedback to novice non wheelchair users, with the goal of optimising push arc. The intervention is successful in increasing push arc, reducing the number of pushes required whilst maintaining shoulder joint load within the range of normal daily activity. In summary, the thesis introduces the various potential clinical applications of a novel lightweight instrumented wheelchair wheel. In this thesis, the Sensewheel is used to assess the extent of the shoulder demand experienced during manual wheelchair propulsion, and to identify the importance of optimising pushing effectiveness. It is also used to successfully provide an intervention to improve propulsion technique.

My name is Greg Delany Walker. I’m an MFA candidate in Theatre Arts with a specialization in Acting at the University of Iowa. The following is my thesis that addresses my artistic process as an actor. My main focus in this thesis is to unpack my beliefs about what makes good acting and how I personally achieve that. I detail many schools of thought that pair well together to seek out vulnerability in actors. Vulnerability is my chief struggle as an actor given that I have a tendency to overthink things and rely more on intellect than on passionate expression in my daily life and in my work. That tendency leads me to be polite as an actor, which has gotten in the way of my being able to reach my full potential. I discovered time and time again how important it is to understand and embody acting techniques so deeply that I can let them go. All the different techniques of analysis, physical and voice work are essential, but they need to transition to being second nature. The techniques outlined in this thesis, learned in my life and through the program at the University of Iowa, have to be so ingrained that I don’t need to think of them in the moment on stage. The key to being present on stage seems so simple in a way, but it has been a great challenge for me to fully let go of control to allow for my potential public failure and humiliation. The times that I’ve embraced failure have been the strongest moments for me as an actor because of the power of risk. My hope is that by detailing my own process and experiences, with that idea of building technique and releasing into the present moment, that others could be further empowered to do the same in acting or in life.

Annotation:
Abstract The main task for most development-intensive organisations is to create, develop and commercialise new products and services. The technology push (TP) concept is considered an important competitive advantage for companies trying to create breakthrough products. Because development processes are risky and failure rates are high, especially in the case of technology pushed projects, defined success factors are valuable knowledge for the management of development-intensive firms. The prime objective of this study is to present a compact set of TP project success factors in an information and communication technology (ICT) context. Because the literature on new product development and innovation has presented many success factors for developed products, but has done so in a way that presents the factors as having a nebulous nature, the specification of TP success factors is also presented. The success factors are also empirically validated. The goal of the validation was to determine the relevance of the success factors introduced, and potentially define new ones. The validation was performed through an empirical study with semi-structured company interviews. As a result of this study we concluded that one success factor defined through the literature review should be removed due to a lack of relevance, that the other twelve success factors were validated, and three new success factors were identified during the empirical study. Eventually fifteen TP success factors are defined and presented. The practical relevance of this study is to help firm management to recognise the real actions needed to reduce product development risks. The theoretical relevance is in helping scholars to focus on key issues when studying the key factors of breakthrough development cases
Validointi toteutettiin puolistrukturoiduilla yrityshaastatteluilla. Työn tuloksena esitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen validoinnin avulla määritellyt 15 teknologiatyöntöisten projektien menestystekijää. Tutkimuksen käytännöllinen merkitys on auttaa yritysjohtoa tunnistamaan tärkeät toiminnot tuotekehitysriskien madaltamiseksi. Tutkimuksen teoreettinen merkitys on auttaa tutkijoita keskittymään avainasioihin ja tunnistamaan menestystekijät läpimurtotuotetutkimuksessa

Salas, Susan. „Pipeline dreams| Latina/o community college students pushed out of the transfer path“. Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3708287.

Latinas/os represent the largest ethnic group in California and are under-represented in higher education. Latina/o student college completion rates are the lowest of any racial or ethnic group, including Whites. This study used a critical race theoretical lens to explore the experiences of 14 Latina/o community college students who were pushed out of the transfer path. Storytelling served as the foundation of this study to understand and give voice to Latina/o students' transfer path experiences. Interview data from all participants were analyzed to extract codes and develop themes within the stories. Demographic surveys were evaluated to identify student characteristics.

Findings revealed that Latina/o students were pushed out of the transfer path at four critical points: Students were pushed out as they found themselves on academic or progress probation, resulting in conditional financial aid suspensions. Some students became discouraged as they figured out the amount of courses necessary to become transfer ready. Other students attempted to transition to transferable coursework, but they were unable to pass developmental math courses. Students also reported being pushed out as they learned about the immense amount of transfer requirements, program options, and costs, which created transfer information paralysis.

Latina/o students reported feeling emotional relief after being pushed out of the transfer pathway. Earning an associate's degree or certificate was an achievable goal and students felt a sense of academic accomplishment. Students also believed that an associate's degree was a "stepping stone" on their journey through the educational pipeline.

Students noted race, class, and gender stereotyped experiences that adversely affected their transfer path experiences. Negative perceptions about their race impacted their academic performance. Erratic and limited resources-including suspension from financial aid-proved harmful to their ability to remain on the transfer path. Gender role expectations obstructed Latina women and propelled Latino men on the transfer pathway.

The findings suggest that Latina/o students were disadvantaged by community college policies and procedures. Yet, they remained committed to their educational goals. Further investigation of Latina/o student community college experiences is necessary to develop policies, procedures, and practices that will serve to strengthen their educational pathways.

Annotation:

Preschool expulsions have gained new attention in the early child care field. The disproportionate rate of Blacks boys that are expelled or "pushed out" from their child care settings suggests particular concern for exploration. Behavioral problems in early childhood have negative outcomes later in life (Keane & Calkins, 2004); therefore, it is imperative that educational systems create equitable, non-disciplinary practices, which do not marginalize or shame Black boys. This study captured the experiences of five parents of Black boys that were expelled or pushed out of multiple child care settings, as well as the temporary and lasting effects of the expulsions or "push-outs" on the entire family. One center director of a state-funded preschool and one head teacher of a private center also participated. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews, focus groups, and on-line temperament profiles. Grounded theory was used to code the data in terms of the study's conceptual framework, including relationships between parent, child and teacher/provider, Critical Race Theory (CRT), neurobiological considerations, gaps in teacher/provider preparation, and the high-stakes accountability movement. The social construction of Black boys and learning in early child care settings was also explored. Expulsions or push-outs had several negative impacts for parents, the boys of this study and their families. However, through these hardships, parents learned strong advocacy skills and showed resiliency. Implications for providers and policy are discussed.

In this paper, we consider the problem of designing an algorithm for estimating the stroke of a pushrod of the air brake system. The stroke of pushrod directly relates to the braking force available at the wheels and also affects the response time. The longer the stroke, the volume available for expansion is larger and correspondingly, the response is slower. The stroke depends on the clearance between the brake pad and the drum, which can vary due to variety of factors such as thermal expansion of drum and mechanical wear. Typical safety inspections of air brakes include the measurement of the stroke of the pushrod of each brake chamber. Regulations on trucks such Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121 require the inspection to be carried out at 90 psi supply pressure and at full brake application. The evolution of the brake pressure depends on the stroke of the pushrod and the area of the treadle valve, which is controlled by the driver. The treadle valve meters compressed air from the supply reservoir to the brake chamber. The proposed scheme requires the measurement of pressure and a model for predicting the evolution of brake chamber pressure in response to full application of the brake (brake pedal is fully depressed). We experimentally corroborate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Dynamic simulations of the engine valvetrain and detailed studies on the operating mechanisms have long been a centre of attention. In heavy duty diesel engines, heavier valvetrain parts lead to higher inertia force. On the other hand, the opening and closing of valves is very fast and high overlap in Valves lifts and necessity for increase the exhaust and inlet valve opening time by dwelling, individuates cam design basis of these engines, which cause to increase in inertia forces. A common practice in valvetrain dynamic analysis is to use rigid multibody dynamics model. However, some assumptions are to be considered to simplify the model, especially in attachments and joints. In this paper, an under development heavy duty medium speed diesel engine valvetrain system has been studied. The valvetrain mechanism has been modeled using ADAMS commercial software. The flexible valvetrain parts have been considered by means of Component Mode Synthesis (CMS) method. Instead of using simple joint assumption of rigid multibody dynamics model, contact has been employed to study the exact interaction between each two parts. In this method the clearances in the system could easily considered. The dynamic behavior of valvetrain has been investigated and the forces for the parts have been obtained and compared with rigid multibody dynamics model.

The dynamics of valve train is influenced by stiffness, size and mass distribution of its components and initial valve clearance and so on. All the factors should be taken into consideration correctly by dynamic model and described qualitatively and quantitatively through mathematical variables. This paper proposes a new simplified method for valve train components, namely mode matching method (MMM) for camshaft, pushrod, rocker arm, valve and valve spring. In this method the amount of lumped masses for each flexible component is determined based on its natural frequencies and the considered frequency range. As a result, the dynamic model of each component is required to match its low order modes within the considered frequency range. The basis of this method is that the contributions of each component to valve train vibration are mainly in the low order modes. The numerical model of valve train is verified by an experiment conducted on a motor driven valve train system.

Aviation gasoline is in limited supply in many parts of the world although jet fuel is widely available. The turbine engine solution, however, is not a viable option for most of general aviation because of cost. Therefore considerable effort has been expended to develop suitable jet fuel burning compression ignition (CI) engines for general aviation. Because of weight and power concerns in aviation, much of the effort has been directed toward the development of geared engines. Many currently certified geared CI engines, however, require frequent gearbox inspections and have relatively low times before replacement or overhaul. The high pressures produced by CI engines generate torsional vibration that can be troublesome for geared engines. The first mode natural frequency of a drive train can be lowered by increasing its length thereby reducing stiffness so that its convergence with dominant engine excitation harmonics occurs at lower rpm below the high power operating range of the engine. This can be accomplished without increasing the length of the engine and with 2:1 gear reduction by using the camshaft in the case of a four-stroke pushrod engine as the power transmission shaft or a dedicated geared internal power transmission shaft at the desired ratio in the case of an engine with overhead camshafts. Simulation studies show that resonance at the lower speed is associated with a marked reduction in torsional vibration.

Loads prediction for helicopters is more complex than that for fixed wing aircraft given that the aerodynamic forces that produce the air vehicle’s lift and moments are generated by rotating components (e.g., the main and tail rotors). This paper examines rotor load content as a function of harmonics of the rotor angular speed. Accurate rotor loads prediction is driven by a clear understanding of the underlying physics of the problem. This understanding is important for several reasons. First, additive effects of multiple load components fed from the rotating frame to the fixed frame influence the vibratory response of the hub and fuselage. Second, structural fatigue life is driven by load magnitude as well as the number of applications of each load. The mechanics of load transference between the rotating and fixed frames will also be examined. Examples for 4-bladed and 7-bladed rotors will be presented. Definitions of cyclic/whirl (moment transference), collective (force transference), and reactionless/warp (zero force, zero moment transference) modes will be presented for a generic n-bladed rotor. US Army UH-60A Black Hawk flight test data will be examined. Blade lift, main rotor shaft bending, pushrod axial load, and fixed system servo loads will be derived and compared with measured UH-60A results. The intent of this paper is to provide clear insight into the nature of rotor load harmonic composition and load transference between the fixed and rotating frames for a rotor — two areas not well documented (and never visually described) in the literature.

This paper presents the results of experimental and numerical studies of hot distortion phenomenon in the phenolic urethane cold box systems. Dual Pushrod Dilatometer has been used to measure a thermal expansion/contraction of phenolic urethane cold box sand core specimens at temperature range from 25° C to 800° C. The high temperature tensile tests showed that the tensile strength of the phenolic urethane cold box silica sand cores is significantly affected by the bench life, temperature and binders level. High temperature hot distortion furnace tests on cylindrical cores showed that some aluminum coatings increase the temperature limit when distortion starts, but can’t prevent it. The hot distortion test aluminum castings showed that regardless of the application of coating, the type of coating, and anti-veining additives, all cores (silica sand) with density less than the density of the molten metal (aluminum alloy) were significantly distorted. Numerical simulations of the liquid metal flow around the cylindrical sand core and analysis of dynamic forces acting on the core during fill process showed that a buoyancy force is the major contributor to the hot distortion. It is concluded that the one of the solutions in preventing the hot distortion of sand cores is increasing their weigh, which will balance the buoyancy force and will bring the resultant force to the minimum. The hot distortion test castings using zircon sand cores (both coated and non-coated) with density almost equal to the density of the molten aluminum proved our predictions, and hot distortion has been prevented.

A business-as-usual approach by the IMF in Lebanon could have serious and far-reaching adverse impacts. Any potential policies pushed by the IMF in Lebanon must first be shown not to impact negatively on economic and gender inequalities, and must be drawn up transparently in consultation with local communities, civil society organizations and social movements.

This short pedagogical movie illustrates an effect in nuclear physics called backbending which was first observed in the study of the rotational behavior of rapidly rotating rare-earth nuclei in Stockholm, Sweden in 1971. The video contains a mechanical analog utilizing rare-earth magnets and rotating gyroscopes on a turntable along with some historic spectra and papers associated with this landmark discovery together with its explanation in terms of the Coriolis induced uncoupling and rotational alignment of a specific pair of particles occupying high-j intruder orbitals. Thus backbending represents a crossing in energy of the groundstate, or vacuum, rotational band by another band which has two unpaired high-j nucleons (two quasi-particles) with their individual angular momenta aligned with the rotation axis of the rapidly rotating nucleus. Backbending was a major surprise which pushed the field of nuclear structure physics forward but which is now sufficiently well understood that it can be used as a precision spectroscopic tool providing useful insight for example, into nuclear pairing correlations and changes in the latter due to blocking effects and quasi-particle seniority, nuclear deformation, the excited configurations of particular rotational structures and the placement of proton and neutron intruder orbitals at the Fermi surface.

Annotation:
The Amazon biome, despite its resilience, is being pushed by unsustainable economic drivers towards an ecological tipping point where restoration to its previous state may no longer possible. This is the result of self-reinforcing interactions between deforestation, climate change and fire. In this paper, we develop scenarios that represent movement towards an Amazon tipping point and strategies to avert one. We assess the economic, natural capital and ecosystem services impacts of these scenarios using the Integrated Economic-Environmental Modeling (IEEM) Platform linked with high resolution spatial land use land cover change and ecosystem services modeling (IEEMESM). This papers main contributions are developing: (i) a framework for evaluating strategies to avert an Amazon tipping point based on their relative costs, benefits and trade-offs, and; (ii) a first approximation of the economic, natural capital and ecosystem services impacts of movement towards an Amazon tipping point, and evidence to build the economic case for strategies to avert it. We find that a conservative estimate of the cumulative regional cost through 2050 of an Amazon tipping point would be US$256.6 billion in Gross Domestic Product. Policies that would contribute to averting a tipping point, including strongly reducing deforestation, investing in climate-adapted agriculture, and improving fire management, would generate approximately US$339.3 billion in additional wealth. From a public investment perspective, the returns to implementing strategies for averting a tipping point would be US$29.5 billion. Quantifying the costs, benefits and trade-offs of policies to avert a tipping point in a transparent and replicable manner can pave the way for evidence-based approaches to support policy action focusing on the design of regional strategies for the Amazon biome and catalyze global cooperation and financing to enable their implementation.

HEFNER, Robert. IHSAN ETHICS AND POLITICAL REVITALIZATION Appreciating Muqtedar Khan’s Islam and Good Governance. IIIT, Oktober 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.47816/01.001.20.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Ours is an age of pervasive political turbulence, and the scale of the challenge requires new thinking on politics as well as public ethics for our world. In Western countries, the specter of Islamophobia, alt-right populism, along with racialized violence has shaken public confidence in long-secure assumptions rooted in democracy, diversity, and citizenship. The tragic denouement of so many of the Arab uprisings together with the ascendance of apocalyptic extremists like Daesh and Boko Haram have caused an even greater sense of alarm in large parts of the Muslim-majority world. It is against this backdrop that M.A. Muqtedar Khan has written a book of breathtaking range and ethical beauty. The author explores the history and sociology of the Muslim world, both classic and contemporary. He does so, however, not merely to chronicle the phases of its development, but to explore just why the message of compassion, mercy, and ethical beauty so prominent in the Quran and Sunna of the Prophet came over time to be displaced by a narrow legalism that emphasized jurisprudence, punishment, and social control. In the modern era, Western Orientalists and Islamists alike have pushed the juridification and interpretive reification of Islamic ethical traditions even further. Each group has asserted that the essence of Islam lies in jurisprudence (fiqh), and both have tended to imagine this legal heritage on the model of Western positive law, according to which law is authorized, codified, and enforced by a leviathan state. “Reification of Shariah and equating of Islam and Shariah has a rather emaciating effect on Islam,” Khan rightly argues. It leads its proponents to overlook “the depth and heights of Islamic faith, mysticism, philosophy or even emotions such as divine love (Muhabba)” (13). As the sociologist of Islamic law, Sami Zubaida, has similarly observed, in all these developments one sees evidence, not of a traditionalist reassertion of Muslim values, but a “triumph of Western models” of religion and state (Zubaida 2003:135). To counteract these impoverishing trends, Khan presents a far-reaching analysis that “seeks to move away from the now failed vision of Islamic states without demanding radical secularization” (2). He does so by positioning himself squarely within the ethical and mystical legacy of the Qur’an and traditions of the Prophet. As the book’s title makes clear, the key to this effort of religious recovery is “the cosmology of Ihsan and the worldview of Al-Tasawwuf, the science of Islamic mysticism” (1-2). For Islamist activists whose models of Islam have more to do with contemporary identity politics than a deep reading of Islamic traditions, Khan’s foregrounding of Ihsan may seem unfamiliar or baffling. But one of the many achievements of this book is the skill with which it plumbs the depth of scripture, classical commentaries, and tasawwuf practices to recover and confirm the ethic that lies at their heart. “The Quran promises that God is with those who do beautiful things,” the author reminds us (Khan 2019:1). The concept of Ihsan appears 191 times in 175 verses in the Quran (110). The concept is given its richest elaboration, Khan explains, in the famous hadith of the Angel Gabriel. This tradition recounts that when Gabriel appeared before the Prophet he asked, “What is Ihsan?” Both Gabriel’s question and the Prophet’s response make clear that Ihsan is an ideal at the center of the Qur’an and Sunna of the Prophet, and that it enjoins “perfection, goodness, to better, to do beautiful things and to do righteous deeds” (3). It is this cosmological ethic that Khan argues must be restored and implemented “to develop a political philosophy … that emphasizes love over law” (2). In its expansive exploration of Islamic ethics and civilization, Khan’s Islam and Good Governance will remind some readers of the late Shahab Ahmed’s remarkable book, What is Islam? The Importance of Being Islamic (Ahmed 2016). Both are works of impressive range and spiritual depth. But whereas Ahmed stood in the humanities wing of Islamic studies, Khan is an intellectual polymath who moves easily across the Islamic sciences, social theory, and comparative politics. He brings the full weight of his effort to conclusion with policy recommendations for how “to combine Sufism with political theory” (6), and to do so in a way that recommends specific “Islamic principles that encourage good governance, and politics in pursuit of goodness” (8).
