Der volle Inhalt der QuelleCreativity is a multidimensional construct, not easy to define (Antonietti, Colombo & Pizzingrilli, 2011a, 2011b; Runco, 2008). It represents a psychological potential that each individual owns in different measures and a fundamental Life Skill for the well-being and the adaptation to the environment. Creativity and emotional competence - like the ability to understand, express and regulate emotions (Denham, 2006) - seem to be related to each other: especially fluidity (generating a great number of ideas) and flexibility (generating original ideas, different from each other) are linked to emotional competence and to self-esteem (Sanchez-Ruiz, Hernandez-Torrano, Pérez-González, Batey & Petrides, 2011; Hoffman & Russ, 2012) in children with typical development. Studies with children with atypical development highlight that children with autism spectrum disorder seem to show high creativity but they find some difficulties in using emotional competence. In particular, some specific traits of the autism disorder – like tendency toward perfection, focus on details and good memory (Happé & Vital, 2009) – seem to be particularly favorable for the development of creativity. However, research often focuses only on their deficit, not considering the potentialities that these children may have. With the aim to investigate the link between creativity and emotion comprehension in children with typical development and with autism spectrum disorder, two empirical studies have been carried out, assessing fluid intelligence, creativity and emotion comprehension. The first one involved about 400 children aged between 5 and 11, considering also the direct effect that some socio-demographic variables might have on the variation of creativity scores. Afterwards, attention was focused on a group of about 40 children with high-functioning autism and 40 children with typical development paired for gender and age. The first Study shows that, differently from fluid intelligence and emotion comprehension, creativity does not grow with age. Creativity and emotion comprehension show interesting correlations (fluidity and mental component: p<.05; flexibility and external component: p<.05; flexibility and mental component: p<.01; elaboration and mental/reflexive component: p<.05). An interesting interaction effect among the variables emerges, particularly in relation to fluidity and flexibility. The data suggest that the development of the two aspects is, in some way, related. The second study shows that children with autism produce elaborate and original ideas, but show a more rigid way of thinking (Fluidity: p<.05; Flexibility: p<.001) and significant difficulties in emotion comprehension. Among the three investigated aspects, interesting correlations emerged: emotion comprehension appears to be linked to fluidity (External component: p<.05, Mental component: p<.01, Reflexive component: p<.001), flexibility (External component: p<.05; Reflexive component: p<.05) and elaboration (Mental component: p<.01). In relation to these interesting findings, we propose an educational training for small groups of autistic children, focused on fluidity and flexibility, with the aim to increase emotion comprehension.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleMy dissertation consists of two researches concerning theory of mind, in particular pretend play and moral understanding, in typical and atypical development. The first study investigated the maternal mental language used during mother-child interaction in pretend and real contexts. The results suggest that mothers used an appropriated mental language during the mother-child interaction in pretend. The second study analyzed theory of mind and moral understanding in children with autism high-functioning and normal development children. The aim of this research was to explore evaluation of the intention of moral action and its link with mentalization ability. According to literature, results show significant differences between autistic and control groups in theory of mind tasks, but not in moral understanding tasks.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe thesis aims to investigate ToM in adults and the association between ToM and decision making (Astington, 1996; 1999, Sanfey et al., 2003). The classical economic approach on decision making (Von Neumann, Morgenstern, 1947) does not consider the subjectivity in the choice-process; psychology have increasingly stressed the need to describe how people actually make decisions. The first chapter provides a ToM definition (Camaioni, 2003) The second chapter discusses ToM in adults (Keys et al., 2003) and addresses the link between ToM and decision making, which requires the ability to manage different mentalistic (Marchetti, Castelli, 2006). The third chapter presents the “Mind reading belief Scale” (Real et al., 2003) which assesses beliefs about mentalistic abilities. The fourth chapter describes a research that investigating the link between ToM and two “decisional bias”, the outcome bias (Baron et al., 1998) and the hindsight bias (Fischhoff, 1975). The fifth chapter proposes a research that aims to study the role of ToM in the decision: the decision-making requires the ability to "meet the other’s mind" (Battistelli, 1995) in order to make a choice(2000, Fehr et al., 2007).

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleCurrently, the interest in the relationship between nature and human well-being has increased and many disciplines are investigating the influence nature has on human health, both physical and psychological. Exposure to a natural environment, for example, proved to be a useful practice in improving attention levels as well as in lowering stress levels. Horticultural therapy also uses plant care activities as a non-pharmacological therapy associated for the improvement of physical and mental health. The aim of this industrial doctorate is to study new ways of promoting psychological well-being through exposure to natural environments and the use of orthotherapy practices, considering the relationship between an individual’s exposure to the natural environment and his psychological health. In the first part of this dissertation is presented a systematic review of literature and is also shown an analysis of the specific context of the learning center where the research was carried out (psycho-educational context, type of users, needs of users and professionals, etc...) The design and construction of two outdoor spaces inside the center are illustrated, suitable to accommodate various types of orthotherapeutic activities, including sessions of psychotherapy and outdoor teaching. The second part of the paper illustrates three parallel projects with the common aim of promoting outdoor activities and exploring at a later stage the possible consequences on psychological health. First, using the space of the center was designed and built an external structure suitable for hosting psychotherapy sessions, primarily aimed at adolescent and adult patients. At the same time, an equipped garden has been designed and built for younger users, allowing them to teach outdoor skills, propose functional games in a natural context and make a didactic vegetable garden program. Finally, an evaluation in the form of an anonymous online questionnaire, which takes into account the benefits perceived by the therapist, relating to himself and the patient, has been proposed to various professionals engaged in psychological well-being, during an outdoor psychotherapy practice. This practice, called walk and talk, consists of performing an outdoor therapy session and literally "talking and walking together". The aim of the investigation is manifold: firstly, to promote the choice of an outdoor environment by professionals, provide professionals and clients with new forms of experimentation within the therapy path and finally collect the opinion of the therapists themselves on the perceived benefits, so as to evaluate any improvements to the protocol currently in use. The various projects initiated within the company will be kept active over the next two years at least and the data collected will be compared with those obtained from the sessions illustrated in this paper. The expected results related to psychological well-being are an increase in levels of well-being related both to the exposure of individuals and professionals to a natural environment and to the implementation of therapies in the outdoor context.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe present dissertation addresses some of the challenges that adolescents have to face to pursuit health in contemporary society. Specifically, this work focuses on: (a) adolescents alcohol consumption and (b) cyberbullying victimization. Adolescence is, in fact, an age characterized by a high risk for engaging harmful behaviours. Plus, the pervasive presence of the Internet environment in adolescents’ everyday life enhances the risk of being cyberbullied. The dissertation includes three studies that have been conducted on Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children (HBSC) 2014 data from Lombardy. HBSC protocol consents to study adolescence in three crucial phases (i.e., age 11, corresponding with puberty and the beginning of middle school; age 13 corresponding – in Italy – to the choice of the high school career; age 15, corresponding with high school years). The first chapter questions the interaction of gender, parental control, and family dinners in counteracting adolescents’ monthly alcohol consumption. The second chapter investigates the differences and the commonalities among general, visual, and written cyberbullying victimization. The third chapter analyzes the associated factors of girls’ cyberbullying victimization, with a specific focus on weight-related variables (e.g., actual weight in kilograms, perceived weight, body-mass index). The three studies reveal key-clues for prevention, emphasizing the crucial role of HBSC surveillance in monitoring the emerging patterns of risk and wellbeing for the new generations.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleDown syndrome (DS) is characterized by a marked inter-individual variability on both the global and the domain-specific levels. The present dissertation explores the variability in the syndrome from different angles. Understanding the timing of developmental milestones facilitates intervention planning and the early detection of risk for co-occurring conditions. The normative timing for typically-developing children to acquire cognitive and communication skills has been established, but little is known about what happens in DS. The aims of Study I were: to provide foundational information on when infants with DS acquire cognitive and communication skills; to facilitate the early identification of infants at risk of concomitant developmental delays. 74 infants with DS (4-18 months) completed the Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III (BSID-III). Parents provided information regarding their infant’s developmental and family history. The percentages of the infants acquiring each skill were calculated within 2-month age bands for selected items from the cognitive and communication scales. For those failing to acquire a given skill within each age band, the rates of prematurity, heart defects, corrective heart surgery and significant illness were calculated. This study generated information for developing a timetable for the cognitive and language development of infants with DS. As they grow up, individuals with DS are generally predisposed to a pattern of relative developmental strengths and challenges, but a great deal of within-syndrome heterogeneity is also apparent. This prompted Study II, which aimed: to explore the overall developmental profile of infants with DS; to examine whether any heterogeneity is detectable already during infancy; to identify any associations with various health-related and environmental factors that might influence early skills acquisition. 54 infants with DS (3-17 months) completed the BSID-III. Parents provided information on their developmental and family history. Scores obtained on the BSID-III scales were analyzed to ascertain the developmental profile of the sample and to identify any different profiles using a clustering approach. Associations with chronological age (CA), prematurity, medical problems, therapies and mothers’ education level were also explored. At group level, expressive communication emerged as a relative strength and gross motor skills as a weakness. Two different developmental profiles emerged, one more and one less advanced developmentally, with infants in the first group being younger. Heterogeneity in individuals with DS was further explored in Study III, shifting the focus to childhood and adolescence. The goals of this study were: to explore the cognitive profile of children and adolescents with DS; to examine whether their inter-individual variability could be classified in terms of subgroups with different cognitive profiles; to investigate the association between cognitive profile(s) and developmental milestones, medical conditions, and parents’ education levels. 72 children/adolescents with DS (7-16 years old) were assessed with the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – III. Age-equivalent scores were adopted, and Verbal and Non-Verbal indexes were obtained. These scores were first analyzed to explore the cognitive profile of the whole group, then used for a cluster analysis. Considering the whole sample, similar scores in the verbal and non-verbal domains emerged, while cluster analysis identified three different profiles, the “Non-Verbal”, “Verbal” and “Homogeneous”. The first subgroup had the lowest scores and the typical DS profile; the second had intermediate scores and fared better on verbal tasks; the third, with the highest scores, fared equally well in the two domains. CA did not differ in these subgroups. Environmental variables seemed to have had a role in shaping the Verbal and Homogeneous profiles.
