Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis describes work performed to establish and demonstrate a quantitative trace element microanalysis technique for geological material using protons accelerated by the Van de Graaff Accelerator at the National Accelerator Centre (NAC) in Faure near Cape Town. The method relies on the analysis of Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) spectra, interpreted with the help of the GeoPIXE software package. The use of the Si(Li) energy dispersive detector provides simultaneous multi-element detection at the parts-per-million (ppm) level, and a scanning beam facility permits trace element distributions to be studied at these levels. The calibration of the detector efficiency and the thicknesses of selectable X-ray attenuating filters was performed using pure elemental samples. This involved the accurate determination of the target to detector distance, the thickness of the active volume of the Si(Li) detector crystal, the thicknesses of all the absorbing layers between the sample and the detector crystal, and the assessment of the effects of incomplete charge collection in the detector.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleENGLISH ABSTRACT: We use Hanbury-Brown Twiss interferometry to determine Bose-Einstein correlations in the transverse and longitudinal directions. By using these two directions, we are able to determine the shape of the pion emitting source. The analysis is done with the UA1 (1985) data for pp collisions at Vs = 630 GeV. Two frames of reference, namely the laboratory frame and the Longitudinal Center-of-Mass System (LCMS) are used. A fit to a two-dimensional Gaussian parametrization yields good results. In the laboratory frame, an oblate form of the source is observed, with the value of the transverse radius (rt) larger than the longitudinal (rL) one. The LCMS analysis finds a prolate form of the source (rt < rL). A few reasons are discussed for the difference in the shape between the different reference frames. Our results are also compared with other hadron-hadron and e+ e: experiments.

Deur hierdie twee rigtings te gebruik, kan die vorm van die pion-bron bepaal word. Die UA1 (1985) datastel van die pp botsings by Vs = 630 GeV is gebruik om die analise uit te voer. Twee verwysingstelsels, naamlik die laboratorium stelsel en die Longitudinale Massamiddelpunt-stelsel is aangewend. 'n Passing met 'n twee-dimensionele Gaussiese parametrisering het goeie resultate opgelewer. In die laboratorium stelsel, is 'n ovaalvormige vorm vir die bron waargeneem, met die transversale radius (rt) groter as die longitudinale radius (rl)' Die Longitudinale Massamiddelpunt stelsel het 'n prolate vorm vir die bron voorspel, met rt < ri, 'n Paar redes vir die verskil in die vorm van die pion-bron vir die verskillende verwysingstelsels word bespreek. Ons resultate word ook met ander hadron-hadron en e+e- eksperimente vergelyk.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThis thesis is about the search for the W decay at a pp collider with =540 And 630 GeV. Since the mass is larger than the masses of the lightest hadrons (π, K, p,. . . ), we have searched for hadronic signature which allows to separate a W signal from the abundant production of QCD jets and at the same time to distinguish this channel from the W e and W , channels. We have shown that the presence of a large missing transverse energy (associated with neutrinos) and the limited multiplicity of the decay products are two decisice and sufficient characteristics of W events in this search. A selection based on these criteria has been performed on data corresponding to 734 nb-1 and yields 20(6) events compatible with the r± decay in π ± + nπ° (π π π + nπ° ). The background from W e is estimated to be 2 ± 1 events and the QCD jets contribute 2. 8 ± 0. 7 events. The comportment of our signal has been compared qualitatively and quantitatively with the production of W , in the standard model of weak and electromagnetic interactions. The most important result we have obtained is the test of universality of the lepton (e, , ) couplings to the W at Q2 = m2w, which can be expressed in terms of the ratio of the coupling constant gr and ge gr/ ge = 1. 06 ± 0,12 ± 0,05

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe Standard Model of electromagnetic and weak interactions predicts the existence of the intermediate vector bosons W+̲ and Z° and gives precise predictions for their masses. Antiproton accumulation by stochastic cooling and the operation of the CERN SPS accelerator in collider mode made accessible pp̄ collisions at 546 GeV center of mass energy. This thesis presents the observation of the intermediate vector bosons through their decays Z° → e⁺ e⁻, W → ev. During running periods 1982 and 1983, 8 decays Z° → e⁺ e⁻ and 32 decays W → ev with an electron of pT > 25 GeV/c were observed in UA2 experiment. Cross sections of W+̲ and Z° production and the weak interaction parameters: MW, MZ, sin²θW and p are determined. These results are in agreement with Standard Model predictions, thus confirming theory in a spectacular way. An upper limit to the total width of the Z° is given. An upper limit to the number of additional neutrinos is inferred. Radiative decays of the intermediate vector bosons are discussed

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe ordinary matter surrounding us is made of hadrons which in turn are composed of quarks and gluons. These latter are elementary constituents which cannot be observed in a free state. However it is at present recognized that this matter confined within hadrons can undergo, under extreme conditions of high temperature and/or highnet baryonic density, a transition to a state of deconfined quarks and gluons whichcalled quark gluon plasma. The conditions required to form this quark gluon plasma can be experimentallyachieved using a machine capable of colliding nuclei at very high energies: this is particularly the case at CERN where is located the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, which collided Pb ions at a center-of-mass energy of 2.76 to 5.02 TeV per nucleon pair and protons of 0.9 to 13 TeV. Pb-Pb collisionssuch relativistic energies definitely allow for the suitable density conditions to form the quark gluon plasma phase. This thesis work contributes to this physics program by studying the production of neutral light mesons in collisions of proton-proton at 13 TeV, which provides the necessary reference to understand further observations done in Pb-Pb collisions. This study has been performed in the dimuon decay channel by analyzing the dimuon invariant mass spectrum in the region of masses lower than 1.5 GeV/c2 , giving accessthe measurement of the cross sections of eta, rho/omega and phi mesons

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe urban area of Glanum (Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, 13) inhabited from the Bronze Age to the 3rd century A.D., according to the currently assumed chronology, constitutes a standard reference for ornamentation and architecture in Provence for the period known as “ pre-Romanesque”.Yet, some inconsistencies remain between its chronology (3rd- 2nd century B.C.) and its architectural ornamentation (with Italic reference). The monumental centre of the “pre-Romanesque” town has been ascribed to Greek populations in Marseilles by Henri Rolland, the principal digger of the archaeological site, whereas Anne Roth-Congès has proposed to give the town back to local native populations.We have chosen to study the central area of the currently cleared site in order to make out the ornamental influences of public architecture and to define who had lived in the town, who was at the origin of the creation of its monuments and which administrative status it had at the period.At the imperial time, the forum was built on an embankment permitting the development of a broad platform which allowed the preservation of monumental buildings and their associated architectural furniture. We had had the opportunity to carry out a small-scale excavation on this area. A close study of the stratigraphy and the ceramic furniture allowed from now on a new chronology which untangles the inconsistencies of former days.The examination of the architectural furniture shows a large Italic influence but with characteristics of its own, inspired by oriental décor. The study of preserved remains reveals the same phenomenon with an adaptation of classical plans to the topography of the town.Finally, the status of the town remains difficult to decipher but it must have been part of the Roman administration framework which was setting up in the course of the 1st century B.C

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleNeutral two- and three-pion productions in proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 2.465 GeV have been studied using the WASA detector and an internal pellet target at the CELSIUS storage ring in Uppsala. An important part of the detector for the measurments was a central electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1012 CsI crystals, which measured the photons originating from neutral pion decays. Test measurements and calibration procedures for this detector part were carried out. An important part of the analysis was the identification of the neutral pions from the invariant mass of the decay gammas and the use of Monte Carlo simulations to understand the detector responds.
Total cross sections for the pp→ppπ0π0 and pp→ppπ0π0π0 reactions are presented as well as distributions of relevant kinematical variables for the pp→ppπ0π0 reaction.
The distributions show significant deviations from phase space predictions. These deviations are typical for resonance production. The excitation of two simultaneous Δ resonances seems to be the main reaction mechanism.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe BCL6 proto-oncogene, located on 3q37 chromosome, encodes a nuclear transcriptional repressor, which plays a pivotal role in germinal center formation, regulation of B-cell function, differentiation and survival. The aim of this study was to clarify the role of BCL6 during the development of B-cells lymphomas. In this work, we demonstrated that (1) BCL6 expression in lymphomas is largely inependant of chromosome 3q27 rearrangements and is more related to the histological subtype, (2) lymphomas with t(3;14)5q27;q32) are characterized by a common cell of origin and the involvement of similar oncogenic mechanisms, (3) acquired somatic mutations of the first BCL6 intron do not correlate to the protein expression in follicular lymphomas, (4) the translocated BCL6 allele revealed significantly higher mutations when compared to the untranslocated allele, indicating that the two events, i. E somatic mutations and translocations may have linked origins

Current dosimeters used in radiotherapy for cancer treatment fail to distinguish between radiation received by the targeted tumor and the surrounding healthy tissue. The Integrating Feedback F-center Dosimeter is designed to be fault-tolerant, with the capability to distinguish the radiation dose received between a targeted tumor and surrounding tissue. To provide a proof of concept of the IF²D, five alkali halide salts will be irradiated by a tandem electrostatic proton accelerator. These salts, (NaCl, NaI, NaBr, NaF, CsF), were chosen for their f-center properties which enable a direct conversion between the wavelength of the irradiated salt i.e. color change, and the expected radiation dose. We expect that analytical calculations between wavelength and expected radiation dose will correlate with experimental data. A direct conversion will enable the doctor to determine how much radiation the salt has received and therefore how much radiation dose the tumor itself has received. As a result, the patient will require less exposure time, and less radiation treatments, thus reducing the probability of obtaining secondary cancers. The following paper outlines the initial procedures taken to irradiate the selected salts and theoretical calculations that we expect to parallel future experimental data.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleElectron transfer reactions are key events in the. Functioning of living cells, in particular in photosynthesis and respiration. To study the electron transfer processes in proteins, we used a multi- disciplinary approach on the photosynthetic reaction center (RC) from Rhodobacter sphaeroides. We have modified some environmemal factors (membrane, pH, binding of transition metal ions) with the aim of following the induced structural and functional changes. These modifications were studied in parai lei by photoinduced absorption change spectroscopy and by molecular modeling. This work leads to the following results: - Effect of the pH on the Position of QB. Ln the literature, the secondary quinone (QB) is described using X-ray crystallography to occupy mainly two positions. The equilibrium between these two positions has been proposed to depend on the redox state of QB. Using electrostatics-based calculations, we have shown that the conformational equilibrium of QB does not solely depend on the' redox state OfQB, but also on the pH value of the solution. - Effect of the Membrane Environment on the Electron Transfer Properties. Experimentally, RC were incorporated in dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) liposomes. We have shown that the DMPC lipid phase transition influences differently the first and second electron transfer. The second electron transfer being sensitive to the lipid phase transition whereas the first electron transfer is not. This observation confirms the different nature of the rate limiting steps involved in the two electron transfer processes. - Effect of Cadmium Binding. There is a debate in the literature to determine if the effect of transition metal ion on the RC is either local, on the first shell of residues that bind it, or rather more delocalized. Our study of the Ko value of Cd2+, combining experimental and theoretical methods, suggest that the Cd2+ interacts electrostatically with a large domain of the protein (delocalized interaction)
