The paper deals with the measurement of the resonance frequencies of wheat stems with special respect to different wheat varieties. For the measurement, the dynamical method of the transverse frequency was used. Formulas were derived for the calculation of the bending toughness of stems. The <I>t</I>-test was used for the evaluation of the strength coefficient in bending for the samples of stems of different wheat varieties. The results can be used for the evaluation of the wheat resistance to lodging.

The presented contribution deals with the quantification of moisture, combustible matter content, ash content and higher heating value of the selected types of biomass used for the heat production by direct combustion. The moisture, combustible matter, and ash contents were determined by gravimetric analysis in accordance with the established standards. The average moisture of the materials examined varied from 4.35 to 9.17%; the combustible matter content in the original samples ranged from 79.46 to 93.51%; the ash content ranged from 2.14 to 11.28%. Higher heating values of the examined types of biomass varied from 14,996 to 17,641 kJ/kg. The main contribution of the thesis is the acquisition of values usable in subsequent theoretical and practical efforts to increase the efficiency of the heat production by direct combustion of biomass. The results are useable in biomass boiler design and in identifying suitable conditions for combustion, including the service parameters of biomass boilers.

The paper is focused on studying regularities of holophrastic constructions’ functioning in the English literary prose by means of identifying and classifying the most significant features of their linguistic characteristics and expression. Holophrastic construction is regarded in the paper as a synthetically formed composite lexical unit that combines features of a word, a word-combination, or a sentence, and which figuratively but precisely represents in communication the integrative pictures of the individuals’ thinking or behavior, fixed in their memory as a corresponding concept, for decoding of which the recipients use their communicative and cognitive experience. Having analyzed the interpretations of holophrastic constructions’ characteristic features given in various scientific sources, the authors present a generalized classification of their linguistic properties as well as provide examples of their actualization in English literary texts. The carried out analysis allowed the authors to systematize English holophrastic constructions according to the following most significant features of their linguistic expression: communicative and pragmatic aim (inducing to actions, restraining form actions, and evaluation of the communicative situation), form of expressing meaning (transparent or opaque), degree of their emotional loading (emotionally neutral, emotionally coloured, and emotionally expressive constructions), their syntactic function in the sentence (subject, predicate, object, attribute, or adverbial modifier) and their structure (three-component, four-component, five-component, and poly-component, i.e. consisting of six or more components). The performed study advances the idea that the substantiated classification can serve as a methodological tool for structuring classes, subclasses and groups of the experimental material within the scope of similar linguistic research.

In order to model and optimise the structural parameters of the working parts of agricultural machines, including harvesting machines, the mechanical properties of the culture harvested must be known. The purpose of this article is to determine the mechanical properties of the blueberry plant’s stem; more precisely the tensile strength and consequent elastic modulus E. In order to achieve this goal, the measuring instrument Instron 5969L2610 was used and accompanying software BlueHill 3 was used for analysing the test results. The tested blueberry plant’s stems were collected from the blueberry plantation of the Farm Marjasoo. The diameters of the stems were measured, test units were prepared, tensile tests were performed, tensile strength was determined and the elastic modulus was obtained. Average value of the elastic modulus of the blueberry (Northblue) plant’s stem remained in the range of 1268.27–1297.73 MPa.

The effect of the chemical structure of polymethine dyes on their spectral-luminescent and photovoltaic properties has been studied. It has been shown that the introduction of hydroxyl functional groups into the dye structure leads to a bathochromic shift of the absorption and fluorescence bands. During the adsorption of dyes on the surface of titanium dioxide, a shift of their spectra to the red wavelength region was recorded with a simultaneous broadening of the bands caused by dye aggregation on the semiconductor surface. A decrease in the lifetimes of the excited state of molecules by 64 and 30% was registered for dyes 1 and 2, respectively. Quenching of the fluorescence lifetimes of adsorbed molecules is the result of electron transfer from the dye to the semiconductor. Measurements of the photovoltaic parameters of the studied dye-sensitized solar cells showed a higher efficiency for the functionalized dye, which is associated with better adsorption of this compound on TiO2

The permittivity of potato tissue was studied during uniaxial compression of cylindrical specimens prepared from two early varieties. Both the real and the imaginary permitivity components were determined repeatedly during the loading and unloading tests. The analysis of the results obtained shows that small differences exist between the permittivity of the late and early potato varieties. The differences are concentrated mainly at frequencies higher than 1 kHz with a maximum between 10 and 100 kHz. The effect of deformation is concentrated into frequencies between 1 and 100 kHz. The effect of deformation on the permittivity values can be divided into reversible and irreversible parts. The results obtained in the loading/unloading tests give some more information on the proportion of both parts.

Our objective was to determine which rhizome extract from Japanese knotweed, Giant knotweed or Bohemian knotweed has the most significant inhibition effect on the germinated seeds. The seeds of white mustard were incubated with the extracts for two days under laboratory conditions. We monitored differences in number of germinated seeds, length of radicles, hypocotyls and root/shoot ratio between the control and experimental seeds. Inhibitory effect of extracts from dried knotweed rhizomes was confirmed, but without differences among tested plants. A higher allelopathic effect was revealed in the case of extract from aboveground parts.

Thermodynamic properties of the Sb2Te3 compound were studied by measuring electromotive force (EMF) with a liquid electrolyte in the temperature range of 300-450 K. The partial molar functions of antimony in alloys and the corresponding standard integral thermodynamic functions of the Sb2Te3 compound were calculated for the first time based on the EMF measurements under standard conditions. A study was made of the interaction of thiourea with saturated and unsaturated organosilicon oxiranes in absolute methyl alcohol in a medium of potassium hydroxide, and methods were developed for the synthesis of unsaturated and unsaturated organosilicon silicides with a yield of 65–75%.The studies carried out revealed that the synthesized organosilicon episulfides are very reactive compounds and can react with nucleophilic and electrophilic reagents, while forming the corresponding silicon derivatives. The IR- spectra of the products were studied. It should be noted that, when comparing the IR- spectra of oxiranes and episulfides, it was revealed that the stretching vibrations of the CH2 group of the episulfide ring are underestimated by 50–70 cm-1 in comparison with the oxirane ring

Surface properties of whey protein gels are reviewed based on traditional microscopic techniques and new methods, as optical profilometer and contact angle measurements. Optical profilometer is an instrument allowing measurement of surface roughness and contact angle measurements to determine the surface wettability behavior (hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity) of the gels. Investigation of surface properties of whey protein gels is very important, as it can transform this product to a new level of application. It could be used as a matrix for an active ingredient release, material for tissue engineering, e.g. scaffolds, i.e. temporally structures biodegraded in the human organism.

The article studies the physical properties of rare earth metals, pays special attention to their unique properties, studies the main aspects of the application of rare earth metals in industry. Also, the structure and stability of various forms of sesquioxides of rare earth elements, in particular, europium, as well as the effect of the method of oxide preparation on its structure and properties are considered. The analysis of the ongoing phase transformations of rare earth metals is made. The article emphasizes the use of correct choices to achieve a large technical and economic effect when using rare earth metals in industry. The article is intended for teachers working in the field of physics and chemistry, as well as for students of the specialty "physics and chemistry".
